Youth icon: Why Kalam clicked among India's youngsters

The missile man touched the lives of millions of indian youth and inspired them to dream big. kalam's books, speeches, and interactive sessions with children across the country went a long way in propelling the youth to work hard to turn those dreams into a reality..

Four years ago on a winter morning in Guwahati, 14-year-old Anwesha Roy could not believe her ears when she came to know she was among the 10 students selected from her school to interact with former president APJ Abdul Kalam.

"He spoke to us as if he was a friend and not a great scientist or a former president. He said we should dream big and work hard," she said after the news about Kalam's death broke on Monday evening.

Kalam, who would have turned 84 in October, died after suffering a massive cardiac arrest while speaking with students at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. He was the head of state during 2002-07.

Like Roy, millions of Indian youth were inspired to dream big by the Missile Man. Kalam's books, speeches, and interactive sessions with children across the country went a long way in propelling the youth to work hard to turn those dreams into a reality.

In an interview with the online news portal Rediff published last year, Kalam had said one of modern India's greatest strengths was its youth.

"No other democratic nation has 600 million youth. The ignited mind of the youth is the most powerful resource -- on the earth, above the earth, under the earth -- and we have that," he said.

apj abdul kalam an inspiration to youth essay

N Bhaskara Rao, founder-chairperson of New Delhi's Centre for Media Studies (CMS), agrees with what Roy says about Kalam's efforts to reach out and make his thoughts easier for children to understand.

"Kalam never 'talked over' with the youth, he 'talked with' them," said Rao. "He went down to the level understandable by the person he was speaking to, whether school children or IIM students. That's why young people connected to him and loved him so much."

In a 2009 interview with The Indian Express, Kalam had said the youth has fewer biases about their society as compared to the grown-ups and hence it was much easier to motivate them.

"It is when children are 15, 16 or 17 that they decide whether they want to be a doctor, an engineer, a politician or go to Mars or the moon. That is the time they start having a dream and that's the time you can work on them," said Kalam.

Kalam used to regularly meet school and college students and talk to them about science, technology and life. He often shared with them his vision on where India should be by 2020. Anecdotes about Kalam replying to random letters written to him by children are plenty.

"The youth was attracted so much to Kalam because he was approachable. When a top scientist and former president allows you to ask him anything, you are bound to love him," said Anirban Chakraborty, a civil engineer pursuing research work at Japan's Kyoto University.

In the last 15 years, he had interacted with more than 18 million youngsters either face-to-face or over the internet.

Ayush Dinker, a Delhi-based filmmaker, vividly remembers the day when, years ago, Kalam came to deliver a graduation lecture at his engineering college in Jharkhand.

"It was a convocation ceremony and young graduates were more than glad to receive their certificates from Kalam, whom many considered a great role model. He was India's humble Missile Man and everyone loved his personality," said Dinker.

And wherever Kalam spoke, he drew a large crowd.

A journalist, who covered the Jaipur Literature Festival earlier this year, recounted how Kalam's session had drawn the largest crowd.

"Young people thronged the open auditorium. There was a stampede-like situation and additional police forces were called in. Celebrated authors could not attract the crowd he did, and that too in a literary meet. I wonder whether any other Indian president would have attracted such a gathering," said the journalist, who works with a leading daily in Delhi.

Essay on APJ Abdul Kalam Available at Vedantu

Imagine a world where dreams were not just wishes but stepping stones to greatness, where aspirations fueled not just personal growth but the progress of an entire nation. In the heart of such a dream-filled universe lived a man whose life story is nothing short of extraordinary - Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, affectionately known as the People's President and the Missile Man of India. Today, we embark on a journey through the pages of his life, exploring the roots of his greatness, the challenges he faced, and the impact he made on the world.

Early Years and Education

Let's go back to the time when a young boy was born on October 15, 1931, in the quiet town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. Known as Abdul Kalam or Avul to his friends, he came from a modest family where his father owned a boat, and his mother was a housewife. From them, he learned the values of hard work, honesty, and compassion.

