1. Admission to PhD 2024 Programme

The PhD programme conducted by RRI aims to empower its students with advanced technical abilities in basic science and in a specialization, so as to prepare them for a career in research. The programme commences with formal credited course work in advanced topics during the first year. RRI offers select PhD students, who qualify in the course work and a subsequent comprehensive examination, opportunities for supervised research within the four broad areas of research conducted at the institute – Astronomy and Astrophysics, Light and Matter Physics, Soft Condensed Matter Physics and Theoretical Physics.

Students at RRI are registered for their PhD degree with Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. RRI is also a participant in the Joint Astronomy Programme (JAP) with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Postdoctoral position in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics

A postdoctoral position in theoretical condensed matter physics is open in the department of physics at IIT Bombay. The position is primarily with Hridis Pal, but the selected candidate is welcome to collaborate with other members of the theoretical condensed matter group, such as Soumya Bera and Sumiran Pujari. The selected candidate will be supported by IIT Bombay Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship; for details, in particular the eligibility requirements, please refer to  https://www.iitb.ac.in/en/careers/institute-post-doctoral-fellows-recruitment . The project will involve topics mainly related to interaction and transport in topological semimetals. A basic knowledge of quantum field theory as used in quantum condensed matter physics is necessary. Computational expertise at the level of Mathematica or Matlab is sufficient.

Postdoctoral position in Theoretical Quantum Condensed Matter Physics

We have one-two open institute postdoctoral position in quantum condensed matter physics. The position is shared between Soumya Bera and Sumiran Pujari. We are interested in topics related to strongly correlated systems, disorder driven phase transitions, non-equilibrium phenomenon and quantum magnetism. Competence in numerical techniques such as DMRG, ED and/or QMC is preferable. The position is open until filled and available immediately for up to two years.

Tenure: 2 years

Fellowship: As per institute norms.

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics is a DST-funded, research institute, devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics and related areas of physics. The main campus is located in Koramangala, Bangalore. Additionally, the institute also has various field centres, including the Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST) at Hosakote, Bangalore, and the observing facilities at Gauribidanur, Hanle, Kavalur and Kodaikanal.

IIA conducts two Ph.D. programmes, (a) IIA-PU Ph.D. Programme and (b) IIA-CU Integrated M.Tech - Ph.D. (Tech.) Programme in Astronomical Instrumentation . IIA invites application to these two Ph.D. programmes from interested and highly motivated students. The eligibility criteria for admission to this program can be found here

Having pioneered several curricular and pedagogic attributes, BITS Pilani has a vision to be amongst the top research-led Institutes in the country. The qualities of innovation, enterprise, commitment to excellence, adherence to merit, and transparency, have characterized the Institute during its inexorable march to eminence.

The Institute has secured over Rs 398 crores as external research funding in the last 5 years. State of the art facilities have been developed to support cutting edge research, led by students and about 930 faculty members, leading to a Scopus h-index of 156, with 221 patents filed so far, and 41 patents granted. Currently, there are 14 BITSian Unicorns and 1 Decacorn. There are over 7500 BITSian founders and co-founders of enterprises.

Minimum Eligibility Qualifications

ME / MTech / MPharm / MBA / MPhil (minimum of 60% aggregate)* MSc/BE/BPharm or an equivalent degree (minimum of 60% aggregate)* For admission into Humanities and Social Sciences, MA degree (minimum of 55% aggregate)* For part-time applicants, a minimum of one-year experience in the related field of study is required

In addition, Departments may set specific admission criteria for shortlisting. Meeting the minimum eligibility qualifications does not guarantee admission into the PhD program. Shortlisted candidates will have to appear for an admission test, which may comprise a written exam and/or interview. Information on specific Departments and related research activities is available on the Department homepage of respective campuses.

Full-time students

Preferably individuals who would like to pursue PhD in-house, residing on campus.

Part-time students

Preferably individuals who are working in organizations providing basic facilities and an environment for research.

Financial Assistance

Full-time PhD students admitted into the PhD program are eligible to be considered for an Institute fellowship of Rs. 34,000 or Rs. 37,000 per month in the first year based on their qualifications at the time of admission. Students admitted with M.E./M.Tech./M.Pharm./MBA/M.Phil. or an equivalent Degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 37,000/-. Students admitted with M.Sc./B.E./B.Pharm. or an equivalent degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 34,000/-. These students on successful completion of coursework will receive Rs. 37,000/- from the Semester following the one in which the course work was completed Higher fellowship may be made available in subsequent years. Consideration for Institute fellowship will be as per Institute norms. It will be obligatory on the part of every admitted full time student to undertake 8 hours (per week) of work as assigned to him/her by the institute.
