10 great PhD scholarships in the US for international students 2022

If you’re an international student looking for PhD scholarships, consider the US. With over 4,000 universities and six different time zones across 50 states, the US is one of the most popular study destinations in the world. Three main reasons why the US continues to attract PhD students despite their geographical location (usually taking up to two days to arrive from elsewhere) and high living costs as befits a developed nation, are outlined below.

Firstly, the US is home to many world-class universities with robust global  rankings – some of them are even in the top 100 world universities. Even though ranking is not an all-important reason to choose a university to do a PhD, it makes sense to study in one of the world’s best-ranked universities, and where else but to choose the US.

Secondly, the US PhD takes a longer time than PhDs in other countries. This is not necessarily a bad thing because when the US PhD takes up to five years or longer to complete, you will have more time to adjust, settle in and eventually thrive in your studies.

Finally, students doing their PhDs in the US are almost guaranteed to have a tuition fee waiver. They will get a stipend from the university for the entire duration of their studies as well, which makes for an attractive incentive.

However, if you want to get this funded PhD in the US, especially in the top-ranked universities, it is always a good idea to apply as early as possible before their deadlines. If you miss the scholarship deadline, you can still apply and be accepted for the PhD.

Here is a list of US PhD scholarships and stipends that will help you achieve your dream of studying in the US.

1. Apply to Cardiff University by 30 November 2023 to study for your chosen PhD, ideally for an October 2024 start.

Please note: clinical programmes are not eligible for this scheme.

Please complete the standard online  Cardiff University PhD application form, noting the additional requirements listed below. We advise you to apply in advance of the deadline.

In addition to the standard application form, applicants should also:

  • Attach an academic CV . Further guidance on academic CVs can be found on the  Vitae website .
  • Ensure the personal statement (part of the university application form) provides a clear explanation of the research interest, preparation undertaken, and an understanding of the significance of the research. Further guidance can be found on the  Vitae website .
  • Select ‘No, I am not self-funding my research’ when prompted on the university application form.
  • When asked ‘Please give the name of funding you are applying for’, enter the  ‘Cardiff University China Scholarship Council’ .

2. Your school will shortlist applicants to nominate to the university panel. Schools will need to make their nominations by  10 January 2024. To be nominated, you must have an offer of study and meet the school selection criteria. By this date, you must have met any English Language conditions set out in your offer to study.

3. If you are awarded a tuition fee only scholarship by the university panel, you will be issued a tuition fee only scholarship letter. If you accept the offer, you then need to apply to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) via the Cardiff University partnership portal. This will open around March.

4. Cardiff University will send a list of those who have accepted the tuition-only scholarships to the CSC, who will match this with applications received via the partnership portal. The CSC panel will then award scholarships. The tuition fee only scholarship is only valid if you also receive the CSC scholarship.

If you have any queries about the China Scholarship Council fund, please get in touch with the Doctoral Academy using the contact details below.

Economic & Social Research Council Studentships

The KISS DTC has now been replaced with the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS-DTP), made up of KCL, Queen Mary University of London and Imperial College.

LISS-DTP will now award ESRC -funded postgraduate research studentships to support doctoral research and training in the social sciences across this partnership. These are available for three or four years full-time, either as a three year PhD (‘+3’) or as a one-year Masters followed by PhD (‘1+3’). Therefore, a masters degree is not a prerequisite for applying for a LISS-DTP studentship.

A range of training programmes are available based on an assessment of the applicant’s prior learning and training needs and each LISS-DTP Thematic Pathway has a variety of Masters programmes associated with it.

Please see the LISS DTP website for details on the Thematic Pathways for more information.

Part-time studentships are also possible at pro-rata rates.

ESRC Open Competition Studentships

The Open Competition enables students to propose their own research project for funding. The Open Competition opens each November with an application deadline at the end of January. Applicants are notified in April about whether or not they have been awarded a studentship commencing in October.

