NYU Stern [Internal Transfer] - A Comprehensive Guide For All Applicants

Hi Everyone,

I have recently been accepted to NYU Stern as an Internal Transfer and I wanted to share some advice to any potential applicants next year. From what I heard from the admissions office, over 1000 applicants applied to Stern, and there was a 10% acceptance rate. Please keep in mind that the admissions process is very competitive and you should apply with a strong backup in mind. Feel free to respond to this post with any questions and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Required Courses: Cultures and Context (or Cultural Foundations I, II, and III) Text and Ideas (Or Social Foundations I, II, and III) Writing the Essay (Or Writing I and II) Calculus I (Or Math for Econ I and Math for Econ II) Intro to Microeconomics Statistics and Regression (6 Credits) (Or 4 and 2 Credit Split) Financial Accounting Intermediate Microeconomics (*This is a suggested course, but I know of someone who was rejected with a 4.0 GPA and this was the only suggested course he/she was missing)

Suggested Courses: Intro to Macroeconomics Calculus II (if not taking Math for Econ II) Intro to Marketing (or another Business Core Course at Stern) Foundations of Finance

*Any Quantitative/Business Course will be a good addition to your transcript as well, so there are many other courses that can be included under suggested courses, but the ones I listed were the ones I took (unless I italicized the course).

Grades Needed: You should have a 3.80 GPA or higher. I had a 3.91 GPA without the admissions office checking my Intermediate Micro Grade (B+) as I took the course during the Spring Semester of Sophomore Year. Also, that 3.80+ GPA grade must come from the courses that Stern actually cares about, such as Calculus I, Financial Accounting, Intro to Micro, and Statistic & Regression. You should not get below an A- in any of those courses.

Application Deadline: March 1 (Try to submit your application essays before February 1)

Lastly, try not to keep all of the tough courses for the second half of the semester because Stern will prioritize applicants who have completed certain courses rather than one’s who are in the process. The only course I suggest you take during Spring semester that is very important is Intermediate Micro (this advice applies to Sophomore applicants, as they have more courses to take).

Good luck on your transfer applications everyone! Hope you make it!

P.S. Freshman Applicants will not be required to take all of those courses. I have also posted some links below relating to Internal Transfer Applicants.

This is definitely a valuable post but honestly I find it hard to believe that of the 1000 people who applied, 10% were let in. You are telling me that Stern adds 100 kids every year from internal transfer? Highly doubt that. The graduating class is not going to change that significantly from its start of ~600-610.

Hello SternBusiness,

As I said above, that is what the admissions office directly told me. They could just be giving random numbers, but I do not think they would do that. Furthermore, at the transfer orientation, I would say I saw just about 100 students. Nothing posted above is 100% certain, it is just information through my experience and what I heard/saw from others.

Is it only possible to transfer during freshmen/sophomore year? Still though, I find it so hard to believe that the class size will grow to 800 by graduation. In addition, when looking at Stern’s undergraduate website the “By the numbers” section states that total undergraduate enrollment is 2575. With a class size of approximately 610, that leaves 135 addditional spots over 4 grade levels.

I think you have forgotten that many students do transfer out to even better schools like Wharton. Look, I’m not trying to lie about anything in this post. I thought I made it clear that this is just through what I heard and went through, not through hard facts and figures.

And to answer your question, it is only possible to transfer during Freshman or Sophomore year. Say the upcoming sophomore class receives 50 students and the upcoming junior class receives the other 50, then the class size for each grade rises to ~660. That number does not include the amount of students who transfer out. Many students end up transferring to Wharton and other Business Schools. Therefore, accepting 100 students total per year is not such a crazy figure when you have over 1000 internal transfer applicants. Furthermore, figures may differ every year depending on the students who choose to transfer out and the amount of applicants Stern has. Lastly, the class of 2015-2016 enrollment was 592, which leaves more space for internal transfer applicants as well. Once again, figures are different every year, but the “100” number I was told of was given to me straight from the admissions office.

@Anonymous222 You said freshman applicants won’t be required to take all of the courses. Do you mean freshmen who are trying to internally transfer? Or do you mean freshman as in first time college freshmen?