As a child, Kalam was endlessly curious about the world. He spent hours exploring fields, watching birds, and pondering the mysteries of the universe. Little did he realize that these childhood adventures would shape his scientific mind and eventually contribute to India's journey into space.

In his autobiography, "Wings of Fire," Kalam fondly recalls his early years spent unraveling the mysteries of nature. It was during this time that his fascination with flight and the dream of soaring above the skies took root.

From the Fishing Boat to the Rocket

Despite facing financial challenges, Kalam's passion for education led him to pursue a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology. His journey into the realm of science and technology had begun.

Graduating in 1958, Kalam joined the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), marking the initiation of a career dedicated to the advancement of India's defense capabilities. His work on the development of indigenous guided missiles showcased not only his technical brilliance but also his commitment to national security.

Picture this: A young Kalam, with dreams as vast as the open skies, studying the principles of flight and aerodynamics. Little did he know that he was laying the groundwork for a future where India would soar to new heights, quite literally.

The Visionary Scientist:

Dr. Kalam's brilliance and dedication soon caught the attention of the scientific community, he found himself at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where his brilliance and dedication shone. His journey into the world of space exploration was marked by the successful launch of India's first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975.

In the 1980s, he played a pivotal role in India's space program, particularly the launch of the satellite launch vehicle (SLV) and the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

His leadership at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) contributed significantly to India's emergence as a formidable player in the global space arena. The successful launch of the satellite "Rohini" in 1980 marked a historic achievement, making India the eighth nation in the world to have its satellite in orbit.

Lessons from Failure

The Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) failed to deliver its payload into orbit. The disappointment echoed through the corridors of ISRO, but Kalam, instead of succumbing to despair, drew inspiration from the failure. He embraced it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve.

"Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough," Kalam would later say. This philosophy became a guiding principle not just for his scientific endeavors but for countless individuals seeking motivation in the face of adversity.

The Missile Man's Masterstroke:

While Kalam's contributions to space technology were substantial, it was his role as the chief architect of India's missile development program that earned him the title "Missile Man." The Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) aimed at creating a self-reliant India in missile technology.

Under his guidance, India successfully developed the Prithvi, Agni, Akash, and Trishul missiles, showcasing the country's technological prowess. The successful test-firing of the Agni missile in 1989 marked a watershed moment, solidifying India's position as a capable player in missile technology.

Presidency: A New Chapter Begins:

In 2002, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam took on a new role—one that would bring him closer to the hearts of millions. He was elected as the 11th President of India, and he approached this responsibility with the same humility and dedication that had defined his entire career.

His presidency was characterized by an unprecedented level of interaction with the youth. Kalam was a president who connected with students, inspiring them to dream big and work towards building a better India. He transformed the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President, into a space that welcomed students and teachers from across the country.

The People's President:

What set Kalam apart as a president was his ability to transcend the ceremonial aspects of the role and genuinely connect with the people. He was often seen engaging with students, addressing their concerns, and sharing his vision for a prosperous and developed India.

His simplicity and approachability made him a president of the people, breaking down the barriers that often exist between leaders and the citizens they serve. Whether he was interacting with school children or scientists, Kalam's infectious enthusiasm and optimism left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

Wings of Fire: A Literary Sojourn

In 1999, Dr. Kalam authored his autobiography, "Wings of Fire," which provided readers with an intimate look into his life and the various challenges he had overcome. Written in a simple yet captivating style, the book resonated with people from all walks of life.

In "Wings of Fire," Kalam not only shared the story of his personal journey but also imparted valuable life lessons. The book became a bestseller and inspired countless individuals, especially the youth, to dream big and strive for excellence.

Legacy and Honors:

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam left an indelible mark on India and the world. His legacy is not just in the scientific and technological advancements he contributed to but also in the hearts and minds of the people he touched.

Throughout his illustrious career, Kalam received numerous awards and honors, including the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. However, for Kalam, the true measure of success was in the positive impact one could have on others and on society.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's life is a beacon of hope, resilience, and dedication. From the small town of Rameswaram to the highest office in the land, he remained a humble and compassionate individual, always driven by a desire to serve his fellow citizens.

