How to get NBN™

Our  coverage map  is automatically updated with the latest information available from NBN Co. If you’ve checked your address and the results advised say that your address is ready to get NBN™ broadband, congratulations!

All you’ll need to do is pick out an NBN™ plan and  sign up online , or give one of our small business experts a call on 13 86 89 . If it turns out you need a technician to visit and install some NBN™ equipment, don’t worry - we'll help organise this for you.

Can I keep my existing telephone number to use on the NBN™?

In most cases, we can bring your existing telephone number over to the NBN™ network. Just call our dedicated business team on  13 86 89  to discuss the matter further.

Alternatively, you can specify that you’d like to keep your telephone number when you  sign up online . We’ll keep you updated on the progress of your number transfer.

I have existing broadband/phone services. How can I upgrade to NBN™?

Typically your address can be upgraded to NBN™ broadband with little to no downtime. More often than not you can continue to use your existing services until your new NBN™ equipment has been installed and your service has been activated. In the meantime, you should check to make sure that your current modem will be compatible with your new NBN™ broadband service.  Learn more .

Upgrading is simple, just  sign up online  or call our dedicated business team on 13 86 89 to get started. If you’re already with iiNet, you can select “Upgrade to NBN” in  My Products > Broadband  in  Toolbox .

Remember:  Moving to NBN™ broadband will not necessarily cancel your existing broadband and phone services. Once you've upgraded, please contact your existing provider to ensure your old services are cancelled, otherwise you may continue to be billed for them.

I already have NBN™. How do I switch my NBN™ provider to iiNet?

If you already have an active NBN™ Fibre connected at your address and you'd like to switch to an iiNet Business NBN™ plan , please call us on 1300 455 806 between 8AM-8PM (AEST), Monday to Friday, to arrange a Service Transfer. Once lodged, Service Transfers typically take less than 2 business days to complete, and downtime is typically less than 24 hours.

If you do not own the active NBN™ service connected at your address (i.e. you've just moved in and the previous tenant has left their services connected) then please see Connecting Outstanding FAQ instead.

NBN™ Installation

How long does it take to get connected to nbn™.

Typically, NBN™ connections are completed within 2-20 business days - this varies depending on whether or not you've already had your NBN™ equipment installed as well as NBN™ technician availability.

What happens when NBN™ is installed?

If an NBN™ technician is required to visit your premises to install any required equipment or complete your NBN™ connection, we'll be in touch to book a suitable appointment with you. An installation is typically not required if NBN™ has been previously connected at your address.

The type of equipment you'll receive depends on the type of NBN™ being connected. Give our  Connecting to the NBN™  article a read for more information.

Please note:

  • iiNet does not offer a Priority Assistance service. If you have Priority Assistance or believe you may be eligible, please consider this before lodging your application.
  • We recommend you register any medical alarm services on the NBN Medical Alarm Register, which can be found on the NBN Co website.

NBN™ Contract & Fees FAQ

With iiNet Business NBN™ broadband, you get the flexibility of choosing either a no lock-in contract term or a 24 month contract term. The table below outlines the differences between the two options:

What is the New Development Fee?

Effective  1 April 2016 , the $300 New Development Fee (NDF) is charged for all NBN™ broadband connections in the following circumstances:

  • The first connection at a premises in a newly developed area i.e. a suburb with no pre-existing telecommunications infrastructure.
  • The first connection(s) at a premises in an establish area in the rare instance that a developer has increased the number of dwellings on the same plot of land e.g. demolished a single house and built a block of units.

Once the NDF has been charged at an address, it will not be charged again for subsequent connections, provided the number of dwellings at that address has not increased.

At iiNet, we pass on the full $300 NDF charge as billed by our wholesaler, NBN Co, to  new customers . For our  existing customers  switching from another kind of iiNet broadband to iiNet NBN™, we absorb part of this fee and charge just $250. These charges are clearly visible when applying for a service – they are also included in any  Critical Information Summary  for NBN™ broadband plans sold after 1 April 2016, and the Pricing Schedule of our  Customer Relationship Agreement .

Can I change my NBN™ plan after I've signed up?

You sure can! Whether you have a no lock-in contract or a 24 month contract you may switch between our NBN™ plans at any time without incurring contract break fees. A plan change fee of $29 may apply if you change to a plan of lesser value.

If you wish to change your NBN™ plan, check out our  Changing your broadband plan in Toolbox  guide or simply call us on  13 86 89 .

General Terms

Connecting to the nbn™.

  • Once the NBN™ roll out has been completed in your area, services over the legacy copper & HFC (Cable) network will no longer be available at your premises. Any copper & HFC (Cable) services that are still connected at your premises on the Disconnection Date are liable to be disconnected. iiNet Cable services in Geelong, Mildura and Ballarat are not subject to this disconnection.
  • For FTTN & FTTB this will occur outside of your premises during your installation
  • For FTTC this will occur when your NBN™ service is activated, which typically occurs when your NBN™ Connection Box is connected (and working) by either you or an NBN™ Installer
  • For FTTN, FTTC or FTTB this may be the first telephone wall socket in your premises or, in the case of multi-dwelling units, your side of the Main Distribution Frame.
  • For FTTP or HFC this is a Network Termination Device supplied by NBN Co.
  • Customer equipment (such as new or existing cabling and telecommunications outlets) beyond the network boundary point may not work when you connect to NBN™. You may require a registered cabler to connect these to your NBN™ service. You will be responsible for the cost of any such cabling work.
  • Your NBN™ service does not include a battery backup. This means your business will be unable to access any internet and telephony services provided by NBN™ during a power outage. This includes making calls to emergency service numbers like 000. Please ensure you have alternate ways of making calls, such as mobile phone.
  • If you transfer your existing NBN™ service, you understand that you are responsible to your current broadband provider for any charges incurred until this transfer is complete.
  • The activation of your selected services does not necessarily cancel any existing phone or broadband services. It is your responsibility to contact your existing service providers to ensure that unwanted services are cancelled, otherwise you may continue to be billed for them.

Telephony Services

  • NBN™ Fibre (FTTP) may include Fibre Phone instead of Netphone, which does not require a VoIP-compatible modem to operate.
  • NBN™ Satellite does not include access to NBN™ Phone.
  • Calls to 000 emergency services are not guaranteed in the event of a power outage.
  • Priority Assistance  services are not available from iiNet.
  • Calls to 19/1900 numbers are not available.
  • Calls to  certain 'high-risk' international destinations  are not available by default.
  • You are required to waive your rights under the  Customer Service Guarantee.
  • Timed international calls are charged per second.
  • Calls to Australian mobile numbers are charged per 30 second block.
  • Included calls are subject to our  Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Business NBN™ Phone must be paired with an active iiNet Business NBN™ service. If your Business NBN™ plan is cancelled, your Business NBN™ Phone service will also be cancelled.
  • Transferring an existing phone number to NBN™ Phone will disconnect the existing phone service. After a successful transfer, please contact your existing provider to ensure that your phone service and any add-on services are cancelled.
  • There are multiple types of broadband and phone on the NBN™, with different hardware setups and requirements.  Learn more.
  • A 24 month contract gives you access to a new $0 NBN™  WiFi modem.  A $10 delivery fee applies.
  • You may be required to purchase an iiNet-provided modem to be supplied with an iiNet NBN™ service. This requirement is confirmed in your signup cart.
  • May be shipped to you for self-installation (if your premises is eligible)
  • Will reverse-power the NBN™ network to provide you with a working service
  • Remains the property of NBN Co and should not be removed from the premises

All about your quota

  • Both uploads and downloads count towards your monthly quota.
  • If you exceed your monthly Business NBN™ quota you will not be charged excess fees. Instead your Business NBN™ plan will be shaped to the speeds shown below. Unlimited data plans do not have a quota limit.
  • You may purchase a  Data Pack  to unshape your Business NBN™ service.

Contract Terms

Business NBN™ plans are available on both no lock-in contract and 24 month contract options. If you end your contract early, the below break fees apply. These fees cover the costs reasonably incurred by iiNet when the contract commenced.

Fair contract guarantee

When you sign up to a contract, you commit to retain your NBN™ service for the set period.

However, our fair contract guarantee lets you change between plans at any time without the need to break your agreed contract.

Withdrawal fees

Withdrawing an order that you have placed with us will attract a withdrawal fee of $60. This is to cover our costs in preparing to supply the service to you.

If you have selected a modem from us, the hardware fee paid will be payable by you unless the modem is returned to us in its original condition

Delivery fees are not refundable.

