Doctor of philosophy, program description.

The Graduate Department of Management offers a world-class doctoral program. Applicants may enter the PhD program via one of two routes: 1) following completion of an appropriate master’s degree or 2) direct entry following completion of a bachelor’s degree.

PhD Program

Minimum admission requirements.

Applicants are admitted under the General Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Applicants to all fields must also satisfy the Rotman School's additional admission requirements stated below.

Some depth in the cognate disciplines relevant to the field is required.

These requirements may be satisfied prior to entry to the PhD program through an MBA degree program coupled with a relevant undergraduate degree, or through an undergraduate degree in business, management, or commerce coupled with a discipline-based master's degree.

If the depth requirements are completed prior to entry to the PhD program, then the student is expected to complete the program in four years. If additional coursework is required, then the student may need an additional year to complete the program.

Applicants should provide:

transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended

a letter of intent for applying to the PhD program

an updated curriculum vitae (CV)

two reference letters

a valid GMAT or GRE score (optional)

proof of English-language proficiency, if applicable.

Program Requirements

Students are expected to be qualified in the three basic disciplines essential to the study of management: economics, behavioural science, and quantitative analysis/statistics.

Students in all fields normally complete coursework in one field and two areas of study during Years 1 and 2. In subsequent years of study, students concentrate on deepening knowledge through additional coursework and on generating unprecedented insights through research that culminates in a written doctoral thesis.

Coursework . Students must complete a minimum of 4.5 full-course equivalents (FCEs) to satisfy requirements for one field and two areas of study.

A minimum of 2.0 FCEs comprise the field. These will normally be taken from 3000-level Management courses, but additional courses from other departments may be required.

2.0 FCEs: courses in the two areas of study are usually taken in cognate departments. Each area of study comprises at least 1.0 FCE.

Upon completion of the courses, students are expected to pass comprehensive examinations in the field.

Successful completion of the required course RSM3080H Research Methods in Business (0.5 FCE).

A thesis embodying the results of original investigation must be submitted and defended at a Doctoral Final Oral Examination in accordance with the regulations of the School of Graduate Studies.

During all years of study, students must maintain residency , whereby students are on campus full-time and consequently in geographical proximity to be able to participate fully in the University activities associated with the program.

Program Length

Phd program (direct-entry).

Some depth in the cognate disciplines relevant to the field of study is required.

If the depth requirements are completed prior to entry to the PhD program, then the student is expected to complete the program in five years. If additional coursework is required, then the student may need an additional year to complete the program.

In exceptional cases, and at the discretion of the Rotman School, admission to the program by direct entry may be approved for applicants with an appropriate bachelor’s degree with high standing (a least an A- average in courses relevant to the discipline) from a recognized university.

Coursework . Students must complete a minimum of 6.5 full-course equivalents (FCEs) to satisfy requirements for one field and two areas of study. Direct-entry students must complete 2.0 of the 6.5 FCEs within Year 1.

A minimum of 2.0 FCEs in the field. These will normally be taken from 3000-level Management courses, but additional courses from other departments may be required.

2.0 FCE: courses in the two areas of study are usually taken in cognate departments. Each area of study comprises at least 1.0 FCE.

Once you’ve decided to apply for a postgraduate programme, starting the application process can often be the hardest part. If you’re planning to pursue your PhD in Canada, this guide will help you understand the application process and how to write a research proposal.

While this guide covers the main questions that students might have around applying for a PhD in Canada, it is important to check the requirements for your university and ask the admissions team if you have any questions about the process.

How do i apply to do a phd in canada as an international student.

Once you have decided to apply to a PhD programme in Canada, you can use degree databases to find which university offers PhDs in your area of interest, such as  Universities Canada or provincial bodies such as Education Planner BC . Search engines or other global commercial degree directories may also help you identify a suitable programme.

Alternatively, you could search for which faculty members conduct research in your area via publication databases and then look up the universities where they teach.