As we reflect on the remarkable journey of the "People's President" and the "Missile Man of India," it is impossible not to be inspired. Dr. Kalam's life teaches us that no dream is too big, no hurdle too high, and that the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of society are endeavors worth dedicating a lifetime to.

In the words of Dr. Kalam himself, "Dream, dream, dream. Dreams transform into thoughts, and thoughts result in action." May the spirit of APJ Abdul Kalam continue to ignite the flames of aspiration in the hearts of generations to come, guiding them to reach for the stars and contribute to the progress and prosperity of humanity.

A.P.J ABDUL KALAM: A VISIONARY FOR THE YOUTH, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE IGNITED MINDS.

Profile image of IJAR Indexing

In the words of the famous Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie, “I’m youth, I’m joy, I’m a little bird that has broken out of the egg”. When a little bird comes out of the egg, there stands a whole new and beautiful world in front of that tiny creature and this new world fills the heart of the bird with new aspirations and hopes to soar high in the sky. Similar is the case of the young people as during this period they have before them new vistas of knowledge and their hearts are filled with new aspirations to achieve big. Youth is often termed as the ‘spring of life’ as this is the time of freshness and flowering in life of a person. It is the time of fearless experimentation and dreaming of making impossibilities possible. The youth have the strength to work towards bigger cause. They are the future of a country and can play a great role in moulding the destiny of a nation. Late former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had tremendous faith in the power of youth in constructing the future of a country. He believed that young minds have superfluous possibilities and potentials that if equipped with knowledge and creativity can work wonders for a country. This paper throws light on Dr. Kalam’s views on the role of the youth in making India a developed country as stated in his book Ignited Minds.

In A P J Abdul Kalam India realized the personification of scientific tempers and vision in the position of President of India. Visions for a nascent nation, analysis of the past and examination of the present evils has been triangular policy discourse Kalam undertakes in his texts of practicality and clarity. Growth of the Indian nation on material plane and society on the ethical dimension and the citizen on spiritual fiber is the three pronged approach that challenges the policy makers as well as readers of his texts and discourse. A nation famed for its glory shall not rest on those lost laurels but launch onto new scalable heights for which a route map and vision document the first Scientist President of India prepares. The paper studies the vital parameters and pedagogy of that discourse of dreams, minds and materials in the run up to rejuvenation of the spirit of India.

For good governance and democratic leadership in Nigeria, universities must address the issue of examination malpractice. We need to assure that those who claim university degrees when they run for office or seek leadership positions have exercised integrity in pursuit of their degrees and that they have the knowledge base they claim to have. This presentation will report results of a research project in the Faculty of Education, University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria. Students were asked to answer anonymously, in writing, questions about their knowledge of and/or involvement in examination malpractice. Focus group discussions were held among faculty concerning their knowledge of examination malpractice and their observations. Reports of malpractice on which the university has taken action during the past two years were examined. The students’ writing was coded and analyzed for patterns and themes. These themes aligned with the themes of focus group discussions and official reports of malpractice. The research was conducted in agreement with Hendricks, Young-Jones and Foutch’s (2011) assertion: “If professors knew why students cheat and how to prevent the ‘need’ to be dishonest, students would benefit more from their classes….” Results do shed light on students’ perspectives, including their experience of high degrees of pressure. Key Words: Examination malpractice, cheating, academic integrity, qualitative research, governance, Nigeria.

Urbanisation often goes hand in hand with a rise in urban violence and crime that manifests in terms of street harassment of women and girls, stalking, sexual violence, blackmailing and extortion rackets. Children and women are seen as soft spots who can be victimized by predators. One such incident in the city is enough and the feeling of insecurity is spread like wild fire. It not only frightens girls and women, it controls every act they consider doing then onwards.

More than the technical and scientific knowledge, his books and lectures share the invaluable life lessons. Humanity, not science, was the primary focus of his teaching, emphasising on the importance of perseverance, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence in every endeavour.

Apart from visiting the universities and schools regularly, despite being busy with scientific pursuits, Dr. Kalam took up full-time academic roles as soon as he was relieved of his responsibilities as the scientific advisor to the Government of India.