Studentships are offered as either +3 (PhD only) or 1+3 (Masters and PhD). You will need to identify a supervisor who will write a supporting statement for your application.

Visit our studentships page or our dedicated LISS-DTP website for more information.

Please send general enquiries to: [email protected]

ESRC CASE Competition Collaborative Studentships

LISS DTP’s CASE Collaborative studentship competitions promote partnerships between social scientists at King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London and Imperial College and end-user organisations (public or private or third sector ‘partner institutions’).

A collaborative studentship (referred to as a CASE studentship) is one in which the student enhances their training by working closely with the non-academic partner in the development of their research project. They are a great way to initiate longer-term partnerships and to ensure the ‘impact’ of doctoral research.

It is important to note that the academic faculty initially apply for collaborative studentships, as potential supervisors. If successful they may award the studentship either to a named student or through an agreed recruitment process.

The studentship can involve any public or private or third sector partner institution. The involvement of the partner institution should add value to the studentship (e.g. distinctive opportunities for analysis, dissemination, research management, networking and/or knowledge transfer). The PhD project should also enhance the partner institution’s activities by offering the potential for societal or economic impact.

For more information, please visit the studentships page on the LISS-DTP website .

  • If you have already commenced doctoral study, you may apply for funding for the remainder of your study, providing that, at the start of the AHRC award (1st October 2022), you will have at least 50% of the period of study remaining (excluding the ‘writing-up period’).

Funding is available for both full-time and part-time students. Awards cannot normally be deferred. Successful candidates will be assumed to be starting their studies in October 2022 unless there are exceptional circumstances approved by LAHP and your Research institution.

DAAD Scholarships - An Overview

in the lobby

Would you like to study, carry out research or learn German in Germany and are you looking for funding? Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports well over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe – making it the world's largest funding organisation of its kind. Learn more about our scholarship options.

DAAD scholarships are aimed primarily at graduates, doctoral students and postdocs and are awarded for study and research visits to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. In some programmes, internships are also funded.

DAAD awards Research Grants – One-Year Grants for Doctoral Candidates for PhD students from almost all countries of origin. A grant for a full doctoral programme in Germany is offered primarily to applicants from developing and threshold countries (based on the OECD-DAC list ).

Scholarships for a Master's degree in Germany are available, in particular, for persons from industrial countries.

Students and doctoral candidates who are at risk of being denied educational or other rights in their country of origin have the chance to apply for a scholarship from the Hilde Domin Programme . Potential candidates cannot themselves apply for participation in the scholarship programme but are nominated by an institution or organisation that is a legal entity domiciled in Germany. Thereafter, suitable candidates will be contacted by the DAAD and invited to apply via the DAAD application portal.

Also available are so-called " Sur-place and Third Country Programmes " in which students and young scientists and researchers are offered DAAD funding for a graduate programme, doctoral programme or postdoc period in their home country or region.

If you wish to apply for a DAAD scholarship, please read the call for applications for your chosen scholarship programme in the scholarship database , paying particular attention to application deadlines. The scholarship database will take you to the application portal. Scholarship applications are reviewed by independent and voluntary selection committees, which also decide on the allocation of scholarships. Selection is based on subject-related criteria.

DAAD scholarships do not have to be paid back. They usually consist of a monthly scholarship payment (currently, for example,  € 934 for graduates and € 1,200 for doctoral/PhD students) and a flat-rate travel allowance. In many cases, DAAD also provides you with health, accident and personal liability insurance . Depending on scholarship programme, here are also additional benefits such as a one-off research allowance, family benefits or funds for language courses. The benefits offered by the respective scholarship programme are described in the call for applications in the scholarship database .

Studentships and doctoral training

Get a studentship to fund your doctorate.

UKRI studentships offer funding for doctoral research. They also offer you access to training, networking and development opportunities to help you build a research and innovation career.

Our expectations for research organisations, supervisors and students are set out in the statement of expectations for doctoral training .

