Enrollment status impacts completion time. What is the enrollment status? Whether you are enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis. As expected, when enrolled full-time, students take heavier course loads than part-time students. Full-time students usually complete program requirements quicker than part-time students. The average completion time for a full-time student enrolled in an online PhD in project management is four to six years. The average completion time for a part-time student enrolled in the same type of program is five to seven years.

While full-time enrollment shortens completion time, full-time programs require more time and effort. On the flip side, part-time programs offer flexibility. Part-time programs are beneficial to students who work and have outside obligations, such as family responsibilities.

Online Doctorates in Project Management Programs Ranking Guidelines

We ranked these degree programs based on quality, curricula, school awards, rankings, and reputation.

Our Methodology

Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.

Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools  cannot buy better rankings  at TBS.

While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.

  • Affordability
  • Online Enrollment

Data Sources

The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology

About our ranking factors.

Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.

Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.

We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.

  • Collapse All

Academics - 75%

Affordability - 15%, online enrollment - 10%.

In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.

If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through  contact page .

Mid-to-late-career project managers — who have at least 5-10 years of experience — can advance into positions like senior executives, business professors, or high-level managers for corporations or nonprofit organizations.

While job requirements vary, most employers — especially those at large corporations and high-profile institutions — prefer to hire  top executives  who hold an advanced degree and possess ample experience in project management or a related area. Many top executives are self-employed or work in professional, scientific, or technical services.

Should I Earn an Online Doctorate in Project Management?

While the decision to pursue a doctorate in project management online requires a strong commitment, students can look forward to a wealth of personal and professional benefits if they put in hard work. Like any field, project management rewards those who possess terminal degrees with exclusive job opportunities and increased salary potential.

Project managers with a doctoral degree are eligible for many of the highest-paying jobs in the field. For example, experienced top executives, like  CEOs and operations managers , can earn an annual salary of more than $200,000.

Graduates of a doctoral program in project management have a broad set of career options available to them. These workers can qualify for roles throughout business, government, and academia.

Project managers with a doctoral degree can also make their own hours. While many project managers work in professional, scientific, and technical services — or for the government — the  largest sector  of project management doctoral degree-holders (23%) is self-employed. For example, consultants typically obtain years of experience in addition to an advanced degree, giving them maximum flexibility in their work schedule and field of expertise.

Earning a doctoral degree in project management online can also save students time and money. Whether a doctoral candidate plans to move up to an executive or academic career, pursuing an online degree enables students to accumulate industry experience while fitting their education into their busy schedule.

What Can I Do With an Online Doctorate in Project Management?

Project managers with a doctorate and years of experience can pursue their choice of career. Equipped with highly adaptable skills, managers with a doctorate may possess the qualifications needed for employment within public and private institutions, government agencies, and academia.

Nearly every sector of the workforce requires project managers. A  large percentage  of project managers provide professional services for private businesses, large corporations, and startup companies. Many senior project managers in their late career work in fields such as IT, construction, and manufacturing. Others work as self-employed consultants or management and leadership specialists. While specific requirements vary, employers often prefer candidates who also hold the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Project managers may also pursue a more specialized career path at a government agency, working as a scholar or a research scientist. Doctoral degree-holders can also qualify for jobs in the public sector such as mayors or governors.

Professionals may qualify for different types of positions depending on what kind of degree they earn. For instance, a doctorate in business administration (DBA) is typically reserved for professionals interested in jobs in the business world. These graduates pursue careers as top executives within global corporations. They may also work as independent consultants.

Alternatively, a Ph.D. usually leads to a more research-oriented degree path. Graduates with this degree usually fill scholarly positions, such as college professors, or serve as research experts for private institutions. While some community colleges and vocational schools accept instructors with only a master’s degree, graduates with an online doctorate in project management may qualify for postsecondary education positions at national and international universities, including Ivy League institutions with world-renowned business schools.

Project Management Doctoral Program Overview

Students interested in achieving a doctoral education in project management have multiple options from which to choose. The field offers different terminal degrees, each with their own set of characteristics and each leading to different career paths for graduates. The sections below outline the application instructions, sample curricula, and potential careers for these doctoral degrees in project management.