* Any cabling that is required in your premises beyond the Network Boundary Point is your responsibility. This does not include the purchase of a modem. There may be additional installation fees for non-standard premises, however your agreement to these fees will be confirmed prior to iiNet setup.

So you've gone a bit crazy on the old downloads. Don't sweat it, we've all been there - just pick up an iiNet Data Pack to replenish your monthly broadband quota. It's a bit of extra quota added to your Peak, Off-Peak or Anytime allowance for full-speed access when you want it. Available through Toolbox . And we promise not to tell anyone. Honest.

How to choose an nbn plan for your business internet

business plans nbn

The internet is critical for nearly every business. Whether it’s a morning team video call, or collaborating on your latest merchandise designs, you want smooth, uninterrupted digital experiences.

Business internet services over the nbn ® help you connect to the internet with confidence. With different plans and providers available, how can you choose a service that suits your business’ needs? In this article we break down the key things to consider.

Check what’s available at your address

The first factor to check is whether nbn is available at your business address. There are over 12 million premises connected to the nbn , or ready to connect, so it’s likely you’ll have access to an nbn service.

So, first check if your premises is nbn ready and what nbn technology type is available at your address. Service provider offerings may be limited by the technology available.

Two of the most common types of nbn technologies are fibre to the premises (FTTP) and fibre to the node (FTTN).

  • FTTP technology runs optic fibre from the nearest available fibre node direct to your premises.
  • FTTN technology runs optic fibre from the nearest available fibre node in your street, or a nearby street with a final stretch of copper to your wall socket inside your premises.

Services running on FTTP technology tend to have the highest maximum speeds.

If you’re unsure whether your premises is nbn ready, you can check your address online to determine the nbn availability in your area.

If there is no nbn availability, or your business premises is not nbn ready, you’ll be shown alternative available connection types.

Choose the right nbn speed for your needs

The speed of the nbn connection will influence your internet experience.

Some of the common things you might want to do as a business can rely on a higher nbn upload speed as well as download speeds. These include:

  • Video conferencing
  • Saving files in the cloud
  • Uploading high quality images or video to your website or social media accounts
  • Transmitting large files between your team, or with suppliers and customers

Higher upload and download speeds can help you be more productive.

Which speed is right for me?

Service providers show speeds in Mbps (megabits per second), using the typical maximum speed for the plan. Here is an example of how different speeds might meet different needs.

nbn50 plans are good for:

  • Basic business applications, email, and web browsing
  • High definition streaming and video conferencing
  • Downloading large files

nbn100 plans are better for:

  • Smoother use of critical business applications with less interruptions
  • Ultra high definition streaming and video conferencing
  • Faster uploads and downloads

Remember that several factors influence the speed you experience. These include in-premise set-up and wiring.

How much tech support is available?

It’s worth looking into how your potential service provider approaches tech support. Capabilities can vary widely. What ongoing support does the provider offer? And is that in line with what’s important to you?

For example, do they offer 24x7 nbn tech support over the phone? No one wants to have a problem with their nbn connection. Having experts available around the clock gives you the peace of mind you can get issues fixed fast.

You may also want to see if providers offer proactive support to help deliver a seamless installation experience.

When you sign up with us for a new nbn connection, or switch your service to Telstra, you get an expert connection manager from the moment you submit your order. We conduct a pre-connection assessment to get you ready for installation, send you regular updates on your order progress, and check in with you after connection to ensure everything works as expected.

Is there extra back up to help keep you connected?

Check how the service provides reliability and resilience to minimise the impact of downtime. This is critical if your business relies on internet connectivity to carry out your day-to-day operations.

At Telstra, we offer 4G mobile backup with each business nbn plan (in areas with 4G mobile coverage.) In the event of a fault on the nbn , our Smart Modem can switch your service to the 4G mobile network automatically. We’ll switch your service back to the nbn when the fault is resolved.

The 4G mobile backup service is uncapped and unshaped when there’s a fault. This means there is no limit on data allowance or speed, and it's included in the plan, so you don't have to worry about additional charges.

Does the service come with advanced cyber security?

The safety and privacy of your business and its data is a paramount concern. Check whether the service provider offers security measures such as two-step verification and 24/7 network monitoring.

Telstra’s industry-leading cyber security measures and expert security team helps stop cyber threats and scams before they even get to you. And we block millions of cyber threats every single day.

How flexible is the plan?

Business conditions can change rapidly, and you want the ability to change with them.

Look for nbn plans that offer the flexibility and scalability that allow you to adapt your service. Consider your needs today but also your projected growth. This way, you can avoid paying for a level of service you don't need, while also having access to bandwidth to support your growth and make your operations more efficient.

Choosing the right nbn plan for your business can be a challenge. There are many business internet options and many different service providers to consider. Having a clear understanding of what’s available to you, what your business needs, and how the options available meet those needs is a good first step.

You can't purchase an eero device from More on a stand-alone basis or without a compatible More internet service.

Each More eero comes with an eero Secure subscription included for 12 months at no additional cost for use with a compatible More internet service. The initial 12-month subscription commences:

  • if you purchase an eero device with a new compatible More internet service, on the date that service is first activated; or
  • if you have an existing compatible More internet service, on the date your eero device is sent to you.

After this promotional period, your eero Secure subscription automatically converts to a paid month-to-month service. You will then be charged monthly in advance at the recommended retail price (RRP) per account (regardless of number of purchased or connected devices) as part of your standard monthly bill until your eero Secure subscription is cancelled. The price of an eero Secure subscription is currently $2.99/mth (inc GST) per account, subject to change on 30 days notice.

You cannot purchase an eero device from More without also receiving an eero Secure subscription. However, you can cancel it at any time by contacting us. Cancellation will take effect at the end of your current billing period, as long as it is requested at least 5 days before that date. Otherwise, it will take effect at the end of your next billing period. You can continue to use eero Secure until the date of cancellation.

If you cancel your eero Secure subscription, we will disassociate it from all your eero devices connected to your account and you can continue to use a disassociated device with your compatible More internet service. However, once this occurs, you cannot reactivate an eero Secure Subscription with More unless you purchase a new eero devices from us.

Your eero device and eero Secure subscription are subject to the full offer T&Cs, applicable standard terms of service and policies available on the Policies page of our website. By continuing with your eero device purchase you agree to these terms.

However, Pre-Order today and we’ll submit the order to NBN the minute your address is ready.

You’ve selected a stand-alone modem with no NBN plan. We can only send stand-alone modems to existing customers who have ordered or who have an active NBN plan with us.

LOOKS LIKE YOU’RE PLANNING TO USE YOUR OWN MODEM?

By selecting this option you are responsible for configuring your modem. Due to the high number of devices available on the market, we can only provide limited ‘best efforts’ support in getting you online and we may be unable to perform speed testing of your connection. If you are not confident configuring your own device, we highly recommend purchasing a new modem from us.

* nbn® Speed Tier refers to the maximum possible speed of the relevant plan outside business peak hours. Your actual speeds will be slower and may vary due to a range of factors including the number of concurrent end-users your modem location, your equipment and software, nbn® technology type at your premises, network capacity and traffic and the type/source of content being downloaded or uploaded.

** The Superfast and Ultrafast plans are only available on some HFC connection types. The Business Superfast, Business Ultrafast and Business Ultrafast Plus plans are only available on FTTP connection types. Please use our website address-checking tool to establish if this plan is available to you.

^ Typical busy speeds are measured between 8am-6pm and are subject to change. Actual speeds may be slower and vary due to a range of factors.

Need help choosing the best NBN plan for you? We’re here to guide you with our expert recommendations every month, including our pick from the popular NBN 50 plans to the super speedy NBN 1000 tier. All the NBN plans we’ve chosen promise to consistently deliver the speed you want at a reasonable price.

When we make our recommendations for the best NBN plans, the two main factors we consider are price and speed. For price, many of the best NBN providers offer a six-month discount when you first sign up, while others will occasionally extend that discount to 12 months – these are great ways to save money on your NBN plan.

We're beginning to see NBN prices plateau following the introduction of a new wholesale pricing structure introduced towards the tail end of 2023. Those changes did mean select plans of 100Mbps and faster came down in price , but this month we're not seeing as many changes to the regular monthly costs following introductory discounts. The only change of note we've spotted is TPG increasing prices on its NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans by AU$5 to AU$10 per month. But in return, the regular price of its 250Mbps plan has been reduced from AU$124.99 to AU$94.99.

Elsewhere, the introductory discounts on offer have been getting more aggressive, making now potentially a great time to switch your NBN plan.

