How to apply

We recommend that you contact us to discuss your chosen area of research before submitting an application. Do so by getting in touch with the relevant member of our academic staff, or the Postgraduate Admissions Team.

You are strongly encouraged to apply through the University's online application system as early as possible, to allow sufficient time for applying for external funding, and for visa applications and approvals.

General information

  • If you do not have all of the supporting documents required, submit the application along with any supporting documents you do have, and send any outstanding documents by email or post as soon as they become available.
  • It is important that you include a supporting statement with your application.
  • You should expect to receive a response after a minimum of three weeks. We will be able to handle your application much more quickly if you ensure that you have included all of the supporting documents, and up-to-date contact details.
  • Applicants applying for a funded PhD programme or studentship should carefully check the specific programme's application instructions and associated deadlines. Funded programme applicants may need to apply earlier than self-funded applicants.
  • There is no deadline for submissions, although early applications may stand a greater chance of success. It is recommended that MPhil and PhD applicants apply at least four months prior to the date of registration.
  • It is essential that you meet the English Language criteria for our courses. We require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall, or TOEFL (IBT) 90 overall. Each component of the tests should meet the minimum requirement of IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL (IBT) 22.

Supporting statement

It is important that you include a supporting statement with your application. It will help us assess your suitability for the course, especially for applicants from overseas. Supporting statements allow us to compare your practical background and experience alongside your academic qualifications. Failure to include this information may delay the processing of your application.

Ideally, your supporting statement should include:

  • why you want to undertake postgraduate research study;
  • why you want to do a postgraduate research degree in Manchester;
  • any research experience that you have.

If you have completed a research project during your undergraduate/master's study, please also give a short description of the work you undertook, including the following details:

  • the research problem;
  • your key findings;
  • techniques acquired and skills learned.

Department of Computer Science

How to apply

A doctoral research programme is a significant undertaking; it's important you carefully consider and discuss your chosen area of research before submitting your application.

We recommend that you speak to a member of academic staff or our postgraduate admissions team before you apply.

You can start in January or September, and you can apply up to a year before your intended start date.

Further information

More information on the application process for a postgraduate programme can be found below:

Frequently asked questions

The following is a list of frequently asked questions that you may find useful.

What is the deadline for applications?

We operate a rolling application system with four entry points for the three-year PhD or one-year MPhil programmes (the four-year CDT programme is only available from Sept entry due to the year one schedule). We do not have application deadlines although please bear in mind that other procedures, such as ATAS and visa applications can take some time so we advise applying as early as you can.

I need an offer. How long will it take?

It can take as long as a month for a complete application to be fully assessed and an offer made. A Doctoral research programme is a big undertaking and the application process is designed to assess whether candidates have the appropriate background, knowledge, temperament and attitude for a PhD. The process will include an interview (usually via phone or skype) and our admissions tutors will need to approve your acceptance before an offer can be made.

How do I apply for University funding?

Please indicate on your application form that you wish to be considered for funding. You will then be considered alongside other funding candidates. Please note that we do not have funding for the MPhil programme.

I would like to study any topic in Computer Science. Can you send my application to all supervisors?

We have a large number of academic staff in the Department, all with specific areas of expertise. It is most unlikely that an application will be picked up if there is no indication of the area of interest. A PhD is very high level study and requires not only hard work and commitment but also direction and strong interest in the chosen topic. Please note that candidates for the four-year CDT programme needn't choose a topic at the application stage.

Do I need to meet the English requirement before I apply?

Your application can be considered initially without having met this requirement. We would advise you to at least consider how you would meet the requirement as early as possible, particularly if your application is being made within a few months of your proposed start date. If your application is accepted before meeting English requirement, you will be made a conditional offer and will need to meet the requirement before being admitted.

I have studied a degree in an English-speaking country. Do I need to meet the English requirement?

Not usually. If you meet our entry requirements and have studied in a majority English-speaking country (UK, US, Australia etc), this is usually evidence enough that you meet the required standard. There are exceptions and you will be informed if we need further evidence.

I have studied in English in an overseas institution. Do I need to meet the English requirement?

Yes. The University is not able to vouch for the standard of English used in countries that are not majority English-speaking. Please visit the English language requirements page on the University website for further details.

Application tips

A doctoral research programme is a big undertaking. The application process is designed to assess whether candidates have the appropriate background and knowledge and also the right temperament and attitude for three (or six) years of research.

This advice should help you to provide the relevant information we need.

Choose an area you already have a good knowledge and understanding of

Your research proposal and any subsequent correspondence with one of our academic supervisors will come across as more well-considered if you already have a good understanding of your precise topic.

