What’s included in Hawaiian Airlines Main Cabin Basic fare?

If you want to get to Honolulu from Los Angeles, Long Beach or San Jose and you’re looking to save money, good news: Hawaiian Airlines has just rolled out a low-priced option that puts a tropical vacation in easier reach for a lot of travelers.

The Hawaiian Airlines Main Cabin Basic fare will be available on select departures from the three California cities listed above for travel beginning Oct. 21. The move puts Hawaiian Airlines in sync with a major carriers who have been rolling out these lower-priced "basic economy"-style options, including United, American and Delta.

These lower fares vary slightly by airline, but the one thing they have in common is that they all exclude free advanced seat selection. Passengers traveling on Hawaiian Airlines Main Cabin Basic fares can select their seats at check-in or receive their assignment at the gate. That’s unfortunate, because sometimes by the time you’re checking in, there are nothing but middle seats left.

There are other downsides, too. For example, if you decide later that you want to upgrade to an "extra comfort" seat or to first class, you can’t. Nor can you change your flight or earn Hawaiian miles.

In return for accepting all these disadvantages, you get a reduced fare. And the reduction is significant. For example, we found a round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu in November for $418 in Hawaiian’s Main Cabin. That same flight in Main Cabin Basic costs just $358. That’s $60 less per ticket, or 14% off the regular economy fare.

If you collect Hawaiian Miles, this discount probably isn’t as valuable to you.

Consider that you’d normally earn about 5,000 Hawaiian miles on a round-trip flight between Los Angeles and Honolulu. HawaiianMiles are valued at around 1.2 cents each. So those $60 in fare savings are costing you about $60 worth of miles.

Don’t expect to find Main Cabin Basic deals at peak times. A recent search for travel during Christmas week showed no Main Cabin Basic option for Los Angeles to Honolulu. Main Cabin fares start around $618 round-trip at that time.

The Art Of Choosing Seats On Flights To Hawaii

Choosing the best seats on a long flight to Hawaii can be an ordeal. That is if you pay a high enough fare and choose an airline that offers advance seat selection. It’s an important part of the airline ticketing process and choosing wisely can determine in part how much you enjoy your 5+ hour flight to Hawaii.

It is always great to travel with extra legroom or get upgraded using points or cash into premium economy or business class, but that isn’t always possible either due to affordability or availability. As we mentioned, premium seats to Hawaii are in far greater demand than ever before, and people stand ready to fork over the extra money in order to be comfortable. So the only option may be to select the best economy seats available, especially for such a long duration.

Airlines, including Hawaiian, are now charging extra for some regular economy seats.

Earlier this week we wrote Hawaiian Adds $19-23 Fee for Many Economy Seats . Airlines other than Southwest let you pick your seat. But there can be an extra charge for seat assignments, especially on the cheapest tickets and for those seats found near the front, plus aisle or window seats. But when the alternative is sitting in the middle, or not being seated together with your travel companions at all, that can be a real bummer when starting out on your Hawaii vacation.

Everyone has their own take on what’s best.

Seats that are in one class are the same as others, in terms of their physical dimensions. But in other ways, they may not be equal, as experienced travelers will definitely attest to.

One thing to decide on is whether you want an aisle seat or window seat, or whether, when two are traveling together, will one of you accept a middle seat? Also, make note of the distance from restrooms in terms of potential convenience as well as annoyance.

Do you prefer seating near the front of the plane?

We definitely both do. We like not seeing all the other people on the plane. It doesn’t really make sense, but somehow it feels less claustrophobic. Also, it’s great to be among the first to get off the plane on arrival in Hawaii. When you have a connection en route, sitting forward helps reduce the concern about a missed flight.

Will you be able to easily stow your carry-ons?

That’s a real concern. And it isn’t always easy to figure out since it involves both where you’re sitting and the airline’s boarding plan. Sometimes, too, overhead bins near bulkheads will be used by flight attendants. Generally, sitting near the back gives you more access to overhead storage, depending on when you board.

Two-across economy seating is becoming somewhat of a rarity.

