University Of Kerala Begins Application For PhD Entrance Examination

University of kerala phd admission: the registration for phd entrance examination will end on november 17. the university will conduct the admission test on december 4..

The University of Kerala has started the online application for PhD entrance examination from today, November 3. The registration for PhD entrance examination will end on November 17. The university will conduct the admission test on December 4.

Candidates applying for PhD Entrance Examination must have a Masters degree or a Professional degree recognized as equivalent to the Masters degree of the University of Kerala.

Students with UGC-NET, JRE, UGC.CSIR-NET/JRE, SLET recognized by UGC and GATE research fellowships of Central and State Government Departments/agencies are exempted from appearing in the PhD entrance examination. Also MPhil /PhD Degree and teacher fellowship holders are exempted from taking the test. However, candidates who have qualified M.Phil. in subjects other than the subjects in which he/she seeks registration for Ph.D. would be required to qualify the Entrance Test.

Register with names, mobile numbers and email ids
Login again with the system generated credentials
Fill the Kerala University PhD application form
Upload documents including educational certificates
Save the application form for reference

The Kerala University PhD entrance tets will be of three hours duration and will carry a maximum of 100 marks. While 50 per cent of the syllabus will be Research Methodology, the remaining 50 per cent will be from subject chosen.

Kerala School of Mathematics

Kerala School of Mathematics has many core research groups and provides excellent opportunities for pursuing research in these areas. The PhD programme at Kerala School of Mathematics is a perfect platform to explore these areas in depth. Students will be selected through the examinations listed below, followed by an interview at Kerala School of Mathematics.

Eligibility

Minimum second-class or equivalent grade in the qualifying degree. A qualifying degree could be one of the following

Master’s degree in the Mathematical or Physical Sciences,
B.E./B.Tech. (or equivalent degree) in an appropriate field of Engineering or Technology.

Qualifying examinations

The candidate should also have passed one of the following entrance tests:

Qualified in the Doctoral scholarship conducted by NBHM
CSIR-UGC NET for JRF.

Candidates who have passed one of the above exams or hold any external PhD fellowship are eligible to apply. Candidates who are yet to complete their examinations for the qualifying degree and expect to complete all the requirements for their degree before the last date for applying the course are eligible to apply. For such candidates, the admission, if offered, will be subject to the completion of the qualifying degree.

Application Process

Interested and eligible candidates should write to [email protected] with their résumé and a scanned copy of the CSIR-UGC/NBHM letter offering their fellowship or a copy of the hall ticket (in the case the offer letter has not been received yet). The last date for submitting the application form will be published in the notification. All shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview. The PhD offer will be based on the performance of the candidate in the interview.

All students admitted to the PhD program will have to complete a credit requirement of 24 credits (typically six courses) in their first year PhD coursework. The coursework will be demanding and will lay the foundation for the PhD scholar in approaching the research problem thereafter.

Integrated Ph.D. Programme

Integrated Ph.D. Programme is a research programme. At the end of the successful completion, Master of Science and Ph.D. degree are awarded.

The first three semesters will consist of core and elective courses specialized in one subject (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics). The fourth semester will consist of advanced courses and project work. After the successful completion of comprehensive and project work, the student will continue with research leading to the Ph.D. degree.

Eligibility

A Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences/Chemical Sciences/ Mathematical Sciences/ Physical Sciences/ Engineering/ Technology and related areas as applicable to individual Schools, under the 10+2+3/4 system.
Candidates admitted to School of Physics must have a valid score in Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) .
The minimum requirement for admission to the programme is 55% marks or 6.0 out of 10 CGPA in the Bachelor's degree (as declared by the University).
Relaxation of eligibility criteria for SC/ST and PD applicants will be made according to Government of India rules.

Selection procedure

Short-listed candidates who have applied for School of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics will be called for a written test and those short-listed in the written test will appear for interview(s). In the School of Physics, candidates with a valid JEST scorecard will be called for the interview

Duration of the Programme

The maximum duration of the Integrated Ph.D. programme is 14 semesters.