In November 2001, Dr. Kalam joined Anna University, Chennai, as the Professor, Technology & Societal Transformation. Apart from teaching, he was involved in research work as well.

Following his stint as the President of India from 2002 to 2007, Dr. Kalam, once again dedicated his life to teaching. He joined as the visiting professor at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Shillong, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Indore.

Apart from these assignments, he took up the mission of igniting the young minds for national development by meeting high school students across the country.

As excellent as he was a scientist and a teacher, he was equally exceptional as a leader of men. Beyond his scientific brilliance and excellence in teaching, Dr. Kalam was revered as a very popular President, endearing himself to citizens from all walks of life across the nation.

His humility, affability and accessibility turned him into the darling of the masses and classes alike, his tenure as the President of India from 2002 to 2007 is seen as one of the most successful presidencies.

Even as a president, he remained committed to nurturing the country’s youth and encouraging their participation in shaping India’s future.

But, before he entered the highest office of India, he had served the nation in various capacities.

He was the Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development from July 1992 to December 1999. During this period he led to the weaponisation of strategic missile systems and the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in collaboration with Department of Atomic Energy, which made India a nuclear weapon State.

From November 1999 to November 2001, Dr. Kalam served as the Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Government of India, in the rank of Cabinet Minister. As PSA, he was responsible for evolving policies, strategies and missions for many development applications.

Dr. Kalam was also the Chairman, Ex-officio, of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet (SAC-C) and piloted India Millennium Mission 2020.

Dr. Kalam is one of the most distinguished scientists, thought leaders and statesmen of India. He had the unique honour of receiving honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions.

Medals and honours came to him like flies flocking to honey. He received the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna in 1997, but before that he received Padma Bhushan (1981) and Padma Vibhushan (1990). He was also a recipient of several other awards and fellowship from many professional institutions.

Despite his remarkable achievements and countless accolades, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam remained a modest and humble individual right till the end.

He was a model of integrity, simplicity and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who met him even briefly.

Dr. Kalam’s journey of excellence and service to humanity spanned more than six decades, during which he worked devotedly as a scientist, teacher and statesman.

The pinnacle of his career came when he was elected as the 11th President of India. His illustrious journey on this earth came to an end on July 27, 2015, while addressing students in Shillong.

Dr. Kalam breathed his last, succumbing to a cardiac arrest, but not before inspiring millions of young men and women to dream big and serve the nation.

Youth power can transform India: Kalam

Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam says the great challenge of transforming India can be achieved through youth which has got the power of ideas, ambition and ability.

"If you have an aim in life, realise that spent time cannot be recovered," said Kalam, asserting that no youth today needs to fear about the future. The former president was addressing the students at the 12th Wharton India Economic Forum (WIEF) held with the theme of 'India Imagine'.

The forum is designed to serve as a platform for thought-leaders, professionals and policy makers to define their perception of the global Indian and discuss the wave of new imagination that is spurring the nouveau Indian to create unprecedented opportunities.

"Hence the precious time has to be used for achieving the goal, have confidence to win, have confidence to defeat the problems and succeed and have a righteous heart; you will definitely succeed in all your missions," Kalam said.

"Success can only come to you by courageous devotion to the task lying in front of you. I can assert without fear of contradiction that the quality of the Indian mind is equal to the quality of any Teutonic, Nordic or Anglo-Saxon mind."

"What we lack is perhaps courage, what we lack is perhaps driving force, which takes one anywhere. We have, I think, developed an inferiority complex," the former president said, stressing "what is needed in India today is the destruction of that defeatist spirit."

"We need a spirit of victory, a spirit that will carry us to our rightful place under the sun, a spirit, which will recognise that we, as inheritors of a proud civilisation, are entitled to a rightful place on this planet."

He asked the students to ensure acquisition of three unique characteristics of life: "Realising the importance of the present that is today; the confidence that I can do it and building righteousness in the heart."

Posing the question of what the teachers can give to the students for their growth, Kalam said: "In an integrated way it can be said that an enlightened human being can be created by the teacher through providing two unique characteristics."

