Describing a person or character is difficult for even the most successful authors. It requires a balance of words to make sure they shine through without the language being too heavy. In this article, we’ll look at how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person, share some examples, and talk about different strategies.

1.   Brainstorm Your Ideas

Brainstorming is crucial to any writing process. It’s the process in which you think of ideas for what you’d like to write about. In this case, you’re writing a descriptive paragraph about a person. It’s important to use adjectives to describe the features or characteristics you want to focus on.

One way to come up with ideas for a descriptive paragraph about a person is to go through the five senses. Use the questions below to get some ideas for what you want to highlight about your person.

Appeal to your reader’s senses – smell, taste, sound, sight, and touch

Smell: How does the person smell? Do they wear perfume? Are they doing an activity that would make them have a certain smell?

Taste: Do you associate a certain food with this person? Does it make you think of a specific taste? Can you taste something due to a certain smell they have?

Sound: Do they have a unique voice or laugh? Are they doing an activity that has distinctive sounds?

Sight: What prominent features do they have? For example, think about their dressing style, their smile, or their surroundings. What do you see them doing in your mind when you see a photo of them? What memories do you have of this person? Does this person remind you of something or someone?

Touch: What textures do you see? For example, imagine their skin or clothing. How does it feel if you hug them?

2.   Begin With a Short and Snappy Sentence

Like with any type of writing, you want to hook your reader so that they want to continue reading. In this case, you can use a topic sentence, if appropriate, to introduce your reader to the person. For example:

Or, if you want to be more creative, you can reel them in with a short and snappy sentence about this person. This is called a writing hook . This sentence should focus on a stand-out detail or characteristic about the person you’re describing. For example:

Now, this is the hard part. But, if you’ve brainstormed plenty of ideas and know which ones you want to focus on, it will be easier. Let’s look at some examples to get a better idea of how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person using the prompt “describe a person you admire.”

Comments: This paragraph is pretty typical of most students. It gives lots of visual details of the person and uses a simile or two (“ Her eyes are like the color of honey” and “Her smile shines like the sun” ). While this strategy gets the job done, it’s not very exciting to read. In fact, it can be quite boring!

4.   Edit and Revise

After you write your descriptive paragraph, be sure to read it over. Read it out loud. Read it in a funny voice. Doing this will help you to hear the words and identify which parts do not work or sound awkward.

What is a descriptive essay?

The descriptive essay is a genre of essay that asks the student to describe something—object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation, etc. This genre encourages the student’s ability to create a written account of a particular experience. What is more, this genre allows for a great deal of artistic freedom (the goal of which is to paint an image that is vivid and moving in the mind of the reader).

One might benefit from keeping in mind this simple maxim: If the reader is unable to clearly form an impression of the thing that you are describing, try, try again!

Here are some guidelines for writing a descriptive essay.

• Take time to brainstorm

If your instructor asks you to describe your favorite food, make sure that you jot down some ideas before you begin describing it. • To describe someone’s body or clothing, you might write, “He was a big guy, but carried himself like he wanted to apologize for it. He hunched his shoulders and bent his neck over his phone, and wore gray clothes so he could blend into the walls.”
• Even the general details you’re describing should only be mentioned if they add insight into the person or character’s personality or impression. For example, if their eye color doesn’t hint at any deeper part of them, you don’t have to include it.

Using Figurative Language

Simile: a comparison between two things using “like” or “as.” Ex. “Her baby’s ears were as tiny and delicate as seashells.”

Metaphor: using a word or phrase with an object, action or person that it can’t literally apply to. Ex. “In class, Mrs. Sherman was an actress. She flew around the room and boomed out each story we read, using different voices and facial expression for every character.”

• “I’d known Lulu for years, but I’d never seen her wear a pair of shoes. In the summer, I’d watch the soles of her feet turn black and callused from the asphalt, which baked so hot under the sun it would let off waves of steam. It had to burn, but she just rose up on her tiptoes and laughed.”

Using Sensory Details

Sight: “The lightbulb was incredibly powerful, throwing off a blaze so bright it was almost violet.”

Sound: “The bag crinkled sharply when I opened it.”

Touch: “The wood of the tree was rough, almost biting, scratching her hand when she brushed against the trunk by accident.”

Taste: “The pizza was garlicky and so salty that he finished his whole glass of soda after just one piece.”

Smell: “When they opened the box, the faded, pungent scent of old paper lifted out.”

• For example, you could say, “It was her lucky pencil, the one she always used for tests, and she kept it in a separate section of her backpack for that reason. She sharpened it slowly with her personal handheld sharpener, then carefully swept the shavings into the trash.”

• For example, you could show the importance by writing, “He took his watch off in the bathroom every night, cleaned it gently with a wet tissue, and placed it on a small cloth on his bedside table.”
• For a more direct option, you could write, “The journal had been passed down by her grandmother to her mother and finally to Katie. It was the oldest thing she’d ever owned, and the thing she loved the most.”

Writing a Descriptive Paragraph About a Place

“It wasn’t just that the buildings were tall— they were, they shot straight from the ground into the clouds and seemed to go for miles —but that they were so clean, almost transparent. It was like the towers stretched up so high that they became more air than steel.”

“The beach was empty, but you could tell it usually wasn’t. There was trash everywhere, abandoned towels, tipped over coolers, even a whole umbrella, unfurled, sticking out of a hole in the ground. ”

John was standing over me like a tower, but his laugh was so infectious, I started laughing myself.