The students will be awarded Institute scholarship of Rs. 10,000/- per month until the successful completion of the coursework and comprehensive examination provided the student maintains a minimum AGPA (annual grade point average) of 6.5.

After clearing the comprehensive examination the studentship will be made equivalent to that of UGC-CSIR JRF/SRF excluding the contingency grant and HRA. The studentship will be paid for a maximum of 14 semesters (including 4 semesters of course work) for each student provided (s)he is in good academic standing.

Fellowship stands automatically terminated at the end of 14 semesters for which the student registered. Fees

Prospective students satisfying the eligibility criteria are encouraged to acquaint themselves with the research areas of our faculty members for a suitable match of interest. DUK offers Ph.D scholarships and fee waivers for the students selected for the full-time regular Ph.D program. DUK offers an attractive option for professionals with experience to carry out their doctoral studies while working in the industry or an academic institution through the industry regular and the part-time regular Ph.D programs respectively.

Total Credits for the PhD program will be 300.
All PhD students will have following mandatory PhD level courses to be completed within the first 2 years of their doctoral study: ◦ Research Methods and Ethics 3 credits ◦ Technical Writing 1 credits ◦ Pedagogy Design 2 credits ◦ Design Thinking and Translational Research 2 credits
Remaining credit requirements for coursework shall be decided by the student in consultation with the doctoral committee.
Part-time PhD students can complete up to 15 credits during their mandatory on-campus visits.

Minimum eligibility requirement

For the General category candidates, a 2-year (or more) Master’s degree with 60% marks or an M.Phil degree with 60% coursework marks in a discipline relevant to the school in which the candidate is applying is required.
SC/ST/OEC/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled/Economically weaker section candidates have the same criteria as the General category candidates, except that they need to have only 55% marks.
The candidates who have appeared for the final examinations are also eligible to apply if their aggregate marks until then are equal to or above the minimum required marks. If admitted to the Ph.D. program, they have to meet the full eligibility criteria within a date specified by the University.
Part-time and Industry Regular Ph.D applicants are additionally required to have a full-time job with at least 5 years of relevant full-time work experience, after their Bachelor’s degree. To apply to the Industry Regular Ph.D program, the applicant should be a full time employee of the industry at the time of application.
The mentor identified by an Industry Regular Ph.D applicant needs to provide a letter describing how the chosen industry research lab is sufficiently equipped to conduct the required research.

Additional school-wise eligibility requirements

Interested candidates need to apply online through DUK’s Ph.D application portal and upload all the required documents. If a candidate wishes to apply to more than one school or type of Ph.D program, he/she has to register separately and apply separately for each. The fee per application is Rs. 1500/-. There is no application fee for SC/ST and differently-abled candidates.

A candidate needs to be JRF qualified in the relevant discipline or should qualify the Digital University Research Aptitude Test (DRAT) to be shortlisted for the Ph.D interview.

DRAT has two parts: DRAT-Common (DRAT-C) that is common to all the applicants and DRAT–Subject (DRAT-S) that will be school/research area specific.

DRAT will be conducted as an online AI and human proctored test. The candidates can take the test from their homes. The candidates need not travel to any specific test centers to take the test. DRAT-C shall contain questions on English comprehension, quantitative aptitude, research aptitude and analytical aptitude.

The marks distribution for DRAT-Common will be as follows:
English comprehension (5 marks),
Quantitative Aptitude (10 marks),
Research aptitude (10 marks)
Analytical aptitude (10 marks).

The candidates will be tested for their knowledge in the subjects and the research areas of interest of the individual schools in the DRAT-S part. Candidates will be shortlisted for an interview/viva-voce based on their JRF qualification or the DRAT score. To be considered for the interview, candidates need to obtain at least 50% marks(35 out of total 70 marks) in DRAT (45% or 31.5 marks for SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/Differently-abled). The shortlisted candidates are required to send one letter of recommendation and a Statement of Purpose (SOP). During the interview/viva-voce, the candidates are required to give a presentation that includes

(a) A brief self-introduction.

