Spy Movie Review:  Nikhil Siddharth, Iswarya Menon, and Rana Daggubati starrer Spy, helmed by Garry BH has hit the theaters today on 29th June. Let’s see the story of Spy.

Story:  Jai (Nikhil) is an undercover agent who tries to find out who killed his brother Agent Subhash (Aryan Rajesh). In this sequence, Vijay has a mission to stop global terrorist Qadir Khan from committing genocide and hand him over to the Indian government. His elder brother Subhash also participated in this mission and died. Who killed Subhash?, Also what is the missing important file related to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose? How does Jai complete this task successfully? To get these answers, one should watch the movie Spy on silver screen.

 Performance:  Unlike his previous movies, Nikhil Siddharth has come up with this action mind game drama as a spy in the backdrop of terrorism. Nikhil Siddharth’s effort to show freshness in his looks and action in this movie is good.  His performance as Raw Agent is the highlight of the movie. Aishwarya Menon looks beautiful on the screen. The love scenes with Aishwarya Menon and the chemistry between them in some scenes is impressive. Some of the punches between Nikhil  Siddharth and Abhinav Gomathank are also laughable at some places.  Jishu Sen Gupta who plays the villain is ok. Sanya Thakur, Abhinav Gomatham and the rest of the cast have done well in their role. Rana Daggubati did a cameo, in which he got to smolder at the camera a lot. 

 Technical:   The story of Spy is simple. The director Garry BH mixed historical elements with terrorist elements and made this movie. The action sequences are good.  The logics are missed at many places in the movie. And when it comes to the music, the songs are not good, the background music is good. The cinematographer’s work is the main strength of Spy. Every frame is shot very effectively. The production values of the movie are also good.

Analysis:  Overall Spy is a generic spy action thriller drama, Nikhil Siddharth’ performance is one of the major highlights of Spy. Simple story, routine screenplay, logic missing in many places in key scenes, slow narration in some scenes are the minus points of the movie.

After scoring Pan India blockbuster with Karthikeya 2, Nikhil Siddharth is back with a Spy thriller. For the first-time in his career, he donned the role of Spy. The teaser and trailer raises curiosity for its underlying point of India’s patriot Subhash Chandra Bose. The film is largely promoted with the tagline of “India’s Best Kept Secret”. After being plagued by the issues of delay, finally, SPY has hit the screens today. Some of the premieres in the US were cancelled owing to the delay in delivering the content. Will Nikhil continue his success streak? Here is our review of Spy.

Jai (Nikhil Siddhartha) and his close-friend Kamal (Abhinav Gomatam) take up the mission to find the most-wanted terrorist Khadir Khan and thus abort a nuclear attack on India. Jai Vardhan has a personal loss. He wants to dig out who killed his brother Subhash (Aryan Rajesh). How the missing files of Netaji Subhash Chandrabose have connection to the main plot forms the crux of the story.

Performances:

Nikhil slips into the shoes of a RAW agent effortlessly. He has moulded himself and appeared fit for the role. He shines in the action scenes. Abhinav Gomatam is a nice addition. He brings laughs with his witty one-liners and he has got a through-out character as the hero’s loyal friend. Iswarya Menon is alright. Rana’s guest appearance leaves an impact. He praises Netaji’s role and it works out well in the movie. Makarand Deshpande, Nitin Mehta, Sanya Thakur, Ravi Varma have confined themselves to their characters and delivered what is needed. Aryan Rajesh has a limited presence. Jissu Sengupta as the main villain is adequate. But he enters so late into the story. It is not engaging. Posani’s role gets wasted. Several characters in the film have not evolved completely.

Technicalities

The idea of Spy looks great on paper. But it falters in its execution. Editor-turned-director Garry failed as the film lacked high moments. The technical aspects are not upto the mark, especially towards the climax portions. Poor VFX work brings down the film. Music composer Sri Charan Pakala is the saviour who elevates the scenes with background score. Editing is crisp.

Unengaging Story & Direction Predictable Twists Weak Villain & Lack of Highs

Nikhil Siddhartha is known for picking up stories with substance. His script-sense is revered widely. Spy movies have a great fan base. When Nikhil is coming up with a Spy film set against the backdrop of the death mystery of Subash Chandrabose, a lot was expected. But sadly, the film fails to live up to its hype expectations. Certainly, Spy was not expected from Nikhil Siddhartha who rose to national stardom on his own.

