Welcome Speech in English: Best Samples, Examples & Tips

Why are welcome speeches necessary.

Most of the gatherings and ceremonies are held with a purpose. They are either planned events or spontaneous gatherings. In both cases, it is important to know how to organize such events. We must prepare ourselves to conduct the event properly.

Let us imagine that you are hosting a gathering. You have prepared everything, including food, drinks, decorations, etc., and even set up the stage. However, you forgot one thing – a welcome speech. What happens next? Do you start talking immediately without waiting for everyone to arrive? Of course not!

The same goes for a meeting. How many times did you attend meetings where people didn’t introduce themselves? Or worse, they talked about themselves too much during the meeting. In addition, some speakers talk directly to the audience without introducing themselves. This makes it difficult for the attendees to comprehend the event’s process and connect with its objectives.

So why is a welcome speech in English needed? To begin with, it is necessary to give a brief overview of the topic. Secondly, it helps to provide information about the organization and its history. Thirdly, it allows us to highlight our achievements. And finally, it creates a good impression on guests. Otherwise, they might ask questions like “Where is this event going?”.

Significance of welcome speech

The significance of the welcome speech won’t be apparent without understanding what makes up the history of an event. An event can be defined as a sequence of activities carried out over a period of time. These activities are usually organized into stages, each with a specific purpose. For example, an event may start with opening remarks, followed by a keynote address, and finally concluded with closing remarks. Each stage of an event has a different set of responsibilities.

In the case of a welcoming ceremony, the welcome speech is considered to be one of the most important parts of the whole gathering. In fact, it is the most crucial aspect of the entire event. This is because the welcome speech serves several purposes.

First, it introduces the guests to the host. Second, it provides information regarding the upcoming program. Third, it creates a positive impression among the attendees. Fourth, it helps in creating a sense of unity among the participants. Fifth, it helps in establishing good relations between the hosts and the guests. And finally, it ensures that the guest feels comfortable during the occasion.

Objectives of a Welcome Speech in English

The objective of a welcome speech in English is to introduce yourself and the rest of the attendees at the event. This is done through a short introduction about who you are, what you do, why you’re attending, etc. The following are the objectives of a welcome speech:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Provide Information regarding the event
  • Create a positive impression among attendees
  • Establish good relations between hosts and guests
  • Ensure guests feel comfortable during the event
  • Help build unity among participants
  • Explain the purpose of the meeting/event
  • Set up the agenda for the meeting/event
  • Make introductions
  • Give background info about the organization
  • Highlight achievements (if any)

Welcome Address in English For Students

It’s natural for attendees of any event to expect an introductory speech, which sets the tone for the occasion. A host can easily command attention with an effective welcome. Even the longest speeches have the capacity to hold an audience’s interest when delivered in a catchy and impressive manner.

A short opening speech for a commencement ceremony

To everyone present, good morning. A very warm welcome to our respected faculty, our remarkable parents, and our dear students. Special recognition is due for our Chief Guest (name of chief guest). It’s a true honor to have such a successful alumnus (or state the chief guest’s job title). We express our biggest gratitude for accepting our invitation to deliver today’s keynote speech.

I’m standing here as a lucky witness to our dear students’ academic journey. Our school is very proud of everything you have accomplished and your small but not minor contributions to society. You’ve brought prestige to our name and deserve the title of one of our school’s most successful and dedicated batch of students.

With your teachers’ guidance and parents’ support, you’ve reached remarkable heights. I’d like to take this time to extend my gratitude to our faculty and our parents, for understanding, encouraging, and nurturing our students.

Graduates, you are about to start another chapter in your life. An exciting yet scary period. From now on, you will face more challenges, but I am confident that you’re adequately equipped to face any tribulation that comes your way. Remember that with conviction and self-belief, no mountain is too high to climb. The laurels you’ve brought back to our school are only the beginning. I am genuinely excited to see the astonishing feats that your futures hold.

A long opening speech for a commencement ceremony

Good morning everyone! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our esteemed faculty, astounding parents, and our dear students. I’m honored to open our commencement ceremony and stand here where many of our accomplished alumni who I look up to once stood.

I extend a particularly warm welcome to our Chief Guest (name of chief guest), who as one of our outstanding alumni, has really set the standard for exemplary accomplishments.

(enumerate key achievements of chief guest)

Her/his professional and philanthropic endeavors attest to their upbringing and the values she/he lives by. We want to thank you for responding positively to our invitation to be the keynote speaker on today’s auspicious occasion.

As another academic year reaches its end, I’m sure that our dear students are anxious and also filled with hope and excitement. This is their final school event in our renowned school/college/university (name of school). But hopefully, it won’t be their last awarding ceremony.

We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and passionate group of graduates who have earned laurels in honor of our school, adding to its distinction and great reputation. The amazing encouragement and unconditional support of our parents throughout the school year have been extraordinary. They have stood by their children in every school event. Our teachers and staff are truly thankful for the trust you’ve given us. Your children’s journey wouldn’t have been a huge success without your guidance and nurture.

It’s been a remarkable experience to witness the passion and commitment our students have exhibited in all their undertakings. I am filled with certitude that you will achieve whatever goal you’ve set your mind on. Adulthood is going to be jammed with more trials you’ve never imagined before. I am kidding. Maybe. Joking aside, you will win as long as you work hard and believe in yourself.

Remember that you are valuable and take every challenge you face as an opportunity to prove your worth and get better. Also, surround yourselves with people who are good for your well-being and treat them the way you’d like to be treated.

Maintain your sense of humor because not much else will get you through when the going gets rough. Life can be very special and you can truly make a mark, which doesn’t always need to have global proportions. Be accountable for your mistakes and learn from them. Keep nurturing your passions and remain as driven, bright, and astonishing as you are today. You are all wonderful and I can’t wait to see your future accomplishments, because they will be great.

Thank you and do us proud!

Children’s innocence and love are incomparable and difficult to resist. Their smile is the closest thing to heaven that we can glimpse in the world.

School is your children’s second home, and we teachers are their second parents. We thank you for the opportunity to take care of and guide your little angels.

Join us to celebrate our students and make this day as eventful and fun as it can be!

This is the period to create good memories and meet people who can be a permanent part of your academic and later professional lives. May you develop the relationships and acquire the necessary skills to succeed in life.

But for now, let’s leave our worries and cares out in the hall. Let’s celebrate your wise decision to matriculate in our institution. Our college has prepared special events and an entertainment program highlighting some of our talented students.

The next few hours will be memorable and exciting! Thank you for listening and let’s get on with it!

Sample of Welcome Speech for a Goodbye Get-together

Good evening everyone!

Welcome to my farewell party. I know, I know. You all said you’re sorry to see me go, but that you all would need food and entertainment first to deal with your sadness. So here we are. I shall deliver.

