  • Furthermore, WHO (2019) highlights that fruits reduce the risk of adiposity in adolescents and young children.
  • As its publication shows, failure to take appropriate amounts of fruits leads to increased risk for various diseases such as myocardial infarction.
  • WHO emphasizes that lack of adequate fruit servings in the meals could cause different types of cancer.
  • While fruits are crucial in our nutritious feeding, only 12% of Americans eat the recommended amount of fruits (CDC, 2021b).

TRANSITION: Now that we have talked about vegetables and fruits, let us delve into proteins and carbohydrates.

Proteins and carbohydrates are essential for our bodies

While some people could be vegetarians, the need for proteins in dietary consumption is crucial.

  • The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 indicate that proteins could be obtained from animals such as poultry, meat, seafood, and dairy or plant sources for vegetarians (DietayGuidelines.gov., 2020).
  • Nutrition scholars, Shan et al. (2019) state that proteins are essential to repair body cells besides promoting growth and development in pregnant women, children, and teenagers.
  • Failure to consume the recommended amounts of protein causes various diseases.
  • As Shan et al. (2019) explain, insufficient protein in the body leads to impaired mental health, muscle-tissue shrinkage, weak immune system, marasmus, and ultimately, total organ failure.

Carbohydrates

  • In their article, nutritionists, Shan et al. (2019) note that carbohydrates are needed in the body as a source of the energy we use to perform daily activities.
  • Therefore, it is important to consume the required portions of carbohydrates for our muscles, brain, and other body parts to function normally.
  • According to Shan et al. (2019), failure to meet the recommended carbohydrate intake leads to low blood sugar causing hypoglycemia.
  • Furthermore, Shan et al. (2019) present that carbohydrates deficiency results in ketosis, characterized by bad breath, mental fatigue, joint pains, headache, and nausea.

TRANSITION: Let us now talk about the last major point in my speech, saturated fats, and sugars

It is imperative to avoid saturated fats and sugars

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 recommend that people should limit the consumption of saturated fats to live healthy lives.

  • The food we consume must stay within one’s calorie needs for our bodies to operate normally.
  • People are not supposed to eat excess calories beyond the levels recommended in the Dietary Guidelines.
  • The Dietary Guidelines call upon Americans to consume foods with the least amounts of saturated fats (less than 10% of the total calories consumed per day, DietaryGuidelines.gov, 2020).
  • CDC (2021a) reports that excessive saturated fats cause higher levels of blood cholesterol eventually leading to heart diseases or stroke.

Besides, the Dietary Guidelines recommend that Americans’ choice of beverages and single food should be nutrient-dense but, with no added processed sugars.

  • A healthy dietary habit limits the amount of processed sugars to fewer than 10% of the total calories consumed daily (DietaryGuidelines.gov, 2020).
  • CDC (2021a) posits that consumption of sugar is the root cause of type 2 diabetes, well as increased risk of heart disease and obesity among Americans.

TRANSITION TO CLOSE: As I conclude my speech today, I would like to remind you that the principal capital asset in our lives in good health.

Incorporating healthy eating in our diets is critical but, lack of it increases the risk of developing the various disease.

Healthy Living Guide 2020/2021

A digest on healthy eating and healthy living.

As we transition from 2020 into 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect nearly every aspect of our lives. For many, this health crisis has created a range of unique and individual impacts—including food access issues, income disruptions, and emotional distress.

Although we do not have concrete evidence regarding specific dietary factors that can reduce risk of COVID-19, we do know that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is critical to keeping our immune system strong. Beyond immunity, research has shown that individuals following five key habits—eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, keeping a healthy body weight, not drinking too much alcohol, and not smoking— live more than a decade longer than those who don’t. Plus, maintaining these practices may not only help us live longer, but also better. Adults following these five key habits at middle-age were found to live more years free of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

While sticking to healthy habits is often easier said than done, we created this guide with the goal of providing some tips and strategies that may help. During these particularly uncertain times, we invite you to do what you can to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and hopefully (if you’re able to try out a new recipe or exercise, or pick up a fulfilling hobby) find some enjoyment along the way.