Speed is also important when choosing the best NBN plan, so we consider what speed the telco is offering when making our recommendations, and compare it against others in the same tier. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) monitors the performance of select NBN providers, and we use this to make sure you’re getting what’s promised.

The quick list

Ready to find out what the best NBN plans are? A roundup of our choices are below, with each being our best pick for different use cases and budgets:

Kogan Internet logo

Best NBN plan for home (NBN 50)

We've chosen a brand new provider for the best NBN plan for home this month, with Kogan Internet now taking top honours. The bulk of this decision is down to price, because at the time of writing, Kogan Internet's NBN 50 plan is the cheapest we can find. Flip was a long standing holder of this title, but the telco recently increased its regular price further, to AU$74.90.

As a result, Kogan Internet is now the cheapest – both introductory price and ongoing – advertises maximum typical evening speeds and appears to be getting good reviews online. Kogan Internet also promises to refund you double the difference if you happen to find a comparable NBN plan from an approved major provider. Clearly it's confident in its ability to deliver.

Cost breakdown : AU$58.90p/m (first 3 months, then AU$68.90p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$796.80 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$826.80

Exetel logo

Best NBN plan for gaming

Exetel has reclaimed its spot as our pick for the best NBN plan for gaming on the back of the most recent data from the ACCC , which found Exetel to have the lowest latency among all providers monitored during the previous quarter. Specifically, Exetel was found to have an average latency of 8.3ms during all hours of the day and 8.5ms during the busier hours of the day. Our previous pick for this category, Superloop , is the second fastest.

Either provider is ultimately going to be a great pick if you do a lot of online gaming, but we have to choose Exetel for its ever-so-slightly lower ping speeds and the fact it's one cent cheaper each month.

Cost breakdown : AU$83.99p/m (first 6 months, then AU$98.99p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$1,097.88 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$1,187.88

Spintel

Best NBN plan for streaming

We're maintaining Spintel's NBN 100 plan as the being the best NBN plan for streaming this month. It continues to fend off competition from the likes of Exetel and Flip – which are still very solid choices – but keeps its crown because it offers a top typical evening speed of 100Mbps for the incredible price of AU$69 a month for your first six months. After the promo period ends, your bill will only increase to AU$79.95, which is one of the lowest ongoing rates available in this speed tier. While Spintel doesn’t appear in Netflix’s ISP Speed Index it’s received lots of positive feedback on Product Review .

Cost breakdown : AU$69p/m (first 6 months, then AU$79.95p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$893.70 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$959.40

Best NBN plan for heavy users (NBN 100/20)

It might not take top honours for streaming, but we’ve selected Exetel as having the best NBN plan for heavy internet users. Specifically, we've chosen its 100Mbps NBN plan because it’s consistently a top performer in the ACCC’s broadband reporting and it comes with five Speed Boost days a month, which allows you to temporarily boost the speed of your plan to NBN 250, five times a month.

Cost breakdown : AU$68.99p/m (first 6 months, then AU$84.99p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$923.88 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$1,019.88

Flip NBN logo

Best NBN plan for light users (NBN 25)

For a household of one or two light internet users, an NBN 25 plan should prove to be plenty fast enough. If you just want to browse the internet and stream in HD, Flip is our recommendation for the best NBN 25 plan. It has a cheap introductory offer of just AU$44 a month for your first six months, before increasing to a low ongoing rate of AU$54.90. It also comes with unlimited data, and a typical evening speed of 25Mbps.

Cost breakdown : AU$44p/m (first 6 months, then AU$54.90p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$593.40 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$658.80

Best NBN plan for large households of 4+ (NBN 250)

Spintel’s NBN 250 plan continues to be our pick for best NBN plan for large households, primarily due to its exceedingly low price. You'll pay just AU$75 a month for your first six months before it reverts back to the standard price of AU$85.85. That standard pricing continues to be the lowest we can find on the NBN 250 tier by a long shot, and the average cost is currently just over AU$109 a month. Spintel’s typical evening speed is 211Mbps, so if outright speed is more important than cost, our second choice is Superloop .

Cost breakdown : AU$75p/m (first 6 months, then AU$85.95p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$965.70 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$1,031.40

Best NBN plan for upload speed (NBN 100/40)

Upload speed is important for live streaming, online content creation and sending large files over the internet. There are a limited number of providers who offer NBN 100/40 plans, but Exetel easily gets our recommendation if you’re looking for a plan with strong upload speeds. The internet service provider was the fastest by a long shot in the latest ACCC data in regard to upload speed, so you should achieve (or get incredibly close to) the advertised upload speed of 34Mbps.

Cost breakdown : AU$74.99p/m (first 6 months, then AU$88.99p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$983.88 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$1,067.88

Superloop logo

Best NBN plan for power users (NBN 1000)

Superloop gets our recommendation because it’s one of the cheapest NBN 1000 plans on the market, and it increased its typical evening speed up to a staggering 811Mbps this month (up from 700Mbps since February) making it now the fastest NBN provider in Australia. And yet, you’ll continue to pay the low price of AU$99 a month for your first six months on the service, before the cost increases to AU$109 each month ongoing. Superloop is fantastic because it offers speeds that are now faster than Telstra, while being as much as AU$71 cheaper a month. Superloop’s NBN 1000 plan is an absolute no-brainer for power users.

Cost breakdown : AU$99p/m (first 6 months, then AU$109p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$1,248 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$1,308

Which is the best NBN provider?

Best NBN provider this month– Exetel

Best NBN provider this month – Exetel

Exetel has reclaimed its title of best NBN provider this month due to it continuing to offer competitive plans, extra useful features and solid results in official ACCC performance reports. While Exetel isn't the cheapest provider on any speed tier, its prices are always below the national average, even after any introductory discounts.

When you factor in the telco also offers Speed Boost days, which let you temporarily boost the speed of your service to the next available tier, those prices begin to look even more attractive. Official data collected by the ACCC has also found Exetel – on the whole – over delivers on speed, meaning you really do get plenty of bang for your buck.

The only immediate downside to Exetel's NBN plans is on the NBN 1000 tier, where it only advertises a typical evening speed figure of 400Mbps. This is well below the speeds offered by the majority of other providers, so in this instance, we would recommend its parent company, Superloop . Superloop's current claim of 811Mbps is the second-fastest, yet its plan is one of the cheapest currently available.

Best NBN plans: major telcos

When looking at NBN plans, you’ll notice that the three major telcos tend to have the more expensive options out there – particularly Telstra and Optus. The benefits of going with Telstra, Optus or TPG for your NBN plan is that you can feel confident you’ll get a reliable, high-performing service, as has been continuously shown in the ACCC’s reporting.

Another benefit to signing up with Telstra or Optus is that these providers often throw in perks and optional add-ons, such as a modem with 4G backup, free trials of streaming services or plans that are optimised for gaming. TPG doesn’t have these optional extras, but it’s the cheapest option of the big three with good value plans.

If you’re looking for an NBN plan from Telstra, Optus or TPG these are our plan recommendations:

Optus logo

Best Optus NBN plan

Optus is usually a more affordable alternative to Telstra, but while we have seen some attractive deals from the provider in previous months, the current offering isn't anything too special, if we're being totally honest. For a time, you could get yourself a 100Mbps NBN plan for the same cost as a 50Mbps, which at the time made great financial sense. However, that deal appears to have finished now, with Optus reverting to its usual pricing structure of offering up to AU$30 off per month for six months.

Taking this into account, we've selected the NBN 1000 plan as it does see you saving AU$180 over the first six months of the service, thanks to the aforementioned AU$30p/m saving. It does still make the service relatively expensive compared to the national average of AU$127p/m, but it does now advertise a maximum evening speed of 780Mbps, which is a great improvement. Just note that you'll need to remain connected to Optus for 36 months in order to get the modem with 4G backup for free, otherwise you'll need to pay some high early exit fees.

Cost breakdown : AU$119p/m (first 6 months, then AU$149p/m)

Total cost for first year : AU$1,608 | Yearly cost after discount : AU$1,788

TGP logo with purple letters

Best TPG NBN plan

TPG has the most affordable NBN plans among the major providers and on top of those more affordable prices, the telco is currently offering one month of service for free, in addition to any six month introductory discounts (note that only the NBN 50 plan currently has this discount). With this in mind, we would also recommend its NBN 1000 plan, as it's currently the cheapest in Australia. Typical evening speeds are respectable at 671Mbps – not the fastest, but certainly not the slowest – and it's the only provider to charge less than AU$1,200 in your first year. Note that unlike Telstra and Optus, TPG’s modem doesn’t have 4G backup.

