Now you have a bunch of study quotes to go to when you need motivation. And here are some tips that may be helpful as well.

  • Honor your feelings

The lack of motivation, boredom, and anxiety can all be signs of burnout. And when you have no fuel in the tank, it’s impossible to fire up the engine. So instead of criticizing your reluctance to study, write down how you feel.

It may also help to track your prime time and downtime. Maybe you are a morning person who performs the best in the early hours. Or perhaps you are the opposite. Schedule your study accordingly and do the most challenging tasks in your prime time.

  • Schedule breaks

You are not tired for no reason, especially when it’s chronic. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is to take a break. So don’t forget to arrange break time in between your day.

The Pomodoro method may be a good place to start. Study for 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break and repeat. Use a timer, so you don’t need to check the time.

  • Find a study buddy

If you have a group of friends or a classmate to study with, it’s easier to keep yourself accountable.

  • Write down your goal

What are your goals? Goals can be the best motivator. So take a piece of paper and write down your goals. Don’t forget to include both short-term and long-term goals.

Short-term goals can be finishing your paper by next Tuesday or getting an A at finals. Long-term goals may be getting into your ideal college. Include both so you have something to keep you excited for now and in the long run.

When you enrolled, there was this hunger for learning inside you and all you have to do is find that motivation again.

Use the following quotes to rediscover your love for learning:

Education Prepares You for the Future

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

– Malcolm X

What you learn in college today prepares you for making your own way on the job market in the future. You won’t be able to use everything you learned but you’ll have a great foundation to build on. And don’t underestimate the power of learning soft skills like teamwork, time management, and critical thinking as you work your way through group projects and deadlines.

Be Patient and Take Small Steps

“A little progress each day adds up to big results.”

– Satya Nani

Satya Nani quote on a beige background with a stairs symbol - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Don’t expect that you’ll be able to take in everything you need to study quickly and without difficulty. Give yourself the time to take small steps and divide big topics into smaller chunks. You’ll learn something new every day, which means you’re making progress every day.

Mastering a Skill Takes Time

“Skill is only developed by hours and hours of work.”

– Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt quote with a man whos overwhelmed with work - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Mastering a skill means putting in the time and effort it takes to become good at something. It’s easy to see a master at work and forget that it took hours of work to get to that level. If you set your mind to it and train or study hard, you can learn any skill you want.

Just Get Started

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”

– Walt Disney

Walt Disney quote with a road to the sky in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Too often we get stuck in a limbo of talking about or dreaming about beginning a project instead of just getting started. It’s the fear of failure that makes us come up with excuses but it’s okay to make mistakes. You’ll never grow if you don’t get started and make mistakes along the way.

What You Learn is Yours Forever

“The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you.”

– B.B. King

B.B King quote with a whiteboard in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

What you’re studying today, nobody can take away from you again. Knowledge is a power that stays with you as long as you keep using it. Use this power wisely to grow and become the person you want to be.

Seize the Day

It can be hard to get up in the morning and be fully committed to and motivated for the day ahead. It’s important to have a vision and goals that make you want to get up but it’s hard to determine what they are. Brainstorming and  creating a vision board  can help you decide what your vision should be to get you motivated.

Here are our inspirational quotes for students to help you follow the motto of ‘Carpe Diem!’:

Start Your Day With Positive Thinking

“Just one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.”

– Dalai Lama

Dalai Lama quote with a sunrise landscape in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Starting your day with a positive attitude towards learning and your life of study can be an enormous help to make your day in school or university go smoothly. Just a few minutes of reflection and writing down one positive thought in a gratitude journal every day will gradually form a more positive outlook. You might not see the effects immediately but if you tend to worry, try it and see the difference it can make to your day.

Focus on the Here and Now

“You can’t have a better tomorrow if you’re still thinking about yesterday.”

– Charles F. Kettering

Charles F. Kettering quote with symbols in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Sometimes exams or essays might not go as planned and you find yourself mulling over what you should have done better over and over again. This is a waste of your brainpower and time. Instead of thinking about what you did wrong, write down lessons learned and apply them to your next project. This way, you can move on and make things better next time.

Don’t Keep Waiting for a Better Tomorrow

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

– Anne Frank

Anne Frank quote on a blue background with a symbol for increase - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Every day you start a new day you get the chance to improve and learn something new. Sometimes it’s easy to fall into a pattern of a better tomorrow when you keep pushing a project or studying for an exam to the following day. To seize the day, see what you can do today to improve your world.

Create Opportunities for Yourself

“If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.”

– Milton Berle

Milton Berle quote with a opened door in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

It takes courage to follow your own path and generate opportunities for yourself, but there are ways to do so. Always be on the lookout for new opportunities that help you to move your studies along. If you find a topic hard to understand, find a study group to help you or be proactive in going to extra tutorial sessions.

Success Has to Start Somewhere

“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.”

– Gail Devers

Gail Devers quote with a sprinter at the start in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Sometimes all the group projects and exams seem to add up to an unconquerable mountain of workload. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by college work, focus on what you’re getting started with first instead of planning too far into the future. Think about it this way: Anything you’ve accomplished so far, you started somewhere.

Overcoming Procrastination

Procrastination is the arch-nemesis of every student. Usually based on anxiety or fear of failure, procrastination can become a bad habit that students develop over the years. Creating a structure for your studies by spreading out the work with regular breaks helps.

Here are some quotes to combat procrastination and win the fight by being more productive:

Don’t Make Studying Harder Than it Should Be

“Procrastination makes easy things hard and hard things harder.”

– Mason Cooley

Mason Cooley quote with a woman struggling with work in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

This is an important statement for all the students, who tend to pull all-nighters. Frantically trying to get an essay in the night before it’s due only makes your life harder. Instead of procrastinating until the deadline is only a day away, think about how much time you need for research and writing. Then plan to spread it across a few productive afternoons in the library.

Seize Your Opportunity to Shine

“Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin.”

– Victor Kiam

Victor Kiam quote on a purple background with a 'Last Minute' image at the bottom - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If you’re procrastinating, you miss the opportunity to show your best work. Anything that you create that has been well thought out and reviewed before submission will be better than a quickly patched together project or essay. Don’t let procrastination get in the way of your opportunity to shine!

Manage Your Time Wisely

“Procrastination is the thief of time.”

– Edward Young

Edward Young quote with a purple background and a hourglass - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

It happens to the best of us. Instead of working on your group project, studying for your exam, or writing your essay, you decide to watch that show on Netflix or play that game on your console. Suddenly you awake from a haze of procrastination and hours have passed.