Spy has so much stuff. But it is presented in a very confusing manner. Protagonist Nikhil’s characterisation lacks the punch. Though he delivered what was expected of him. Director Garry failed miserably in keeping the audiences on toes. The twists in the film are very much predictable. The main villain enters the scene very late and the villains are weak in this spy thriller. The high moments are missing. Story has many layers, but it is completely formulaic that Telugu audiences are very familiar with. Narration is bland.

It is not completely bad. There are some good moments here and there. The hidden files of Subhash Chandra Bose and Kohima battle are intriguing to an extent. It could be better though. Music composer Sri Charan Pakala rescues the Spy largely. Nikhil and Sri Charan together save the film to an extent. But this Spy misses the track way beyond which can’t be revived. The climax episode lacks the impact. The gunshots and blast scenes look unnatural. The makers took many cinematic liberties too. Overall, Spy is underwhelming.

Verdict: Bland Spy

வரலாற்று உண்மைகளைக் கேள்விக்குள்ளாக்கும் தகவல்களும் செய்திகளும் மக்களை எளிதாக ஈர்க்கும். திரைப்படங்களில் அவை இடம்பெறும்போது பெரியளவிலான கவனிப்பைப் பெறும்.

இந்தியா விடுதலை பெற்றபிறகும் சுபாஷ் சந்திரபோஸ் உயிரோடிருந்தாரா என்ற கேள்விக்குப் பலவாறாகச் சொல்லப்படும் பதில்களும் அந்த வகையறாவில் சேரும். அப்போதைய இந்திய அரசுக்கும் அந்த உண்மைகள் தெரியும் என்பது அவற்றிலொன்று. அத்தகைய நேதாஜி தொடர்பான ஒரு ரகசியக் கோப்பு களவாடப்பட்டதா என்ற கேள்வியைத் தாங்கியிருந்தது ‘ஸ்பை’ தெலுங்குப் படத்தின் ட்ரெய்லர். அதன் மீது மாபெரும் எதிர்பார்ப்பு குவியவும் காரணமானது. படம் பார்த்து முடிந்தபிறகு, அந்த எதிர்பார்ப்பு என்னவானது?

வழக்கமான ’ஸ்பை’ படம்! உளவாளிகளை நாயகர்களாகவும் கதாபாத்திரங்களாகவும் கொண்ட படங்கள் பல வகைமைகளில் உருப்பெறும். ஆக்‌ஷன், ட்ராமா, அட்வெஞ்சர், த்ரில்லர், பேண்டஸி என்று வெவ்வேறு வடிவங்களைத் தாங்கும். அப்படியொரு சாத்தியம் இருந்தும் ஜேம்ஸ் பாண்ட், மிஷன் இம்பாஸிபிள் படங்களின் தாக்கத்தில் ஆக்‌ஷன், அட்வெஞ்சர் எனும் எல்லைக்குள்ளேயே பெரும்பாலான ‘ஸ்பை’ படங்கள் வார்க்கப்படுகின்றன.

நிகில் சித்தார்த், ஐஸ்வர்யா மேனன், மாகரந்த் தேஷ்பாண்டே, ஜிஷு சென்குப்தா உள்ளிட்ட பலர் நடிப்பில், படத்தொகுப்பாளர் கேரி பிஹெச் முதன்முறையாக இயக்கியுள்ள ‘ஸ்பை’ திரைப்படமும் அந்த வரிசையில் இடம்பிடிப்பது வருத்தத்திற்குரிய விஷயம்.

இந்திய உளவுப் பிரிவான ‘ரா’வைச் சேர்ந்தவர் சுபாஷ் (ஆர்யன் ராஜேஷ்). பாகிஸ்தானைச் சேர்ந்த பயங்கரவாதி காதிர் என்பவரைக் கொல்லச் செல்லும்போது அவர் மரணத்தைத் தழுவுகிறார். ஆனால், நடந்தது என்னவென்ற விவரம் ரா அதிகாரிகளுக்குக் கிடைப்பதில்லை.

காதிர் இறந்த தகவல் மட்டுமே உறுதிப்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. ஆனால், ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து மீண்டும் தனது பயங்கரவாத இயக்கத்தை காதிர் நடத்தி வருவதாகத் தெரிய வருகிறது. ஜோர்டானில் அவர் உயிரோடு திரிவதும் கண்டறியப்படுகிறது. அதையடுத்து, காதிர் குறித்த உண்மைகளை அறிவதற்காக ஜெய் (நிகில் சித்தார்த்) தலைமையிலான ரா அதிகாரிகள் குழு ஜோர்டானுக்குச் செல்கின்றனர்.