If you already know which university you are most interested in, you should look at both its departmental/programme web pages and the pages of a central graduate school if applicable.

Unlike at undergraduate level, where you can apply via a central application system, application to graduate programmes is usually targeted to each programme, which can vary across institutions.

What qualifications do I need to apply for a PhD ?

We recommend that applicants check the admissions requirements for their programme of interest.

In terms of qualities admission committees may be looking for, these will vary by subject area – for example graduate programmes in natural sciences may look for different attributes from those in the performing arts.

Graduate students in Canada are usually expected to work independently and be self-directed. As such, applicants may want to provide evidence of how they have taken initiative and shown self-direction and perseverance. Passion, curiosity, focus, commitment, collegiality and enthusiasm are all qualities that applicants may find mentioned on programme websites.

How do I look for a PhD supervisor?

The first step would be to check with your programme of interest to see if contact with a supervisor is encouraged or required. Processes vary and some programmes assign you supervisors based on interests identified in your application, some require commitment from a supervisor prior to the application, and some may determine supervisors after some initial coursework or rotations.

If a programme requires you to contact potential supervisors, begin by researching faculty members and their research topics. Most universities, including the University of British Columbia  (UBC), have a research supervisor database where prospective students can search faculty.

Candidates should read recent papers by potential supervisors and look for a good match between their own interests and those of the faculty member. Reading graduate student stories can also help, as applicants will be able to see current research projects students are working on, and get a sense of the faculty or programme they are looking into.

Once you have found a faculty member you would like to work with, you can reach out to them individually. Prospective students should be aware that academics often receive many such requests every week. Plan carefully who to contact and customise each message to the particular faculty member, explaining your research interests and why you are interested in working with them.

Everything you need to know about studying in Canada Everything international students need to know about student visas in Canada

How should I write my research proposal?

Your research proposal is a crucial part of your application. It gives a sense of how prepared you are to conduct research and what directions of research you’re likely to pursue. A specific proposal is more likely to impress than some general ideas.

Your research areas and interests may change once you have entered your programme, so you will not be held to the ideas you’ve proposed. However, it gives prospective supervisors a sense of how your research aligns with theirs and that of the department in general.

Be sure to stay within the word count requested, and of course it’s essential you avoid any spelling or grammatical errors. We always recommend that applicants write several iterations of their research proposal and gain feedback from friends, colleagues and, if possible, professors at each stage. When you approach previous professors for a letter of reference, it’s worth sharing your proposal to get their feedback on it.

When should I start applying?

Applicants need to meet the application deadlines, which are often a year or more in advance of the desired start date (eg apply in December to start the following September). On top of that it is important to allocate enough time to prepare and complete various steps to be able to submit a completed application in time.

International applicants will need to ensure there is enough time to take the required English language tests. Applicants should also check if they have to complete any other courses before applying and that they have enough time to collect the necessary documentation and proofread everything.

We recommend that prospective students review application timelines for their programme of interest and then plan backwards, ensuring they have time to complete all aspects of the application. All the steps may take longer than expected, so give yourself extra time to compile the strongest possible application.

How long will the application process take?

This will depend on each university, programme and sometimes supervisor. Once you have applied, the process will probably take a further two to three months at least. At UBC, many graduate programmes close applications in December and January, with offers being made February to April as a rough guideline. Depending on subject area, applications can close as late as April or May for a September start though.

What supporting documents do I need as an international student?

In general, required supporting documents won’t be too different from those for a domestic applicant, with the exception being proof of English language ability. Examples of supporting documents could be:

  • Transcripts of all post-secondary courses/degrees previously enrolled in
  • Reference letters
  • Statement of interest/research statement
  • English language test scores
  • Depending on programme, test scores or portfolio

Many institutions allow applicants to apply with scans of their transcripts initially. However, once applicants receive an admission offer they will usually have to submit official copies, which may include translations for international applicants.

International applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with other details, such as study permit procedures, work opportunities and health insurance. While not required for the application itself, these are important considerations for which to plan and budget if the application is successful.

