Due to the mass amounts of unsustainable, human-generated waste entering our environment, the detrimental effects of pollution have continued to negatively impact numerous ecosystems around the world. Different types of waste, such as microplastics, are continuously polluting our oceans and landfills due to the lack of biodegradable and recyclable materials within these pollutants. A recent study found that out of the  400 million  metric tons of plastic waste produced annually, only  9%  is successfully recycled. (Find out  more about plastic pollution  and how you can help  reduce your own waste .) In 2017, for instance, the Environmental Protection Agency calculated the United States’s total generation of solid waste to be around  267.8 million tons , ultimately representing a  5.7 million  waste increase since 2015. All together, unsustainable waste has negatively impacted the environment through its contribution to worsening the climate crisis, wildlife population, and our very own public health. 

Climate Change

The way our society disposes of waste is not only extremely troubling, but has become increasingly irresponsible as well. Our government leaders have failed to implement sustainable foundations into action to allow our environment to successfully mitigate and adapt to climate change. For example, when looking at the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions and landfills, researchers found that  20%  of the total human-driven methane emissions have been produced from waste landfills, and  91% of these landfill methane emissions  have been caused by open-trash incineration. Considering that approximately  65%  of the United State’s waste is being discarded in this manner, the crucial lack of sustainable government regulations and involvement on the waste disposal process continues to contribute large-scale risks to both our atmosphere and the people that live near these burning sites.

Ecosystems vary widely from location to location. However, one of the most dire consequences of our global waste problem manifests itself in relation to our marine life and waterways. In other words, human-generated waste affects mass amounts of aquatic beings that are dependent on the ocean for their livelihood. Numerous marine species consume mass amounts of plastic or solid waste due to their inability to distinguish between food and waste and are continuing to have traces of pollutants within their body. Researchers have found  microplastics  in 100% of turtles, 59% of whales, 36% in seals, and even 90% in seabirds they examined. Not to mention, waste pollution is often deadly, resulting in over  100,000  marine mammals to be killed annually. When it comes to biodiversity, our waste problem is severely plaguing the health of the world’s species.

Public Health

Human health is at risk through our lack of environmental awareness and action. If our society continues to produce large amounts of trash without proper disposal, it will be the downfall of humanity, wildlife and ecosystem well-being. We cannot prevent or promote longevity if humankind does not adapt sustainable behaviors toward our Earth. If emissions from waste disposal continue to increase, climate will not only be negatively impacted, but human health as well. Through environmental contamination, one can develop  diseases , such as asthma, birth defects, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and more. These issues will continue to increase if environmental action is not established in the near future.

Waste Management or disposal includes processing and disposing of Waste starting right from its point of inception to complete disposal. Waste can be solid or liquid and sometimes even gas. Recycle, Reduce, Re-use

The three R’s of Waste Management, i.e., Reduce reuse and Recycle should be followed at every place possible. These methods of Waste Management are mostly environment friendly and help avoid resorting to Waste Management measures like landfill and incineration that are harmful to humans as well as the environment.

There are numerous benefits of recycling. Recycling helps recover resources that can be used to make use of them in a different way. New products can be made by recycling general Waste. Solid Wastes like wood, glass, plastic, electronic devices, clothing and leather items can be Recycled. 

Wastes that are organic in nature can be Recycled and reused, often as manure or fertilizer for agriculture by the method of decomposition. Food scraps, plant products (such as cow dung) and carcasses, paper products are the most reusable for making manure.

Some Waste items that contain plastic such as polythene bags, bottles, pipes, etc. don't decompose easily and can pile up as a landfill for many years, sometimes ending up in the ocean and killing animals who choke on them accidentally. The use of such products that are harmful to everyone should be Reduced. Have you ever been curious about how is the garbage disposed off? Or are we so busy in our own world that we do not think about such small but essential thing of our day to day life.

In our routine schedule, there are at least a few things like rough or waste papers, the fruit peel if we eat a fruit, etc. which need to be disposed off as we cannot carry them with us wherever we go, can we?

But do we ever give it a thought as to how this waste is being disposed off or where this waste goes?

Hardly a few people give it a thought but there are also some of us who don’t even care before throwing away the waste on the road or just throw it away out of the window, not caring if it is falling on some passerby walking down the street.

The situation if imagined sounds very funny but this also brings forward a serious issue whether the waste is getting disposed properly or what is the process of waste (sewage) treatment before disposing it or are we ourselves causing pollution?

Is it really necessary to think about Waste Disposal?

