REVIEW: Varalaru Mukkiyam – A plot in the name of ‘Just for fun’ is loosely written and executed
A lighthearted, carefree film poses no problems, yet the writing demands some sense of accountability. Varalaru Mukkiyam appears to have assembled the standard guy pursuing a lady love story using some strange logic. The hero meets a girl by chance, falls in love with her, and then goes in search of her sister, whom he believes to be even prettier. The rest of the story is made up of the subsequent events, including the comical couple arguments, family disputes, trust concerns, and whether or not they finish up together.
The film’s biggest flaw is its long list of cliches, which starts with the way Malayali girls are portrayed and boys’ automatic attraction to them for obvious, cliched motives. The heroine’s appearance and actions, however, are handled in a way that places her in the “Good girl” category since the author does not want to place her in that situation. Each character’s introduction is so terrible that everyone treats women the same manner, using the conventional “figure” approach. The unfortunate aspect is that even the fathers of the hero and heroine are, in some way, in the same zone. Examples include situations in which the father of the hero speaks to his female coworker or meets his ex-girlfriend, as well as sequences in which the father of the heroine describes about the boys who wait outside his house or the rationale behind his decision to be friends with the neighbours.
It’s customary in Tamil cinema for the women to take second-fiddle roles, and this movie is no exception, but it becomes old watching them repeatedly perform roles that have no bearing on their personalities. The movie’s two heroines are created in such a way as to only support the hero’s choices and acts. It’s difficult to see how the hero differs from the other men when he arrives at the heroine’s home with the same goal in mind. A familiar changeover toward the end of the movie brought a sense of relief, but when it doesn’t, we think the cliché would have worked better.
On a more positive note, the comedy did succeed in parts. Jiiva is once again cool in his favourite part as the boy next door, which is more reminiscent of his earlier film “SMS.” In majority of the moments, VTV Ganesh as Adaikalam is the only character who makes people laugh with his delivery and one-liners, but he also has the most problematic character development in the film, and particularly his tablets joke throughout the film is not at all humorous. The lyrics and music fit the plot and are no way different from the writing’s intention.
I don’t see anything wrong with the hero acting like a playboy, but the reciprocation is frequently so poor that there isn’t much cause for concern about his behaviours throughout, which finally lead to the heroine forgiving and joining hands with the hero regardless of what. There should, in my opinion, be some sense and responsibility in the screenplay when you approach a movie just in a lighthearted and enjoyable way.

Varalaru Mukkiyam Movie Review: A stale, tasteless comedy
Rating: ( 1.5 / 5).
Jiiva is an actor with excellent comic timing. He has proved it time and again with films like Siva Manasula Sakthi, Nanban , and Endrendrum Punnagai . However, over the past few years, we have seen the films not doing justice to his potential. Sadly, his latest release, Varalaru Mukkiyam is no different. In fact, it is Jiiva's playfulness and charms that makes the film barely watchable.
Cast: Jiiva, Kashmira Pardeshi, VTV Ganesh, Saranya Ponvannan
Director: Santhosh Rajan
In Varalaru Mukkiyam, Jiiva is once again the quintessential middle-class youngster living a carefree life. His mother is played by... who else but Saranya Ponvannan. There's also KS Ravikumar as the dad, who constantly reprimands his son for being a wastrel. The core plot (if there's even one) revolves around a Malayali family, who move into Jiiva's neighbourhood. You know it's a Malayali family thanks to the never-ending barrage of stereotypes. The Malayali family's patriarch runs a bakery (thankfully, not a tea kadai), he wants only a Dubai marumakan , his daughters wear pattu paavadais all the time, and they wear a chandana kuri in every single scene... doesn't matter if they're in a temple, home, college, or railway station. In a fight scene, we even see the fighters wearing chandana kuri . Why? Because according to the makers, they are Malayalis and they are supposed to sport it all the time. Varalaru Mukkiyam is stuck in the time of Malabar Police , and it is not a compliment at all.
The writing in Varalaru Mukkiyam is as generic and dated as it can get. But Jiiva's character Karthik does have some interesting traits. He is self-centered and doesn't bat an eyelid before putting his dear ones in trouble. Jiiva has a lot of fun playing such roles. Remember, Siva from Siva Manasula Sakthi ? There are a lot of similarities between both these characters, but the difference is, the humour was organic in Rajesh's film. The writing was genuinely entertaining and there were strong supporting acts from actors like Santhanam, Anuya Bhagwat, and Urvashi. Unfortunately in Varalaru Mukkiyam , the onus is completely on Jiiva. VTV Ganesh as the typical hero-sidekick tries a lot, but he is no match to Santhanam. Here, he is a politician with an overpowering sexual urge. Every time there's an adult joke made, a moaning sound plays in the background. It includes even a scene where someone stresses the need for sex education. It's unfortunate to see filmmakers resorting to such cheap ideas to elicit laughter.
Varalaru Mukkiyam is essentially a rom-com stuffed with all the standard tropes of the genre. There are two female leads — Kashmira Pardeshi and Pragya Nagra — who play sisters, and the hero falls for the both of them, and chooses the "prettier" one. After relentless stalking, he somehow wins over the girl, but he gets into a fight when someone stalks and troubles his sister. When a friend points out the hypocrisy, Karthik, says, "Love pannanum da.. intha maathiri irritate panna koodadhu." Well, it is important to understand the difference between 'love' and 'irritation' and I so wish the filmmaker understood it too.
Varalaru Mukkiyam is a needless reminder of the times when senseless, absurd films were brandished as trendy comedies. A throwback to that era isn't that important a history to revisit.