Cost breakdown : AU$104.99p/m (first month free) (modem fees may apply)

Total cost for first year : AU$1,154.89 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,259.88

Telstra logo

Best Telstra NBN plan

Telstra’s NBN plans are the most expensive in the market, and it’s hard to justify the price when there are cheaper choices out there that offer a similar service. However, Telstra’s NBN plans benefit from a modem with 4G backup and the ability to prioritise online traffic.

Telstra is currently offering a six month introductory discount on just its NBN 100 plan, which is why we've selected it here. You can also currently take advantage of free trials to the likes of Spotify Premium, Binge, Flash, Kayo Sports, Foxtel Now and Xbox Game Pass, although only if you're new to any of those services.

We’ve chosen Telstra’s NBN 100 plan this month because of the aforementioned discount, and because it's 'only' AU$10 more each month than the slower 50Mbps plan after that discount. But at AU$110p/m, it really is the most expensive by a long way. If you break up with Telstra within the first 24 months, return the modem or pay a AU$200 non-return fee.

Cost breakdown : AU$100p/m (first 6 months, then AU$110p/m)

Total cost for first year: AU$1,260 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,320

How we judge the best NBN plans

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

To select our picks for the best NBN plans, our experts consider and weigh the following key aspects for fixed-line NBN plans:

Speed : Each speed tier indicates the maximum speed available, for example, an NBN 50 plan is able to reach download speeds of 50Mbps. However, not every provider will be able to reach the maximum speed available during the busiest evening hours, which fall between 7–11pm. NBN providers are required to report their typical evening speeds, so we look for plans that have a maxed-out typical evening speed. No provider reaches the theoretical maximum of 1,000Mbps in the NBN 1000 tier, so in this instance, we consider the total claimed Mbps against price to weigh relative value.

Price : Price is an important factor in our decision making. We look for plans that are below, or at least on par with, the average monthly price in their respective speed tier. Price ultimately has to be weighed up against speed, as there’s no use paying for a cheap NBN plan that offers slower-than-average speed. Most NBN providers also offer an initial discount period (typically 6 months) to encourage you to sign up, so we look for competitive offers when making our choices. The ongoing price must also remain reasonable to get our recommendation.

Data allowance : The majority of fixed-line NBN plans offer unlimited data, so in all but exceptional cases, we only recommend plans with an unlimited data allowance.

Performance : The ACCC monitors the performance of some of the top NBN providers in Australia, so we always take this data into account when making our recommendations. If the ACCC doesn’t monitor a particular internet provider, we also look at feedback provided by real users on sites such as Whirlpool .

Perks : We consider perks as nice to have, but they carry less weight compared to other factors in our decision making. Some examples of perks include Australian-based customer support, or the ability to include a home phone service. Other perks can enhance the performance of your service, such as the ability to bump your plan’s regular speed up to the next available tier on five days of your choosing – a feature offered by Exetel and Superloop .

What is the NBN?

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is Australia’s upgraded internet and phone infrastructure. It’s a government initiative that was first announced more than 10 years ago, and after several changes to the rollout plan, it’s officially been declared complete (though upgrades are still ongoing).

The NBN uses optical fibre and other technology types to get faster, stable internet into homes across Australia, taking the place of copper wires and cable broadband.

Understanding NBN speeds: which is right for you?

Choosing an NBN speed tier is arguably the most important decision you’ll make when it comes to getting internet. To figure out which is right for you, factor in how many people will be using the internet in your household and what their usage is like. Here, we’ve broken down each speed tier, and what they get you.

Your connection type can also limit what speed tiers you can access – click here to learn more about NBN connection types , or head to the NBN Co’s website to check what connection is available at your address .

NBN 12 (Basic I): 12Mbps download | 1Mbps upload | Any connection type | 1 user | Suited for a one-person household for browsing the internet, sending emails and watching YouTube videos at 1080p – though this tier is not recommended for lots of streaming.

NBN 25 (Basic II): 25Mbps download | 5Mbps upload | Any connection type | 1-2 users | For one or two people who want to browse the web at the same time, stream music and stream video in 1080p.

NBN 50 (Standard): 50Mbps download | 20Mbps upload | Any connection type | 2-4 users | Allows multiple users to stream in high definition and play games online, and crucially for some, it’s higher uploads are well-suited to working from home – particularly if you need to video chat.

NBN 100 (Fast): 100Mbps download | 20Mbps upload | Any connection type | 5+ users | Suitable for streaming video in 4K, downloading large files and having multiple devices online at the same time.

NBN 250 (Superfast): 250Mbps download | 25Mbps upload | FTTP, HFC connections | 5+ users | Gives you absurdly fast speeds that will let multiple people stream in 4K at the same time, and allow faster downloads of large files such as games and OS updates.

NBN 1000 (Ultrafast): 1000Mbps download | 50Mbps upload | FTTP, HFC connections | 5+ users | Fastest speed tier you can get, but note that there’s considerable difference between the typical evening speeds offered by the few telcos that offer this tier, with the lowest being 245Mbps and the highest reaching 700Mbps (the latter coming from Telstra).

What does 'typical evening speed' mean?

A typical evening speed is the average download speed you can expect on a plan during the peak busy hours of 7pm-11pm. Each telco will quote a typical evening speed on its plans, and this number can vary within the same speed tier, so be sure to check and compare.

In 2021, more internet providers started to claim a maximum typical evening speed, and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has found several ISPs are even delivering above that maximum number.

With so many providers offering a fast service, factoring in typical evening speeds isn’t as important as it used to be, but you should still keep an eye out for low numbers. Any NBN provider quoting close to the tier’s top-rated speed is fine, but consider it a big red flag if it’s significantly lower than the norm.

What are NBN connection types?

First, to figure out what connection type you have, check your address on the NBN Co website . Your connection type is good to know, as not every NBN plan is supported by every connection, so it’s an easy first step in narrowing down your choices.

While the NBN is made up of a multi-technology mix, it’s important to know that you don’t have a choice in what technology is available to you. Different connection types have been built in different areas, so it’s entirely dependent on where you live. Below, we lay out the connection types across the network, and what they mean.

Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) : FTTP is a fibre-optic line that runs directly to your home, and therefore is the best type of connection you can have. It requires a device to be installed in your home, and is what was originally intended for every household in Australia when the NBN was first announced.

Fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) : An FTTB connection is most commonly used for connecting apartment blocks and similar buildings to the NBN. In this instance, a fibre-optic line runs to the building’s communications room, and existing technology such as copper wiring is used to connect each apartment from there.

Hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) : An HFC connection uses existing pay TV (Foxtel) or cable network as the final connection to households. The HFC line will run from your home to the nearest available fibre node.

Fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) : FTTC is when the fibre-optic cable extends a little closer to your home by connecting to a distribution unit located outside on the street. From there, it uses the copper phone line to run the last leg into your home.

Fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) : The majority of Australian households – around 4.7 million – are using FTTN technology. This connection type uses existing copper phone wire to make the final connection to the home from a central node in your neighbourhood. The distance of your home to the node will affect the average speeds you can reach, so if your home is more than 700m from the node, it’s not advisable to choose an NBN 100 plan.

Fixed Wireless : Fixed Wireless connections are used to reach regional and remote areas. Homes in these areas will access the NBN from a transmission tower through an antenna installed on their roof.

Sky Muster satellite : The NBN’s Sky Muster satellite technology is also used to reach regional and remote communities. It requires a satellite dish to be installed on the premises, to which the NBN is received through satellite.

TL;DR : Check your address on the NBN Co website to find out what connection you have. It’s important to know because not every NBN plan is supported by every connection type.

How much should my NBN plan cost?

Once you know what type of connection you have and what speed you want, you can find a plan that suits you at the right price.

There’s good news for those who just want to surf the web casually – for that kind of use, it doesn’t matter what ISP you go with. Recent research by the ACCC has shown that your choice of provider won’t impact website browsing performance, so you can go with a cheap NBN plan if this is all you’re after.

But if you need to do more with your internet, you might want to consider some of the fastest NBN plans . These will cost you more per month, but they’ll allow you to download and upload large files faster, stream comfortably in 4K and game online with minimal lag.

When looking at NBN plan prices, be sure to suss out what internet deals are available too. It’s extremely common for ISPs to offer a discount for your first six months on their service, and it’s usually about AU$15 off each month.

The telcos will also try and tempt you up to faster plans with bigger discounts – up to AU$40 off each month for six months in some cases – so consider taking advantage of these options too.

