Why do we say "Manners make the man / Manners maketh man"?

Well-known expressions, manners make the man / manners maketh man.

Today this expression broadly means that your mannerisms and characteristics make you who you are, that is to say people are judged by their manners and conduct. But in its earliest use, as manners maketh man , it likely had a broader meaning--that manners make us human - that politeness and etiquette are what prevent us from falling into savagery.

Background:

The Random House Dictionary of America's Popular Proverbs and Sayings traces manners maketh man to the middle of the 14th century but without citing a specific reference. The earliest reference BookBrowse could find was in the work of William Horman who was headmaster of Eton and then Winchester in the late 15th century. Winchester College still retains "manners makyth man" as its motto, as does New College, Oxford, both of which were founded by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, in the 14th century. The Vulgaria , a Latin textbook published in 1519, is considered the most important of Horman's surviving works. It is a collection of English phrases with their Latin translations with a strong leaning towards topics such as manners, religion and natural history. Vulgar is Latin for "common" or "pertaining to the common/ordinary people." Thus vulgaria essentially translates as "common things" or "everyday sayings", as such it's safe to assume that most if not all of the expressions in the book were in common use at the time. In addition to being an early record of the expression "manners maketh man", Horman's Vulgaria contains the earliest known reference to "necessity is the mother of invention," ( mater artium necessitas ).

Manners Maketh A Man

Manners maketh a man is a very commonly heard saying in every culture found in world over. Manners form the basis for every person’s name and status in the society. When elders dislike any person the very first sentence begins as “He is a very well mannered person”. Manners play a very important role and play a major part of the person’s outlook. The manner does not only mean the respect one gives to elders but also respect towards both people of similar and younger age. Manners should be inculcated right from the time a person is a child. This helps them to respect others throughout their life. Apart from respecting elders it also is in reference to ladies, children, and every part and parcel of the society.

It is a very common phrase-“Ladies First”, where the ladies are given the privilege to be first. And in the case of children, their thoughts and views are listened to and analyzed. Manners and respect are a must if someone wants to go ahead in his or her life. When properly followed manners help a person to gain respect and trust in his society. Manners are the critical steps in the ladder to success which guarantees an individual to reach a high position in life. It also brings a sense of gratitude and well-being in an individual and gives them a chance to express themselves.

An important part of social etiquette can be seen at workplaces, as one tends to spend a lot of time at work. With workplaces becoming global, the office environment is becoming more and more diverse and less formal. Unfortunately, the fallout of this has been that common courtesies like politeness and good manners have taken a back seat. They are deemed less and less important in our professional as well as personal lives. The workplaces of today are competitive and conflict-ridden, often giving rise to strong emotions. Is it any wonder then that traditional niceties and formalities have given way to contracted greetings and electronic wishes? Writing letters or thank you notes have become passé, unheard of almost. Manners at the workplace are essential to retaining the dignity and the professionalism in the organization. The concept of civility encompasses social manners, personal grooming and dressing, communicating right, cell phone etiquette, and of course good manners. Good manners help in building cordial relationships and provide for a healthy environment at work. The onus of maintaining civility at the workplace is on the employees, who need to observe a certain code of conduct. While introducing a person or addressing somebody using the appropriate title like Mr.  Mrs. or Miss makes a lot of difference. Saying ‘thank you’ or ‘sorry’ might go a long way in building relationships as does a smile. Such gestures are always appreciated. Do not gossip or talk ill of others at the workplace. Your workplace is not the right place to flirt or find a date. If you are in the wrong accept it graciously and do apologize. Don’t criticize others’ work or ideas in public . Never make lewd comments or use nasty expressions while talking. Always be neatly and formally attired for the workplace. Such professional etiquette will only help one become a successful individual in life and society.

Being courteous to others will earn you respect and courtesy in return and shows that you have had a good upbringing. Manners help recognize an individual as a person of class earning one respect and awe of others in the society. Thus the term or phrase “manners maketh a man” is apt in every sense.