@Anonymous222 What was your GPA when you applied? Not just from the Stern courses but overall. Also, how many sophomores do you think there were or you know applied and got in?

Hey, my GPA overall when I applied was a 3.86. In terms of the Sophomore/Junior breakdown, I would say it was roughly 70 Sophomores and 30 Juniors. Also, about 25 out of the 100 transfer students came from LSP, the rest were from other schools in NYU such as CAS and Gallatin.

Hey if my gpa is a 3.875 I got a B+ in calc I and a A- in my intro to macro class and all As in my cultural, social, and writing classes. What do you think are my chances?

My mistake that was an A- in principles of microeconomics

Hey, those are great stats! I think you have a good chance as long as you take Intermediate Micro and get at least a B+ in it.

So which courses do you suggest to take in the fall and spring semester? How to divide them will be better? (great posy btw!! really helpful!!)

Does the Expository Writing program have to be completed when apply? Is the courses list in the post for sophomore who applied at the end of the third semester or the forth? Can I apply at the end of the third semester, before the deadline of November.? I am an international student, so I have to take one more required writing course which makes me unable to take both the Text & Ideas and Contexts & Culture. Will that be a problem?

In the end, thank you so much for this post! Glad I get to see this before I plan for my first-year curriculum. Here is an incoming student! Bow to the elder!

Hi, from what I saw on the Stern website, they only consider transfer students for the fall semester, meaning the deadline is March 1.

Hi, I am an incoming lsp freshman this year and I’ve talked to some of the seniors from NYU, I can say it’s pretty accurate that Stern accepts about 100 transfer applicants.(One senior from class of 2020 told me quite a lot of the students he knew got accepted, don’t know the exact number though) I understand that there is an application essay we must write, can you tell us about the essay? Thank you so much!

I wonder why it is better to submit the application earlier than the deadline. Also, I would appreciate some advice on the transfer essay.

Hi, if i am in SPS, is there any possibility for me to transfer to Stern?

Hi, I’m applying to NYU Stern this year as a high school senior and wanted to know what secondary school is best for if I don’t get into NYU Stern but would still give me a chance of eventually internally transferring into Stern. Would I be better off indicating LSA, Gallatin or should I only indicate interest in NYU Stern and not allow them to consider me for another college within NYU if I’m not admitted into Stern? Thank you so much

Thank you for the excellent discussion regarding internal transfers from other NYU schools to NYU Stern. Does anyone have any updated perspectives, particularly over the past year or two (2018 or 2019)?

Alongside the transfer, I am wondering what kind of internship and other co-curricular activities you did.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, nyu stern internal transfer process.

Hi everyone, I'm currently a freshman at NYU and I'm considering applying for an internal transfer to Stern next year. Could someone share their experience with the Stern internal transfer process? How competitive is it and what can I do to improve my chances of being accepted?

Hello! The internal transfer process to NYU Stern can be competitive, but with proper preparation and planning, you can improve your chances of being accepted. Here's a brief overview of the process and some tips to help you navigate it:

1. Academic Requirements: Ensure that you meet the minimum GPA requirements for internal transfer, usually around a 3.5 or higher. It's important to excel in your current courses, as strong grades will demonstrate your ability to handle Stern's challenging curriculum. Focus on maintaining a solid academic record, especially in relevant courses like economics, math, and statistics.

2. Prerequisites: Before applying, you should complete the listed prerequisite courses for the program you're interested in. For example, for Business and Political Economy (BPE), you should take certain Core Curriculum classes, microeconomics, and calculus.

3. Extracurriculars: Demonstrate your passion for business and showcase leadership skills through involvement in relevant extracurricular activities. This can include joining clubs, participating in case competitions, or taking up internships in business-related fields. This involvement will show your dedication to the field and make you a stronger candidate.

4. Personal Statement: Write a compelling personal statement that showcases your passion for business, your reasons for transferring to Stern, and how it aligns with your long-term goals. Be sure to discuss your accomplishments and experiences that have prepared you for success in the program.

5. Letters of Recommendation: Obtain strong letters of recommendation from professors or advisors who can attest to your academic abilities, interest in business, and personal qualities. These recommendations can provide valuable context for your application and highlight your potential for success at Stern.

