Easy Prep Homework For Kindergarten

Homework in Kindergarten: is it a good idea and how you should do it to make it valuable to your students and their families? Take a look at this monthly homework  for kindergarten printable and editable calendars .

Giving homework in kindergarten can be hard. You need parental involvement, and it can be difficult for some families to find time to complete it. One of my co-workers wanted a monthly calendar that students could do with their families. I created these editable monthly homework challenges so that families can complete the activities on their own time. They won’t need a lot of materials, and they can easily be done in a few minutes.

Homework for Kindergarten Printable Calendars

There are 16 challenges to complete every month. Some of them involve writing, some of the activities are hands-on. There is a mix of literacy, math and science challenges.  You only print and send home 1 page per month, no more worrying about photocopying a whole packet for each student.

They are editable!

I have made them editable so that you can change up the challenges to match up with what you are teaching that month. It is editable in PowerPoint, and all you have to do is type in the activity you want your students to complete.

Most asked questions:

Is this mandatory homework for your students? No. We don’t enforce homework for our students, if parents want something to work on at home, they can do these activities. I don’t believe in punishing kindergarten students for not doing their homework – that’s something out of their control.

What do you do when students bring back the completed homework calendar? We celebrate! We highlight their work to the rest of the class, I put a sticker on it and write an encouraging note and send it back home.

Do you have these available in Spanish also? I send my homework home in both English and Spanish.

I do not, but they are editable so you can change the activities to Spanish if you would like to use it!

I love this idea and I do want to try it in my classroom. I’m just curious on how you track it to see if they have been doing the things on the calendar. Honor system? Not much parent involvement in my school area. Just seeing how to get my parents and the student show me what they have done the work at home.

I don’t check to make sure all students do it. We do not have mandatory homework in kindergarten, so this is just for families that need ideas for home.

Do you frequently have homework struggles with your child or teen? Or, does your student procrastinate doing their work? Maybe they even fail to turn in assignments. If any of these scenarios resonate with you, a better homework schedule may help.

A regular homework schedule establishes predictable times when homework is to be completed. Once the homework schedule has been in place for a few weeks, you may even find your child will begin doing their homework without needing to be reminded—although you may still need to monitor their work progress.

If you're struggling with homework completion in your household, or if you're having daily battles about allotting the appropriate amount of time to homework, you're not alone. That's why educators recommend developing a homework schedule—with input from your kids.

Once you set a homework schedule, then there are no questions about when the work will be done. It also communicates clear expectations; having a homework schedule helps kids understand what is required of them. And following the schedule encourages them to develop a good work ethic.

Schedules also help prevent procrastination and instill good habits like completing work on time. Homework routines also improve study skills and encourage kids to plan ahead.

Other benefits include developing your child's work ethic and organizational abilities. By helping your child complete their work at regular intervals, you are modeling how to manage time and projects in the future. When you send them off to college , they will know how to pace their work so they can avoid all-nighters at the end of the semester.

How to Develop a Homework Schedule

To develop a homework schedule, start by talking with your kids. Get their input on how they would like to manage their time and incorporate their homework into their daily routine. A successful homework schedule allows kids to finish their work and also have some free time.

Give Kids an Option

If you ask kids when they want to do their homework, their first answer might be "Never" or "Later." But if you dig a little deeper, your child may tell you what matters to them as they plan their schedule. This information will help you avoid scheduling homework during their favorite television program or when they usually get online to play games with friends.

When you include your child in the decision-making process, you also will get more buy-in from them because they know that their concerns were heard. You don't have to give them their way, but at least considering what they have to say will let them feel included. After all, this homework schedule is about them completing their homework.

Allow for Free Time

Some kids can step through the front door and buckle down on their homework right away. When this happens, they reap the reward of getting their work done early and having the rest of the evening to do what they want. But most kids need to eat and decompress a bit before tackling their assignments.

As you develop your homework schedule, keep in mind your child has already spent at least six hours in class. And this time doesn't include getting to and from school or participation in extracurricular programs . Allow kids some free time before beginning their homework if that's what they need to unwind.