Essay No. 04

In the 14th century, there lived in England in the reigns of Edward III and Richard II, a wise and able churchman, William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester. He was not only a statesman, being Chancellor of England three times, but a great patron of learning, and he founded a great school at Winchester and a college, which he called the New College, at Oxford. To both the school and the college he gave the same motto – “Manners Maketh Man”.

Now in modern English, the word manners’ means outward behavior. Of one who knows and observes the etiquette of good society and behaves politely, we say ‘he has good manners’; while one who is rude and rough and clownish in his behavior, is said to have bad manners. In this sense we might say that manners make a gentleman; for gentlemanliness, in the ordinary meaning of the word, consists largely incorrect, courteous, and considerate behaviour towards others. But mere politeness scarcely makes a man; for many, a so-called ‘gentleman’ is at heart selfish and mean, cowardly and weak. What, then, did Bishop Wykeham mean when he said, “Manners maketh the man?’

In his days, the word ‘manners’ had a much deeper meaning than it has today. It did not denote merely polite behaviour, but what we should call good moral conduct or morality. And the old Bishop means that it is good moral conduct based on sound moral principles that made boys and men, men. This shows that the founder of Winchester School and New College, Oxford, did not regard education as merely mental training and the acquisition of knowledge, but especially as moral training. He wanted his school and his college to produce true men good, honest, fearless, God-fearing men.

In other words, he recognized that the only thing that really mattered in life was character. Wealth, rank, fine clothes, polite manners, learning-none of these things alone or together can make a man; it is the only character that can do that. A man of character, however poor, low-born, or ignorant he may be, is more of a man than millionaires, princes, and scholars of no character.

Etiquette in early modern england (part 1).

Royal, military and court costumes of the time of James I. Folger Shakespeare Library. ART Vol. c91, no. 8c

“Manners maketh man” was the motto of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. More than simply the social niceties, as portrayed (and sometimes mocked) in the period’s satiric comedies, courtesy and civility were the very glue that held society together. They were, as scholar Anna Bryson notes, “central to Tudor and Stuart assumptions and fears about the social and political order.”

In Days of Yore

Manners, however, did not suddenly spring to life in the Renaissance. In the Middle Ages, it was knightly virtue that set the chivalrous standards for comportment. Because eating and drinking were central to medieval social life, many of these dicta took the form of poems designed to teach table manners. Presented as easy-to-remember rhymes, these rules became part of an oral tradition in days when books were scarce and expensive and literacy was low.

Writings from this time often pass along the common wisdom, as in this excerpt from a popular thirteenth-century poem about table manners for boys:

With soup, do not use bread to sop it up, Or suck it loudly – that is to transgress, Or put your dirty mouth to a clean cup, Or pass drinks while your hands are in a mess, Or stain your napkin out of carelessness. Also, beware at meals of causing strife, And do not make a tooth-pick of your knife.

For adults, guidelines frequently drew contrasts between the feudal lords of the court and the lower classes. “A man of refinement should not slurp with his spoon when in company,” admonishes one author of a book on manners, while another warms, “If a man wipes his nose on his hand at table because he knows no better, then he is a fool, believe me.” Others frowned upon putting a gnawed bone back in the dish (“this is a serious offense”), blowing your nose on the tablecloth, “fall[ing] upon the dishes like swine,” or putting your fingers in the salt or mustard.

A New Order

Such rules set the expectations for behavior in Medieval courts, but whether such advice “took” among the lower strata of society was not a big concern. According to historian Norbert Elias, “[People in the Middle Ages] were told, do this and not that; but by and large a great deal was let pass.” In the Renaissance, however, things changed. “Individuals of different social origins are thrown together,” with the result that a new social order was created. In this new hierarchy, behavior among the upper class was still looked to as exemplary, but enforcement relied more on peer pressure than on a set of proscribed rules. “People forced to live with one another in a new way become more sensitive to the impulses of others,” writes Elias about life at court and in cities, “[and] the degree of consideration expected of others becomes greater.”