Actor Jiiva’s Varalaru Mukkiyam had clearly indicated the film’s premise with the visual promos. It was so evident that it’s a cheeky comedy caper that has a plethora of tongue-on-cheek humour. A sincere projection that it’s not a family entertainer, but something that will appeal to the interests of audiences, when watched individually…
The story opens with the year 2050, where an aged uncle (VTV Ganesh) narrates his flashback to feeble version of Chris Gayle (Naan Kadavul Rajendran). He reveals about a happy-go-lucky guy (Jiiva), who hampered his dreams of becoming a successful politician with his ludicrous deeds.
First things First! If you’re looking up for an intense film with a serious story premise or a family entertainer that speaks about emotions, then ‘Varalaru Mukkiyam’ is not your cup of coffee. Yeah! The film endorses an out-and-out mindless entertainer that kicks out the logic from the first scene itself. Significantly, the entire film banks its hope on the cheeky humour that comprises adult themes. Say for instance, the sequence involving Shah Raa, Jiiva and VTV Ganesh and the twist in getting hitched with Annakili is a rib-tickling moment. On the other hand, KS Ravikumar encountering his first love at the home is yet another funny sequence. The last 30 minutes is filled with funny moments. VTV Ganesh is the pillar of this movie. If any other actor was cast, this role would have been incomplete. The two heroines Kashmira Pardeshi and Prayaga Nagra are completely here for the glamorous appeal, and they have done what is required out for their roles. Actors Siddique, Saranya Ponvannan and KS Ravikumar are perfect casting. Jiiva always shines in the movies of this genre, and he does his portions neatly.
Shaan Rahman’s BGM is okay, but the songs lack his signature. Cinematography is appreciable too.
If you’re looking out for any minus, the double entendre stuffs and adult comedy tracks might not be cherry-pick for family crowds.
However, the makers having clearly exhibited what the film is all about, might not disappoint the fans, who choose to watch this movie.
Verdict: A funny entertainer that will strike gold with teens

Karthik is a youngster doing YouTube videos and wants to be an influencer, popular all over. Adaikalam, his friend, is an aspiring politician. A Malayalam family with two young girls is his new neighbor. Karthik falls for the elder one, Yamuna, and goes behind her. Yamuna’s sister falls for Karthik. Adaikalam is the one who gives romantic ideas to Karthik. Whose love succeeded in the end? Whom will Karthik marry? Will the bride be Yamuna or her sister? The rest of the film deals with this.
Star Performance
Jiiva tried to play a romantic youngster. The senior artists did their job well.
The film didn’t have any unique story. It doesn’t look like a romantic film, but more or less like an adult comedy movie. There are a lot of logical loopholes in the film. The dialogues look madly written. When the hero’s sister faces an embarrassing situation, his dialogues are different and when the hero makes the heroine face the same situation, his dialogues are favourable for him. A politician with no work to do, except for suggesting love proposal ideas to the hero, is one of the loopholes. The camera works, production designs, and BGM are decent. Many scenes needed strong editing, as they couldn’t be watched with family.
What’s There?
- Nothing significant
What’s Not There?
- The script and screenplay are not interesting
- A lot of logical loopholes

A sleazy comedy that is sleazy but hardly funny.
At one point, VTV Ganesh sees the hero trying to get intimate with the heroine and comments, Enna ezhavu love da idhu. It is good to know that the movie is self-aware. Wish it was also aware of how unfunny it is! (more)
