FLVS is short for Florida Virtual School , which is really a fancy name for online school.  FLVS is free to those who live in Florida.  You can use it as a supplement to regular public school, in case you child wishes to take a class over the summer or take a class that isn’t offered at their school.  Or you can use it as a full-time replacement for public school.  Or you can use it in Flex mode.  With both of my boys, we have chosen flex mode.  However, in elementary school and middle school flex works very differently.  I’ll go through both here and discuss how it works.

Supplies required for FLVS

The most important supply is a computer.  I prefer having a laptop for the kids to do their FLVS classes.  They can take the laptops with them and we can do the class from anywhere.  I do find it important to have a computer for each kid, though.  This way they can be working at the same time.  I know that makes things more expensive, but it is really worth it. FLVS has a list of system requirements for their computers that you can check.  Don’t worry about getting a laptop with Microsoft Office installed, you can get a license through FLVS for free.  These are a few of the best laptops that I recommend for FLVS, at various price points.

Notebooks and binders

Crayons and colored pencils

Protractor for Middle and High School Math

First things first, if you wish to enroll your child in an extra class, summer class, or take a class at FLVS while they are enrolled at a regular Florida public school, you will need their guidance counselor’s approval.  I have found the middle school to be better equipped for this than the elementary school.  But with one quick email to the elementary school, this was straightened out and it was approved easily enough.  What are some examples of why you want to do this:

  • Taking a Middle school level class (like Typing / Business Computers) over the summer
  • Re-taking a class that your child didn’t get a good grade in while enrolled in middle / high school. You can do one semester at a time.
  • Taking a class that is not offered at your school, they have a career education class for middle schoolers and another class on study skills and organizational habits.

FLVS as Homeschool

If you wish to use FLVS flex for homeschool purposes, they are a couple things that you will need to do.

  • Withdraw your child from public school
  • Register with your county as a homeschooler
  • Get a copy of that intent to homeschool sent to FLVS
  • Enroll at FLVS
  • Send FLVS any paperwork you have for your child, IEPs, 504s, etc.

Elementary FLVS Flex

Elementary FLVS Flex is organized, but flexible.  It follows a standard school year schedule, Aug – June.  You have class time in a video/audio classroom with your teacher on Tuesday and Thursday.  At 9 am, there is a 1-hour lesson on Language Arts and Social Studies.  Then there is a 15-minute break and at 10:15 there is a one hour lesson on Math, Science, and Technology.  The kids get to participate via video, audio, chat, and other polls and interactions that the teacher coordinates.  On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the teacher has an outline of work that needs to be done.  Several of these assignments must be submitted to the teacher at the end of the week for grading.  Other assignments go in your child’s portfolio.  The work is typically 2-4 hours a day, depending on the day and the motivation of the child.

What do the Elementary FLVS Flex assignments look like:

There are 2 hours of time spent on computer programs a week.  One hour in iReady on English skills and activities.  One hour in DreamBox, a math program that has interactive games.  In addition to time spent in these programs, there is a minimum number of lessons that must be completed in each program each week.  Then there are other assorted lessons like (this is for 3 rd /4 th grade):

  • Watching videos on how to make different letters and then practicing the letters in their notebook
  • Reading a short book or excerpt and answer questions on it (Typically focusing on an area they are studying in Social Studies)
  • Working on Spelling city on vocabulary and spelling tests
  • 20 minutes of reading each day with a short writing activity afterward (5 days a week)
  • Interactive geography games
  • Fun projects
  • Watching short videos on math concepts
  • Worksheets on the math concepts
  • Sections in the science book and activities that go with it
  • Science vocabulary
  • Typing practice
  • Multiplication and division drills

You don’t turn in all the work your child does in FLVS Flex.  Only some things each week get turned in to the teacher.  Those are graded.  Your child will get a grade for each class.  However, you will also need to present a portfolio to your county at the end of the year as a homeschool student.  So, all those other assignments help fill out your portfolio.  I do believe that you can also submit a teacher evaluation in place of a portfolio.  In Palm Beach County, simply submitting the FLVS transcript is sufficient.  Speak to your individual county if you have questions.