From 1 billion in 1804, it doubled to approximately 2 billion by 1927, then doubled again to approximately 4 billion in 1974. By 2019, it had nearly doubled again, rising to 7.7 billion (“World Population by Year”). It has been projected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050 (Berners-Lee et al.). At the same time, the average life span also has been increasing. These situations have led to severe stress on the environment, particularly in the demands for food. It has been estimated, for example, that by 2050, milk production will increase 58 percent and meat production 73 percent (Chai et al.). end public domain text

At the same time, about a third of all grains and almost two-thirds of all soybeans, maize, and barley crops are fed to animals (Barnard). According to the World Health Organization, 462 million adults are underweight, 47 million children under 5 years of age are underweight for their height, 14.3 million are severely underweight for their height, and 144 million are stunted (“Malnutrition”). About 45 percent of mortality among children under 5 is linked to undernutrition. These deaths occur mainly in low- and middle-income countries where, in stark contrast, the rate of childhood obesity is rising. Globally, 1.9 billion adults and 38.3 million children are overweight or obese (“Obesity”). Undernutrition and obesity can be found in the same household, largely a result of eating energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugars. Food production must be sufficient, in quantity and quality, to feed the global population without unacceptable environmental impacts. Food distribution must be sufficiently efficient so that a diverse range of foods containing adequate nutrition is available to all, again without unacceptable environmental impacts. Socio-economic conditions must be sufficiently equitable so that all consumers can access the quantity and range of foods needed for a healthy diet. Consumers need to be able to make informed and rational choices so that they consume a healthy and environmentally sustainable diet (10).

Land and Water Use

public domain text Agriculture occupies 40 percent of Earth’s ice-free land mass (Barnard). While the net area used for producing food has been fairly constant since the mid-20th century, the locations have shifted significantly. Temperate regions of North America, Europe, and Russia have lost agricultural land to other uses, while in the tropics, agricultural land has expanded, mainly as a result of clearing forests and burning biomass (Willett et al.). Seventy percent of the rainforest that has been cut down is being used to graze livestock (Münter). Agricultural use of water is of critical concern both quantitatively and qualitatively. Agriculture accounts for about 70 percent of freshwater use, making it “the world’s largest water-consuming sector” (Barnard). Meat, dairy, and egg production causes water pollution, as liquid wastes flow into rivers and to the ocean (World Wildlife Fund and Knorr Foods). According to the Hertwich et al., “the impacts related to these activities are unlikely to be reduced, but rather enhanced, in a business-as-usual scenario for the future” (13). end public domain text

Among these unsustainable practices are monocropping [growing a single crop year after year on the same land], concentrated animal-feeding operations, and overdependence on manufactured pesticides and fertilizers (Hamilton). Such practices deplete the soil, dramatically increase energy use, reduce pollinator populations, and lead to the collapse of resource supplies. One study found that producing one gram of beef for human consumption requires 42 times more land, 2 times more water, and 4 times more nitrogen than staple crops. The Commission also calls for land-use zoning, regulations prohibiting land clearing, and incentives for protecting natural areas, including forests. end public domain text

Greenhouse Gas and Climate Change

public domain text Climate change is heavily affected by two factors: greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration. In nature, the two remain in balance; for example, most animals exhale carbon dioxide, and most plants capture carbon dioxide. Carbon is also captured, or sequestered, by soil and water, especially oceans, in what are called “sinks.” Human activities have skewed this balance over the past two centuries. The shift in land use, which exploits land, water, and fossil energy, has caused increased greenhouse-gas emissions, which in turn accelerate climate change. end public domain text

public domain text Global food systems are threatened by climate change because farmers depend on relatively stable climate systems to plan for production and harvest. Yet food production is responsible for up to 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions (Barnard). While soil can be a highly effective means of carbon sequestration, agricultural soils have lost much of their effectiveness from overgrazing, erosion, overuse of chemical fertilizer, and excess tilling. Hamilton reports that the world’s cultivated and grazed soils have lost 50 to 70 percent of their ability to accumulate and store carbon. Agriculture alone is responsible for fully 10 to 12 percent of global emissions, and that figure is estimated to rise by up to 150 percent of current levels by 2030 (Chai et al.). Münter reports that “more greenhouse gas emissions are produced by growing livestock for meat than all the planes, trains, ships, cars, trucks, and all forms of fossil fuel-based transportation combined” (5). Methane has 25 times and nitrous oxide has nearly 300 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide (Curnow). Social and Cultural Values

