Essays About Love

Defining love may not be as easy as you think. While it seems simple, love is an abstract concept with multiple potential meanings. Exploring these meanings and then creating your own definition of love can make an engaging essay topic.

To do this, first, consider the various conventional definitions of love. Then, compare and contrast them until you come up with your own definition of love.

One essay about love you could tackle is describing and analyzing a favorite love story. This story could be from a fiction tale or real life. It could even be your love story.

As you analyze and explain the love story, talk about the highs and lows of love. Showcase the hard and great parts of this love story, then end the essay by talking about what real love looks like (outside the flowers and chocolates).

Essays About Love: What true love looks like?

This essay will explore what true love looks like. With this essay idea, you could contrast true love with the romantic love often shown in movies. This contrast would help the reader see how true love looks in real life.

An essay about what true love looks like could allow you to explore this kind of love in many different facets. It would allow you to discuss whether or not someone is, in fact, in true love. You could demonstrate why saying “I love you” is not enough through the essay.

There seems to be something ingrained in human nature to seek love. This fact could make an interesting essay on love and its meaning, allowing you to explore why this might be and how it plays out in human relationships.

Because humans seem to gravitate toward committed relationships, you could argue that we are hard-wired for love. But, again, this is an essay option that has room for growth as you develop your thoughts.

There are many different types of love. For example, while you can have romantic love between a couple, you may also have family love among family members and love between friends. Each of these types of love has a different expression, which could lend itself well to an interesting essay topic.

Writing an essay that compares and contrasts the different types of love would allow you to delve more deeply into the concept of love and what makes up a loving relationship.

What does love mean? This question is not as easy to answer as you might think. However, this essay topic could give you quite a bit of room to develop your ideas about love.

While exploring this essay topic, you may discover that love means different things to different people. For some, love is about how someone makes another person feel. To others, it is about actions performed. By exploring this in an essay, you can attempt to define love for your readers.

What can love make people do? This question could lend itself well to an essay topic. The power of love is quite intense, and it can make people do things they never thought they could or would do.

With this love essay, you could look at historical examples of love, fiction stories about love relationships, or your own life story and what love had the power to do. Then, at the end of your essay, you can determine how powerful love is.

The idea of a soul mate is someone who you are destined to be with and love above all others. This essay topic would allow you to explore whether or not each individual has a soul mate.

If you determine that they do, you could further discuss how you would identify that soul mate. How can you tell when you have found “the one” right for you? Expanding on this idea could create a very interesting and unique essay.

Essays About Love: Determine if all relationships should experience a break-up

Break-ups seem inevitable, and strong relationships often come back together afterward. Yet are break-ups truly inevitable? Or are they necessary to create a strong bond? This idea could turn into a fascinating essay topic if you look at both sides of the argument.

On the one hand, you could argue that the break-up experience shows you whether or not your relationship can weather difficult times. On the other hand, you could argue that breaking up damages the trust you’re working to build. Regardless of your conclusion, you can build a solid essay off of this topic idea.

Love, at first sight is a common theme in romance stories, but is it possible? Explore this idea in your essay. You will likely find that love, at first sight, is nothing more than infatuation, not genuine love.

Yet you may discover that sometimes, love, at first sight, does happen. So, determine in your essay how you can differentiate between love and infatuation if it happens to you. Then, conclude with your take on love at first sight and if you think it is possible.

The love between a parent and child is much different than the love between a pair of lovers. This type of love is one-sided, with care and self-sacrifice on the parent’s side. However, the child’s love is often unconditional.

Exploring this dynamic, especially when contrasting parental love with romantic love, provides a compelling essay topic. You would have the opportunity to define this type of love and explore what it looks like in day-to-day life.

Most people want to fall in love and enjoy a loving relationship, but does love have a downside? In an essay, you can explore the disadvantages of love and show how even one of life’s greatest gifts is not without its challenges.

This essay would require you to dig deep and find the potential downsides of love. However, if you give it a little thought, you should be able to discuss several. Finally, end the essay by telling the reader whether or not love is worth it despite the many challenges.

Love is blind is a popular phrase that indicates love allows someone not to see another person’s faults. But is love blind, or is it simply a metaphor that indicates the ability to overlook issues when love is at the helm.

If you think more deeply about this quote, you will probably determine that love is not blind. Rather, love for someone can overshadow their character flaws and shortcomings. When love is strong, these things fall by the wayside. Discuss this in your essay, and draw your own conclusion to decide if love is blind.

When someone falls in love, their body feels specific hormonal and chemical changes. These changes make it easier to want to spend time with the person. Yet they can be fascinating to study, and you could ask whether or not love is just chemical reactions or something more.

Grab a science book or two and see if you can explore these physiological changes from love. From the additional sweating to the flushing of the face, you will find quite a few chemical changes that happen when someone is in love.

Love feels like a positive emotion that does not have many ethical concerns, but this is not true. Several ethical questions come from the world of love. Exploring these would make for an interesting and thoughtful essay.

For example, you could discuss if it is ethically acceptable to love an object or even oneself or love other people. You could discuss if it is appropriate to enter into a physical relationship if there is no love present or if love needs to come first. There are many questions to explore with this love essay.

If you choose to love someone, is heartbreak inevitable? This question could create a lengthy essay. However, some would argue that it is because either your object of affection will eventually leave you through a break-up or death.

Yet do these actions have to cause heartbreak, or are they simply part of the process? Again, this question lends itself well to an essay because it has many aspects and opinions to explore.

Literature is full of stories of love. You could choose a genre, like mythology or science fiction, and explore the role of love in that particular genre. With this essay topic, you may find many instances where love is a vital central theme of the work.

Keep in mind that in some genres, like myths, love becomes a driving force in the plot, while in others, like historical fiction, it may simply be a background part of the story. Therefore, the type of literature you choose for this essay would significantly impact the way your essay develops.

Most people want to fall in love, but is love freeing or oppressing? The answer may depend on who your loved ones are. Love should free individuals to authentically be who they are, not tie them into something they are not.

Yet there is a side of love that can be viewed as oppressive, deepening on your viewpoint. For example, you should stay committed to just that individual when you are in a committed relationship with someone else. Is this freeing or oppressive? Gather opinions through research and compare the answers for a compelling essay.

You can easily find stories of people that did foolish things for love. These stories could translate into interesting and engaging essays. You could conclude the answer to whether or not love makes people do foolish things.

Your answer will depend on your research, but chances are you will find that, yes, love makes people foolish at times. Then you could use your essay to discuss whether or not it is still reasonable to think that falling in love is a good thing, although it makes people act foolishly at times.

Most fiction works have love in them in some way. This may not be romantic love, but you will likely find characters who love something or someone.

Use that fact to create an essay. Pick your favorite story, either through film or written works, and explore what love looks like in that work. Discuss the character development, storyline, and themes and show how love is used to create compelling storylines.

How to Name a Love Story

Choose Something Memorable

When crafting a story title, one of the most important things to remember is that it should be memorable. Your readers should be able to easily recall your title so they can recommend it to their friends or family members.

It’s also important that your title stands out from other similar titles in its genre. For example, if you’re writing a novel about love and loss, don’t choose something generic like “Love and Loss.” Instead, try something unique that stands out from similar titles, such as “The Unrequited Love Affair.”

Be Appropriate

Your story title should always remain appropriate in content and tone. You want to ensure that your audience feels comfortable reading your work and doesn’t feel they need to censor themselves when sharing it with others. Also, be aware of cultural sensitivities—avoid language or imagery that certain groups could misinterpret or deem offensive.

Use Writing Prompts

If you’re struggling with a good title for your story, why not try using writing prompts? Writing prompts provide an easy way to generate ideas for titles quickly and effectively. Type in “writing prompt” into Google or another search engine, and you’ll find plenty of websites that provide ideas for stories , characters, settings, and even titles!

How to Write a Love Story

Create an engaging plot.

The plot is the backbone of your story and should be carefully developed to make sure it keeps readers engaged. Start by establishing the setting in which your story takes place and introducing the main characters. Then, determine what obstacles or challenges stand in the way of your characters getting together–these could be external or internal forces that need to be overcome before they can have their happily ever after.

Finally, consider where you want your characters’ relationship and how you plan to get them there. This will help ensure that your plot doesn’t feel stagnant or predictable as it develops.