You’re not sure where the time went but it’s gone. To avoid procrastination eating your precious time like that, plan your day making sure you achieve a balance between studying and breaks. During breaks, you can enjoy your favorite activities.

Create Healthy Habits to Combat Procrastination

“Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.”

– George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver quote with a pile books on the right - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Procrastination often comes from a lack of motivation and a fear of failure that leads us to make excuses instead of getting started on work. This is a vicious cycle, as it’s much more likely to fail or make mistakes if you rush a project or essay to hand it in last minute. Fight procrastination with healthy habits that help you to manage your time.

Accept that There Will Be a Learning Curve

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

– Zig Ziglar

Zig Ziglar quote with light bulb symbols in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Fight the fear of failure with a positive attitude towards your studies. It’s natural to make mistakes when you’re learning something new. Remember that if you’re not getting started you can’t succeed either.

Quotes to Encourage a Positive Mindset

When student life gets tough with exams and due dates piling up, maintaining a positive mindset can be hard. It’s important though to look at the bright side to keep motivated and cultivate good mental health throughout your studies.

We’ve collected some quotes to inspire a positive mindset:

Stay Positive and Good Things Will Happen to You

“Optimism is a happiness magnet. If you stay positive, good things and good people will be drawn to you.”

– Mary Lou Retton

Mary Lou Retton quote with a colorful background and a 'positivity' image on the right - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If you stay positive and surround yourself with friends that cheer you up, you’ll find that happiness won’t be so hard to achieve. Spread positivity and it will be reflected right back at you. Your friends and anyone new you meet at school or university will be happy to have a study buddy with a positive attitude.

Use Positivity to Achieve Your Goals

“Your positive action combined with positive thinking results in success.”

– Shiv Khera

Shiv Khera quote with two business partners hugging in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Make sure you translate your positive thinking into actions to keep moving forward with your studies. Instead of a negative no-can-do attitude switch to a can-do philosophy. Don’t be afraid to try new things! College is for exploring and discovering new skills.

Combat Perfectionism with a Positive Attitude

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

– Arthur Ashe

Arthur Ashe quote with a desk in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Don’t get entangled in your inner critic’s judgemental comments. Sometimes you need to let perfectionism go and take a more positive stance of doing the best that you can with the resources you have at your disposal. Not everything you do in school or college will be perfect but you should always be able to say that you did the best you could.

Belief in Yourself

“To be an overachiever you have to be an over-believer.”

– Dabo Swinney

Dabo Swinney quote with an image of the sky in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If you’re planning to go beyond expectations in your studies, the first thing you need to do is to believe in yourself that you can. To be successful, let go of your fears and embrace a positive attitude. Know what you’re capable of and have a vision in mind of what it will be like when you achieve your goals.

Strengthen Your Faith in Your Success

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”

– Helen Keller

Helen Keller quote on a purple background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Find things to do that give you confidence outside of your studies. See it as a study break to build up your confidence that will help you to stay optimistic. This can range from activities like making art to regular training sessions to keep fit. The little moments of success you have when you’re doing what you like best give you courage and hope.

Bounce Back from Failure

Getting back on track when your results didn’t go as planned is one of the hardest things you’ll do throughout your school and university career. It’s important to not get disheartened when you had to face a setback. Mistakes are part of the learning curve and help you to improve.

Here are some inspirational quotes to help you when it feels like things aren’t working out for you:

Have Faith and Be Patient When Times Are Hard

“Fall seven times, stand up eight.”

– Japanese Proverb

Japanese Proverb quote with a man leaning his head on a wall out of frustration - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

No matter how many times you fail, always get straight back up and try again. Trust yourself to succeed eventually. Even if it took you a little longer than usual, you’ll get there. Instead of giving up, find patience within yourself and give yourself the time you need.

Keep Trying New Things

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

– Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein quote with a notebook and crumpled paper on a desk - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Instead of being worried about trying something new, embrace the possibility of failure and focus on enjoying the learning experience. It would be boring to master everything immediately without making a few mistakes on the way that help you improve. If you go into new experiences in college with an open and excited mindset, you’ll be able to shrug off anything that goes wrong.

Move on to Better Opportunities

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been given a no. Only to find that a better, brighter, bigger yes was right around the corner.”

– Arlan Hamilton

Arlan Hamilton quote with a woman stretching both arms in the nature in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Rejection is hard to accept but don’t let one person telling you no get you down. A more interesting project might be waiting for you right around the corner. You’re going to meet many teachers and students throughout your school and university career. Some will agree with you and some won’t but that shouldn’t block you from carving your own path.

Embrace Failure as a Means to Success

“We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes – understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.”

– Ariana Huffington

Ariana Huffington quote on a green background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Making the wrong choice sometimes is part of life. Accepting that you’re not perfect and that mistakes happen is the first step towards bouncing back from failure more easily. You’ll come to view your mistakes as just another step on your way to success.

Success Comes at the Prize of Previous Failures

“I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

– Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan quote with a woman in boxing gloves in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If even someone as successful and popular as Michael Jordan admits that he fails over and over again, you can stop being hard on yourself. Everyone fails once in a while. The trick is to get back up again and keep taking steps towards your goals.

Practice Kindness and Self-Care

When you’re caught up in a study marathon, you might forget about taking care of yourself and neglect your relationships. However, self-care is crucial to maintain a good balance between studying and relaxing time. Try to practice one of your hobbies regularly to give yourself some time out and to recharge. Avoid becoming a hermit every time you need to study and use your breaks to talk to friends and family.

We’ve collected some words of wisdom on kindness and self-care for you:

Spread Positivity Through Kindness

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

– Jennifer Dukes Lee

Jennifer Dukes Lee quote with purple flowers in a field in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

When we rush through our days in the fast-paced world of today, we can sometimes forget to be kind. You might get frustrated with the speed that exams come around or fixated on those deadlines and forget everyone and everything else around you. Combat this unhealthy state of mind by stopping yourself every once in a while and looking around you to notice what’s happening outside of your bubble of study frenzy.

Offer Yourself Kindness

“Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves that we would give to others.”

– Christopher Germer

Christopher Germer quote with a green background and little heart symbols - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Don’t neglect self-compassion and kindness during your studies. To have the capacity for compassion towards others, you need to be kind to yourself first. To be self-compassionate, offer yourself the same understanding that you would a friend. Know that you’re not alone in this and that many other students face similar issues. This will help shift your perspective and make you feel more connected.

Help Wherever You Can

“Go into the world and do well. But more importantly, go into the world and do good.”