Do I have to pay for my PhD application?

Most universities in Canada will charge an application fee. At UBC, the application fee for international applicants is CAD$168.25. UBC automatically waives these fees for applicants from countries identified among the world’s 50 least developed nations. Other universities in Canada may have similar measures in place, so be sure to check this.

Other than application fees, students should make a financial plan that incorporates tuition and living costs, as well as checking what financial aid you could be eligible for and which scholarships are available for international students.

What would be your top pieces of advice for an international student applying for a PhD?

Deciding to go to graduate school is a big decision and often a difficult one if you do not have a clear understanding of what it will be like. It is important to go to graduate school for the right reasons, including:

  • Being interested in a given field.
  • Desiring to be part of an intellectual or professional community.
  • Gaining qualifications for career progression.
  • Acquiring expertise to change sector or professional area.
  • Gaining experience and entry requirements for an academic career.

Also, it is important to think about where you would like to study. Location and lifestyle can make a significant difference. Think about how this will affect your life, and importantly, is it a place where you could live in the future?

Regarding being successful in the process, preparation is key. Most universities provide a lot of information on their websites about the process and how to prepare strong applications. Make use of these resources, take the time to read the advice and treat the application itself as an opportunity to show that you possess key qualities faculty members are looking for, such as paying attention to detail, and writing ability.

This country provides you with a plethora of research options to broaden and develop your knowledge. When pursuing higher education in Canada, students can pick between professional – Doctorate in Business Administration – and academic – Ph.D. in sciences.

Top PhD Universities in Canada

In this table you can find some of the best universities in Canada that offer PhD studies. The ranked universities are based on the QS World University Rankings.

*Tuition fee for international students

Reasons to Pursue PhD Degree in Canada

1. affordable tuition fees.

PhD study in Canada is often less expensive than in the neighbouring United States, with some colleges significantly lowering or perhaps even eliminating the international tuition. In Canada, the cost of pursuing a Ph.D. ranges from 3,500 to 18,000 CA$.

2. Possibilities for Post-Graduates

If you successfully complete your doctorate, you will be able to live and work in Canada for up to three years and maybe pursue a path to legal residency or even citizenship. During the academic year, Ph.D. students in Canada can work for almost 10 hours each week. This enables students to pay and sustain their daily costs while simultaneously allowing them to learn and get industrial experience. After completing the Ph.D., you may expect to earn somewhere between 70,000 to 150,000 CA$ per year or even higher. Not to forget that this can deeply depend on the position you take, the employment sector, as well as employment location.

3. Outstanding Canadian Universities

There are around 100 universities in Canada that offer PhD studies, and all of them are highly professional. Most of the world’s finest international institutions and colleges are based in Canada, where students from all over the globe have come to study alongside the biggest names in their profession. All Canadian institutions that provide PhD degrees guarantee cutting-edge research facilities and educators with the most academic expertise. All Canadian universities can be classified as public or private based on how they are funded.

Because of Canada’s huge geographical area and colonial past, the country has evolved a federal system comprising ten provinces and three territories. For international PhD candidates, the most significant distinction between Canadian provinces and territories is that only provinces have research universities. The region of Canada in which you decide to study may also influence whether your university offers degrees in English, French, or even both.

Rewarding Programs and Career Prospects

Overall, international students have profited greatly from courses in Natural Science and Mathematics, Social Sciences, Medicine and Health, Business and Management, and Computer Science and Technology. Doctoral students immediately find themselves working as biological technicians, industrial ecologists, environmental economics, farm and home management, and a variety of other related professions after successfully completing the first stated degree. Along with other courses from specialized fields of study, many PhD applicants from across the world consistently choose Canadian universities as the best fit.

Requirements for PhD in Canada

Before starting the application process for a Ph.D. one should be aware that the requirements  in Canada differ from institution to university and they may not be that generic. However, some characteristics apply to all Canadian colleges that offer Ph.D. programs to overseas students. For this reason we have concluded all the necessary steps that a prospective PhD candidate must follow.