Types of Doctoral Degrees in Project Management

Prospective doctorate in project management students can choose a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in project management, a doctorate in management (DM) with a concentration in project management, a doctor of business administration (DBA) with a concentration in project management, or a similar non-Ph.D. doctorate in the subject. Students should carefully consider which degree serves their individual career goals and interests the best.

Ph.D. and DBA tracks share much of the same core curricula but emphasize different themes. The research-oriented Ph.D. typically culminates in a dissertation, while the DBA stresses pragmatic business and management skills; a DBA may require a capstone experience in lieu of a formal dissertation process. Alternatively, a DM combines distinct characteristics of both the theoretical Ph.D. and the applied DBA degrees.

Along with different graduation requirements, each degree has its own timeline for completion; program length also depends on whether a student enrolls on a full-time or part-time basis. For instance, a traditional Ph.D. can last 4-8 years, while some DMs or DBAs promote career advancement for graduates through accelerated programs. Not all schools offer online doctoral degrees in project management, but many that do let full-time students complete their doctorate in 3-5 years online.

In most cases, students aspiring to careers in postsecondary education, academia, or research in project management choose a Ph.D. Conversely, candidates looking to become self-employed consultants, corporate executive, or government leader may prefer the business and management skills earned during a DM or DBA track.

Application Requirements and Admission Criteria

While admission requirements vary from one school to another, applicants must meet the same general criteria to qualify for most project management doctoral programs. For instance, students must possess a master’s degree from an accredited institution — typically in any subject for a DBA and in project management or a closely related concentration for a Ph.D. program. Most programs require a minimum GPA, usually ranging from 3.0-3.5.

Experience requirements also vary. As a terminal degree, schools may expect applicants to be currently employed in the field or hold several years of experience at the time of application. Each program specifies the nature and length of its experience requirements for doctoral applicants; some Ph.D. programs accept a broader range of academic experience, while DBAs tend to prefer applicants with varied experiences in management and business.

While programs vary, many doctoral programs in project management follow the same structure and format. A doctorate in this subject splits coursework between core and specialization courses and usually culminates in a dissertation or capstone experience. In some cases, programs also require a practicum or field experience, as well as elective course options.

Doctoral programs often differ in the amount of credits required to graduate. A Ph.D. in project management is roughly 48-60 credits, while a DBA or DM may require around 100 credits. A school that offers a doctorate in project management online may also require brief on-campus residencies, such as an orientation/workshop or a dissertation seminar. However, most online programs give learners ample flexibility, such as multiple start dates and/or accelerated completion times.

Some programs require a multifaceted final project experience. A critical element of a doctoral degree, students should expect to conclude any Ph.D., DBA, or DM track with a dissertation or capstone; however, some programs also require a comprehensive doctoral exam or evaluation as a final requirement. The list below describes some of the courses students can expect to complete.

Program Outcomes

Earning a doctoral degree can help experienced project managers elevate their careers to new heights. While students with lower-level degrees in project management qualify for entry-level jobs in business and management, doctoral degree-holders qualify for executive-level positions that require strong leadership skills.

Graduates of a project management doctoral program pursue advanced positions that require strong writing, research, and strategic management skills. In addition to core business and leadership concepts, doctoral programs in project management build soft skills for the workforce. Doctoral programs emphasize decision-making, communication, problem-solving, and time management skills to produce successful and effective project managers.

Accreditation for Online Project Management Doctoral Programs

Students should ensure that any prospective schools hold regional or national accreditation through an agency approved by the  U.S. Department of Education  or the  Council for Higher Education Accreditation .

Additionally, many of the best programs feature programmatic accreditation, which is specific to a particular discipline or field of study. For project management, students should look for programs that hold accreditation from the  Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs  (ACBSP). This organization accredits project management programs and specializations that meet the council’s rigorous standards, which are related to factors such as quality, academic support, and faculty credentials. ACBSP was the first organization in the U.S. to award accreditation specifically for college business programs at all levels of study.

There are very few online doctorates in project management. We still went ahead and ranked the best that we could find according to the following.

