Long and Short Essay on My Garden in English

My garden essay 1 (200 words).

My Garden is my favourite part of my house. I can spend hours in my garden without getting bored. It makes me come alive and I just love that feeling.

It is my mother who maintains the garden at our place just as she takes care of various other household chores. She is a huge nature lover and it was her idea to build a beautiful garden at home even though there isn’t a lot of space here. Most of the people in our neighbourhood have converted this place in their house into car parking area or have covered the place to build a small room. But my mother chose to convert this small piece of land into a lovely garden.

Our garden is full of colourful flowers. We have a row of roses on one side and a row of seasonal flowers on the other side. These flowers include marigold, petunia, pansy, hollyhock, aster, alyssum, hibiscus, sunflowers and lilies. It is extremely delightful to see these flowers blooming. My mother ensures that the plants get water and manure regularly so that they grow and bloom the way they should. I also help my mother with these activities.

I am thankful to my mother for giving me such a beautiful place to sit and rejoice nature.

My Garden Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

My garden is full of aromatic herbs. My grandfather loves gardening and I love helping him with this activity. We have grown numerous types of plants in our garden. Most of these are herbs such as aloe vera, basil, mint, coriander, curry plant and lemon grass. This helps in two ways. It adds to the beauty of the house and also provides natural herbs that offer so many health benefits.

My Morning Begins Here

My morning begins in my garden. As I wake up, the first thing I do is to head straight to my garden. It is the best way to begin my day. I just love the essence of this place. My grandfather is already seated on the small bench we have placed there. I go and sit right next to him. I practice deep breathing for around 15 minutes and then have a look at the various plants around the garden. The sight is extremely refreshing. I begin with my daily tasks only after spending around half an hour in my garden.

The Best Way to Spend My Evening

I often go out with my friends in the evening after my tuition classes. It gives me respite after a long day at school and coaching institute. We go to the nearby market to have some evening snacks and chit chat for a while before heading home. While I do look forward to this time every day, I love spending the evening hours in my garden all the more. Many a times, I call my friends to my place. We sit in the garden while my mother serves hot soup and snacks. For me, it is simply the best way to spend the evening hours.

My garden is an integral part of my life. This place can uplift my mood in fraction of seconds. I help my grandfather take care of my garden.

My Garden Essay 3 (400 words)

I just love nature. Hills, valleys, sunsets, sea, plants, trees and flowers – I love everything that is natural and organic. Every time we visit a hill station, I feel like staying there forever. It gets difficult for me to return as I feel so attached to the very essence of the places where nature can be seen in its pure, unadulterated form.

My Garden – My Idea

While I cannot bring along hills and valleys back home, I can certainly feel the enchanting smell of the flowers and plants by growing some at my place. As we were coming back from our trip to Assam, I was missing the lush green tea gardens and the beautiful flowers in the botanical garden there. It was like I had left my heart there. It was then that the idea of growing my own garden sprang in my mind. I spoke about it to my sister and she was equally thrilled.

Since we live in a flat, we did not have a proper area that could be turned into a garden. However, we could certainly fill one of our balconies with different types of flowers and feel their aroma fill in our house.

We spoke about the idea with our parents and they agreed to it on the condition that we will have to take care of the entire thing on our own.

Our Visit to the Nursery

On the weekend that followed, I and my sister visited the nearby nursery. There were numerous flowers out there and it was difficult to choose a few among them. It took almost 2 hours to choose the plants we wanted to get home. Among the flowering plants we choose rose, marigold, pansy and aster. Besides, we also brought home areca palm, spider plant, aloe vera, basil and asparagus. The nursery in-charge told us ways to take care of different plants so that they remain green for long.

We handpicked the plant pots. Most of them were white coloured plastic pots of the same size. We called home a gardener to place all the plants in the pots. Once this was done, we arranged the pots strategically so that the entire balcony was evenly covered with them. It looked beautiful.

We visit the nursery quite often to pick more plants to add to our collection. Seasonal flowers do not last long and we love picking different plants to fill their place.

I personally take care of each and every plant grown in my garden. Our balcony turned garden is extremely beautiful and we often receive compliments for the same from our neighbours and friends.

My Garden Essay 4 (500 words)

I always wanted to grow a garden at my place but it did not seem possible as we lived in a small flat in Delhi. There was a beautiful garden at my friend, Riya’s place and I wished we had one too every time I saw it. My prayers were soon heard and we shifted to my father’s home town, Chandigarh. The house here was big and there was enough space that could be turned into a garden.