1. Choose the PhD Type

In Canada, you can select between structured and open Ph.D. programs. Structured doctorate programs are not the same as conventional doctoral research. PhD students, on average, work steadily on achieving their research idea as part of a team and with extensive assistance from a group of academic professionals. On the other hand, The term “open PhD” refers to the fact that you will be responsible for proposing and outlining your own research project as well as completing it on your own.

Nonetheless, for either of the two programs you will need to have a supervisor who is willing to guide you through the research process. After you have found the supervisor, you will need to make sure if your university requires a letter of support from your supervisor along with your application.

2. Submit the GPA Score

Instead of merely submitting your final degree result, you will generally be requested to offer a Grade Point Average number. Grade Point Average (GPA) is a statistic that reflects how well or how high you achieved on average in your courses. It is intended to rate you during your studies on a GPA scale ranging from 1.0 to 4.0, and it indicates whether your total grades have been good or low. Canadian institutions may request transcripts of your Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, including information on specific modules and grades.

3. Submit Your Application Online

Apply online to the university of your choice, pay the application costs, and submit the needed papers. Some of the documentation required by institutions while applying for Ph.D. programs are as follows.

  • Statement of Purpose (1,000-1,500 word essay explaining why you are applying to the specific program and institute).
  • Academic Transcript
  • Certificate of Proficiency, either TOEFL or IELTS
  • Letters of Recommendation (up to three, one from your supervisor) .
  • CV or Resume
  • Writing Samples

4. Apply for a Study Permit

A study permit is mandatory for anyone who wishes to live and study in Canada during a course. After being accepted by the university, you must apply for a Canadian study permit. The Permit is valid for the term of your PhD, also an additional of 90 days to allow you time to plan your travel or apply for a post-study work visa. Normally, you should apply for a Study Permit in your native country before travelling to Canada. You can start the application process online, but you may need to take your passport and other documents to a Canadian embassy/consulate in your home country. You must have the following documents ready in order to obtain your study permit:

  • Proof of Funds
  • No criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • Valid travel document (passport)
  • Acceptance letter from a DLI
  • Medical Insurance
  • Proof of Language Proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS)

Program delivery

The Doctor of Social Sciences (DSocSci) program is offered through a blend of online learning and two three-week residencies on campus.

The program usually takes four years, although completion times vary.

The Doctor of Social Sciences program consists of these two parts:

  • Online courses and residencies — For the first half of the program, you'll be immersed in coursework with a group of students.
  • Candidacy exams and dissertation — During the second half of the program, you'll complete your candidacy exams and dissertation.

Online courses

You'll complete six online courses, including the Directed Study. Online courses consist of assigned readings, synchronous or asynchronous lectures, interactive discussions, and individual and team assignments.

You’re expected to meet deadlines and contribute meaningfully to your class. Your contributions are a big part of everyone’s learning.

You'll need to complete all of the courses in this program, before taking your candidacy exams.

This blended program has a two three-week residencies. Blended programs include online courses and on-campus residencies.

Residencies are intensive and immersive. Many students say this time together is the highlight of their program.

During your residency, you can expect to:

  • attend classes full time (e.g., Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • complete homework and individual and team assignments outside of class hours
  • take part in extracurricular activities

Directed Study

The Directed Study is essential to help you prepare for your candidacy exams. You'll design the Directed Study with your selected instructor or supervisor to explore current knowledge and practice in your area of study and research. You'll study topic areas, such as substantive research issues and methods development. This course is assessed as pass or fail.

Candidacy exams

Prior to starting your dissertation, you'll need to complete your candidacy exams.

Your exams need to reflect your advanced and complex understanding and analysis of theoretical, methodological and substantive issues related to your dissertation.