public domain text As the Sierra Club has pointed out, agriculture is inherently cultural: all systems of food production have “the capacity to generate . . . economic benefits and ecological capital” as well as “a sense of meaning and connection to natural resources.” Yet this connection is more evident in some cultures and less so in others. Wealthy countries built on a consumer culture emphasize excess consumption. One result of this attitude is that in 2014, Americans discarded the equivalent of $165 billion worth of food. Much of this waste ended up rotting in landfills, comprised the single largest component of U.S. municipal solid waste, and contributed a substantial portion of U.S. methane emissions (Sierra Club). In low- and middle-income countries, food waste tends to occur in early production stages because of poor scheduling of harvests, improper handling of produce, or lack of market access (Willett et al.). The recent “America First” philosophy has encouraged prioritizing the economic welfare of one nation to the detriment of global welfare and sustainability. end public domain text

Currently only 4 percent of Americans are vegetarians, and it would be difficult to convince consumers to change their eating habits. Purdy adds “there’s the issue of philosophy. A lot of vegans aren’t in the business of avoiding animal products for the sake of land sustainability. Unhealthy and unsustainable foods are heavily marketed. Out-of-season produce is imported year-round, increasing carbon emissions from air transportation. Serving sizes are larger than necessary, contributing to overconsumption and obesity. Snack food vending machines are ubiquitous in schools and public buildings. I also made a commitment to myself to cook at home more often instead of relying on takeout or fast food. It wasn't easy at first, but over time, I started to notice a difference in my energy levels and overall mood. I felt better physically and mentally, and I was able to maintain a healthy weight. Making healthy food choices became a priority for me, and I am now reaping the numerous benefits of a nutritious diet.

One of the key components of a healthy diet is variety. Eating a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can provide our bodies with the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals we need to function at our best. It's important to try to incorporate a rainbow of colours into our diets, as each colour group represents different nutrients and health benefits. For example, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene, which can support healthy skin and eyesight. Green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale are packed with antioxidants and can help support a healthy immune system. And blue and purple fruits and vegetables, like blueberries and eggplants, are high in flavonoids and can help support brain health and cognitive function.

In addition to eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, it's also important to include whole grains in our diets. Whole grains, like quinoa, brown rice, and oatmeal, are a great source of fibre, which can help keep us feeling full and satisfied. They can also help regulate our blood sugar levels, which can keep our energy levels steady and prevent unhealthy cravings.

It does not matter whether we are rich or poor, if we have a good health we have the wealth. Health is more important than wealth.

This does not mean we cannot have any wealth with us. It means that we should focus more on our health than the wealth.

We will have a lot of wealth someday but that will go the other day. If we have a good health today and we maintain our health, it will not go away from us like the wealth. It will stay with us.

If we don’t have wealth we can still survive by working. But if we lose our health, the available wealth will also be of no use to us. So, we should always remain healthy.

In order to lead a healthy life, we should eat healthy. If we eat food which is healthy for us, we will always have a good and healthy life. It is necessary to eat the right food in our diet.   

It is important to eat healthy food to have a proper life free from sickness. But in today’s world, everything has advanced so much that we get food items readymade.

People these days consume more of these readymade foods which are most of the time unhealthy and junk foods.

Yes, they are delicious and tempting to eat but they are the cause of deterioration of our health. Due to busy schedule people don’t have the time to make healthy food.

If we don’t have the essential nutrients in our body, our condition will become like the vehicle without enough fuel.

If we eat the right food and get the essential nutrients, we will be happy because our brain gets affected by the food we consume.  

When we don’t eat food properly, we tend to become stressed and be in anger. So, the right food and right nutrients will help us to be happy and not get stressed.

Eating healthy food will help in the proper development of our body. The fast foods and junk foods will be replaced if we eat healthy foods.

So, there is no chance of gaining extra weight or losing weight. This is because the healthy foods help us to control our weight. Healthy food is always good in quality.

So, we don’t have to buy them in large quantity and we can save our money. But if we consume more of fast foods we tend to spend a lot of money. Yes, even it tastes better but the quality is not better than the healthy food.