Middle School FLVS Flex

Middle school FLVS flex works quite differently.  It truly is flexible.  There is no school year or schedule to abide by.  Most teachers are available 8am-8pm.  A student may take as many or as few classes at a time as they wish.  They may also take the class at whatever pace they wish.  A full year class is supposed to take 32-36 weeks, and a half year or one semester class is 16-18 weeks.  This is doing 2-3 assignments per week.  You can go slower or faster if you wish.  It is easy to work ahead if your child is motivated.

You get one teacher for each class.  In addition to regular assignments that you need to submit, you also must do DBAs (discussion-based assessments) with your teacher on a regular basis.  This is a quick 10-15 minute phone call with you teacher where they talk to you about the details of what you have learned.  This is to make sure that the student is the one doing the work and that they really understand it.  Each assignment can be submitted up to 3 times.  This is because they want students to strive for mastery of the topic. The student can try and get a better grade on each attempt, however, if they get a worse grade the grade can go down.  When you have a quiz or a test, and you repeat it, the multiple-choice questions do change.  They have a bank of questions that get randomly selected for each quiz.

Teachers typically grade assignments in 1-3 days.  They are reliable in providing grades in this time frame from what I have seen.  Some assignments are as simple as a quiz or a worksheet.  Others are more involved with an essay or a short project.  Others might involve watching a video and working on something multi-media for a project.

Submitting FLVS reports to your county

Once a year, your county will require some sort of assessment. In Palm Beach County, the unofficial transcript is enough evidence.  Other counties have different policies.

Hey nice post! I hope it’s ok that I shared it on my Twitter, if not, no problem just let me know and I’ll remove it. Regardless keep up the good work.

' src=

Thanks for this in depth look. It gave me the info I needed.

' src=

Hi Nicole, great article!

I noticed that the link to the FLVS Homeschooling Parents facebook group is broken. We changed the address to: http://www.Facebook.com/groups/FLVSFlex – its still the same group but I opted for a shortened url. Will you please change it in your article?

' src=

You bet, I’ll update it now!

' src=

Hi Nicole, Great article indeed! So Elementary Flex would still be considered enrolled in the Public School but just at home? Am I correct? Would that be the difference between this and an actual homeschooled child, where portfolio must be submitted? Thank you

No, this is considered homeschooling. You would need to file with your county still. Some counties accept FLVS records as the portfolio though.

FLVS Discussion-Based Assessments (DBAs): Options and Alternatives

how to submit an assignment on florida virtual school

At FLVS, we want students to be successful and completely comfortable when learning online. This includes discussion-based assessments.  Even though some students may get nervous or anxious , just remember that DBAs are simply a verbal conversation between you and your teacher.

DBAs are one of the ways we ensure academic integrity (and make sure that it’s actually you doing the work). This is why teachers need to hear directly from you! They will be referencing the work you have done and speaking to students and parents multiple times throughout the course, so there is a common thread of communication that helps teachers connect a face (or voice) to the same student they see in live lessons and through submitted work. DBAs are also there for teachers to help you!

To get ready for a DBA, you can use any notes you have taken, your assignments, and lessons. You can contact your teacher to see if they have any other specific resources for their course to help you prepare.

There is a myth that DBAs can only be completed over the phone and that is not true! Your teacher does need to verbally speak with you directly, but we have several options available to do this. Make sure to contact your teacher to discuss your options.

The main thing is to not be nervous! Your teacher is there to help you succeed. If you have any questions or you get to the point when you are ready to complete a DBA, you can contact your teacher via email, text, or phone. We know you will be fantastic!

Thank you this is very helpful.

' src=

yes you can use your notes 🙂

' src=

I’m about to take a DBA, but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to use my notes during it? Am I allowed to look at my notes during a DBA?