The examination process is as follows:

  • Written exam — You'll first provide a written submission to your supervisory committee.
  • Oral exam — Your supervisory committee, chaired by the program head, will conduct your oral examination based on your written submission.
  • Research proposal — After completion of your written and oral candidacy exams, you'll move to formal candidacy status. At this point, you'll submit your research proposal to the supervisory committee for approval.
  • Ethics clearance — After your proposal is approved, you'll request ethics clearance from the university. Once you receive this, you can begin work on your dissertation.

Dissertation

Your dissertation is your final project of the doctoral program. You'll be required to commit about 1,400 hours of effort for the dissertation to be awarded with 42 credits.

Results of your research must make a distinct interdisciplinary contribution to applied scholarship in the social sciences. In addition, your dissertation should demonstrate a high degree of originality, understanding and knowledge about your topic area.

You can demonstrate originality through a combination of the following:

  • development of a new critical analysis of a practical issue or challenge
  • development of a new theory from practice
  • novel application of existing theory to a practical challenge
  • discovery of a new professional approach to practice

You should write your dissertation to a standard expected for professional and academic communication. It should be evident that your dissertation can be the basis for a published book, monograph or series of articles, and a significant application in the field.

Publication

Unless the Vice-President Academic & Provost has granted an exemption, you'll need to submit your dissertation for publication in Royal Roads University's Digital Archive, ProQuest, and Library and Archives Canada to graduate.

If you complete your dissertation in a non-traditional format, you need to submit a written (minimum 2500-word) summary with it. This the only part that is archived.

Completion options

You can choose from the following two options to complete your dissertation:

  • Traditional monograph dissertation — This involves completing a 150- to 350-page (excluding bibliography) manuscript based on your research. With this option, your program ends with your defence of your dissertation. After you graduate, you may then use the research from the manuscript to develop journal articles, courses, policy papers, course curriculum  or other materials.
  • Dissertation by portfolio —   Through this option, you'll complete your research and have it approved by the supervisory committee. After this, you can develop three different products or materials while you're still in the program, rather than focusing your efforts on writing a traditional monograph.

Dissertation process

The dissertation process includes the following steps:

  • During your first year in the Doctor of Social Sciences, you’ll work with the program head to identify potential supervisors , who can best support your research. Unlike many conventional doctoral programs, your principal supervisor or advisors can be external to the university.
  • You can begin work on your dissertation once you have successfully completed the written and oral candidacy exams. At that point you're considered a doctoral candidate.
  • Your dissertation requires public defence and review by an external academic examiner. The external examiner should have an arms-length relationship with you and members of your supervisory committee.

Admission requirements for PhD programmes in Canada vary by institution and subject, but there are some general eligibility requirements. Prospective applicants must possess a Master’s degree in the same subject for admission to any doctoral programme. Besides this, the other general eligibility requirements for PhD in Canada are

It’s common to be asked for your Grade Point Average (GPA) when applying to a Canadian doctoral programme while submitting your academic transcripts. To get accepted into one of these programmes, applicants need at least a 3.0 GPA or higher. Students must also show that they have taken advanced courses in their field of study.

Graduate Admissions Tests

Universities and graduate schools use scores from the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) to assess potential students’ aptitude for higher learning. Requirements can change between universities, so be sure to do your research beforehand.

Language Requirements

Depending on your chosen province of study, a Canadian Doctoral degree can be attained in either English or French. While the majority of universities teach primarily in English, those located within Quebec for example may offer instruction exclusively in French.

If you are a native speaker or have already studied the language at the university level, that should be enough to meet the criteria. Otherwise, you must take and pass a language test before submitting your application as part of its requirements.

Work Experience

Having some experience in the field you are applying to can be beneficial, although it’s not always mandatory. Admissions committees may want to know that students have relevant work experience or volunteer activities in their chosen field prior to applying for a doctoral programme in Canada.

Research Statement

Applicants for PhDs are usually required to show a strong interest in research through their statement of purpose or a research proposal. This is an important part of the application process and should detail why you are applying for the programme, what you hope to gain from it, and your future goals. Having a good research statement can help strengthen your application.