Methodology

To rank the best online PhDs in Project Management, we started by collecting a list of schools. In order to be part of our initial considerations, each school must offer at least one online or hybrid program in project management, must be based in the United States, hold proper accreditation, and can not operate as a for-profit institution. Due to the lack of relevant programs that met our initial criteria, we also included other doctoral programs in project management.

Once we had a list of potential schools, they were scored according to these factors.

  • Freshman Retention Rate (⅓ of final score)
  • Graduate Rate (⅓ of final score)
  • Affordability (⅓ of final score)

Each school could have scored as high as 300 points. Once we determined the schools’ scores in each area, they were added together to obtain the final score. Schools are presented in ascending order according to that score below.

The information we used to create this ranking was taken from the schools’ websites whenever possible. When insufficient information was present, we also use information from other reputable sources such as the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. News & World Report , Niche.com, and Collegedata.com. We would like to note that some schools that may have otherwise ranked are not featured here due to incomplete information.

No college or university is ever awarded preferential treatment by us for any reason. The clearly-outlined methodology could easily be repeated to obtain the same results.

What is a Project Management Degree?

online phd project management

Most project management degrees focus on the five processes of project management and those are:

  • Controlling

Degrees in project management are available at basically any level of education. There are project management certificates, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and even doctoral degrees.

Project management certificate programs do not go very in-depth into the field, and they are designed to introduce students to the concepts and skills that they’ll need to function as a manager in the most basic sense. Some example courses include Introduction to Project Management, Basic Risk Management, Introduction to Accounting, and other very foundational and broad courses. The courses in these programs are going to focus solely on management and not the true inner workings of business.

Undergraduate degrees like an associate or bachelor’s degree program are going to take that and expound upon it. The curriculum is going to feature courses like Introduction to Business, Foundations of Project Management, Introduction to Business Law, Fundamentals of Leadership, and more. This type of degree will prepare you for entry-level jobs in project management. You can also customize your curriculum at the undergraduate level with ease because you will have plenty of electives to choose from.

The master’s level is the place you can truly specialize your project management degree, and the same is true for the doctorate level if you want to take it a step further. More specializations are available when you get to more advanced levels. There are also capstone projects like a thesis or a dissertation that will allow you to focus even more on the particular area of project management that you’re interested in.

What Can I Do With a Degree in Project Management?

online phd project management

By definition, a project manager is a leader. However, the actual tasks you may do in your day to day when on the job are varied. Some businesses may put a lot more responsibility on their project manager, including designing, planning, and executing a project. This would see you overseeing the project from start to finish, managing the team who are working on the project, and ensuring that it is completely done according to the objective of the project as a whole.

Some project management jobs would have you just overseeing the project that was designed and planned by someone else, or it could be evaluated by a third party once it was completed. It all depends on the way the company you work for functions. A very general list of the things you would be expected to do as a project manager is as follows.

  • Develop the big idea for the project
  • Organize the tasks required to complete the project
  • Assemble the team that will actually do the work
  • Ensure that stakeholders understand the results of the project
  • Budgeting for the project and managing that budget
  • Leading the team you put together and making sure targets are being met
  • Managing the handover, so that the whole of the company can effectively work with the output of the project upon completion

How Long Does it Take to Get a PhD in Project Management?

online phd project management

In addition, there are a lot of schools that offer accelerated study options. These tend to be more rigorous, and it may be hard to maintain a job while you are studying because the classes are much shorter and, for lack of a better word, action-packed. Sometimes classes are shortened down to eight weeks in length, packing in the same amount of material in a shorter amount of time. That is what an accelerated degree program does. It takes that program and increases the number of credits you earn each semester to make it shorter.

How long it takes you to complete a PhD in Project Management also depends on how long it takes you to complete your dissertation. Some students can finish in the allotted time, but others may need a little more, stretching it out over several extra semesters than was outlined in the general degree plan.

When you choose an online PhD in Project Management, you can expect your degree to be done in an average of three years.

At the doctorate level, the fastest program you will be able to take in project management online is the DBA in Project Management offered at Liberty University, which takes an average of three years. Chief Operations Officers are high-level executives that look after the daily optimization of a business. This encompasses several departments within a company, and you would be responsible for making sure that the business as a whole is running smoothly, instead of just overseeing one particular project at a time. This career requires a lot of experience and education, but it is the highest career in project management that you can hold apart from being a CEO.