Develop Your Characters

Your characters should be dynamic and layered so readers can relate to them and understand why they’re going through this particular journey of finding love. Spend some time thinking about each character’s backstory and motivations, so you know who they are as individuals before they become part of a couple.

Make sure they each have unique personalities, strengths, weaknesses, flaws, etc., so that readers are invested in their relationship even when it hits its bumps.

Create Intense Conflict

No good love story is complete without conflict! Readers need to see why these two people have difficulty connecting and what ultimately helps them overcome those obstacles (which could range from family disapproval or career ambitions to personal trauma).

Conflict is also essential for adding tension throughout your story–without it; your narrative may come off as too saccharine-sweet or trite. Give your characters something real to fight for!

Use Description Liberally

Description is essential for helping readers visualize the setting of your story and feel like they’re right there alongside your characters as they fall in love with one another. Incorporate sensory details (such as sights, smells, tastes) into meaningful moments between your two protagonists; not only will this help bring their relationship alive on the page, but it will also help convey important themes within your narrative arc—perhaps even making it more emotionally resonant than if you had relied solely on dialogue alone!

What Makes a Good Hook for a Love Story

Set the mood with a strong opening sentence.

The opening sentence of your love story should set the tone of the whole tale. Whether you want to start with an intense action scene or an emotional monologue, choose one technique and stick with it throughout the book.

For example, if you open with a dramatic action scene, keep up that intensity throughout the book by including suspenseful moments. This will keep your readers engaged and excited about what will happen next.

Introduce Your Characters Immediately

It’s important to introduce both of your main characters as early as possible to give your readers an idea of who they are and why they should care about them. You can describe each character’s physical traits—hair color, eye color, height—and their personality traits—outgoing or shy? Funny or serious? Laid back or ambitious?—so readers can start forming connections with them.

Create Tension Between Your Characters

Your characters don’t have to be immediately smitten with each other; in fact, creating tension between them can be even more interesting for readers! Have one character disagree with the other about something important or have one character think they know better than the other—whatever it is, make sure there is some friction between them from page one. This will give readers something tangible to root against and make them eager to see how things turn out.

What Makes a Book Title Attractive

Conveying meaning and emotion.

It’s essential to make sure your title conveys meaning and emotion in as few words as possible. Your title should evoke emotion from your reader, whether it be curiosity, excitement, or joy. An excellent way to do this is by using descriptive words that set the tone for your book and express its theme. Additionally, avoid generic titles like “The Big Adventure,” which could describe any number of books. Instead, opt for something more specific like “The Pirate’s Treasure Hunt” or “The Witch’s Curse,” which will immediately pique the reader’s interest.

Being Unique

Similarly, make sure your title stands out among other books in its genre by being unique. This means avoiding clichés and overused phrases such as “A Journey Through Time” or “Tales from Another Land.”

To ensure you come up with something original, brainstorm different combinations of words that relate to your story and then try them out until you find one that resonates with you. Additionally, if you need help coming up with ideas, plenty of online tools are available to help generate titles for books, so don’t hesitate to use them!

Using Imagery

Imagery can also be constructive when writing an attention-grabbing book title. Words such as “whisper” or “frosty” can evoke vivid mental images that draw readers in even before reading the story’s synopsis. For example, instead of calling your novel “The Werewolf,” why not call it “Howling Under The Moon”? This is much more evocative than simply naming it after the creature itself. It gives readers immediate suspense and intrigue about what might happen in the story !

What is love essay: 250 words

Lao Tzu once said, “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” Indeed, love can transform individuals, relationships, and our world.

A word of immense depth and countless interpretations, love has always fascinated philosophers, poets, and ordinary individuals. This  emotion breaks boundaries and has a super power to change lives. But what is love, actually?

It’s a force we feel in countless ways. It is the warm embrace of a parent, filled with care and unwavering support. It is the gentle touch of a lover, sparking a flame that ignites passion and desire. Love is the kind words of a friend, offering solace and understanding in times of need. It is the selfless acts of compassion and empathy that bind humanity together.

Love is not confined to romantic relationships alone. It is found in the family bonds, the connections we forge with friends, and even the compassion we extend to strangers. Love is a thread that weaves through the fabric of our lives, enriching and nourishing our souls.

However, love is not without its complexities. It can be both euphoric and agonizing, uplifting and devastating. Love requires vulnerability, trust, and the willingness to embrace joy and pain. It is a delicate balance between passion and compassion, independence and interdependence.

Finally, the essence of love may be elusive to define with mere words. It is an experience that surpasses language and logic, encompassing a spectrum of emotions and actions. Love is a profound connection that unites us all, reminding us of our shared humanity and the capacity for boundless compassion.

A 500-word essay on why I love you

Trying to encapsulate why I love you in a mere 500 words is impossible. My love for you goes beyond the confines of language, transcending words and dwelling in the realm of emotions, connections, and shared experiences. Nevertheless, I shall endeavor to express the depth and breadth of my affection for you.

First and foremost, I love you for who you are. You possess a unique blend of qualities and characteristics that captivate my heart and mind. Your kindness and compassion touch the lives of those around you, and I am grateful to be the recipient of your unwavering care and understanding. Your intelligence and wit constantly challenge me to grow and learn, stimulating my mind and enriching our conversations. You have a beautiful spirit that radiates warmth and joy, and I am drawn to your vibrant energy.

I love the way you make me feel. When I am with you, I feel a sense of comfort and security that allows me to be my true self. Your presence envelops me in a cocoon of love and acceptance, where I can express my thoughts, fears, and dreams without fear of judgment. Your support and encouragement inspire me to pursue my passions and overcome obstacles. With you by my side, I feel empowered to face the world, knowing I have a partner who believes in me.

I love the memories we have created together. From the laughter-filled moments of shared adventures to the quiet and intimate conversations, every memory is etched in my heart. Whether exploring new places, indulging in our favorite activities, or simply enjoying each other’s company in comfortable silence, each experience reinforces our bond. Our shared memories serve as a foundation for our relationship, a testament to the depth of our connection and the love that binds us.

I love your quirks and imperfections. Your true essence shines through these unique aspects! Your little traits make me smile and remind me of the beautiful individual you are. I love how you wrinkle your nose when you laugh, become lost in thought when reading a book, and even sing off-key in the shower. These imperfections make you human, relatable, and utterly lovable.

I love the future we envision together. We support each other’s goals, cheering one another on as we navigate the path toward our dreams. The thought of building a life together, creating a home filled with love and shared experiences, fills my heart with anticipation and excitement. The future we imagine is one that I am eager to explore with you by my side.

In conclusion, the reasons why I love you are as vast and varied as the universe itself. It is a love that defies logic and surpasses the limitations of language. From the depths of my being, I love you for the person you are, the way you make me feel, the memories we cherish, your quirks and imperfections, and the future we envision together. My love for you is boundless, unconditional, and everlasting.

Love consists of a set of emotions, behaviors, and beliefs with strong feelings of affection. A person might say that they love their dog. The very concept of love is different for each individual as it may happen to each person in a particular way. We can say that it is more than just liking someone, it is an emotional attachment.

Though love is important in every way still, let us have a look how this intense feeling relates to our bodies as well as to our relations:

1. Hormone of Love

Love helps our body to produce oxytocin, the feel-good hormone and is probably one of the best antidepressants. It makes any individual healthier especially emotionally.

2. Basic Necessity

Love is one of the most basic human needs. Expressing it to others benefits both, the person who delivers it as well as the recipient. One of the ways it can be shown to close ones is as contact comfort. Several experiments show that the babies who were not given contact comfort, especially during the first six months, grow up to be psychologically damaged.

3. Makes Relations Healthy

In a relationship, Love is the binding element that keeps it strong and makes it grow. The individuals in love, are much more emotionally connected making them connected on a soulful level. The comfort in that is unparalleled.