இறந்துபோன சுபாஷின் சகோதரர் தான் இந்த ஜெய். அண்ணனின் மரணத்திற்குப் பழி வாங்கும் வேட்கையோடு திரியும் ஜெய்க்கு, அதற்குக் காரணம் காதிர் தொடர்பான ஆபரேஷன் தான் என்பது தெரிய வருகிறது. அதேநேரத்தில், ரா தலைமையகத்தில் இருந்து சுபாஷ் சந்திரபோஸ் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட ரகசியக் கோப்பொன்று திருடு போகிறது. அதனைத் திருடியவர் ராவைச் சார்ந்தவர் என்று கண்டுபிடித்தாலும், அவரது அடையாளத்தை முழுதாக அறியமுடியாமல் திணறுகின்றனர் அதிகாரிகள்.  மியான்மர் வழியாக நேபாளத்திற்குச் சென்ற அந்த நபர், அதன்பிறகு என்னவானார் என்பது மர்மமாகவே இருக்கிறது.

இந்த நிலையில், ஜெய் குழுவினர் காதிரை மடக்கும் முயற்சிகளைத் தொடர்ந்து வருகின்றனர். அதன் பலனாக, காதிரைச் சுட்டு வீழ்த்தும் வாய்ப்பும் ஜெய்க்குக் கிடைக்கிறது. ஆனால், அவரோ காதிர் அருகிலிருக்கும் நபரைச் சுடுகிறார். அந்த நபர் தான் நேதாஜி சம்பந்தப்பட்ட ஆவணங்களைத் திருடியவர். அது மட்டுமல்ல, சுபாஷ் நடத்திய ஆபரேஷனில் அவருடன் ஒன்றாகப் பணியாற்றியவர். அந்த நபர் என்னவானார்? தனது சகோதரனுக்கு என்ன நிகழ்ந்தது என்பதை ஜெய் அறிந்தாரா? நேதாஜி சம்பந்தப்பட்ட தகவல்கள் திருடு போனதற்கும், பயங்கரவாதக் கும்பலின் தலைவனுக்கும் என்ன சம்பந்தம்? இந்தக் கேள்விகளுக்குப் பதிலளிக்கிறது ‘ஸ்பை’.

உண்மையிலேயே, லட்சம் சரவெடிகளை ஒன்றாகக் கோர்த்து தீப்பற்ற வைத்தது போன்றதொரு கதை தான். ஆனால், காட்சிகள் நகரும்விதமோ நம்மை ஐசியூவில் தள்ளிவிடும் அளவுக்கு இருக்கிறது. அதனால், ’சொதப்பலான திரைக்கதை அமைந்தபிறகு வேறு என்னதான் செய்வது’ என்பது போல நாயகன் முதற்கொண்டு அனைவரும் தேமேவென நடித்திருக்கின்றனர்.

வழி தவறியது எங்கே? முதல் காட்சியிலேயே திரைக்கதை தடம் புரண்டு விடுகிறது. நேதாஜி சம்பந்தப்பட்ட கோப்பு களவு போவதில் இருந்துதான், இந்தப் படமே தொடங்கியிருக்க வேண்டும். இதனைப் பார்க்க ஒருவர் டிக்கெட் கவுண்டரில் காத்திருப்பதற்கான முதல் காரணம் அதுவே. ஆனால், ‘ஸ்பை’ கதாசிரியர் ராஜசேகர் ரெட்டி, திரைக்கதை வசனம் எழுதிய அனிருத் கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி மற்றும் அபிஷேக் மகரிஷி மட்டுமல்லாமல் இயக்குனர் கேரியும் கூட அதனைக் கவனிக்க மறந்திருக்கிறார். நாயகன் ஜெய் தனது சகோதரரைப் பறி கொடுத்ததும், அதற்குக் காரணமானவர்களைப் பழி வாங்கத் துடிப்பதும், அப்போது எளிதாக நம் மனதைத் தொட்டிருக்கும்.

