Each year, SURP students will conduct research in the laboratories of CMMG faculty members and attend weekly SURP/SURE research seminars. In early August, SURP students present the results from their summer projects to mentors, peers and other Wayne State University research faculty at a Minisymposium. The program lists from recent Minisymposia are found at each link below.

Wayne State University

School of medicine, physiology physiology, summer undergraduate research fellowship (surf).

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program is hosted by the Department of Physiology at Wayne State University.

The SURF Program provides outstanding undergraduate students to learn more about:

  • research in physiology,
  • introduction to graduate programs, and
  • a stipend for 10-12 weeks of full time laboratory research training.

SURF Program participants will also present their research to fellow participants, current students and trainees, and Faculty.

The program is open to undergraduates with a 3.0 or Better GPA and an interest in Physiology.  Awards will be made on the basis of academic achievement, experience, commitment to basic research, and availability of mentors.  Unfortunately, we are unable to accept international scholars at this time.

The application deadline for the upcoming summer is March 1st .

Wayne State professor named president of the International Association for Great Lakes Research board of directors

DETROIT — The International Association for Great Lakes Research today announced its new board of directors and has named Donna Kashian, Ph.D., professor of biological sciences and director of environmental science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State University, as president. Kashian previously served as vice president of the board.

Founded in 1967, the International Association for Great Lakes Research is a scientific organization made up of researchers studying the Laurentian Great Lakes, other large lakes of the world and their watersheds, as well as those with an interest in such research. The association’s important work brings together researchers across disciplines, knowledge systems and domains of expertise to collaborate. The organization is a trusted source of science-based knowledge about the Great Lakes and other large lake ecosystems.

Kashian is a researcher with expertise in aquatic ecology, ecotoxicology and invasion ecology. Her research focuses on aquatic organisms to understand the impacts of environmental contaminants and examines challenges related to environmental justice, particularly in urban contexts where underserved groups may be more exposed to environmental pollutants. She has developed methods to improve water quality monitoring, and her findings have been integrated into community programs to raise awareness about environmental health threats.

Kashian also leads Wayne State’s Research Experience and Training Coordination Core in the Center for Leadership in Environmental Awareness and Research – or CLEAR – a center funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health ( P42ES030991 ).

“Dr. Donna Kashian is an excellent choice to lead the board of directors of the International Association for Great Lakes Research,” said Ezemenari M. Obasi, Ph.D., vice president for research at Wayne State University. “Her commitment to their core values and vision — particularly that of inspiring curiosity, awe and respect for our lake ecosystems and the people who have an interest in their well-being and impact on lives — makes Dr. Kashian an excellent leader for the association. I look forward to the great work that she and the rest of their board of directors will do.”

New England College Enters STEM Research Collaboration as Part of $8 Million National Science Foundation Grant

Dr. James Newcomb, Professor of Biology and Health Science and Co-Director of the Center for Undergraduate Science Research at New England College, works alongside a student in the College’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

The College will partner with 16 other institutions of higher education to strengthen STEM research in New Hampshire and use subaward to fund student research.

Higher education STEM teams from New Hampshire, Maine and South Dakota have been awarded $8 million each from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Collaborations for Optimizing Research Ecosystems Research Infrastructure Improvement Program (E-CORE RII). This funding will advance each State’s research and development competitiveness and promote scientific progress nationwide.

In the Granite State, this grant will fund New Hampshire Long-term Investment to Fuel Transformative research (NH-LIFT). This four-year cooperative agreement establishes the collaboration among New England College, lead institution UNH and other institutions around the State. NH-LIFT will empower students to do research that aligns with their interests, allow academic and industry researchers to broaden their pursuits through external funding and accessible research infrastructure, and enable the State to develop and retain a skilled workforce.

“This NSF-funded NH-LIFT grant will significantly contribute to developing research infrastructure in New Hampshire,” stated Dr. James Newcomb, Professor of Biology and Health Science and Co-Director of the Center for Undergraduate Science Research at New England College and Co-Principal Investigator on NH-LIFT. “New England College looks forward to working with other participating institutions around the State and providing increased opportunities for our students to engage in transformative scientific research.”

New England College’s faculty and student researchers will partner with Antioch University New England, Colby-Sawyer College, Community College System of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Franklin Pierce University, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, Rivier University, and Saint Anselm College over the next four years. As a subaward recipient, New England College will receive $40,000 each year of the grant. Most of these funds will support the College’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) and allow the College to hire more student researchers and fund non-biomedical research.

SURP students work alongside NEC’s faculty, gain experience that makes that more competitive if they apply for other research opportunities and can combine their SURP experiences with their required research theses. SURP students have gone on to become lab technicians, chiropractors, doctors of physical therapy, medical doctors, veterinarians, nurses and PhDs.

“At New England College, we have a saying: ‘Live what you learn.’ This simple phrase sums up our approach to higher education, which is to provide our students with opportunities to put their learning into action. This NSF grant does just that,” explained Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance Jr., President of New England College. “NEC is extremely fortunate to have Dr. Newcomb leading our research program and guiding our student researchers. I look forward to seeing all they accomplish over the next four years of NH-LIFT.”

Explore all metrics

Features of the macrostructure and microstructure of uranium dioxide powders are considered. Assumptions are made on the mechanisms of the behavior of powders of various natures during pelletizing. Experimental data that reflect the effect of these powders on the quality of fuel pellets, which is evaluated by modern procedures, are presented. To investigate the structure of the powders, modern methods of electron microscopy, helium pycnometry, etc., are used. The presented results indicate the disadvantages of wet methods for obtaining the starting UO 2 powders by the ammonium diuranate (ADU) flow sheet because strong agglomerates and conglomerates, which complicate the process of pelletizing, are formed. The main directions of investigation that can lead to understanding the regularities of formation of the structure of starting UO 2 powders, which will allow one to control the process of their fabrication and stabilize the properties of powders and pellets, are emphasized.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