John is the same person in each scenario, but we used two different methods. The first was a simple description of John while the second used action verbs and behaviors to describe him. Using this method can be difficult if there is a certain page limit or it is a short essay. If so, you can use creative ways to integrate action verbs in short paragraphs to describe your characters. You can still take your time to reveal their physical and personal traits. Instead of doing it in one paragraph, try it in one or two pages.

And when she is angry, watch out. Those piercing brown eyes are throwing daggers of light, and those long legs are poised in a true fighting stance, like she is ready to go 16 rounds.

Same person – two different writers. See the difference? When you don’t have an entire novel to gradually provide a physical description, you have to get creative with the way in which you do it. You have now “proved” to the reader that Carol has extreme emotional responses and done so in an engaging way. It’s important to give such descriptions if you want to keep your writing interesting and not to be boring. It also helps you to carve your own style and to improve writing skills at all. To describe someone’s appearance, you will often use  adjectives . An adjective is a kind of word that describes a noun (a person, place or thing).

Here are some words and phrases you can use to describe a person’s appearance.

Some of them are synonyms , or words that mean almost or exactly the same thing.

Knowing more than one way of saying something is very helpful when describing people.

Someone’s mannerisms are the way they act or speak. When you speak, do you move your arms a lot?

Do you touch your hair or bite your lip? All these things are mannerisms.

Since mannerisms are usually actions , they are often described by phrases with  verbs (action words).

You can add the person’s name or a pronoun before it (he, she, they…).

For example, “He taps his fingers.”

A person’s character is their personality, who they are on the inside.

When you talk about someone, you might mention what they are like as a person.

Here are some ways to do that.

People’s feelings are always changing. You can be happy one moment, and then hear some bad news and become sad.

You always know how you feel, but it isn’t always easy to tell how someone else is feeling.

You can look at how someone is speaking or even how they’re sitting to understand how they feel.

When you’re not sure how someone feels, you can say they  might be  feeling something.

You can also say someone  looks like  they’re feeling a certain way. These phrases show that you might be wrong.

For example, you can say, “I’m mad” when you’re talking about yourself. But you might say “He looks mad,” when you’re talking about another person.

This makes sense if this person is yelling into his phone with his face red and his fists clenched (all signs that someone could be mad!).

You can use these words to talk about how someone is feeling, how they were feeling before or how they might feel in the future.

We describe people all the time. For example, you might tell your friends what your boss is like.

You might tell your sister what that cute guy you saw looks like.

Even outside of everyday conversations , it’s very useful to know how to describe people.

Descriptions are used a lot in books, in articles and in other kinds of communication in English.

Reading or hearing a description of someone can give you a better idea of what they look like or act like.

Descriptions are also useful in the business world, often crucial to conversations and presentations at work.

Some ways of describing people are polite and respectful.

Take the compliments in this video , for example. A native English speaker drives around town saying nice things to people about the way that they look!

Of course, other ways to describe people can be considered rude.

Use judgment and common sense. Think about how you would feel if you heard someone using the same words to describe you .

If you’re ever stuck trying to think of a different way to say a word, look it up in a thesaurus  like this one.

A thesaurus lists both synonyms and antonyms (words that have an opposite meaning). It’s a great way to discover new words and more ways of describing people.

Another good thesaurus resource is Visual Thesaurus , which is like a thesaurus that’s also a map. It shows you the connections between related words. This is great for helping you choose the very best adjective to describe someone.

A descriptive essay is one which is used in order to describe something. These essays can describe anything from a person or place to an item or idea. The idea of the descriptive essay is to give the author a chance to hone their writing skills by way of description. On top of this, the descriptive essay is a great chance for the author to use their creative skills – the more vivid the description, the more the reader can picture clearly what is being talked about. This means that the writer should employ all their skills to paint an image for the audience.

How To Write A Good Descriptive Essay

Now that we have a good understanding of what a descriptive essay is, we are going to take a look at some handy tips for how to write one and the process that should be followed in order to create a convincing descriptive essay.

Choose A Topic

Any essay requires an engaging topic and the descriptive essay is no exception to this rule. When choosing a topic, you should choose something which you have an interest in as this will make you more passionate about your writing. There are a whole host of things you could write about so let’s take a look at some ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

• Describe a summer holiday.
• Describe your oldest memory.
• Describe a member of your family.

When planning your essay it is important to remember that a descriptive essay should appeal to the senses. When describing your subject you should include how it looks, smells, how things taste, what can be heard and how something feels. It is important to lay out these senses in your essay outline as using these will create a much clearer picture for the reader.

Create Your Essay Outline

An essay outline is used to order your ideas and make rough notes of anything that is to be included in the work. Every essay should be written with the assistance of an essay outline, and it should look something like this:

• Introduction -Include your thesis statement, a hook to grab the attention of the reader (this could be a personal story, anecdote, joke or fact) and a little bit about the purpose of the essay.
• Body 1st paragraph -This section will detail the first point of your essay. In the case of a descriptive essay, you might detail how something looks in the first paragraph. A traditional essay is made up of three body paragraphs and each of these should be outlined too. That being said, there is some leeway when writing an essay and you can write more or less body paragraphs depending on what you need.
• Conclusion -This final part of your essay outline should refer back to the thesis statement and sum up all the ideas which have been presented throughout the essay.