Choose your preferred academic supervisor carefully

Make sure you choose a staff member whose area of interest and expertise closely matches your research topic; it is not in either party’s interest to accept your application if the supervisor cannot offer a high level of expert support and it is unlikely that your application will be accepted. Doing a little background research will help you with this. Staff profile pages can be found by looking through our research themes . Our admissions staff may be able to offer some assistance with this, however, you will know your topic better than they do!

Ensure all required documents and information is provided

Read our how to apply section for more details. If you don’t already have them, you should request transcripts (including interim transcripts for degrees not yet complete) and written references. Your tutors and student admin support teams will be used to these requests.

Writing up and submitting your research

You can find up-to-date guidance on submitting your thesis on the Doctoral Academy website:

  • Thesis submission

The guidance includes information on:

  • plagiarism and referencing
  • how to format and present your thesis
  • using a journal format for your thesis
  • electronic submission
  • submission deadlines, including submission pending
  • thesis binding
  • the viva/oral exam
  • getting your result.

Presentation of thesis

The University has a specific format required for PGR theses. You will find this detailed in the Presentation of Theses Policy .

If you have queries about presentation, you can ask staff in the Doctoral Academy , or ask them to have a look at a draft document.

Traditional and journal thesis formats

You may hear your supervisors or other PGRS talk about the different types of thesis format that are accepted for examination at Manchester.

These are currently defined as 'standard' and 'journal' format, although you shouldn't get too concerned about the terminology used. One format is not inherently better or more widely regarded than the other.

The standard thesis will have an introduction, literature review, materials and methods, results and discussion and conclusion, references and appendices.

The journal format thesis comprises chapters that have been written in the form of journal papers.

These may be papers that have been submitted to a journal, already accepted and published or chapters that are written as journal papers but are not yet or even are not intended to be submitted.

The advantage of this format is that it gives you the experience of writing in journal paper format. This format is increasingly popular in some disciplines, and yet may not be appropriate for all projects. Your supervisory team is the best place to start discussing your thoughts on this.

There is no requirement to request permission to submit in journal format. However, it is important that you discuss the relative merits of this format with your supervisory team, and ensure that you pick the right format for you and your project. Further guidance is available in Journal Format Theses - Guiding Principles for Students and Staff (PDF).

Submission pending

  • Three-year PhD, MD and part-time - 12 months
  • MPhil and 3.5-year PhD - 6 months

If you are a PGR on one of the programmes above and you do not submit by the end of programme, you may be able to register for the submission pending period.

You will need to have completed all your research (such as data collection and experiments) and should have a draft of the thesis completed (usually 80% of chapters in a reasonable draft form).

Your Student Support Administrator will provide details on registering for submission pending and paying the fee (£225 in the 2023/24 academic year).

You should be aware that during this writing up period, you are not considered to be a full-time PGR at the University.

You will still have access to facilities and your supervisory team will continue to support you towards submission of the thesis and preparation for the oral examination (as appropriate).

Once you enter submission pending, you may be returning to full-time work or be involved in a number of external activities that will reduce the amount of time that you have to spend on writing your thesis.

Please note that due to HMRC requirements, the University cannot make stipend payments to a PGR during the submission pending period.

Submission deadlines

It is important for your career development that you submit your thesis within the period of your programme as set out in your initial offer letter.

If you are eligible to use the submission pending period, remember that it will be increasingly difficult to find time to dedicate to completing your thesis once you are in full-time work.

Your final submission deadline will be stated on your original offer letter. If you are granted any periods of interruption or an extension to your programme, you will be notified of any change in your final submission deadline in the letter confirming this change to programme.

You will also see your submissions deadline displayed in eProg ('Thesis Submission Deadline' on the 'My Profile' page).

Extensions to final submission deadlines

Extensions to your final submission deadline will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and where permission is sought at least two months prior to the final submission deadline. Visit the Forms page on the Doctoral Academy website for the relevant forms to complete.

You will need to provide clear, documented evidence as to how your mitigating circumstances have impacted your ability to meet the deadline. Examples of appropriate exceptional circumstances can be found within the policy on circumstances leading to changes to postgraduate research study .

It is expected that your mitigating circumstances will have occurred within the submission pending period, or the last 12 months of a four-year programme.

Should your request for an extension to the final submission deadline be rejected, you will have the right of appeal.

Please note that even if you submit an appeal, you should still submit your thesis for examination by the final submission deadline.

Oral examination/viva

An integral part of the PhD/MD process is the oral examination (viva). This will take place at Manchester with your internal and external examiner.

The Academic and Researcher Development Team provide courses on preparing for this examination, and you will also receive guidance from your supervisory team on what to expect.

MPhil PGRs may have to undertake an oral examination, and this will be determined by the examiners following initial review of the thesis.

You may find it useful to refer to the full University policies on PGR examination .