You could get:

  • a minimum stipend of £19,237 per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments
  • support for your tuition fees (minimum £4,786 per year)

The stipend is usually non-taxable and does not need to be paid back. Some research organisations may offer more if you study in London, or they or one of their collaborators might decide to top up the payment. This will be outlined in the studentship advert from the research organisation.

We normally pay the support for tuition fees directly to your research organisation.

The levels given here are for the academic year 2024 to 2025. UKRI’s approach to doctoral stipend and fee levels will be reviewed through the  new deal for postgraduate research .

Additional support for your doctoral studies

As a UKRI-funded doctoral student, you may be able to access additional funding to cover the cost of other related training and development opportunities.

This could include:

  • conference attendance
  • language training
  • overseas research visits
  • internships or placements with a non-academic partner

The availability of support will depend on the research organisation and the training grants they have on offer. You should contact the research organisation you are interested in applying to, to find out what you could get.

Extra support if you have a disability

If you have a disability, you may be entitled to a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) on top of your studentship.

You should speak to your research organisation’s disability advisor to assess your needs. They can help put the right support in place, including a DSA application if necessary. You cannot claim DSA directly from UKRI.

DSA helps to cover the cost of any additional support that a person studying for a doctorate might need as a result of a disability, mental health problem or specific learning difficulty.

The allowance covers:

  • non-medical personal assistance
  • specialist equipment
  • extra travel costs
  • general expenses

Find out more about DSA in our framework .

If you are a research organisation you can download claim forms and guidance for DSA .

Who can apply

Any prospective doctoral student wishing to study at a UK research organisation, including prospective international students, can apply for a UKRI studentship.

All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for the full award, both the stipend to support living costs, and home-level fees at the UK research organisation rate.

How to find opportunities

Many UK research organisations offer some form of studentship funding from UKRI. These opportunities will depend on the subject you want to study and will normally be advertised by the research organisations.

Research organisations may have additional opportunities that do not involve UKRI. UKRI supports around 20% of all UK-based postgraduate researchers. You should speak to the research organisation you are interested in to find out what studentships are available.

You could also consider using a specialist website like   FindaPhD  to look for opportunities.

When to apply

Research organisations set their own deadlines for applications.

Many open for applications early in the academic year and close in January or February. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is important that you check the deadlines for the research organisation where you want to study.

How to apply

You cannot apply to UKRI for a studentship. You must contact the research organisation you are interested in studying with and use their application process.

For doctoral students who are already studying with a studentship, there are opportunities to get additional funding to support placements that are separate from your doctorate.  Find training and development opportunities .

  • Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about scholarships

A scholarship is a financial award granted to students to help with the cost of studying at university. Scholarships can vary in amount and can usually be used to pay for tuition fees, living costs, travel costs and academic materials among other things.

Scholarships can be awarded based on various criteria such as academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, research areas, leadership potential or financial need.

Scholarships are open to all students including domestic, European Union and international students and can be used for all levels of university study including undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees, research programmes, doctoral programmes and PhD programmes.

Where can you find scholarships for international students?

1. University scholarships: These are given by the university based on good grades, extracurricular activities or financial need. Universities will set their own criteria for applying to scholarships, and each university has its own list of scholarships it provides.

2. Academic or merit-based scholarships: These are for students who achieve high grades in school, either in a particular subject or in final exams and have a good academic record or GPA .

3. Performance-based scholarships: These are for students who are exceptional in areas such as sports, arts or music and are looking to pursue that at university.

4. External scholarships: These come from organisations outside universities, such as businesses, charities or higher education associations. Applications to them are usually separate from any university application forms.

5. Government scholarships: Most governments will have their own range of scholarships that will fund tuition fees and travel expenses (such as airfare) for international students wishing to apply to study in their country. Many will also be targeted at students from specific countries or regions.

6. Country/region-based scholarships: These can come from a range of sources including universities themselves, government departments, businesses or charities and will be aimed at students from a particular country or region.

What types of scholarships available for international students?