"One is building capacities among the students to inquire, to innovate, be creative, and develop the qualities of entrepreneurship and moral leadership," he said. "Second is the development of moral value system."

He had seen three dreams in India, which have taken shape as vision, mission and realisation, said Kalam, citing the space programme of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), the AGNI programme of DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) becoming a national mission.

"Of course these three programmes succeeded in the midst of many challenges and problems," he said, sharing his learning from these three programmes based on his personal experiences.

He summed these up as "high level thinking to transform the vision into missions, acquisition of knowledge from all sources, and working without boundary conditions till the realisation of the mission".

Above all the leader "absorbs the failure and takes the responsibility and gives the credit for success to his team while executing the mission," Kalam said.

Over the last two years WIEF has traced the Indian growth story exploring themes such as 'India's Mantra for Success' and 'Realising the Indian Dream'. Published By: AtMigration Published On: Mar 24, 2008 --- ENDS ---

Remembering A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: Leadership Lessons from a ‘People’s President’

July 29, 2015 • 6 min read.

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, India’s former president, passed away on July 27. He leaves behind an erudite legacy.

apj abdul kalam an inspiration to youth essay

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was a space scientist. He was a key driver of India’s space and missile programs. After he retired, Kalam tried to bridge the gap between rocket science and politics. A popular president (2002-2007), he accepted the proposal to run for a second term. He laid down one condition, however; the choice had to be unanimous. Some political parties didn’t agree. Politics (and politicians) did not win; the country lost. A popular president had to go after only one term.

In the U.S., the president has executive powers. In India, though every bill is sent to the president for his approval before its conversion into an act, he merely has a red-flag role. If parliament sends the same bill to him again, he has no recourse but to sign off on it.

Indians tend to see Kalam as a father figure, but not as one in authority. He was not just a father figure. An outsider in politics and free of political affiliations, he redefined and demystified Indian presidency. From India’s Missile Man, he became the People’s President.

“He pushed the country to reach new heights and to aspire to lead the way in its global rise, rather than aim to merely catch-up with the developed nations.” –Saikat Chaudhuri

In a 2008 interview with Knowledge at Wharton , Kalam explained his view of leadership. He emphasized that leaders should have a vision and not be afraid to go down unfamiliar paths. Most importantly, Kalam said, they should know how to manage failure (see video).

A teacher till the very end, on July 27, Kalam, 83, collapsed while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. Below, some Wharton professors and Indian business leaders explain what they admired about the late president:

“President Kalam was an inspiration to all of us,” says Jagmohan Raju , Wharton professor of marketing and vice dean of Wharton Executive Education. “A man of science, equally adept at designing ballistic missiles and coronary stents, nuclear devices and tablet computers, writing computer code or poetry. When it came to leadership, [he] relied more on faith, humility and integrity. We all fondly recall his visit to Wharton where he charmed one and all equally with his wit and wisdom. [He was] a teacher who cared about students and young Indians all his life up to the very end. All of us who teach at Wharton, and all over the world, salute you Dr. Kalam. You will continue to inspire us all.”

Saikat Chaudhuri ,Wharton adjunct professor of management and executive director of Wharton’s  Mack Institute for Innovation Management , says he is deeply saddened by Kalam’s death not only because he was a “fine human being with multiple talents,” but because “his departure is a huge loss” for India. “The country needs many more inspiring visionaries like him to realize [its] full potential on the world stage,” says Chaudhuri. “Dr. Kalam was a ‘People’s President,’ and ignited those he met with a passion not only to contribute to India’s growth, but to aim for world-class standards in their pursuits and be the best on a global platform. He was a true nationalist, who was motivated purely by a desire to contribute to a better India and world, upholding the utmost integrity. For India to reach her potential as an economic, political, and sociocultural superpower, we need many more leaders to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Kalam. He pushed the country to reach new heights and to aspire to lead the way in its global rise, rather than aim to merely catch up with the developed nations.”