It's important to note that the internal transfer process is quite competitive, with acceptance rates varying each year depending on the number of applications and available spots. To improve your chances of being accepted, focus on boosting your academic performance, engaging in relevant extracurriculars, and crafting a memorable personal statement.

Good luck in the process!

Thinking of Transferring to NYU? Here’s What You Need to Know…

NOTE: This article was originally published in April 2021 and has been updated for the 2022-2023 admissions cycle.

First, before you begin working on your application, let’s be sure you’re a transfer applicant. You’re considered a transfer student if….

  • You completed secondary school after finishing about 12 years of education.

AND if you meet one of the following requirements:

  • You are currently (or were once) enrolled in a degree-seeking program that is regionally accredited in the US
  • You are currently (or were once) enrolled in a degree-seeking program at a school outside of the US. The institution must be nationally recognized by your country’s primary accrediting body
  • You are currently (or were once) enrolled in a non-degree seeking program but have earned 24 or more semester credits by the time you enroll at NYU.

Still with me? Next, we’ll review what you need to apply.

Application Materials

You'll want to make sure you have everything needed for your application review..

  • First, the Common App . Log on to CommonApp.org and submit an application as a transfer student. Don’t forget to select New York University as one of your schools.
  • Next, request your high school and college transcripts . This includes proper leaving certificates/diploma including a GED. Have your school officials send the transcripts directly to NYU or upload them through your Application Portal.
  • Next, submit a letter of recommendation . Recommendation letters can be from anyone in a position of authority (supervisor, professor, etc.)

Tips for a good recommendation: Choose someone who knows you. Your recommender should speak to your academic skills, character and, if possible, be someone you’ve worked with in the past year or two.  Above all else, you should make sure they’re advocating for your success (insert smile).

  • Don’t forget s tandardized testing. Are you in your first year of college? Or studying part-time and will complete less than 32 credits prior to applying?  If this is you, y ou’ll need to submit a form of standardized testing accepted by NYU. In addition, English Language Testing is required if you have not completed three full years of study in a curriculum taught in English or if English is not your native language.
  • And finally, review the a rtistic requirements. For artistic programs in Steinhdardt and Tisch, you may need to audition or submit a portfolio.

Other things to think about...

Program offerings.

For some programs at NYU, an application can only be submitted in the fall. Those programs include Global Liberal Studies, majors in the Stern School of Business, and most (but not all) majors in the Tisch School of the Arts. If you’re interest in one of these programs or schools, it’s important you’re mindful of the deadlines or you’ll be waiting a whole another year to apply (yikes!) On the other hand, the College of Arts and Science, most programs in Steinhardt (aside from a few), and lots of others allow spring transfers.

Second Bachelor's Degree

Do you already have a bachelor’s degree (from NYU or another university)?  You can earn a second bachelor’s degree in nursing or engineering at NYU. See this link for more information.

Gaps in Education

Explain any gaps in education. For example, did you take time off after earning a few credits? Or did you complete a service trip for a year? Maybe you served in the military? In other words, tell us how you spent your time! This will help us in the review process and will limit unnecessary delays.

Application Fee

While the application fee should never prevent you from applying, NYU does have a non-refundable application fee of $80.00. Alternatively, you can request a fee waiver through the application.

Finally, you'll want to be aware of any deadlines

For a fall start term, the application deadline is April 1st. For Spring the deadline is November 1st. I always recommend submitting your application (and materials) as far ahead of the deadline as possible.

How do I request an application? The online application for fall 2024  transfer admission will be available May 1.

How many credits are required to apply as a transfer candidate? Applicants for transfer must have completed one full year of study (28-33 credits) by June 15. Applicants whose law school credits fall outside of the 28-33 credit range must submit a statement explaining why they fall outside the range.

What are the deadlines for transfer admission? The application filing deadline for transfer applicants is June 15. All supporting materials must be received by June 15.

Do you offer application fee waivers? The Law School does not waive application fees for this program.

Do you require a standardized test score? If an applicant has a valid LSAT score, the score(s) must be submitted. A writing sample is required for those applicants who submit a LSAT score. Valid LSAT scores and writing samples will be submitted as part of the CAS report. Applicants are required to submit GRE scores if they submitted GRE scores to the law school at which they completed their first year of law school. GRE scores must be sent to NYU Law directly from ETS. The law school code for NYU School of Law for both LSAC and ETS is 2599.