(b) A discussion of their research interests and proposed area of research. Alternatively they can present a research proposal.

(c) A presentation of a recent journal or conference paper (published in 2018 or later).The paper has to be selected from a journal/conference contained in the list provided by the schools to their shortlisted candidates. The schools will not share any research paper with the candidates.

The interview/viva-voce shall assess whether

(a) The candidate possesses the competence to work in the proposed research area.

(b) The research work can be suitably undertaken at DUK.

The list of selected candidates will be published in the DUK website, and they will also be notified by email.

*Part Time and Industry regular participants also will have a special fee of Rs 50,000 from year 2 onwards.

Admission fee, caution deposit, lab fee, student amenities charges etc. will be additional.
On campus accommodation is charged additionally if availed.
An admission fee of Rs 10,000/- and a refundable caution deposit of Rs 5,000/- need to be paid initially by all the selected candidates to confirm their seats for the Ph.D program.
DUK scholarship is only for those who are not project assistants and do not have external fellowships such as JRF.
All the students who are receiving the DUK scholarship are expected to contribute to the academic activities of the University for around 10 hours every week.

The full-time and part-time doctoral programmes of SMS, CUSAT are designed to foster world class research in various disciplines of management. Each researcher is encouraged to address issues that concern practitioners in today’s enterprises. The programme is meant for focused individuals with a real passion for academics and an inclination to solve management problems through their research.

Each Ph.D student (Both Full-time and Part-time) is required to undertake course work on a full time basis for a minimum period of one semester. The course work should be completed within two years of joining for research, failing which they will be deemed to have discontinued the Ph.D. program. The course work will be treated as Pre-Ph.D. preparation and will be done along with the ongoing semester in the department.

The details of courses opted during this period are as follows:

Course I shall cover the broad area of Research of the candidate. Syllabus and Title for this course shall be prepared by Doctoral Committee (DC) and approved by Research (RC). Course II shall cover the specific topic of research of the candidate. Syllabus and Title for this course shall be prepared by DC and approved by RC. Course III shall focus on Research Methodology which covers areas such as quantitative methods, computer applications, research ethics, training, field work, etc. This course shall be designed for each faculty/department and shall be approved by the Faculty/RC concerned and may be conducted simultaneously in one or more academic unit of research. Course IV is on Research and Publication Ethics (RPE) and will create awareness about publication ethics and publication misconducts. The course structure and syllabus is as prescribed by UGC, and is mandatory in Ph.D. course work. Course V shall be devoted to the preparation of a comprehensive report of review of literature relevant to the candidate’s research and preparation, submission and defense of the Research Proposal.

The dissertation is expected to be a scholarly contribution to expertise relevant to the understanding and resolution of management problems. Students are provided with an opportunity to undertake original research in their area of interest.

First Haj flight of this season to take off from Kozhikode on May 21

This year, the highest number of pilgrims under the State Haj Committee will de part for Haj from Kerala.

MALAPPURAM: The travel of Haj pilgrims from Kerala this year will begin on May 21. Haj flights will depart from three embarkation points in Kerala - Kozhikode, Kannur and Kochi airports. The first Haj flight from Kerala will depart from Kozhikode airport at 12.05 am on May 21. Air India Express flight IX-3011, carrying 166 pilgrims will depart for Jeddah on the first flight. As many as 59 flights, carrying 166 passengers each have been scheduled from Kozhikode.

The second and third flights will depart at 8am and 3pm on the same day. The first flight will reach Jeddah at 3.50am. The first Haj flight from Kochi is on May 26. The journey of Haj pilgrims will start from Kannur on June 1.

This year, the highest number of pilgrims under the State Haj Committee will de part for Haj from Kerala. As many as 10,430 pilgrims will travel from Karipur, 4,273 from Kochi and 3,135 from Kannur. As many as 45 pilgrims will depart from Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai through the State Haj Committee.

