Master of Science (MSc)

MSc is a postgraduate program by which students make their career in the research field. It is one of the most opted courses after graduation in India. Every year, lakhs of students appear in IITs, IISC, and NITs for 2 years MSc program to develop their personal and professional skills.

You can get admission in IITs for MSc courses after clearing the IIT JAM, JEST Exam , etc.

Integrated PhD

It is a 5 years dual degree research programme in which you can study for a master’s and Ph.D. course together (MSc or MTech for the first two years and the Ph.D. for the next three years). In this course, candidates mainly study Science, Engineering & Technology.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) , Bangalore provides the integrated Ph.D. course through IIT JAM.

Joint MSc - PhD

Joint MSc - Ph.D. is two separate degrees programme (MSc and Ph.D.). It provides you a chance to move out of the university/institute after completing a master’s degree. The reasons for not completing the course can be: -

You don’t want to study further or

Your score did not cross the minimum CGPA 8 in MSc.

Only, Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur provide the Joint MSc - Ph.D. course through IIT JAM.

MSc - Ph.D. Dual Degree

MSc – Ph.D. dual degree is the course in which you have to complete your MSc and Ph.D. from the same institute. Otherwise, you will not be awarded any degree. In this course, your MSc score won’t matter.

Only the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur provide dual degree courses through IIT JAM.

Joint Admission test for Masters (JAM) - 2024

Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) is an all-India examination conducted across the country jointly by Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science. JAM is an all India Entrance examination for admission to M.Sc. (Two Year), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree and other Post-Bachelor's Degree programmes at the IITs and to the Integrated Ph.D. programmes at IISc.

In order to view offers from Participating Institutes and make decision, GATE qualified candidates are required to register at COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal). Fee Structure

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) were established to cater to the country’s growing need for trained manpower with higher learning in science and technology. The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, first of the chain of IITs, was established in 1950 in the idyllic and sylvan settings at Hijli in West Bengal. From a modest start in the dilapidated Hijli jail building, IIT Kharagpur has grown into one of the largest and most well-known technological institutes of the country. The handsome main building with its majestic tower was inaugurated in 1956. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in the first convocation in the same year said “here in the place of that Hijli detention camp stands this fine monument of India, representing India’s urges, India’s future in the making. This picture seems to me symbolic of changes that are coming to India”.

Today, IIT Kharagpur has come a long way to its present position of pre-eminence with 23 academic departments, 8 multidisciplinary centres, a School of Management, a School of Telecommunications, a School of Medical Science and Technology and a School of Intellectual Property Law, a School of Water Resources, a School of Infrastructure Design and Management, a School of Engineering Entrepreneurship, a School of Energy Science, a School of Environmental Science and Technology, a School of Nano-Science and Technology and several sophisticated central facilities. It is the largest and the most diversified among all the IITs and continuously strives to produce scientists and technologists of the highest calibre and integrity to help the nation become self-reliant in its technological needs and to provide leadership in the field of technical education and research. Some of the distinctive features of the programmes at IIT Kharagpur are science based engineering education, emphasis on complete education, continuous internal evaluation and flexibility for experimentation, upgradation and innovation in curriculum design. IIT Kharagpur has a number of distinctions to its credit among all the IITs, such as the first Master’s programme on Management, first Master’s Programme on Medical Science and Technology for practicing Medical Doctors. Online Application for JMP 2021 at IIT Kharagpur is closed, the registered candidates are requested to rectify the issues in the application portal at the earliest. Due to the unprecedented Pandemic situation the last date for JMP 2021 Online Application is extended till 3 rd May 2021. Last date of Online Application for JMP 2021 at IIT Kharagpur is extended till 27 th April 2021. Candidates those who have successfully registered but did not receive the email with login ID and password are requested to click on 'Forgot Password' in the Login Page. MSc PhD Dual Degree

Admission : Through the Joint Admission for M.Sc. (JAM) exam ( www.iitb.ac.in/jam ).

Advisor /Guide / Supervisor : The allocation of the Guide will be at the end of fourth semester based on mutual (i.e., candidate and the guide) consent. The CGPI may be used to resolve conflicts, if any.

Award of the degrees : The candidate will be awarded both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees simultaneously on successful completion of the program.

Comprehensive exam : This is an oral examination and it is mandatory to successfully complete this for continuing in the program.

WHO WILL EVALUATE: The committee will comprise of five Faculty Members and at least one should be from Department Post-Graduate Committee.

SCOPE: The candidate will be tested for his competence in subject areas related to the likely research topic that (s)he will pursue and the courses registered till date.

COMMITTEE’S RECOMMENDATION: The committee will recommend that (i) the candidate be allowed to register for the Ph.D. program subject to completion of the prescribed course work, OR (ii) the candidate is not up to the mark and may be given at the most one more chance to appear for the comprehensive, OR (iii) the candidate, subject to successful completion of the prescribed course work, may be awarded only the M.Sc. degree and is NOT allowed to continue with the Ph.D. program.

WHEN: During the fourth semester or the summer semester following the fourth semester i.e., a candidate who joins the program in July 2009, will have to have the comprehensive between January and July, 2011.