Love is the very essence of existence. Life without love is not worthy of being lived. Before we are even aware, love is showered on us each day by our mothers, fathers, siblings, etc. It is a unique gift that helps us shape our lives. Without it, the society would perish. A Frightening Love Story of a Woman

"A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner is a fictional short story that took place during the Reconstruction era at Jefferson, Mississippi. This story is not told in chronological order. Instead, Faulkner beings his story by talking about the protagonist's, Emily, funeral or her death. He then proceeds to talk about events that happened throughout her life. However, in the end, he goes back to talk about her death. To my understanding, "A Rose for Emily" is about a tragic […]

They used their poetry to discuss the gender inequality of their societies and how unfair a society led by men really was in. It dictated the […]

Love is more Powerful than Hatred

About a century ago, the Swiss psychiatrist Bleuler, who worked in Zurich and co-authored with Sigmund Freud, coined the term "ambivalence of feelings" - that is, duality in relation to a person or a phenomenon, its simultaneous acceptance and rejection. Bleuler believed that if conflicting feelings replace each other unmotivated quickly, we are dealing with a schizophrenic. But his colleague Freud believed that love and hate at the same time is an innate property of any human nature, and only […]

It is an autobiographical novel in a certain degree. This essay attempts to prove Jane is a real feminist through the analysis of […]

Maurice (1971) is the last novel that Forster wrote; its main theme was the homosexual love between males. Owing to the above social aspects, Foster chose to keep the book from the public […]

Hamlet’s Love for Ophelia

We know that the desire to love and care for others is a hard-wired and deep-hearted because the fulfillment of this wish increases the happiness level. Expressing love for others benefits not just the recipient of affection, but also the person who delivers it. The need to be loved can be considered as one of our most basic and fundamental needs.

One of the forms that this need can take is contact comfort. It is the desire to be held and touched. So there are many experiments showing that babies who are not having contact comfort, especially during the first six months, grow up to be psychologically damaged.

Significance of Love

It is also a fact that the most depressed people don’t love themselves and they do not feel loved by others. They also become self-focused and hence making themselves less attractive to others.

It is a scientific fact that society functions better when there is a certain sense of community. Compassion and love are the glue for society. Hence without it, there is no feeling of togetherness for further evolution and progress. Love is the Greatest Wealth in Life

Love is the greatest wealth in life because we buy things we love for our happiness. For example, we build our dream house and purchase a favorite car to attract love. Being loved in a remote environment is a better experience than been hated even in the most advanced environment.

Love or Money

Love should be given more importance than money as love is always everlasting. Money is important to live, but having a true companion you can always trust should come before that. If you love each other, you will both work hard to help each other live an amazing life together.

Love has been a vital reason we do most things in our life. Before we could know ourselves, we got showered by it from our close relatives like mothers , fathers , siblings, etc. Thus love is a unique gift for shaping us and our life. Therefore, we can say that love is a basic need of life. It plays a vital role in our life, society, and relation. It gives us energy and motivation in a difficult time. Title: Love – The Universal Language of Connection and Fulfillment

Introduction :

Love is a powerful and universal emotion that transcends cultural, geographical, and linguistic boundaries. It is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that has been the subject of artistic, philosophical, and scientific exploration throughout human history. Love is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, shaping our relationships, influencing our choices, and bringing joy, fulfillment, and meaning to our lives. In this essay, we will delve into the various dimensions of love, its impact on our well-being, its different forms, and its role in fostering connection and personal growth.

Love and Connection

Love is intricately linked to the idea of connection. It is a force that binds us together, fostering deep relationships and creating a sense of belonging. Love enables us to form emotional connections with others, resulting in companionship, support, and mutual understanding. It allows us to experience empathy and compassion, connecting us on an emotional level and forging bonds of trust and loyalty. Love nurtures relationships, creating an environment of emotional safety and acceptance, where individuals can express themselves fully and be embraced for who they are.

Forms of Love

Love manifests in various forms, each with its own unique characteristics and dynamics. Romantic love is often the first form of love that comes to mind, characterized by intense passion, attraction, and a desire for emotional and physical intimacy. It is a deep connection between two individuals, rooted in shared values, interests, and mutual respect.

Love for family is another powerful form of love. It encompasses the bond between parents and children, siblings, and extended family members. Family love is often unconditional, built on a foundation of support, sacrifice, and a shared history. It offers a sense of belonging, security, and the comfort of knowing that one is part of a loving and nurturing unit.

Love for friends is a special kind of bond that goes beyond blood relations. Friends become our chosen family, offering companionship, laughter, and a support system outside of our immediate relatives. Friendship love is built on trust, shared experiences, and mutual respect. It is a source of emotional support, encouragement, and the joy of companionship.

Love for humanity is a broader form of love that transcends individual relationships. It encompasses compassion, empathy, and a sense of responsibility towards the well-being and dignity of all human beings. This form of love drives individuals to contribute to the betterment of society, fight for social justice, and promote equality and inclusivity.

Love and Personal Growth

Love has the power to transform individuals and facilitate personal growth. It encourages self-reflection, as we learn about our own strengths, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities through our connections with others. Love challenges us to become better versions of ourselves, as we strive to be more patient, understanding, and supportive in our relationships. It teaches us important lessons about forgiveness, empathy, and compromise.

Love also provides a source of inspiration and motivation. When we feel loved and supported, we gain the confidence to pursue our dreams, take risks, and explore our potential. Love provides a sense of security and a safe space for personal exploration, allowing us to embrace our true selves and express our authentic thoughts and emotions.

Furthermore, love fosters resilience in the face of adversity. It gives us the strength to overcome challenges, as we draw upon the love and support of those who care for us. Love provides a source of comfort and emotional stability, helping us navigate difficult times with resilience and determination.

Love and Well-being

Love plays a vital role in our overall well-being and mental health. Studies have shown that individuals who experience love and emotional support tend to have lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Love provides a buffer against the challenges of life, offering emotional reassurance, a sense of belonging, and a feeling of being understood and valued. Love also contributes to our physical health. The emotional support and connection that love brings can have positive effects on our immune system, cardiovascular health, and overall longevity. Love promotes a sense of happiness, contentment, and a positive outlook on life, all of which contribute to improved well-being.

Furthermore, love encourages positive social interactions and a sense of community. It fosters social connections, strengthens social support networks, and reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation. Love promotes a sense of belonging and connectedness to others, which is essential for our mental and emotional well-being.

Love and Cultural Expression

Love has been a central theme in art, literature, music, and various cultural expressions throughout history. Artists and creatives have explored the depth and complexity of love, capturing its essence through different mediums. Love has inspired countless poems, songs, paintings, and sculptures, reflecting its profound impact on human experience and emotion.

Cultural norms and traditions also shape the expression of love in different societies. Love rituals, such as weddings, celebrations, and ceremonies, are often an integral part of cultural practices. These rituals symbolize and reinforce the commitment, connection, and bond shared by individuals and communities.

Love and its Challenges

While love brings immense joy and fulfillment, it is not without its challenges. Love requires effort, communication, and compromise. It involves vulnerability, as we open ourselves up to the possibility of rejection, heartbreak, and loss. Love requires us to navigate differences, conflicts, and changing dynamics within relationships. However, it is through these challenges that love grows stronger, as individuals learn and grow together, developing deeper levels of understanding and resilience.

Conclusion :

Love is a fundamental and universal force that permeates every aspect of our lives. It connects us to others, fosters personal growth, contributes to our well-being, and shapes our cultural expressions. Love brings joy, meaning, and a sense of purpose to our existence. It is a language that transcends barriers, bridging divides, and uniting individuals and communities. As we navigate life’s complexities, love offers us solace, support, and the transformative power to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

How We Write About Love

title for essay on love

By Daniel Jones

  • Feb. 5, 2015

A few months ago, I read several articles touting the health benefits of writing in a deeply personal way. Studies had shown that writing introspectively on a regular basis can lead to lowered blood pressure, improved liver function and even the accelerated healing of postoperative wounds. The study’s subjects had been told to write for short periods each day about turbulent emotional experiences.

I bet a lot of them wrote about love. As the editor of this column, I have spent much of the last decade reading stories of people’s turbulent emotional experiences. They all involved love in one way or another.

Which isn’t so surprising. Who hasn’t been stirred up by love? But these writers had spun their experiences into stories and sent them here, where more than 99 percent must be turned away.

Although the would-be contributors may be happy to learn of the surprising health benefits of their writing, I think they hoped for a more glamorous reward than improved liver function.

Lately I have been thinking about those tens of thousands of passed-over stories and all the questions and lessons about love they represent. When taken together, what does all this writing reveal about us, or about love? Here’s what I have found.

First, and most basic: How we write about love depends on how old we are.

The young overwhelmingly write with a mixture of anxiety and hope. Their stories ask: What is it going to be for me?