FLVS

Yes, you can reference your notes! Hope your DBA went well. 🙂

' src=

When I enter a live lesson it says my chat permission is turned off. I am not sure why ? I also can’t hear anything in the lives or type

Hi Kimberly. Sometimes the teacher has the chat feature turned off during live instruction. Don’t hesitate to check with them via email or text if you are having trouble or confused!

' src=

If you are taking a foreign language on flvs do your teachers call you (for dba’s) in that specific foreign language or do they ask the dba questions in English?

Hi Naomi! Some teachers may use both depending upon the level of the course. However, students who are new to the language and beginner level will initially focus on vocabulary, etc. Hope this helps!

' src=

Are we allowed to do DBA’s through text if we are not comfortable with using our voice with people online?

Your teachers want to ensure that they are hearing from you – but a video call or live lesson setting (using the mic) are options you could discuss with your teacher!

' src=

I understand DBA’s are to make sure things are going well but now my daughter has 4 dba’s per segment. That is just too much when the reason for home school is flexibility and independence. No good options at all.

' src=

Yeah, when you get into middle school and higher, the DBA amount gets higher! It is annoying how they (my teachers at least!) never let me reschedule, they just have me get a bad score if I can not get in on time, (I have a lot of stuff happening, so it is hard to be ready for every DBA, and sometimes my availabilty changes!) which sucks.

' src=

Are there any alternatives for children with severe anxiety?

Yes! Please discuss options like those listed in this post with your teacher.

' src=

My daughter has a severe anxiety disorder which was the reason for homeschooling in the first place. Talking to people on the phone and doing dbas gives her anxiety to the point where she feels like she’s going to throw up. This has been an ongoing problem and the anxiety has just been getting worse. Is there any alternatives for the dbas?

Hi Ashley. Yes, you can discuss options like those listed in this post with your student’s teacher.

' src=

What is the alternative then? I also joined FLVS because my anxiety was too bad for in school. The fact that we have to talk on the phone completely ruins the whole point of joining to try to feel more comfortable. I cry and feel sick to my stomach before EVERY SINGLE dba, regardless of the fact that I’ve never even failed one before. These ”alternatives” are not alternatives, you’re just recommending other programs to talk on. It isn’t helping.

Elizabeth Jones

Hi Caylee, Please reach out to your teacher or school counselor so we can help!

' src=

Flvs should have an alternative to being on the phone while texting the students questions about what they learned if they have anxiety over getting on the phone. I’m literally about to not get my diploma for a class because I’m too scared to get on a dba. Keep in mind I do have an A in the class but the Dbas have been stopping me from going to my next semester and I’m supposed to graduate in 15 days!!!!

' src=

My daughter has Selective Mutism which basically means she can’t speak in certain situations. She will be physically incapable of completing these DBAs. Is there any alternative option for her that doesn’t require speaking? She gets straight A’s in school and really takes school seriously, so I would hate for her to lose points on this.

Hi Sandra! Yes, the teachers can accommodate. Please be sure to discuss with your teacher when starting so they can make adjustments as needed. You can also reach out to our ESE team with questions or for support! https://www.flvs.net/student-resource/full-time/student-support-services/exceptional-student-education

' src=

Is there a limit to how many DBA’s we can complete a day?

Hi Mya! Students can take 1 DBA per subject a day! Hope this helps. 🙂

' src=

For most students there are but one time my teacher had me take 2 at once to catch up since I finished both modules.

' src=

So if I do the live lesson I don’t have to take the dba?

Hi Emery. Students are required to take DBAs but you can discuss alternative options with your teacher if needed. Hope this helps!

' src=

Do you have to take DBAs? Can you just skip them and do the rest of the work and still pass?

Hi Annie. DBAs are required but you can reach out to your teacher to discuss other options like the ones mentioned above if you need.