Establish a Timeline

Generally, you can expect about 10 minutes of homework per grade level of school. This means that a third-grade student will need about 30 minutes to complete homework. However, the amount of time needed can vary dramatically between students, teachers, and schools.

Find out how much time your child's teacher expects homework to take each evening. If your child takes a lot of time to complete their work or struggles with homework , talk with the teacher. Your child may need extra instruction on a task or tutoring assistance—or fewer homework assignments.

Pick a Homework Spot

Designate a comfortable and efficient spot for your kids to do their homework. This workspace should be well-lit, stocked with supplies , and quiet. The workspace should allow you to provide some supervision. 

If you have multiple kids trying to complete their homework at one time, you may want to find a separate location for each child. Sometimes kids can complete their homework together at the kitchen table, but other times having siblings around can be distracting. Do what works best for your family.

Put It All Together

Now that you know what your child's needs and concerns are for finding a time to do homework, you need to come up with the actual plan. Creating a homework routine is really just one piece of creating a daily school year routine .

For the homework time itself, get it down on paper so you can see exactly what they will be doing and when they will be doing it. Do this for each day of the week if you have different activities on different weekdays. Students who are assigned larger projects will need to review their homework plans regularly to make adjustments as needed.

Expect your child to work consistently throughout the assigned time. Avoid having multiple homework sessions, such as one before dinner and a second one after dinner. Starting and stopping may mean children may spend more time getting into what they are doing than working continuously.

Be Consistent

Once you have decided on a time to do homework, stick to the plan! It usually takes about three weeks for most children to really get into the habit of their new schedule.

If your child or teen has difficulty maintaining concentration for the length of time that their homework should take, then you may want to carefully consider breaking up the work to take advantage of the time when your child can focus.

This added step is especially important for children and teens with depression or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They may benefit from multiple smaller work sessions and more frequent breaks.

Even though the idea behind creating a homework schedule is to get your child to work consistently and independently, you may need to look over their work when they are done. This is especially important for younger children.

Make sure they understand their assignments and that they completed a reasonable amount of work during the homework session. If you find your child is having trouble actually working during their homework time, troubleshoot to find out what might be the issue. Sometimes kids need extra help and other times they simply need more motivation to get their work done.

If you find that your child continues to struggle with homework even with a schedule in place, you might need to dig a little deeper. Consider discussing your child's issues with their teacher or pediatrician.

Sometimes kids are reluctant to complete their homework because of undiagnosed learning disabilities. It could be that your child struggles with reading comprehension or has a processing disorder. Or it could be that your child is struggling with a mental health issue like anxiety .

Establishing a homework schedule allows children to build some important life skills that will help them as they navigate high school, college, and eventually the workforce. Practice is important when kids are learning new skills. So, having a nightly homework routine enhances your child's learning. Just be sure you aren't requiring homework time at the expense of being a kid. Having time to play is just as important to a child's development as learning new material.

How To Set Up Daily Folders for Kindergarten

I’m a big fan of teaching responsibility in kindergarten. One big example: you won’t find me stuffing folders – my students are capable of doing that themselves.

I think there are a few things you can do to make a daily folder setup successful and easy for kindergartners (and their parents) to use.

Here is how we had our folders set up and why.

Kindergarten daily folder

Our folders are taken home every day and brought back to school. I choose (affiliate)  “poly” plastic folders to last all year long. They are the two pocket kind with fasteners.

We get them out of backpacks in the morning as we filter into the classroom. They stay in our cubbies throughout the day.

We organize and put them in backpacks at the end of the day.

We do it everyday. It’s part of our routine.

Let me walk you through the folder. Our daily folder has 4 main parts.

Front pocket

Our kindergarten daily folder has a front pocket.

The purpose of the front pocket is to organize daily papers to take home. My kinders are responsible for putting their papers in.

Some examples of things that go in this section:

• School newsletters/flyers
• Lunch menus
• Completed work done in class

Pretty much all of the “stuff” that we get in the course of a day or comes from the office goes home in this pocket. Parents sort through and take it out (hopefully) daily or regularly.

How I made it

All I did to make this section was to add an “EMPTY” label onto the pocket and a one-line explanation.

I add a picture icon to the label so that non-readers (aka my brand new kinders) can successfully find and use it.