Airlines flying to Hawaii have moved to more single-aisle, narrow-body aircraft for the majority of their flights. These are almost exclusive 3-across seating. Check when booking to see if some flights might still be on wide-body aircraft. Those are offered depending on route and flight by American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and United Airlines. Both Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines only fly narrow-body aircraft to Hawaii.

Aisle and window seats are now monetized.

The airlines know that we hate middle seats and they are in the process of fully monetizing window and aisle seating whenever possible. Even on aircraft with two-abreast seating, airlines will try to charge extra for those sections to the degree they can.

This old trick no longer works.

In a plane with three-across seating, an old trick was to reserve in a row that was open, even better towards the rear, and then select window and aisle seats, leaving the middle seat open. When the plane was not full, that often provided an opportunity for two people to share three seats. But airlines filling nearly every seat, that is not likely to happen any longer.

But this old trick still does work.

When traveling with a companion and neither of you is willing to sit in a middle seat, many will opt to select adjacent aisle seats. We have done that ourselves. We had a comment on that practice from Ted, who said, “An annoying pattern I’ve noticed is that before when 2 people traveled they usually took aisle/middle or window/middle seats. What’s happening now is each person taking aisle seats across each other.”

And so does this one.

Check on your reservation frequently from the time of booking until your flights. In today’s rapidly changing travel world, your flight could have been changed, the aircraft type might not be the same, or other seats may have become available. Whatever may have happened, do check to be sure everything is as you expect.

How to check for the best seats on your flight to Hawaii.

Some seat locations simply are more comfortable than others. Depending on the aircraft, seats can include more or less legroom, and some seats in front of exit rows may not even recline. There are other issues too, such as fixed armrests between seats. Two websites that we use to check seating on all aircraft are Seat Guru and Seat Maestro. We like checking both to see if they yield the same results. You’ll enter the date and flight in most cases or may need to identify the specific aircraft type assigned for your flight. Both websites show you a depiction of the seat map, with indications of which seats are better and why, as well as which ones you should avoid. You can also check the seat width and the seat pitch using these websites, which is especially helpful if, like editor Rob, you happen to be 6′ 4″.

Choose your seats as soon as possible.

That gives you the best selection of seats to choose from. Ideally, that happens in the same process as purchasing flights. If that isn’t possible, and you have to obtain seats 24 hours before departure, set an alarm so you’re there at the exact moment you can check in and not one minute later.

Twenty-four hours before travel is also the ideal time to change seats if you had reserved ones that aren’t your favorite, or are hoping for an upgrade. When that doesn’t work either, the last choice is to arrive at the airport early to see what is possible.

Well I am on a A430 neo and don’t think there is an avenue to choose a best seat. They are all small seats for a 6 foot woman, unless you can afford the big upgrades.

Spirit and Frontier just scrapped some fees, but brace for extra charges on these 10 U.S. airlines

A irlines have made a billion-dollar business charging fees for seat selection, checked bags and other tiny conveniences — but some carriers are starting to overhaul these policies as the Biden administration cracks down on fees that it calls hidden and unnecessary.  

Budget carrier Spirit Airlines announced earlier this week that it would scrap change and cancellation fees, following a similar move by Frontier Airlines The airlines announced these changes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of the industry and its add-on charges.

Frontier’s new policy doesn’t apply to its lowest-tier “basic” fare. 

While major airlines have increasingly done away with change and cancellation fees in recent years, flying still comes with a number of other possible charges — including for redeeming flight miles, bringing a carry-on bag or picking a window seat.

Baggage fees across major U.S. airlines increased from $4.9 billion to $6.8 billion between 2018 and 2022, and seat-selection fees generated an estimated $4.2 billion in 2022, according to Sen. Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut Democrat who chaired a subcommittee investigating these fees. 

The Biden administration is working to make what it calls hidden “junk fees” generally more transparent so that consumers know up front how much they will be charged for purchases like flight tickets. Such fees cost consumers extra on everything from concert tickets to rental applications , officials have said, while banking and credit-card fees have also been a target. 

This month, President Joe Biden signed into law a bill renewing the Federal Aviation Administration’s authority for five years. In addition to investing in air-travel infrastructure and safety improvements , the law prohibits airlines from charging fees for families to sit together, and requires them to offer automatic cash refunds when they cancel or significantly change flights.