There’s one last thing to mention when it comes to price, and that’s contracts. The vast majority of NBN plans come with no lock-in contracts, so you’re free to leave anytime (though some telcos will require you to pay out the remaining cost of your modem).

NBN plans on a contract will typically last between six and 12 months, and the benefit here is usually in reducing upfront fee costs (such as waiving the set up fee or throwing in a free modem).

While those benefits may seem tempting, weigh up those perks before committing to a contract. If you decide to leave early, you’ll likely still need to pay for each month you have remaining.

TL;DR : If you just want to browse the internet, a cheap NBN plan from a smaller NBN provider will do you just fine. For those that want to stream in 4K and game online, look for a fast NBN plan at a competitive price. Be sure to take advantage of six month discounts offered to new customers, and weigh up whether a contract or no-lock in term is best for you.

What’s the best NBN provider for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and other cities?

Many people wonder whether there’s a 'best' NBN provider for their particular city. Over the last couple of years, we've seen rising interest in plans based on location, such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth – so does your locale really matter when selecting an ISP?

The answer is tricky. If you live on the east coast of Australia, the answer is generally no, your location won’t matter when choosing a provider. If you live in South Australia, the Northern Territory or Western Australia, you may experience some benefit from choosing an ISP that’s headquartered (or at least has a local presence) in your state.

This is because of the way traffic flows to and from the user to the wider internet. All providers effectively act as a middle man in between users and the internet, routing all transmitted and received data through their own infrastructure. Providers’ direct physical connections to the internet are known as “points of interconnect” (POI), and all user internet traffic is routed through a PIO. There are 121 PIOs across Australia , but because connecting to a POI requires physical hardware, most service providers only use a smaller subset of these.

Because they’re the critical link in the user-to-internet chain, the physical location of your provider’s nearest PIO to you can play a large role in factors like latency and ping time. If your POI is thousands of kilometres away from your home, this is naturally going to result in a bigger delay in data flowing in both directions.

Latency and ping time matter most when it comes to tasks that work in real time – so things such as video calling and online gaming. An ACCC report released in April 2023 revealed that online gamers living in NSW and the ACT experience much lower latency on average compared to the rest of the country, and that’s because most game servers located in Australia are housed in Sydney.

While your internet provider of choice won’t be able to resolve all issues related to latency and ping time, signing up with a locally-based provider (or one that’s at least connected to a local POI) can help reduce these factors. For example, Pentanet is an ISP based in Western Australia that’s often spoken of highly by gamers living in the state.

There’s no one-stop-shop for checking if an NBN provider is connected to your closest POI, but there’s a few steps you can take. First, check if the provider has a POI lookup tool – Aussie Broadband and Superloop both offer this, for example. If the ISP you’re looking at doesn’t offer an official way to check, then you’ll have to head to a website such as Whirlpool and do some digging yourself. Finally, if Whirlpool doesn’t have what you’re looking for, your best bet is to email the internet provider directly.

How does switching NBN providers work?

So you’ve done your research and found the NBN provider you want to switch to, what’s next?

Switching NBN providers is usually fairly seamless – your new ISP should take care of the whole process, including informing your current ISP of the change. If you’ve requested a modem/router with your switch, your new ISP will usually wait until that arrives to connect you – your existing service will continue to work as usual in the meantime.

If you’re keeping your current modem/router, then the switch can often happen within 24-48 hours, and will likely require you to change some of your router settings, such as username and password.

There’s one important step to do before finally switching providers, and that is to check the fine print of your current ISP.

If you are currently on a contract with your internet provider, you’ll likely face an exit fee or be required to payout the remaining months on your plan. If this is you, we’d highly recommend reconsidering breaking the contract unless absolutely necessary.

However, even if you’re on a month-to-month plan instead of a contract, you could still face a cancellation fee. For example, TPG requires its users to give a 30-day notice before cancellation, and if this isn’t done, you’ll need to payout the remaining days of the month.

If you find that your current ISP requires you to give notice of cancellation, we’d recommend scheduling the switch with your new NBN provider, so you can avoid any surprise exit fees.

How do I connect to the NBN?

If you’re not sure whether you can connect to the NBN yet, check your address on the NBN Co website. Most Australians do have access to the NBN, and if you find your home is NBN-ready, all you need to do is select an NBN plan and sign up. Then you can either use a BYO modem or one provided by your telco of choice to connect to Wi-Fi.

If you find that your home isn’t connected to the NBN, you’ll need to contact NBN Co and organise installation.

Do I need a new modem/router for the NBN?

For a modem/router to connect to the NBN, it needs to have a VDSL port, so you will need to upgrade if your current hardware is missing this port. While most plans will give you the option of bringing your own device for the connection, you’ll also have the ability to buy one directly from your NBN provider.

For the everyday internet connection, these modem/routers will suffice for your connection, though you may want to consider buying better hardware if you’ve signed up for a fast NBN plan – just ensure that it’s compatible.

What is a good data amount for my NBN plan?

The majority of NBN plans available today come with unlimited data, with prices starting at AU$50 a month for an unlimited data plan. With an unlimited data plan, you won’t have to worry about monthly data caps, and we’d argue that they’re better value for money when factoring in price per gigabyte.

Which is the cheapest NBN provider?

The provider with the cheapest NBN plan overall is Spintel, which offers an NBN 12 plan for AU$49.95 a month. If you’re looking for affordable internet, head over to our cheap NBN plans page, where we’ve compared the cheapest plans from each speed tier.

Sometimes finding a great deal on your NBN home internet plan can be challenging, especially if you want to save some extra pennies. With expected increases coming to internet bills across Australia come July 2 thanks to NBN Co's new wholesale pricing structure , some homes and businesses may be feeling a pinch. But thankfully for you and your wallet, mid-year sales are just around the corner, meaning some of the best NBN plans are getting discounted, giving you just enough time to lock in a bargain price before the inevitable hike.

With prices slashed across its top-tier plans, Aussie Broadband is offering new and returning customers an introductory rate over the first 12 months , which is pretty incredible. With maximum savings of AU$240 on the table, it's now possible to sign up for a well-known premium ISP, save money and achieve fast speeds. We recently saw the telco discount top-tier plans two months ago , so with the discounts continuing throughout EOFY sales and beyond, it could be a great time to switch or sign up for one of the country's better-rated telcos.

Among the reduced plans, ABB's NBN 100 plan is a standout for us. By using the code EOFY120 , you can score AU$10 off each month for the first year of your plan — that's AU$120 — before the ongoing costs increase. What's more, the discounted price of just AU$85p/m is well under the average for the speed tier, which is AU$90.43p/m based on the NBN providers we monitor. The cost, however, is near-equivalent to several NBN 50 plans, so this deal will provide you with more speed for less. But you better act fast, as this offer is only available until 30 June 2024 (a.k.a. the end of the financial year).

Aussie Broadband | NBN 100 | Unlimited Data | No lock-in contract | AU$85p/m using code EOFY120

Aussie Broadband | NBN 100 | Unlimited Data | No lock-in contract | AU$85p/m using code EOFY120 (for 12 months, then AU$95p/m)

Aussie Broadband's Fast NBN 100 plan advertises 98Mbps download speeds and 16Mbps uploads during the busy evening hours of 7pm to 11pm. With savings of AU$120 over the first year before the price increases, this plan offers great value compared to others on this speed tier. The telco has also received some positive reviews online, with customers praising the great customer service.

Total minimum cost: AU$85 | Total cost of first 12 months: AU$1,020 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,140

Typically known for its heftier price tags across its NBN plans, Aussie Broadband's latest promo is pretty stellar to us as it offers an introductory rate over the first 12 months. While first-year discounts are by no means rare, here at Tom's Guide we see more price cuts occur over the first six months, rather than the full year. So if you're looking to get more bang from your buck over the first year of your NBN plan, then a 12-month discount may be right up your alley.

It's worth noting that ABB's plan doesn't achieve the theoretical maximums of this speed tier. While it only advertises 98Mbps downloads, this rather minor discrepancy is unlikely to make any real-world difference. But if you feel you require the full triple-digit speeds, you may want to consider some of the best NBN 100 plans instead.

If you don't have a compatible modem, you'll need to add one to your plan. It'll cost you AU$179 upfront for a Netcomm NF20Mesh starter unit plus shipping. If you want to set up a mesh Wi-Fi system, you can also select the Netcomm NF20Mesh large pack, which comes with two satellite extenders for AU$429 upfront plus shipping.