Hiring a Professional Gardener

Luckily for me, my mother is as fond of plants and flowers as me. Thus, I did not have to convince her to grow a garden she too wanted to do it. After we got settled in the new place, we decided to shape the barren piece of land at our place into a garden. Since, the house had been vacant since years the soil in the garden was not good enough to grow grass and plants immediately.

So, my mother decided to hire a professional gardener. He worked on the soil for about a week during which he watered it regularly, used different tools to dig it and poured manure. Soon after, he planted grass and a few plants. We were delighted to see our little garden blooming.

Growing the Garden

I and my mother decided to visit the nursery to buy different plants for our garden. It was summer season and the nursery was blooming with pink and white lilies, colourful hibiscus, roses, pansies, sunflowers and bougainvillea. We loved them all and it was extremely difficult to choose among them. After mulling for over an hour, we finally choose a few saplings of hibiscus, bougainvillea, lilies and roses.

The saplings we brought were planted strategically in different parts of the garden. The bougainvillea being a climber was planted near the fence. Within a month it climbed the fence and spread over it. The beautiful bunches of pink flowers that grew on it were a visual treat. We decided to plant similar flowers together. So the roses were planted in one corner. A row of lilies was set close by and hibiscus plants were planted at the other corner of the garden. It all looked extremely beautiful. The plants soon found their roots in the garden and small buds began to spout. Each time I saw a bud, I got extremely thrilled. Our garden was soon blossoming with flowers. The sweet fragrance of the flowers filled our house.

It has been 3 years now and my garden is filled with a variety of flowers and leafy plants. We keep bringing different types of flowers from time to time. However, roses, lilies and bougainvillea can always be found in my garden. We have also added a row of basil. The aroma of basil is quite soothing. We also use it in our kitchen quite frequently.

We still have the same professional gardener who works with dedication and takes care of my garden very well.

It is quite amazing to have a garden at home. I am thankful that we shifted to a city like Chandigarh where I could have the luxury of growing a garden.

My Garden Essay 5 (600 words)

For me, a garden is an integral part of the house. This is because I have seen one at my place ever since I my childhood. I have learned to crawl, walk and eat in my garden. I have numerous fond memories attached to it and it forms an important part of my life. It is my grandmother who beautified this place. She has put immense efforts in growing the garden and maintaining it.

Benefits of Gardening:

  • The Gazebo in My Garden

Since we live on the outskirts of the city, we have the luxury of having a big house and quite a big garden. Besides the beautiful trees and flowers that form a part of my garden, there is a beautiful gazebo set up here that adds to its beauty. The gazebo is set in one corner of the garden and it is my favourite spot. My father chose its design and it is appreciated by all.

We host a lot of parties at home and the gazebo is a hot favourite spot of the guests. During the times, when the weather is pleasant, my parents usually plan barbeque in the garden and everyone just loves sitting in the Gazebo with their plate of snacks.

I also love spending some time during the evening hours at this quite place in my garden. Many a times, I also study here. I find it easier to concentrate here compared to other parts of my house.

  • Organic Vegetables and Fruits in My Garden

Besides beautiful rows of leafy plants and multi-hued flowers, my grandmother has also planted many vegetables in our garden. Spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, green chillies, carrots and eggplants are among some of the vegetables that grow in my garden. Herbs such as coriander, mint and curry plant have also been planted. All these vegetables grow in abundance in my garden and we often cut and cook them for our meals.

Apart from these, my garden also has quite a few fruit trees. Lemon tree, mango tree, banana tree and papaya tree have always been a part of it. They bear fruits and fill the air with their refreshing smell. Many a times, I have been made to climb the mango tree to pluck the mangoes. It is super fun and I always look forward to it.

Maintaining Garden is not Easy – a tough task

Though having a garden adds to the beauty of the house, it is quite a task to maintain it. Many people love the idea of growing plants and try their hands at it but give up in some time. This is because plants require utmost care. It is essential for you to take care of them on a daily basis in order to keep them fresh and green and help them grow.

Plants do not only require water but also need different types of manures to grow. Hats off to my grandmother who is so dedicated towards taking care of our garden even at this age. She makes sure the plants are watered twice a day and all the required manures are added from time to time. She also ensures that weeds and unwanted plants that hamper the growth of the other plants are removed timely.