In response, airlines are suing the Department of Transportation , claiming it has gone beyond its authority and that information on fees is already accessible. 

“Airlines already provide consumers with complete disclosure of all fees associated with air travel before they purchase a ticket,” a spokesperson for Airlines for America, an industry trade group involved in the lawsuit, said in a statement. The DOT’s new rule will “greatly confuse consumers” with additional information that will complicate their purchase, the statement said.

Airlines have been some of the worst offenders when it comes to surprise fees that can unexpectedly hike costs for customers, said Teresa Murray, director of the consumer watchdog office at U.S. PIRG, an advocacy group. 

Fees are often applied unevenly across ticketing tiers and policies can vary widely from airline to airline, she said, making it difficult to understand what fees might apply to your purchase. 

“A lot of people don’t fly that often, so it’s an even bigger challenge,” Murray said. “It’s a spin the wheel, close your eyes and guess how much the ticket is going to be [situation]. It’s a surprise.”

Even if airlines widely scrap various charges like change, cancellation and seat-selection fees, they might just end up making up the difference by increasing airfare, Murray added. “I would not be surprised if the crackdown on fee disclosure leads to higher ticket prices,” she said.

As the summer travel season kicks off, MarketWatch compiled a list of fees charged by the 10 largest U.S. airlines as of mid-May. This list focuses specifically on the lowest-cost tier of tickets, such as American Airlines’ Basic Economy fare or Alaska Airlines’ Saver tier. 

When MarketWatch reached out to the airlines for comment, spokespeople from several companies responded with links to the fees sections of their websites. Those sometimes involved navigating menus and tables and inputting information about the flight or the size and weight of bags, which travelers may not know until they have packed. The fee structures typically varied depending on the route, as well as the price tier of a ticket — with the least protection for low-cost or economy-class tickets.

Alaska Airlines

Change fee: Saver fares cannot be changed. Other tickets have no change fee. 

Cancellation fee: None.

Baggage fee: None for carry-on luggage, which includes one personal item and one carry-on bag.

Seat-selection fee: Purchasing a Saver fare means you won’t be able to pick your seat. Other tickets have no seat-selection fee.

Miles-redemption fee: A security charge of about $5.60 on domestic flights, plus an additional $12.50 per person each way if using Alaska award miles to book a flight on a partner airline (American Airlines, British Airways, etc.).

Allegiant Air

Change fee: Up to $75 per person each way for an Allegiant Air flight purchased without Trip Flex, a travel-insurance-like protection that can be purchased for an additional fee when you book the flight. For a non-Trip Flex trip, no changes are allowed within seven days of travel.

Cancellation fee: $25 for a booking canceled after 24 hours and purchased without Trip Flex.

Baggage fee: A personal item is free, but fees range from $10 to $75 for a carry-on bag. Checking a bag at the airport will cost you $75, though you can save up to half that amount if you pay to check a bag at the time you purchase your ticket, according to the airline’s online bag-fee calculator . 

Seat-selection fee: Ranges from $0 to $80. 

Miles-redemption fee : None.

American Airlines

Change fee: Basic Economy fares can’t be changed. No change fees for other ticket tiers.

Baggage fee: None for carry-on luggage. $40 for your first checked bag on a domestic flight.

Seat-selection fee: Ranges from $4 to $280, depending on the seat and flight . For Basic Economy fares, seats will automatically be assigned at check-in for passengers who don’t select a seat.

Miles-redemption fee: None.

Delta Air Lines

Change fee: Basic Economy tickets are nonchangeable on Delta flights. For main-cabin tickets and above, no change fee.

Cancellation fee: None for flights originating from the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.

Baggage fee: None for carry-on luggage. $35 for your first checked bag on a domestic flight.

Seat-selection fee: Averages $15 or more , depending on the flight and seat, according to NerdWallet.

Miles-redemption fee: At least $11.20 in U.S. government taxes and fees for domestic itineraries.

Frontier Airlines

Change fee: $49 to $99 for basic fares on Frontier if you change within 60 days of departure.

Cancellation fee: $99 for basic fares, or free if you cancel within 24 hours of booking and the trip is at least seven days away.