Course work : For five semesters. A candidate who fails to maintain a minimum CGPI of 6.0 will have to leave the program. No degree will be awarded to such candidates.

Duration : Six years

Exit policy : Candidate who leave the program mid-way will not be awarded any degree.

Fellowship : Teaching Assistantship (TAship) will be provided subject to the fulfillment of the academic criteria and satisfactory research progress. TAship will be provided for a maximum period of 7 years as follows: 1. Rs.6,000 /- pm from the date of joining till the date of confirmation of Ph.D. registration. 2. Rs.25,000 /- pm for first two years after confirmation of Ph.D. registration (3rd & 4th year of DD programme). 3. Rs.28,000/- pm for next three years (i.e. 5th, 6th & 7th year). Students who qualify in the national level JRF exams conducted by UGC, CSIR, GATE, DBT and ICMR can avail of these fellowships from the commencement of Semester V

M.Sc. project vis-à-vis Ph.D. topic : A student may continue his M.Sc. project for Ph.D.

Research progress : This will be monitored by a Research Progress Committee, just as in the case of students who are admitted directly to the Ph.D. program of the Institute.

MSc - Phd Programme

The energy sector provides significant research challenges in the development of new materials, devices and energy systems. Fundamental research contributions are required for the development of cost-effective and sustainable energy systems. The problems of finite fossil fuel reserves and global warming require fundamental breakthroughs in energy extraction, processing, conversion and utilisation. For instance, recent advances in nano-science and nano-technology have already resulted in potential applications for new materials in hydrogen energy storage, improved batteries, super capacitors, fuel cells. Several innovative research solutions are required to shape the sustainable energy systems of the future.

The Dual Degree M.Sc.- Ph.D. programme plans to develop researchers who can provide fundamental inputs required to meet the challenges of the energy sector. The intake is to be through JAM (18 seats, from CY, PH & MA papers). The core course will provide a background of analytical and laboratory techniques as well as courses related to understanding energy systems. Several electives (8 courses) are provided in the curriculum to enable the student to specialise in their area of interest.

The DD M.Sc.- Ph.D. programme will meet the future need for skilled researchers in the energy field.

M.Sc. - Ph.D. Dual Degree

The MSc.Ph.D. dual degree in Operations Research is an integrated doctoral programme, for those interested in a research oriented career. The programme is open for students with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Statistics, and interested in research in engineering / interdisciplinary areas. The academic programme leading to the MSc.Ph.D. dual degree involves foundation courses, advanced courses and research work. The candidate will be awarded both the MSc. and Ph.D. degrees simultaneously on successful completion of the program.

Semester-wise Credits Distribution for MScPhD

Key Points:

Course-work for MScPhD dual degree programme to be completed in first 2 years (4 semesters).
Electives : Of the minimum of 6 electives (36 credits) required, at least 1 Institute elective (6 credits) and at least 4 IE labeled department electives(of which one to be an 'Applied elective', and one from ‘Approved list’ as specified by IEOR DPGC) to be taken.
Students need to maintain a minimum CPI of 7.0 at the end of Semester 3 and all subsequent semesters to continue for Ph.D.
Should inform the department by the end of the Semester 3.
In lieu of MScPhD Project 2 in Semester 4, they can instead do at least 12 credits through electives/ R&D project.

Students who continue with PhD, need to do MScPhD Project 2 in Semester 4 (Evaluation to be held by June 30th), and clear the Ph.D. Qualifiers .
Ph.D Qualifiers for the students continuing for Ph.D will be held at the end of Semester 4.
Additional learning courses may be prescribed by the RPC/Qualifier committee to the MScPh.D student at the end of 4th semester.
Students to sign up with a faculty supervisor for their Ph.D., based on mutual consent, by the end of their 4th semester.
MScPh.D Research Project vs. Ph.D. topic : A student may continue his/her 3rd semester project topic for Ph.D. but can choose a different topic/ supervisor also.
Research progress : This will be monitored by a Research Progress Committee, mainly through an Annual Progress Seminar presented by the student.

IIT JAM Seats 2024 -The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Joint Admission Test (JAM) is one of the most sought-after tests for admission to the various IITs in India. The IIT JAM exam is a national-level entrance exam conducted by IIT Madras . The IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) is an entrance exam conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for admission to various M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D., M.Sc.-Ph.D. dual degree, and other post-bachelor degree programs at IITs and integrated Ph.D. degree programs at IISc. The exam is held once a year, usually in February.

Eligibility Criteria:

For admission to M.Sc., M.Sc.-Ph.D. dual degree, and other post-bachelor degree programs, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) in aggregate.
For admission to the integrated Ph.D. programs at IISc, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree with at least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) in aggregate.
The exam is conducted for seven papers: Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH).
The duration of the exam is 3 hours.
The question paper consists of three types of questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
The total marks for the exam vary for each paper.

Candidates who meet the cutoff marks will be selected for the interview round. It's advisable for them to review the previous year's IDBI JAM cutoff marks to understand the historical trends and the level of competition.