' src=

Can you fail a DBA and still continue on with the course? Or do you have to get a 60% or higher on them to continue on? I’m asking because I am a student with an anxiety disorder and I can’t get on a call without breaking down. I have already spoken with my teachers but they said that there is nothing they can do.

Hi Alyssa, DBA’s can be stressful for students. However, they are required to be taken and passed for a student to move on in the course. DBA’s are a great opportunity to talk with your teacher and ask questions to make sure you really understanding the material. If you are nervous, please let your teacher know! This blog may help you as well: https://blog.flvs.net/getting-past-the-fear-of-dbas/

' src=

Hi I accidently forgot my DBA appointment does that mean I fail or do they take points off.

Hi Ariel! You can reach out to your teacher to reschedule your DBA. 🙂

' src=

Hello! I actually am about to take a DBA tomorrow and I just want to ask what “kind” of questions will the teachers ask?? Like, will they ask for definitions, examples, etc.? I’m not gonna lie but I am kind of nervous about the call. I have made sure that I read each chapter and wrote notes just feeling a little anxious and nervous… 🙁

Hi Angelyn, The questions will depend on the course and module you’re working on. It’s okay to let your teacher know that you’re nervous. They are there to help you and make sure you understand the material. Hope this helps!

I actually finished the DBA it wasn’t all bad! For those who are going to do a DBA and you’re really nervous…KEEP READING. Ok, so I am not smart. No one is born smart, your hard work determines your intelligence on something! Cornell notes REALLY helped me do good on the DBA. I’m not saying that I did it perfectly! Now that I know how the DBA will be done, I feel more confident! Also, trust me do cornell notes! You’ll thank me later! Ask honest questions and try your best! You can do this! Look, if I can do this you can do it better! Good Luck!

' src=

If you cant get everything in by the end of the first segment do you fail the class?

Hi there! We recommend reaching out to your teacher to discuss your academic progress. Hope this helps!

' src=

Hi so my question is about the Visual Dba, so do you have to have your camera on or just answer the questions and talk ?

Hi there! You can reach out to your teacher to discuss alternative options, such as a phone call.

' src=

Does all your flvs options require dbas? I like flvs because I can do my work on my own time, it’s just the dbas make me so nervous and the teachers are always putting pressure when I get an answer wrong as if they’re assuming something else. I want to re-register with you guys but I don’t wanna have to deal with the dbas because of anxiety.

Hi Nana. Yes, DBAs are required but you can discuss other options with your teachers.

' src=

If I have my final DBA do I have to do it within 7 days of me submiting the wellness plan for module 6?

Hi TJ, We recommend reaching out to your teacher to ask about upcoming due dates and DBAs. 🙂

' src=

Are teachers able to excuse you from taking dba’s?

A different format may be available, but assessments typically include some kind of verbal component. Talk to your teachers about your options!

' src=

Is Flvs available in summer?

Hi Hanh. Yes, students can take online courses year-round with FLVS Flex. 🙂

' src=

So can a Live lesson substitute a DBA or do we still have to take DBAs.

Hi Makaio, DBAs are required but you can discuss alternatives with your teacher if needed.

' src=

so I went to a small private school last year for my freshman year and I took Spanish there, but there wasn’t like a grading system and I don’t have any type of paperwork that said I finished Spanish 1 and 2. This year I started doing homeschooling (flvs flex) and I just finished Spanish 3 with an A. Would it be a problem for good colleges that I don’t have anything that says I finished Spanish 1 and 2 but did Spanish 3 and planning to do Spanish 4, Or should I just take it on flvs now and finish it both Spanish 1 and 2 after I already finished 3 ?

Hi John, we recommend reaching out to an FLVS counselor to discuss your transcript.

' src=

Am I allowed to take 2 dBA’s in one day in the same course? Because my graduation deadline is Friday & my teacher says I have to wait till Friday to take my 2nd Dba.

Hi HT! We recommend reaching out to your teacher as soon as possible to discuss your graduation deadline.