We have hired a professional gardener who comes to our place thrice a week and takes care of our garden. My grandmother supervises him and gets the tasks done properly.

Some of the best memories of my childhood are attached to my garden. I love it when my entire family sits together in the garden to have their evening tea. I also love the winter afternoons when we have our lunch in the garden. It is simply amazing. Having a garden at home is blissful.

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Garden’ for Class 1, 2, and 3 Kids

10 lines on ‘my garden’ in english, short paragraph on ‘my garden’, long essay on ‘my garden’ in english for kids, what will your child learn from this essay.

Gardening is a fun hobby for children. It involves planting different types of plants and trees that bear fruits, vegetables, or flowers in a well-planned manner on a plot of land or in pots. It is an enriching activity that many families take up. Children are introduced to it by parents to help them understand the importance of learning how to grow a plant. Many children are familiar with gardening and will be confident while writing an essay on this topic. Those who haven’t engaged in gardening may get interested in the activity through this topic.

‘My Garden’ is a fairly advanced topic for young children. Here are some points to remember when composing an essay on the topic:

  • When writing about this topic, it is essential to talk about both the facts and how one feels about their garden.
  • Gardening can be done on the ground and in planters. Children who are exposed to gardening in planters can focus on the specifics of potted plants.
  • While writing short essays on your garden, stick to general points about gardening that are relatable.
  • When writing long essays, add facts about gardening and tell the story of your garden.

The easiest way to write about a garden is to break it down into small segments as one-liners. An essay for class 1 on gardens can include simple points about gardening. A class 2 essay can consist of more facts.

  • My garden is one of the most beautiful parts of my house. The different types of plants and flowers make it very decorative and attractive.
  • Gardening helps us learn about the cycle of life and how to nurture plants.
  • By growing plants in our house, we get fresh air during the day and it also makes our home look so pretty!
  • Gardening is the best way to develop a deep love and understanding of nature.
  • Many people grow good fruits and vegetables in their gardens. I prefer flowers as they are very pretty to look at.
  • Half of my garden is dedicated to flowering plants, and the remaining has vegetables and herbs planted by my grandmother.
  • The vegetables harvested from our garden taste fresh and better than what we buy from stores.
  • My flowering plants also attract plenty of birds, insects and butterflies.
  • My garden is a haven for these small animals, and I love watching them all day.
  • Gardens require regular maintenance, without which they die eventually.

Children used to gardening work will have no problem writing about it. For those who have little experience in it, this short essay will give them some ideas:

Gardening is my favourite hobby, and I think my garden is the best place in my house. I can spend many hours every day working in my garden, and being there makes me feel fresh and happy. I got interested in gardening because of my mother and grandmother. They grow many different types of herbs, fruits and vegetables, which we eat and enjoy. My interest in gardening grew after my mother encouraged me to plant carrot seeds in a small pot. After a few weeks of taking care of them by watering and adding manure, I could harvest some baby carrots. Ever since then, I have been totally hooked on gardening.

My garden is in a small plot of land in my backyard. We grow flowering plants closer to the building, where there is some shade and some sunlight. For the vegetables, we choose a spot with plenty of sunlight, which they require to grow big. I have to maintain the garden by watering it every day or else the leaves will fade. I like sitting in the garden and relaxing in the fresh scenery. When my friends come home, I show them all the new flowers and plants I have added.

Class 3 students are expected to write a long essay on gardening. Your child can start by arranging all the ideas appropriately and weaving them into an engaging narrative. Here is an example for a descriptive essay on ‘My Garden’ for children of class 3:

I have always loved nature and greenery in every place I visit. My parents often take me out of the city to experience the countryside and beautiful nature that makes me feel alive. My city life is busy, and my garden is the only escape to nature in the middle of all the concrete buildings. I feel lucky to have enough space in my house to grow a beautiful garden. My garden is in the patch of land right next to my window. Not just that, I have plants in pots all around our house, including the terrace!

There is a small patch of lawn in my garden for my family and friends to sit and enjoy a leisurely time. We have planted hedges on the sides of the walls that give the garden a beautiful look and feel. The hedges grow fast, so they need to be trimmed often. Over a dozen different types of flowering plants decorate the house all around. I have planted flowering varieties both in the ground and in the pots. The flowers attract birds and butterflies, and it is the best sight in the world.

My mother has planted various vegetables in the section of the garden that faces our kitchen. We love eating the fresh vegetables we harvest from the garden. Different seasons are suited for growing different vegetables, but we have cherry tomatoes all year round.