Those in midlife are more often driven to their keyboards by feelings of malaise and disillusionment. Their stories ask: Is this really what it is for me?

And older people almost always write from a place of appreciation, regardless of how difficult things may be. Their message: All things considered, I feel pretty lucky.

In writing about love, the story of how we met looms large because a lot of us believe, validly or not, that a good meeting story bodes well for the relationship.

What do we consider to be a good meeting story? When it involves chance more than effort. You get bonus points if the chance encounter suggests compatibility, like mistakenly wheeling off with each other’s shopping carts at Whole Foods because your items had so much overlap, you got the carts mixed up.

“I get those beets all the time!” “You like Erewhon Supergrains, too?”

Pretty soon it’s time to get a room.

It seems the harder we work at finding love, the more prone we are to second-guessing the results. High-volume online daters worry about this, along with those who routinely attend singles events.

The fear is we may force things or compromise after pushing so hard for so long. We may admire hard work in most endeavors, but we admire laziness when it comes to finding love. (If you manage to stay together over the long haul, however, it will be because of effort, not chance.)

When some people write about love, they can’t find the right words to capture the intensity of their feelings, so they rely on stock terms that are best avoided. These include (but are not limited to): amazing, gorgeous, devastating, crushed, smitten, soul mate and electrifying.

Popular phrases include: “meet cute,” “heart pounded,” “heart melted,” “I’ll always remember,” “I’ll never forget” and “Reader, I married him.” Then there is everyone’s favorite stock word regardless of subject: literally. As in, “our date was literally electrifying.”

Women and men may feel love similarly, but they write about it differently.

A lot of men’s stories seem tinged by regret and nostalgia. They wish previous relationships hadn’t ended or romantic opportunities hadn’t slipped away. They lament not having been more emotionally open with lovers, wives, parents and children.

Women are more inclined to write with restlessness. They want to figure love out. Many keep mental lists of their expectations, detailing the characteristics of their hoped-for partner with alarming specificity and then evaluating how a new romantic interest does or doesn’t match that type.

They write something like, “I always pictured myself with someone taller, a guy with cropped brown hair and wire-rim glasses who wears khakis or jeans, the kind of person who would bring me tea in bed and read the Sunday paper with me on the couch.”

Men almost never describe the characteristics of their ideal partner in this way. Even if they have a specific picture in mind, few will put that vision to paper. I wonder if they’re embarrassed to.

Another list women frequently pull together is “The List of Flawed Men,” in which they dismiss each man they have gone out with over the last year with a single phrase. There was the slob with the sideburns, the med student who smoked too much pot, the gentle Texan who made felt hats but couldn’t commit, and the physically affectionate finance guy who always dropped her hand when he saw his friends.

This series of bad encounters has left them exasperated to the point of hopelessness, so they try to see the humor in it.

Men rarely compose that kind of list, either. In this case, I wonder if it’s because they’re afraid to, not wanting to be seen as belittling women. In general, men write more cautiously about women than the other way around.

Love stories are full of romantic delusion, idealizing love to an unhealthy degree. But in the accounts I see, men and women delude themselves in opposite directions.

A woman is more likely to believe her romantic ideal awaits somewhere in the future, where her long-held fantasy becomes a flesh-and-blood reality.

A man’s romantic ideal typically exists somewhere in the past in the form of an actual person he loved but let go of, or who got away. And he keeps going back to her in his mind, and probably also on Facebook and Instagram, thinking, “What if?”

I don’t know if men are worse than women when it comes to romantic rejection; they are clearly worse when it comes to literary rejection. Even though only 20 percent of submissions come from men, they send more than 90 percent of the angry emails I receive in response to being turned down. To these men, no does not mean no. No means the start of an inquiry as to how this possibly could have happened.

One man sneered at me: “You didn’t even read it, dude.”

To which I replied, sincerely: “Dude, I totally did.”

Writing about love can be similar to falling in love in that we must be as vulnerable on the page as we are in person when revealing ourselves to someone we hope will love us back. That means exposing our flaws and weaknesses and trusting we will be seen as more appealing, not less, for having done so.

Good writing about love features the same virtues that define a good relationship: honesty, generosity, open-mindedness, curiosity, humor and self-deprecation. Bad writing about love suffers from the same flaws that define a bad relationship: dishonesty, withholding, defensiveness, blame, pettiness and egotism.

It has been remarkable to watch the evolution in stories I have received from gay and lesbian writers. A decade ago, their stories focused on issues of marginalization, identity, coming out, and of strains with family members. Within a few years, their focus had turned overtly political in the fight for equality and marriage.

Today, gay writers have largely shed that baggage. They write about looking for love, marrying, starting a family, being a parent, even getting divorced. Sexual orientation that had once been central is now incidental. Which seems like a nice change.

With Valentine’s Day near and the right words about love always so hard to find, let me close by simply wishing you an amazing celebration of electrifying romance you never forget and always remember.

Love, in its essence, is an exploration of the depths of the human heart, a journey into the soul’s innermost chambers.

In conclusion, love is a multifaceted, transformative, and enduring emotion that shapes our lives in profound and intricate ways. It is the essence of our humanity, a testament to our capacity for empathy, compassion, and connection.

500 Words Essay on Love

The concept of love.

Love, a four-letter word that encapsulates a plethora of emotions, is a universal concept that transcends all barriers. It is a deeply personal and subjective experience, yet it also serves as a communal bond that ties societies together. The complexity of love is such that it can be viewed from various perspectives, including biological, psychological, and philosophical.

Biological Perspective of Love

From a biological standpoint, love is a potent cocktail of chemicals. Neurotransmitters such as oxytocin and dopamine are primarily responsible for the feelings of attachment and pleasure associated with love. The release of these chemicals in the brain creates a sense of euphoria, leading to the emotional highs that are often associated with romantic love. This biochemical perspective, however, only scratches the surface of the profound complexity of love.

Psychological Perspective of Love

Psychologically, love is a dynamic process that evolves over time. According to Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love, it consists of three components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy refers to feelings of closeness and connectedness, passion involves intense feelings and sexual attraction, while commitment refers to the decision to remain with another. The balance between these components determines the type of love one experiences, ranging from infatuation (passion alone) to consummate love (a balance of all three).

Philosophical Perspective of Love

Philosophically, love is often viewed as an existential need. It is seen as a path to self-discovery and personal growth. The philosopher Plato suggested that love is the pursuit of the whole, a quest for completeness. This idea is echoed in the concept of ‘soulmates’ prevalent in popular culture. Yet, love is not solely about finding the ‘missing piece’; it is also about selflessly caring for another, seeking their happiness, and accepting them unconditionally.

Love as a Social Construct

Beyond individual experience, love is a social construct that shapes societal norms and values. It is a driving force behind many cultural practices and traditions. Love is celebrated through literature, music, and art, reflecting its deep-rooted significance in human society. It is a catalyst for social cohesion, fostering empathy and mutual understanding among individuals.

Conclusion: The Complexity and Importance of Love

In conclusion, love is a multifaceted concept that cannot be confined to a single definition. It is a biological process, a psychological state, a philosophical pursuit, and a societal bond. It is a complex interplay of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that profoundly influences our lives. Despite its complexity, or perhaps because of it, love remains one of the most enduring and universal aspects of the human experience. It is a testament to the depth and breadth of our capacity for connection, compassion, and growth.

How to Make a Good Title for an Essay

The success of an essay heavily depends on its title. This may not come as a surprise given that the essay title is the first aspect to provide the reader with a sneak peek into the text. It piques our interest to read the paper in the first place and gives us a preview of what to expect from the author.

Our research paper writing help prepared a thorough guide on how to title an essay. Here you may find tips and tricks for developing an effective APA or MLA essay title. So, let's dive straight into the article for more exciting details!

Essay Title Format

During your essay writing process, ensure you know the stylistic requirements before beginning an essay. Knowing the format you need to employ is crucial because different style manuals may have varying requirements. Mostly, you could have used an APA or MLA essay title format. Our service, where you can buy essay online , explains these two in more detail below.

Essay Title MLA

If you're required to create an essay title MLA format, check whether your instructor wants you to make a separate cover page. If not, put a heading at the beginning of your work that includes your name, the name of your professor, the course ID, and, lastly, the date.