Aussie Broadband does, however, offer a range of plans, spanning from NBN 12 to NBN 1,000. Plus, it's the only telco we've found that offers a 75Mbps plan, so if you find yourself not needing the full 98Mbps on offer, you can always switch to 75Mbps or lower after your first 12 months are up. If you're not in the market for an NBN 100 plan, you can check out Aussie Broadband's other NBN options in the widget below.

Telstra Is Changing Its NBN Prices Very Soon, Here’s What You’ll Be Paying

Chris Neill Avatar

If you’re currently connected to one of Telstra’s NBN plans , you might be seeing a price change shortly. The provider has recently announced that it’s refreshing the prices for its range of NBN plans from July 1, with some seeing an increase while others are getting a price drop. These new prices will apply to new and existing Telstra customers.

When announcing these price changes , Telstra noted these were a knock-on from the NBN Co changing up its wholesale internet costs:

“NBN co is increasing the price they charge us for wholesale internet and this is an important factor for the changes we’re making. As a business, we’re constantly striving to balance the needs of our customers whilst ensuring we remain financially sustainable. The price changes also mean we can keep investing in our network, products and services while responding to increased data usage.”

Here’s what Telstra’s new NBN prices look like, and how a few of them compare with what other internet providers are offering.

Table of contents

Telstra’s new nbn prices, how does telstra’s nbn 50 plan compare, how does telstra’s nbn 1000 plan compare.

As you can see in the table above, Telstra’s faster NBN plans will be getting a price drop, while the slower connections will be receiving a slight increase. In most cases, these price changes sit in the range of $4 to $5 per month. The biggest price change comes from Telstra’s NBN 1000 plan, which is dropping $20 per month.

The only connection that won’t be seeing any form of change is Telstra’s NBN 100 plan , which will be sticking to a $110 per month price point.

Even before the price increase, Telstra’s NBN 50 plan was nowhere near being the cheapest option, with the average full-price cost for a plan in this tier ranging from $80 to $85 per month.

So what are your options for a cheap NBN 50 plan?

Kogan currently has the cheapest pick of the lot, with an introductory deal that’ll have you paying $58.90 per month for the first three months of your connection. After that discount period ends you’ll be paying $68.90 per month, which is the cheapest full-price cost for an NBN 50 plan. You’ll need to be quick, because this deal is only available until June 2.

After that, you have Tangerine which is offering its NBN 50 plan for $59.90 per month for the first six months. After that, you’ll be paying $79.90 per month.

While the initial price of Exetel’s plan is a hair more expensive than what Tangerine is offering, it has a cheaper full price. You’ll pay $60.99 per month for the first six months you’re with Exetel, and then $78.99 per month after that.

Exetel also comes with the added perk of five daily speed boosts every month. When you activate one of these boosts, your connection speed will bump up to that of Exetel’s NBN 100 plan (100Mbps). Unused speed boosts will rollover into a bank, to a max of 30 days.

Kogan, Tangerine and Exetel are all reporting typical evening speeds of 50Mbps.

Again, even with this price change, Telstra’s NBN 1000 plan isn’t the cheapest option available.

Southern Phone currently has the cheapest NBN 1000 plan going, with an introductory price of $95 per month. This discounted cost will last for the first six months of your connection before increasing to $105 per month, which still sits on the cheaper end of the NBN 1000 pricing scale. Southern Phone is reporting typical evening speeds of 650Mbps.

The next cheapest plan comes from Swoop , which is offering its NBN 1000 plan for $99 per month. What makes this plan worthwhile is that Swoop is currently reporting typical evening speeds of 975Mbps, making it the fastest NBN 1000 connection on offer.

However, once this discount period ends, the price of Swoop’s plan makes a sharp price increase to $139 per month.

If you want a fast NBN 1000 plan that’s still relatively cheap, then Superloop is worth considering. The internet provider is also running an introductory offer where you’ll pay $99 per month for the first six months of your plan. However, when this discount period ends you’ll only be paying $109 per month.

Superloop is currently reporting typical download speeds of 811Mbps, making it the second fastest NBN 1000 plan on offer.

TPG business NBN plans review

TPG business NBN plans are only offered on a few key speed tiers but they do include some extras worth considering.

TPG Mobile Review - TPG Logo

TPG business internet ticks most of the right boxes when it comes to NBN speed tier choices, even if it starts with the bare-bolts NBN 12 and skips over the more versatile entry-level NBN 25. This means TPG’s business NBN plans are relegated to NBN 12, NBN 50 and NBN 100 speed tiers only, which may be only fast enough for smaller businesses.

Note that TPG offers multiple versions of each plan per speed tier, wherein you can opt for an 18-month contract and a cheaper $30 upfront fee for a PAYG landline phone service and NBN modem . Alternatively, go month-to-month for the same monthly fee but a steeper $129.95 upfront cost. You can also opt to pay more to bundle local and national phone calls (but no mobile numbers).

TPG business NBN plans value for money

A handful of contracted or no-contract options on a few speed tiers, albeit without the best pricing.

It wasn’t so long ago that TPG was offering a truly bare-bolts NBN 12 plan with 100GB of data but that’s been replaced with an unlimited-data variant. Still, we wouldn’t recommend that for any business unless they have the most basic of internet needs.

If that is your business, though, the true bare-bolts plan is the TPG NBN 12 Unlimited Plan, which has 12Mbps self-reported typical and comes with unlimited data. (Note that speeds for all TPG business NBN plans are confirmed post-activation for FTTB, FTTN and FTTC businesses).

In terms of the business NBN plans in our comparison engine, TPG is peerless with no competition for this speed tier.

From here, TPG strangely skips the NBN 25 speed tier and opts, instead, to offer plans in the most popular NBN 50 field. The NBN 50 XL Business Bundle comes with 50Mbps self-reported typical business hours download speeds.

In our comparison engine, there are cheaper alternatives from More Telecom, Aussie Broadband, Optus, iiNet, Vodafone and Exetel, granted not all of these providers offer an NBN modem and PAYG phone service. For comparison, check out the daily updating list of popular business NBN 50 plans below.

Finally, TPG’s NBN 100 XL Business Bundle has four variants, all of which have respectable 90Mbps business-hours download speeds and are inclusive of a landline phone service as well as an NBN modem.

Optus, Vodafone, More Telecom, Aussie Broadband and Exetel offer more competitive pricing and faster download speeds (except for Vodafone, which offers the same 90Mbps) as far as our the business plans in our comparison engine go. You should expect to see some or all of these alternatives in the daily updating list of popular business NBN 100 plans below.

Want to know which NBN providers scored top marks in our analysis? Follow the link below to find the best providers for value, speed and support in Australia.

Residential NBN plans are advertised in terms of a provider’s self-reported typical evening download speeds, whereas business NBN plans are marketed with a provider’s self-reported typical business-hours download speeds. While these speeds are increasingly the same, the time of day is different. For residential plans, the evening speeds relate to between 7:00pm and 11:00pm nightly, whereas business hours are 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.

The other thing to note is sometimes the NBN technology type that services your business address may impact your potential to reach the advertised speeds. Telstra, for instance, estimates expected download and upload speeds to your inputted business address prior to sign-up, whereas iiNet confirms Fibre-to-the-Building, Fibre-to-the-Curb and Fibre-to-the-Node speeds, but only once a connection is active.

TPG non-NBN business internet

TPG has other business internet plans, including NBN Enterprise Ethernet for large business and government organisations. Outside of NBN services, TPG also offers business customers fibre internet plans built on 250Mbps, 400Mbps and 1000Mbps packages. For businesses that want to go all out, TPG Dark Fibre can reach speeds of up to 10Gbps.

For other business-focused data services, TPG also offers e-Line, e-LAN, IP VPN and Wavelength. There are also SIP Voice, Inbound Voice, ISDN PRI and BRI as well as BizPhone products for businesses seeking bolstered landline phone support. TPG also offers several cloud services.

TPG business NBN features and perks

Whichever version of a TPG business NBN plan you buy per speed tier, you’ll get a few key inclusions. For starters, there’s a preconfigured NBN modem—either the TP-Link Archer VR1600v modem-router, Huawei HG658 modem-router or Huawei HG659 modem-router —which stops you from having to source your own and streamlines tech support if things go wrong. TPG business NBN plans also come with a static IP address , which is a great included extra for businesses that want to take advantage of virtual private network (VPN) connections , remote access configurations, server hosting and, compared to typical dynamic IP addresses, more reliable communication.

For the cheaper plan options per speed tier, you’ll also get a PAYG landline phone service, which can be upgraded to include unlimited calls to local and standard calls to national numbers. You can also pay extra to have this phone service include unlimited calls to Australian mobile numbers.