வில்லன் யார் என்று நாயகன் அறியும் காட்சி, இந்தக் கதையில் மிக முக்கியமானது. ஆனால், அது மிகச்சாதாரணமாக வந்து போகிறது. அது மட்டுமல்ல, பல முக்கியத் திருப்பங்கள் சட்டென்று நம்மைக் கடக்கின்றன. அவற்றுக்கான காரண காரியங்கள் திரைக்கதையில் எங்குமே வெளிப்படவில்லை. பிட்காய்ன் பரிமாற்றம் மூலமாக பயங்கரவாத இயக்கமொன்று நடவடிக்கைகளில் இறங்கியுள்ளதையும், எல்லைப்பகுதிகளில் நிகழும் குளறுபடிகளையும் நாயகன் ‘ஜஸ்ட் லைக் தட்’ கண்டுபிடிப்பதாக ஒரு காட்சிக்கோர்வை படத்தில் உண்டு. அதனைப் பார்த்ததும், ‘எப்புட்றா..’ என்றே அலறத் தோன்றுகிறது.

இப்படியொரு ஆக்‌ஷன் கதையில் பாடல்களுக்குத்தான் இடமிருக்காது; நாயகியையாவது கவர்ச்சிகரமாக நடமாடவிடுவோமே என்ற நப்பாசையில் ஐஸ்வர்யா மேனனுக்கென்று ஒரு பிளாஷ்பேக்கும் சில காட்சிகளும் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. கதையின் மையத்திற்கும் அந்த ட்ராக்குக்கும் எந்தச் சம்பந்தமுமில்லை. அதேநேரத்தில், ஐஸ்வர்யாவை ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் அழகுறக் காட்டியிருப்பதையும் குறிப்பிடத்தான் வேண்டும்.

நாயகன் நிகில் சித்தார்த், கடந்த ஆண்டு கார்த்திகேயா 2, 18 பேஜஸ் என்று இரண்டு சூப்பர்ஹிட் படங்களைத் தந்திருந்தார். அவரது வளர்ச்சிக்கு முட்டுக்கட்டை போடும்விதமாகவே இப்படம் அவசர அவசரமாகத் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டதோ என்ற சந்தேகம் எழுகிறது.

அந்தளவுக்கு அவரது பாத்திரம் பலவீனமாக எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. நிகில் தந்தையாக வரும் தணிகல பரணி, ரா தலைவராக வரும் மாகரந்த் தேஷ்பாண்டே, ’மாற்றான்’ வில்லன் சச்சின் கடேகர், ஜிஷு சென்குப்தா, ரவிவர்மா மற்றும் நகைச்சுவை நடிகர் அபினவ் கோமதம் உட்படப் பலர் இதில் நடித்துள்ளனர். ராணா தாகுபதி கௌரவ தோற்றத்தில் ஒரு காட்சியில் தோன்றியிருக்கிறார்.

இந்த படத்தில் வம்சி பட்சிபுலுசு உட்பட நான்கு ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் பணியாற்றியுள்ளனர். ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகளில் அதற்கான பலன் தெரிய வருகிறது. ஆனால், கதை வலுவாக இல்லாததால் அவை விழலுக்கு இறைத்த நீராகியிருக்கிறது. ஸ்ரீசரன் பகலாவின் பின்னணி இசை கூட காட்சிகளின் தாக்கத்தை ஆழமானதாக மாற்ற முடியவில்லை.

பயணத்தில் சரிவு! கிடைத்த காட்சிகளை ஒரு படத்தொகுப்பாளர் ஒன்றாகக் கோர்ப்பதற்கும், அவரே அப்படத்தின் இயக்குனராகப் பொறுப்பேற்பதற்கும் நிறைய வித்தியாசம் உண்டு. இந்த படம் அதனைச் சுக்கல்சுக்கலாக்கியுள்ளது. கேரி பிஹெச் ஒரு படத்தொகுப்பாளராகத் திறனைக் கொட்டியிருந்தாலும், ஒரு இயக்குனராகப் படத்தின் லகான் அவரிடம் இல்லை. ஜேம்ஸ் பாண்ட், ஈதன் ஹண்ட் உட்படப் பல ஹாலிவுட் ‘ஸ்பை’ பாத்திரங்கள் நினைத்த மாத்திரத்தில் பல நாடுகளுக்குப் பயணிப்பதாகக் காட்டப்படுவதுண்டு.

அதற்காக வலுவான காரணங்களும், சாத்தியங்களும் திரைக்கதையில் விளக்கப்படும். ஆனால், ‘ஸ்பை’ படத்திலோ குழந்தைகள் யோசித்து யோசித்துக் கதை சொல்வது போலக் காட்சிகள் தாறுமாறாக நகர்கின்றன.