1. Partially funded scholarships: Unlike a full scholarship, these will cover only some of a student’s expenses. Therefore, students may need to find other ways to pay for the rest of their university expenses such as personal savings, help from families, part-time jobs or other scholarships. Some may offer funding for only one or two years of study.

2. Fully funded scholarships: These cover all expenses, including full tuition fees, accommodation and living costs throughout the university degree course.

3. Research grants: Research grants are financial awards given to university students so they can do in-depth studies and learn more about specific topics in their courses. These are offered globally and can be provided by institutions, government bodies or private organisations.

4. Work-study programmes: Some universities offer programmes in which students can work and gain experience while earning money for their studies.

5. Undergraduate scholarships: These are awarded to students pursuing an undergraduate degree.

6. Postgraduate scholarships: These are awarded for students pursuing postgraduate degrees, doctoral programmes and PhD programmes.

How to get a university scholarship

Obtaining a scholarship as an international student can be competitive. Here are some tips to help your application stand out.

1. Begin by researching all the different types of scholarships available, including those from governments, universities, companies and charities for the study abroad country of your choice. Contact universities to find out what they have available, and ask teachers or counsellors at your school if they know of any.

2. Ensure that you meet the criteria for each scholarship, including academic grades, country/region of residence, and thresholds for funding requirements.

3. Try your best to maintain your academic grades, as you will often have to list these as part of your application.

4. Partake in extracurricular activities or activities that are related to your degree, which can help to boost your application.

5. Connect with current university students , alumni , school counsellors or university admissions officers for insights and guidance on applying for a scholarship.

6. Ensure that you have all the correct supporting documents, such as university acceptance letters, proof of financial need, English language test results and academic transcripts.

7. Write a compelling personal statement outlining your achievements, extracurricular activities, academic goals and how the scholarship will help you to develop these skills while at university.

8. Secure recommendation letters from teachers or professionals aligning with the scholarship requirements.

9. Proofread your application as many times as you can and, if possible, find someone else to review it.

10. Submit applications well before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues.

11. You can apply to multiple scholarships at a time, so keep a list of all deadlines and requirements for each application so you can stay on top of them. Remember, each scholarship is unique, so adapt these tips to fit the specific requirements of the opportunities you pursue.

Frequently asked questions about scholarships.

When attending open days or speaking to university admissions officers, consider asking about the available scholarships, eligibility criteria, application processes, scholarship details, duration and renewal, competition, alternative financial aids, student support services, networking opportunities, and cultural and visa aid. Be sure to adapt these questions to the specific university or institution you’re interested in for valuable insights into the available scholarships.

1. How do scholarships work?

Scholarships are financial awards given to students based on a range of criteria including academic merit, research proposals, nationality and financial need. These funds aim to support students to pursue their education by covering a portion or the entirety of tuition fees, living expenses or other educational costs.

2. How to apply for scholarships?

To apply for scholarships, students need first to find the right scholarship for their studies. They then need to complete the application forms and submit the required documents, which may include academic transcripts, letters of recommendation and personal statements. Each scholarship has its own application process, and it’s important to carefully follow instructions and meet deadlines.

3. Where can I find scholarships?

We can help you get a scholarship as an international student through many of our guides and “scholarship of the month” spotlights. Online scholarship databases, university websites and government scholarship portals are also valuable resources for discovering available opportunities.

4. What do scholarships cover?

Scholarships can cover a range of university-related expenses, including tuition fees, accommodation, books, airfare or travel expenses, and living costs. The specific coverage will depend on the scholarship provider.

5. Do scholarships cover all expenses?

While some scholarships may cover all expenses, others may only partially cover certain aspects of your time at university. It’s crucial for students to carefully review the terms and conditions of each scholarship to understand the extent of financial support offered.

6. What are the eligibility requirements for scholarships?

Eligibility requirements for scholarships are different for each award and can include academic achievements, leadership qualities, nationality, financial need, extracurricular activities and more. Read the criteria outlined by each scholarship provider to determine what you need to provide to demonstrate your eligibility.