Lastly, we’ll touch on the obvious. You could use your project management degree to become a teacher. This usually requires a PhD in Project Management or another doctorate degree with some additional requirements to make sure you are able to teach. What Is the Difference Between an On-Campus Project Management PhD and an Online PhD in Project Management?

The difference between an on-campus project management PhD and an online PhD in Project Management is the scope of the research you can conduct, the cost, the level of respectability, and the learning environment you’ll be in. Below is an explanation of these key differences.

Online PhD vs On-Campus PhD: Key Differences

  • Cost. On-campus students can more easily get a project management doctorate based on research and residency components. Online project management PhDs are more course-based and are more restricted in their research topic potential.

  • Networking opportunities. Online PhD programs have fewer socialization and networking opportunities than campus-based PhD programs. As a student, you’ll have more access to faculty and other students if you’re enrolled in an in-person program.

You will also need to determine how you’ll fulfill any on-site or virtual residency requirements. This step requires you to present a projection of your overall dissertation topic and process.

The third step you need to take to earn your PhD is to complete the degree’s required core coursework, the amount of which will differ depending on your project management PhD program’s specialization. You can sometimes transfer previous graduate coursework to reduce the total credit requirement.

This step usually takes place simultaneously with your coursework schedule. You need to begin your dissertation research process. This includes getting topic approval from your advisor, conducting research on your chosen topic, and passing all preliminary presentations.

  • Project Management

The Master of Science in Project Management is designed to provide you with the practical skills and theoretical concepts you need to lead complex projects.

The Master of Science in Project Management prepares you to drive innovation in your organization by giving you the skills and tools to effectively lead volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous projects from inception to completion in global markets. Accredited by the Project Management Institute’s Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC), our curriculum has a two-pronged approach that provides the foundational knowledge of scientific-based project management tools, organizational strategies, and theoretical concepts, coupled with the opportunity to deepen subject matter expertise through targeted concentration work and innovative project management concepts.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Master of Science in Project Management program in Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies is to prepare learners to be effective project management practitioners capable of applying project management processes and the technical, professional, and strategic expertise necessary for managing projects successfully. With emphasis on experiential learning, the program provides dynamic opportunities for learners with varying degrees of work experience to practice their knowledge both globally and collaboratively while implementing traditional and innovative project management concepts to real-life and complex projects.

Accreditation Information

The Master of Science in Project Management is accredited by the PMI Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC). The GAC Accredited Program seal is a mark of Project Management Institute, Inc.

The Master of Science in Project Management is accredited by the PMI Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC). The GAC Accredited Program seal is a mark of Project Management Institute, Inc.

In October of 2021, the Master of Science in Project Management accreditation was re-affirmed for the maximum five-year accreditation cycle (originally accredited in 2009) by the PMI Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC) , the world's leading association for project management professionals. Accreditation is achieved by meeting the GAC’s rigorous standards, which include an assessment of program objectives and outcomes, a review of onsite and online resources, evaluations of faculty and students, and proof of continuous improvements in the area of project management.

Graduates of our GAC-accredited program are granted a substantial 12-month reduction credit toward the experience requirement when they complete an application for any PMI certification. This means that those applying for the PMI certification will only need 24 months of project management experience, instead of 36 months as outlined by GAC. This new benefit applies retroactively to our program’s initial accreditation date of 2009.

Career Outlook

According to PMI, through the decade ending in 2020, 15.7 million new project management roles will be created. The profession is expected to grow by US $6.61 trillion. Now is the time for professionals and job-seekers to build project management skills, as demand for these skills outstrips supply.

In the United States, this growth will mean:

  • Rising salaries
  • Growth in the project-intensive sectors of manufacturing, business services, finance and insurance, oil and gas, information services, construction, and utilities

In 10 countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom) with established or quickly developing project-intensive sectors, project management roles are expected to grow by 13.4 million through 2020.

America needs transformative leaders in preK–12 education whose passion for education quality and equity is matched by a knowledge of learning and development, the organizational management skills to translate visionary ideas into practical success, and a firm grasp of the role of context and politics in shaping leadership. Graduates of the three-year, multidisciplinary Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education will be prepared to become those leaders.