I printed a class set of the labels and simply stuck it on. I did cover the labels with clear packaging tape (wide enough to cover the label’s height) so that they would last all year long and stand up to grubby kinder hands.

Back pocket

The folder has a back pocket. We use this pocket to take unfinished work home.

There was a time that we had a weekly homework sheet. They kept it in there and didn’t take it out until Fridays.

When I ditched homework, we simply used the pocket to take home unfinished work (usually due to poor time management) that I expected to get finished.

Making this section was simple! I added a “WORK” label onto the pocket and a one-liner to make it easy for everyone to understand the purpose.

A picture icon made it early-reader-friendly.

Now, these 2 pockets weren’t enough organization on a regular basis for me.

I wanted to separate communicating behavior, special events and sending in money/forms/signed papers. So we used the middle fasteners (clasps or prongs) to hold an additional pocket and a monthly piece of paper.

Clear pocket divider

I added a (affiliate)  poly slash pocket to make communication between home and me – stand out.

That way notes to/from the teacher didn’t get lost.

You can also snag these (affiliate) plastic dividers with pockets inexpensively too.

As part of their daily routine , kinders check this pocket in the morning before putting their folder in their cubbies.

If they had “mail” for me they would take it out and place it in my teacher mailbox. I loved teaching this system!

It became their responsibility and I only had to check one location (my mailbox) of papers to get through. {Amen to working smart}

As you know how crazy going through papers daily can be – especially if there is a fundraiser, popcorn day or picture day… this totally simplifies it.

Everything gets put into one location.

Then during our morning routine, I can quickly sort through everything that has been put into my mailbox and then I easily know what (if anything) I’ll need to address or take care of later in the day.

I inserted a transparent slash pocket in the fasteners.

It’s see-through, which makes it easy on kinders, parents, and the teacher. Plus, the shape of the slash pocket means that kinders can slide full-size papers in and out on their own.

Aka: they can responsible to do it on their own.

I printed a “MAIL” label and stuck it on. The label has a picture and one line explanation.

Calendar insert

We kept a hole punched, double-sided piece of paper just behind the transparent parent communication mail sleeve .

This was hole punched so it could also go in the fasteners.

On the front side of the paper, we had a monthly calendar .

On the back, a reading log.

The monthly calendar allowed me to remind students and parents of important events and changes.

It was also where my students recorded their behavior color each day.

They simply colored on top of the date in the small square provided.

I printed a class set of the month’s calendars with a reading book log (to track at-home reading) on the back. I hole punched them and inserted them behind the mail sleeve.

As a side note – I did eventually teach students how to use the fasteners.

They learn how to trade out calendars when it’s a new month.

They count their leftover green days (and write that number on their new calendar) so they can continue working towards a reward coupon (which they got after 5 green days).

They turn these into my mailbox and I scanned them to keep a digital copy for documentation purposes.

They were rewarded for having read at least 10 books when they turned in their reading logs too.

It was my solution to  never having to stuff papers again and it just became part of our end-of-the-day routine in kindergarten .

The parents this year have even stated how much easier it is for them to know that lunch money, classroom books, and such are being responsibly handled by their little ones! Many of my parents left the letter explaining how the folder is used in the back pocket of the mail insert so that the babysitter or grandparent knows what to do if they are pinch-hitting for them. It’s Only Kindergarten. Do We *Really* Need Homework?

It was pretty darn adorable the first time my Kindergartner showed me her homework. She was happy to sit down like a big kid to complete the ten-minute assignment in her designated black-and-white composition book. And I was thrilled to see her excited about school.

Not so fast.

Since that blissful start, it has taken anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes of refocusing, nagging and pleading to complete homework assignments. If she just sat down and did the darn thing, it would be over in two seconds flat. But it takes time to find the right pencil, sharpen it to precisely the right length, steal an LOL doll from her sister, find a pair of socks that are “less itchy,” use the potty, set up her stuffies so they can do their own homework, beg to play Uno, go to the potty again, ask Alexa to play the “strong girl” song from Encanto , find a safe hiding spot for the stolen LOL doll, lose the pencil in the process and find a new pencil that is sharpened to precisely the right length.