– Minor Myers Jur

Minor Myers Jur quote with a man helping his collegues at work in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If you’re good at a subject, there’s no better feeling than helping a friend who’s struggling with it. If you’re doing well, you can share some of your good fortunes in this way. Students should stick together and help each other out. It’s not only more fun but helps developing friendships that will last a lifetime.

Use Self-Care to Stay on Track

“Self-discipline is self-caring.”

– M. Scott Peck

M. Scott Peck quote on a yellow background with a 'Discipline' image at the bottom - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Self-care is important to build up resilience for staying disciplined and productive. If you can get rid of your inner critic, you’ll be able to spend more time working on your study goals instead of mulling over what went wrong. Practice self-compassion and don’t get caught up in harsh judgments you might make about yourself.

Developing Self-Compassion Takes Time

“Be patient with yourself. Self-growth is tender; it’s holy ground. There’s no greater investment.”

– Stephen Covey

Stephen Covey quote with a pencil writing 'patience' in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If you’re working on being more compassionate towards yourself, you also have to learn to be patient with yourself. Making peace with your inner critic is not an easy task and takes time. Accept that you’ll learn and grow and you’re well on your way towards greater resilience against whatever life throws at you.

Believe in Yourself and Persevere

Perseverance is deeply rooted in an unwavering belief in yourself. To endure the times when you’re overwhelmed by deadlines and exams, you need to believe that you can get to the finish line. When you’re struggling, take a step back and look at what you’ve accomplished so far. This will give you new energy and a positive outlook. You’ve done it before, so you can do it again!

Here are our inspirational quotes to keep you going:

Trust Yourself to Succeed

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

– Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison quote with an image of the sky in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

When it seems like you can’t go any further, the solution to your problem might just be waiting around the corner. So don’t give up and trust that you’ll find a way. You don’t want to risk giving up right before you succeed.

Mindset is Everything

“Just believe in yourself. Even if you don’t pretend that you do and, at some point, you will.”

-Venus Williams

Venus Williams quote with a schoolkid standing in front of a whiteboard in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If you’re struggling with having faith in yourself and your skills, try pretending that you can do anything you set your mind to. Practice this for a while and observe how your mindset changes. You might find that you have a more positive outlook and start believing in yourself more.

There’s More to You Than Meets the Eye

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”

– A.A Milne

A.A Milne quote on a orange background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Sometimes you don’t know what you’re capable of until life tests you. The pressures of doing well in your degree can be such a test. Look at it as a quest to prove to yourself how strong and smart you are. This way you get to know yourself better and your student life becomes the perfect preparation for your life after graduation.

Endurance Is Key

“Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.”

– Walter Elliot

Walter Eliot quote with a sprinter in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If you master perseverance, it’s something that will be with you all your life. It’s about having the will to keep going and taking one step after the other even when the odds aren’t in your favor. Take exams and deadlines one by one instead of getting overwhelmed by what can seem to be a very long journey towards your graduation.

Keep Moving Forward No Matter What Happens

“You don’t drown by falling in the water; you drown by staying there.”

Ed Cole quote with an image of the sea in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Even when it seems hard to keep going, choose to move forward. You can’t accomplish anything by just stopping and staying where you are. Have faith that you’re trying your best and that you’re studying as hard as you can. Keep moving until you reach your goals.

Inspiration to Read More

Reading is one of the best and most pleasurable things to do to sharpen the mind. It’s more than just learning facts and dates from school books. Books widen your horizon and make you see different perspectives. Reading fosters an understanding of the world that would be hard to achieve otherwise.

We’ve collected a few words of wisdom for times when you’ve forgotten about the benefits and pleasures of reading:

Your Path to Greater Knowledge

“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

– Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss quote with a man with headphones in a library reads on his laptop in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Reading means knowledge. With every book you read, you learn and with the help of your imagination, you can go anywhere you like. Reading lets you enter spaces that would otherwise be hard or impossible to travel to like distant countries, fictional worlds, or states of mind.

Use Books to Escape

“That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.”

– Jhumpa Lahiri

Jhumpa Lahiri quote with a woman on a hammock reading a book by the sea in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Even when you have to read a lot for school or university, don’t forget to pick up a book for yourself as a means of escape every once in a while. Even though it might seem counterintuitive to read even more during your study breaks, it’s refreshing and relaxing to read for pleasure and enter a different world for a while.

Reading Opens Your Mind to New Experiences

“Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.”

Jim Rohn quote with a forest in the nackground and a close up of a woman's eyes - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Reading fosters a more open mind and takes you beyond knowledge. Rather than just taking in information like a computer, you can gain a deeper understanding of the human condition.

Through empathy with the characters you read about, you get to see different worldviews. This will help you keep an open mind for meeting new people and having new experiences during your studies and the rest of your life.

Tap into the Wisdom of the Past

“The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest (people) of the past centuries.”

– Descartes

Descartes quote with a pile of books in front of a wooden wall as a background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

A book is your window to the knowledge of the past. Every book is an opportunity to learn from a smart person that you most likely never get a chance to talk to otherwise. Even if they died long ago, their words live on for you to study.

Read Your Way to Success

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”

– Margaret Fuller

Margaret Fuller quote with an adult sitting at a table reading a book in a library in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Many successful leaders are also avid readers. Applying their knowledge from books directly or indirectly, they paved their way towards success. Even though it can be hard sometimes to motivate yourself for all the reading you have to do throughout your school and university career, it’s essential to read widely to reach your goals.

Even if you’re looking forward to not spending hours studying in the library anymore after graduation, you’ll see that the process of learning never really stops. School and university can prepare you for life in many ways, but life itself will keep teaching you new lessons. That way you’ll keep learning something new every day.

Keep Learning Every Day

“Education is something we have to keep pursuing day after day.”

– Premier Brian Gallant

Premier Brian Gallant quote with road in a big city in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Create Your Own Future

“The best way to predict your future is to create it.”

– Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln quote with a road in the middle of nature as a background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Whether you’re unsure about your plans for the future, or a million ideas are running through your head, don’t just keep thinking about it but take action. Planning is great but at some point, it’s time to get started on forging your own path. If you don’t begin to walk on it, you’ll never know where it will take you.

Be Brave and Be Yourself

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”

– E.E. Cummings

E.E. Cummings quote with a woman in sportswear jumping from a great height in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Lifelong Learning

Even after your graduation, you’ll continue to learn and grow. Your formal education might be completed but the new lessons of life await. Just like throughout school and university, you’ll face challenges, make mistakes, and get back up on your feet again to continue and grow.

We’ve collected some powerful quotes to inspire you on your path of lifelong learning:

Continue to Look for Sparks of Inspiration

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited.”