நாயகனுக்கான அறிமுகச் சண்டைக்காட்சி இலங்கையில் நிகழ்வதாகக் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவரோடு மோதும் சட்டவிரோதக் கும்பலைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள் சுத்தத் தமிழில் பேசுகின்றனர். சுற்றிலும் சிங்கள எழுத்துகளுடன் கூடிய பலகைகள் தொங்குகின்றன. அந்தக் குழுவின் தலைவர்களோ சீனர்கள் போன்று தோற்றமளிக்கின்றனர்.

நாயகனும் அவரது நண்பரும் மட்டும் தெலுங்கில் உரையாடியவாறே சண்டையிடுகின்றனர். அதனைப் பார்த்ததும், ‘நல்லாத்தானே போய்ட்டிருந்தது’ என்று வடிவேலு பாணியில் நமது ‘மைண்ட்வாய்ஸ்’ மாறுகிறது. ஏன் இந்தச் சித்தரிப்பு என்பது படக்குழுவினருக்கே வெளிச்சம்.

நெடுநாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு ஷாருக்கான் நடிப்பில் வெளியான ‘பதான்’ கூட ‘ஸ்பை’ ஆக்‌ஷன் படமே. அதன் வசூல் ஆயிரம் கோடிகளைத் தொட்டது. அதில் கொட்டப்பட்டிருந்த பட்ஜெட்டையும் உழைப்பையும் சிரத்தையையும் ஒப்பிடுகையில், இதன் பங்கு பல மடங்கு குறைவாகத்தான் தென்படும். இந்த லட்சணத்தில், இதன் இரண்டாம் பாகம் வருமோ என்ற கேள்வியை எழுப்புகிறது படத்தின் முடிவு. முதல் சில நிமிடங்களிலேயே ‘இப்பவே கண்ணை கட்டுதே’ என்று நொந்த நம் மனம், படம் முடியும்போது ‘அடுத்த அட்டாக்கா’ என்று அலறித் துடிக்கிறது.

சில திரைக்கதைகள் சீராகச் சென்று எங்காவது ஓரிடத்தில் சரியத் தொடங்கும். ‘ஸ்பை’யில் அது முதலிலேயே தொடங்கிவிடுகிறது. அதன்பிறகு, இரண்டு சக்கரங்களுடன் சாய்ந்தவாறே சாலையில் ஒரு கார் செல்வது போன்ற அனுபவம் நமக்குக் கிடைக்கிறது. யதார்த்தத்தை ஒட்டிய ‘ஸ்பை’ கதைகளை எழுதுவது கண்டிப்பாகச் சாத்தியம் கிடையாது.

அதனால், சாகசங்கள்தான் படத்தின் முக்கிய அம்சங்கள் என்றானபிறகு அதற்கேற்ற ’ஆக்‌ஷன் பிளாக்’குகளுக்கு கொஞ்சம் மூளையைக் கசக்கத்தான் வேண்டும். குறைந்தபட்சமாக பழைய ஜேம்ஸ்பாண்ட் படங்களைப் பார்ப்பது நல்லது. அதைக்கூடச் செய்யத் தயாராக இல்லாதபோது, இப்படிப்பட்ட ‘இஸ்பை’படங்களைப் பார்த்து ‘இஸ்ஸ்..’ என்று காது வழியே புகைவிடத்தான் வேண்டும்.

'Spy' Telugu film review: An excruciating actioner with clumsy and fraudulent storytelling

At one point in Spy, there is intense indignation on Jai (Nikhil Siddhartha)’s face as he tries to explain to his boss that he does not want to work with his ex-girlfriend  (she has honey-trapped him in the past). “She cheated me, I will work with anyone else but her,” is what he says, sighing. The hurt is not entirely different to what we feel after watching Spy. One feels cheated here as well. Now, cheating is a commonplace term in the film industry for recreating a specific location in the story in someplace more logistically feasible. This is not the same as using VFX (though that is another form of cheating). The bottomline, as the word suggests, is you have got to cheat your audience into thinking they are in that actual location.

For a story that unfolds across Amman, Kathmandu, Yangon, New York City, Galle, New Delhi and Kohima, the film makes its Hyderabad locations obvious to an unflattering effect. It almost becomes a guessing game after a point. There is Ramoji Film City. That one set where filmmakers always go to, to shoot government hospital scenes. The famed Shimla Mall road is Kathmandu here. The Old city predominantly inhabited by Muslims is the makers’ replacement for  Yangon, a Buddhist-majority city.