So, we tend to buy more of these food. Everyone is conscious about their body. If we eat healthy, it will have a positive impact on our body on its own.

We don’t have to waste our money for buying products to make our body better. If we don’t eat healthy food, we will be suffering from various sickness or diseases.

We will remain healthy if we eat healthy food. We will be free from diseases by eating healthy. We will be fit and fine.

As we will be free from any sort of disease, we will live longer. We will not be getting sick, so there will not be any extra expenditure for the health treatment.

But are these really healthy habits? No, they are not. People cut short on their food thinking if they eat less, they will be fit and will not gain weight.

Instead, the person has to face other serious problems. We need to follow various eating healthy habits which will ultimately benefit us for our own betterment.

The most important is a person should drink water regularly. We should not drink water only when we are thirsty.

Water helps in proper digestion of food, eliminates waste and maintains our body temperature. We should prefer eating such food which will give us more nutrients.

Instead of eating readymade food, we should cook healthy food at home. Whatever food we cook, we must wash before we start cooking them.

And most important cleanliness should be maintained everywhere which will directly affect our way of eating healthy.   

We should not be encouraged by the advertisements of food that is shown by different companies for the sale of their food items.

Most of these advertisements will only tempt us to eat them. We don’t know whether these food items are healthy for us or not.

We should know what type of food is healthy for us. Some of the healthy foods are whole grain food items, milk, fish, rice, fruits, eggs etc.

We should eat the items which give are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, fats and minerals. These will help in the overall processing of our body.

We should never skip any of the meals. We should eat all the meals on time and in the right quantity.

Like the breakfast should be eaten like king because if the breakfast is proper we will be energetic to work the entire day.

Dinner should be eaten less because after that we don’t have to any work which requires energy.

If we see delicious food at some place, we should not eat them in such a manner like we eating after a long time. This will spoil our health.

Our health will start deteriorating and body will become weak. Eating unhealthy will not cause problems only for a shorter period of time but it will last for longer.

If we change our eating habits then there is a chance that our health will improve. We will not be able to do any work if we don’t eat healthy food, our life will be totally disturbed.

We will not be happy. We will always be angry and stressed. We will not be able to concentrate anywhere.   

In order to lead a long and healthy life, it is important for us to eat healthy and follow good eating habits.

Eating healthy will help not only to our body but in other areas as well. As our brain is directly affected by the food we eat, our behaviour changes if we don’t eat healthy food.

If we want to live longer, we should eat healthy. We cannot lose our life because of our decision to eat foods which are not good for us.

This article refers to a lower-carb diet than traditional carbohydrate amounts recommended in MyPlate, Mediterranean, or DASH patterns, but not as low as a ketogenic diet. Some refer to this as moderate carb restriction.

The high-protein, low-carb diet is not well defined. Commercially promoted diets (e.g., Zone, Atkins, South Beach, Sugar Busters, keto) all have various macronutrient distribution ranges.

Generally speaking, a lower-carb diet involves less than 45% of calories coming from carbs. Stricter diets limit carbs to less than 10% of calories consumed (or about 20 to 50 grams (g) of carbs daily).

However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) dietary guidelines recommend at least 130 g of carbs daily, which would provide 26% of your calories as carbs if you follow a 2,000-calorie diet.

Some very low-carb diets, like the Atkins or the keto diet, allow only 5% to 15% of calories from carbohydrates. These diets make meeting fiber requirements and getting enough of the B vitamins easily obtained through carb sources difficult.

These diets may work for weight loss in the short term, but they are difficult to follow in the long term and lack some needed nutrients. For these reasons, health professionals do not routinely recommend very low-carb diets.

Diet culture often equates protein with foods that are "good for you" and carbs with food that is "bad for you." But it isn't that simple. Nor should we label foods (or food groups) as either "good" or "bad," particularly when both nutrients are essential.

In research, most studies have defined low-carb diets as less than 30% calories from carbs or, if using grams, less than 100 g carbs daily (under the minimum recommended).

Moreover, there is widespread debate over the ideal proportions of these macronutrients.