Since my window faces the garden, the plants and flowers are the first things I see every morning after I wake up. Whether I am studying or just relaxing, my garden is my place of peace and zen. All my friends like to come and sit in my garden because of how fresh it feels. Gardening is an activity I believe everyone should take up even if they don’t have much space in the house. They will be surprised at how well some plants can do in a simple pot!

Writing about gardening will teach your children how to write about a hobby they enjoy. Gardening is an activity that most children would be familiar with. However, some living in dense cities might not have been exposed to it. They might learn some new facts while thinking about gardening and get interested in trying their hand at it. The topic helps them ponder over the responsibility of tending a garden. It will also encourage them to observe the benefits of a garden and appreciate nature.

Essay on Garden

The gardens enhance both the outside and interior elegance of the property. They provide much-needed fresh air that is desperately needed in today's polluted world. The garden is regarded as the most attractive area of the home where one can unwind and relax away from the tiresome daily routine. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘Garden’.

100 Words Essay on Garden

200 words essay on garden, 500 words essay on garden.

Essay on Garden

The garden, in my opinion, is the ideal space in a home. It is a place where one can spend some time relaxing in the middle of nature and feeling rejuvenated. A magnificent and calming cacophony seems to be created by the oxygen present in the air, the sun streaming through the entire expanse of the open area, the lovely scent of the flowers, and the tweeting of birds. Nowadays, only a few homes are fortunate enough to have a garden. But if a person wishes to have a calm life, they should think about having a garden for their home.

My favourite area of my residence is the garden. I don't get bored spending hours in my garden. I just adore how it makes me feel alive. Along with taking care of several other domestic duties, my mom takes care of the garden at my house. Despite the limited space, she came up with the idea to create a lovely garden at home because she is a significant fan of nature. The majority of the residents in my neighbourhood have covered this section of their home to create a tiny room or transformed it into a car parking area. But my mom decided to create a wonderful garden on this small plot of land.

Our garden is bursting with vibrant colours and flowers. On one side, there is a row of daisies, and on the other, a row of seasonal flowers. These blooms include daisies, dandelions, tulips, roses, asters, jasmine, and sunflowers. The blooming of these flowers is quite beautiful. My mom makes sure the plants receive proper manure and watering so they may develop and blossom as they should. I also assist my mom with gardening tasks. I'm grateful that my mom gave me such a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the outdoors.

The ideal location in a house is a garden. Because the garden is the only place in every house where an individual can relax and have a sense of peace from a hectic lifestyle. Additionally, having a garden at home has numerous health advantages. A garden, for instance, contains many plants that produce oxygen.

Additionally, the flower's aroma helps lift one's spirits in the morning. Due to a lack of available area, individuals today are unable to construct gardens. Some people also believe that having a garden is wasting space. As a result, the house is no longer packed with gardens. A garden is essential for leading a tranquil life. Different plant species can be grown in gardens. The surroundings are enriched by these flowers' lovely scents, and they are the simplest to grow. The colours of these flowers also enhance the beauty of a garden. In addition, several vegetables can also be grown there and they also have a number of health advantages. This further guarantees the freshness and chemical-free status of the vegetables. You can walk on the green grass that grows around the garden space. As a result, it's the ideal location for any exercise. It also features a soft surface where kids can enjoy a variety of sports.

Maintaining a Garden

Everyone believes that planting flowers and trees is a simple undertaking. But only those who have a garden and those who do gardening are aware of how much work and effort it takes. Furthermore, plants require manure in addition to water. They also require regular attention to stay fresh and attractive. Even though many people pay professional gardeners to take care of their gardens, doing it ourselves is more enjoyable. You can better connect with the garden as a result.

Advantages of a Garden

The garden is the sole area of the house that can soothe the senses and make one feel physically and mentally well. A gazebo can be installed in the garden, where you can sit and take in the beauty of the space. In addition, having a garden at home allows you to cultivate organic fruits and vegetables. This product comes in a lot so that you can give some to your neighbours. Additionally, fruits and vegetables grown at home are tastier and healthier than those purchased from markets. The garden might contain flowering plants that release a pleasing fragrance to create a bright and fragrant atmosphere.