“By showing that it was possible to think big and look far, he did what the best leaders always do: recalibrate what people think is possible.” –Manish Sabharwal

Jitendra V. Singh ,   dean and professor of business at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and emeritus professor of management at Wharton recalls: “I was privileged to meet President Abdul Kalam not once, but several times…. In the time I spent with him, I was struck most of all by his simplicity, and almost childlike curiosity. He was extremely alert, and a great conversationalist. As I sat near him through the ceremony [when Kalam was awarded an honorary doctorate at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore], I remember thinking to myself, “What a remarkable life story; what a remarkable Indian.” We have lost a remarkable Indian. While born a Muslim, he truly embraced the spirit of being Indian, quoting, as he would from time to time, from Hindu scriptures. He will be missed, but his ideas will live on, even as India takes its rightful place in the world. This is the India he dreamed about.”

Manish Sabharwal , co-founder and chairman of TeamLease Services, India’s leading staffing company, believes that Kalam did for Indian science and politics what the IT industry did for Indian business. “He raised aspirations by catalyzing a demonstration effect. By showing that it was possible to think big and look far, he did what the best leaders always do: recalibrate what people think is possible. He was also one of the first in public life to reaffirm that you don’t have to be Western to be modern, but that India must work hard to come up with our [own] definition of modernity, which must include science, technology, innovation and equality of opportunity for all.”

“ This was a President of India who commanded respect for the human being that he was, and not because of his title.” –Rajat Kumar

Allwin Agnel , founder of education network PaGaLGuY, says Kalam taught leadership to people the way it always should be done: humbly. “By humbly, leading. To touch lives by doing what is right, by never saying no to any good deed and by simply stepping up and being more. In a world of alpha leaders, he was the servant leader. A million people followed him because his words and actions always reflected his passion and willingness to help the world be a better place.”

Rajat Kumar , vice president of SnapDeal, says : “ My grandparents used to tell me stories about Dr. Rajendra Prasad (India’s first president) and Lal Bahadur Shastri (India’s second prime minister), and the faith they inspired. I was looking for that inspiration from our [current] leaders, but was not really sure whether I would ever find it — until Dr. Kalam became our president. He was a great scientist, an epitome of hard work, but most importantly, a human being who was untarnished by the trappings of power. My fondest memory of him is of a speech when he was addressing some children. When a child asked something, he sat on the steps to hear what the question was, and answered it sitting right there — on the steps of the stage with the child. This was a President of India who commanded respect for the human being that he was, and not because of his title.”

How Abdul Kalam Became A Role Model

He or she is always an extraordinary individual whose incredible life serves as the brilliant inspiration to many. Dr. APJ Kalam was surely one such grand human being whose achievements, humility, sincerity, hard work, positivity and never-give-up outlook had and would always impart a great moral fillip for all, at every stage of life.

  • Inspirational Quotes from A.P.J Abdul Kalam
  • Amazing Quotes from Abdul Kalam on Students

One of the most important characteristics of an ideal role model is never to give up hope and hard work in the face of oddities. Life is ready to throw challenges at different stages but a true winner is the one who does not get vulnerable to the unfavorable situation and keeps on finding ways to beat the challenge and fight right up to success. Dr. Kalam had been one such gallant fighter since his childhood and its bravery to face challenges with a smile right as a kid that has duly elevated to the cult status of a role model for all.

The much revered ISRO project direct and former head of India hailed from a poor family in Rameshwaram. His father was a boat owner of modest means and found it hard to run the family alone. Dr. Kalam had this dream to make it big one day since his childhood and despite his underprivileged situation. Thus, when he saw that it was getting hard for his father to make both ends meet, he took to selling newspapers, along with continuing his education. It was his utmost dedication to his studies; in spite the different oddities in his surroundings that earned him the scholarship to study his desired aerospace engineering from Madras Institute of Technology.

“ End is not the end, if fact END means "Effort Never Dies" - If you get No as an answer, remember NO means "Next Opportunity". So Let's be positive."

The poor boat-owner’s son, who used to sell newspapers to help out his dad  as a lad, went on to become a scientist at DRDO and later the honorary project director of ISRO, under whom India’s first ever SLV-III deployed the famous Rohini satellite back in 1980. In 2002, the great man was elected as the 11 th President of India and he has also been a revered recipient of all the highest civilian awards of the country. He was felicitated with Bharat Ratna, Padma Bibhushan and Padma Bhushan added to several other prestigious honors from esteemed bodies all across the country and the world.