7. How can I find eligibility criteria for scholarships?

Eligibility criteria for scholarships are usually detailed in the scholarship guidelines or terms and conditions provided by the awarding institution or organisation. Students can find this information on the official websites of universities, government agencies or scholarship databases.

For our “scholarship of the month” features, we provide details on the highlighted award and what a candidate will need to demonstrate eligibility. You can also subscribe to our student newsletter to find out about new opportunities as they arise.

8. What is the easiest scholarship to get for international students?

Figuring out the “easiest” scholarship can be subjective as eligibility criteria and competition vary. However, some scholarships may have more accessible requirements. It’s advisable for students to explore opportunities offered by universities, governments and organisations with criteria aligning closely with their academic and personal achievements.

9. Are there government scholarships for international students?

Each government will have their own scholarship schemes for international students. Below are just a few of them.

In the UK, the Chevening Scholarships and Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan support individuals to study in the UK.

In the US, the Fulbright Program and Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program offer opportunities for international students to study, conduct research or teach.

Canada offers the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and ICCS Scholarships for doctoral students and those interested in Canadian studies.

Meanwhile, Australia Awards and Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships in Australia facilitate study, research and professional development for international scholars.

10. Do scholarships consider where you were born or your nationality?

Yes – some scholarships will be specifically offered for students from a certain country or region. Examples include scholarships for Chinese , Indian , African , Japanese , South Korean , Indonesian and Malaysian students, as well as students from Hong Kong . But there are many other scholarships that provide funding for students living in countries outside of these listed above.

11. How can international students get ready for scholarship applications?

Preparation for scholarship applications can begin long before completing the application itself. Research where you want to study and then look at government and university scholarships in your chosen destination. Make sure that you keep your grades up and take part in extracurricular activities as these can all help to boost your application. Ensure that you then collect all your supporting documents in plenty of time and that you’ve taken all relevant tests and exams.

12. What are needs-based scholarships?

Needs-based scholarships are there to help students who may not have the financial means to fund their education. These will be based on things such as such as family income, assets and how many people are in the household.

To apply, students usually need to show documents such as income tax returns, parental wages and proof of assets to demonstrate their financial situation.

13. What documents are needed for scholarship applications?

Although every scholarship application is different and can require specific documentation, most ask for an accurately completed application form, academic transcripts or records demonstrating scholastic performance, letters of recommendation from teachers or employers, a compelling personal statement or essay, and a comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé detailing your educational background and extracurricular activities.

There may also be other documents required, so be sure to read the application requirements carefully.

14. Is there support for international students during the application process?

Yes, international students can often access support during the scholarship application process through their university international office. These offices provide guidance on application requirements, procedures, and may offer assistance in navigating the application process. It is best to contact them directly as you start your application for specialised help.

Students can also speak to their teachers or high school counsellors for help with their applications.

15. Are there any extra benefits when you are awarded a scholarship?

In addition to financial support for tuition, accommodation and living expenses, many scholarships offer added benefits. These may include mentorship programmes, networking opportunities or exclusive events to enhance your overall academic and personal development.

16. How long do scholarships last, and can I renew a scholarship? What are the conditions for renewal?

The duration of scholarships varies, and applicants should carefully review the terms and conditions of each award. Some scholarships cover the entire duration of your academic programme, while others may be renewable each year. The conditions for renewal often depend on maintaining a certain level of academic performance or meeting specific criteria outlined by the scholarship provider.

17. How competitive are scholarships?

Some scholarships can be very competitive depending on the popularity of the programme and the number of applicants. Usually, prestigious scholarships have a higher level of competition, while others with specific eligibility criteria may be more accessible. It’s best for students to research each scholarship and tailor their applications to align with the specific criteria to give themselves the best chance of submitting a successful application.

18. What services are available for international students on scholarships?

International students on scholarship programmes can access various support services provided by universities. These may include academic advising, career counselling and assistance with visa and immigration matters. Additionally, universities often offer orientation programmes and workshops to help scholarship recipients navigate the academic and cultural aspects of their studies.