Yes, of course, it is necessary to think about waste disposal procedure after all we are the one producing such waste. We have seen two different dustbins given by the municipal corporation to each and every society.

These dustbins are primarily for the purpose of separating the dry and the wet waste.

Dry waste will include all the waste papers, cardboard papers, plastic bags, or any other polythene containing material, nylon materials, electronic waste, etc.

Wet waste basically involves all the waste generated in the kitchen i.e. the vegetable and fruit peels, used tea bags, egg shells, used flowers, etc.

The separation of these waste products is very important as there are different treatment techniques which the products undergo and these techniques vary on the basis of the waste type.

For example, the biodegradable waste can be buried in the soil with proper treatment as used to generate “ biogas ” .

What is Waste Disposal?

Waste disposal is also known as waste management. Waste disposal simply means recycling the waste matter for the purpose of reusing it.

This procedure has the main objective of reducing the use of our depleting natural resources . For example, the paper which we throw away as waste is recycled and reused to avoid the deforestation (as wood is a major component of paper).

The classification of wet and dry waste is not the only one classification. There are also other types of waste materials classified based on their hazardous nature.

Some of them are biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable waste, nuclear or radioactive waste, electronic or computer waste, industrial waste which is further divided based on what the industry manufactures, etc.

There are different techniques for recycling different types of waste.

Biodegradable waste is a kind of waste which decomposes in the soil naturally, for example, dry leaves, wet waste, paper, etc.

This waste is dumped in the environment or buried in the ground (soil). Here, the micro-organisms act on the waste resulting in natural decomposition.

The procedure of waste disposal means collecting, transporting and disposing the waste based on the guidelines of recycling.

The major objective of recycling these waste products is to reduce their adverse effects on the environment if left untreated.

Is proper Disposal of Waste Important?

Proper waste disposal is very much important because if we do not dispose the waste properly, it is going to be hazardous to us.

We clean our house every day to keep it clean and maintain a healthy environment. Similarly, it is equally important to keep our environment clean and healthy which can be done by managing the waste properly that is separating the different types of waste and treating it accordingly.

As we already know that waste treatment technique varies as per the type of waste. The best example of the necessity to proper waste management treatment is the example of non-biodegradable waste.

Non-biodegradable waste consists of a vast variety of waste materials like plastic, electronic waste, nuclear waste.

This type of waste material requires different type of treatment as these waste materials do no decompose on their own when buried in the soil.

These waste products in turn damage the soil fertility and the nuclear waste also generates some radiation which is hazardous to the living organisms in its environment.

This itself explains the need of proper waste treatment and it can also be called as recycling or reducing the waste thus, reducing its hazardous properties.

Adverse Effects of Untreated Waste Products

It is estimated that more than 1 lakh tons of waste is generated in India from which a question about its management and treatment arises.

How does so much of waste get treated regularly or if does all the waste get treated or some is left untreated, thus contributing to environmental pollution?

Every day the municipal waste collector van comes in most of the residential areas to collect the garbage.

This garbage is mostly household garbage which will contain mostly biodegradable waste and also some plastic waste. Maximum of this can be recycled and reused.

The problem arises when the industrial or chemical waste is generated. The chemical producing industry will generate all the chemical waste which will include all inorganic, organic, metallic components which are mostly non-biodegradable and hazardous to the human body.

This waste will cause a problem if it is left in the environment untreated due to its hazardous effect.

The environment in which this garbage is dumped will be polluted. If it is dumped in a water body, the aquatic life will be adversely affected.

It is also commonly heard that industries letting out their chemical wastes (oil in nature or heavy metal chemicals) in the surrounding rivers affects the sensitive aquatic life and also due to the smoke coming out of the chimneys of the industries causes pollution, affecting the birds.

Moreover, the chemicals let out in the water body will form a layer over the water surface, which will not allow the fishes to breathe, thus killing them.

Also in some cases, the fishes ingest the waste materials which in turn are ingested by the human beings thus, harming the entire ecosystem.

For example, the Minamata disease in Japan where mercury metal was dumped in the river and this mercury was ingested by the fishes which were in turn ingested by human beings and then suffering from mercury poisoning.

Another example of adverse effects of improper waste disposal is of the Ganges-Brahmaputra river basin which is highly polluted due to the heavy metal waste (lead, arsenic, mercury, etc.)  that is dumped into it by the surrounding industries which in turn affects the people residing in the surrounding area.