By this point, I am slouched over the kitchen table with my head in my hands wondering how on earth I can get her to finish this one measly assignment without vomiting mom rage all over the place.

You see…I was a model student. I loved school. I loved homework. I loved making my parents and teachers proud. I loved getting As and stars and check-pluses. But I also remember receiving my first homework assignment–in third grade . Yep, my daughter is now getting homework literal years before our generation did.

Back in the early 1900s , homework prioritized memorization and facts . Toward the middle of the century, progressive educators began to value learning experiences, eliminating homework at the elementary level. The pendulum began to swing back to homework drills in the mid-1980s though, as schools started implementing high-stakes testing and Common Core standards.

Today, the general rule is 10 minutes of homework per grade level. So first graders would have 10 minutes of homework, second graders would have 20 minutes, and so on. But kindergarten is often left out of the discussion altogether, with some educators advocating for full-on reading drills and others maintaining it’s simply too early to demand that of children. So, do I need to force my daughter to do work that seems so hard for her (and for me)? 

“A lot of kids don't do parts of their homework because it feels hard for them and they don't know how to express that. They want to look smart in front of their parents, to show off a little and be the experts in something,” said Talia Kovacs , a literacy specialist, former classroom teacher and founder of the Resilient Reader program. Additionally, Kovacs maintains that many parents are stressed about their kids doing their best and kids are stressed about impressing their parents, “and this cycle loops and loops until just picking up your kid from school can leave you with a sense of dread for what's coming.” 

In other words, why am I torturing myself? And perhaps more to the point, is kindergarten homework even necessary?

Monica Burns , an educational technology and curriculum consultant, said instead of answering yes or no to that question, we should instead ask why homework might be assigned. Has the school run out of time to cover the curriculum? Do students need more time to practice a new skill? Are teachers trying to find out if students have mastered a concept?

Compounding the problem is the fact that the choice of whether to assign homework is rarely given to teachers. It is often a district-wide mandate. Because teachers are already overworked and stressed—especially these days—each and every night of homework might not have been thoughtfully assigned. Kovacs said that as a teacher, she would sometimes assign extremely purposeful homework…but if she was pressed for time, she might make a copy of whatever came next in her planning book. “The trouble with this,” Kovacs said, “is that parents aren’t always told which parts of the homework are super important for their kids’ growth and which are just to fill a need.” In short, homework at the younger elementary level is helpful in some cases but tedious in others. 

Her advice? If you’re not sure which assignments are the important ones…ask!

Burns urges teachers to be transparent with parents about the “why” behind homework assignments. And Kovacs said that it might be a good idea to chat with the teacher about which elements of homework are the most impactful so you can focus on those first. For instance, maybe your child really needs to spend more time on writing, but doesn’t need to do every damn math game that’s send home. That’s good intel.

There are a number of strategies for making homework time less onerous, as well. Burns suggested having a dedicated space for homework with pencils, paper and homework supplies within easy reach, or using an app like Brain.fm to play music to signal homework time and improve focus. Susan G. Groner, founder of The Parenting Mentor and author of Parenting with Sanity & Joy , advises parents not to hover while their kids are doing homework. “It’s ‘best practice’ to get your kids into the routine of doing their own work. Your presence communicates that the work has to be done ‘right,’ which isn’t the point of homework,” she said. “The bonus is that while your kids are working, it’s a little break for you.”

Groener and Kovacs even stress that homework at this age *gasp* doesn’t have to be perfect and *double gasp* doesn’t even have to be complete. Groener said that homework often “helps the teacher discern what they need to work on for each individual student, or for the whole class.” If the assignment turns into an endless slog, Kovacs recommends ending the homework session with something your child does well and then letting the teacher know that the rest of the assignment was too hard. 

The experts also reminded me that play has just as many educational opportunities—if not more—than homework. Sometimes just playing in the park may be more valuable than writing each sight word three times in a row. In other words, at this age, it’s probably OK to make your own decisions about which afterschool activities are best for your family, and simply communicate them to your teacher.

Bottom line: You know your kid best. As Kovacs maintains, “Learning to learn takes many forms. And to build resilience, your child needs to feel a sense of love, trust and optimism at home. If homework isn't helping you build that, it isn't helping your child.”