' src=

Hi! So I am currently a senior, and my graduation is on June 8th. I am currently taking an economics course that I am finishing up, however I have 3 Dba’s, am I allowed to take more than one in a day? Also I completed my first assignment on may 27th, are they allowed to issue a grade before the first 14 days of working in the course?

Hi Derron! We recommend reaching out to your teacher to discuss your upcoming deadlines.

' src=

I have social anxiety and my anxiety gets so bad for DBAs i can’t remember anything I learned, it makes it seem like i don’t do my work when i actually do, and i never pass or it brings my grade down. It’s also super embarrassing when I don’t know the answer, i can sense the teacher getting annoyed. I hate them so much. part of the reason why i wanted to do school online was so i didn’t have to speak to anyone. people often tell me about pen foster because you don’t have to do DBAs but the only thing is that i have to pay. but anyways, i see that the teachers can give alternative options, what are the alternatives?

Hi Harley, we recommend reached out to your teacher to discuss alternative options.

' src=

what happens if you don’t get to finish all the DBAs well you still pass

Hi Jezreel, DBAs are a required part of FLVS courses. You can reach out to your instructor to discuss your progress and options.

' src=

hi i m scehduling a dba through zoom could i just talk in the chat to my teacher?

Hi Sandra, you can discuss alternative options with your teacher if needed. 🙂

' src=

Are teachers allowed to force a student to do a DBA?

Hi Christopher, DBAs are part of each FLVS course but you can discuss alternative with your teacher if needed.

' src=

Hello! When you are doing a Dba in a math class are you aloud to look off your notes to respond to a question you teacher is asking you?

Hi Jonaira! Don’t hesitate to reach out to your instructor if you have any questions. 🙂

' src=

Hello, thanks! So you don’t know then?

Hi Jonaira – DBAs are a way for your instructor to assess your learning throughout the course. Instructors requirements may vary by grade and subject so it’s best to ask your instructor what tools can be used. Hope this helps!

' src=

What am I supposed to write in the student box comment when doing the dba??

Hi Kim, be sure to reach out to your teacher if you need assistance. 🙂

' src=

i get like “im almost going to throw up” sick with the thoughts of dbas, also, I know what I’m talking about most of the time but i usually can’t explain it with talking because I stutter to much, I want to type it but they usually don’t like it. I’ll talk but I’d like to write my response.

Hi Bella, We know that DBAs can be stressful. Be sure to let your teachers know if you’re struggling. They want to help you succeed! This blog may help: https://blog.flvs.net/getting-past-the-fear-of-dbas/

' src=

What should I do if my miss my dba. I was supposed to have my dba but I missed it. How would I rescchedule if there are no spaces left?

Hi Bella, be sure to reach out to your teacher!

' src=

Can you retake a DBA?

Hi Duvud – Yes, be sure to communicate with your teacher if you need to reschedule or retake a DBA. Thanks!

' src=

I feel that those who suffer from anxiety and have 504 plans should be offered an alternative to DBAs. The ADA law requires that schools make accommodations for those with disabilities. Anxiety is a legitimate disability. The fact the FLVS requires a DBA (without a suitable alternative) for people with anxiety is in violation of the law. May I propose allowing the student to chat via text with the teacher while being on zoom or another video method so that the teacher can see that it is the actual student responding? Also, my daughter has taken several online duel enrollment classes at our state college and they do not require DBAs. I recommend fulfilling your high school requirements with those instead of using FLVS.

Hi Linda, We understand your frustration. Please reach out to one of our FLVS counselors so we discuss alternative options.

' src=

Are DBAs unique to foreign language classes or is it for all your classes?

Hi Raheem — Yes, students in World Language courses are also required to take DBAs.

' src=

Can I do 2 AB courses over the summer. I want to do it because I want to double accelerate in the world language I am taking and ELA.