The social imperative not to offend informed much of the writing on manners during this period. Probably the most seminal of these was a 1530 work by Erasmus, De civilitate morum puerilium (On Civility in Children) , which became a veritable bestseller. Straddling the Middle Ages and the early modern era, Erasmus drew on traditional concepts of courtesy from prior works, but he also included keen observations on the social transitions of his time. He laid out a new standard in De civilitate , which is dedicated to a young prince: “Let others paint lions, eagles, and other creatures on their coats of arms. More true nobility is possessed by those who can inscribe on their shields all that they have achieved through the cultivations of the arts and sciences.”

Down and Dirty

Despite his elevated tone, Erasmus did not neglect the nitty-gritty business of manners. Concern with bodily propriety loomed large and he and his contemporaries did not shrink from addressing matters which today are seldom discussed outside commercials for digestive aids. He cautioned, for example, against moving about in your chair while sitting at the table, “lyke a man that letteth a blast or is about it.” Even Erasmus bowed to nature, however, noting that “it is not pleasing, while striving to appear urbane, to contract an illness.” Should the necessity arise, he advised either withdrawing or, if that was not possible, to “let a cough hide the explosive sound.” “Replace farts with coughs,” was his final word on the subject.

Manners Maketh a Man

Expansion of an idea: manners maketh a man.

God created man in(to) his own image. But all human beings are not human beings, There is something we call social ethics. How to live in society amongst our fellow beings, particularly in our society’, is an art learnt by practice. Manners are at the root of a good and refined social behaviour. It is not learning that makes one a good social being, it is education that make the complete man.

A learned man is not necessarily an educational man. Education implies nobility, humility and Good manners mean good social being.

There is a story of Diogenes who was know for his canine (doggist) temperament. Oneday Alexander the Great went to see him because he wanted his advice on some urgent matter. The philosopher, a great learned man was sitting in a tub of water basking in the sun. When the Emperor had stood there for quite a long time, the Emperer said can I do anything tor you sir”. The philosopher after a pause said, “get away and don’t obstruct the light ot the sun” again he was silent.

From this we can guess that Diogenes was not a cultured person in spite of all his learning.

Manners in a man to be cultured, polite, tolerating and mannerly letters need to be added to man to make a complete man-manners.

Essay on Importance of Good Manners

How a person behaves towards the other can be termed ‘manner’. Manners play an important part in everyone’s life. Someone’s manners can tell us so many things about that person, like their background, their education etc. But ‘Manner’ is a general term, that is to say, it does not necessarily mean that manners are always good, though they always should be good, if not cultivated properly they can be bad, which is generally termed as ‘bad – Manners’. And therefore, manners, that is to say, ‘Good Manners’ are cultivated in every child from childhood.

The learning of manners starts from the home since parents are the first teacher of the child, the parents also become the first to teach manners to the child. But one thing to understand here is that the mind of a human is receptive, and hence we, the human, receive or rather learn and grasp so many things that happen in our surroundings. And this surrounding also up to an extent plays a role in the cultivation of manners in the child.

Hence, good surroundings cultivate good manners and vice-versa.

Afterwards, the parents and the surrounding school and teachers play an important part in teaching good manners to the students. For instance, the students must greet the teacher good morning, or good afternoon (according to the time) whenever the teacher enters the classroom, also the use of phrases such as “may I come in” and “may I go” are taught to be used in the school. And these phrases remain with the students for the rest of their life.

Understanding Good Manners

The one thing to understand here is that good manners are not formalities, neither are they social protocol or the rules, which one has to follow to avoid the fine. But it is something that comes from the inside most naturally and by itself, it is something that should not be forced or faked. The way in which we want others to behave with us is also how they want us to behave to them, it can be the simplest way to understand good manners.