Plutarch quote with a black background and horizontal flame - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

When you left university, find more time to look at other areas that have always interested you. Even after years of education, your mind won’t be filled up. You’re only getting started. Be sure to keep challenging yourself and finding those sparks of inspiration.

Retain a Childlike Curiosity

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”

– Henry Ford

Henry Ford quote with three children reading their books in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Always remember to stay curious about learning new techniques or gaining new knowledge. Even as you get further away from your formal education in years, retain a childlike curiosity that keeps you young. This stops you from stagnating in your job and you’ll keep growing.

Help to Create a Better World

“Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world.”

– Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela quote with an origami of the planet in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

Don’t underestimate the power of education when it comes to changing the world. Critical thinking and research to see the grey areas rather than view the world in black and white are crucial skills when you’re looking to improve the world around us. Use this power of yours wisely!

Find Wisdom Through Education

“Wisdom…. comes not from age, but from education and learning.”

– Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov quote with a woman stretching and breathing with a view of the open sky in the background - Best inspirational and motivational quotes for college students - Image

If you want to achieve wisdom in life, you have to keep learning. You can learn from experience as you get older but also make conscious efforts to add to your education. A hunger for learning is essential to finding wisdom.

Do What You Love and Keep Learning

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

– Mahatma Gandhi

Live your life like there’s no tomorrow and don’t hesitate to do what you love. Part of that is also to keep on learning and evolving. If you could live forever, you’d want to keep it exciting, which means that you’ll always have to be on the lookout for learning something new.

51 Motivational Quotes For Students Who Need Inspiration

Lauren Holliday

The struggle is real -- especially for students and recent grads.

I know because once upon a time I was a college student, and it wasn’t exactly fun. You have to juggle working with interning with studying with going to class and attempting to have a social life.

Then, you graduate, and you still find yourself poor and underemployed. It can suck. But eventually, if you keep on fighting through the suckiness, you’ll get past the crappy stage and into the prospering phase. I know this because I’ve made it past that hump. And if I can do it, you can do it.

One thing that got me through the bad times was motivational quotes. My thinking is that they can help you too. That’s why I collected a massive list of encouraging quotes for work, for school, and for life! I hope they help you as much as they’ve helped me.

Motivational quotes by famous people

1. michael jordan.

motivational quote michael jordan

I love this inspirational quote by Michael Jordan because it's easy to forget that the more you do, the more you fail. As they say: "You win some. You lose most."

If you're not failing, then you're either not doing enough, and/or you're not challenging yourself enough.

Not only that, when you graduate and step into the real world, you won't have a syllabus or an academic calendar that tells you exactly what you can expect for every day of the year. That's a big deal. That fact alone is why you're going to fail a lot at first. Just remember it's a learning experience , and the more you practice, the more you'll succeed.

2. Seth Godin

motivational quote seth godin

Seth Godin  reminds us that the majority of people will try to shoot down our dreams. They'll poke holes in your work, your dreams and your ideas -- especially when you have little experience and are just starting out. Keep an open mind and listen to their suggestions, but don't let them deplete you or even stop you.

As one of my mentors always says: "You only need one yes." One day, you'll get that "yes," and you'll be so glad you didn't listen to the naysayers.

3. Oprah Winfrey

motivational quote oprah winfrey

Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life becuase you become what you believe.

When you think of Oprah Winfrey, you probably think of a freakin' superhero. I don't blame you. She is an incredibly influential and successful woman and the queen of a multimedia empire. How could anyone but a superhero do that, right? Wrong. Winfrey reminds us that she was an ordinary person who dared to dream of extraordinary things. You can do the same. You should do the same!

4. Tupac Shakur

motivational quote tupac shakur

So many of us overanalyze failures -- or what feels like failures -- over and over again in our heads. This is not good because then we begin to believe we are a failure.

In this quote, Tupac Shakur is telling us that just because something ends -- a job, a relationship, whatever -- life still goes on. You have the power to forget about it, and move the eff on.

5. Martin Luther King

motivational quote martin luther king (mlk)

We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in life, you're going to face A LOT of disappointments. You may not get that dream job you wanted or your boyfriend might dump you or you might not get that dream job and your boyfriend might dump you simultaneously.

Whatever the disappointment is, you must remain hopeful because, after all, hope is what keeps us alive.

6. Peter Thiel

Traditions are like cliches. They are everywhere. They may sometimes even be correct, but often they are justified by nothing except constant repetition.

At the beginning of Peter Thiel's commencement speech, we learn he almost didn't become the founder of PayPal. Instead, he almost became a lawyer, but when he didn't get a coveted clerkship, he decided to give up being a lawyer, and instead, he founded PayPal.

This is what Thiel had to say about it:

“Looking back at my ambition to become a lawyer, it looks less like a plan for the future and more like an alibi for the present. It was a way to explain to anyone who would ask—to my parents, to my peers, and most of all to myself—that there was no need to worry. I was perfectly on track. But it turned out in retrospect that my biggest problem was taking the track without thinking really hard about where it was going.”

Some of you may be considering graduate school simply because you have no idea what the hell you want to do with your life. Most of the time -- unless you want to be a doctor or a lawyer -- more school isn't the answer. Figuring out what you're good at and what you enjoy doing is.

7. Tina Fey

motivational quote tina fey

There will always be assholes in the workplace, which is why Tina Fey's quote is so important. You don't want jerks to get away with holding you back, but you also don't want them to make you miserable. What a quandary, right?

Fey's suggestion? Ignore them and reallocate all that pent up energy you would've spent hating them to positive energy you use to outperform them.

8. Desmond Tutu

motivational quote desmond tutu

If you're neutral in situation of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.

At work, you'll inevitably notice a lot of "yes men." Yes men just do as they're told. They don't ruffle feathers. And they never speak up -- even when they know something a superior is doing is wrong and hurting the business.

Please don't ever be one of these people, who either doesn't speak up or doesn't support someone who does speak up, when you know they're actually right.

Why? I want a steady paycheck you say, and so you'd rather not tell your boss he's wrong. I get it. I do. But there's safety in numbers. If you know something is wrong, speak up and/or stand up for the people who aren't afraid to speak up. Your voice can make a difference.

9. Dharmesh Shah

motivational quote darmesh shah

Success is making the people who believed in you look brilliant.

There are going to be people who believe in you and those who won't. When you find a mentor or a boss or even a friend -- anyone who believes for you, sticks up for you, gives you a job or a reference when you're inexperienced -- TLDR: Don't make them regret it. They took a chance on you, so you owe them your everything to be a success.