Examiner recommendations

  • A (i) no corrections
  • A (ii) subject to minor corrections (four weeks to complete, exceptionally up to 12 weeks can be granted for completion of minor corrections)
  • B (i) permitting submission of a revised thesis without further research and without further oral examination (six months to complete)
  • B (ii) permitting submission of a revised thesis without further research but with a further oral examination (six months to complete, exceptionally up to 12 months)

Frequently asked questions

We are often asked the same questions by our new postgraduate researchers.

Can I defer my entry?

Yes, but this must be in consultation with your supervisor and, if relevant, your sponsor. Please contact the Doctoral Academy Admissions team at  [email protected] for more information.

We can only defer applications for up to one year.

Can I apply for funding to support my studies?

The Faculty has a bursary scheme for international students. These awards have all been allocated for the 2023-24 academic year.

As a university student, you will have lots of new payments coming in and going out of your bank accounts, so it's important that you understand your student finances. Don’t worry, there's lots of advice and support available to make sure you can keep your finances in check.

So whether you're experiencing unexpected financial difficulties as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, want to apply for additional funding or are looking for advice on managing your money, we're here to help.

Take a look at the financial support available to you on the Student Support website: Financial support .

When will I get paid my stipend?

For students who are supported by a Research Council Studentship, the stipend rate is set by Research Councils UK, and is expected to increase annually in line with inflation.

The value of the award for the academic year 23/24 and the amount to £18,622.

To receive your stipend, you must first enter your bank account details into the student system (Campus Solutions) as part of the registration process. Visit the To-do list page for instructions on how to do this.

Payments will be made by bank transfer (BACS). Most stipends will be paid monthly (some will be made quarterly). The first instalment of your stipend will be paid on or around 1 October 2023. Further payments will be made on the final Thursday of each month.

Email us at  [email protected] if you are unsure how and when you will receive payments.

How do I pay my fees?

During the registration process, you can select your preferred payment method to suit your needs and also your sponsor (self-funded students and international scholarships only).

If you are sponsored then, on the production of a sponsor letter, we will invoice your sponsor directly.

If you are in receipt of a studentship, your fees will be paid via an internal process on your behalf.

If you are self-funding, then you can pay in full, or pay in three equal instalments due in September, January and April by direct debit.

You can find more details on how to pay your fees on the Student Support website:  Self-financing students .

I'm receiving a studentship but I am having difficulty with financial registration. What do I do?

Completing financial registration is dependent on internal processes that the Doctoral Academy Finance Team will be working on.

If you are unable to complete steps related to financial registration, don't worry as this information will be updated throughout September and you will be able to register fully by the end of September.

If you still have concerns, please contact the Admissions team, who will support you with your query.

Email: [email protected]

What is a supervisory team?

All students have a primary supervisor and may have additional co-supervisors who bring particular expertise to a project.

Postgraduate Tutors

Postgraduate Tutors have responsibility for overseeing students within their division (you will be assigned to a division depending on your supervisor). Postgraduate tutors are expected to meet students informally during Induction Week and occasionally throughout the year.

The Postgraduate Tutors sit on Divisional Postgraduate Research Committees and deal with problems that might affect a student's ability to meet progression milestones or thesis submission.

Postgraduate Tutors also conduct the writing-up interviews in the final year (or during submission pending) to ensure students manage the final stages of thesis preparation and will submit on time. The name of your Postgraduate Tutor will be confirmed shortly after arrival/registration.

Students are assigned an Advisor for the duration of their research programme. The Advisor is independent of the student's immediate lab grouping and they are primarily providing pastoral support.

We encourage students to contact their Advisor in the first instance if they have any concerns that cannot be managed by approaching their supervisor or co-supervisor.

Are there teaching opportunities during my programme?

Across the Faculty, we have opportunities for postgraduate research students to work as graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) and demonstrators on our undergraduate courses. You will earn cash while gaining valuable experience and boosting your CV.

Further information can be found on the Doctoral Academy website: Teaching and demonstrating .

We also ask for helpers at postgraduate open days.

Where can I access healthcare?

We know that your health and wellbeing is an important consideration, especially in the current circumstances.

While studying with us, if you have an illness or injury that won't go away then it's best to make an appointment with your General Practitioner (GP).

All students should register with a GP so that, if you ever need one, you can access the service.  You should, if you can, register with a GP before you arrive in Manchester. The Students' Union website has some helpful advice on finding a GP .

Information for international students

If you're applying to stay in the UK for six months or longer, you'll be required to pay an immigration health surcharge (prior to completing your visa application) to cover your healthcare.

Once you've paid the surcharge, you'll be entitled to visit a doctor or be treated in hospital for free. Students from Australia or New Zealand are exempt from the health surcharge, as the UK has reciprocal health agreements in place with those countries.

Are there opportunities to meet other research students?