19. Is there a specific office or adviser for international scholarship-related questions?

Yes, many universities have dedicated offices or advisers to assist international students with scholarship-related questions. These offices can provide information about available scholarships, application processes and offer guidance on eligibility criteria.

20. Can I connect with alumni who have received similar scholarships?

Yes, connecting with alumni who have received similar scholarships can provide valuable insights and advice. Universities often have alumni networks or associations that can help you make these connections. Alumni can share their experiences, offer tips on the application process, and provide guidance on making the most of the scholarship opportunity.

21. How to write a great scholarship application essay?

Writing a scholarship essay involves clearly expressing your goals, achievements and the reasons you deserve the scholarship. Begin by carefully reading the essay prompt and ensuring that your response addresses all aspects. Craft a compelling narrative, focus on your unique qualities and experiences, and illustrate how the scholarship aligns with your academic and career aspirations.

22. How to prepare for scholarship interviews?

Preparing for scholarship interviews involves researching the scholarship provider, understanding the goals of the scholarship, and anticipating common interview questions. Practise explaining your achievements, goals and reasons for applying. Dress professionally, demonstrate enthusiasm, and be ready to discuss your academic and extracurricular experiences in a concise and compelling manner.

23. What are the deadlines for scholarship applications?

Programmes have different deadlines, so make sure you take note of every due date on your chosen scholarship applications. Carefully review the application guidelines provided by each scholarship and plan accordingly because many scholarships do not accept late applications.

24. Are there scholarships for community college students?

Yes, there are scholarships available for community college students. While some scholarships may be specific to four-year institutions, many organisations, foundations and institutions offer scholarships that are inclusive of community college students. It’s essential for students to explore both local and national scholarship opportunities and check with their academic advisers or financial aid offices for guidance on available options. Additionally, some scholarships may be tailored specifically to the field of study or academic achievements of community college students.

25. Are there scholarships open to high school students?

Yes, high school students can start their scholarship search early, allowing them to have awards ready for their first year of university. You will often need to know which country or university you have been accepted to, so read the application criteria for each scholarship and get everything ready before you start applying.

Improving your scholarship chances: A few tips

Before we get into the scholarships themselves, we’ll go over a few best practices when it comes to scholarship applications. Ideally, these will make your application process as smooth as possible and increase your chances of winning some! Thus, without further ado, here they are:

1. Create a spreadsheet

More likely than not, you’re planning on applying to more than one scholarship. Whether it’s just a few, dozens, or far more, doing so is a good idea. Putting your “eggs” (i.e. applications) in multiple baskets will improve your chances of winning one (or hopefully, more than one!). However, applying to so many scholarships can sometimes make it hard to keep up with your requirements and deadlines for all of them. After choosing or finding a preferred spreadsheet program, use it to keep track of the following info for each scholarship you’re interested in:

  • The name of the scholarship
  • The provider/organization
  • The application URL/link
  • The deadline
  • The account you’ve created to apply to the scholarship
  • Eligibility criteria (e.g. GPA, age, standardized test scores, etc.)
  • Important contact information (for yourself or the organization)
  • Enclosed documentation (e.g. essays, recommendation letters)

Keeping track of all this in one document will make any necessary information easily accessible. Further, storing all important documents (like essays, recommendation letters, or résumés) in one folder will be useful when it comes time to attach them to applications.

2. Demonstrate strong writing skills

Strong writing skills can also enhance your scholarship applications. For one, “good” writing shows scholarship committees that you’re ready for college- or graduate-level coursework. Perhaps more importantly, though, persuasive writing will make it easier for you to communicate why you, of all the applicants, are a fit for a scholarship.

