Family Drama Movie Review: A delectable dark comedy

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).

Morality is a tough nut to crack. When overdone, the story feels preachy, and when under-explored, the film feels insensitive. Here’s Family Drama that doesn’t spend a moment pondering on the ‘correctness’ of the story, with the storyteller not also justifying the morbid actions of its miscreant characters. The situations the writing puts these characters in are dark, and yet, the mood is wickedly humorous. This balance, or should I say, this battle of tone, makes Family Drama , written by Shanmukha Prashant and Meher Tej, a thoroughly compelling film.

The title is fitting, for the crooked dynamics of a family are central to this grotesque premise. When the stringent patriarch of the family threatens to oust his younger, unemployed son, Laxman (Teja Kasarapu) and his new wife, Yamini (Pooja Kiran), were he to fail to procure a job, the son has to come up with an idea to keep a roof over his head. With advice and help from his elder visibly wicked, stoner stepbrother, Rama ( Suhas ), Lakshman convinces his mother, who has been bearing the brunt of an abusive marriage, to poison the father into having him be paralysed forever. The father gets stripped of his motor actions and authority, but this is just the beginning of the film. This morbid opening serves as a preamble to this dark comedy and giving out anything more about the plot would hinder the viewing experience because this film is all about unpleasant surprises and hilarious violence. 

The film has only six major characters and that helps keep the narrative tight. The need for secrecy and the threat of divulgence with horrifying ramifications, lingers even in the simplest conversations. In fact, much of the screenplay is about these characters trying to share their secrets despite knowing that doing so poses danger. When a film succeeds in creating tension out of the smallest actions, you can see it’s a product of effective writing. Barring Yamini and Rama’s wife Mahati (Anusha Nuthula), the outsiders, the rest of this family—the father, mother, and the two sons—are all bad people. I liked that the film blurs moral barriers. Throats are slit, innocents are murdered, and even the father’s helplessness is mocked. In fact, some of the funniest moments in the film have the father helplessly gnaw at the chaos unfolding in front of his eyes. The scene where Rama mocks his father’s ailment is, of course, insensitive, but watched in the context of this film, it makes you laugh. So is the scene where an uninvited guest finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time towards the film’s ending. You know that a cruel death is imminent, and the scene has an eerie vibe to it, but the idea itself is so outrageous and silly that you can't help but buy it. 

Most of the film’s likeableness emanates from the presence and performance of Suhas, who is terrific in handling the unpredictability and volatility of his character. Backed by great writing, the Colour Photo -actor makes you root for a callous character. He can get cloying and yet be menacing. A shot where he appears in the darkness just after the characters make a discovery sends a chill down the spine. Is this film loud in places? Sure, but that’s how Suhas’ character is, and he sells it. Even when he is not on the screen, you are seeking him potentially eavesdropping on others. I wish I could praise the other actors as much, but they are functional at best. Teja Kasarapu as Lakshman is perhaps the weakest link in this film. Pooja Kiran and Anusha Nuthula, too, seem to merely exist in this madhouse. I liked though that all these characters get closure.

It’s rarely that you get a simple, contained, innovative Family Drama , and when it manages to double up as a dark comedy as well, it’s more than you can bargain for.

Story Review

Sadashiva Rao (Sanjay Ratha) earns the reputation of a good person in the office with his colleagues but he gives immense torture to his wife Parvathi (Shruti Meher) and sons Rama (Suhas) and Lakshman (Teja Kasarapu). One son Rama runs away unable to bear his torture. Sadashiva Rao's dictatorial ways force them to take a shocking decision aided and supported by Lakshman's wife Yamini (Pooja Kiran) and Rama's wife Mahati (Anusha Noothula). To the top of it, they are haunted by the mysterious killings in the city by a psychopath in the city. Where this will lead should be found out on screen.

Artists, Technicians Review

Director Meher Tej on debut came with a different genre of a crime thriller. Though the narration is slow, he did not deviate from the main point keeping the interest of the viewers intact. He highlighted the family's emotions, feelings and how the relations change conveniently according to the situation to meet their selfish deeds. He dared to be different and portrayed all the characters having one or the other faults and this may come as something surprising to the viewers.

His story is different and the screenplay and direction are to the point. However, with the raw elements, unpredictable nature and narration, and characters changing their intentions in a jiffy may find it difficult for the viewers to connect with. Director made clear that no one is a saint and it is like a devil chanting holy verses.  Director elevated Suhas' character more than the others. but he gave equal importance to all. Dialogues are good. He has taken a good time to get into the story and gave importance to the introduction of characters and their traits. The narration is the slow pace and the real story starts after an hour. During the interval, interest increases but into the second half, once again repetitive scenes and routine elements drag the narration. The climax surprises all but could have been executed in a better manner.

Suhas stole the show showcasing his acting talent. He with his expressions and emotions, dialogue delivery, mannerisms made an impact. Teja Kasarapu as his brother also did well. Pooja Kiran and Anushka Nutula performed well as the female leads. Shruti Meher and Sanjay Ratha though got very few dialogues made a powerful impact. But Shruti at times overdid her part.