Baggage fee: There are fees for carry-ons and checked bags, and the cost varies by flight.

Seat-selection fee: Starts at $11.

Miles-redemption fee: Fees range from $15 to $75 if you book within 180 days before departure.

Hawaiian Airlines

Change fee: Main Cabin Basic tickets are nonchangeable on Hawaiian Airlines flights.

Cancellation fee: None if you cancel within 24 hours of booking and the trip is at least seven days away. After that, Main Cabin Basic tickets are nonrefundable.

Baggage fee: One carry-on bag is free. First checked bag is $15 to $40. 

Seat-selection fee: Not available for Main Cabin Basic passengers.

JetBlue Airways

Change fee: For Blue Basic passengers on JetBlue flights, changes (including same-day switches and standby) are not allowed.

Cancellation fee: For Blue Basic passengers, $100 (for routes in North America, Central America or the Caribbean) or $200 (for other routes). 

Baggage fee: For Blue Basic passengers, no carry-ons are allowed. The first checked bag is $35.

Seat-selection fee: Starts at $5.

Miles-redemption fee: None, but you can’t use miles toward Blue Basic fares.

Southwest Airlines

Change fee: None.

Cancellation fee: No refunds for Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus passengers on Southwest flights. Credit will be issued if you cancel at least 10 minutes before scheduled departure.

Baggage fee: No fee for carry-on and first two checked bags up to 50 pounds.

Seat-selection fee: No assigned seating.

Spirit Airlines

Change fee: Changes can be made up to an hour before scheduled departure. Fare differences may apply.

Cancellation fee: Full refund in the original form of payment if canceled within 24 hours of booking for a flight that is seven or more days away. Those who are not entitled to a refund will get travel credit. 

Baggage fee: Starts at $39 for carry-ons and $34 for the first checked bag.

Miles-redemption fee: $50 for flights booked within 28 days of departure.

United Airlines

Change fee: Basic Economy passengers on United flights cannot make changes. No change fees for Economy, Economy Plus and Premium Plus passengers. 

Cancellation fee: Basic Economy tickets can be canceled and refunded within 24 hours of booking, as long as it’s one week or more before your scheduled departure.

Baggage fee: Basic Economy passengers cannot bring a carry-on except for flights to South America, across the Atlantic or across the Pacific. First checked bag is $40, or $35 if you prepay.

Seat-selection fee: Starts at $15 per person.

US airlines sue Biden administration, want upfront pricing regulation blocked

Several U.S. airlines are joining forces in a lawsuit challenging the Biden administration's recent rule that would require carriers to display the full cost of a flight — including crucial add-on charges — upfront.

The U.S. Department of Transportation exceeded its authority in issuing the regulation late last month, argued American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue. Airlines for America, the U.S. airline industry's lobbying group, also joined. Notably, Southwest Airlines declined to join the suit.

The lawsuit against the DOT, filed Friday in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, calls for a judge to set aside the rule. Airlines describe the rule as "arbitrary," an "abuse of discretion" and "otherwise contrary to law."

Challenging a recent DOT rule

Last month, the DOT issued two separate rules .

One would require airlines to automatically issue refunds to passengers in the event of a cancellation or significant delay. They would also have to refund for extra paid services like inflight Wi-Fi when the paying customer doesn't actually receive the service (as is the case when Wi-Fi malfunctions).

Those measures could end up codified in the Federal Aviation Administration's reauthorization bill currently making its way through Congress.

The second DOT rule is the one at issue in this lawsuit. It would require airlines and third-party ticket sellers to immediately disclose crucial ancillary charges the first time the flight's price is displayed.

Under the regulation, by late April 2025, airlines would have to more clearly disclose the cost of a first and second checked bag, a full-size carry-on bag and any change or cancellation fees right away — when customers first see a fare.

Airlines would also have to use DOT boilerplate language to explain to passengers that they will get a seat assignment, even if they don't choose to pay for one.

Airlines decry regulation

The ancillary fees regulation is a "bad solution in search of a problem," the U.S. airline industry's top trade groups argued. Ultimately, the rule will "confuse customers" and "complicate the buying process," Airlines for America said.