People with good manners are liked by everyone, while on the other hand, those who do not possess good manners are more often than not despised by others. It does not matter how wealthy one is, how well educated one is, or how great marks one managed to score, if the person does not possess good manners people are not going to admire him. But if the person knows how to act and behave with others, then everyone likes that person. Also, good manners turn into good nature, and a person who has a good nature is liked by everyone.

Writing an Essay on the Importance of Good Manners

As discussed, good manners are important in life, writing about the same helps it in a better manner. And hence students are required to write an essay on the importance of good manners. Because for writing an essay students have to think about it, and therefore it also in a way allows the students to check their manners.

But one thing is also important which is, essay writing should be good, and hence Vedantu provides the essay on the “importance of good manners” for free to guide the students in writing the same.

From our childhood, good manners have been cultivated as a major part of every being's life. Being a human it plays an important role in every one day to day life. Good Manners Essay

Good manners are the surest way to be a likable person, and good manners can be acquired at any age. The important thing is to have a strong will to change bad manners into good manners, because good morals are good behavior that you do in all your dealings.

We learn good manners from a young age, where our parents implant these morals in us, then our culture increases little by little, and we learn a lot of customs and traditions, and we choose from them what suits our beliefs, and we leave strange habits that are not in line with our beliefs and culture.

Good manners

There is no doubt that when a child is born, he does not perceive anything, as he is like a blank page. Then he acquires morals from his family because they are the ones surrounding him. The child watches, listens and watches everything that happens around him, and imitates what he sees from the behavior of his parents and siblings.

From this it becomes clear that the family is the first to teach the child morals, and it may teach him good manners, or teach him bad manners.

Therefore, when parents complain that their children have bad behavior, the reason for this is the behavior of adults themselves. If adults adjust their behavior for the better, they will find that their children’s behavior will also improve.

Good manners are what distinguishes man from other creatures

There is no doubt that good manners are what distinguishes man from other creatures, so we call a person who does not have good morals the word (monster).

One of the most important qualities that characterizes a person is compassion. Compassion is a commendable character that we must practice in all circumstances, whether in our normal daily lives, or in a state of war. Compassion is a great human behavior.

There is no doubt that man is a social being, who needs to be an acceptable person in his society, and this will only happen if he is of good manners, and he can deal with others with respect and appreciation.

One of the most important benefits that accrue to the individual when his morals are good, is that he is not subjected to punishment, because a person with good morals will not commit any crimes, and will not violate the laws.

Good manners and change our behavior for the better

Although we acquire most of our behavior in the early stages of our life, behavior is subject to change, and this is a great characteristic. Where a person can correct his bad behavior, and acquire a good manner.

The acquisition of good manners does not depend on age or place,  you can acquire new characteristics, and get yourself used to them at any age.

Every day man learns new things, his culture increases and his thinking changes. All this makes it easy to change his behavior and acquire good morals that he did not have before.

Change is the norm of life, so you should not be a static person that does not change with circumstances. Of course, there are fixed principles that must be adhered to, but we can change behavior for the better, in a way that does not conflict with values and beliefs.

Gain good manners

  • The best way to acquire good manners is to follow the heavenly religions, because all religions call for good morals and spread goodness among people, and forbid harming others, whether by word or deed.
  • The family and the school are responsible for raising children, instilling good manners in them, and making them good people in order to benefit themselves and their society.
  • The state should also work to spread good manners through various media, such as television, books, magazines, and artistic works such as series, films, and others.
  • Also, some social media has become a dangerous role in spreading bad morals, and therefore there must be monitoring of it by the government, and the development of laws regulating it.

At the end of the good manners essay we have explained the importance of good manners for both the individual and society, and how we can make them more prevalent in our society, and there is no doubt that the development of a society and its advancement depends on the behavior of its citizens, and their good morals.