Hi Kavin – To allow for successful course completion, prior to the AP exams in May, please enroll for your AP course(s) during the following registration periods: (1 credit courses: June 1 – September 29) (0.5 credit courses: June 1 – January 30)

' src=

is there another way to schedule DBA’s without going through the link in the course, because the link isn’t working. i know i can text her for an appointment but is there another option other then that? thank u

Hi Abigail, Thanks for reaching out! Please contact your teacher so they can assist you further.

' src=

Hey guys! So if anyone is nervous about DBAs please keep reading! So most teachers have a study guide set up on their home page with all the things you need to know for your DBA so that you can make sure you have everything prepared! This makes it easier especially if you are learning a language and are not sure what to study. So this way you can have everything that you are going to say planned out! Hope this helps!

Florida Virtual School and Dual Enrollment: Path to Success

More than likely, you’ve heard your parents talk about you going to college, especially if you’re in high school. You may feel excited, nervous, happy, or even sad about starting college and leaving behind your childhood. You may have to work to cover the costs of college, and depending on the degree you want, you may have to spend even longer in school just to get the career you desire. However, what if there were a way to start college early?

Dual enrollment is a program for high schoolers to begin taking college classes early. Some community colleges may even offer free tuition for dual-enrollment students. This is a practical and time-saving way to achieve your goals without cutting corners, whether tuition at the college is free or not. As a fifteen-year-old junior in high school aiming for a Bachelor’s degree, I find this to be a smooth and efficient way to begin my education and pursue my Associate’s in Arts degree.

Dual enrollment is particularly advantageous for students at Florida Virtual School (FLVS) if the college offers online classes. Since FLVS students are already accustomed to taking courses online, completing their work on time, and utilizing lessons, practice assignments, and videos to learn the material, they are well-prepared for online college courses. However, college courses, whether online or in-person, have due dates and often require lengthy textbooks and lectures, which are typically much longer than an average FLVS lesson.

One difference between FLVS and online community college is how assignments are completed. At FLVS, typically, there is one lesson for every assignment. After completing the lesson, students submit the assignment. However, with online college, although approaches may vary depending on the teacher and class, students are not usually given lessons for every assignment. Instead, they are provided with a list of pages or chapters to read, and they complete the assignments after reading all the materials and watching the lectures.

College students usually do not have a set number of assignments to submit every week. At FLVS, if you turn in two assignments per week when asked to turn in three, it is usually not a significant issue. However, in college, whether dual-enrolled or not, if an assignment is late even by minutes, a 0% grade is usually assigned, and second chances or excuses are rare. Final exams are usually open-book, as well as quizzes and other assignments in the course, but this can vary depending on the class and the instructor.

Although dual enrollment can be time-consuming, it remains an effective way to get a head start on your education. Every college has its own rules and regulations, but some colleges allow students as young as sixth grade, with at least one high school class, to start dual enrollment. However, it is up to you, your parents or guardians, and your guidance counselor to determine if you are ready to embark on the path to success through dual enrollment.

The ceremony, attended by thousands of peers, family members, and friends, highlighted the accomplishments of a class where more than half of the graduates earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher, surpassing the national average.

FVHS, a fully virtual public school serving students across Florida, saw its 2024 Class President, Jett James Pruitt, address his classmates in a live-streamed speech.

“Many of you in the audience today are world-class athletes, actors, dancers, singers, writers, builders, inventors, entrepreneurs, and volunteers, and others just needed to stay close to home for family, health, or academic reasons,” said Pruitt. “But together, our collective choice to attend virtual high school was a bold one — one that instilled immeasurable maturity, responsibility, and independent learning skills that will stay with us far into adulthood.”

FVHS Principal Suzanna Pacheco inspired graduates to embrace their futures with determination.

“As you stand on the threshold of a new beginning, remember that the paths ahead are vast and varied,” she said. “Each of you holds the key to unlocking your potential and shaping your future. Embrace the uncertainties with courage and determination, for it is through challenges that we discover our inner strength.”