Planting a Garden

Simply visit the nursery to purchase seasonal plants each season; the majority of plants are changed each year as a result of climatic change. Place the plants in a logical order after purchasing them. Therefore, the garden appears more vibrant. It can be concluded that gardening is a highly positive and fruitful practice. It fosters a person's appreciation of nature and connection to the surrounding vegetation. Most people associate their fondest childhood experiences with the garden. Families gather in the garden for evening tea and conversation to strengthen their bonds. A garden is, by far, the most fantastic part of a home, regardless of the season.

The garden is surrounded by a fence to protect them from stray animals like dogs, cats, or cows. Usually, these fences are made of wood or bamboo.

The garden is designed into splits, the splits are the various parts. All the sections split into flower beds. While every bed is surrounded by an earthen uplift. For these flower crops, fruit trees, vegetables, and medicinal herbs, some parts are intended to be cared for.

In different seasons, people also plant seasonal vegetables. Pumpkin, gourd, lettuce, bitter gourd, garlic, tomato, potato, brinjal, bean, pea, cabbage, turnip, cauliflower, radish, carrots, chilies, and other vegetables. While, among fruit trees apples, chikoos, oranges, plums, etc. In addition to this people also grows climbers and creepers to decorate their garden. How to Take Care of Plants Essay

People root the grasses, prepare the beds, sow the seeds, plant the trees, and water the crops on a routine basis. People work in their gardens both during the morning and evening, they keep their garden neat and tidy.

We must love and nurture the gardens as well. We must keep in mind to take care of the insect crops in the garden. For these crops, insects can be dangerous. On the crops, flowers, and fruit crops, insects lay eggs, thus we need to sprinkle insecticides that can destroy these eggs. FAQs on Essay on Gardening

1. Define a Botanical Garden?

Botanical Garden is a garden which is dedicated to collection, cultivation and they are displayed in a wide range of plants which are labelled with their botanical names.

A botanical garden is also known as the botanic garden, this is a collection of living plants that are designed chiefly to illustrate the relationships which exist among the plant groups. The botanical garden is a type of display garden that concentrates on woody plants like shrubs and trees. Botanical Garden acts as a germplasm collection and helps the development of new hybrids.

2.What Type of Plants is Best for the Garden?

Different types of vegetables which we like to eat are the best plants to grow in the garden. Plant head lettuce, a lettuce cutting mix, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots are a good start to this. Most of the plants need space and if you don't let them have their own little piece of territory, there may be hell to pay. You should be realistic with your garden plant ideas by starting simply with a piece of paper, a tape measure, and a ruler to measure up the size of your plot.

3.How can I Design my Garden?

We can give a shape to our garden lawn, we can plan our planting, the paving can be done beautifully in order of distinct levels. Gardening is not very tough, but also not too easy. It needs a perfect combination of hard work and knowledge. The hard work is that you need to do, no one can help you with that. Knowledge is something that can be gained by reading books, blogs, and watching videos. You can start by learning the sunlight and wind exposure of your place, as well as your soil structure and health. You need to decide how you want to use the space within the limits discovered above, and be sure to do some reading on the different flower bed styles and about how you can design them.

Why Gardening Is So Good for You

Digging holes can be a workout and mood booster all rolled into one.

A hand holds a container with two small plants. Pink flowers fill the background.

By Dana G. Smith

Dana Smith reported this story from Plant Hardiness Zone 8a.

Last Saturday, I was covered in dirt, my back ached, the scream of a trillion cicadas rang in my ears, and, despite my best efforts, a sunburn was developing on the back of my neck.

I was in heaven.

Over the course of the day, I planted my summer haul of annuals (a riot of reds, purples and yellows), transplanted some fall-blooming mums and pulled a Montauk daisy that had grown too big for the space. A neighbor took the daisy off my hands, and in return gifted me some iris and lamb’s ear that he needed to thin out of his yard.

For me, gardening is a workout, meditation and opportunity to socialize with my neighbors all rolled into one. And while I’m admittedly biased, research backs up some of my observations that gardening can have real benefits for your mind and body .

Gardening gets you moving.

Shoveling mulch, pulling weeds and lugging around a watering can all qualify as moderate-intensity physical activities . And gardeners tend to report higher levels of physical activity overall, compared with non-gardeners.

In one recent study conducted in Colorado, for example, people who joined a community garden logged nearly six extra minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity compared with people who were on the waiting list for a plot. That may not sound like a lot, but it added up to about 42 extra minutes per week, said Jill Litt, a professor of environmental health at the University of Colorado at Boulder, who ran the trial.