There are a thousand of such cases in India as well as other countries which show that even when there are so many waste disposal techniques improving day by day, no one is actually implementing them to recycle their own waste therefore, creating the present day situation of our polluted environment.

Garbage Pollution Research Paper

Human activities are largely attributed to the loss of the planet’s biodiversity. The impact of man on the environment is so enormous since he has facilitated the rate of species extinction a thousand to ten thousand times the normal rate (Derraik, 2002). The extinction of marine life for instance, has been accelerated by waste debris and the global climatic variations.

The twenty first century has been marked by a dramatic technological advancement that has uplifted the standard of living. However, this has also come with a great cost since the materials produced are difficult to dispose without affecting the environment. Plastic bags, household garbage and electronic waste are such products, which have posed a great risk to the environment since the means of disposing them is difficult (Derraik, 2002).

Thesis : Garbage remains are a burning problem that we have to face today. It is close to everyone who lives in the world because we product trash every day. In most of the world, we do one of two things with our ordinary garbage: burn it or bury it. Neither one is good for us or for the environment. Burning garbage in incinerators releases dangerous gases and dust which contribute to global warming and pollute lakes, forests. How to reduce the garbage remains become a big issue for everyone.

Typical house hold waste contains papers, cardboards, chlorine-bleached plastics, foils, food scraps and batteries (EPA, 2011). Averagely, in the U.S, a single person can produce 3.72 pounds garbage daily, where 40% of 50 million people living in the non-metropolitan region of the nation are estimated to burn their waste (backyard burning), while 63% of the total daily garbage is incinerated in burn barrels. As a result, more than 1.8 billion pounds of garbage from household is incinerated in burn barrels annually (MDEQ, 2005).

According to Hill (2010 p.345), more than ‘500 billion one-time-use plastic bags’ are used annually in the world and end up being littered ubiquitously to comprise waste/misuse. At the same time, plastics are non-biodegradable and burying them only destroys the ecosystem, posing a hazard to marine ecosystems. Plastics are polymeric, highly non-biodegradable and persist for a long time in the natural environments (Hill, 2010).

Electronic wastes/e-waste comprises of discarded electronic appliances such as computers, phones, TV, and fringes. These are hazardous when improperly disposed in landfills or when incinerated. For instance, the Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) present in televisions contains phosphors and lead that contaminates the land and water if improperly disposed, or when there is transfer of the ash from the incinerators. Such landfills contaminate the surrounding soil which in turn contaminates the underground water (MDEQ, 2005).

Plastics are derivatives of fossils fuels with varied chemical properties hence, complicating the recycling process. Therefore, burning garbage particularly the ones containing plastics, pollute the atmosphere through emission of toxic gases. Many have volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) such as chlorine/bromine that are released on burning and destroy the ozone layer.

Carbon dioxide and monoxide released from burning organic matter also accumulates in the atmosphere. Ultimately, they deplete the ozone layer resulting to global warming, which is the chief facilitator of climate change (MDEQ, 2005).

PVC in particular, releases dioxin upon burning. Dioxin is an organic chemical, which has detrimental health effects when inhaled since they are carcinogenic and bio-accumulative. Incineration emits flue gas that contains hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) such as carbon monoxide and dioxide, nitrogen oxides, benzene, styrene, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), furans as well as heavy metals like lead, arsenic and mercury, which significantly pollute the environment (MDEQ, 2005).

Burn barrels release smoke containing hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde, which irritates the respiratory system and eyes. Formaldehyde is present in pressed wood and paints. On the other hand, bleached papers and plastics contain chlorine, which releases dioxins when combusted with other garbage at minimal temperatures.

Dioxins cause cancer, immune system dysfunction and birth defects (EPA, 2011). On the same note, statistics from 2002 to 2004 indicates that backyard and barrel burning comprised 57% of the source of furans and dioxins (U.S. Department of Health, 2011; EPA, 2011).

More so, combusting garbage with synthetic materials emits heavy metals that are carcinogenic and implicated with some birth defects. Combusting polystyrene polymers present in foam cups and plastic packaging produce styrene gas that can pass through skin as well as lungs and mucous membranes to cause damage to the central nervous system (U.S. Department of Health, 2011).

Some plastics and electronic wastes go ahead to breakdown into simpler toxic products that pollute the underground as well as the running water when buried or left to litter in dumpsites. After incineration of electronic wastes and plastics, the ashes finally find their way in rivers and lakes thus posing a hazard to marine life.