On the other hand, if you must present a cover page for your essay title MLA, then you need to include the following:

  • The name of the college
  • The title of your paper
  • The subtitle of your paper, if applicable
  • Your first and last name
  • Your teacher or professor's name
  • The class name or course number
  • The date the paper is due

The formatting instructions are as follows:

  • Double-spaced
  • Times New Roman font
  • Size 12 font
  • Apart from very short terms, each word's initial letter should be capitalized. The initial word, however, must always be uppercase.
  • The title page shouldn't include a header with the page numbers.

Essay Title APA

Having discussed the MLA format essay title, let's explore what the APA student title page includes:

  • The paper title
  • Author names
  • Institutional affiliation where the author carried out the study
  • Name and number of the course
  • Professor name
  • Page number

The title of an essay format instructions:

  • double-spaced
  • 1" margins
  • 12-point Times New Roman
  • According to APA, your title should be targeted and brief, without unnecessary words or abbreviations

How to Choose a Good Title for an Essay: Important Qualities

Nobody will read a dull headline. Your title should grab your audience's attention and encourage them to read the rest of the work. As it is one of the initial things readers see, having a strong attention grabber is essential when writing an essay from scratch. To fully understand how to come up with a title for essay that is strong and exciting, let's consider a few following factors:

Employ a Catchy Hook - Usually, the title of essay format follows a similar basic structure, especially if they are used for an academic article. The hook serves as a unique component that attracts the reader. It's a captivating statement informing others about the topic of the essay. You can also explore several types of sentences with examples that can help you develop the ideal hook structure.

Consider Topic Keywords - These are essential terms or expressions pertinent to your subject and help your reader understand the focus and body of your article. These focus keywords should serve as a brief, one- to two-word article summary. You can choose some terms from the research topic your instructor gave you, but after your thesis statement is formed, this is where you should hunt for ideas.

Use a Colon - A colon is frequently used in academic titles to separate concepts and sentences. The standard procedure is to place a clever remark or brief quotation before the colon. Although these beginning words offer flavor, they can be overdone. Because of this, some individuals find using the colon to be repugnant. Therefore be careful not to misuse this method.

Ask a Question - To write essay title that is strong, consider asking a question. But, use it with caution because posing a question will make your tone less formal. As long as the question is suitably phrased to meet the subject of your essay, feel free to employ it. Always check to see if the title question still applies to your points in the essay's body. The thesis statement should be appropriately reflected as well.

Find Inspirational Quotes - There is no formula for selecting essay titles from the textual content. You may get playful and choose any quotation, proverb, or catchphrase that applies to your particular publication and works as a title. You may also create a great essay title using well-known expressions or idioms. Doing so will help your readers relate to and feel more comfortable discussing your subject.

How to Title an Essay headline

Here are other rules for how to create a good title:

  • Title every section of writing: In the process of writing, create interesting subheadings to give your paragraphs an identity. Also, they make your text look ordered and clear.
  • The title must bear the theme of the text: choose a title that summarizes the essay.
  • Capitalize all words with certain exceptions: Capitalize the first letter of every word in the title, but do not capitalize pronouns, articles, prepositions, and conjunctions.
  • Avoid underlining the title: Since topics come in boldface, underlining it will amount to overemphasis. Some authorities say that if you must underline it, do not bolden it.
  • Review the final version of the title: Do not forget to do a quick review of the final version of the title—check for grammar, structure, spelling and so on. Re-read it to determine if the title has given justice to the essay. Confirm if the topic is catchy enough to attract your reader’s attention.
  • When using a colon in your title, follow the rules: Since we are dealing with punctuation rules here, let us talk about the colon – when you have two eye-catching topics, separate them with a colon.

Student’s Guide on How to Come Up with a Title for an Essay

Titling an essay can be easy, but there are a few core principles to be taken into account. The following tips will help you stay on track and avoid any common pitfalls.

Essay Goes First

Never start with a title! If you write it before the rest of the text, it will be based on it, and it should be vice versa. Writing an essay before choosing a heading will give you a clear understanding of what should make sense to the reader. Re-read the finished paper several times to decide on the title. The last thing to create is a title - such strategy will give more time to spend on crafting an essay outline, conducting research, or writing the paper itself.

How to Title an Essay, Complete Guide 2

What are you writing about? What is the style of your paper, and is it an academic essay or a free-form essay like a narrative essay? If the topic of your essay is “Do people who commit heinous crimes deserve the death penalty?” your title should not be humorous; it should be strict and to the point.

If your topic is “Why do people like watching funny cat videos?”, feel free to craft a funny title. Determine the tone of your essay and base your title on it—in consideration with the essay’s topic.

The tone can be:

  • Serious - “The implications of global warming”
  • Funny - “How cats and dogs love their masters”
  • Amiable - “Ways to fight depression”
  • Persuasive - “Why positive thinking is a must have skill for every person”
  • Informative - “Ten rules for creating a chemical at home”

The main goal of a title is to name its paper. There is no need to tell an entire story in the title, or provide any useless details. Sum up your paper in a few words! Another way to do this is to sum up your thesis statement, as it represents the main idea of your essay. Take your thesis and squeeze it into 3-4 words. Imagine that you are creating a title for your favourite newspaper or a slogan for Coca-Cola.

Don’t use fancy words! Take 2-3 main words (keywords), put them together, and stop wasting your time. Avoid jargon and abbreviations.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is something that can help any student and young writer reap benefits. While working on a title, detect the words related to the central idea of the paper. Type the words into the search field of Google and add the word “quote.” A search engine will show numerous web pages with in-text quotations that could be useful. Select the fragment you like. It is possible to learn how to make a creative title for an essay in this way.

Discover several more tips from experts:

  • Never forget the “What,” “Who,” “When,” “How,” “Why,” and “Where” questions (if you start with one of these questions, your title has a chance of getting noticed);
  • Come up with an unexpected image not related to the selected topic;
  • Sometimes, starting with a lie increases the chances of a title being able to catch an eye;
  • Review our catchy essay title examples.

Bad Essay Title Examples

As we discussed how to create an essay title and the specific elements that go into it, you should have a clear idea of how important it is to craft a strong title. In contrast, first, look at weak essay title ideas that can break your paper. This should serve as an example of why your heading should not be like this:

Ex 1: ' How Television Has Changed Our World ' - too vast and not informative

Ex 2: 'The Ara Pacis Augustae' - unclear for those who don't know Latin

Ex 3: 'The Most Poisonous Frog' - does not provide any insight

Ex 4: 'A Brief History of Subcultures and How They Manifest Themselves in a Constantly Changing Socio-Economic Environment' - too long and complicated

Ex 5: 'The Little Mermaid 29 Years Later: Selling a Harmful Sexist Message Through a Naughty Image' - inappropriate language

Good Essay Title Examples

Now that you know what a bad essay title looks like, let's explore good essay title examples as their substitutes. Examine the following essay title format styles that will give you a clear understanding.

Ex 1: ' The Electronic Babysitter: A Social History of Uses of the Television' - gives an exact description of what the essay will be about

Ex 2: ' The Modern Historical Significance of the Ara Pacis Augustae to the City of Rome' - here, the reader can understand what they will be reading about

Ex 3: ' A Deadly Beauty: The Evolution of Skin Coloration and Toxicity of the Poisonous Dart Frog' - clear, informative, and on-point.

Ex 4: 'Reconsidering Counterculture in Contemporary Society' - informative enough and brief

Ex 5: 'The Projection of Gender Stereotypes in The Little Mermaid' - employs appropriate language

Catchy Essay Title Ideas

  • Evaluation (e.g., methodology, meta studies, replicability and validity, human-in-the-loop)
  • General machine learning (supervised, unsupervised, online, active, etc.)
  • Infrastructure (e.g., libraries, improved implementation and scalability, distributed solutions)
  • Machine learning for sciences (e.g. climate, health, life sciences, physics, social sciences)
  • Neuroscience and cognitive science (e.g., neural coding, brain-computer interfaces)
  • Optimization (e.g., convex and non-convex, stochastic, robust)
  • Probabilistic methods (e.g., variational inference, causal inference, Gaussian processes)
  • Reinforcement learning (e.g., decision and control, planning, hierarchical RL, robotics)
  • Social and economic aspects of machine learning (e.g., fairness, interpretability, human-AI interaction, privacy, safety, strategic behavior)
  • Theory (e.g., control theory, learning theory, algorithmic game theory)

Machine learning is a rapidly evolving field, and so we welcome interdisciplinary submissions that do not fit neatly into existing categories.