Subscriber only, crime and public safety | man, 25, pleads not guilty to killing mother, a longtime burbank kindergarten teacher.

Kyle Lombardo is charged with the May 7 killing of his 57-year-old mother, Karyn Lombardo, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Police officers and paramedics went to the residence in the 800 block of North Avon Street about 10 p.m. that night “regarding an unconscious female,” Burbank police said in a statement.

“When police officers and paramedics arrived, they found the unconscious woman inside the home,” police said. “Life-saving measures were taken by officers and paramedics, but the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Karyn Lombardo lived at the residence with her husband and son.

“Ms. Lombardo’s adult son was subsequently arrested … based on information obtained and evidence at the scene revealing he caused her death during an altercation in the family home,” police said. “There are no outstanding suspects or any danger to the community.”

The woman died from blunt force head trauma and a “basilar subarachnoid hemorrhage,” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s website.

The victim’s husband and the defendant’s father, Vince, told ABC7 last month about his son, “He’s mentally challenged … He didn’t want to kill her.”

Vince Lombardo — who was out of town at the time — described what happened as “some type of altercation” and that his wife’s head was “hit.”

Karyn Lombardo was a longtime Burbank Unified School District teacher, most recently at Bret Harte Elementary. Bouquets of flowers were left in tribute to her outside the school, beneath the windows of Lombardo’s kindergarten classroom.

“Over the course of her highly accomplished career, Ms. Lombardo touched the lives of thousands of students, parents, and colleagues, who will be mourning this loss in the days to come,” BUSD Superintendent John Paramo wrote in a message to district families shortly after her death. “Her dedication, warmth, and passion for teaching touched many students and colleagues’ lives. Her profound impact and loss on this community will be deeply felt throughout the city of Burbank.”

According to Paramo, Lombardo joined the district in 1990, teaching bilingual classes at Joaquin Miller Elementary School. She transferred to Bret Harte in 1993, teaching kindergarten and performing arts.

Counselors were made available to students at staff at the school following news of her death, the superintendent said.

In a statement announcing the murder case, District Attorney George Gascón said, “Ms. Lombardo, a beloved teacher in the Burbank community, had her life senselessly taken. I want to assure the victim’s family and the community that our office is fully committed to seeking justice and accountability in this tragedy.”

The victim’s son is due back in a Pasadena courtroom Aug. 13. A date is scheduled to be set then for a hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to allow the case against him to proceed to trial.

Kindergarten 'chefs' trigger practical education debate

NANJING — In the city of Xuzhou, located amid the verdant landscapes of East China's Jiangsu province, Xuhai Road Kindergarten produces an unconventional symphony featuring the rhythmic chopping of vegetables, the comforting sizzle of baking buns, and the gentle grind of the soybean milk milling process.

It's not the result of professional kitchen activities, but is instead generated by the culinary efforts of little chefs dressed in miniature chef uniforms.

Such scenes have recently taken the internet by storm, with short videos capturing the impressive kitchen skills of the preschoolers. The kindergarten's account on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, has seen its clips charm audiences, garnering hundreds of thousands of likes and turning the young cooks into viral sensations.

"These activities have become a staple of our daily routine, with children from various grades participating," said Zhang Qian, principal of the kindergarten.

The initiative began when the children collected the small, dark red berries from a hawthorn tree during an outdoor activity in autumn but were initially discouraged from tasting them due to sanitation concerns.

That sparked a question in Zhang: "Why shouldn't they savor the fruits of autumn on an autumn day?" She answered the question by opting to pivot the school's approach.

Inspired to bridge the gap between learning and living, the kindergarten promptly constructed a clay stove and introduced a lesson on how to make sugarcoated hawthorns. That unlocked a treasure trove of learning opportunities, provided by the likes of cooking, dyeing, gardening and feeding animals that have become much loved "subjects "in the kindergarten's curriculum.

"We are mindful of safety, but we fret more about the possibility of depriving children of a joyful childhood," Zhang said. "Nature is the ultimate classroom, and it's imperative for children to experience the seasonal changes and the inherent beauty of life."

