“At long last a collection in English that does justice to the breadth, depth, and contemporary significance of Simmel’s writings on the arts! With many new translations and a wide-ranging introduction, Harrington’s volume portrays the influential modernist philosopher and pioneering cultural theorist in deep and critical engagement with a rapidly changing world. A powerful testament to Simmel’s conception of philosophical culture— and to the transdisciplinary significance of a thinker whose achievements continue to resist disciplinary categorization.”
Elizabeth Goodstein, Emory University
“Georg Simmel is known in sociology for many things: the structure of social groups, the philosophy of money, metaphysical essays on life, individuality and social forms, the metropolis, and social differentiation. However, apart from the publication of Rembrandt in 2005, Simmel’s fascinating studies of culture, literature, and art forms have been neglected. Therefore, we owe Austin Harrington a serious debt of gratitude for editing and translating Simmel’s diverse publications on the theatre, sculpture, style and representation, and aesthetics into a single volume. In addition, I strongly recommend Harrington’s modestly entitled ‘Introduction’ as a comprehensive and meticulous commentary on Simmel and contemporary evaluations of his oeuvre. This volume will deepen and expand our understanding of the Simmel legacy for years to come.”
Bryan S. Turner, Australian Catholic University and the Graduate Centre CUNY
"The long and detailed introduction that Harrington provides is probably one of the best introductions to Simmel's works. . . Harrington's goal of providing the reader with a complete and well-structured collection of the most important Simmel essays on art and aesthetics in just one book is fully achieved."

Review: Georg Simmel, Essays on Art and Aesthetics
2021, Theory, Culture & Society
With the publication of Georg Simmel's Essays on Art and Aesthetics there is now an illuminating collection of Simmel's essays that makes a decisive dimension of Simmel's thought available to English readers. Austin Harrington's masterfully curated selection, introduced with a thorough and informative discussion, presents Simmel's thought on art and aesthetics in a way that makes it now for the first time possible to fully appreciate the essayistic yet coherently critical thrust of Simmel's thought in its extraordinary range and detail.

The writings of the Austrian novelist and essayist Robert Musil provide sociology with vital problems and reflections. Indeed, Musil introduces discussions that extend conventional understanding of modernity – sociology’s general object of analysis. The article focuses on two major sets of questions in Musil’s work: the shapelessness of man and the relation between reason and sentiments. Both problems are essential in that genuine twentieth-century experience which Musil calls functional stupidity: the functionalisation of the mind to collective demands of the party, the race and the nation. The article discusses Musil’s arguments by relating them to central propositions in classical sociology (Simmel, Weber, Kracauer, Tönnies, Park). Classical sociology, in turn, is defined as a sub-discourse of classical modern reflection.

The philosopher and sociologist Georg Simmel made repeated efforts throughout his career to address the crisis of modern culture by drawing on a wide repertoire of scholarly discourses and imaginative fictions. An overlooked and unique feature of his early works include humorous vignettes and free-verse poems in pseudonymous pieces published in the avant-garde journal Jugend. In later writings, he advances his own life-philosophy through an idiosyncratic use of Goethe’s scientific, autobiographical, and literary works in an attempt to articulate what is distinctive about the modern worldview. Focussing on these lesser-known writings reveals the tragi-comic character of his approach to modern individuality in a variety of cultural spheres, and in the life of theory itself. Like Simmel’s vitalist quest for the archetype or “primary phenomenon (Urphänomen) […] of the idea of Goethe” and in his formulation of “the values of Goethean Life”, this essay offers a kind of theorizing about th...

This essay argues argues that there is a persistent tension between two visions of the self in Simmel’s work. In one of these, which I call a decentered conception, the self is characterized by complex, socially-constituted multiplicity. In the other, Simmel strove to understand and reconstruct the grounds for an authentically unique individuality, particularly though not exclusively in his late work. Each of these visions is richer and more complex than has sometimes been appreciated. Important recent arguments about Simmel’s late work, including “The Law of the Individual,” _The View of Life_, and his Lebensphilosophie in general, have seen it as putting forward a conception of the relational self that overcame this tension. I argue that unreconciled tensions remained, though it is true that his late work was the culmination of his sociological project, not its abandonment. I propose that Simmel’s mature conception of individuality would be better captured by the notion of multiple authenticities rather than a singular, unified law of the individual. This would have been more in keeping with his sociology as well as with his views about the importance of moral conflict.

In sociology, aesthetic experience as a subfield developed from studies of taste and judgment and now extends to sophisticated analyses of materiality and material encounters, cultural consumption, and iconicity. As this critical bibliography suggests, there is no single domain within sociology for the study of art. Sociology of art permits a diverse range of methodological and empirical approaches to the relationship between societies and cultural objects. Key works are summarized, from classic studies and foundational theoretical treatments to new sociological approaches to music, artworks, performance, iconicity, and perception.

Georg Simmel has long been appreciated as a major theorist of the arts in society, as well as of aesthetic phenomena in general in social life. Yet Simmel's essays in the area have remained dispersed for many years across the disparate parts of his corpus and have not been easy to survey in their full thematic cohesion and interconnection.