As the Semisonic song goes “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” And so it is with great gratitude that the VP in Japan decided to retire early, so the end of his role can mark the beginning of mine. To Toni Takitani, thanks for deciding you’ve had enough!

Kidding aside, I’d like to thank my friends who made this very corporate event a huge success. Look at this, my goodness!

Most importantly, I want to impart my profound gratitude to my boss (name of the boss). Without you, this party won’t have a band. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Or I could, but none of them would have changed my life as positively as you have. It saddens me to leave you the most, but it comforts me that you were my biggest source of encouragement to go. Or it may have been your plan all along. Genius!

So to everyone who came, thank you. I’ll have time to thank you properly later, but for now, let’s eat!

Before anything else, I’d like to take this moment to thank Merville & Posque Inc., their CEO Mr. Hyori Asano and his team for putting this event together in record time. It won’t be possible without your tireless dedication and contributions. I also want to thank everyone who came, our remarkable associates from Osaka, Chiang Rai, and Quezon, our wonderful clients who have stuck with us through thick and thin, and our amazing consultants in various fields of energy conservation. Your interest and patronage are very much appreciated.

A great welcome to all our extraordinary employees and staff members, some of whom have worked and grown along our company’s 23-year history. A big welcome, too, to our interns who have recently joined and brightened our corporate offices.

Today marks the 15th annual MPBC and it’s an honor to be a host in this glorious congress. I myself will be staying for the conference’s entirety to learn what I can about sustainable energy systems and their various implications and impact on the future of our planet.

The activities today will include an overview of all the forums, seminars, and exhibits around the MPBC complex. Second, we will have the inauguration of the new bio-dome on the grounds where we will also honor this year’s retirees. The afternoon’s seminars will kick off after lunch, and I encourage you to attend the discussions and learn about our future plans and projects. Finally, I’d like to encourage everyone to help yourselves to the snack stations in the hallway. Refreshments and sandwiches are on us for the duration of the conference.

I won’t keep you long and let’s begin the day. I wish all of you a valuable and wonderful time! Thank you.

If you’re searching for tips on how to make a welcome speech for guest, here are some things you can do:

  • When drafting your speech, do the research.
  • Highlight the key qualities that are worth mentioning in an opening welcome speech for event.
  • Take note of the welcome address speech sample in this article and create a framework from them.
  • Look up welcome speech quotes and choose the best one to use somewhere in your speech.
  • Greet the chief guest at the event personally and introduce yourself if you don’t know each other.
  • Extend your hard for a handshake and smile to express that they are honored and welcome to the event.
  • Smile and suggest they are being welcomed.
  • Address them formally with the usual Miss or Mr.
  • Escort the chief guest before you assume host duties.

Welcoming the Chief Guest with a Short Speech

It’s a great honor to welcome our Chief guest and tonight’s keynote speaker. I was worried at first about how to introduce (title and name of Chief guest) because any introduction would pale in comparison to the reality and immensity of her/his accomplishments.

(Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest).

She/he is the ultimate inspiration for young professionals everywhere who want to succeed in the field of international trade. Here to inspire us with her career journey and all the experiences she accumulated along the day, join me in giving a round of applause to (title and name of chief guest).

Welcoming the Chief Guest (Longer Version of the Speech)

Introducing our next attendee is a great pleasure of mine. When she/he accepted our invitation to be tonight’s Chief guest and keynote speaker, I almost jumped for joy. Then I realized I would naturally receive the task of introducing her/him. At first, this gave me great anxiety. How would I be able to pull it off and deliver an introduction that would give her background justice? Then I thought, no introduction would ever compare, so it was foolish to aim for success when failure is guaranteed. So I decided to just do it. Our chief guest has accomplished the following, to name a few:

As I looked at her/his professional and personal successes, I realized here is a woman/man who was faced many times with the certainty of failure but had given her circumstances a grad twist by attaining success against all odds. Then I thought, perhaps I should aim for success in this speech, after all.

She/he is an inspiration to many, not only for all the fields of expertise she has earned and the extreme success that went with the process, but she/he has also set the benchmark for philanthropy and good deeds. She/he has done this quietly, too, and she/he might strangle me for revealing it to the public. I didn’t even know half of the wonderful things she/he has done for our community before my research.

Without further ado, and here to inspire us with her wisdom and grand skill, join me in welcoming our Chief guest (title and name of chief guest).

Welcome Speech for Parents

Hi everyone!

As host and brother of the groom, I’d like to take this time to introduce the parents of the bride. Without them, my brother wouldn’t be the lucky and happy man he is today. More than that, I have witnessed how they accepted my brother and treated him as a son long before the engagement. I often tag along on family trips and have spent hours of wonderful conversations with them. Apart from my own parents, they are two of the most affectionate and hospitable people I’ve ever met. If I could meet a woman whose parents are just like them, I’d consider myself half as lucky as my brother.

Let’s give a round of applause for (names of the bride’s parents). Thank you for embracing my brother into the fold.

Welcome Speech Samples for National Holidays

Below is a sample of a welcome speech typically delivered during Annual Day. Substitute the appropriate details to match your information and use the framework in other speeches reserved for national holidays.

Welcome Speech for Annual Day

I am overjoyed to have this chance to welcome all of you to our elite institution’s 25th Annual Day. Today’s children are the hope of the next generation. All these graduates we see today, receiving awards for their achievements will go on to lead successful lives. Let them live up to the expectations set before them.

I am very happy to be a member of such an elite school where we learned from such great professors who teach us beyond the boundaries of the ordinary classroom. They’re also the minds and hands behind such a big event every year. I’d like to use this chance to organize such a wonderful event this year. It’s also a great pleasure of mine to introduce our Chief Guest.

Welcome speeches are necessary at events. They usually set the tone or expectations of the people who attended or participated in the occasion. There are many ways in going about delivering a welcome address speech. Review the samples in this article and do your due diligence to craft an outline, framework, or skeleton from the contents that you can use in welcome speeches of your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

A good welcome speech has the following qualities: * It is sincere. * It can hold the attention of the audience. * The ideas don’t ramble. * Welcome address quotes are used. One for a short welcome speech, and 2 for a longer one. Never 3, unless the speaker is trying to be funny. * The contents are relevant to the event. * It has an impressive anecdote. * The length doesn’t exceed 5 minutes.

The last segment of this article contains tips on welcoming chief guests, esteemed guests, or guests of honor. The tips contained here can be divided into things to consider while drafting the welcome speech, and things to do at the event itself when meeting the chief guest.

A simple thank you would suffice. Make sure you reiterate your gratitude. Some welcome speeches can end with a line that welcomes the guest of honor.