10. Ray Allen

motivational quote ray allen

Don’t ever put yourself in the position to wish you could hop in a time machine.

Ray Allen really moved me in his " Letter to My Younger Self ." His father was in the military because they moved a lot, and the kids made fun of him because he "talked like a white boy."

At the time, he felt pretty alone, so he focused all of his energy into basketball. Still to this day, he pretty much is alone, he admits. But, today, he's at peace with his life and happy.

When you're younger, life is all about fitting in, but when you're older, life is all about standing out. Standing out is how you land jobs, how you get paid more and how you make it to the top. So don't steer away from standing out. Embrace it.

11. Ira Glass

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

I remember my first eBook, my first email campaign, and my first blog post, unfortunately. It's unfortunate because they all sucked. But here I am seven years later successfully doing these things without wanting to cry every time I do.

You have to be persistent. Great athletes don't become great players overnight. They persist. They keep going back to the court or the field. You know why? Because they love what they do.

Find something you love to do, and then don't stop doing it. Keep practicing.

12. Tim Cook

You don't have to choose between doing good and doing well.

I wasted two years of my life pursuing business school, regardless of the fact that I sucked (and despised) at math. Business classes were all math all the time, and it made me delay doing my passion -- writing.

One day, I remember calling my father crying. I told him I couldn't take it anymore. I needed to study something I was good at -- writing. I was told him I thought I wanted to apply to journalism school. I'll never forget what he said to me:

"Lauren, do what you love, and the money will follow."

Don't tell him I said this... But he was right.

How many of you enrolled in a major that you're not good at or don't enjoy? Just stop. Take a moment to figure out where you are excelling in life, and think about giving that an honest try. You can and should make money doing what you love because then you will do great work.

13. Dr. Seuss

motivational quote dr. seuss

You have to be odd to be No. 1.

This quote pretty much speaks for itself. (And Dr. Seuss was never a man of many words)

14. Steve Jobs

I saved the best for last: Steve Jobs .

"I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle."

Don’t settle, but also, don’t take Jobs’ quote the wrong way. It takes time to find the perfect career if there is such a thing. You have to take on less exciting gigs before you make it to Oz. If you don’t then you may never get there.

Keep testing different career paths and skill sets by freelancing. Apply to jobs for interview experience, but if it’s a job you won’t be happy at, or don’t feel right about (assuming you’re making money freelancing), then don’t accept the offer — even if it is for more money.

Don’t settle for a full-time job you hate. Hack freelancing until you know what it is that you want out of a career, which may not turn out to be an actual full-time, in-office gig.

18. find an enemy.

motivational quote legally blonde

Try to live everyday like Elle Woods after Warner told her she wasn't smart enough for law school.

For the weirdos who haven't seen Legally Blonde (and you should), Elle Woods applies (and gets into) Harvard after her ex-boyfriend, Warner, breaks up with her.

What Elle didn't know was that Warner had dumped her for a new, "more serious" girlfriend. Just when she was about to pack up and move home, devastated, she got mad.

By the end of the movie, she had won her first real law case and graduated as valedictorian of her class.

Yes, this is a movie, but it also has a little nugget of wise advice in it: Find an enemy .

That's what DJ Khaled does anyways. And as it turns out, so do a lot of successful people .

19. Swag < Gas

Quote about swag

Want to know a funny thing about rich people?

You'd never know they're rich unless you were close to them. That's because rich people don't typically buy fancy cars -- if they even own a car. They don't make it rain on everyone in the club. They work. And they work a lot. And they save a lot -- that is, after all, how they got rich in the first place.

If you have massive dreams -- like to own a football team someday -- you have to plan and save for that far, far in advance. In the words of Gary Vaynerchuk :

Nobody -- unless they were a trust fund baby -- ever bought the Rams when they go skiing for a week when they're 24.

Motivational quotes about work

20. you can fail at anything.

Motivational quote about failure

Some of you may be choosing a career you're not excited about -- in fact, a lot of you may be. Whether you're trying to please your parents or trying to keep a steady paycheck, remember that nothing in life is guaranteed.

You can work at the same job for 49 years, and one day, they could just fire you; give you one week of severance pay, and send you on your way. They may not even want to. Maybe the company got acquired or the company is not making enough money and needs to cut staff.

In life, you just never really know so take a logical chance on something you actually enjoy doing.

21. Accomplish something

Quotes about accomplishment

22. Hustle, hustle real hard

"If you can work 40 hours a week and be satisfied with what you have, more power to you. I definitely plan to work less than 40 hours a week during retirement. However, if you are complaining about life and why you don’t have enough money and only work 40 hours a week, you need to get your head checked. We live in a very competitive society and anybody who wants to be better than average can’t work 40 hours and expect to be more than they’re not."

Do people really only work 40 hours per week or less ? That's a question that sends Financial Samurai into a rant that I can't help but agree with.

It's a great article. Read it .

23. Do a good job

Do a good job motivational quote

24. Your shoes don't matter

Inspirational quote about accomplishment

25. Don't be normal

"Most importantly, if you can at all avoid it, don't be normal. Strive, burn and do everything you can to avoid being the industry standard. Even the highest industry standard. Be greater than anything anyone else has ever dreamed of you. Don't settle for pats on the back, salary increases, a nod-and-a-smile. Instead, rage against the tepidness of the mundane with every fiber of whatever makes you, you. Change this place ."

26. Mediocre - meh

Don't be mediocre quote

You did not wake up to mediocre.

27. You have the power to do more

Change-maker quote

I urge each and every one of you to seek out projects that leave the world a better place than you found it. We used to design ways to get to the moon; now we design ways to never have to get out of bed. You have the power to change that.

Motivational quotes about success

Motivational quote about success

Profit is the reward for correctly understanding an aspect of reality ahead of your peers.

29. Understand the Law of Averages

The odds are never going to be in your favor, but if you keep playing you’re gonna win.

30. Consistency is key

Lifelong learning quote

No matter which career you choose, in today's overly competitive market, you have to be a serial learner. Serial learners are naturally curious. They're great at Google. And they find blogs and influencers to follow and read on the reg.

31. Rejection is good

Motivation after rejection

32. Know what you want

There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.

33. Build your own solution

Inspirational quote about making a change

Never bring your boss -- or anyone for that matter -- a problem without a potential solution. People will think you're a Negative Nancy and only see problems in things. Always offer a solution(s).

Take Uber CEO Travis Kalanick , for example. He didn't just hate taxi cabs and complain about it. He went out and designed his own solution.

34. Practice

Motivational quote about practicing

35. Persist

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."