Your resume should include the following information: academic achievements, work experience, extra-curricular activities, and awards. It’s important to provide an accurate and detailed description of your qualifications so that admissions committees can get a better idea of who you are and what you bring to the table.

Canadian universities may conduct a PhD interview as an assessment of your application and capability, or simply to become more acquainted with you. You must be prepared to answer questions about your chosen field and research, experience, interests and career aspirations. It is best to research potential topics of discussion before attending such an interview and practice as best you can.

Admission to a doctoral programme in Canada requires two or three academic references from previous professors or employers, who can be contacted for a reference only after you have received their permission. Ensure that your references are aware of their role in the application process so they can provide the most honest and accurate assessment of your abilities and knowledge.

Reaching Out to Potential Supervisors

Potential PhD students should research possible dissertation supervisors and acquaint themselves with the research areas of their prospective Schools prior to applying. This allows them to understand the type of research they would be expected to undertake and make an informed decision. Finally, make sure that you meet all the deadlines for your application and keep a track of all the documentation you are sending. This will help ensure that you submit a complete and accurate application package.

You represent and warrant that you have all rights to grant such license to us without infringement or violation of any third party rights, including without limitation, any privacy rights, publicity rights, copyrights, contract rights, or any other intellectual property or proprietary rights.

First party cookies are the cookies served by the owner of the domain. In our case, that's TC Global. Any cookie we place ourselves is a "first-party cookie."

Third-party cookies are cookies placed on our domains by trusted partners that we've allowed to do so. These can be social media partners, advertising partners, security providers, and more. And they can be either "session cookies" or "permanent cookies":

Session cookies only exist until you close your browser, ending what's called your "session." Then they're deleted.

Permanent cookies have a range of lifespans and stay on your device after the browser is closed. On the Site, we try to only serve permanent cookies (or allow permanent cookies to be served by third parties) that have a limited lifespan. However, for security reasons or in other exceptional circumstances, sometimes we may need to give a cookie a longer lifespan.

Web browser cookies may store info such as your IP address or other identifiers, your browser type, and info about the content you view and interact with on digital services. By storing this info, web browser cookies can remember your preferences and settings for online services and analyze how you use them.

Along with cookies, we also use tracking technologies that are very similar. Our Site may contain small transparent image files or lines of code that record how you interact with them. These include "web beacons," "scripts," "tracking URLs," or "software development kits" (known as SDKs):

Web beacons have a lot of different names. They might also be known as web bugs, tracking bugs, tags, web tags, page tags, tracking pixels, pixel tags, 1x1 GIFs, or clear GIFs. In short, these beacons are a tiny graphic image of just one pixel that can be delivered to your device as part of a web page request, in an app, an advertisement, or an HTML email message. They can be used to retrieve info from your device, such as your device type, operating system, IP address, and the time of your visit. They are also used to serve and read cookies in your browser or to trigger the placement of a cookie.

Scripts are small computer programs embedded within our web pages that give those pages a wide variety of extra functionality. Scripts make it possible for the website to function properly. For example, scripts power certain security features and enable basic interactive features on our website. Scripts can also be used for analytical or advertising purposes. For example, a script can collect info about how you use our website, such as which pages you visit or what you search for.

Tracking URLs are links with a unique identifier in them. These are used to track which website brought you to the Site. An example woold be if you clicked from a social media page, search engine, or one of our affiliate partners' websites.

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are part of our apps' source code. Unlike browser cookies, SDK data is stored in the app storage. They're used to analyze how the apps are being used or to send personalized push notifications. To do this, they record unique identifiers associated with your device, like your device ID, IP address, in-app activity, and network location.

Precision nutrition for dairy cattle: Can robots help?

And why is this question important to producers in Canada and beyond? For World Milk Day on June 1, we get answers from a University of Saskatchewan (USask) researcher.

Feeding livestock today is not a matter of flinging some hay or silage in a stall and hoping for the best.

It’s a carefully curated process to ensure the health of the animal, optimize production, and protect the environment.