What is M.Sc Ph.D

M.Sc Ph.D is a three to six years-long dual degree programme that combines MSc and P.hD. This integrated course rewards a student with a double degree. A M.Sc. is a postgraduate degree in science discipline. Candidates who have completed a B.Sc. are eligible for enrolling in M.Sc. While a PhD is a doctoral level research degree programme. Candidates who have completed 10+2+3+2 or 10+2+4 level course are eligible for enrolling in the Ph.D. course. The multi-disciplinary curriculum covers the core and elective course modules. M.Sc. Ph.D integrated course is designed to fulfil the requirements of a modern researcher of familiarity with the experimental and theoretical fields.

The minimum eligibility criteria for SC/ST candidates are relaxed to pass class over the first class in the qualifying examination.

IIT JAM Eligibility Criteria: Who are Eligibile for IIT JAM 2024?

Candidates who have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant discipline, such as B.Tech/B.Sc/B.E., are eligible to take the IIT JAM entrance test 2024. There is no minimum age requirement for IIT JAM 2024 examination participation. Furthermore, individuals who have taken a gap year after graduation or who are working professionals are eligible to apply for the JAM entrance exam 2024.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) currently offers Ph.D admissions to students with a qualifying Master’s (M.Tech or M.E or MS) or Bachelor’s degree (B.Tech or B.E) in the relevant field. In order to attract fresh and talented students with bachelor’s degrees, many institutions, including IITs in the country, have started various Dual Degree programmes such as MS(R) + Ph.D and M.Tech + Ph.D, etc. Such Dual Degree programmes are well received by various industries and educational institutions in the recruitment of their faculty in comparison with a candidate having a Ph.D degree directly after a B.Tech or B.E degree. Many departments of IIT Guwahati have been successfully running the above Dual Degree programmes. In view of the various advantages of the above Dual Degree programmes, the department of mechanical engineering has introduced a Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme with five specialisations in M.Tech to students having a B.Tech or B.E as their qualifying degree. The proposed dual degree programme is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020), with a provision for exiting the programme with a M.Tech degree.

Rules and Regulations of Department of Mechanical Engineering

1) Department of Mechanical Engineering offers five specializations to the students of Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) to obtain their M.Tech degree in (a) Machine Design, (b) Fluids and Thermal Engineering, (c) Manufacturing Science and Engineering, (d) Aerodynamics and Propulsion, and (e) Computational Mechanics. This programme is offered only to students who have B. Tech or B.E in relevant branches of Mechanical Engineering and who would like to pursue both M.Tech and PhD degrees in the department of mechanical engineering at IIT Guwahati.

2) The Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme offered by the department (ME) shall be governed by the Master’s + Ph.D degree ordinance of the institute.

3) Students of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme are admitted in ME department only in the Regular Category in every July session of the year. A student seeking admission to the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme should have a valid GATE Score. Admissions for these students shall follow the admission rules of the institute for regular Ph.D candidates.

4) At the time of filing the application against the institute’s PhD admissions’ advertisement (July session), a candidate needs to opt for the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme. Candidates who have not opted for this programme and apply directly to the PhD programme are not eligible to enrol in the proposed Dual Degree. Similarly, candidates (with B.Tech or B.E as qualifying degree) who apply for PhD admissions in the December session are also not eligible to enrol in the proposed Dual Degree and hence they do not get the M.Tech degree. Such students then can have B.Tech or B. E + Ph.D degrees.

5) A student admitted to the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) works on a full-time basis in the institute and receives an assistant-ship from the institute or any other recognized funding agency.

6) Admitted students of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme shall follow the ordinances of the Ph.D programme and other rules of the institute.

7) The maximum duration of the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme is seven years from the date of admission. After successful completion of the defence examination, the student will be awarded both the M Tech and Ph.D. degrees.

8) Students in the Dual Degree (M.Tech + Ph.D) programme must do the prescribed course work for three semesters. The requirements for the course work will be a minimum of 12 PG-level courses with a minimum aggregate of 72 credits spanning over the three semesters. Please refer to Annexure-A for a detailed course structure of the department of mechanical engineering in various specializations. After successful completion of the prescribed course, the students are permitted to begin their Ph.D work as per the ordinance of the institute. After successful completion of the Ph.D, a student will also be awarded M.Tech degree in the specialization in which he/she does the prescribed course work as mentioned in the Annexure-B.

9) Exit Policy from the Dual degree programme and award of M.Tech degree. Awarding Master’s degree only: A student can discontinue the Dual degree program and leave the institute with M.Tech degree as per the Master’s + Ph.D ordinances which is as follows: After successful completion of the course work, comprehensive examination, and SOAS by the student, should the Doctoral Committee (DC) feel that the progress of the student is not satisfactory at the time of the first annual progress review, the DC may recommend the submission of a master's thesis, suggesting the volume of work to be completed for the master’s degree. The student will submit the suggested master's thesis and defend the same. The procedure for the submission of a master's thesis and the conduct of an oral examination are as per the relevant clauses of MTech/MDes/MS Ordinances. In that case, the student will receive only the master’s degree as per the enrollment. The department invokes this option only in the rarest of rare cases.