The Ed.L.D Program — taught by faculty from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Harvard Business School, and the Harvard Kennedy School — will train you for system-level leadership positions in school systems, state and federal departments of education, and national nonprofit organizations. Ed.L.D. is a full-time, three-year program built on a cohort learning model. Cohorts consist of up to 25 students from diverse professional backgrounds (including district/charter management leaders, nonprofit directors, principals, teachers, and policy researchers) who progress through the program together.

All Ed.L.D. students receive a full tuition funding package plus stipends, work opportunities, and a paid third-year residency at a partner organization.

The Ed.L.D. Program prepares graduates to do work for the public good in the American public education sector, whether that be at the system or state level. Specifically, the program is designed to accelerate the progress graduates make toward achieving meaningful impact in influential roles and/or crossing boundaries in the following spaces in the public education sector:

  • PreK–12 district or CMO leadership roles : superintendent of schools, chief academic officer, and/or deputy superintendent
  • Foundation/philanthropy roles:  director, president and CEO, senior fellow
  • Education nonprofit roles : president or executive director of backbone or collective impact organizations which support preK–12 schools. Ed.L.D. graduates will lead education nonprofits that explicitly focus on improving outcomes and opportunities for children, families, and communities.
  • State or federal education leadership roles : commissioner or deputy commissioner roles. Could also include public education advocacy or education policy advisers to senior government officials.
  • Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation roles:  Founder, CEO, president

Curriculum Information

The Ed.L.D. curriculum is a balance of multidisciplinary coursework and practice-based learning. Core courses and electives are taught by recognized leaders from across Harvard’s graduate programs in fields like data-based education reform, organizational change and innovation, and effective leadership strategies for urban schools. You will develop and test your leadership skills through team projects and an immersive third-year residency.

All students in the cohort take the same classes in four foundational content areas: learning and teaching, leadership and organizational change, politics and policy, adult development, and leadership inside and out (including one-on-one executive coaching). Courses taken during the first-year focus on practice-based learning and serve as the framework of your first-year experience.

Sample HGSE Courses

  • Leading Change
  • How People Learn
  • Ed.L.D. Proseminar
  • Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Learning
  • Race, Equity, and Leadership
  • Practicing Leadership Inside and Out
  • Sector Change

Each cohort member works with program advisers to choose an individualized sequence of electives from any of the Harvard graduate schools. You will work closely with the program faculty and staff during your second year to determine the best match with a partner organization for your third-year residency. Matches are driven by mutual interest between the resident and the partner organization, and each student's career and learning goals and geographic preferences.

  • Second Year Practicing Leadership Inside and Out
  • Driving Change
  • Education Sector Nonprofits
  • Negotiation Workshop
  • Coaching with Equity in Mind
  • Ethnic Studies and Education
  • Deeper Learning for All:  Designing a 21st Century School System

You will take part in a 10-month paid residency at one of our partner organizations. There, you will work on a strategic project which synthesizes your experience and learning into a written Capstone project. You will stay connected to your Ed.L.D. cohort and HGSE through technology and by returning to Harvard periodically for intensive workshops.

Paid Residency

Our partner organizations include school systems and departments of education, as well as some of the nation's most influential and dynamic nonprofit, mission-based for-profit, and philanthropic organizations.

You will be intentionally pushed out of your comfort zones and asked to work systemically and make a significant contribution to the partner organization. In addition, the residency will provide you with the professional mentoring, practical experiences, and network of connections they need to position themselves as future leaders in the education sector.

Strategic Project

You will define (with supervisors from your partner organization) a strategic project on which to focus. You will have the opportunity to lead one or two major efforts on behalf of the organization, such as the creation or implementation of current initiatives. The project allows you to practice and improve leadership skills, add important value to the mission and strategy of the partner organization, work systemically, and hold high-level accountability.

During the residency period, you will produce a written Capstone. The Capstone is a descriptive, analytic, and reflective account of your third-year leadership contributions to a strategic project within an Ed.L.D. partner organization. It is a demonstration of your ability to engage others, develop strategy to successfully address and diagnose challenges, work toward a vision and goals, and learn from the results.
