Overview of academic dress.

The origins of today’s academic dress including the robe, hood and classical cap trace back to the first universities in medieval times. Students wore long, sober clothing reflecting their status in society and identifying them as scholars.Whilst fashions changed, the sense of purpose and propriety evoked by formal academic dress along with practicalities of marking students out in a crowd ensured that the traditional garments were kept.

Many Oxbridge colleges, schools and some ecclesiastical services still use the gown and hood, however it is more commonly seen at degree ceremonies.

PLACING YOUR ORDER

Q. I'm not sure what degree I am on. A. Unfortunately, we are unable to tell you what you have been studying for, please ask your course tutor or the university or college registry.

Q. How can I confirm that my order has been placed? A. You can see if your order has been placed by accessing the Review / Amend order screen which can be entered from the home page drop down menu.

Q. I am unable to print my confirmation e-mail - can I collect my gown without it? A. It is not imperative that you have the printed copy, but take a note of the number - which can be found on the Review / Amend order screen, as it does speed things up at the ceremony, in any event, our representatives will have detailed lists on the day of your ceremony.

Q. What forms of payment do you accept? A. Credit Cards: Visa, Mastercard  Debit cards: Visa Debit, Maestro and Electron

Q. Can I go into my nearest shop to place my order in person? A.  In order for us to process the orders efficiently, orders should be placed via the website or the Call Centre.

Q. Can I go into my nearest shop to have my measurements taken for my outfit? A.  Sorry we do not provide this service in our shops.

ABOUT YOUR GRADUATION OUTFIT

Q. What does 'Height' mean? A. Your height means the measurement from the top of your head to the ground. This can be in metres or feet and inches.

Q. What does full outfit mean? A. Full outfit means all the required items for the award that you are receiving and is usually a gown, hood and hat although this varies according to the institution.

Q. How will I know how to wear the outfit? A. We will help you put it on and ensure you are wearing it correctly.  

WHEN TO PLACE YOUR ORDER

Q. How much notice is required before I book my graduation outfit? A. Please book early to be sure of your order as we cannot always guarantee an order if you leave your booking later than 21 days before your Ceremony (being the date agreed for the Hire outfit to be available). Please check the website to see if the ceremony date option is still available or contact the Call Centre to establish if it is still open to book.

Q. What can I do if I am too late to order my outfit on-line? A. You may be able to place a late order. Go to the enquiry desk in the robing area early on the day of your ceremony and our staff will do their best to help you. We are usually only able to accept cash or cheques at the ceremony. Please note we cannot guarantee we will be able to provide robes for late orders.

DELIVERY, COLLECTION AND RETURNS

Q. When will my purchased outfit arrive? A. This will depend on the type of outfit you have ordered. The dispatch time will be stated on your shopping basket when placing your order on the internet. Please make a note of this.

Q. Where do I collect my outfit from? A. Your university or college has set aside a special area for you to collect your outfit and put it on. Details are normally given to you in your handout regarding ceremony arrangements. Please confirm with your registry.

Q. Will I receive my purchased accessories with my hire outfit? A. Hire orders will be delivered direct to your graduation ceremony. All purchased orders will be delivered to your specified delivery address (not your institution).

Q. When can I collect my outfit? A. Details will have been given to you by your university or college, however as a general rule Ede and Ravenscroft will normally be available to robe you at least two hours before the ceremony.

Q. What does Extra Time mean? A. The normal hire fee is usually for the ceremony day (or evening if it is just an evening ceremony). This enables you to wear the outfit for your graduation ceremony and have private and official photos taken if you want. If you opt for Extra 7 days hire you can take the robes away from where you had your graduation ceremony and keep them for one week, returning them to us in the postage paid bag provided. Instructions regarding the use of this bag are listed inside the bag. You must obtain proof of posting. You are not allowed to take your outfit out of the United Kingdom.

Q. Can I return my outfit to my nearest Ede & Ravenscroft shop? A.  Please return all postal items as requested to the address as stated in the back of your gown.

Preparing for graduation

Graduation Registration for our summer and winter graduations is now open . if you have not received an email by  Monday, 15 April then please email us .

You must register your intention to graduate whether you wish to attend a graduation ceremony or not. Registration is important to verify that your personal details are correct. If you have not registered then you will not be invited to graduate in 2024, regardless of whether you have been awarded at a Progression and Awards Board, and you will not receive your parchment.

Register your intention to graduate, using the link in your registration email, no later than Monday, 13 May . You must do this in order to receive your parchment, regardless of whether you wish to attend a graduation ceremony or not.

There will be no changes made to graduation registrations after this date. If you do not register you will not be able to graduate in 2024, regardless of whether you have been awarded at a Progression and Awards Board.