Ajay and Sanjay's music is good and they elevated the scenes with their background score taking viewers to another level giving them the thrilling kick. Venkat R Sakhamuri's cinematography is good and gave a realistic feel to the entire story. However, he could have done even better to make an impact. The editing of Rama Krishna Arram is quite good. Production values are good.

Meher Tej on debut came with a crime thriller titling it in a different manner as Family Drama. Unlike other psycho thrillers involving psychopaths, he chose a completely different setup and backdrop. He emerged successful for most of the time but showcasing the entire family as villains may not connect chords with the viewers leaving them with a mixed feeling. Considering all these aspects, CJ goes with a 2 rating for Family Drama.

Meher Tej is the writer and director of the 2021 Indian Telugu-language Neo-noir film Family Drama. Mango Mass Media, Noothana Bharathi Films, and Chashma Films are the film’s producers. It debuted on the streaming site SonyLIV on October 29, 2021, and stars Suhas and Teja Kasarapu.

Sanjay Ratha’s character Sadashiva Rao frequently beats his newlywed younger son Lakshman (Teja Kasarapu) and abuses his wife Parvathi (Shruti Meher). Rama (Suhas), Lakshman’s older paternal half-brother, is a serial killer who was exiled from the family due to his unemployment. When Lakshman’s father’s toxic behavior gets too much for him to handle, he conspires with Rama to do something dangerous. The remainder of the film is what happens next.

Family Star review: Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur’s family drama tests your patience

Family star review: parasuram petla’s vijay deverakonda, mrunal thakur-starrer defies logic in a plot that’s already wafer-thin..

Family Star review: When it was announced that Vijay Deverakonda was teaming up with director Parasuram Petla for the second time, many hoped they would recreate the magic of Geetha Govindam (2018). That film had its own issues, but Family Star struggles to make a mark or even entertain. The Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur-starrer tests your patience, with things only going downhill as the film progresses. Family Star story

Govardhan Rao ( Vijay ) carries a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders. He might have two older brothers (Raja Chembolu, Ravi Prakash) and a grandmother (Rohini Hattangadi) but he takes it upon himself to run the family, despite being the youngest. He is careful with the family’s finances, constantly reiterating how many kashtalu (problems) he has. When Indu (Mrunal) rents a portion of his home, she changes his life in more ways than one.

The plot of Family Star is so wafer-thin; you can see through it like one of the CGI dosas Govardhan makes for his nieces and nephews early on in the film. But even within the realm of what it is, Parasuram’s film defies logic, making it difficult to sit through. Even worse, it almost feels like Family Star was written by someone who doesn’t know what living a middle-class life is like, making the whole attempt feel caricaturish.

The biggest issue Family Star suffers from is a lack of emotional depth. Everything in the film feels superficial. You don’t feel anything for the lead characters, let alone the supporting ones, with no proper explanation for their motivations.

The supposedly responsible Govardhan often lets out his inner man-child, yet you never understand why those around him put up with any of it. Indu also hides something from Govardhan, but the big reveals (yes, plural) involving her character, come across as plain silly. And the less said about the friction between Govardhan and one of his brothers, the better.

The chemistry

While the core point of Family Star is Govardhan’s pursuit of giving his family a better life, a lot of the film also hinges on his love for Indu and vice-versa. And yet, Vijay and Mrunal hardly have any chemistry, except in a few scenes. That’s not their fault though because Parasuram doesn’t give them space to breathe or a chance to flourish. 

He instead chooses to focus on scenes that are meant to be funny, but the jokes don’t really land. There’s an unnecessary scene where Govardhan is mistaken for a prostitute which is played for gags, but all it does is make you cringe. So does his behaviour at the work place. This is why it’s ironic that the infamous ‘iron ee vanchala enti’ (do I need to bend the iron) fight scene unintentionally make you laugh.

Vijay and Mrunal

The only thing Family Star has going for it is Vijay and Mrunal ’s performances. Have we seen better performances from Vijay? Sure. But he’s earnest in playing Govardhan. So much so, that the character’s idiosyncrasies get on your nerves because he plays them so well. He stands out in the film's few emotional scenes, where his character is allowed to feel the hurt, instead of just anger. 

Mrunal looks stunning as Indu and tries to give her best, but her lip-sync is so off in the film, that it distracts you from her performance. She gets an emotional monologue at the end, but all you can see is how the words don’t match her lip movement.

In conclusion

Family Star could’ve been a simple, earnest film about a man taking up the responsibility of a massive family and finding love. We could’ve also gotten a film where the protagonist is content with his circumstances till he’s forced to face reality. Instead, you get a film that feels stretched, filled with ridiculous plot points and speeches that make you feel like you're in a time warp. Overall, it’s a shame that Vijay, Mrunal and a cast featuring names like Rohini, Jagapathi Babu, Vasuki and Abhinaya were wasted in a film as middling as this one.