Dairy cows present a unique feeding challenge. Increasingly, cows are milked by robots. But these robots are not simply milking machines; they also serve up what Sophia Cattleya Dondé describes as cow “dessert” — yummy nutrition-packed pellets.

“The robot is the full system,” explained Dondé, a PhD student in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources (AgBio) at USask. “It works 24/7. It’s a voluntary system, so cows go voluntarily to the robot whenever they want to be milked.

“The pellet is one of the attractions. You give them pellets in the robot to make cows want to go to the robot more frequently.”

But do the pellets actually influence milk production? Dondé decided to find out.

For cows milked in robot systems, the diet consists of the partial mixed ration (PMR), a high-quality forage-based component that cows consume in addition to the pellet. This means that pellet feeding might influence how much and when cows consume the PMR.

Specifically, Dondé researched whether pellet starch concentration, combined with the amount of pellet provided, affects the performance of lactating dairy cows and the nutrients they consume at all points of their production cycle.

Dondé noted that there is a gap in the literature on this subject, and it’s important to fill it.

“We saw that people usually focus only on pellets and they don’t realize that the feed in the bunk still has the majority of the nutrients for cows,” she said.

“Most studies don’t focus on PMR intake. They tend to focus on the amount of pellet located in the robot.”

But when the amount of pellet in the robot is increased, she said the cows’ PMR intake decreases. Here is where her human-to-cow dessert analogy comes in.

“You may not eat your full meal. Mmm, I’m not going to eat that much rice or vegetables ... because I really want that cake.

“You start to substitute your principal meal with dessert. It’s almost what cows do. They don’t eat everything out of the bunk that they’re supposed to eat. They eat the pellet, so they substitute.”

So, does starch content of the pellet influence milk production?

The first part of her project was conducted last year under the supervision of Dr. Greg Penner (PhD), Centennial Enhancement Chair in Ruminant Nutritional Physiology and professor in the College of AgBio.

In her study, Dondé used two concentrations of starch — 24 and 34 per cent — in the pellets. The lower starch concentration was based on the average used by Canadian dairy producers.

Dondé also varied the amount of pellet provided, giving some cows two kilograms a day and others six kilograms, regardless of their production levels.

The results?

“Starch concentration had little effect on performance.”

Not only that, but the cows generally did not consume all of their daily pellet allocations — with cows in the high-allocation treatment leaving an average of half a kilogram behind — while also not eating all of their PMR. Cows fed more pellet also ate less PMR and thereby altered nutrient supply.

This research showed that the pellet-feeding amount in the robot affects the ability to deliver a precision diet, while the pellet starch content had little effect. The next study will test whether protein influences cows’ responses.

That will be the second leg of the investigation, which will be performed at the Rayner Dairy Research and Teaching Facility on the USask campus. The facility has 110 cows, of which Dondé will use about a quarter.

“We wanted to look at just starch, carbohydrate, first. We want to understand what the perfect pellet for cows would be and how they react based on what they’re eating,” Dondé said.

“We can collect all pellet that cows don’t eat so we know exactly the amount of pellet that they ate for that milking visit, which is a unique feature in robotic milking research.”

Why is robotic milking important to producers...and cows?

Robotic milking has changed the lives of dairy farmers.

“Instead of having a fixed schedule of going there every morning and evening to milk a cow, it’s a machine that operates by itself,” Dondé said.

“Instead of the farmer having to be there for hours to milk the cows, they can manage their time differently.”

This does not make the farmer less busy, she said. It just leaves time for other important farm management tasks.

“A lot of producers were saying the robot allowed them to have more quality time. They had more time to spend with family and more time to actually prepare themselves for the growing season or to make silage.”

As for the cows, some studies have shown the robot can improve their health — reducing the frequency of mastitis, for example.

Dondé’s ultimate goal is to support robotic milking by figuring out how to deliver the exact amount and profile of nutrients dairy cows need — for the benefit of both farmer and animal.