Air India Express operates flights for Hajis from Kozhikode airport and Saudi Airlines from two other embarkation points - Kochi and Kannur.“All flight services till June 9 are bound to Jeddah. Necessary additional schedules will also be arranged for those on the waiting list. The return journey of the pilgrims from Madinah begins on July 1,” said an official with the State Haj Committee.

Arrangements at Karipur Haj House

Elaborate arrangements are being made at the Karipur Haj Camp to receive the pilgrims and send them on their journey. An organising committee has already been formed for this purpose. The work on the facilities, including the pandal at the Haj House is in its final stage.

“The main building of the Haj House and the women’s block inaugurated last year have made functional to receive the pilgrims. All necessary facilities have also been arranged for the pilgrims in the airport. More counters will be set up to speed up the immigration process for Hajis. Hajis should reach the Haj camp after directly reaching the airport and handing over their luggage at the Air India Express counter,” the official added.

As part of ensuring facilities at the Haj camp in Karipur, a meeting of the departments concerned was recently held at the Hajj House under the chairmanship of District Collector V R Vinod, who is also the executive officer of the State Hajj Committee.

The representatives of the Airport, Immigration, Customs, CISF, Air India Express, Health, Police, Fire Force, PRD, Railways, KSRTC, RTO, KSEB, Water Authority, BSNL, PWD Roads, Civil Supplies and other departments attended the meeting. State Minority Welfare Department Secretary Mini Antony and representatives of the Kannur and Ernakulam district administrations attended the meeting online.

Tulane grad’s academic journey leads to co-founding medical startup company

Kalen Hall always dreamed of becoming a tenure-track professor. But she could not have pictured the path her academic career would take when she decided to pursue a PhD in biomedical sciences at the Tulane School of Medicine.

Hall grew up near Cocoa Beach, Florida, and went to the University of Florida (UF) for her undergraduate studies, where she majored in biochemistry and anthropology. She knew she wanted to pursue further studies, but took a gap year, working as a research technician in a lab at UF. She debated between pursuing her studies at Tulane or remaining at UF, but ultimately, she said she fell in love with Tulane and New Orleans.

“I loved meeting the faculty and the culture I experienced here,” she said. “It was a big change coming from a large public institution. Here I got the feeling it was a tight-knit and collaborative community.” That feeling was a major deciding factor.

During the summer of 2020, she did a rotation in associate professor Zachary Pursell’s laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. As she was deciding the area of focus for her dissertation, she knew she wanted to look at infectious diseases from a global health perspective. She wrote a long proposal asking both Pursell and professor Lisa Morici with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology to co-mentor her. The project focused on how certain types of bacteria take advantage of losing activity in the DNA repair system, allowing them to mutate and increasing the chance of them becoming drug-resistant.

In her second year as a graduate student, she published a paper on the topic. In the spring of 2023, she formed a company called Informuta along with Leo Williams, a graduate of the Tulane BioInnovation PhD program.

“The company builds off what I did in my PhD work,” she said. “We look at the DNA of bacteria to tell clinicians which drugs would or wouldn’t work. We would also be able to tell clinicians if an infection will become resistant to drugs in the future.”

Informuta has secured more than $470,000 in startup funds, Hall said. Hall and Williams were also the first recipients of the Provost’s Proof of Concept Fund , receiving a $50,000 award.

Hall was also a mentee in the Tulane University Innovation Institute (TUII) Startup Team Mentoring Program and a pitcher in the Equalize pitching program for women academic entrepreneurs. She named a long list of faculty mentors and supporters, including Morici and Pursell, who have helped her on her path at Tulane, such as Kimberly Gramm, the David and Marion Mussafer Chief Innovation & Entrepreneurship Officer for TUII, and Clay Christian, the executive director of commercialization at TUII.

Hall will be leading Informuta as CEO after graduation. It’s a path she hadn’t envisioned for herself at 18, but makes perfect sense a decade later, she said.

“Having a dynamic and challenging job is very important to me, where I am able to drive research, run my own lab and have the creative freedom to operate,” she said. “So, founding a startup makes sense to me.”