Vijay Deverakonda’s latest film, The Family Star, was initially released in theaters in April 2024 but did not achieve the expected success. However, its performance on the OTT space is positive.

Directed by Parasuram Petla, The Family Star was first available on Amazon Prime Video in Telugu and Tamil. It is now also available in Kannada and Malayalam, broadening its audience nationwide.

The film stars Mrunal Thakur as the female lead, with Jagapathi Babu, Abhinaya, Vennela Kishore, and others in key roles. Dil Raju produced the movie, which featured music by Gopi Sundar. Stay tuned for more OTT updates.

Popular comedian Getup Srinu has turned a hero for the movie Raju Yadav. The movie directed by Krishnamachary has Ankitha Kharat as the female lead. Let’s see how the film is.

Raju Yadav (Getup Srinu) hailing from Mahabubnagar gets hit by a cricket ball which turns his life upside down. This leads to a facial disorder which makes Raju Yadav smile all the time. Doctors advise Raju to undergo a surgery but his family can’t afford the treatment. While nothing is going right in Raju’s life, he sees Sweety (Ankitha Kharat) one day and falls for her instantly. How Sweety changed Raju’s life forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Raju Yadav’s character demands the protagonist to maintain the same facial expression throughout the movie whatever the situation is. This is indeed a tough task but Getup Srinu gave a commendable performance in this romantic drama. The actor tried to lift the film in many scenes even when the writing isn’t strong.

Some fun scenes featuring Getup Srinu and his friends evoke laughs. Ananda Chakrapani who played hero’s father did a good job and the emotional moments featuring him and Getup Srinu over the end are satisfactory.

Minus Points:

Raju Yadav’s core idea is interesting, but the same cannot be said about the screenplay. The writing team failed to convert the interesting idea into a rollercoaster ride. Most part of the film is boring with poorly written scenes that hardly make any mpact.

The heroine’s characterisation in Raju Yadav has a striking resemblance to the female lead roles in few blockbuster movies, that stirred a discussion among the public. Hence there is nothing exciting in the proceedings and it isn’t tough to guess where the movie is heading. Though Ankitha Kharat did a good job, we can’t connect to her role due to the familiar plot line.

The similarity with other movies isn’t the whole issue. Except for the climax portions, Raju Yadav lacks emotional depth and there are many boring moments throughout the runtime. The editing is below par as many scenes test the patience levels.

Technical Aspects:

Harshavardhan Rameshwar’s songs are passable. The background score by Suresh Bobbili is just okay. The cinematography by Sai Ram is fine and the production values are decent.

Direction by Krishnamachary is below par. The makers applied the tried and tested formula, but the writing doesn’t hit the right note. The movie also doesn’t have clarity and there is inconsistency in the hero’s behaviour.

On the whole, Raju Yadav is a tedious romantic drama with a plot line which is being overused lately. Getup Srinu is pretty good in his portrayal and a handful of fun scenes work. But the rest of the movie is very boring and there is lack of consistency in the proceedings. Hence Raju Yadav ends up being a disappointing watch.

‘The Atypical Family,’ a K-drama starring Jang Ki-yong and Chun Woo-hee, is a refreshing yet profound exploration of a family burdened by the dual weights of superpowers and modern-day maladies. This series, starring Jang Ki-yong as the male lead Bok Gwi-ju, and Chun Woo-hee as the female lead Do Da-hee, delves deep into the intersection of the extraordinary and the mundane, offering viewers a unique narrative that blends fantastical elements with real-world issues.

Bok Gwi-ju, portrayed by Jang Ki-yong, is a character trapped in a cycle of alcoholism, struggling to cope with the grief of his wife’s death. His performance is a poignant depiction of sorrow and resilience, making his character both relatable and compelling. Gwi-ju’s battle with alcoholism, which renders his superpowers ineffective, is a powerful metaphor for how personal demons can strip us of our innate strengths.

Chun Woo-hee’s Do Da-hee enters as a beacon of hope, or so believes the family matriarch, Man-heum, played with grace by Go Doo-shim. Man-heum is convinced that Da-hee can help the family regain their lost powers. However, Da-hee is far from a conventional saviour. Her character is layered with complexities and contradictions, embodying the title’s promise of atypicality. Woo-hee’s portrayal is exceptional, navigating Da-hee’s internal conflicts and moral ambiguities with finesse. While some viewers might find Da-hee’s personality off-putting, Woo-hee’s nuanced performance brings depth to the character, making her more than just a plot device.

The narrative of 'The Atypical Family' is adept at addressing a myriad of issues, both mental and physical. Each family member's superpower is juxtaposed with a modern ailment, reflecting how contemporary life can erode even the most extraordinary abilities. Introversion, insomnia, obesity, and alcoholism are depicted not just as individual challenges but as collective hurdles that the family must overcome together. The drama does not shy away from portraying these issues with sensitivity and realism, making it a resonant piece for many viewers.
