The Case Study Of Vanitas Part 2 - What We Know So Far

On Aug. 6, the English-dubbed version of "The Case Study of Vanitas" arrived at Funimation's website , bringing the steampunk-styled supernatural mystery manga series to life for a whole new audience. The vampire -based anime, set in Paris of the 19th century, is very atmospheric, what with its airships, period clothing and blue-moon and crimson vampires. It starts with the young vampire Noé, who is asked by his teacher to go to Paris to look for the titular book. In an incident on the airship, he meets a girl named Amelia — who turns out to be a vampire named Florifel, who just needs her name returned to her — and blue-eyed Vanitas himself. Vanitas enlists his help in changing the "curse-bearing" vampires back to normal using the grimoire in question. 

"The Case Study of Vanitas" has aired 12 episodes of its split-cour season, which is normal for anime shows — but now leaves fans to wonder when Part 2 will happen, and what will happen going forward, since the series hasn't exactly concluded its plot. If you're one of the fans anxiously awaiting news of the second part of the first season, here's what we know so far.

When is the release date for The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

The @vanitas_anime Twitter account announced on Sept. 17 that the second cour (or quarter of a year) of "The Case Study of Vanitas" is coming in January 2022. This is good news, as it means fans won't have too long to wait:  Anime News and Facts is reporting that the 12 episodes in the second part of the split-cour series will air between Jan. 8 and March 26, 2022. It should be noted that these dates refer to the Japanese release, not the English one. 

However, English-speaking fans shouldn't experience too much of a delay. The initial Japanese run premiered on various channels starting July 2 ( via Anime News Network ), which means it was subtitled with the first episode dubbed by the time it released on Funimation a little over a month later. Comingsoon.com said that Funimation had released five dubbed episodes by September 17 (a paid subscription is required to access the dubbed versions of newer episodes). 

Hopefully, that means U.S. fans will be streaming at least a subtitled second part of Season 1 by springtime.

Who are the characters in The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

The main characters of the series include Noé Archiviste, played in the Japanese by Kaito Ishikawa, and Vanitas (not the original of the book), played by Natsuki Hanae. Supporting characters include Jeanne (Inori Minase), a vampire girl also called the "Hellfire Witch"; Luca (Shino Shimoji), a polite vampire boy ranking just below the queen, who is trying to save his brother; Dominique (Ai Kayano), the aristocratic daughter of the alien lord the Marquis de Sade; Veronica (Yoko Hikasa), Dominique's sister who hates humans; Ruthven (Toshiyuki Morikawa), Luca's uncle and the hero who brokered peace between humans and vampires. 

Others include Dante (Taro Kuichi), Johann (Koji Yusa), and Richie (Riho Kuma), Vanitas' information brokers, and Noé's unnamed teacher (Akira Ishida), the one who sent him to find the book. Vampire Naenia (Kaori Nazuka), vampire hunter Laurent (Kengo Kawanishi), Holy Knight Olivier (Tomoaki Maeno) and Noé's first friend Louis de Sade (Miyuri Shimabukuru) also appear. There's also the cat, Murr (Miyu Komaki). Not all have survived Season 1, though, so they won't necessarily appear in Part 2.

The English dub cast of the series includes Stephen Fu as Noe, Zeo Robinson as Vanitas, Marianne Bray as Murr, Ian Sinclair as Dante, and Hayden Daviau as Amelia. 

What is the plot of The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

As the first part of the first season ended, the Beast of Gévaudan has resurfaced, so Noé and Vanitas go to investigate sightings of it. The beast will likely figure largely in the events of the second part of the season, as will Vanitas' relationship with Noé. Viewers may also finally learn the intentions of the secret organization Charlatan because of the big reveal in the end-credits scene. As viewers know, Ruthven figures largely in the plotting that's been going on, and he has hypnotized Noé with Jeanne's unwitting help, which could all blow up in Part 2. Meanwhile, Roland is going through a crisis of faith because he has learned that not all vampires are bad, and the show will no doubt explore the ramifications of that.

"The Case Study of Vanitas" will feature 12 episodes in Season 1 Part 2, making up a total of 24 episodes in the first season. The anime has been rapidly catching up to the manga:  Monsters and Critics predicts that by the 24th episode, the anime will be up to Chapter 43 of the manga. The manga is expected to publish Chapter 61, which means season 2 might be a more difficult sell than the first.