Just because you have a college education does not make you entitled to success. You must have grit, persistance and determination.

36. Don't give up

Never give up quote

This quote actually reminds me of a quote by Will Smith:

"The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is I'm not afraid to die on a treadmill. I will not be out-worked, period. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me, you might be all of those things you got it on me in nine categories. But if we get on the treadmill together, there's two things: You're getting off first, or I'm going to die. It's really that simple, right?"

It really is that simple. The harder you hustle, the more you win, and the more you win, the more you get.

Motivational quotes about life

Motivational learning quote

You must learn how to learn. No one trains people anymore. You have to figure stuff out on your own. You want to be "problem solver." Bosses love problem solvers because they find solutions to their problems without bothering their bosses every two seconds.

Be proactive. Figure out what your boss needs to get done, then get it done... right. This isn't as difficult as it may seem. Just get really good at Googling, and make friends with a lot of people smarter than you.

38. Don't be vanilla

Don't be vanilla quote

The world wants you to be vanilla.

39. You are who you're around

"The most frequent life advice I give people is, be really careful who your friends are. Your friends should be better than you. Your friends should take you to new levels. A lot of people will just hang out with the same friends, and they don’t see that their friends are pulling them down. My mother used to tell me if you hang around with dogs, you become a dog. You’ve got to know when to find new friends."

For a long time, I tried to fit in with the wrong people -- "the cool kids." Today, those cool kids are still where they were in high school. They don't have careers. They're still waitressing. They're still partying until four in the morning.

If I kept hanging around with them, I'd be where they are -- nowhere.

So, yeah, choose your friends wisely.

40. Anything is possible

Anything is possible motivational quote

41. You have power

The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.

The most common example of this mistake is job interviews.

When you walk into a job interview, remember the interview is a two-way conversation. You need to make sure they're also a good fit for you.

I won't go into the intricacies of negotiation, but you definitely should learn more about it here and  here .

42. Your twenties are the defining decade

Don't be defined by what you didn't know or didn't do.

“Our twenties are the defining decade of adulthood. Eighty percent of life’s most defining moments take place by about age 35. Two-thirds of lifetime wage growth happens during the first ten years of a career. More than half of Americans are married or are dating or living with their future partner by age 30. Personality can change more during our twenties than at any other decade in life. Female fertility peaks at 28. The brain caps off its last major growth spurt. When it comes to adult development, 30 is not the new 20. Even if you do nothing, not making choices is a choice all the same. Don’t be defined by what you didn’t know or didn’t do.”

The above is no one's opinion. It is cold, hard facts.

Your twenties set the stage for the rest of your life. How well you do in your twenties is directly correlated to how well you'll do in your thirties and forties. If you don't take them seriously, you will wake up one day, and regret it.

Consider skipping that third Spring Weekend in a row, and consider taking on an internship or working as a volunteer. Whatever you do, don't forget to gain identity capital, aka professional work experience.

Not getting what you want quote

Sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.

It's hard to trust that everything happens for a reason when you don't get something you worked really hard for or wanted really badly. I know this because I haven't gotten a lot of things I've wanted in life. But as it turned out, things always worked out perfectly -- usually even better.

44. Don't settle

It's death to settle for things in life.

45. Change your life

Change your life quote

Nobody owes you anything. Remember that, and you'll be golden.

46. Make good decisions

The quality of our lives depends on the quality of the decisions we make. We literally make millions of decisions that add up to the consequences that are our lives.

47. Your life is up to you

Get better inspirational quote

If you want better, go get better.

48. Love > Like

“Like is watered-down love. Like is mediocre. Like is a wishy-washy emotion of the content. Athletes don’t do it for the like of the sport. Artists don’t suffer for the like of art. There is no “I like NY shirt,” and Romeo didn’t just like Juliet. LOVE. Now that’s the powerful stuff. Love changes things -- upset things -- conquers things. Love is at the root of everything good that has ever happened and will ever happen.”

49. No = good

Motivational rejection quote

50. Turn bad into good

Broken heart quote

Take your broken heart, and make it into art.

Life is going to break your heart nine ways to Sunday. Don't let it break you though. Mope for a day, or even just an hour, and then drop all of your emotions into something productive.

Whether that's writing or learning Excel, it doesn't matter. Just find something to distract yourself from your broken heart. It works.

51. Just keep swimming

Enthusiasm is common inspiring quote

How bad do you want to be successful?

I'll leave you with this motivational video. I hope it motivates you as much as it motivates me. Good luck!

Homework Quotes

positive homework quotes for students

Nothing is more powerful for your future than being a gatherer of good ideas and information. That's called doing your homework.

A genius is a talented person who does his homework.

Homework strongly indicates that the teachers are not doing their jobs well enough during the school day. It's not like they'll let you bring your home stuff to school and work on it there. You can't say, 'I didn't finish sleeping at home, so I have to work on finishing my sleep here.

Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. As a result, a genius is often a talented person who has simply done all of his homework.

Homework is a term that means grown up imposed yet self-afflicting torture.

Persistence is important in every endeavor. Whether it's finishing your homework, completing school, working late to finish a project, or "finishing the drill" in sports, winners persist to the point of sacrifice in order to achieve their goals.

I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework.

Homework, I have discovered, involves a sharp pencil and thick books and long sighs.

You will never get anywhere if you do not do your homework.

We're doing our homework to make sure we're prepared.

Do your homework or hire wise experts to help you. Never jump into a business you have no idea about.

When was the last time you used the words 'teach me'? Maybe not since you started first grade? Here's an irony about school: The daily grind of tests, homework, and pressures sometimes blunts rather than stimulates a thirst for knowledge.

The more you do your homework, the more you're free to be intuitive. But you've got to put the work in.

College is about three things: homework, fun, and sleep...but you can only choose two.

The best schools tend to have the best teachers, not to mention parents who supervise homework, so there is less need for self-organised learning. But where a child comes from a less supportive home environment, where there are family tensions perhaps, their schoolwork can suffer. They need to be taught to think and study for themselves.

One of life's most painful moments comes when we must admit that we didn't do our homework, that we are not prepared.

To overcome stress you have to find out something. You've got to do some research and homework. You need to find out who you are today.

My life is a black hole of boredom and despair." "So basically you've been doing homework." "Like I said, black hole.

Do your homework, study the craft, believe in yourself, and out-work everyone.

Do as much homework as you can. Learn everybody's job and don't just settle.

If you want to be lucky, do your homework.

I'm learning skills I will use for the rest of my life by doing homework...procrastinating and negotiation.