A reasonable macronutrient breakdown for a high-protein, low-carb (or moderate-carb) diet would be:

  • 35% calories from carbs
  • 30% calories from fat
  • 35% calories from protein

This allows enough carbs to meet fiber and B vitamin requirements and enough protein to maintain or build muscle mass while losing fat. It also limits fat and saturated fat intake to support heart health.

The diet may require some calorie counting and monitoring of protein intake, which may make following it more labor-intensive for some.

A Word From Verywell

Some people may choose a high-protein, low-carb diet for health benefits, such as maintaining muscle mass. However, as with most diets, it isn’t one-size-fits-all, and some may find it too restrictive for long-term success. When making dietary changes, the best eating patterns are the ones you can maintain for the long run. 

Dietary Requirements for Protein and Carbohydrates

Both protein and carbohydrates are necessary in any diet. Protein provides 4 calories per gram, and the body needs it for tissue and muscle building, enzyme activity, and hormone production.

Carbs also provide 4 calories per gram. Carbs are the main source of energy for the body.

No matter what, it's important to ensure your body is getting enough of the protein and carbohydrates it needs to function properly.

Protein needs vary based on sex, age, body weight, and activity levels.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is set at 0.8 g protein/kilogram (kg) body weight. The RDA is set as the minimum to prevent a protein deficiency.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults get 10% to 35% of total calories from protein or a minimum of 46 to 56 g daily.

High-protein diets generally recommend that 30% to 50% of calories come from protein. For a 2,000-calorie diet, that would be 150 to 250 g of protein daily, or three to five times the minimum amount recommended in the Dietary Guidelines.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends a minimum of 130 grams of carbs daily, including 28 to 34 g of fiber for most people.

For a 2,000-calorie diet, the 130 g carb minimum would make up 26% of the total calories, and some low-carb diets restrict to 26% carbs for this reason. Other low-carb diets may restrict to 30% to 45% of calories from carbs. This is considered a more moderate carb restriction.

Why Are Carbs Important?

Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. When you don't eat enough carbs, the body breaks down fat to form ketones . The ketones then become the body's energy source, and this is known as ketosis.

Advantages of High-Protein, Low-Carb Diets

The advantages of a high-protein, low-carb diet may depend on individual health goals. However, it's important to know that what matters is the types of foods you consume.

A high-protein, low-carb diet will not be beneficial if it includes mostly poor-quality foods.

Benefits of this type of diet that involve nutrients that are good for you can include:

  • Weight loss or body composition changes
  • Blood sugar control
  • Lower cholesterol

Weight Loss or Body Composition Changes

High-protein, low-carb diets may help with weight loss. This is largely thought to be related to the higher protein intake, which makes you feel fuller and more satiated.

Weight loss often includes muscle loss. A higher protein intake can help preserve this muscle. Studies have shown that higher-protein diets improve body composition and overall energy expenditure, resulting in weight loss and maintenance.

However, some studies have suggested that there is not much of a difference between the effects of low- or high-carbohydrate diets on weight loss. In other words, any diet that requires careful selection of high-quality foods and appropriate portion sizes can result in these changes on the scale.

If you're looking to lose weight or change body composition in a sustainable manner, consult with a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) who can help you devise an eating plan that works for you.

Improve Blood Sugar Control

People with diabetes must learn to control blood sugar levels through diet and/or medications.

Low-carb eating patterns reduce hemoglobin A1C levels and the need for blood sugar-lowering medications. Hemoglobin A1C levels are a measure of blood sugar control over the previous three-month period.

People with diabetes should work with their healthcare providers, an RDN, or a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) when making diet modifications. Changing their diet may mean changes to medications, and unmonitored carb restriction could lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels).

Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can increase the risk of complications, such as kidney disease. The kidneys process excess protein in the body, so high amounts can add further stress. Your healthcare provider can check your kidney function and inform you if high protein intake is advisable.

Reduce Cholesterol Levels

A high-protein, low-carb diet may help reduce markers of heart disease risk like cholesterol levels, but this remains controversial:

  • Some data show that low carbohydrate diets can help lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure in the short term. However, after two years on a low-carb diet, there was no effect on heart disease risk factors.
  • Other research suggests little difference in the effects of low- or high-carb diets on weight loss and heart disease factors.
  • Low-carb diets have also been shown to slightly increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in adults who are overweight or obese. However, this increase was small.
  • Higher intake of plant proteins was associated with reduced all-cause and heart disease mortality.
  • A separate review of cohort studies found that high-protein diets did not affect cardiovascular events.