Ensure all outstanding tuition fees are paid and cleared by  Monday 20 th May 2024  for inclusion in the summer graduation ceremonies and Monday 23rd September 2024 for inclusion in the winter graduation ceremonies. Failure to clear debt by the above dates will mean that you will not be able to graduate, you will not be invited to attend a ceremony or receive your parchment.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have confirmed with the Finance Office that you have no debt outstanding. You can make payment via the student portal under My Finance.

Pass all outstanding modules and have your award eligibility confirmed by Thursday 13th June 2024 for undergraduate awards and  taught postgraduate awards for inclusion in summer ceremonies.

You must graduate at the first set of ceremonies available to you after your award is confirmed by a Progression and Awards Board. You cannot choose what ceremony to graduate at. For those who are due to graduate at a summer ceremony it is not possible to defer to a winter ceremony if you already have a confirmed award by the dates mentioned in step three.

You must register in order to receive your parchment whether you wish to attend a graduation ceremony in person or not attend (graduate in absentia) and have your parchment posted to your home address. If you do not complete graduation registration by Monday 13th May 2024 then you will not be eligible to graduate in 2024, regardless of whether you have been awarded at a Progression and Awards Board.

You must ensure that all academic debt has been paid and cleared by Monday 20 th May 2024 for inclusion in the summer ceremonies. If you have any outstanding debt past this deadline you will not be invited to attend a ceremony or receive your parchment, even if you are eligible. Any students with academic debt after this deadline will be removed from any graduation listings and ceremonies.

Summer 2024

Enrolment for Summer 2024 Graduations is now closed.

If you have enrolled for Summer graduation you must now be qualified by your School by 11th June to be eligible to graduate. 

If you missed Summer enrolment, you should now enrol for Winter graduations during the Winter enrolment period.

Winter 2024

Enrolment will take place between Monday, 9 September 2024 and Friday, 27 September 2024.  You must enrol to graduate, even if you are not attending your ceremony and are graduating in-absentia.

Harvard student goes off script in commencement speech to rip school as more than 1,000 walk out

A  Harvard University commencement speaker went dramatically off script to blast the Ivy League school for barring a handful of those involved in a disruptive anti-Israeli encampment — before more than 1,000 students also staged a walkout.

Shruthi Kumar, the Harvard senior selected to deliver the English address Thursday, pulled out a piece of paper containing controversial remarks hidden up the sleeve of her gown and took aim at university leaders over the decision to deny more than a dozen students their diplomas.

“As I stand here today, I must take a moment to recognize my peers—the 13 undergraduates in the class of 2024 that will not graduate today,” Kumar told the crowd, according to a video posted by Harvard.

“I am deeply disappointed by the intolerance for freedom of speech and their right to civil disobedience on campus,” she said of the protests, which famously replaced the American flag with a Palestinian one .

More than 1,000 people then staged a walkout to decry the disqualification of the 13 students, with many chanting “let them walk,” The Harvard Crimson reports.

Others held up signs, including a large banner saying “Stop the genocide.”

Harvard last week suspended five students and sanctioned more than 20 others for taking part in an anti-Israel campus encampment, which ended earlier this month.

The group included the 13 seniors banned by the school’s highest governing body from getting their diplomas or walking at the ceremony.

Despite widespread anger at the encampment, Kumar called the school’s punishment proof that “this semester our freedom of speech and our expressions of solidarity became punishable.”

“This is about civil rights and upholding democratic principles,” she continued. “The students have spoken. The faculty have spoken. Harvard, do you hear us?”

Kumar received cheers and a standing ovation from the crowd, including some of the faculty.

Predicting such protests, Harvard had modified the traditional schedule, with members of the governing body foregoing the usual procession to instead take the stage unceremoniously through a side entrance, the student paper said.

Still, interim Harvard President Alan Garber was booed when he started the ceremony by referencing the protests that brought chaos to campus, according to the Crimson.

“As our ceremony proceeds, some among us may choose to take the liberty of expressing themselves to draw attention to events unfolding in the wider world,” Garber said.

“It is their right to do so … But it is their responsibility to do so with our community — and this occasion — in mind.”

Harvard’s governing board said that each of the 13 were found to have violated the university’s policies by their conduct during the encampment protest.

“In coming to this determination, we note that the express provisions of the Harvard College Student Handbook state that students who are not in good standing are not eligible for degrees,” the Harvard Corporation said in a written statement.

Harvard said it planned to confer 1,539 degrees to Harvard College students. The 13 excluded would get them fast-tracked if they proved successful in appeals, the school said.

“We understand that the inability to graduate is consequential for students and their families,” it said.