Throughout his life, this great man has taught to keep on with the endeavors to fulfill the dreams the big goals in life. He always encouraged never to get bogged down by failures but to continue looking for the opportunities that will ultimately lead to the ray of light.

“ If you fail, never give up because FAIL means "First Attempt In Learning ".

Dr. Kalam became a role model not only through his fight and success against adversity but also with his humble way of living. He had always been pro-active in getting down from the podium and interacting directly with the people below, mostly kids and students. Always a believer of simplicity, he stayed unfazed by the luxuries around. Even during his stay at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, he used a small simple room and often had food with his bunch of staff, right on the floor.

The great man’s ever-active lifestyle and youthful spirit was another major reason that made him a role model for all. Even after crossing 80, he did not stop playing his veena or composing poems or professing speeches before students. In fact, moments before his fatal cardiac attack of July 27 th , the 84-year-old scientist was giving his lectures at IIM Shillong.

Death is unavoidable but it’s Dr. Kalam’s exemplary lessons and teachings that would keep him alive in billions of hearts forever.

How Dr. Abdul Kalam Inspired Students through his speeches

apj abdul kalam an inspiration to youth essay

The Missile Man of India and the former president of the world’s largest democracy, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, was one of the most successful and inspiring leaders of independent India. His words had the power to ignite the spark of hope even in those who had lost everything and not only this, his words are remembered across the globe by people of all backgrounds especially the youth. He gave hundreds of talks at various places in his lifetime which still stand out in all situations.

One of the best speeches of Mr. Kalam was the one he gave in the European Union in the year 2007. He emphasized on the runner, Kaniyan Poongunranar’s belief that he was a world citizen and every citizen was his own  kith and kin.  Mr. Kalam said that where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. Where there is beauty in the character, there is harmony in the home. When there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation. When there is order in the nations, there is peace in the world. These heart-touching lines touched the souls of all the EU members present there.

In one of his speeches at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 2010, he shared his experience with the 11 million young people he had come across in a decade’s time. He said that every youth wants to be unique and that is YOU. But the world around us is striving every day to make you a common person. Being like everyone else is not at all satisfying in the long run. People tend to regret that they couldn’t be unique and achieve greater heights in life. Dr Abdul Kalam envisioned before the batch of students the perspective of the ‘Evolution of the unique YOU’.

Dr Kalam always insisted the younger generation to work with their full heart towards anything that they wanted to achieve. He said that one might achieve success while having worked with half-heart but bitterness keeps breeding all the time. He is remembered by the younger generation as one of those leaders who gave them a safer and brighter India coupled with economic and social growth. He believed in the importance of a father, mother, and teacher in the nurturing of a corruption-free India as these are the people who develop the country’s future.

He taught the youth to not only handle success but also how to handle failures. He said that the management of the failure is very important as there will be problems and failures in whatever one does. According to him, learning leads to creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge and knowledge makes you successful. The ones who dare to dream the impossible are the ones who break the chains of all the human limitations. Although being from a science background, he also gave equal importance to all the courses of study and profession and he believed that one who can think and work beyond the imaginations are the ones who achieve the actual success in life. Mr. Kalam never failed to ignite hope and give motivation and strength to the young.

Here are some inspiring quotes by Dr. Kalam

  • You have to dream before your dreams can come true.
  • Excellence is a continuous process and not an accident.
  • Life is a difficult game. You can win it only by retaining your birthright to be a person.
  • Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success.
  • We will be remembered only if we give to our younger generation a prosperous and safe India, resulting out of economic prosperity coupled with civilizational heritage.
  • Those who cannot work with their hearts achieve but a hollow, half-hearted success that breeds bitterness all around.
  • Educationists should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurial and moral leadership among students and become their role model.
  • Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work.
  • If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.
  • My message, especially to young people is to have courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed. These are great qualities that they must work towards. This is my message to the young people.