You have got to pay attention, you have got to study and you have to do your homework. You have to score higher than everybody else. Otherwise, there is always somebody there waiting to take your place.

You don’t get rich off your day job, you get rich off your homework.

It turns out that parents are right to nag: To succeed in school, kids should do their homework.

Duke University researchers have reviewed more than 60 research studies on homework between 1987 and 2003 and concluded that homework does have a positive effect on student achievement.

Harris Cooper, a professor of psychology, said the research synthesis that he led showed the positive correlation was much stronger for secondary students --- those in grades 7 through 12 --- than those in elementary school.

READ MORE: Harris Cooper offers tips for teaching children in the next school year in this USA Today op-ed published Monday.

"With only rare exception, the relationship between the amount of homework students do and their achievement outcomes was found to be positive and statistically significant," the researchers report in a paper that appears in the spring 2006 edition of "Review of Educational Research."

Cooper is the lead author; Jorgianne Civey Robinson, a Ph.D. student in psychology, and Erika Patall, a graduate student in psychology, are co-authors. The research was supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

While it's clear that homework is a critical part of the learning process, Cooper said the analysis also showed that too much homework can be counter-productive for students at all levels.

"Even for high school students, overloading them with homework is not associated with higher grades," Cooper said.

Cooper said the research is consistent with the "10-minute rule" suggesting the optimum amount of homework that teachers ought to assign. The "10-minute rule," Cooper said, is a commonly accepted practice in which teachers add 10 minutes of homework as students progress one grade. In other words, a fourth-grader would be assigned 40 minutes of homework a night, while a high school senior would be assigned about two hours. For upper high school students, after about two hours' worth, more homework was not associated with higher achievement.

The authors suggest a number of reasons why older students benefit more from homework than younger students. First, the authors note, younger children are less able than older children to tune out distractions in their environment. Younger children also have less effective study habits.

But the reason also could have to do with why elementary teachers assign homework. Perhaps it is used more often to help young students develop better time management and study skills, not to immediately affect their achievement in particular subject areas.

"Kids burn out," Cooper said. "The bottom line really is all kids should be doing homework, but the amount and type should vary according to their developmental level and home circumstances. Homework for young students should be short, lead to success without much struggle, occasionally involve parents and, when possible, use out-of-school activities that kids enjoy, such as their sports teams or high-interest reading."

Cooper pointed out that there are limitations to current research on homework. For instance, little research has been done to assess whether a student's race, socioeconomic status or ability level affects the importance of homework in his or her achievement.

This is Cooper's second synthesis of homework research. His first was published in 1989 and covered nearly 120 studies in the 20 years before 1987. Cooper's recent paper reconfirms many of the findings from the earlier study.

Cooper is the author of "The Battle over Homework: Common Ground for Administrators, Teachers, and Parents" (Corwin Press, 2001).

The psychological benefits of finishing your homework on time

H omework has long been a staple of the educational experience, often viewed as a tool for reinforcing learning and assessing student understanding. Despite its educational importance, many students struggle with timely completion, facing obstacles such as procrastination, distraction, and a lack of motivation. These challenges can make homework seem like a daunting task. However, the benefits of completing homework on time extend beyond academic achievement. This article aims to explore the psychological benefits associated with timely homework completion, revealing how this practice can enhance mental well-being and foster personal growth.

Enhanced time management skills

One of the key psychological benefits of completing homework on time is the development of robust time management skills. When students regularly meet homework deadlines, they learn to prioritize tasks and manage their time more effectively. This skill is crucial not only in academic settings but also in personal and professional life. Mastering time management can lead to a sense of control over one’s life, which significantly reduces feelings of stress and overwhelm. It’s common to hear students ask, “ Can you write my paper for me ?” as deadlines approach. However, those who have honed their time management skills are more likely to tackle assignments independently and with confidence, knowing they have planned adequately to meet their obligations.

Reduced stress and anxiety

The act of finishing homework on time can significantly alleviate stress and anxiety. Procrastination often leads to a buildup of tasks, which can become overwhelming as deadlines draw near. This not only increases anxiety but also triggers a cycle of stress and poor performance. By completing assignments on time, students can avoid the panic associated with last-minute rushes. The psychological relief that comes from knowing that all tasks are completed and nothing is hanging over one’s head is profound. Regularly experiencing this relief helps students maintain a calmer, more composed mindset, which is conducive to both academic success and general well-being.

Improved self-esteem

Timely completion of homework also plays a critical role in enhancing self-esteem. When students finish their work on time, they receive positive feedback and grades, which reinforces their self-image and confidence in their abilities. This process is vital for building self-efficacy, the belief in one’s capability to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments. Achieving daily homework goals provides a continuous stream of small successes, each boosting the student’s self-esteem. Over time, this pattern fosters a more positive self-concept and encourages students to embrace more significant challenges, knowing they have the skills and discipline to succeed.

Better sleep patterns

Regular completion of homework by set deadlines can also lead to improved sleep patterns. When students avoid cramming their studies into late-night hours, they can maintain a healthier sleep schedule. This is crucial because adequate sleep is essential for brain function, emotional regulation, and overall mental health. A consistent sleep pattern prevents sleep deprivation’s cognitive impairments, such as reduced attention, slower processing, and memory issues. Students who manage their homework efficiently tend to go to bed at a reasonable hour, leading to better psychological and physical health outcomes.

Increased academic performance

There is a direct correlation between timely homework completion and academic performance. Students who consistently complete their homework on time often achieve higher grades and gain a deeper understanding of the material. This practice allows for regular study and revision, which enhances learning retention and prepares students for complex topics and exams. Psychologically, the regular accomplishment of set tasks, like homework, enhances mental agility and academic stamina, which is essential for long-term educational success.

Long-term academic and career benefits

Developing good habits in homework completion can yield significant long-term benefits in both academic and professional contexts. Academically, students who are diligent and consistent with their homework are more likely to pursue higher education and succeed in their chosen fields. Professionally, these habits translate into traits valued in the workplace, such as reliability, punctuality, and thoroughness. The psychological advantage of being perceived as dependable and hardworking cannot be overstated, as it opens doors to opportunities and fosters professional growth and stability.

The psychological benefits of completing homework on time are profound and multifaceted. From enhanced time management and reduced stress to improved self-esteem and better sleep patterns, the advantages extend well beyond the classroom. As students cultivate these habits, they not only boost their academic performance but also prepare themselves for future challenges in their academic and professional lives. It’s important for students to recognize these benefits and seek resources that reinforce good study habits, whether through educational tools, supportive peer groups, or essay writing service reviews when necessary. Ultimately, developing the discipline to complete homework on time is an investment in one’s mental health and future success.