Mercury, dioxins, Furans and PCBs bioaccumulate in the ecosystem and therefore, they are transferred through the food chain. When plastics pile together due to poor disposal, they clog drainages and sewers leading to floods, where mosquitoes and other pathogens breed causing poor sanitation with serious health implications (Derraik, 2002).

The ash from incinerators may contain hazardous products, which when buried or placed in the landfills, contaminate the soil. Mostly, they contain heavy metals most of which are carcinogenic e.g. cadmium, lead mercury from batteries as well as chromium and arsenic from treated wood. These accumulate in plants or contaminate ground and running water.

Garbage debris moves to the oceans, killing the marine life such as zooplankton and marine turtles. Garbage discarded in beaches and from ships into the waterways or through fishing nets could ultimately be eaten by marine life, obscuring their digestive systems. Some are strangled, entangled or trapped by the debris causing the organisms to drown/starve, become exposed to predators or unable to hunt their prey.

These are some of deleterious impacts of marine debris facilitated by garbage littering, which jeopardize the existence of these organisms (Derraik, 2002). The ingested plastics also contain polychlorinated biphenyls that are hazardous to invader species. Moreover, the marine ecosystems also face the danger of hypoxia/anoxia, due to garbage debris that imbalance its usual functioning (Derraik, 2002).

Battery Recycling : The Hidden Danger: Li-ion Batteries as Fire Hazards in Waste Management Facilities

In an age dominated by portable electronics and electric vehicles, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have become ubiquitous. These powerhouses of energy storage have revolutionised our daily lives, offering efficient, rechargeable energy solutions. However, their widespread use comes with a hidden danger, especially when improperly disposed of in waste management facilities.

When damaged, overcharged, or exposed to extreme temperatures, Li-ion batteries can undergo thermal runaway—a chain reaction where the battery overheats, leading to the release of flammable electrolytes and potentially causing a fire or explosion. In the controlled environment of a device, safety mechanisms help mitigate these risks. However, once discarded and mixed with other waste materials in landfills or recycling facilities, these safety measures are often compromised. The fire departments in New York and San Francisco alone report over 669 such incidents combined since 2019.

Improperly discharged batteries

The main problem here is obviously the incorrect dispose of the batteries. Waste management facilities are generally not equipped to handle the unique hazards posed by Li-ion batteries. When batteries are improperly discarded and end up in waste streams, they can come into contact with other metallic objects, causing short circuits and sparking fires. The volatile nature of Li-ion battery fires makes them difficult to extinguish and can lead to catastrophic consequences, including property damage, environmental pollution, and even injury or loss of life.

Moreover, the recycling process for electronic waste (e-waste) presents its own set of challenges. Li-ion batteries are often not properly segregated from other materials during recycling, increasing the risk of thermal events. The mechanical shredding and sorting procedures used in recycling facilities can further exacerbate these dangers by puncturing batteries and triggering thermal runaway.

The most effective form of risk mitigation is eliminating the hazard, as Gregory Maines, Lead Engineer at Jensen Hughes, an expert in safety, security and risk-based engineering and consulting, says: "Consumers must be provided with a convenient alternative for their e-waste disposal and be aware that this alternative exists in order to change their behaviour. E-waste disposal programs which incur charges to the consumer at the point of disposal or require transportation to a depot are a disincentive to proper disposal, which is being recognised in the development of extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs that require producers to consider the costs of disposal and share some of these costs in their up-front pricing." More and more countries implement EPR policies giving manufacturers a financial incentive to make their products easier and safer to dispose of at the end of their lifecycle and to work proactively with the waste management industry to achieve these goals. EPR regulations for Li-ion batteries have been adopted in New York and California and are being developed by the European Union for implementation in 2025. "In the long term, these regulations should reduce improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries to ensure that processing and recycling occur at facilities designed for this hazard," says Gregory Maines.

How to deal with the fire hazard?

But as long as not all batteries end up in the correct waste management plant, especially material recovery facilities (MRF) have to deal with improperly discarded Li-ion batteries. "Material recovery facilities appear to be the most heavily affected, in part due to a widespread mistaken belief among consumers that lithium-ion batteries are recyclable as part of typical household collection programs and the additional processing steps that occur at these facilities,", explains Greogry Maines. Contrary to "conventional" fires at waste management plants - plastics or cellulosic, can be difficult to ignite and may encounter a prolonged period of smouldering prior to the outbreak of a flaming fire - the intensity of lithium-ion battery fires can accelerate the ignition of other materials, giving facility operators less time to respond before a fire grows beyond their ability to control.