Depending on the context, a welcome speech doesn’t always need to be impressive. In some situations, a straightforward introduction is all you need. However, in some circumstances like commencement ceremonies, farewell parties, dinners, and some others, the audience is prepared to listen to long speeches. In this case, the speech needs to catch the attention of the attendees and maintain their interest. An impressive welcome speech often has an emotional element. Not just parroting big words to describe a person’s achievements or flatter them. Try to use humor if you’re funny by nature or if you can deliver the punchline well. Use popular quotes in your speech. Tell anecdotes relevant to the attendees. Or reveal an epiphany. These are how you should draft a welcome speech set to impress.

Make sure that it is relevant to the content of your welcome speech or the point you’re making. You can use phrases such as the following: * According to… * As the old saying goes… * There’s a quote that has always stuck with me… * Events like this always remind me of one of my favorite quotes… Try to find quotes that are unique and not cliche. You can find some in the lyrics of contemporary music, or lines and dialogues from books and movies, and so on.

Welcome Speech

The School year at [insert name of school] is about to commence and I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you all.

Education can be likened to a great big canvas and this year we would like our students to throw as much paint as they can on the canvas of their education.   I appeal to the students, the parents and the teachers to value and uphold the importance of intrinsic motivation.

This year I have no doubt that our students will throw themselves into their education, they will make the most of the canvas of opportunity that they are offered and they will paint the goals that they aspire to. I have no doubt that if they remain motivated in the classroom, then they will achieve their goals.  Their education is sound, creative and innovative and [insert name of school] , together with the parents and the students themselves, will  help  to make this a reality.

Help! Four letters that can mean so much. Four letters that can be seen as a dynamic, planned action - or as a plea!

This year, the Parents Association will continue to tirelessly take action to help raise funds for [insert name of school]. The Board of Governors will continue to take action to help strategically plan towards ensuring an educationally sound and innovative future for our School.

The teachers at [insert name of school] will take action and help the students to achieve academic, sporting, cultural and life-long learning. May  I take this opportunity to thank the teachers for their continued professionalism, excellence and dedication. It is your teacher motivation and motivation in the classroom that will help to create a year that is bright with embraced opportunities.

However, even more importantly, the students themselves will have to take action to further their education. Our young ladies and gentlemen too are beginning to realize that they cannot merely sit back and expect the greater School community to do everything for them - they are realizing the importance of self-motivation and are prepared to help themselves.

It is an appeal that we make to our young charges today. Help yourselves ! Make the most of the fantastic educational opportunities that you have. Throw as much paint as you can on to the canvas of your education this year. If you can do that, then one day, you will be in a position to respond to the pleas of others who may need your help!

Help! Four letters that mean so much. You must help yourselves so that ultimately you can help others. Each young lady and gentleman here today, in their own way, will need to help. You will need to help your family. You will need to help the environment. You will need to make sense of the world when sense and reason go missing. You will need to help solve problems through innovation and invention. And, you will need to help turn indifference into motivated, helpful action.

This is our goal as the year at [insert name of school] commences! Let's continue to work together to help each other to be our best for the world!

You will wow them with your wonderful  welcome speech  - way to go!

The welcome speech template

To be effective your welcome speech needs to meet expected, as well as any specific, requirements dictated by the occasion.

The 6 standard welcome speech content ingredients

A woman with a cookbook reading a welcome speech recipe. Plus, a list of ingredients.

There are six common or standard content items in a good welcome speech.

  • Greetings to welcome everyone and thanking them for coming along.
  • Acknowledgement of special guests, if there are any.
  • An introduction of the event itself and a brief overview of special highlights the audience will want to know about.
  • Any important housekeeping information, for instance: where the bathrooms are, where lunch will be served and when...
  • An introduction for the next speaker, if there is one.
  • Thanking everyone for coming once more and then concluding having made everybody feel at ease, eagerly anticipating what is to come.

Numbers 1, 3, and 6 are basic essentials you cannot do without. Numbers 2, 4 and 5 may, or may not, be applicable. Pick what you need from them to fit your occasion.

Short sample welcome speech for a conference

Now let's put all six ingredients into an example of a short welcome speech to open a conference that you can adapt for your own speech.

* (This speech is pure fiction! I made it up to show you how it's done. You'll see its tone is formal rather than informal to fit the occasion. I don't think there is a group called Parents United. However, there are others with a similar mission: 10 Inspiring Organizations that Promote Literacy and Education .)

Example welcome speech - "Readers by Right"

"Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith, Jane Brown and all of our guests, good morning!

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and great pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you all here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in this special occasion, our 5th annual Children's Day Conference. Thank you for coming. That many of you have willingly traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is.

Quote extract: We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential.

Parents United is committed to actively raising the quality of life for every child. We want all children, regardless of race, creed or circumstance to achieve their full potential. Our task is to make it possible. Our mission is to provide practical, step by step assistance.

This year our theme is literacy. We've named the day 'Readers by Right'.

Thanks to the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are aware of 'rights' in many spheres, including education.  Article 26 declared it should be compulsory and free for children.

That goal is as pertinent today as it was then. And it's a goal I know we all share - the full development of every child. As a body, Parents United recognizes good reading skills established in childhood as the foundation of fulfilling, and ongoing education.

Quote extract: Jim and Jane bring their passion and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed.

We are honored to have Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith and Jane Brown with us today. All three are esteemed specialists in teaching young children to read.

Sue-Ellen has worked for a long time with educational authorities to establish programs putting in place necessary pre-reading skills. Her hard work needs no introduction. The results speak for themselves.

Jim and Jane bring their passion, and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed. Their work among disadvantaged English-as-a-second-language families has bridged gaps that were deep dark chasms.

Prepare yourself to be challenged, excited and inspired.

And before I handover to Lesley Watts, our coordinator for 'Readers by Right', who will outline the day's various events, I want to say once more on behalf of the Parents United organizing committee, welcome. It's wonderful to see so many of you here."

Get your welcome speech started

To shortcut wondering, "Should I say this?" or "Maybe I should say that?" and "Then again there's also ...", I have a very simple solution for you.

Get yourself a printable welcome speech planner

Download and print my  special greeting address planner .

It covers ALL the necessary ingredients that go into preparing a successful welcome speech. It's simple to use and easily filled out. Once it's done, writing your speech will be a lot less hassle as you'll have the core content ready to work with.

Writing your welcome speech

Tips to help you get your speech right.

When you're entering information into your speech planner:

  • ensure you've got all the names of individuals or special guests you need to mention specifically and, that you know how to pronounce each of them. Also check that you know and use their preferred pronouns: them/they, she/her, he/him...
  • double check the remarks you're going to make about them, or anything else, are factually correct.

Use your introduction of your guests/or the event, as a "teaser" for what is going to come. It will help create anticipation in the audience. Don't ruin it by giving too much away! Just enough to tempt and no more.

Keep it brief. One to two minutes is generally sufficient.

(The word count of my sample welcome speech is 357. It will take approximately 2 minutes to say .)

Use the S-S-S formula for success: Short, Simple and Sincere. Your listeners will appreciate it.