More well-designed studies would help determine the long-term outcomes of a high-protein, low-carb diet.

Focusing on Specific Heart-Healthy Foods

A heart-healthy diet is more multifaceted than just focusing on general carb or protein intake. In fact, while some sources of carbs and protein are healthy options, others may be less so. For example, some meats can be high in saturated fat, a type of bad fat that can contribute to high cholesterol.

Instead, opt for protein sources such as lean meat, nuts, and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids .

Including plenty of soluble fiber, fruits and vegetables, and other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids is also recommended.

Disadvantages of High-Protein, Low-Carb Diets

The disadvantages of the diet mostly relate to nutrient intake, as well as heart and kidney health, and include the following:

  • Difficulty meeting fiber requirements . The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consuming 22 to 28 g of fiber daily for females and 28 to 34 g for males.
  • Difficulty getting enough B vitamins , which are mostly available in carbohydrates. A good example of an essential B vitamin obtained through carbohydrates is folate. Folate is especially necessary in higher amounts during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects.
  • Many protein sources are also sources of saturated fats (red meats and dairy products). Consuming these in excess may raise cholesterol levels and increase your risk of heart disease.
  • Consuming excess protein may stress your kidneys , especially in people with kidney problems.
  • A high-protein diet can cause the body to lose more calcium than normal . Theoretically, this could lead to osteoporosis , but the available research suggests that protein intake above the RDA in older adults improves bone mineral density and reduces the risk of hip fractures.
  • Higher protein intake may also lead to kidney stones , but research hasn't been able to confirm this. One study concluded that high-protein diets that include adequate intake of fruits and vegetables may inhibit the development of kidney stones.
  • Some studies suggest that low-carb diets are associated with an increase in all-cause mortality , but these are based on limited observational studies.

Studies have found that high-quality, healthy food choices have more of an effect on reducing mortality than simply following a low-carb or low-fat diet with poor-quality food choices.

To increase your protein intake, focus on high-quality lean meats or fish and plant-based protein sources:

  • Lean protein sources: chicken without skin, turkey, lean beef
  • Fish and seafood: fresh fish, shrimp, crab, scallops, canned tuna or salmon
  • Soy products: tofu, edamame
  • Nuts and seeds: almonds, nut butter, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds
  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Eggs or egg substitutes

Sources of carbohydrates can include produce and limited amounts of fruits, starchy vegetables (such as potatoes or squash), and high-protein grains (like beans, lentils, or quinoa) if they fit your level of restriction.

Choose sources like beans, lentils, and fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure you get enough fiber with your carb choices. Non-starchy vegetables provide negligible amounts of carbs. Fruits, beans, and lentils will contribute to your carb intake, and limited amounts may fit depending on your level of carb restriction.

The American Heart Association recommends choosing lean cuts of meat and poultry and avoiding red and processed meats for protein sources.

Also, it is recommended to choose low-fat dairy products rather than higher-fat options. For example, skim or 1% milk is recommended over whole milk for adults.

For carbs, limit or avoid foods like:

  • Grains and starches: bread, pasta, rice, baked goods
  • Foods with refined sugar: cakes, pastries, and cookies
  • Sweetened drinks: sodas, juices, sports drinks, sweetened coffee or tea, beer
  • Sweeteners: sugar, honey, agave, maple syrup
  • Processed foods: chips, breaded and fried foods, pizza

The Bottom Line

A moderately low-carb, high-protein diet can have beneficial health effects if it involves high-quality foods. No matter what, it's still important to get the necessary amounts of nutrients for your body. Though there is no consensus on ideal macronutrient distribution, a good rule of thumb is ensuring you are getting enough to meet nutrient requirements.

If you plan to follow this type of diet, avoid processed meats or meats that are high in saturated fat to achieve your protein intake. If you limit carbohydrates, ensure you are still getting adequate amounts of fiber.

There is not enough evidence to suggest that a high-protein, low-carb diet is superior.