Several awards and honors were presented to students for their academic achievements, leadership, and contributions to the school community. Highlights of the Class of 2024 include:

  • 66 students in the National Honor Society
  • 38 students completing over 250 hours of community service
  • 20 students joining the military
  • 17 students in the Spanish National Honor Society
  • Five students graduating with Associate in Arts (AA) or Associate in Sciences (AS) degrees through dual enrollment

Title Transfers

When you buy a vehicle, you need to transfer the vehicle’s title to establish yourself as the new legal owner.

Before you begin:

Have the California Certificate of Title with you. Make sure the title has been signed by the buyer(s), seller(s), and lienholder (if applicable).

If you do not have the title, complete an Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) .

Have the following:

  • Your driver’s license number
  • Vehicle license plate number
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Legal owner (or lienholder) name and address
  • Vehicle make, model, and year
  • Purchase date and price

Be able to pay the transfer fee . All transfer fees are the responsibility of the buyer.

Allow 30 days from the day DMV receives your documents to process your title transfer.

An individual, co-owners, trust, or business may be established as the owner.

Questions? Ask the Title Transfer Assistant

Frequently asked questions.

Title transfer requirements vary based on circumstance. If you need additional guidance, the FAQs below may help.

Any change of the current registered owner or lienholder (legal owner) of a vehicle or vessel/boat requires transferring the title to the new owner. Transfer of ownership between the seller and the buyer must be started with DMV within 10 days of the sale of the vehicle or boat. You will need:

  • The California Certificate of Title.
  • Signature(s) of the seller(s), buyer(s), and lienholder (if applicable).
  • Transfer fees . All transfer fees are the responsibility of the buyer.

Once you start the online Title Transfer process, a DMV Virtual Assistant will let you know if you also need:

  • Smog certification
  • Use tax and/or various other fees.
  • Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) form.
  • A Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment (REG 262) form.
  • A Statement of Facts (REG 256) form.
  • A Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (REG 138) form.
  • Other less commonly used forms.

The example below indicates where to complete the current California Certificate of Title.

Front of a sample State of California Certificate of Title marked "Front - Certificate of Title" with labels stating "Registered owner(s) shown above signs and dates here to release ownership," "Registered owner shown above signs and dates here to disclose the odometer mileage reading," "New registered oner shown on the back of the title signs and dates here to acknowledge the odometer mileage reading," "Lienholder shown signs and dates here to release ownership." Back of a sample State of California Certificate of Title marked "Back - Certificate of Title" with labels stating "New registered owner(s) completes and signs here," and "New lienholder, if any, completes and signs here."

FRONT OF TITLE: Current registered owner or legal owner (Lienholder) signs and dates here to release ownership. If you are changing legal ownership by removing or deleting a Lienholder, the current registered owner(s) does  not  sign line 1A/1B and does  not  complete lines 3A-13.

BACK OF TITLE: New lienholder’s name (such as a bank or other financial institution), if any, is printed here.

HTVR 32 (REV. 6/2022)

A vehicle can be registered in the name of a trust as registered owners. The purchasers would enter the name of the trust as the new registered owner on the back of the title with one of the trustees signing for the trust. When the transfer of ownership is processed, it would be processed just like a vehicle being registered in a company’s name vs. an individual as owner.

A vehicle or vessel may be owned by two or more co-owners. Co-owner names may be joined by “and”, “and/or”, or “or”. Certificates issued for applications  not  indicating “and” or “or” between the names will show “and” as represented by a slash (/) between the names.

All owners  must  endorse the title or registration application to register the vehicle or boat, but the requirements for releasing ownership vary.

The signature of only  one  owner is required to transfer ownership when the co-owner names are joined by “and/or” or “or”.