“If we can implement precision feeding ... we can save money, giving cows the amount of nutrients they will need.”

It’s good for the environment, as well. For example, less nitrogen is excreted by the animals if they are not being overfed with protein, Dondé noted.

“I really think it’s important to understand what we’re doing. How can we improve if we don’t?”

Together, we will undertake the research the world needs. We invite you to join by supporting critical research at USask.

The power of purpose

Recreation and Sport Business graduate Marianna Sukhu finds meaning through wellness, philanthropy and social connectedness

After moving to Waterloo, navigating the pandemic, completing five co-op terms, becoming a sorority chapter founder, earning her bachelor’s degree and deciding on a career, Marianna Sukhu, who is graduating from Recreation and Sport Business, says the lasting relationships she’s made are what helped her through it all.

“Not everyone has the privilege of having somebody, or a group of people, that share their same values,” Sukhu says. “I have met people at Waterloo who actively push me towards my goals, which makes all the difference.”

Marianna Sukhu laughs at a formal event with a friend.

“I will always preach to go where you’re wanted,” she says.

After her first co-op in a corporate setting, Sukhu wanted something different and sought out an opportunity within her home faculty, where she stayed for the remainder of her co-op terms.

She explored different interests and skills, with her first term as a course and tech support assistant, her second term as a marketing recruitment and event associate and finishing off with an eight-month term as the alumni advancement assistant.

“My degree has provided me with a lot more than I ever anticipated,” Sukhu says. “I don’t think I would have seen this amount of growth at another university, genuinely. I’m so grateful for everything that’s happened over the last five years.”

Sister support

Taking care of her mental and physical health has always been a priority to Sukhu, which drew her towards recreation when deciding on a field of study.

While cooped up at home during the pandemic in her second year, Sukhu says her academic performance was slipping, and she felt an immense need to see people and to be close to her friends.

“I need to be able to touch my friends and say ‘hey, here’s a high five,’” she says. “Being isolated was so hard, and the virtual aspects didn’t make it any easier.”

Marianna Sukhu poses with many of her Kappa Beta Gamma sorority sisters.

“Being in a sorority, I get a sense of community, knowing that if I’m having a bad day or if I’m having a good day, I can text or call any one of my sisters.”

In addition to becoming a chapter founder, Sukhu became the public relations officer, risk management officer, chapter president and now serves as chief compliance officer of the Canadian Division of Kappa Beta Gamma.

“I remember being met with so much positivity,” Sukhu says. “It caught me by surprise because I had a negative connotation of what a sorority was.”

Care for your community

Her chapter works with the Kitchener-Waterloo Child Witness Centre, which provides support, education and advocacy for children, youth and their families throughout the criminal justice process.

“They provide legal aid and care to children that come from difficult family home situations and a lot of us, myself included, can resonate with that,” Sukhu says.

Sukhu has also assisted in many community fundraisers in support of local organizations such as SickKids, the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

But her involvement in the sorority, and her desire to serve the Waterloo community, won’t end when she crosses the stage at convocation.

Sukhu plans to pursue a career as a police officer with the Waterloo Regional Police Service.

“I was dreading telling my mom about it because, as a Black woman pursuing a career in policing, your morals and your safety are often questioned,” Sukhu says.

But Sukhu’s mom lit up with pride when she revealed her career plans.

“My mom’s acceptance was all I needed to hear,” she says.

But before applying for police training, Sukhu plans to work as a personal trainer to gain some professional work experience. Throughout her degree, Sukhu always made time for her fitness passions, which brought her joy and helped her with her mental and physical health; she even took up bodybuilding recreationally.

“I think who I was five years ago is drastically different, thanks to the opportunities that the University of Waterloo has provided me with,” Sukhu says. “I want to take the time to hone my skills and make sure that I’m prepared to take on the responsibilities ahead of me."

Sukhu joins approximately 577 other Faculty of Health students who will cross the stage this spring at the University’s 128th convocation ceremony.