The Case Study of Vanitas (ヴァニタスの手記, Vanitasu no Karute ) is a manga series by Jun Mochizuki. It was later serialized into a TV anime series directed by Tomoyuki Itamura.

It’s 19th-century Paris, and young vampire Noé hunts for the Book of Vanitas. Attacked by a vampire driven insane, a human intercedes, rescues Noé, and heals the sick creature. Commanding the book and calling himself Vanitas, this doctor tempts Noé with a mad crusade to “cure” the entire vampire race. Allying with one who wields arcane power so easily may be dangerous, but does he have a choice?

Funimation Announces English Dub Premiere For The Case Study of Vanitas

Funimation has announced an August 6th start date for the English dubbed adaptation of The Case Study of Vanitas.  The BONES produced series is being directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, with scripts overseen by Deko Akao and character designs by Yoshiyuki Ito. Yuki Kajiura is composing the series’ music. The English dub cast and crew is as follows:

Short of getting Roiland back, which I'm sure isn't going to happen, I don't even think they could get much better than the new voices from the previous season. And the ratings for season 7 weren't much lower on average than for season 6; it was pretty much just a normal season-to-season drop that most likely would have happened regardless.

I mean, look at the actual averages:

Season 1 - 1.57 million viewers Season 2 - 1.97 million viewers Season 3 - 2.33 million viewers Season 4 - 1.52 million viewers Season 5 - 0.96 million viewers Season 6 - 0.56 million viewers Season 7 - 0.42 million viewers

Ever since season 3, it had been having steep drops even with Roiland still involved; the season 6 to 7 drop is actually the smallest-percentage drop it's had since it started dropping, and if anything it's possible that changing the voice actors actually *boosted* interest a bit and prevented it from dropping even more.

There wrong to tell Disney that they shouldn't put a streaming bundle with MAX claiming, that it is like putting The Playboy Mansion Inside Disneyland which they can be sued for slander, smearing, & defaming, and also being over the top and it being 100% false. You support that claim Little Al when you know full well that is 100% false which you don't seem to get. I extremely highly doubt they would sue over this; a win on their part would effectively establish that memes aren't fair use, and that would get them an insane level of backlash.

Funimation picks up steampunk vampires with The Case Study of Vanitas

The Case Study of Vanitas has released a second trailer with clips of a steampunk world, vampires on the attack and with “Sora to Sora”, the opening theme song as backing.

The anime starts in Japan on the 4th of July and will join Funimation once the Sony-owned platform launches their summer collection.

We’re expecting two halves for series with one, and we don’t yet have a date for the second half, which suggests there might be a whole quarter year, or more, between the two.

In the show, The Book of Vanitas is a clockwork grimoire with an unsettling reputation. It’s being is being sought by rival vampires.

One of the searchers, Noe wants it to save a friend, but in Paris encounters someone claiming to be a vampire doctor instead.

The manga is available already at comiXology in English, published by Yen Press. They describe it;

Step once more into the imagination of Jun Mochizuki, creator of New York Times-bestselling PandoraHearts! A tale of vampires and curses set in a whimsical and dark steampunk Paris unfolds! On the streets, rumors abound of a clockwork grimoire said to sow curses among the vampires. Strongest Characters in The Case Study of Vanitas: Vanitas, Noe, & More

The Case Study of Vanitas is a story based in a fictional 19th-century Paris where humans and vampires share the city. The story revolves around Vanitas and his companion, Noe Archiviste. They are on a quest to heal cursed vampires through the Book of Vanitas. It goes into detail about the Vampire born under the Blue Moon. He was isolated because of their fear, and thus, he swore vengeance against the vampires born under the Red Moon. His name was none other than Vanitas. The narrative is a memoir from the eyes of Noe Archiviste. He delves into how he came to meet Vanitas, their journey together, and how it eventually ends.  

While he derives his name from an old vampire and uses his grimoire The Book of Vanitas. One wouldn’t be harshly criticized if they had mistaken Vanitas for a vampire. And that speaks for Vanitas himself, who is a human first and foremost. While he isn’t physically weak, he compensates for his lack of strength with his intelligence and grimoire. A combination of these two allows him to manipulate the actual names of vampires, making him a formidable presence within the series.

Noe Archiviste 

The sole survivor of the Archiviste clan, Noe is the narrator of the series and accompanies Vanitas on his journey of curing Vampires. While one may argue that Noe has been defeated several times within the series. It might be accurate, but his compassion and kindness prevent him from having a severe physical altercation.