"DOT's attempt to regulate private business operations in a thriving marketplace is beyond its authority," the organization said in a statement to TPG Tuesday. "Airlines go to great lengths to make their customers knowledgeable about these fees."

Biden administration responds

For its part, the DOT isn't backing down. It told TPG it would "vigorously defend" the rule; the rule protects travelers from "hidden junk fees" and helps consumers see the full price of a flight upfront, according to the DOT.

"Many air travelers will be disappointed to learn that the airline lobby is suing to stop these common-sense protections," the agency said in a statement.

President Joe Biden has made cracking down on so-called "junk fees" a central part of his term — honing in on airlines and hotels, along with sectors throughout the economy — in the name of consumer protection.

The administration has also taken a harder regulatory stance on other aspects of the airline industry. Under President Biden, the U.S. Department of Justice successfully blocked the Northeast Alliance between American and JetBlue, as well as JetBlue's proposed merger with Spirit Airlines — both on antitrust grounds.

W ith the busy summer travel season now officially upon us, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says it is prepared for the highest passenger volumes the agency has ever seen at airport security checkpoints from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

Don’t be surprised to see flight disruptions. Weather-related delays peak in the summertime, and the airline industry is still challenged by Boeing delivery delays and sky-high demand for air travel. “Flight disruption remains above historical norms,” according to a recent report from global travel technology company Amadeus .

Importantly, this will be the first summer where virtually all commercial airline passengers who encounter flight cancellations and significant delays will have the flexibility to change their plans without incurring a fee.

This month, Frontier and Spirit eliminated nearly all change and cancellation fees, which lets travelers modify flights without penalty. These moves bring these ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs) in line with the larger airlines, which got rid of most change fees during the pandemic (except for the cheapest, most restrictive tickets).

Customers of these discount carriers are well-versed in the trade-offs inherent in their business models. In exchange for dirt-cheap fares, they get a bare-bones experience and are nickel and dimed for literally everything else. In many cases, the litany of add-on fees for services like carry-on bags, checked bags and seat selection could often add up to more than $120 per person.

But there’s been a shift at Frontier Airlines, which just rolled out three fare bundles — economy, premium and business — to join its unbundled basic fare. While bundles aren’t new to Frontier, they now appear at the front of the booking process. What’s more, the no-frills carrier’s economy amenities now look a lot like the economy offerings of legacy carriers. Seats can be selected for free at booking. Carry-on bags used to cost $64 a pop; now they are now included in the fare. Children age 13 or under and an accompanying adult are seated together at no additional cost. Change fees and cancel fees are gone.

In response, Spirit Airlines, another ULCC, also dropped its change fees (formerly $69-119) and cancellation fees.

“This is the new Frontier, and we are committed to offering more than the lowest fares — we deliver the best price for all the options you want and customer support you need, when you need it,” Frontier CEO, Barry Biffle, said. “No gimmicks. Just really low prices and good customer service.” Frontier is also bringing back phone customer service after a rocky 18-month experiment of trying chat-only agents.

On the downside, Frontier’s cramped seating (euphemistically referred to on earnings calls as “cabin density”) isn’t changing. Snacks and drinks still cost extra. And budget-conscious customers will still want to travel light, since its $75 first-checked bag fee remains significantly higher than the $35 charged by other airlines. (Southwest remains an outlier for not charging baggage fees.)

Meanwhile, most major U.S. airlines — including American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Hawaiian and Alaska, as well as the industry’s biggest lobbying group — are suing the Department of Transportation (DOT) for an April ruling that U.S. airlines must disclose so-called “junk fees.”

Southwest Airlines is not suing the DOT, explaining that it already allows passengers to check two bags for free and does not charge extra for changing or canceling reservations. Neither Spirit nor Frontier joined the lawsuit.

The Biden administration also recently announced a new rule requiring airlines to offer automatic cash refunds for cancellations instead of waiting for customers to request them. But while Congress’s FAA Reauthorization Bill codifies the threshold for when a refund would be required (after a three-hour delay for a domestic flight or six hours for an international flight) and requires airlines to establish reimbursement policies for cancellations or significant delays caused by the airline, it doesn’t mandate automatic refunds.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