“That’s almost 30 percent of the way to meeting the federal recommendations” of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, Dr. Litt said. “People talk about it as a way to meet these goals and be more active but not having to get on a treadmill.”

There is also some evidence that gardeners, possibly because of this increased activity, have better cardio-metabolic health. One study of older adults found that, compared with those who don’t exercise, people who gardened as one of their main physical activities had lower rates of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Some of the more vigorous gardening activities, like digging, raking and hauling bags of potting soil, can also serve as a strength workout, challenging muscles in the arms, legs and core.

Not every study shows physical health benefits from gardening, though, especially when the activities are lower intensity or done for just 10 or 15 minutes at a time. It’s also possible that people who choose gardening as a hobby are healthier and more active than non-gardeners even before they dig in.

Gardening does wonders for your mental well-being.

Some studies report that working in a garden lowers people’s scores on anxiety and depression measures; other research has found increased confidence and self-esteem among gardeners. In one small study , spending 30 minutes gardening lowered levels of the stress hormone cortisol .

Experts think there are a few possible ways gardening improves mental health. First, physical activity itself is a well-established way to boost mood.

Many people also report feeling a sense of meaning and purpose when they garden, which is an important contributor to well-being .

“Working with plants, people kind of see where they fit in the world,” said Emilee Weaver, the program manager of therapeutic horticulture at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. “They see why they’re valuable because of the cause-and-effect relationship that plants so visibly articulate.”

In addition, gardening, especially in community or allotment gardens, can help people build social connections and combat loneliness . In the Colorado study, participants talked about the relationships they developed and said they felt more bonded to their community through gardening.

“They’re fostering social connection. They’re getting more involved,” Dr. Litt said. “They talk about sense of belonging. They talk about shared learning. All of these processes are really important for mental health.”

If you garden at home, putting a bed in the front yard instead of the back could similarly spur conversation and bring together neighbors, she added.

It’s possible that the act of getting your hands dirty could have a positive effect on your mood, as well. There is some research to suggest that bacteria in soil can alter the microbiome in a way that reduces stress and inflammation.

If playing in the dirt isn’t your thing, just being outdoors in a natural environment can provide stress relief and help people recover from mental fatigue, said Carly Wood, a senior lecturer in sport and exercise science at the University of Essex in England, who researches the mental health benefits of nature-based interventions, including gardening .

That may be because being in nature activates the mind and senses in a way that takes your attention off other things. “Natural environments are fascinating,” Dr. Wood said. “All their features inherently engage us and kind of distract us, in a way, from our stressors.”

And you don’t need to spend all day outdoors to reap the benefits, she said. “Five minutes is enough to improve your self-esteem and your mood.”

Why gardening can grow your mental well-being and cultivate friends

Research has found that gardening in the front yard, where the fruits of your labor are more visible, may foster social connections and better mental health.

my home garden english essay

Looking for a simple change that can improve your physical, mental and emotional health? Try gardening.

People garden indoors and out, in different weather and climes and with different intensities and goals. Research consistently shows that gardening has a positive effect on mental health and well-being. And emerging research suggests that gardening may also be a way into healthy behavioral changes writ large.

Why is gardening such a healthy pursuit? Research suggests that there are two main pathways that lead gardeners to mental well-being. One is through the connection with nature and its aesthetic beauty. But another, perhaps surprisingly, is how gardening can also be a way for us to connect with other people.

“I feel like it’s just about bringing the pieces back together of what makes us human,” said Jonathan Kingsley , senior lecturer of health promotion at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia.

Why people enjoy gardening

Gardening can be a rich, multisensory experience, and gardeners typically cite the gardens as a source of pleasure and joy , escape or curiosity and learning.

“It’s the taste, the texture, the sensation … wind on your face and your hair, just feeling the elements of nature. And it helps people feel alive, awakening in some way,” said Jill Litt , a senior researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health. “These are things that are very therapeutic.”

Recent research suggests that the smells of nature may impact well-being, and nature sounds such as birdsong also boost mental health.

Like other nature-based activities, gardening may derive some of its benefits from reducing stress . The attention restoration theory hypothesizes that natural stimuli may decrease mental fatigue by gently holding our attention with “ soft fascination .”

But one trait that makes gardening stand out is that it “requires active participation” and “getting the hands in the dirt,” said Litt, who is also a professor of environmental studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. “You have to do something.”

With weeding, watering, digging, sowing, pruning and other such horticultural duties, gardening can be a physically demanding hobby. And physical exercise has also been shown to improve mental health.