We aim to support our postgraduate researchers in making the most of the student community at The University of Manchester.

You will have opportunities to meet fellow researchers through the Postgraduate Society and Faculty events.

You can explore the Students' Union Buddy pairing scheme  and the University Group Check-In and Video chat.

These peer-to-peer activities, popular with students last year, are offered to help you make friends and keep in touch, even if you need to quarantine or self-isolate.

To register your interest for Check-in and Chat, please email [email protected] with your name and course.

What if I arrive late? (International students only)

You should contact your supervisor to inform them of your arrival date. This will allow your supervisor to make suitable arrangements for when you do arrive.

Please also contact the Doctoral Academy by emailing [email protected] . We will advise you if there are other points that need to be considered.

Note that your CAS has a latest arrival date. If you know that you will not arrive in Manchester by this date, you must contact the Doctoral Academy.

Can I get a COVID vaccination?

You will be able to access a range of free COVID-19 vaccinations, whether you've already received one dose, or are yet to receive any.

If you've already received your first dose of a vaccine that is available in the UK, then you should receive the same one here.

If it's not available in the UK, then the most similar alternative should be offered.

It's important that you contact your GP to make sure you receive the most appropriate second dose.

These vaccinations are free, so if you see a request for payment then please report this to us and Action Fraud and don't pay.

You can find out more in the  NHS England FAQs and an article put together by our Student News Team .

Will the University provide me with computer equipment?

The University runs a service to provide postgraduate researchers with personal computing equipment, namely laptops and desktop PCs.

Further details including what computer equipment you can request via this service can be found on the IT Services website: Computer delivery service for postgraduate researchers .

You'll be asked to set up an account which means you can save your application and come back to it at a later date. If you need help you can also watch our videos on how to create an account and how to submit an application .

Make sure that you use a personal email address when you register and not a University of Manchester address.  You’ll be asked to fill in some security questions, your answers will be used if you ever lose or change your password, so we know it’s you.

Step 2. Starting your application

Once you start your application, use the left-hand navigation to move through the form, you can 'check your information' at each stage, which will:

  • ask you to complete missing information or to correct formatting (such as dates);
  • mark the section as 'complete';
  • ask you to upload supporting documents, if needed.

Check closing dates

While lots of master’s courses do not have official closing dates, some do so you will need to check individual course pages for closing dates.

If you want to apply for funding, you need to check funding bodies' closing dates. Most bodies usually expect you to have a provisional offer from the University before you apply for a studentship, scholarship or award.

Step 3. Supporting documents

If you cannot upload supporting documents, there is often a field for you to say why so you can still submit your application; we will then give you instructions on how to add documents via an online portal, these usually include:

  • evidence of qualifications (certificates or transcripts);
  • evidence of English language ability, if English is not your first language (some test results are only valid for two years, your test report will need to be valid on the start date of your course);
  • a research proposal, always check the department website for instructions as these vary;
  • check the department website for additional requirements (for example, some courses ask for specific information in a personal statement);
  • you may need two references, they will be contacted and asked to submit a reference directly to us via our referee portal. We will let you know when they have done this. Make sure your referees are aware in advance as they play a vital part in the assessment of your application.

Complete our online application form for your master's course.

After you apply

Now you've completed your form, here's what happens next.

Frequently asked questions

The application form should be easy to complete but we have some FAQs to help you:

Video: how to create an online account

Video: how to submit an online application.

Once you have created an account, you can start your online application.

What do I do if I've lost my password or it doesn't work?

If you have forgotten your password, you can request a temporary password to be emailed to you, and you can then set a new password.

If your password is not working, make sure it is at least ten characters long and contains one upper case, one lower case, one special character and one number. Such as Testing123%.

Where is the University's Data Protection statement?

There is a Data Protection statement at the top of the page which relates to the information you provide as part of your application.

You can also view the wider University Data Protection statement relating to student data more broadly.

How do I add or change my address?

Click on the 'update' button in the address section to add or change your address.

If you move house after you have applied, you can change your address directly with us using our applicant self-service portal.

You should also inform the admissions team dealing with your application.

What if I don't have a postcode to add?

You need to click on the 'change country' link and select your country.

The address fields will then be formatted appropriately.

The error messages don't make sense, what do I do?

Error messages usually occur if your mandatory information is missing or if requested formats haven't been used. Please check your responses carefully.

If you can’t find the issue, please contact [email protected] and include a screenshot of the page you are having difficulty with.

How do I add my signature at the end of the form?

You need to type in your full name exactly as you typed it when you completed the account set-up process.

If you get an error message, you may need to check what name you used when you first set your account up.

You can resolve this by copying (Ctrl + C) and pasting (Ctrl + V) your name from the 'signed-in as' section on the top left of the screen, into the signature section.