School bus driver on a mission to spread positivity to students

Students are greeted with encouraging quotes on Anthony Burgess' bus.

A school bus driver in Florida is on a mission to spread positivity to elementary, middle and high school students on his route.

Anthony Burgess has been shuttling students for Pinellas County Schools since September 2023. He told "Good Morning America" he came up with the idea this spring to have students write down their favorite quotes and messages of encouragement to decorate the interior of his school bus.

"I wanted to make it brighter and make it a fun space, so I was like, 'Hey, let's make some quotes,'" Burgess said. "I wanted the bus to be more of a positive place for the children and for myself."

Over the past two months, Burgess' bus has been transformed into a colorful refuge, filled with supportive notes and drawings from students that line the length of the bus's interior and roof, and greet passengers by the door.

Burgess said he had one condition for the kids and their quotes. "Most important is I want it to inspire you. I want it to be something that makes sense to you … just as long as it means something to you, and I want you to talk about it and tell me what it means to you," he explained.

Among the standout quotes are statements like "Your mindset can change everything," "Prove them wrong," "Never give up," and "Never be limited by other people's limited 'Imaginations.'"

Some of the quotes are from legends like Mother Teresa and Walt Disney, who is attributed with the quote "If you can dream it, you can do it."

To Burgess' surprise, a few of the quotes the students chose to highlight are from the beloved school bus driver himself.

"The world is brighter because you're a part of it - Mr. Anthony," one handwritten note reads.

"What really got to me, actually … was when I told them to pick a quote from someone that inspires them. Several of them wrote, 'Stay awesome - Mr. Anthony.' They used me and I didn't even think that would even be a thing. But that was really, really, really nice," he recounted.

Another message that stood out to Burgess: "Don't let that monster named 'anxiety' control you!"

"I thought it was cool for a middle schooler to say, 'Hey, I struggle with anxiety.' And I was like, that's really awesome that you talked about that, and so it's OK to talk about how you were feeling," Burgess said.

When asked which quote he liked the most, the 37-year-old driver said they all were his favorites.

"They're all really kind of perfect," he said.

"I didn't realize how impactful it would be on these kids," he added. "And they love it. And it's really neat."

ChatGPT in Higher Education: Facts and Ideas to Consider

A laptop with ChatGPT on its screen

Introduction

It is safe to say that by now, you have seen many articles/posts, opinions, and stories about ChatGPT—and the larger AI-Language Learning Models (LLMs)—in relation to higher education and teaching/learning in particular. These writings included several perspectives ranging from raising concerns to celebrating new opportunities and a mix of the former and the latter. Also, these writings continue to evolve and grow rapidly in number as new AI-powered LLMs continue to emerge and evolve (e.g., Google’s new AI LLMs: Bard ).

The intent of this piece is not to add another article sharing tips or concerns about ChatGPT. That being said, this article (1) summarizes the major concerns about ChatGPT and (2) the ideas about its positive implications based on what it is published to date.

Concerns about ChatGPT

Faculty, scholars, and higher education leaders have raised several concerns about ChatGPT. These concerns stem from possible ways it can be used.

  • Using ChatGPT to cheat by asking it to write essays/answer open-ended questions in exams/discussion forums and homework assignments (December 19th, 2022 NPR Story ) (December 6th, 2022 Atlantic Story ) (January 16 New York Times Story ).
  • Using ChatGPT to author scholarly works which conflict with the ethical standards of scientific inquiry. Several high-impact/profile journals have already formulated principles to guide authors on how to use LLMs AI tools and why it is not allowed to credit such tool as an author—any attribution of authorship carries with it accountability for the scholarly work, and no AI tool can take such responsibility (January 24th, 2023 Nature Editorial ).
  • ChatGPT can threaten the privacy of students/faculty (and any other user). Its privacy policy states that data can be shared with third-party vendors, law enforcement, affiliates, and other users. Also, while one can delete their ChatGPT account, the prompts they entered into ChatGPT cannot be deleted. This setup threatens sensitive or controversial topics as this data cannot be removed (January 2023 Publication by Dr. Torrey Trust ).
  • ChatGPT is not always trustworthy, as it can fabricate quotes and references. In an experiment conducted by Dr. Daniel Hickey at Indiana University Bloomington, Instructional Systems Technology department, “ ChatGPT was able to write a marginally acceptable literature review paper, but fabricated some quotes and references. With more work such as including paper abstracts in the prompts, GPT is scarily good at referencing research literature, perhaps as well as a first-year graduate student.” (January 6th, 2023, Article by Dr. Daniel Hickey )

Excitement about ChatGPT

At the other end of the spectrum, there have been several ideas that express interest and excitement about ChatGPT in higher education. These ideas stem from how they can be used ethically and in a controlled manner.

  • Using ChatGPT to speed up the writing of drafts for several outlets (reports, abstracts, emails, conference proposals, press releases, recommendation letters, etc.) ChatGPT can produce elaborated writing that must be edited to remove any possible inconsistencies or inaccuracies (December 7th, 2022 Social Science Space story )
  • Using ChatGPT in the process of brainstorming ideas for curriculum design, lesson planning, and learning activities. The tool can provide some novel ideas or remind educators of some instructional techniques and strategies that they had heard about in the past (January 23rd, 2023, Article by Dr. David Wiley ).
  • Using ChatGPT to provide students tutoring/scaffolds. The tool can act like a virtual tutor who does not simply give the answer to the student but rather scaffold them to reach the correct answers by themselves. (Sal Khan, founder/CEO of Khan Academy, Spring 2023 TED Talk )
  • Teaching with ChatGPT to train students on using AI tools and models, provide opportunities to exercise critical thinking skills, and improve their technological literacy (January 12th New York Times story ).

Concluding Thoughts

There are major concerns about ChatGPT and the larger AI-powered Language Learning Models (LLMs) phenomenon. These concerns are legitimate and are opposed by notable ideas about the positive implications of AI-powered LLMs in higher education classrooms. As we aspire to make evidence-based educational and learning design decisions, one should carefully review the research that has been done on AI in relation to higher education up to this point and engage with the gaps as opportunities to expand knowledge and find new opportunities and risks.

Our University’s newly formed advisory committee on the applications of generative AI is a good example of how higher education institutions ought to recommend the use, evaluation, and development of emergent AI tools and services. Additionally, discussions about generative AI and its implications on education happening in public venues are necessary to strengthen the public-facing mission of the University, where input from educators, students, and members of the community is welcome.