The signatures of  all  owners are required to transfer ownership when the co-owner names are joined by “and”. Ownership passes to the surviving co-owner upon the death of a co-owner or, with the surviving co-owner’s release, to a new owner. A deceased co-owner’s interest may only be released by one of the following:

  • Heir of the deceased with an  Affidavit for Transfer Without Probate California Titled Vehicle or Vessels Only (REG 5)  form.
  • Administrator with Letters of Administration.
  • Executor with Letters Testamentary.

When the names are joined by the word “or,” one owner can sell the vehicle without the other’s signature. The word “and” or a slash (/) requires the signature of each owner to sell the vehicle.

Submit the following to DMV:

  • A California Certificate of Title or, if lost, an  Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227)  form, signed for the decedent and countersigned by the heir. Example: John Jones by Mary S. Jones, sole heir, successor, administrator, executor, conservator, guardian, or trustee.
  • Affidavit for Transfer Without Probate California Titled Vehicle or Vessels Only (REG 5)  form completed by the heir. A power of attorney (POA) cannot be used to sign a REG 5.
  • Court order, Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, Letters of Administration with Will Annexed, or Letters of Special Administration.
  • A REG 256 with the applicable sections completed.
  • An odometer disclosure statement for vehicles less than 10 years old completed on the California Certificate of Title or Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form (REG 262) (not available online).
  • Fees for transfer of ownership and, if due, registration renewal and use tax.

Transfer Without Probate

In certain situations, the decedent’s heir may transfer title of a vehicle/vessel without going through probate. Requirements are:

  • Person(s) who succeeded to the property of the decedent.
  • Conservator or guardian of the property of the person(s) who succeeded to the property of the decedent.
  • Beneficiary under the decedent’s last will and testament.
  • Trustee(s), under a trust agreement by the deceased, in which the primary beneficiaries are the next of kin.
  • The value of the decedent’s property in California does not exceed $150,000. Does  not  include vehicles, vessels, commercial coaches, or manufactured, mobile, or floating homes. To calculate the property value, see  California Probate Code  §13050.
  • The vehicle/vessel is titled in California. Vehicles/vessels titled in another state  must  be transferred in that state (requirements may differ from California).
  • 40 days have lapsed since the registered or legal owner’s date of death.
  • An original or certified copy of each owner’s death certificate and, if owned jointly by two or more decedent’s, a REG 5 for the most recent decedent
  • If owned jointly by two or more persons and one is deceased, a REG 5  cannot  be used to circumvent the surviving owner’s interest. However, the surviving owner (if an heir) may complete a REG 5 to release the decedent’s interest. The title must be signed twice, once by the surviving owner and once on behalf of the decedent.

Trust Transfers

Establishment of a trust commits the property or assets of an individual(s) to a trustee for use or safekeeping.

  • A releasing signature for a trust  cannot  be made by power of attorney, unless the power of attorney document is restricted to a specific transaction.
  • If more than one trustee is shown without “or,” or a slash (/) between the names,  each  trustee must sign the title.
  • If the trustee signing is not shown on the title, a REG 256 (Section G) is required attesting to his/her appointment as successor trustee by the trustor or retiring trustee.
  • If a trustee releases interest of a vehicle/vessel not registered to a trust, ownership is determined by the decedent’s will as contained in the trust document. The trust document and REG 262 copies may be required.
  • If no trustee name is shown on the title, a REG 256 (Section G) is required attesting to his/her appointment as trustee or successor trustee by the trustor.

Transfer With Court Documents

The Certificate of Title must be signed for the decedent and countersigned by the executor or administrator.

Once the buyer has all the required documentation and DMV receives the completed Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability from the seller, the seller’s part of the sale is complete. Once the buyer provides DMV with all the proper documents and fees, and all the requirements are met (for example, smog certification), the vehicle record is updated to reflect the change of ownership (the seller’s name is removed) and a registration card is issued to the new owner. A new title is issued within 10-15 calendar days.

It’s easy to submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) online to let DMV know that you are no longer responsible for parking/traffic violations or civil or criminal actions associated with the vehicle after the date of sale.