On that note, if you need some help with any of the writing components of your essay, be sure to check out these helpful resources:

  • How to write an essay about yourself
  • Writing a scholarship cover letter: All you need to know
  • How to write a scholarship resume

3. Obtain high standardized test scores (SAT/ACT, TOEFL, GRE, etc.)

Before we get into this, we should make something clear: not all scholarships directed toward international students require standardized test scores. However, it is not uncommon for fully-funded scholarships to expect applicants to have relatively high scores on English Proficiency exams (like the TOEFL or IELTS ).

Additional scores may be required depending on your level of schooling and the specific scholarship. Prospective undergraduates may be expected to submit their SAT/ACT scores. GRE results may be expected of graduate students. Across the board, though, stellar grades and recommendations will likely be required of all applicants.

On that note, let’s get into references! Why are they important, and why do you need them?

4. Gather references

Simply, references are people whose names and contact information you give to an organization. These are typically given when applying to jobs, but can also be used for other applications – like those for scholarships! What exactly are references used for, though?

Great question! Organizations use references to hear firsthand about their applicants’ work ethic, positive traits, and other capabilities. Thus, if any of your scholarships require a list of references, it’s best to write down former teachers, professors, or employers who you’ve had positive experiences with. Relatives and friends, on the other hand, should not be listed as references as they may be considered biased sources.

Before listing anyone as a reference, we would also recommend letting them know beforehand. This way, you can (1) make sure they’re comfortable with it and (2) ensure that they’ll be ready if they get a call to speak on your behalf.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Last, but certainly not least, don’t be afraid to ask for help! If you need help completing any parts of your applications, reach out to the contacts listed on each of your scholarship applications. They should be able to answer any of your questions and guide you in the right direction.

Just like there are plenty of ways that one can improve their chances of winning a scholarship, there are also plenty of things that may hurt one’s chances. Here are a few things you should avoid doing when it comes to applying to scholarships:

1. Not writing your own essay

Although you may sometimes feel inspired by essays you see on the internet, or even your own past submitted essays, it’s always best to come up with completely original material when submitting an essay for an application.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, scholarship committees are very familiar with the range of what students typically write in scholarship essays. Thus, they will likely be able to tell whether an essay truly depicts your potential and abilities, or not.

It is thus best to completely write your essay yourself, inspired by the thoughts from your own mind and the passions of your heart. Afterwards, however, we would definitely recommend having a trusted person (ideally a grammar-whiz) review and proofread your essay for any mistakes. Don’t forget to spellcheck!

2. Waiting until the last minute to apply

This may very well seem a little obvious to many readers, but we would highly recommend against waiting until the last minute to apply for scholarships. Doing so may make you rush your applications and result in you submitting sub-par essays and other materials. Thus, we would recommend starting the application a few months before the deadline. This way, you’ll have plenty of time to (1) write beautiful essays, (2) collect and submit all necessary materials, and (3) gather necessary references.

3. Applying to few scholarships

No matter how confident you feel in any of your scholarship applications, it never hurts to apply to multiple (or many). In fact, one of the biggest mistakes students make when applying to scholarships is not applying to enough (trust me).

Your chances of winning a scholarship are never harmed by the fact that you applied to another. Thus, we would highly, highly recommend that students save themselves from the mistake of applying to just a few. Applying to more scholarships increases your chances of winning one, so make sure to do just that!

Frequently asked questions

Are international students eligible for federal student aid.

Unfortunately, most international or foreign students are not eligible for federal student aid. On the bright side, however, you may be eligible for institutional aid! To find out whether you are, we would recommend checking with your university’s financial aid office regarding eligibility requirements. Further, if financial aid is a very important factor in your college search, experts have recommended straying away from colleges that do not offer institutional aid to international students.

What is work study? Are international students eligible?

Simply, work study is a program allowing college students with demonstrated financial need to get part-time jobs (typically at their university) to help pay for college and other expenses. As one’s work-study status is generally determined by one’s federal student aid, international students who are not eligible for federal student aid will not be eligible for work study either. Don’t let this get you down, though! Institutional aid and private scholarships are a great alternative option to help pay for college costs.

Do I have to repay the financial aid award?