Zhang Tian, the kindergarten's vice-principal, said, "Most of the time, we teachers are observers and guides, fostering an environment that encourages children to confront and resolve their own issues and conflicts."

Elated parents are witnessing a transformation in their children. "I can't believe my son can make dumplings," said one parent, while another revealed that "my daughter asked me to buy her an air fryer." Such remarks from parents highlight the newfound culinary skills and interests of their children. A further consequence of the initiative is children showing less passion for watching content on smartphones and a greater tendency to assist with household chores. Parents are proving supportive, with some even providing young chefs with firewood to fuel their cooking passion.

The novel form of practical education has transformed the personalities of some of the young students.

Once an introverted student at the kindergarten, a boy found his calling in cooking, with his exploits earning him the nickname "chef "among his peers. His teachers have observed a remarkable change in him, describing him as now being a radiant and confident boy who often hums contentedly while cooking.

Although this focus on practical learning has reduced traditional classroom time, the children have not suffered academically. Educational experts say that upon entering primary school, such children are very likely to impress teachers with their heightened concentration levels, problem-solving skills and strong learning capabilities.

Practical classes have been officially integrated and expanded in the compulsory education curriculum across China. From classification and storage to cooking, nutrition, agricultural production and traditional handicrafts, schools are embracing various forms of practical education.

At a primary school in Zhejiang province, students have developed a smart irrigation system in a 2,000-square-meter garden. In the city of Heshan, Guangdong province, forms of intangible cultural heritage such as traditional umbrella making and dragon boat racing have been incorporated into school curricula.

Xuhai Road Kindergarten exemplifies the integration of education with life and nature, transcending the traditional limitations of the campus.

"Education and teaching should not be confined to campuses, and knowledge extends beyond books," said Yin Fei, who is deputy head of Nanjing Normal University's home education research institute.

Xuhai Road Kindergarten has moved the classroom to the "kitchen", thereby combining education, life and nature. The initiative reflects the fact that education and teaching need not be limited to a classroom or even a campus, and knowledge is not only acquired from books, Yin said.

New research from the University at Buffalo School of Social Work suggests that assigning formal daily mindfulness homework may be beneficial for clients during treatment for alcohol use disorder.

Kyler S. Knapp, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Social Work, led the study, titled “Daily mindfulness homework completion is associated with reduced drinking during a mindfulness-enriched emotion regulation treatment for alcohol use disorder.” The paper appears in the June issue of Addictive Behaviors .

Knapp's co-authors were alumnus Braden K. Linn, PhD ’18, MSW ’12, assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University, as well as Paul R. Stasiewicz, professor and Janet B. Wattles Endowed Chair, and Clara M. Bradizza, professor, both from the UB School of Social Work.

Homework is widely used in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Theoretically, homework helps clients generalize skills acquired during treatment to their daily lives. However, clinical trials methodology has typically employed pre- and post-treatment assessments, which has made evaluating the contribution of homework to behavior change a challenge.

The current study leveraged daily diary data from a clinical trial of CBT for AUD to parse within- and between-person associations of mindfulness homework practice and alcohol consumption. Adults seeking treatment for AUD (N = 97) completed 12 treatment sessions and 84 consecutive daily smartphone surveys. Each day, participants reported on the frequency of prior day’s formal and informal mindfulness homework practice, the duration of prior day’s formal mindfulness practice, and prior day’s alcohol consumption. Multilevel models tested within- and between-person associations of mindfulness homework practice with the odds of drinking and heavy drinking, accounting for prior day’s alcohol use.

Results revealed that greater-than-usual frequency and duration of formal daily mindfulness homework practice, but not informal mindfulness practice, were associated with lower odds of a drinking day. Further, greater-than-usual duration of formal daily mindfulness homework practice, but not frequency of mindfulness practice (formal or informal), was associated with lower odds of a heavy drinking day. Results suggest that formal daily mindfulness homework practice may be beneficial and extend the literature by demonstrating that it coincides with reduced drinking and heavy drinking odds within-persons during AUD treatment. Apprising AUD clients of the potential value of homework may help boost its uptake.

This research contributes to one of the  Grand Challenges for Social Work tackling our nation's toughest social problems: Close the health gap.
