Movie Review: PRAYBEYT BENJAMIN (StarCinema and Viva Films

In this movie Vice plays the role of Benjamin Santos whose family has a long tradition of serving in the military. In fact, the movie’s stunning opening traces the roots of the Santos’ military service, from the days of Lapu-lapu and the Katipunan, up to the current times.

Conflict ensues when Lolo Benjamin which was played by Eddie Garcia finds out that his grandson (Vice) cannot continue the tradition because he is gay. But when Lolo Benjamin is captured by terrorists, the grandson enters the military and musters all his masculine strength to save his dear grandfather, and the rest of the war-torn country as well.

The film was narrated in a gag way that I had to let go of the crazy kid in me in an outburst. The first 30 minutes of the movie, I already knew that the film will drive me crazy. The story as summarized above is interesting but not deep. It is perfect for those who miss laughing so hard. And I mean it!

Vice Ganda might be over exposed as we see her everyday. But his humor will always be original, unexpected and unique. In the movie what he did was he tried to be minimalist with occasional punch. It required him to do much of a facial expression.

Im happy that Eddie Garcia is included in the movie. His presence and role made it more appealing and respectful. We all know that Eddie Garcia is Eddie Garcia. I can still laugh at his way of doing his signature jokes. So as Jimmy Santos , my favorite since Oki Doki Dok. I would say I miss him for quite sometime and glad to see him at Gandang Gabi Vice. His role as a scientist made the story more interesting as most of his creations were successful inventions at the time Benjamin Santos needed help. Jimmy Santos should be given more exposure to comedy.

Supporting to the role of Benjamin Santos are DJ Durano , Vandolph Quizon , Carlos Agassi , Tutti Caringal, Kean Cipriano and Nikki Valdez . They are perfectly not overshadowing the underdog. Nikki’s role is very important as (trying not to spoil) she is one of Benjamin’s friend that helped the group. I cannot recall how many times these group made me laugh especially when they are already on the training camp and, the humor behind where they came from. They have very unique characters, minimalist but enough to make us laugh.

I have seen the types of plot like these and I know that it’s just a ‘plain happy > conflicts > climax > happy ending’ but it’s totally different! Who would not laugh on flashbacks, segue ways and Vice Ganda’s own way of delivery? All I can mention is that it is sustaining from the beginning ‘til the end. I just don’t like the way the credits we’re presented at the beginning. Or maybe Im just used to Deramas’ previous blockbuster works.  Although of course I cannot give the credit fully compared with the success of Tanging Ina Series but should you want a good laugh? You should check out the film. And did I mentioned the keyword? “Its raining men!” plus a very special guest appeared on the end. “Napadaan ba.”

And, bloopers were also included at the end. But don’t leave the cinema yet, because there’s a big announcement of thickening plot? Perhaps I remember an Okey Ka Fairy Ko’s way of telling that there is a sequel.

Overall, the MOVIE IS A VERY GOOD LAUGH!

My 5 favorite scenes are:

• Shower scene.
• That Vice Ganda’s daydreaming (Partly shown in the trailer)
• The execution of special weapons invented by the father of Benjamin Santos especially the umbrella and tiara.
• Massage part.
• The Dance part when Eddie Garcia punched Benjamin Santos.

Enjoy the movie guys! The movie is Graded B by Cinema Evaluation Board.

This movie is entertaining but should at least be rated PG-13 because of its homosexual references. I don’t understand why the MTRCB gave it a PG only. The movie not only sensationalized homosexuality but subliminally encouraged it. Homosexual relationships may be legal under civil law but it shouldn’t be exposed brutally out in the open where children can easily pick up the behaviour. If the MTRCB will rate this movie PG for uninhibited exposure to homosexual behavior, then it should only give a rating of PG-13 for movies with nudity, gross violence, and other sensitive subject matter like paedophilia and incest. I have nothing personal against homosexuality. But if MTRCB can’t do its job right, then it should be disbanded.

I'm sorry, I know most Filipino cinephiles find it deeply embarrassing that movies like this are their country's most popular, but I really enjoyed this, found it spectacularly funny throughout, with a devil-may-care attitude to comedy that reminded me of nothing short of the Marx Brothers, with Vice Ganda as the perpetually horny, libidinal Harpo.

Ready for the sequel!

(Special attention to the supporting performances: Derek Ramsay and Eddie Garcia act the hell out of what are terrible roles on paper, but, employing the Leslie Nielsen-in- Airplane role, play them perfectly straight, which in the anarchy around them makes them sooo much funnier.)

Not to be confused by the Goldie Hawn movie, "Praybeyt Benjamin" (or the Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin) is a Filipino comedy starring one of the Philippines most famous personalities. Directed by Wenn V. Deramas who pretty much pumps out films year after year of the same quality.

To make everything clear, this is not a good movie but is enjoyable enough that its watchable at least. Vice Ganda who is funny in his Pinoy variety show "Its Showtime", is not as funny here, which I expected since the reason he's funny in his show is because its improv, but here it feels forced and plain corny.