Get a hand with vocabulary

If you're stuck for words, here's a large selection of  adaptable welcoming phrases with example s entences.  Reading through them could help you to find exactly what you want.

What does a good welcome speech do?

Audience members listening intently.

An effective welcome speech has three important functions. It:

  • signals the official beginning of an event . It says to the audience, hush, sit down, stop talking and listen. What you came for is starting!
  • sets the tone for the occasion through the choice of language used . For example, using light-hearted and informal words to welcome guests to a dear friend's birthday party may be completely appropriate.  However, the same type of language to welcome family and friends to a memorial service is unlikely to be. In that setting, people generally expect a more solemn and formal word choice. They could be deeply offended and think the use of casual language is disrespectful.  Understanding and getting tone right is a key element in the overall success of your welcome speech.
  • unites the audience . It draws everyone together in the common purpose at the heart of the occasion. For example, at a birthday party, the welcome speech invites everyone to join in celebrating the person whose birthday it is. The welcome speech opening a specialist conference will affirm its principal purpose: the coming together of people with mutual interests to meet and share new knowledge. Or if a welcome speech is given to newcomers in a workplace, club or educational setting, its purpose is to give an introductory overview of how things work to help them feel more at ease in their new situation - to help them develop a sense of belonging.

Getting the tone right for an event

What is tone.

Tone is the combined impact of the words chosen to express something, with how they are structured and, delivered.  All three elements come together to create tone * .

Get tone wrong, and your welcome speech is a disaster.

Get it right, and it's a triumph!

(Yes, that's hyperbole but I'm sure you get the idea. ☺)

* Tone - a mood, quality or feeling

How to choose the right words

The beginning of getting tone right is to think about your audience and the event itself. Your goal is to unite and bring them together in the main purpose at the core of the occasion. What type of language will do that most appropriately and easily?

Infographic illustrating the principal differences between formal and informal language to create tone

To answer that question, think about the common interest everybody shares - the principal reason behind them getting together.  It will help guide your language choice.

Is it a fun event like a birthday party for close friends and family? If so, then informal language is likely to be the most apt.

You might hear something along the lines of: "Well, here we all are! The big day has finally arrived. Jean-Marie is 50! Half a century! How on earth did that happen?"

If it's a remembrance service for someone who has recently died, the language you're likely to hear is more formal.

For example: "Friends, family, colleagues, thank you for joining us today to celebrate and give thanks for our dear Jean-Marie. Your presence is gratefully appreciated."

What is appropriate? What is expected?  Do spend some time thinking tone through. Misunderstanding and getting it wrong can be very embarrassing for everyone. If in doubt, ask someone whose opinion you trust.

Long Welcome Speech in English for Learning and Growth of School Students

‘My dear students, I welcome you all to a brand new school year. I am so excited to see all of your familiar, new, and enthusiastic faces.

This year, we are boarding on a wonderful journey of learning and growth. As you all have walked through the doors of our school, do remember that you are the shining stars of your journey. Trust your power to make this year amazing.

Every day will come as a challenge for you but your adventure and curiosity will overcome all. Do not forget to step out of your comfort zone and explore new things, thoughts that you have never thought about before. Push yourself far beyond the boundaries of what you know because that is where actual learning happens.

Dear students, never evaluate your success with your grades. Learn about the knowledge you gain, the skills you develop, and the compassion you show to others. Remember to set your goals, and do not let anything else hold you back from reaching your full potential.

As you are beginning the new school year, think about what you want to accomplish. Your accomplishments can be personal too, for instance developing a new hobby or becoming confident in whatever you do. Meanwhile, you should not forget that true greatness is not just about successful results.

It is also about the journey which you take to get there. Learn from the challenges and the setbacks that you might face. These drawbacks will further help you to grow the most. In this learning journey, your teachers, your peers, and everyone around you are here at school to support you. Together we all will help you to overcome every obstacle and to cherish the victories.

One of the things that makes our school community unique is the incredible diversity that we have. Our different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences are what make us strong. Every student gathered over here brings unique perspectives and sets of skills to the table. Trust me, embracing diversity and learning from each other brings amazing results.

Try to reach out to those whose experiences are different from your own. Try to listen to them with an open heart and mind, so that their stories can help you to grow and learn.

Last but not least, I want to discuss the most important part of your academic journey and that is the importance of embracing challenges. Dear students, life is full of ups and downs. Do you think this year or any forthcoming year will be an exception? No! There will be several times when things don’t work according to you and sometimes it might be impossibly hard.

But remember that it is in those difficult times that we grow the most. When we face challenges head-on, we develop in-person, enhance our problem-solving skills, and understand ourselves more deeply.

My dear students, our brand new journey is the opportunity for you to shine. You have the power to make this year an extraordinary one and I cannot wait to see what you all accomplish. So let us all get started and learn, explore, and overcome any challenges that come your way.

Thank you!’

Short Welcome Speech in English for Learning and Growth of School Students

‘Hello, my dear friends. As we all start our new school year, I want to challenge every one of you to think about what you want to achieve. What are your real passions and what gets you excited about and makes you motivated? All these self-evaluation questions are going to pave you towards greatness.

As you all know true success is just not about getting good grades or winning awards. It is about discovering who you are and what you are capable of doing. Furthermore, it is about pushing yourself beyond your limits and comfort zone too so that you can leave a lasting impact on the world around you.

Please take a moment and think about what things look like to you. What are those that you want to set for yourself this year? It can be learning a new skill, language, or community project that you are passionate about or may want to improve your grades to become a better student.

Pursue anything but meanwhile do not forget that the journey of learning and greatness is not always easy. You will face challenges, and setbacks, and might sometimes give up. It is all okay to feel so but lastly what is important is to stay positive in the end, keep pushing yourself forward and never lose sight of your dreams.

Take the help of your teachers and your elders to make this journey remarkable.

Take a deep breath and let the excitement of the unknown fill your senses. This is your moment to shine and leave your footmarks for the world.

Second Half of the Programme (For Educational Institutions)

Hello everyone and welcome to the second half of the parents’ orientation programme. In the first half, our teachers explained to you the detailed plan for the upcoming 2022-2023 session. Now, we will be having a Q&A session.

We invite all the guardians who have queries, doubts or questions about whatever was discussed earlier to please raise their hands during the session and ask their questions. Our masters and teachers here will try their best to clarify your doubts. If you have any suggestions, please let us know as well. We will surely consider it. Thank you. So, does anyone have any queries?

Thank you, guardians. I hope our teachers were able to clarify all your doubts. We are thankful for your suggestions as well.

It is now time for us to move on to the next portion of this programme – the parent-teacher meeting. To the parents and guardians who want to talk to the teachers and masters about their wards, you may come and meet the teachers one by one. Thank you.