Authors are asked to confirm that their submissions accord with the NeurIPS code of conduct .

Formatting instructions:   All submissions must be in PDF format, and in a single PDF file include, in this order:

  • The submitted paper
  • Technical appendices that support the paper with additional proofs, derivations, or results
  • The NeurIPS paper checklist

Other supplementary materials such as data and code can be uploaded as a ZIP file

The main text of a submitted paper is limited to nine content pages , including all figures and tables. Additional pages containing references don’t count as content pages. If your submission is accepted, you will be allowed an additional content page for the camera-ready version.

The main text and references may be followed by technical appendices, for which there is no page limit.

The maximum file size for a full submission, which includes technical appendices, is 50MB.

Authors are encouraged to submit a separate ZIP file that contains further supplementary material like data or source code, when applicable.

You must format your submission using the NeurIPS 2024 LaTeX style file which includes a “preprint” option for non-anonymous preprints posted online. Submissions that violate the NeurIPS style (e.g., by decreasing margins or font sizes) or page limits may be rejected without further review. Papers may be rejected without consideration of their merits if they fail to meet the submission requirements, as described in this document.

Paper checklist: In order to improve the rigor and transparency of research submitted to and published at NeurIPS, authors are required to complete a paper checklist . The paper checklist is intended to help authors reflect on a wide variety of issues relating to responsible machine learning research, including reproducibility, transparency, research ethics, and societal impact. The checklist forms part of the paper submission, but does not count towards the page limit.

Please join the NeurIPS 2024 Checklist Assistant Study that will provide you with free verification of your checklist performed by an LLM here . Please see details in our  blog

Supplementary material: While all technical appendices should be included as part of the main paper submission PDF, authors may submit up to 100MB of supplementary material, such as data, or source code in a ZIP format. Supplementary material should be material created by the authors that directly supports the submission content. Like submissions, supplementary material must be anonymized. Looking at supplementary material is at the discretion of the reviewers.

We encourage authors to upload their code and data as part of their supplementary material in order to help reviewers assess the quality of the work. Check the policy as well as code submission guidelines and templates for further details.

Use of Large Language Models (LLMs): We welcome authors to use any tool that is suitable for preparing high-quality papers and research. However, we ask authors to keep in mind two important criteria. First, we expect papers to fully describe their methodology, and any tool that is important to that methodology, including the use of LLMs, should be described also. For example, authors should mention tools (including LLMs) that were used for data processing or filtering, visualization, facilitating or running experiments, and proving theorems. It may also be advisable to describe the use of LLMs in implementing the method (if this corresponds to an important, original, or non-standard component of the approach). Second, authors are responsible for the entire content of the paper, including all text and figures, so while authors are welcome to use any tool they wish for writing the paper, they must ensure that all text is correct and original.

Double-blind reviewing:   All submissions must be anonymized and may not contain any identifying information that may violate the double-blind reviewing policy.  This policy applies to any supplementary or linked material as well, including code.  If you are including links to any external material, it is your responsibility to guarantee anonymous browsing.  Please do not include acknowledgements at submission time. If you need to cite one of your own papers, you should do so with adequate anonymization to preserve double-blind reviewing.  For instance, write “In the previous work of Smith et al. [1]…” rather than “In our previous work [1]...”). If you need to cite one of your own papers that is in submission to NeurIPS and not available as a non-anonymous preprint, then include a copy of the cited anonymized submission in the supplementary material and write “Anonymous et al. [1] concurrently show...”). Any papers found to be violating this policy will be rejected.

OpenReview: We are using OpenReview to manage submissions. The reviews and author responses will not be public initially (but may be made public later, see below). As in previous years, submissions under review will be visible only to their assigned program committee. We will not be soliciting comments from the general public during the reviewing process. Anyone who plans to submit a paper as an author or a co-author will need to create (or update) their OpenReview profile by the full paper submission deadline. Your OpenReview profile can be edited by logging in and clicking on your name in https://openreview.net/ . This takes you to a URL "https://openreview.net/profile?id=~[Firstname]_[Lastname][n]" where the last part is your profile name, e.g., ~Wei_Zhang1. The OpenReview profiles must be up to date, with all publications by the authors, and their current affiliations. The easiest way to import publications is through DBLP but it is not required, see FAQ . Submissions without updated OpenReview profiles will be desk rejected. The information entered in the profile is critical for ensuring that conflicts of interest and reviewer matching are handled properly. Because of the rapid growth of NeurIPS, we request that all authors help with reviewing papers, if asked to do so. We need everyone’s help in maintaining the high scientific quality of NeurIPS.

Please be aware that OpenReview has a moderation policy for newly created profiles: New profiles created without an institutional email will go through a moderation process that can take up to two weeks. New profiles created with an institutional email will be activated automatically.

Venue home page: https://openreview.net/group?id=NeurIPS.cc/2024/Conference

If you have any questions, please refer to the FAQ: https://openreview.net/faq

Abstract Submission: There is a mandatory abstract submission deadline on May 15, 2024, six days before full paper submissions are due. While it will be possible to edit the title and abstract until the full paper submission deadline, submissions with “placeholder” abstracts that are rewritten for the full submission risk being removed without consideration. This includes titles and abstracts that either provide little or no semantic information (e.g., "We provide a new semi-supervised learning method.") or describe a substantively different claimed contribution.  The author list cannot be changed after the abstract deadline. After that, authors may be reordered, but any additions or removals must be justified in writing and approved on a case-by-case basis by the program chairs only in exceptional circumstances.

Ethics review: Reviewers and ACs may flag submissions for ethics review . Flagged submissions will be sent to an ethics review committee for comments. Comments from ethics reviewers will be considered by the primary reviewers and AC as part of their deliberation. They will also be visible to authors, who will have an opportunity to respond.  Ethics reviewers do not have the authority to reject papers, but in extreme cases papers may be rejected by the program chairs on ethical grounds, regardless of scientific quality or contribution.

Preprints: The existence of non-anonymous preprints (on arXiv or other online repositories, personal websites, social media) will not result in rejection. If you choose to use the NeurIPS style for the preprint version, you must use the “preprint” option rather than the “final” option. Reviewers will be instructed not to actively look for such preprints, but encountering them will not constitute a conflict of interest. Authors may submit anonymized work to NeurIPS that is already available as a preprint (e.g., on arXiv) without citing it. Note that public versions of the submission should not say "Under review at NeurIPS" or similar.

Dual submissions: Submissions that are substantially similar to papers that the authors have previously published or submitted in parallel to other peer-reviewed venues with proceedings or journals may not be submitted to NeurIPS. Papers previously presented at workshops are permitted, so long as they did not appear in a conference proceedings (e.g., CVPRW proceedings), a journal or a book.  NeurIPS coordinates with other conferences to identify dual submissions.  The NeurIPS policy on dual submissions applies for the entire duration of the reviewing process.  Slicing contributions too thinly is discouraged.  The reviewing process will treat any other submission by an overlapping set of authors as prior work. If publishing one would render the other too incremental, both may be rejected.

Anti-collusion: NeurIPS does not tolerate any collusion whereby authors secretly cooperate with reviewers, ACs or SACs to obtain favorable reviews.

Author responses:   Authors will have one week to view and respond to initial reviews. Author responses may not contain any identifying information that may violate the double-blind reviewing policy. Authors may not submit revisions of their paper or supplemental material, but may post their responses as a discussion in OpenReview. This is to reduce the burden on authors to have to revise their paper in a rush during the short rebuttal period.

After the initial response period, authors will be able to respond to any further reviewer/AC questions and comments by posting on the submission’s forum page. The program chairs reserve the right to solicit additional reviews after the initial author response period.  These reviews will become visible to the authors as they are added to OpenReview, and authors will have a chance to respond to them.

After the notification deadline, accepted and opted-in rejected papers will be made public and open for non-anonymous public commenting. Their anonymous reviews, meta-reviews, author responses and reviewer responses will also be made public. Authors of rejected papers will have two weeks after the notification deadline to opt in to make their deanonymized rejected papers public in OpenReview.  These papers are not counted as NeurIPS publications and will be shown as rejected in OpenReview.