The thing about these movies that you know its bad but it has a sense…

MMFF 2014 REVIEW: The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin

It is unknown when Filipino comedies will do away with the ubiquitous kidnapping scenes and predictable dance numbers, nevertheless, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin succeeds in bringing its signature humor to entertain movie audiences young and old alike in the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

In Praybeyt Benjamin 2, Vice Ganda’s character Benjie is now an international celebrity, having used his heroics to save the world from a zombie attack. Because he has allowed success to get in his head, Benjie is subjected to disciplinary action by the military. He is now under the authority of commanding officer General Wilson Chua, played by Richard Yap. His important assignment: to gain the confidence of a brat kid named B2 (played by Bimby Aquino-Yap), the General’s estranged child who holds the secret to the locations of terrorist bombs set to go off in the Philippines. In the process, Benjie locks horns with Bimby’s yaya Gundina, played by Alex Gonzaga.

This MMFF 2014 entry makes you feel all sorts of emotions all at once: delight at the witty exchange of lines between Vice and Alex, sympathy towards Bimby who lost his mom and eventually finds a friend in Vice Ganda, and surprise at the lengths Richard would go to portray his role.

Tom Rodriguez as the villain Janjaranjan is a revelation: his acting is reminiscent of Sam Rockwell, who portrayed the enemy Eric Knox in 2000’s Charlie’s Angels. Janjaranjan is terribly evil but obviously very weak, and his refusal to accept defeat eventually leads to his downfall. Even Tom’s fight scenes are worth a second look.

Alex tries to steer clear of looking and sounding like her older sister Toni Gonzaga, and successfully establishes her own brand of acting in the movie. She wears one costume for the duration of the movie (her yaya uniform), but one hardly notices that as she sharply shoots off her lines, some of which are obvious but effective adlibs.

Kris Aquino makes a cameo appearance as Bimby’s mom, and allusions are inevitably made to her own MMFF entry this year, Feng Shui 2 . Bimby himself has shown improvement in delivering his lines since his movie debut in My Little Bossings last year. His camaraderie with Vice off-screen is noticeable in their scenes together.

Save for one loophole in the plot – the conflict between Bimby and the father he feels never really loved him remains unresolved – Praybeyt Benjamin 2 is worth your couple of hours at the cinema this holiday season. That is, if you are not looking for a lesson in history, a love story, or a good scare, and would settle for a light and funny action comedy.

Vice and Direk Wenn Deramas’ tandem has already raked in millions at the box office with the Praybeyt Benjamin franchise, and the MMFF has yet to wrap up its first week. Do we see a third movie in the horizon? The possibility is not too far-fetched. Watch the post-credits snippet to get a peek at the next assignment the Praybeyt-turned-Colonel Benjamin Santos VIII is only too willing to accept. On a mission in Paris, Praybeyt Benjamin and his platoon defeat a horde of zombies in a parody of Plants vs. Zombies, leading to his promotion to Colonel. To prepare him better, Benjamin is assigned under a new general, Wilson Chua. However, Benjamin screws up a subsequent mission against terrorists led by Jan Jaranjan and is narrowly rescued by his grandfather, who sacrifices himself to save him. Benjamin is about to be dismissed from service when Gen. Chua saves him by giving him a mission – to guard his bratty son Bimbee, who holds a clue to the location of the terrorists’ next three bomb attacks. As he watches over Bimbee, Benjamin finds himself clashing with Misty, General Chua’s daughter, and the meddlesome housemaid Gundina, while trying to gain information from a recalcitrant Bimby. However, as he gets to know Bimbee more, he learns that Bimbee is a kid deprived of love from family – something that he has ignored in his quest to be on top again. The first bomb explodes harmlessly while the second is found and defused by Benjamin, who is fired shortly afterward after his arrogance causes a screw-up. While relearning his humility with his family, the terrorists abduct Bimby and take him to their last target, a shopping mall. Benjamin is reinstated into the army, rescues Bimby, and defuses the bomb, after which he flies off with Bimby on an umbrella resembling that of Mary Poppins.

The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin is the sequel to The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin.

The film is one of the official entries to the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino revealed that The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin topped the box office record of the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival’s opening day on December 25, 2014, in a radio interview in DZMM.

Despite being a high-grossing film at the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival, the reception for The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin generally received negative reviews.

A third film was announced as it is officially part of the 46th Metro Manila Film Festival. Vice Ganda was expected to reprise his role. Its entry in the film festival was based on its script.

Filming for the Praybeyt Benjamin sequel has yet to take place as of October 2020 due to logistics issue caused by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as uncertainties caused by the non-renewal of ABS-CBN’s broadcast franchise.

As a script-based submission, the Praybeyt Benjamin film would have to be produced by November 30, 2020.

The film was not among the final ten official entries of the film festival announced in November 2020. As of 2022, no further updates for the film, and later both will be starring on the upcoming MMFF 2022 film called Partners in Crime.

The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin was released on December 25, 2014. The film generally received negative reviews from critics.