Despite being a vampire himself, Noe treats vampires and humans as equally good creatures. It’s this good virtue that pulls him down from time to time. But make no mistake, with his ability to relive memories just by drinking the respective person’s blood. It is safe to say one wouldn’t want to get on his wrong side.

Lucius Oriflamme

He is one of the most powerful and influential characters in The Case Study of Vanitas. Despite his young age, he serves as the Grand Duke to the Vampire Queen herself. He’s an aristocrat through and through.

Despite his childlike demeanor, he’s quite skilled at manipulating others with his strategic ploys and engagement in political scenarios to further his motive and maintain his clan’s position of power. To top it off, he holds Jeanne as his Chevalier.

Prolific, Revered, and the guardian of Lucius Oriflamme, Ruthven is often considered one of the most essential characters in The Case Study of Vanitas. Playing a pivotal role in ending the war between humans and vampires, he now finds himself as a member of the Senate and is well-known amongst humans as well.

He sought peace between humans and vampires during the war, even acting as a peacemaker. Having been betrayed by his students, he no longer shares the same passion and is ready to use any means to seek his desires. Cold, ruthless, and feared by vampire society, with his powers yet to be showcased, he’s just a testament to the man that is Ruthven.

Jean-Jacques Chastel

Chastel is the protector and longtime companion of Chloe d’Apchier and the last surviving member of the d’Apchiers. His loyalty knows no bounds, as he goes on to sign a contract with the devil itself just to realize Chloe’s wish. He turns himself into the very beast the village feared in exchange for his actual name. He wreaks havoc on anyone who tries to hurt Chloe, a symbol of his genuine and sincere feelings towards her.

Despite holding a degree in Chemistry Majors, Archak found himself as a Journalist. His love for anime and choccy milk is unmatched! When not writing, Archak can be found indulging with motorcycles. After all, four wheels move the body but two wheels move the soul!

News The Case Study of Vanitas Manga Takes 2-Month Break

The manga went on hiatus in June 2022, and resumed in May 2023.

Yen Press has been publishing the manga simultaneously in English since its debut, and it describes the first volume:

Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend's salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him...in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?

Mochizuki ( Pandora Hearts , Crimson-Shell ) launched the manga in Gangan Joker in December 2015. Square Enix published the 11th volume on April 22.

BONES ' television anime of the manga premiered in July 2021. The anime's second part premiered in January 2022. Funimation streamed the first part, and it also streamed an English dub. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the second part as it aired, and Crunchyroll also added the first part.

The Case Study of Vanitas is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. It has been serialized in Square Enix's shōnen manga magazine Monthly Gangan Joker since December 2015. In North America, the manga is published in English by Yen Press.

Recently it was announced that the manga will be on a 2-month break. Previously, the manga went on hiatus in June 2022 and resumed in May 2023.

On Friday, 17 May, Square Enix announced that Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas manga will not appear in the June issue of Square Enix's Gangan Joker magazine on May 22, nor will it appear in the July issue on June 21.

Yen Press announced in December 2015 that it would publish new chapters concurrently with Japan. The manga is licensed in Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Poland. BONES' television anime of the manga premiered in July 2021. The anime's second part premiered in January 2022. Funimation streamed the first part, and it also streamed an English dub. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the second part as it aired, and Crunchyroll also added the first part.

The story of The Case Study of Vanitas revolves around an airship ride to Paris, where the vampire Noé Archiviste meets Vanitas, a human claiming to be a vampire doctor curing them of the malnomen, which causes vampires to behave predatorily against their will.

The book with which he heals, The Book of Vanitas, is connected to the original Vanitas, the Vampire of the Blue Moon, hated by the Vampires of the Red Moon who form the traditional vampire society. Noé and Vanitas join forces to heal vampires, but there lurks a threat of some unknown force named Charlatan, which may be responsible for corrupting the sick vampires.

Yen Press describes the first volume;

"Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend's salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him...in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?"

In nineteenth-century France, humans and vampires coexist.

The young vampire Noé is traveling to Paris in search of The Book of Vanitas, which is said to be capable of unleashing a curse upon all vampires.

Crunchyroll describes the anime as;

"On an airship, he finds himself embroiled in a strange incident. It is Vanitas, a human calling himself a vampire expert, who appears before Noé in the ensuing chaos. In Vanitas’s hands is the very book that Noé has been searching for: The Book of Vanitas…

Following this encounter, the curtain is set to rise on this tale of vampires, curses, and salvation…"