Great question! If you do happen to receive financial aid, whether you’ll be required to pay it back is largely dependent on what type of aid you received. While grants and scholarships do not need to be repaid, loans do. To find out the specific differences between scholarships, grants, and student loans, we would highly recommend checking out “ Differences between scholarships and student loans .”

More About the Fulbright Program

" In 1945, Senator J. William Fulbright  introduced a bill in the United States Congress that called for the use of surplus war property to fund the 'promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science.' On August 1, 1946, President Harry S. Truman signed the bill into law, and Congress created the Fulbright Program, the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government.

From its inception, the Fulbright Program has fostered bilateral relationships in which citizens and governments of other countries work with the U.S. to set joint priorities and shape the program to meet shared needs. The world has been transformed in ensuing decades, but the fundamental principle of international partnership remains at the core of the Fulbright mission."

List of US Universities Accepting 2.2 & HND from International Students (with Proof)

The thing is, USA graduate scholarship is a very popular option for international students. As in, tens of thousands apply to only a handful of scholarships every year. So it follows that your chances of competing and winning a full scholarship to study in the USA are very slim, even more so if you have plans to work while/after schooling.

So then, why restrict your options applying only for scholarships when universities, polytechnics & colleges offer international students “graduate assistantships”? What’s a Graduate Assistantship, you ask?

It will be easier to simply list out top USA Graduate Assistantship opportunities to plan or apply for but you see, while you might know something and then think it is general knowledge, plenty of learners do not know what you know. Infact, the lack of information is so overwhelming that in my experience evaluating scholarship applications, many do not know what or why they have applied. Imagine walking into a room blindfolded?

Shocking, right?

So education begins from ground level up. In future articles, we will tackle how to apply successfully for a graduate assistantship, cold calling a professor, writing a great SOP etc (other strategies are listed in this interview ).

For this article though, we define Graduate assistantship and list some of them from the United States (US) that you may apply for.

What then is a Graduate Assistantship?

A Graduate Assistantship is walking the talk. A GA enables you get your education fully-funded in exchange for professional contribution to your major. So while your tuition is fully paid off, sometimes along with your housing and maintenance, it comes with working in your faculty. Like having a job while studying, only that for a GA, it usually entails academic/administrative work not bartending or housekeeping. GA advances your development more than a scholarship.

In the US of A, Graduate Assistantship is of 3 types:

  • A  Graduate Assistant (GA) : Although a Graduate Assistant works with and assists students on a daily basis. they are not required to teach the students. The GA primarily works in administrative capacity with a member of the faculty or the school coach, yet the work of the graduate assistant should not be to do filing and clerical duty. Keyword is “should not”. It’ll however depend on faculty’s pressing needs at the time
  • A  Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA): The GTA is required to teach undergraduate students and mentor them. In some cases, the GTA is assigned to masters and doctoral candidates in rare circumstances where exceptional expertise or experience is shown. The teaching assignment is an opportunity to obtain depth of knowledge within the academic discipline.
  • A  Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) : The GRA is employed to aid the research of a faculty member in a capacity that enhances the student’s career and educational development. For the GRA, the research project typically results in a professional paper, thesis, or dissertation. Duties vary depending on the type of research project and may include laboratory experiments, library searches, data entry, preparation of reports, and other relevant assignments.

All graduate assistantships are professional positions that allow you to build the skills that employers are looking for. For master’s students applying to doctoral programs, an assistantship demonstrates that you are well-prepared to contribute to the department. Indeed, for many research fields, not having an assistantship during your master’s could count against you when applying to PhD programs.

How to Apply for a Graduate Assistantship (GA)?

GAs are typically awarded by a specific Graduate Course or Department or College. So you would most likely not be aware of a call for applications if you do not contact the department or college.

You would most likely not be aware of a GA call for applications if you do not contact the department or college.

Let’s point you in the direction of 30 USA graduate schools that open their assistantships to African/international students

So what say you? Wanna apply to some GA positions? Let’s get cracking!