Ending Speech (For Both Educational and Non-educational Institutions)

Thank you, everyone. We have now come to the conclusion of the programme. I would like to thank all the parents and guardians who took the time out of their busy schedules to attend this meeting. As much as we boast of a brilliant panel of teachers and guides, we believe that having the guardians understand how we work with our students is very important.

It helps us build trust, and understand the special needs of our students (if any) and thus, helps them learn better. So, we truly appreciate your presence here and thank you for your time and support. I would also like to thank our teachers and staff members for helping us organise this meeting and making sure it went smoothly – Thank you!

Thank you, everyone! Have a good day/night!

Note: This is a sample script meant to provide you with a basic idea of how to write an anchoring script for a parents’ orientation program. Feel free to use this script and edit it as per your needs.

Are you on welcome speech duty for an upcoming program or event? You’ve got nothing to worry about—with the right format and tone, it’s super easy to write and present a welcome speech for just about any occasion. We’ve outlined everything you need to know, from your opening greetings and acknowledgments, to establishing the right tone and nailing your closing remarks. You’ve got this in the bag!

Greeting the Audience

Step 1 Welcome the audience using serious language for a formal occasion.

  • Keep the tone more serious if it's an important occasion. Use more formal language and don't crack any inappropriate jokes. For example, at a wake, you might say, "We're so glad to have you all here tonight. We appreciate your presence at this difficult time."

Step 2 Greet guests informally by using light-hearted language.

  • For an event with close friends and family, more informal language might be appropriate. Include a few jokes and keep your speech more lighthearted.

Grab your audience's attention with a strong opening. Start with a loud voice and a strong presence that welcomes everyone and gets them involved. Ask a question they can respond to or tell a joke — anything to connect with the audience. Do something that grabs their attention and excites them and makes them thrilled about the event.

Step 3 Add individual greetings for any special guests.

  • Special guests include any people of honor, those that may play a particularly important part in the event, or those who have traveled a long way to be there.
  • Make sure that you practice all of names, titles, and pronunciations of the special guests before your speech.
  • For example you could say, "We'd like to extend a special welcome to our guest of honor, Judge McHenry, who will be speaking later tonight."
  • Alternatively to welcome a group of people you might say, "While we're excited to have you all here tonight, we'd especially like to say welcome to the students from Johnson Middle School."

Step 4 Introduce the event itself.

  • For an informal event such as a birthday party, you could say, "We're so happy to have you here tonight to eat, drink, and celebrate another year of Jessica's life. Now, let's get to it."
  • For a more formal event such as one run by an organisation, you could say, “We are so excited to have you all here to participate in our 10th annual pet’s day, organised by the Animal Rescue Group.”

Forming the Body of the Speech

Step 1 Acknowledge those who have played an important part in the event.

  • An example of acknowledging individual people is saying, “We couldn’t have pulled off this fundraiser without the hard work and dedication of Grace and Sally, who worked tirelessly from day 1 to make today a reality.”
  • Avoid reading off a long list of people or sponsors, as your audience will begin to get bored. Stick to just a handful of highlights.

Step 2 Mention any parts of the event that are of special importance.

  • For instance, at a conference, you might point out when the dinner will be held, or where particular sessions will take place.
  • At a wedding reception, you might note when dancing will start or when the cake will be served.

Step 3 Reiterate your welcoming line.

  • Alternatively, you could end the body of your speech during an informal gathering by saying, “I can't wait to see you all out on the dancefloor!”

Ending the Speech

Step 1 Say that you hope the audience enjoys the event, if applicable.

  • You could also say that you hope that the audience takes something away from the event. For example, “I hope that today inspires ideas and discussions around the ways that we can make our city a better place!”

Step 2 Introduce the next speaker if necessary.

  • At a formal event, you might say, "Now, for our speaker. Rebecca Roberts comes here from Montreal, Canada, and she is a leading expert in the study of the human brain. She'll be speaking tonight on what drives humans to make decisions. Let's welcome her."
  • For a more informal event such as a party, you could say, “Next up is Sam, who has been Kyle’s best friend for 10 years strong. He has a decade of embarrassing stories about Kyle to share with us tonight!"

Step 3 Thank the audience for attending.

  • Alternatively you might say, “Thank you again to everyone for being here tonight to celebrate Joe and Kathleen’s 50th wedding anniversary! Let the celebrations begin!”

Step 4 Keep your speech within a suitable time limit.

  • If you are unsure, ask the organiser or host what an appropriate length of time for your speech will be.

About This Article

Patrick Muñoz

To write a welcome speech, start with a greeting to your audience that’s appropriate to the situation. For example, you could try “Good evening ladies and gentlemen” if you’re introducing a formal event, or “Thank you everyone for coming on this sunny day” for a more relaxed occasion. After you’ve finished the greeting, introduce the event by talking about who organized it and what its purpose is. In the main body of your speech, acknowledge 2 or 3 people who played important parts in organizing the event. You should also emphasize special parts of the event that people should pay attention to, such as where dinner will be or where a conference session will take place. When you’re ready to conclude your speech, tell the audience to enjoy the event by saying something like “I hope you all enjoy the exciting speakers to come.” Finish your speech by thanking the audience for attending. 15 Brilliant Examples of Teacher Introduction Letters to Parents

Get ready for the new school year!

Teacher introduction letter examples including a Meet the Teacher checklist and Meet the Teacher fact sheet.

A new school year is about to begin. Are you ready? One of the best ways to get back into the groove is to write your teacher introduction letter to parents. This is a great time to reflect on previous years while setting an intention for the year ahead. Take time to curate the message you want to send, but don’t stress over it. We’ve put together some tips and examples to help you get started.

Tips for Writing a Teacher Introduction Letter to Parents

Make a friendly introduction.

Set the tone for your letter (and the school year!) by using a warm and friendly voice to introduce yourself to parents and students. Personalize this section by including the student’s name and class information. This is also helpful for parents who may have more than one child at the school.

Give them your background

Take a moment to highlight your education, experience, and skills to give them a better idea of your professional background and qualifications. Be sure to share any special training or certifications you’ve received as well as any goals you’ve set for the year.

Tell them why you are a teacher

There are many reasons why parents might find it harder and harder to leave their children in a classroom. Showcase your passion, teaching philosophy , and love for being a teacher, and let them know you are open and available to discuss any of their concerns during the school year.

Speech on Parents Day:

Introduction.

Good day everyone, my name is…and I welcome you all to this wonderful event. I count it a privilege to be giving this speech today to celebrate “ parents day “.

Attention Getter

Bob Keeshan once said, and I quote

“Parents are the ultimate role models for children. Every word, movement, and action have an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent”.

The truth is that the importance of our parents to our life can never be over-emphasized. Hence it is indeed worthwhile to be celebrating them today.

I want to say this beautiful day that I am glad that I came to the world through my wonderful parents, even when I think I’m right, you have always wanted the best for me.