What is weighted more heavily, fall or spring semester grades? Neither is weighted more heavily than the other. The Committee will consider grades for all courses taken.

Do you require a dean's certification from my home law school? Yes. The form should be completed by the dean of students or administrative officer with access to official records at the law school the applicant attends and emailed to [email protected] .

Do you require certification from my undergraduate institution? Yes. The college questionnaire form should be completed by the dean of students or administrative officer with access to official records at the undergraduate school from which the applicant received a baccalaureate degree and emailed to [email protected] .

How many recommendations do I need to submit? Two recommendations are required to complete your admissions application. Please do NOT submit duplicate letters directly to NYU School of Law.

How long should my personal statement be? Applicants should include a personal statement with their application on a subject of their choice. The personal statement should be double-spaced and no more than 500 words.

When can I expect to receive a decision on my application? All decisions will be made no later than the end of July.

Am I eligible to apply for or participate in financial aid, scholarships, on-campus housing, Law Review/Journals, or Early Interview Week? Transfer applicants offered admission to the Law School are eligible to apply for housing, and those enrolling at NYU School of Law may participate in Early Interview Week and may apply to participate in Law Review/Journals. Transfer applicants are not eligible for scholarships or need-based financial aid grants.

I have previously applied to the Law School's JD Program. May I use my previously submitted application materials to support my transfer application? No. Even if you have previously applied to NYU School of Law, you must submit an entirely new application and submit all required supporting material anew as well.

Does having prior involvement with the criminal justice system, such as an arrest, charges, or conviction, or answering "yes" to any of the other Character and Fitness questions on the Transfer Application, preclude me from being admitted to NYU Law? No. NYU Law strives to ensure that students in each transfer class bring with them a diversity of experience. All individuals, including those with previous criminal convictions and other prior involvement in the criminal justice system, are encouraged to apply.

Please be advised that in addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. Bar examiners consider prior criminal legal history as part of the character and fitness evaluation. This may include charges, convictions, arrests, and other forms of involvement in the criminal justice system.

Applicants are encouraged to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission by contacting the jurisdiction. The National Conference of Bar Examiners provides addresses for all relevant agencies and a Guide to Bar Admissions Requirements .

Applicants who plan to seek New York Bar admission may petition the State bar for an “advance ruling” on the effect of a felony or misdemeanor conviction upon their character and fitness evaluations. Applicants seeking such a ruling are encouraged to contact the Appellate Division of the New York State Unified Court System in which you reside; if you do not reside in New York State, please contact the Attorney Admissions Office of the Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department. Applicants who expect to practice in New York State also are encouraged to review Are You Fit to Be a Lawyer , published by the New York State Lawyer Assistance Trust.

NYU Law will use information shared in the Character and Fitness section of the application to advise and support admitted students. The Law School’s Office of Career Services and Public Interest Law Center will provide counseling to students who have questions on how a criminal legal history may impact a legal career..

Are transfer students eligible for Order of the Coif?  In order to be eligible for membership in the Order of the Coif, a graduating student must have completed at least 75% of his or her law studies in graded courses at NYU School of Law.  4-semester JD students are eligible for Order of Coif. Transfer students coursework completed for a grade in the first year of law school and transferred towards the NYU School of Law JD degree will count as completed graded credits for calculating the required 75%, however, the grades earned in the first year will not be considered. The number of students eligible to be in the top 10% of the class is computed based on the entire class, including 4-semester JDs. Ten percent of the number of 4-semester JDs are calculated, and that number is the maximum of 4-semester JDs eligible for Coif from among the top 10% of the entire class.

To prepare for the portfolio in advance, please see the questions and prompts below.

Early Decision I: November 1, 2023 Early Decision II: January 1, 2024 Regular Decision: January 5, 2024

This year’s application will go live in October 2023.

External Transfer Applicants

Any student currently (or previously) enrolled in an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree (part-time or full-time) at a nationally or internationally accredited college or university can apply to transfer for the fall semester. Applicants must complete the Common Application , and follow instructions for submitting other necessary documents. We do not admit external transfer students for the spring term.