And the list goes on. Not being able to recreate locations well is inconsequential and forgivable, but in a film from this genre—this is an egregious transgression. The sense of vicarious joy and exploration that we wish to experience in films that jet across continents is sorely absent here. The film’s lackadaisical production values are only aggravated by the fact that the background in the film is so off-focus and blurry that I almost wondered if I was watching the film with my prescription glasses off. All of these shortcoming make Spy a rather crude and visually impoverished film. 

The makers don’t stop with the guess location game, they also urge us to play the ‘spot the cliche’ game. Janaab? Check. Abbu? Check. Bad men from Pakistan? Check. Regressive ideas? Check. RAW? Check. Sleeper cell? Check. Rogue Agent? Check. The film does not try to rise above these terms. And the writing also seems reverse-engineered just about enough for the most low-hanging jokes and oft-repeated stereotypes to come through. For instance, there is a shot of a Pakistani relishing a burger, only for an Indian “spy” to shame his country’s food shortage the very next second. 

The elephant in the room, the famed (and deeply fascinating) conspiracy theory regarding Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s death — is at best, an insect here, making a minor-sized impact to this film’s story. The legendary freedom fighter is reduced to mere clickbait here. One wonders why it even appears in the film till you see Rana make a guest appearance as a pilot. “We don’t have time for introductions” is what he brusquely says, before giving an angsty 10-minute lecture on the 1944 Battle of Kohima.

This is where the film’s true and disingenous intentions come through. Rana’s character is practically an extension of Anupam Kher’s character in Kartikeya 2. Both characters give a rousing monologue that becomes a bigger talking point in the entire film. 

The ideology is clear. The target audience is also receptive. But does anyone, let alone, the people who echo the core ideology of a film, need to endure two hours of incoherent, derivative meandering for a few minutes of chest-thumping declarations? This is cheating the art and the format of cinema itself.

Sardar movie review: Karthi shines as an action star in this flawed but watchable spy thriller

Sardar movie review: karthi-starrer spy thriller is engaging and fun despite several glaring flaws largely due to some brilliant action and the lead star..

PS Mithran is the kind of filmmaker you want to take seriously because he wants to constantly push the envelope. After making a smashing debut with Irumbu Thirai – a terrific cybercrime thriller, he followed it up with the critically acclaimed superhero thriller Hero. Mithran now makes a noteworthy comeback with Sardar, which is a fairly engaging spy thriller that addresses a very pressing issue. Despite a largely predictable second half, Sardar has some very interesting stretches and it genuinely wants to introduce Tamil audiences to the world of spies. The outcome isn’t pathbreaking but it definitely leaves you with the feeling that this story had a lot of potential. Also read: Karthi on PS1 and Sardar

Karthi plays inspector Vijay Prakash, who is hungry for publicity and would do anything to make the headlines. Thanks to his sincere efforts, Tamil Nadu Police has been a topic of constant discussion on social media. However, Vijay’s commitment towards his work is marred on account of his father, a former spy who has been branded a traitor by the government. Vijay is only looked at as the son of a spy who betrayed his own nation and this makes him grow more bitter towards his father.

When an important file goes missing from the hidden vault of R&AW wing, Vijay makes it his life’s mission to catch the person who stole the file. In the process, Vijay learns that his father, once branded as a traitor, has been rotting in a prison in Bangladesh for 32 years. Karthi also plays the father, who goes by the code name Sardar. As Vijay tries to unearth more information about his father, the story introduces him as a stage artist turned spy in the flashback. The rest of the story is about Vijay trying to find out if his father really went rogue and turned against his own nation.

Tamil cinema has had very few spy films over the years and Mithran’s Sardar, despite its share of glaring flaws, is definitely a solid addition to the list. Sardar stays as much as rooted as possible in its attempt to explore the spy genre, and that’s something that really works in the film’s favour. It’s the rootedness of the film that makes it largely entertaining.