I cannot thank you enough for your show of love right from birth, until this present moment. You have made me a better person today. And that will forever be a wonderful thing to me. Every day of my life, if I have the opportunity, I would always love to appreciate you for your unconditional love, commitments, and sacrifices. Your love for me is indeed unquantifiable and am glad that I’m associated with you.

I want to use this medium to appreciate my parent for their support financially. And to say I don’t take this for granted. From the depth of my heart, I want to say a big thank you to you.

Also for your moral support. I am indeed grateful. For those times I failed and you never for once made me feel like a failure. You’ve always encouraged me and motivated me to do better. It takes genuine love to do this, and I want to say I am very much happy and to promise you that I will make you proud.

I want to say this day that you will always deserve my honor and respect for giving me life, for the countless sacrifices nurtured through my infancy and childhood, for providing me with the necessities of life, and nursing me through physical illnesses and the emotional stress of growing up. I am indeed grateful

As mentioned earlier, I am who I am today because of my parent’s involvement in my life. This day is not enough to show my gratitude for your show of love from birth till this moment. I cannot thank you enough for being a wonderful parent to me. And to every other wonderful parent gathered here today on behalf of all the beautiful children in the world I want to say a big thank you to you all. And to say we are happy to be associated with you all.

Thomas Friedman once said, and I quote “There’s no question that a great teacher can make a huge difference in a student’s achievement, and we need to recruit, train and reward more of such teachers. But here’s what some new studies are also showing: We need better parents. Parents more focused on their children’s education can also make a huge difference in a student’s achievement”. Thanks for your time and attention. Do have a lovely day ahead. Happy parents day!

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker may have stirred controversy in some quarters for his proclamations of conservative politics and Catholicism on Saturday, but he received a standing ovation from graduates and other attendees of the May 11 commencement ceremony at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.

The fast-growing college is part of a constellation of conservative Catholic colleges that tout their adherence to church teachings and practice — part of a larger conservative movement in parts of the U.S. Catholic Church.

Butker’s 20-minute speech hit several cultural flashpoints.

Butker, a conservative Catholic himself, dismissed Pride month as consisting of the “deadly sin sort of pride” while denouncing abortion and President Joe Biden’s handling of the pandemic. He said women are told “diabolical lies” about career ambition when “one of the most important titles of all” is that of homemaker. He said this is not time for “the church of nice” and in particular blasted Catholics who support abortion rights and “dangerous gender ideologies.”

WHAT IS BENEDICTINE COLLEGE?

Benedictine College is a Catholic college in Atchison, Kansas, that traces its roots to 1858. It is located about 60 miles north of Kansas City., and has an enrollment of about 2,200.

LOTS OF COLLEGES ARE CATHOLIC. WHAT MAKES IT DISTINCTIVE?

In some ways, Benedictine College sounds like a typical Catholic college. Its “mission as a Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts, residential college is the education of men and women within a community of faith and scholarship,” according to its website.

But its home to more traditional expressions of Catholicism, such as the Latin Mass, all-night prayer vigils and a strict code of conduct. Its mission statement further cites its commitment to “those specific matters of faith of the Roman Catholic tradition, as revealed in the person of Jesus Christ and handed down in the teachings of the Church.”

The school gets a high ranking from the Cardinal Newman Society, a group that touts nearly two-dozen conservative colleges that exhibit what it calls “faithful Catholic education.” That includes upholding church teachings and Catholic identity while providing ample Masses and other devotional activities in shaping their students.

The society seeks to differentiate schools that “refuse to compromise their Catholic mission” from those that have become “battlegrounds for today’s culture wars.” Others praised by the society include Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., Ave Maria University in Florida and Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio.

The society’s ranking says Benedictine benefits from having monks in residence, multiple Masses and prayer groups, spiritually focused organizations and theology programs with professors with a “mandatum” of approval from the local bishop.

HOW HAS THAT RESONATED WITH STUDENTS?

Benedictine’s enrollment has doubled in the past 20 years. Some 85% of its students are Catholic, according to the Cardinal Newman Society.

Students told The Associated Press in interviews they embrace the college’s emphasis on Catholic teaching and practice.

“It’s a renewal of, like, some really, really good things that we might have lost,” one student told the AP in its recent article on the revival of conservative Catholicism.

OTHER FACTS

Annual tuition for full-time undergraduates is $35,350, but Benedictine says 100% of its students receive some form of financial aid.

Benedictine’s sports teams, called the Ravens, compete in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Its athletics department says it is committed to ”setting the highest standards for academic success, athletic competition, ethical behavior, fiscal responsibility, and spiritual development.”

HOW DID GRADUATES REACT TO BUTKER’S SPEECH?

Video of the commencement shows virtually all the graduates and spectators rising to a standing ovation, but student interviews showed a more mixed reaction.

ValerieAnne Volpe, 20, who graduated with an art degree, lauded Butker for saying things that “people are scared to say.”

“I was thinking about my dad, who was also here, and how he’s probably clapping and so happy to see what he would say is a real man (reflecting) family values, good religious upbringing and representation of Christ to people,” she said. “You can just hear that he loves his wife. You can hear that he loves his family.”

Kassidy Neuner, 22, said the speech felt “a little degrading” and gave the impression that only women can be a homemaker.

“I think that men have that option as well,” said Neuner, who will be spending a gap year teaching before going to law school. “And to point this out specifically that that’s what we’re looking forward to in life seems like our four years of hard work wasn’t really important.”

Elle Wilbers, 22, who is heading to medical school in the fall, said the Catholic faith focuses on mothers, so that portion of the speech wasn’t surprising. She was more shocked by his criticism of priests and bishops “misleading their flocks” and a quip comparing LGBTQ+ Pride month to one of the seven deadly sins.

“We should have compassion for the people who have been told all their life that the person they love is like, it’s not okay to love that person,” Wilbers said. “It was sort of just a shock. I was like, ‘Is he really saying this right now?’”

WHAT DID BENEDICTINE’S NUNS SAY?

The Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, one of the founding sponsors of Benedictine College, issued a statement Thursday criticizing Buter’s speech, contending it did not properly represent the college’s values.

“Instead of promoting unity in our church, our nation, and the world, his comments seem to have fostered division,” the statement said.

“One of our concerns was the assertion that being a homemaker is the highest calling for a woman,” it added. “We sisters have dedicated our lives to God and God’s people, including the many women whom we have taught. ... These women have made a tremendous difference in the world in their roles as wives and mothers and through their God-given gifts in leadership, scholarship, and their careers.”

Use Of a Welcome Speech

A welcome speech for any type of situation is often used to show hospitality to a group of people. It is also used to make people feel accepted. Welcome speeches are often used in schools for freshmen students. The people who often do these types of speeches are principals, deans or presidents in schools.

Defining the Word Speech

An important talk that is most likely an important person addressing the group. It is a formal way to deliver a message or discourse to people in the room. A talk usually given to a large group or a party for special purposes i.e. welcoming students, welcoming people, a toast to a wedding.