Growing greens and cultivating connections

Gardening may not only help connect us to nature, but with other humans. Community gardening in a shared space can build trust, as people look after one another’s plots of land, and offer help and advice. This social growth is slow and steady, grounded by a shared purpose, a sense of belonging and learning. “All of it’s textbook on how you build strong relationships,” Litt said. And the “garden calls them to come back, because they have a responsibility.”

But even gardening at home is linked to greater social connectedness. In earlier research , Litt and her colleagues found that home gardeners were more socially involved — more likely to communicate with local elected officials or participate in parent-teacher associations, for example — than non-gardeners.

Home gardeners were also more likely to positively rate the aesthetics of their neighborhood. Both the increased social involvement and aesthetics ratings were associated with better health. Participating in community gardening further enhanced these effects.

Other research has found that gardening in the front yard, where the fruits of your labor are more visible, may also foster social connections and better mental health, said Lauriane Suyin Chalmin-Pui , an independent researcher in Britain specializing in the influence of gardening on well-being.

In one study , Chalmin-Pui and her colleagues transformed 38 bare front yards into gardens for 42 participants. Three months later, the study participants reported lower stress and had healthier cortisol patterns.

The gardens provided more opportunities for participants to bump into their neighbors, and the plants provided an easy conversation starter. When Chalmin-Pui followed up with the participants after a year and a half, she found that people had gotten to know their neighbors.

Some had lived on the same street for 10 years. “But it was only after they both got plants in their front yard that they actually struck up a conversation,” Chalmin-Pui said.

Chalmin-Pui recalled another study participant who was dealing with mental health issues and physical disability. The woman told her that the plants were a “lifesaver” and that “it was the first time that she had felt human in years.”

“She felt that she was keeping them alive,” Chalmin-Pui said. “And the fact that she was keeping them alive meant that she was capable of doing something.”

Gardening as a way to lasting behavioral change

Many of the studies investigating the health benefits of gardening are observational and correlational, so it is difficult to know whether it was the gardening that caused the health changes or whether certain types of people who already had these health behaviors were more drawn to gardening.

In the first randomized controlled trial testing the effect of community gardening on health, Litt and her colleagues worked with 37 community gardens in the Denver and Aurora, Colo., area to more directly test how gardening impacts health. For the study, 291 participants who had not gardened within the past two years were randomly selected to receive a community garden plot or remain on the waitlist.

Compared to waitlisted participants, those who gardened had increased moderate to vigorous physical activity — on average, 40.6 minutes more per week. They also consumed more fiber — about 1.4 grams of roughage each day. After one season of gardening, they also reported lower levels of stress and anxiety.

Though the size of behavioral change was modest, it was a tangible start in line with other health behavior interventions. “We see gardens as an agent of health behavior change,” Litt said.

After the data collection ended, the waitlist participants were also given a garden plot, and over half started gardening the following season, Litt said.

How much gardening do you need?

Researchers are still digging up the details on what “dose” of gardening reaps the most mental health benefit.

In a study published last year surveying 4,919 middle-aged and older adults in Australia, Kingsley and his colleagues reported that gardening for at least 2.5 hours each week was associated with better self-reported mental well-being and life satisfaction. These benefits were stronger for adults 64 and older.

The time in your garden oasis is “competing against other forces that are impacting your mental health every day,” Kingsley said. Though the study was correlational, Kingsley theorizes that 2.5 hours per week in the garden may be a sweet spot to meet that threshold.

For beginners, you can start small. Just a few potted plants indoors is still gardening. Some plants, like mint, are vigorous growers and may be easier for beginner gardeners to keep alive. But growing plants you personally enjoy is probably key, Chalmin-Pui said.

And don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty and make mistakes.

Gardening is “a kind of trial and error and just experience thing, which is life,” Kingsley said. “You’ll have lots of failures and wins in this. And that’s just what life is.”

Our lawn in front of the house has a little garden. In that garden , my mother is growing her own kitchen garden. She is passionate about it and brings different seeds every month to grow them out and use them in our food.

The fondest memories I have in a place is my terrace. Our terrace is huge with many plants. I remember all the good times we have spent there as a family. Moreover, we play there a lot when my cousins come over. Thus, every nook and corner of my home is special to me.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

my home garden english essay

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

my home garden english essay

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

my home garden english essay

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

my home garden english essay

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

my home garden english essay

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

my home garden english essay

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

my home garden english essay

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