TPG business NBN customer support

If you follow the information in the critical information summary, you may be led down the garden path for attempting to contact TPG support via non-business ways. This means you’re competing with residential users seeking support via shared contact touchstones. You can reach TPG business support via phone by dialling 13 42 02 and following the prompts, which is available Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 6:00pm based on Sydney local times.

Alternatively, you can email customer service at [email protected] for basic enquiries or via the [email protected] email address for tech support, but these are not business-specific email addresses. TPG can also be reached via social media on Twitter or Facebook, plus there’s also a forum for self-paced troubleshooting.

How to sign up for TPG NBN business plans

Click the ‘Go’ button next to the TPG business NBN plan you like the look of from the list below. You should now be on the business portion of the TPG website. Enter your address at the top of the page to confirm TPG services your area, then select your address from the dropdown menu. Confirm the correct selections for plan type, contract length and the specific plan, then follow the prompts after hitting the ‘Buy now’ button at the bottom of the page.

iiNet launches affordable Ultra Broadband plans in regional Victoria

Posted by Rachel Bollerman 04/06/2024

iiNet has launched its Ultra Broadband cable internet plan across regional Victoria, with a cut-throat new customer discount that can save you up to $420 off the standard price in your first 12 months.

The plan is available to new connections in select regional Victorian centres including Geelong, Mildura, Canberra and Ballarat and is designed to compete directly with the NBN.

Here’s a breakdown of the new plan:

  • Monthly cost: $54.99 for the first 12 months (then $89.99 ongoing)
  • Speed: Estimated typical evening speeds of 90 megabits per second (Mbps)
  • Savings: $35 off per month for the first year, totaling $420 in savings

The plan includes unlimited data, a dual-band Wi-Fi modem, and comes with an added bonus of a no lock-in contract.

iiNet’s Ultra Broadband plan offers speeds comparable to NBN 100, but at a competitive price for your first 12 months. NBN 100 plans typically retail for around $80 – $120 per month, depending on your choice of telco.

iiNet’s own NBN 100 plan costs $89.99 per month for unlimited data, although new customers can score a $10 per month discount for their first six months. This plan comes with a slightly faster typical evening download speed of 97 Mbps, and is much more widely available than Ultra Broadband or cable.

Amidst the cost of living crisis and with data downloads increasing by 30% each year, the plan aims to alleviate financial stress for Australians in need of a fast, unlimited home internet solution at a more affordable price.

The competitive pricing of iiNet’s Ultra Broadband plan is made possible through the use of Vision Network infrastructure.

Vision Network, owned by TPG Telecom, is Australia’s largest non-NBN wholesale broadband network, connecting 400,000 households to its cable network. TPG’s Vision Network uses high-speed fibre optic cables to connect your home, offering a fast and reliable alternative to NBN.

iiNet has specifically tailored this new plan for select regional Victorian centres as these areas give customers more choice of broadband products, and may provide a more reliable alternative to NBN.

The launch comes after Telstra announced its NBN plans will increase by up to $5 per month from July 1. Telstra’s NBN plans currently begin at $85 per month for NBN 25 speeds, with NBN 100 plans priced at $110 monthly.

Telstra’s changing NBN prices again from 1 July, says it’s complicated

business plans nbn

Are we re-living 2023 all over again?

The gist of changes for Telstra's NBN plans goes something like this: some prices are going up, some are coming down, others stay the same.

Lower speeds are getting more expensive, faster speeds are becoming a little bit cheaper in comparison.

Here's a quick look at what these changes are:

The interesting bit here is just how expensive NBN 50 has become, especially stacked against NBN 100. There's now only a $5 difference between the two, but on NBN 100 you get double the download speeds.

While NBN 50's popularity has been on the decline, it's still used by 44% of Aussies. It's also the speed tier most impacted.

Optus will also be hiking up the prices of its NBN 25 and NBN 50 plans by $4 to $5 a month from July 8.

NBN 25 will cost $79 a month and NBN 50 will cost $89 a month.

Didn't Telstra and other providers change their prices just a few months ago?

Yep, you're not wrong.

Telstra , along with a bunch of other internet providers, made a slew of changes based on the speed tier.

The majority of moves happened between August and December 2023.

For Telstra, it was October 2023.

Here's a look at what last year's price moves looked like:

"As a business, we're constantly striving to balance the needs of our customers whilst ensuring we remain financially sustainable," a Telstra spokesperson told Finder.

NBN Co is increasing the price they charge us for wholesale internet and this is an important factor for the changes we're making, along with our ability to keep investing in our network, products and services while responding to increased data usage.

"This includes 24/7 network monitoring to help protect against scams, 4G backup to help keep you connected in an outage and support from our local teams when you need us."

It all started when...

After a lot of back and forth, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission finally gave NBN the green light for its new pricing model.

You can read all about it in our news from last year but the new pricing structure essentially favours higher speeds.

But that was a change in wholesale prices for last year. This time, it's based on NBN's pricing for FY25.

Earlier this year , NBN explained its thought process on proposed changes based on how household needs are evolving.

The average household now consumes 443 gigabytes per month across 22 internet-connected devices. We predict that the average will grow to 33 connected devices by 2026 and 40 by the end of the decade.

That's all well and good, but in this cost-of-living environment, these changes may not work for everyone's budget.

We're also waiting to see how other providers apart from Telstra and Optus respond. We'll keep you updated!

So, what can I do?

Your best option is to shop around and compare NBN plans .

It's good to remember that a lot of the time loyalty doesn't pay. It just makes you pay more than you should.

There are other providers that will offer unlimited data and the same speeds for cheaper. A lot of them are also famous for slinging 6-month sign-up discounts.

Maybe they may not offer as many extra bells and whistles as Telstra or Optus, but if all you care about is speed, they're worth checking out.

Check out our pick of the best NBN plans for this month for a more curated list of options.

Gigabit Internet is the New Competition Ground for ISPs in the Middle East

Get the latest ookla research™.

Several Middle Eastern countries, including Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, and the U.A.E., have emerged as leaders in fiber deployment and adoption. The introduction of gigabit packages and the increase in entry-level speeds have significantly boosted their ranking in the Speedtest Global Index ®  for fixed broadband. This article examines the factors driving performance in these countries, the initiatives of ISPs to enhance indoor performance, and key enablers for wider gigabit internet adoption in the region.

Key Takeaways:

  • According to Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence®, the U.A.E. leads the Middle East in fixed broadband performance in Q1 2024. The U.A.E. achieved a median download speed of 270.91 Mbps and an upload speed of 124.37 Mbps. Meanwhile, Bahrain and Qatar saw significant improvements in download and upload speeds, while the median download speed in Jordan rose rapidly from a small base, surpassing Saudi Arabia by Q1 2024.
  • ISPs are addressing indoor performance bottlenecks with more modern consumer premise equipment (CPE). In-premise connectivity is crucial to guarantee maximum throughput on-premise. That is why ISPs started bundling Wi-Fi 6 compatible CPEs and deploying fiber-to-the-room (FTTR) for ubiquitous gigabit wireless access indoors.
  • Affordability is a barrier to wider gigabit adoption in the Middle East. While geography, level of competition, and government policies all impact fiber deployment, affordability is key to unlocking faster speeds in the region. Making gigabit plans more accessible can help operators boost fiber subscribers and aspiring countries to move up the Speedtest Global Index.

The U.A.E. tops the Middle East in Speedtest Global Index for fixed broadband

The analysis focuses on countries in the Middle East that are leading in fiber coverage, adoption, and speed enhancements, namely Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the U.A.E. These achievements were thanks to significant progress by local ISPs in extending fiber coverage, encouraging migration to higher-speed plans, and making services more affordable. Government support has been vital in accelerating fiber roll-outs to keep pace with the demand for data services and to ensure universal access to high-speed internet as part of national broadband development strategies.

As a result, these countries continue to improve their Speedtest Global Index rankings. For example, the U.A.E rose from 18 th in June 2020 to the second position in March 2024. Jordan jumped from 64 th to 33 rd while Bahrain jumped up 32 places to 63 rd in the Index over the same period. Qatar ’s position fluctuated between 29 and 45, with steady improvements since 2021. Saudi Arabia ’s speed increase rate has been more modest than in other markets, causing a drop in the global ranking by 11 places to 46 th in March 2024. The country is the largest in the group, which makes fiber coverage more limited outside the big cities, while there is a relatively large base of legacy copper connections.