The only major complaint with Sardar is when it also wants to become an awareness film when it talks about water mafia and how multinational corporations are cashing in on the high demand for clean drinking water. This is where the film really struggles to stay relevant and gradually turns into a boring lecture. At some point, the film isn’t sure whether it wants to be a spy film (which it could’ve been more effectively if only it didn’t try to preach a message) or an awareness film on water mafia. Bhavesh Joshi, for instance, also addressed this issue of water mafia but it left a stronger impact as a superhero film that wants to fix a problem. Unfortunately, Sardar wants to be both a spy film as well as a message-heavy awareness film and the outcome isn’t wholesomely satisfying.

Sardar is still a watchable spy thriller that’s powered by some great action set pieces. Karthi as Sardar, a spy in his 60’s, makes action look so effortless. His introduction scene amidst a prison riot has to be one of the best sequences of the movie. The action is very smartly choreographed, especially when it involves Sardar, who can’t fight like a typical hero who is in his 20s or 30s. The young Karthi is more of a crowd-pleasing character which is fun to watch initially but gets lost with no purpose in the second half of the movie. The young Rithvik is easily one of the better written child characters in recent years. He has such incredibly good screen presence.

Film industry luminaries have paid fulsome homage to Indian DoP Santosh Sivan , this year’s recipient of the annual Pierre Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography award conferred during the Cannes Film Festival .

Hosted by professional cinema lens manufacturer Angénieux at Cannes, the award pays tribute to a renowned cinematographer and recognizes an emerging talent. Estonian-U.S cinematographer Kadri Koop will receive the Angénieux special encouragement honor.

Sivan recalls using Angénieux lenses on one of his first films, “Raakh” (1989), starring Aamir Khan , and bought a couple of them subsequently. He’s been using Angénieux lenses ever since. He says that the award means a lot to him as previous recipients include DoPs he admires, including Zsigmond and Deakins.

The DoP pays homage to the rich visual culture of the southern Indian state of Kerala, where he hails from and whose ethos he is steeped in. “This award is a recognition that maybe the visual language that you speak, is understood and interesting to people all over the world,” Sivan told Variety .

On the philosophy that drives his cinematography, Sivan said, “For me, light and shade is the melody and composition and movement of camera is the rhythm. If I find that these two things are there in a shot, then I’m most excited, I like that.”

‘Emilia Pérez’ Review: Jacques Audiard’s Bonkers Trans Musical Is a Debacle You Won’t Forget

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a movie musical where the words “mammoplasty, vaginoplasty, rhinoplasty” play out in song. Nor have you lived until you’ve seen that same movie musical in which Selena Gomez says the words “My pussy still hurts when I think of you.” And you’ve never seen a movie musical at all about transness that takes as bold of swings as Jacques Audiard ‘s “Emilia Pérez,” which is stylistically unforgettable while missing the crucial element that makes any movie musical work: Actually good, memorable songs.

The movie is always invigorating to look at thanks to cinematographer Paul Guilhaume’s swirling, 35mm camera and Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet’s movements as the film shimmies across song and dance and rhyme scheme. But the emotions ultimately don’t stick, the images only able to elicit so much feeling when the characters don’t burst with interior lives transcendent of the film’s worthy message.

With all that out of the way, you wouldn’t be wrong to think this visually witty musical drama tore pages from the book of Pedro Almodóvar. Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón, in a breakout role here, certainly has the flamboyant aura and styling of an Almodóvar heroine, though as a melodrama “Emilia Pérez” lacks entirely the psychological complexity that’s made Almodóvar one of the leading filmmakers behind trans stories. The music, a collaboration of French singer Camille and Clément Ducol, hardly yields earworms even as the lyrics propel Emilia’s self-determination, Rita’s hopelessness (“my love life is a desert, my professional life a sewer”), and Jessie’s (a bleach-blond-headed Gomez who doesn’t achieve “ Only Murders in the Building ” levels here) eventual villainy. The songs tend to hover around just a few chords, and maybe the best scene from a singing standpoint is of Gomez doing actual karaoke. Never a good sign in a movie musical, where here song and dance pleasantly erupt from nowhere, and at least refreshingly without lurching transitions that get us there.

Audiard deserves credit for his adventurousness and, in both the pejorative and non-pejorative senses of the term, cinematic allyship. It’s unclear whether he ran the film’s particular language and expression of transness up the identity flagpole, and some audiences may either have a field day with Audiard’s approach or be entirely enchanted and feel seen by it. There’s almost nothing about “Emilia Pérez” that’s conventional — until the movie unravels into a third-act bit involving a hijacking, guns, and a live human body in a trunk. Which is just a reminder of where Audiard’s head really rests all along.

“Emilia Pérez” premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.