Publication of accepted submissions:   Reviews, meta-reviews, and any discussion with the authors will be made public for accepted papers (but reviewer, area chair, and senior area chair identities will remain anonymous). Camera-ready papers will be due in advance of the conference. All camera-ready papers must include a funding disclosure . We strongly encourage accompanying code and data to be submitted with accepted papers when appropriate, as per the code submission policy . Authors will be allowed to make minor changes for a short period of time after the conference.

Contemporaneous Work: For the purpose of the reviewing process, papers that appeared online within two months of a submission will generally be considered "contemporaneous" in the sense that the submission will not be rejected on the basis of the comparison to contemporaneous work. Authors are still expected to cite and discuss contemporaneous work and perform empirical comparisons to the degree feasible. Any paper that influenced the submission is considered prior work and must be cited and discussed as such. Submissions that are very similar to contemporaneous work will undergo additional scrutiny to prevent cases of plagiarism and missing credit to prior work.

Plagiarism is prohibited by the NeurIPS Code of Conduct .

Other Tracks: Similarly to earlier years, we will host multiple tracks, such as datasets, competitions, tutorials as well as workshops, in addition to the main track for which this call for papers is intended. See the conference homepage for updates and calls for participation in these tracks.

Experiments: As in past years, the program chairs will be measuring the quality and effectiveness of the review process via randomized controlled experiments. All experiments are independently reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Financial Aid: Each paper may designate up to one (1) NeurIPS.cc account email address of a corresponding student author who confirms that they would need the support to attend the conference, and agrees to volunteer if they get selected. To be considered for Financial the student will also need to fill out the Financial Aid application when it becomes available.

UFC 302 results, full fight card highlights: Islam Makhachev submits Dustin Poirier

It was fight night in New Jersey.

UFC brought its latest pay-per-view to the Prudential Center with UFC 302, with 12 bouts taking place Saturday night. The main event was the UFC lightweight championship contest between champion Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier. It did not disappoint.

The co-main event was a middleweight bout between the controversial Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa.

UFC 302 started what is expected to be a thrilling month for the promotion, which includes the return of Conor McGregor June 29 vs. Michael Chandler.

Here's everything that went down at UFC 302:

UFC 302 results: Islam Makhachev submits Dustin Poirier in final round to retain title

Islam Makhachev was far from the most popular fighter to enter the ring Saturday night, but he proved he’s still the best. The UFC’s top pound-for-pound fighter retained his lightweight title with a submission victory against Dustin Poirier.

It was hardly easy. It took five rounds, but Makhachev finally was able to lock Poirier into a D'Arce choke and got "The Diamond" to tap.

Makhachev secured a takedown in the first minute of the fight and there things stayed for the remainder of the first round. The fans in New Jersey, who chanted “USA” multiple times during the match in support of the American Poirier against his Russian foe, grew restless but Makhachev was undeterred – he spent the rest of the round either on top or underneath Poirier attempting to lock in different chokes and holds.

Round two nearly went to the ground in the first 15 seconds but Poirier was able to escape and thwarted a second takedown attempt. The fight stayed on the feet until the closing seconds, when Makhachev finally got Poirier on the ground.

Makhachev landed multiple early knees in the third round – which may have done some damage to Poirier’s nose – before forcing a takedown. But Poirier managed to get back up with a little more than two minutes to go.

By the fourth round Poirier’s nose was leaking pretty consistently but a huge cut was opened up on Makhachev’s face, too, turning the affair into a bloody mess.

It seemed like it might be anyone's fight in the fifth before Makhachev made his winning moves to earn the stoppage at 2:42 of the fifth and final round.

Makhachev expressed his desire to fight for a second belt, moving up to welterweight, during his in-ring interview.

Poirier told the crowd he was uncertain about his future but said this very well could have been his final fight.

UFC 302 results: Sean Strickland earns split-decision victory

A relentless Sean Strickland defeated Paulo Costa by split decision in the co-main event of UFC 302.

Strickland, back in action for the first time since he lost the middleweight championship to Dricus Du Plessis in January, spent the early rounds of the fight in an inexorable march forward. Costa, constantly in retreat, hit the canvas briefly a few times but otherwise the fighters remained on their feet.

That remained (pretty much) true throughout, but Costa finally started to hold his ground in the fourth. But by then it was probably too late – and Strickland finished the fifth and final round with a flourish that briefly landed Costa on the canvas again.

After the scorecards were read – 49-46 Costa, 50-45 Strickland, 49-46 Strickland  – Strickland exited the cage to greet and take a photo with former President Donald Trump, who was sitting cageside.

Strickland said it was a “boring fight” and he apologized to the crowd in his in-ring interview. He also gave a shoutout to Trump and said it’s a "travesty what they’re doing to you.” (Trump was convicted this week on 34 counts of falsifying business records .)

UFC 302 results: Kevin Holland scores TKO win with nasty armbar

The bout between Kevin Holland and Michal Oleksiejczuk was a short one, but eventful.

Oleksiejczuk rocked Holland, sending him to the mat. But Holland expertly maneuvered out of danger and got Oleksiejczuk into a nasty armbar. It looked painful — frankly, it was gross. Analysts Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier were adamant that Oleksiejczuk's arm either broke or he dislocated something; referee Herb Dean called the fight shortly after. Oleksiejczuk immediately protested the decision while Holland ran out of the cage to greet former President Donald Trump, who was sitting cageside.

UFC 302 results: Niko Price outlasts Alex Morono in rematch

Niko Price has won another fight against Alex Morono. But unlike Price’s first win at UFC Fight Night 104 in 2017, where Price knocked out Morono (in what was later ruled a no contest due to Price's positive marijuana test), Saturday’s fight between the two went the distance.

Morono came out strong and landed several punches, but Morono appeared to be completely gassed, allowing Price to take control for an unanimous win (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

'Jersey Shore' stars in attendance at UFC 302

We have a situation on our hands. An event in New Jersey wouldn’t be complete without members from MTV’s “Jersey Shore” on hand. Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and Vinny Guadagnino are in the building for UFC 302 and earned a loud applause from the crowd.

UFC 302 results: Randy Brown survives, defeats Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos

Randy Brown appeared seconds away from submitting, but he pulled off a stunning turnaround to defeat Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) in their welterweight bout.

Dos Santos appeared to be poked in the eye, but the referee didn’t stop the match for dos Santos to recover. Brown caught dos Santos in the head with a knee to end the first round. Dos Santos came out swinging in the second round and took down Brown. Dos Santos ended up on Brown’s back and nearly secured a submission but Brown escaped, completed a stunning reverse and nearly submitted dos Santos himself.

Both came out swinging in the third round, but Brown was called for another poke. Brown caught dos Santos with a knee again, followed up by a couple of landed jabs to secure his win.

Donald Trump arrives at UFC 302

Former President Donald Trump is indeed in the building for UFC 302. Trump, who was convicted this week on 34 counts of falsifying business records , received quite an ovation from the crowd at New Jersey’s Prudential Center.

Trump walked out with UFC President Dana White and was shown on the broadcast shaking hands with comedian Theo Von and greeting broadcasters Jon Anik, Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier before making his way to his seat.

One person the former president didn't appear to greet? Aaron Rodgers.

The broadcast showed the four-time NFL MVP — who for a time anyway appeared like a potential Trump political rival — remained seated as Trump walked past.

Trump has attended a number of UFC events over the years.

UFC 302 results: Roman Kopylov downs Cesar Almeida

Roman Kopylov outlasted Cesar Almeida for a split decision win (29-28, 28-29, 30-27) in their middleweight bout.

Kopylov caught Almeida with a massive left hook early in the first round and knocked Almeida down with another left. Kopylov appeared to take down Almeida at will. Almeida landed some punches in the second round, but Kopylov controlled much of the third on the ground. At one point, the crowd started chanted “Stand Them Up” and referee Herb Dean eventually complied. Kopylov instantly went for another takedown and succeeded, despite the crowd’s boos.

UFC 302 results: Jailton Almeida gets Alexander Romanov to tap

We have the first submission of the night! Jailton Almeida ended his fight with Alexander Romanov early in the first round with a rear-naked choke for a first-round submission.

Almeida had no problem taking down Romanov early in the first round, despite their difference in weight. Almeida worked his way onto Romanov’s back and easily submitted him.

“I said I’m going to finish the fight. I knew I got knocked out the last fight, but I came here to finish the fight,” Almeida said via translator.