Tips to Write and Present a Good Welcome Speech

One thing that comes to mind when you think about a good welcome speech is how to write one and how to make it good. Okay, two things. But to write a good welcome speech, you have to consider some of these possibilities . I am not saying they would work for everyone, but I am saying is as a general point of view, they are just tips and it is clearly up to you on how to make it work. So listed below are 5 tips on how to write a good welcome speech.

  •   Audience : Who are your audience. Now, before you make a good welcome speech, ask yourself. Are my audiences adults, teens, children, or parents? What are they going to expect me to say? How do I deliver this speech to them?
  • Topic:  Choosing a topic for a welcome speech is the next thing to do. Ask yourself, who are you welcoming, and why are you writing this speech for? Who are your audiences? College students ? Employees? High School students? Children? Your topic would depend on your audience as well.
  •  Introduction : Your introduction does not have to be very lengthy. Your introduction should be short and to the point. You are merely telling the topic of your speech but not the speech itself. Avoid dragging the introduction and mistaking it for the body of your speech.
  • Go straight to the point : Do not jump from one topic to another. Choose one topic, talk about it. Do not drag unnecessary things in your speech. This is something people should learn to avoid.
  • Body Language: Watch your body language when you get up on stage to talk. Your body language says it all. Avoid staring into your speech copy. You need not memorize what you wrote, you only need to be familiar with it. Even during an impromptu speech , the best thing to remember is to be familiar with what you wrote and to remain eye contact with your audience. This is important because they need to feel and know you are addressing them.

Why is making a speech so important?

Speeches are a way for people to connect. It is a way to address things and to help people open up.

Is it normal to feel stage fright when making a speech?

Stage fright is normal when you go up to make a speech. Just breathe. You’ll be fine.

How do I memorize a speech in a day?

You do not need to memorize your speech. Rather, you should try and be familiarized with it. That way it is easier for you to remember the important key points in your speech.

How to remain eye contact when making speeches?

Glance every now and then around the people in the room. Make them feel welcome. Remember whether it is a speech made to welcome or to say your farewell, always remain eye contact. Make them feel they matter.

How to make an impromptu speech good?

Go straight to the point, do not break eye contact, be familiar with what you wish to talk about and to have fun.

Let’s face it, we all have issues way back then when making speeches. It is not something to be embarrassed about, we have all been there. The fact that making speeches is more frightening than presenting it. It is close to impossible to memorize a speech but the best thing to do is to be familiar with what you wish to talk about. Go straight to the point, don’t dawdle. Keep eye contact with your audience. Make them feel they are important, that the speech you are making or presenting is for them. As long as you follow the tips and at the same time have fun with how you present your speech, you’re good to go. Good Luck! Wow the audience.

Jewish Haverford students file lawsuit against Haverford College alleging antisemitism

A group of Jewish students, faculty, parents and alumni at Haverford College have sued the school, alleging that it is discriminating against Jews by tolerating antisemitic speech and failing to support Jewish students amid an anti-Israel climate on campus.

In a federal lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the group, called Jews at Haverford, accused leaders of the liberal arts college of applying a double standard to minority groups on campus. The group said the college violated the Civil Rights Act when it failed to condemn Hamas’ attacks on Israel, despite previously issuing statements pledging solidarity with other minorities, including after police killings of Black people.

The suit comes amid continued unrest on college campuses and in classrooms over the Israel-Gaza war. Schools across the country, including the University of Pennsylvania , where a pro-Palestinian encampment was disbanded by police last week , and Temple University have faced an uptick in federal complaints over allegations of antisemitism and Islamophobia since the Oct. 7 attacks.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights is investigating one such claim from a group of Jewish parents in Philadelphia accusing the Philadelphia School District of antisemitism at Masterman and other city schools, where students and families have clashed over the war in Gaza.

At Haverford, where a junior was among three Palestinian students shot near the University of Vermont in November, students have invoked the college’s Quaker roots while pressing it to support a cease-fire .

The Jews at Haverford group said the college has repeatedly permitted speech critical of Israel by students and professors; one professor called Haverford students who supported Israel “racist genocidaires,” a statement the college didn’t challenge, according to the lawsuit.

The college also let students host an event claiming that Israel had intentionally infected Palestinians with COVID-19 — claims the Jewish group compared to “medieval blood libels” that falsely accused Jews of murdering Christians.

The lawsuit also lists complaints about the college’s plenary meetings, when the student body gathers to discuss and vote on issues. This academic year, plenaries have featured resolutions to call for a cease-fire, with “wildly biased” accounts of the Israel-Hamas conflict, according to the lawsuit. It claims several Jewish students were not permitted to speak and were bullied for their signatures.

Haverford has adopted “a single unifocal definition of justice, which excludes, and is resolutely hostile to, Jews who are committed to Israel’s existence as a Jewish state or even insufficiently committed to its elimination,” the lawsuit said.

A spokesperson for the college, Chris Mills, declined to comment.

The case against Haverford was filed by the Deborah Project , a public interest law firm that says it seeks to “uncover, publicize, and dismantle antisemitic abuses in educational systems.” The firm has filed cases against schools in other states, including one in 2022 seeking to block what it called an “overtly racist and antisemitic” ethnic studies curriculum in Los Angeles.

In April, the Deborah Project went to court in Montgomery County after the Bryn Mawr Film Institute canceled the screening of a film about an Israeli musician in response to opposition from organizations critical of Israel; a Montco judge ordered the theater to show the film .

Lori Lowenthal Marcus, the firm’s legal director, said “dozens” of people are part of the Haverford group, though only students have standing to bring the case.

“They want the college to have one set of rules that applies to everyone, and not treat some minority groups as having different protections than other groups,” Marcus said.

What does the antisemitism lawsuit against Haverford say?

The lawsuit — which describes a “history of antisemitism” at Haverford, including quotas on the numbers of Jewish students who could attend the college in the 1930s — cites five students who have been affected by anti-Israel demonstrations, saying they have been shunned and have changed their routines on campus.

Only one is identified — Ally Landau, a women’s basketball player, who sent a campus-wide email in early November “in the name of many concerned Jewish students at Haverford and Bryn Mawr.” She accused Students for Justice in Palestine and Students’ Council of “hijacking Plenary to push their one-sided anti-Israel agenda.”

Several weeks later, after the Vermont shooting, pro-Palestinian students issued a “grievances” document that called the shooting “the direct result of the proliferation of anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian rhetoric on this campus and beyond.” They called Landau’s email “hateful,” and demanded the college acknowledge a “continued ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people.”

Haverford’s president, Wendy Raymond, responded by thanking the writers for “open, honest, thoughtful, and constructive dialogues,” and listed proposals, including culturally competent counseling and support for faculty and student activism. She did not address the claim that the shooting was related to rhetoric on campus, according to the lawsuit.