According to the Dietary Guidelines Committee, there is limited evidence that macronutrient distribution outside the acceptable ranges they recommend affects heart disease risk.

Yet, a high-protein, low-carb diet, as discussed here, may be beneficial for weight loss for some people. It may also help control blood sugar and reduce heart disease risk factors. However, it does have its downsides. People with diabetes or kidney problems should discuss this diet change with their healthcare providers before implementing it.

If a high-protein, low-carb diet doesn't seem right for you, try making simple changes to improve your overall health, such as:

  • Consuming nutrient-dense foods
  • Limiting processed foods
  • Limiting sugar

Work with an RDN who can help determine your needs and goals. They can also help tailor your eating patterns to your preferences.

After some days everybody in the town started to feel much better. That lesson had taught them to not abuse junk food. Fruit was far better to eat and everybody liked it a lot. The fruit seller was very happy to sell his products and to assist people to be healthy.

A long time ago, a boy named Rahul and a woman named Jaya loved to eat a lot of junk food. They lived with their grandfather, grandmother, mom and pop . They both were keen on eating burgers and pizzas. Their mom and pop used to tell them every day to eat healthy food. One day, their mom lovingly explained to them to not eat junk food and told them if they do not stop eating junk food their eyesight will become weak. Jaya listened to his mother, started eating healthy food but Rahul didn’t listen to his mother and continued to eat food only. After an extended time passed, his parents stopped explaining to him about it. And at some point, within the school Rahul’s teacher asked him an easy question as 2+1? As Rahul didn’t see the question properly he wasn't able to answer it.

As a consequence, the teacher scolded Rahul for not answering such an easy question and called his parents within the school. Teacher told his parents about the full incident and his parents scolded Rahul and they felt bad, so inquired him that you simply are not able to give an answer to such an easy question as 2+1? Rahul said  that I know the answer is 4 but the reason is that I was not able to see the question properly. His mother said I told you to not eat junk food but you didn’t listen to me. See now your eyesight is weak. Thereafter, his father took him to an ophthalmologist for check-up and got his eyes tested. So, as I also wish for junk food like Maggi, burger and pizza but after seeing this video I reduced eating this stuff . Like during this story their eyesight became weak by eating junk food. So, I also decided to not eat junk food very often because I want to go into the Indian Air force. I need 6/6 eyesight. And, I noticed the importance of eating healthy food.

In this article, we looked at two distinct tales involving fast food. The narrative taught us that eating vegetables and other nutritious foods are our buddies. The nutritious food fuels us. In the second story, we also saw how the child struggled to respond to the teacher's question while knowing the answer, and how this made him recognise the value of eating well.

You are what you eat. As the end of the year is quickly approaching, it's important to keep your energy up. Here are a few tips to consider when fueling up for finals.  

Choose brain foods

Certain foods help with memory and optimize brain function, including:

  • Antioxidants: People who eat fruits and vegetables regularly have better brain function and memory. Antioxidants protect the brain from free radicals that can cause cellular damage.  Start NOW and aim for four to five servings of fruits or vegetables daily in a variety of colors.
  • Carbs: Your brain only uses glucose, which comes from carbs. Eat carbs with meals throughout the day. Be sure to choose higher fiber, whole grain carbs for longer lasting energy. Think oatmeal, popcorn, brown rice over pasta, potato chips or Lucky Charms.
  • Omega-3s (EPA/DHA): These are found in fish, seaweed, flax and small amounts in some greens. They are active in the brain and can empower function when eaten regularly.
  • Fluids: One of the top causes of fatigue is dehydration. Stay hydrated; water is best!  

Eat regularly

Your stomach empties in four to six hours. Keep those meals and snacks coming! Take a short break to eat regularly and your studying will be more productive.   

Snack smart

Limit simple sugars and/or high fat snack food that might make you more tired or deplete your energy. Seeds include healthy fats to power your brain.  Dried fruit includes glucose and antioxidants. Dark chocolate includes glucose and antioxidants, and also cocoa, which can help with memory and concentration.

Here's an idea for the perfect studying snack:

  • Mix two tablespoons of dried fruit of your choice with two tablespoonds of seeds (or nuts!) of your choice.
  • Add in a sprinkle of chocolate.