Almeida celebrated by busting a dance move in the center of the ring.

Aaron Rodgers in the building for UFC 302

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in the house for UFC 302, which is being staged not too far from the team’s New Jersey facility.

But the four-time MVP – whose Jets tenure so far has amounted to four plays but lots of headlines – is not expected to be the most famous person in the building.

Former President Donald Trump said on his Truth Social account that he’d be in attendance at the Prudential Center Saturday night, capping what has been an, uh, eventful week for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

UFC 302 results: Grant Dawson takes down Joe Solecki

Grant Dawson defeated Joe Solecki via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) in their lightweight bout.

Dawson came out of the gate quickly and instantly went for a flying knee, but Solecki caught Dawson’s leg, gradually took him down and nearly corralled him into a guillotine. Dawson was able to escape and gain control on the ground, which he maintained throughout the match. Solecki caught Dawson with an elbow that created a gash above Dawson's right eye, but wasn’t able to threaten Dawson much otherwise.

UFC 302 results: Jake Matthews outlasts Philip Rowe

Matthews earned his 13th UFC win with a unanimous decision over Philip Rowe (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) in their welterweight bout.

Rowe has an 80.5-inch reach, the second-longest reach among active UFC welterweights, and he used his 7.5-inch wingspan advantage to his favor. Rowe landed a right hand to Matthews' face and busted his nose open midway through the first round. Despite bleeding profusely, Matthews stunned Rowe with a couple shots in the second round and controlled Rowe on the ground to pick up the win.

UFC 302 results: Bassil Hafez def. Mickey Gall

Bassil Hafez defeated Mickey Gall via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) in a hard-hitting contest. Both Hafez and Gall traded blows throughout the entire fight, but Hafez had the upper hand.

After his victory, Hafez delivered a message.

"There's something I want to say, it's been heavy on my heart for a long time: I don't support genocide," Hafez told the crowd. "I don't support innocent women and children being killed for war, or for money and power. We are all God's children, and we all deserve a fair chance in life. Free Palestine."

UFC 302 results: Ailin Perez wins grudge match against Joselyne Edwards

Ailin Perez defeated Joselyne Edwards by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) in their women's bantamweight fight. Perez celebrated with her "signature twerk."

An official timeout was called in the second round after Edwards was called for a headbutt, although she did not get a point penalty. Perez responded with a spinning fist after the restart that hit Edwards in the face and knocked her down. Perez controlled the fight and had several takedowns of Edwards.

There’s no love lost between Perez and Edwards. A war of words came to blows when they got into a fight ahead of UFC Fight Night 232 in Las Vegas in November, where Perez was scheduled to fight Lucie Pudilova days later. The UFC didn’t discipline Perez and Edwards for the fight outside the ring and instead set up Saturday's match.

At the start of the fight, Perez reached out her hand to tap gloves with Edwards, who did not return the gesture. But the two hugged it out afterwards, appearing to quash their beef.

UFC 302 results: Andre Lima def. Mitch Raposo

Andre Lima will remain undefeated.

Lima came out of the gate strong and delivered power kick after power kick to Raposo’s body. Lima landed 23 leg kicks and 13 significant head strikes on Raposo across three rounds. Raposo, on the other hand, had 30 significant head strikes on Lima, but it was not enough to win the flyweight bout. Lima was deemed the winner by split decision, which came as a surprise to broadcasters Jon Anik, Daniel Cormier and Joe Rogan, who all felt Lima should have swept the cards handily.

Sports columnists | renck: after 52 years, cherry creek coach marc johnson exits, leaving legacy of championships, relationships and love: “i have loved every second”, marc johnson celebrated his ninth state title in disbelief: ‘i have no idea why everything aligned the way it did.’.

That is how Marc Johnson ended his coaching career after 52 years at Cherry Creek High School. On a postcard-perfect Saturday at All-Star Park, the Bruins swept a doubleheader from Regis Jesuit, claiming Johnson’s ninth state championship.

As right-hander Ryan Falke delivered the final strike on a high fastball, delirium ensued. Three assistant coaches hugged Johnson in the dugout. His wife, Peg, soon joined the embrace.

“We didn’t talk about this happening,” Peg explained, her voice cracking. “But yeah I dreamed about it.”

Johnson, 79, took the pressure off his players by focusing on the process, not the result. Success is measured in effort, in reaching potential. Despite needing to win three straight elimination games, the Bruins looked calmer than a lagoon. When they broke open a scoreless game in the fifth, the made-for-Disney script began to write itself.

“It’s been an awesome run. I have loved every second I have coached, every kid I have coached. How would I ever explain how it all fell into place? It wasn’t because of me,” Johnson said. “It was because of these guys, these players. It’s because of my coaches. I tried my best not to think about this. But I would be lying if I said I didn’t.”

Johnson’s farewell party doubled as a celebration of Cherry Creek baseball under his watch. Former players across five decades attended Saturday’s games, including a few who boarded flights to make the first pitch.

This is Johnson’s legacy as much as the league titles, the big leaguers produced, and the more than 450 athletes he has sent off to college programs. He believes in relationships, knowing that when kids stop playing they will remember their friendships long after their statistics have faded from memory.

“Everywhere you go, people know him. I was driving with coach to Arizona, and we found a wallet in a restaurant in Raton, New Mexico. We saw a police officer and went over to give it to him. We roll down the window, and he looks in and says, ‘Aren’t you coach Johnson?’” said Cherry Creek pitching coach Dave Veres, a former Rockies closer. “It’s unbelievable. His impact goes beyond Colorado. It extends across the country of guys he has coached or coached against.”

Johnson outlasted administrations, criticism and a pandemic. The Bruins began this season knowing it would be his last. They started 3-2-1 in their first six games. A few weeks later, they launched a 16-game winning streak.

When you believe in destiny, you don’t believe halfway.

“It means a lot to celebrate Coach J.’s legendary career this way,” Falke said. “He’s the GOAT.”

Johnson also is a throwback. In Saturday’s finale, he drew in his infield in the first inning to cut the run. A groundball to second baseman Brayden Yasuzawa was followed by a perfect throw to erase the runner at the plate. Moments later, he called a sac bunt and a squeeze bunt in succession. Mason Scott raced from third and appeared to beat the throw, but was called out.

Johnson’s last game nearly ended in the second inning. As he hustled from the dugout, he pointed his finger at the home plate umpire, screaming his displeasure with the call.

“The one thing that will never leave me is the passion and love for the game,” Johnson said. “God put me here for a reason.”

Peg tends to agree. Johnson had plenty of opportunities to exit preps for college ball or a scouting role. But why leave? They bleed Cherry Creek.

“This is us,” she said. “I have always told him, ‘You have no idea how lucky you are because your avocation is your vocation.’ Nobody gets to do that.”

Johnson always wanted to be in the dugout. He has a little bit of Columbo in him as a coach. There is always just one more thing. One more wrinkle to iron out. One more story to tell.

He enjoys the monotony, the unpredictability, the mowing. Yes, he is one heck of a groundskeeper. It is hard to find someone who hasn’t seen Johnson cutting the grass or dragging the field at Cherry Creek.

“I have got guys trying to get me to coach with them, and I told them they had to have a turf field,” Johnson said with a grin.

This is the part that goes unseen when watching him control a game from the top step of the dugout with his right arm perched on the railing. He has a charming personality and rare humility given his resume. Between games Saturday, he posed for pictures, including with John Casillan, a part-time coach for the Catholic church.

“He believes I bring him good luck,” Casillan said.

Everyone has a story about Coach J.

Brad Lidge, a World Series champion with the Phillies, remembers attending camps at Cherry Creek beginning in seventh grade. At one session, Johnson broke out a new hitting contraption attached to a stationary ball. Johnson was glowing as a star player delivered perfect cuts. Up stepped Lidge.

“On my first swing, I completely missed the ball and hit the wires, snapping them and breaking the machine,” Lidge said. “J looks at me and the machine — everyone in the gym has stopped and is watching — and he says, ‘You can’t break those wires without some serious bat speed.’ I have never felt so relieved. He just has a way of making us all feel good.”

So it was Saturday. Players hugged, smiled and laughed. At one point, Johnson approached a gaggle of them and said, “Remember, I told you the meaning of family. Forget About Me, I Love You,” Johnson said.

For 52 years, Johnson has been gripping a baseball. Turns out, it was the other way around.