The Game Design major is an intensive program. If you are considering transferring into the school, we recommend that you focus on taking traditional liberal arts classes that will satisfy our Gen Ed requirement, along with classes in programming. This way you can focus on the game design curriculum.

Please note that part of the program includes a 3.5 year core sequence which may delay an applicant’s graduation if coursework isn’t started beginning in the second semester of their first year.

Transfer Credits

External transfer students can receive up to 64 transfer credits. Undergraduate Admissions will provide admitted students with a preliminary statement of transfer credit, while the NYU Game Center will award credits for specific requirements. More information about transfer credits can be found here .

We are now using Slate, an application platform where you will upload your mandatory creative portfolio. Once you submit your Common Application, you will receive a link within 1-2 business days where you may submit your artistic portfolio. We highly recommend that all applicants submit their Common Application at least several days before the application deadline; this will create a small window of time for portfolio submissions before the deadline. Fall 2024 External Transfer Deadline: April 1, 2024

Internal Transfer Applicants

Current NYU students in at least their second semester of consecutive full-time study are eligible to apply as an internal transfer student to the NYU Game Center. Students in the Liberal Studies Core Program must, however, complete the Core Program before applying as an internal transfer.

Non-Tisch internal transfer applicants will apply through an internal NYU website here . Once you submit your application, you will receive an email with a unique link to your creative portfolio within 1-2 business days. More information about the process and requirements can be found here . Tisch internal transfer applicants, however, should email Jason Leahey at [email protected]; upon doing so, an application will be generated for you and you will receive an email with the link to the creative portfolio.

Students internally transferring to Tisch will be allowed to transfer 64 non-Tisch credits. Students applying to transfer for Junior Year should speak to the Game Center advisers regarding their credits.

Creative Portfolio

In addition to the common application, the NYU Game Center requires a creative portfolio.   All portfolios are submitted digitally . Late portfolios will not be accepted.

The two components of the creative portfolio are:

Short Essay Questions. Respond to all of the following questions.

  • What skills and experiences would you bring to the NYU Game Center and the creation of games, and what new interests and skills are you excited about exploring?
  • Game design encompasses both video games and non-digital games (board games, sports, etc). Compare and contrast two games you’re familiar with, one of each kind; explain what makes each one meaningful.
  • Games are typically created by teams. Tell us about a specific moment when you had to resolve creative differences with someone and whether that resolution was satisfactory.
  • Tell us about a game you know well. Explain something that the average player might find surprising or meaningful–something relatively unknown that would deepen their appreciation.
  • The world of games is rapidly changing and impacting many other areas of culture and life. What kind of games would you like to see more of and why would they matter?

Creative Project.  A creative project could be: a game you’ve made (digital or non-digital), a computer program you’ve written, a film you created, a piece of music, a creative writing sample, a portfolio of artwork, visual design, sculptures, photography or other creative pieces.  We are looking for your talent and creativity in whichever medium you choose, so choose an example that you think best shows off your strengths and ideas. While you are welcome to submit more than one project, especially if you’d like to showcase diverse talents, we recommend that you curate your portfolio carefully and show only your best work.  Please upload your pieces individually – zipping your files is heavily discouraged. Below are some guidelines to submitting your work:

  • If a project is a digital game or software application:  Detailed instructions for installation and interaction, including platform requirements, must be included. You will not be able to upload any game files, so please provide a link to your online game or downloadable game files, and include the link in your design statement.
  • If a project is a board game, performance, game event, or other physical project:   Include detailed documentation of the project, such as photographs, a short video, script, rules of play, etc.
  • If a project is a visual artwork or series:   Include detailed visual documentation of the project (3 – 5 images and/or up to 5 minutes of video).
  • If a project is a video:   You may upload the video directly to Slate or as well as a link to the video itself.  Be sure that the link does not require a special login.
  • If a project is a written paper or essay:   Please upload the paper itself in PDF format. Include at the start an abstract or summary of the essay.
  • If a project is a website or other online-accessible project:   A link to the online project is sufficient.
  • If your project does not fit into any of these categories  and you do not know how best to submit or document the project, contact the Game Center at [email protected] directly for advice.

If you have any questions about the application and/or creative portfolio, please email us at [email protected].