When Landau, a member of the women’s basketball team, later organized an event at a game promoting awareness of antisemitism, administrators pressured her to cancel it, according to the lawsuit — saying it would “prove too antagonistic to the pro-Palestinian students on campus.”

Kinnan Abdalhamid, the Haverford junior who was shot, rejected the idea that administrators had sided with pro-Palestinian students — criticizing Raymond for not taking a position against the war in Gaza. “If anything, she’s catering more to the Zionists on campus,” he said.

The lawsuit says Haverford has allowed posters around campus with “From the river to the sea,” a phrase that appears in Hamas’ charter and that some have used as a rallying cry for the destruction of Israel. “Quoting the Hamas Charter is exactly as antisemitic as hanging a Confederate flag is racist,” the lawsuit said.

When posters were then torn down in March advertising a Shabbat dinner and a discussion of Jewish identity, the lawsuit said, the college failed to condemn the act as antisemitic.

In a message to the community April 9 acknowledging “growing concern about antisemitism on our campus,” Raymond noted the posters’ removal but said “the movement of many of the flyers can be accounted for by benign mechanisms.” The college continued to investigate, she said.

Raymond said it was “troubling and unacceptable” that some Jewish students believed that they could not participate in the college’s plenary. She also noted the event students held about COVID — originally titled “Mass Death on all Fronts: Israel’s weaponization of COVID against Palestinians,” which Raymond said “evoked centuries-old pernicious tropes related to blood libel.”

Administrators “interceded ... encouraging student organizers to exercise more empathy and consideration of their fellow community members, and to alter their approach to their topic,” Raymond said. While organizers changed the title to “COVID in Times of Genocide,” according to the lawsuit, Raymond said administrators “were disappointed by those changes, which did not assuage important and clearly expressed concerns.”

“I regret that our commitment to freedom of expression in this case has resulted in such pain and harm, contributing further to the feelings of alienation and prejudice that many Jewish people have described to me,” she said.

Among other actions, the lawsuit asks the court to order Haverford to ensure that students are protected from discrimination on the basis of their Jewish identity, “including those for whom Zionism is an integral part of that identity,” and that it be ordered to provide education about antisemitism “which includes the hostile treatment of Jews who believe in the centrality of Israel to Judaism.”

How a US university that prides itself on freedom of speech dealt with student protests over Gaza

Instead of chanting incendiary slogans, it would be great for pro-palestinian supporters to endorse the work of organisations such as the parents circle – families forum (pcff) involving bereaved families from both sides.

Breda O'Brien's face

On a recent visit to Chicago, I was struck by the difference between the US and Ireland when it came to reactions to pro- Palestinian protest camps in universities.

At the University of Chicago, (UChicago) the pro-Palestinian protesters flew the Palestinian flag from the central University flagpole. The University subsequently removed the halyard so that no flag could be flown. A group of students were outraged that the US flag was not restored, so staged a counter-protest to reinstate it, pumping out the Springsteen song Born in the USA as they attempted to do so.

Like Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump, the counter-protesters obviously mistook the thumping chorus for an endorsement of nationalistic fervour. In reality, Springsteen said the song is actually about a working-class man having a spiritual crisis where he feels lost, “.. isolated from the government. Isolated from his family.” Not exactly the look the counter-protesters were going for.

The counter-protest was well-handled by campus police in riot gear. (Like many US universities, UChicago has its own police force.) As they interposed themselves calmly between the pro-Palestinian protesters and those seeking to raise the US flag, at least some of the police must have been thinking about the irony that one of the demands of the pro-Palestinian group was that the campus police should be disbanded.

Critics are right to worry that hate speech laws are open to abuse

The University of Chicago prides itself on its commitment to freedom of expression , first promulgated in 2015 and emulated by more than 100 other colleges. In 2016, in a letter to new students, the University warned that it does not endorse “trigger warnings” or intellectual safe spaces where “individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with its own”. Students were told to expect to engage in rigorous debate, even to the point of discomfort. UChicago tolerated the pro-Palestinian tents longer than some other universities but the campus police – along with Cook Country sheriffs – dismantled the encampment at 4.30am on May 7th, after faculty sympathisers had left.

As an Irish visitor, it was impossible to gauge the level of student support for the pro-Palestinian camp. On a purely anecdotal level, I was interested in the reaction of one Jewish student, who opposes the devastation wrought by Israel in Gaza , but could not bring himself to join the protest because of the use of slogans that he judged did not just condemn Israel’s actions, but Israel’s right to exist at all. Similarly, other students involved in progressive politics in the local community were perplexed by the calls to disband the university police force. They believed that far from disbanding it, the local community wanted the force to extend its role to protect non-students from crime.

The University’s president, Paul Alivisatos, had said initially that he wanted to allow the protesters the greatest possible leeway, despite a campus policy against erecting structures such as tents and wooden fencing. He justified removing the camp on the grounds that it disrupted student life and degraded civility on campus. Counter-protesters were shouted down, Israeli flags were destroyed and some Jewish students reported feeling intimidated by slogans such as “Globalise Intifada”. Other universities cracked down even more harshly in a way that would be unthinkable in Ireland, including mobilising snipers .

Compared with US students, Irish pro-Palestinian student protesters have much more support. As John McManus pointed out , it is hard to generate much drama when your own Government is pushing for recognition of a Palestinian state. Yet here in Ireland, the Abrahamson family felt that Trinity had become a “no-go zone for Jews” and withdrew a bursary for disadvantaged students because, among other things, Trinity had turned a blind eye to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) flag being flown, even though it is designated a terrorist organisation by the EU.

Drawing the line between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism is fraught . Israel’s actions in Gaza are indefensible. Hamas , a violent, anti-democratic, corrupt and terrorist organisation, is dedicated to the destruction of Israel, but does not pose an existential threat to Israel in the way Israel poses to Gaza. Criticism of the Israeli government’s grotesquely disproportionate response to Hamas’s brutal and sadistic October 7th incursion is absolutely justifiable. Nonetheless, some of the pro-Palestinian campus protests have failed to communicate that their problem is with Israel’s policies and actions, not with the existence of Israel. According to the Israeli government , nearly 80 per cent of Israeli Jews were born there. Even on a pragmatic level, never mind Israel’s reasons for seeking a Jewish homeland in the first place, seven million Jews are not going anywhere. At some stage, Palestinian Arabs and Israeli Jews are going to have to learn to live together unless they wish to endure an ever-increasing spiral of death and violence.

Instead of sometimes chanting incendiary slogans, it would be great to see pro-Palestinian supporters endorsing the work of, say, The Parents Circle – Families Forum (PCFF) , which is a joint Israeli-Palestinian organisation of more than 600 bereaved families. They tell their stories of tragic loss to promote a non-violent solution. It would mean that potential Jewish allies do not feel threatened and alienated and it would do far more to advance the tragically tattered cause of peace.