Fixed broadband performance improved as faster entry-level fiber plans and gigabit packages were introduced

According to Speedtest Intelligence , the U.A.E. leads the Gulf region in median download speeds at 270.91 Mbps in Q1 2024, more than double the Q3 2022 figure. This represents the largest speed improvement among the reviewed countries. The turning point came in Q4 2022 when ISPs lifted the minimum broadband package speed from 250 Mbps to 500 Mbps and offered aggressive discounts to encourage upselling to faster fiber packages. The median upload speed also saw notable improvement, reaching 124.37 Mbps in March 2024.

Median Download Speeds for Fixed Broadband, Select Countries in the Middle East Speedtest Intelligence® | Q1 2022-Q1 2024 Median Download Speeds for Fixed Broadband, Select Countries in the Middle East

Bahrain and Qatar also experienced significant and rapid rises in median download speeds, reaching 83.09 Mbps and 135.34 Mbps, respectively. The ISPs in the two countries saw significant improvements in upload speeds too. Users in Qatar saw the biggest jump in median upload speed, tripling from Q1 2022 to Q1 2024 to 115.74 Mbps. In Bahrain, the median upload speed increased by over 2.7x but remained the lowest of the group at 20.70 Mbps.

In Bahrain , the telecoms regulator mandated ISPs to double the speed of entry-level fiber packages in April 2023 while maintaining the same wholesale prices. This immediately impacted the market, with median broadband download speeds jumping from 48.14 Mbps in Q1 2023 to 70.17 Mbps in Q2 2023 (over 40%).

Qatar was the first country in the GCC to offer 10 Gbps consumer broadband packages. However, Ooredoo and Vodafone maintained a relatively low download speed on entry-level tariffs at 100 Mbps. This changed in June 2023, when they raised the minimum speed to 1 Gbps while offering discounts on more expensive fiber packages. These initiatives resulted in a step change in download speeds, increasing by 41% in Q1 2024 compared to Q2 2023.

Jordan began ramping up its fiber infrastructure in 2013-2014, with strong take-up since 2019 driven by increased competition, extended coverage outside the capital, and rising demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The launch of Fibertech, a fiber wholesale company, in 2019 significantly boosted service competition and led to more accessible and affordable fiber services for consumers. Fibertech, set up as a joint venture between ISP Umniah and Jordan Electricity Company, covered 1.2 Million households by July 2023 and planned to reach 1.4 million premises , 70% of Jordan’s households, by the end of that year.

Fiber overtook fixed wireless access (FWA) and ADSL connections in Q2 2021 and represented 56% of fixed broadband connections by the end of 2022. Fiber maintained its upward trajectory, capturing 64% of the market in 3Q 2023 with 513,744 active connections according to the last reported data from the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC)). Local ISPs have also been increasing the speed of entry-level plans and offering gigabit packages. For example, Orange Jordan introduced 2 Gbps and 10 Gbps plans in May 2023 .  This accelerated fiber take-up boosted the median speeds for both download and upload, reaching 130.41 Mbps and 108.08 Mbps, respectively, in Q1 2024. Notably, Jordan doubled its median upload speed in two years, narrowing the gap with its median download speed.

In Saudi Arabia , stc led the way by increasing the minimum download speed from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps in the summer of 2022. Mobily followed suit in 2023 by doubling the speed of its entry-level package and introducing a 1 Gbps broadband plan during Q2 2023. Zain initially reserved higher download speeds (ranging from 200 Mbps to 500 Mbps) for customers on 2-year contracts, while those on 12-month contracts received speeds between 100 Mbps and 300 Mbps. However, in 2023, Zain merged its plans into a standard 18-month contract starting at 200 Mbps, with 1 Gbps at the high end. These initiatives began to impact the market in Q2 2023, when the median download speed surpassed 90 Mbps for the first time, reaching 108.95 Mbps by Q1 2024. Upload speeds also saw significant growth, rising to 53.75 Mbps during this period.

Speedtest Intelligence’s Enrichment API allows us to track the adoption and performance of individual fixed broadband technologies and assess their impact on the Saudi market. For example, the fiber share of stc Speedtest samples has been growing – fiber represented 75.4% of Speedtest samples in March 2024, up from 69.9% in Q4 2023. This increased fiber adoption contributed to raising overall fixed broadband performance across download, upload, and latency metrics and widened the performance gap with legacy DSL lines. This result also highlights the potential for further improvement if most samples (and by extension, customers) switch to fiber.

Improving indoor coverage is key to ensuring maximum fiber performance delivery to customers

ISPs in the analyzed countries have rapidly expanded their fiber footprint and migrated customers to faster broadband services, helping to increase the median download speed. However, the last few meters indoors, closer to the end-users, can be a potential bottleneck to achieving maximum throughput. To address this, local ISPs have taken steps such as:

  • Offering upgraded CPEs that support Wi-Fi 6 . The choice of Wi-Fi standards and spectrum bands directly influences indoor connectivity quality, throughput, and network coverage. Our recent analysis found that over one-third of test samples in the Gulf region reported using Wi-Fi 4 to connect to the fixed CPE. More ISPs are now offering Wi-Fi 6 compatible CPEs and including additional mesh Wi-Fi nodes at no extra costs to improve indoor coverage and speed.
  • Deploying fiber-to-the-room (FTTR) . This relatively new technology involves deploying and extending fiber connectivity to each room, usually through transparent cables, to provide ubiquitous gigabit wireless access. ISPs started deploying this technology in East Asia to differentiate their broadband offering and it is now being adopted by ISPs in the Middle East, including Jordan (Umniah and Zain), Qatar (Ooredoo), Saudi Arabia (Salam, stc), and the U.A.E. (Etisalat by e&).

Making gigabit internet more accessible will unlock faster speeds and drive wider adoption

Countries with small landmasses and populations, and high urbanization, such as Singapore, the U.A.E., Hong Kong (SAR), Iceland, and Monaco, top the Global Speedtest Index. While such geographical and demographic characteristics give an advantage to smaller nations as they facilitate the deployment of fiber infrastructure, other factors including market competition, government support, and service affordability are key to driving mass adoption.

Many of the top 10 markets in the Global Speedtest Index have multiple ISPs competing which drives investments in better technology and continuous upgrades to attract customers. A competitive landscape benefits consumers because it helps to keep prices relatively low. It also accelerates increases in median speeds as ISPs tend to offer free speed upgrades to existing customers. For example, in Hong Kong (which had 28 licensed ISPs as of March 2024) and Singapore, gigabit broadband speeds have been available to residential customers since the early 2010s, and ISPs have eliminated sub-1 Gbps plans. As a result, 85% of residential homes in Singapore and 68.0% in Hong Kong have at least 1 Gbps services. Chile, Latin America’s leader in fixed line performance and fourth in the Speedtest Global Index in Q1 2024, has six ISPs with more than 5% market share, all of which are heavily focused on migrating customers to fiber .

Governments in these leading countries have also prioritized strong digital infrastructure development with significant investment in infrastructure. For example, China has pursued a state-coordinated infrastructure deployment program to promote economic development. In France, the government’s “France Très Haut Débit” initiative aimed to provide fiber optic access to all citizens by 2025 through public-private partnerships. The Singaporean government invested S$1 billion to build the infrastructure of its National Broadband Network (NBN) which supported speeds of up to 10 Gbps and reached more than 95% premises in 2013. In February 2023, it announced an additional investment of up to S$100 million to upgrade the NBN to enable more than half a million households to benefit from speeds of up to 10Gbps by 2028.

While the broadband infrastructure in some countries from the Middle East is gigabit internet-ready, the disparity in income and the high price of these packages hinder the adoption rate of high-speed broadband services. For example, a 1 Gbps fiber line in Hong Kong or Singapore could cost as little as $30 per month, and a plan with a similar speed starts at $100 per month in Qatar,  $150 in the U.A.E., $250 in Saudi Arabia, and $345 in Bahrain. This highlights the need to make gigabit plans more affordable if the operators want to boost fiber subscribers and countries aspire to move up the Speedtest Global Index.

As demand for high-speed internet continues to grow, we expect increased adoption of 10 Gbps speeds to support more demanding applications and improve the user experience. Work is underway in some developed markets to build higher-capacity broadband networks to enable new cases and make the infrastructure future-ready. For example, In March 2024, Hong Kong Telecom announced the availability of 50 Gbps lines for residential and business customers. This trend is slowly emerging in the Middle East – Etisalat by E& in the U.A.E and Ooredoo in Qatar announced early experiments with 50G PON technology. We anticipate continued innovation and competition in the region, driving further advancements that will ultimately benefit end-users by delivering faster and more affordable gigabit connectivity options.