Therefore employees must be provided with training to identify hazardous materials of all kinds and appropriately respond to observations of these materials during all stages of the waste management cycle, Mr Maines explains: "Fire growth potential is dictated by several factors, but the primary considerations are the heat of combustion and exposure to oxygen in the air. The heat of combustion is the net amount of energy released by a fuel source; this is generally highest for plastics and cellulosic and can be reduced with increasing moisture content. Management of pile size, composition, and moisture content must consider the potential for fires, particularly at intake facilities and when processing waste streams into segregated piles of materials with high fire growth potential. In this context, lithium-ion batteries should be considered as an ignition source, while the fire growth potential of the surrounding waste pile is what defines the upper-limit consequence of ignition."

Remaining vigilant and segregating materials is a labour-intensive process. "One interesting area of development is the integration of machine learning algorithms (often termed "AI") to identify and reject hazardous materials from waste streams," Gregory Maines says. "While these solutions are not yet in widespread use, they may one day allow a much smaller team of facility operators to supervise the robots in doing the tedious work of watching the waste stream and separating high-risk materials for special processing."

Specialised fire suppression systems and advanced technologies

For facilities that are not intended to handle Li-ion batteries, passive fire management practices along with active systems designed to mitigate fire growth in surrounding combustible materials are generally sufficient. But of course, not only MRFs have to be aware of the fire hazard. Facilities that are intended to handle Li-ion batteries and other potentially hazardous wastes, specialised protection systems play an important role in the overall protection scheme. "Automatic detection devices including heat, smoke, spark, or flame detectors can be used to notify facility operators of incipient fire events or shut down equipment to prevent the spread of burning materials through a facility prior to emergency response actions. These detection devices can also be used as the initiating devices for integrated fire protection systems to suppress fire growth," Gregory Maines says.

In conclusion, addressing the fire hazard posed by Li-ion batteries in waste management facilities requires a multi-faceted approach. Public awareness campaigns are essential to educate consumers about the proper disposal methods for batteries and the importance of recycling e-waste responsibly. Enhanced collection systems, such as designated drop-off locations for hazardous materials, can help prevent batteries from entering the waste stream. Additionally, investment in advanced sorting and recycling technologies that can safely handle Li-ion batteries is crucial for mitigating risks within recycling facilities.

Furthermore, industry standards and regulations must be updated to reflect the growing prevalence of Li-ion batteries in consumer products and the unique hazards they pose. Manufacturers should be incentivised to design products with easier battery removal and recycling in mind, reducing the likelihood of batteries being improperly disposed of in the first place.

How to Clean Your Garbage Disposal in Under 20 Minutes

A s much as we'd like to believe that a garbage disposal is self-cleaning, the machine requires routine upkeep just like any other household appliance. Between wiping countertops and mopping the floors, among other kitchen chores , it's easy to let your garbage disposal fall to the wayside. But considering its frequent usage, it only makes sense that a garbage disposal would get the same amount of love and attention as, say, your stainless steel sink .

Did you know that a garbage disposal should be cleaned every 10 to 12 days - or weekly, if used daily? While a disposal doesn't require tons of maintenance, it also doesn't take much for the contraption to succumb to built-up grime and stinky odors. Moreover, ignoring garbage disposal cleaning can result in dull blades, and consequently, an increase in bacteria growth and weird smells.

Fortunately, how to clean a garbage disposal is a fairly easy task that can be completed in 20 minutes or less. We researched the best garbage disposal cleaning products and at-home remedies that will get the machine spick and span.

How to Clean a Garbage Disposal

Before you even think about touching the garbage disposal, empty your sink so it's bare naked. Clean any dirty dishes that may have accumulated throughout the day, and if you have a sink strainer, you'll want to remove that as well.

Now that you have an empty workstation, you can clean the splash guard (the black rubber safety barrier), which helps prevent utensils from falling down the drain, and conversely, blocks water and food particles from flying out when the disposal is in use. (Before beginning, ensure the appliance is off.) To clean, apply a liberal amount of dish soap to the abrasive side of a sponge and scrub the underside of the guard. Rinse and repeat until no more food comes off.

Once squeaky clean, turn the appliance back on. Then, try one of the garbage disposal cleaning methods below.

How to Clean a Garbage Disposal With Ice

If you're short on time (or just feeling lazy), one of the easiest and most effective ways to clean a garbage disposal is with ice and a generous amount of salt. Simply, dump two handfuls of ice into the garbage disposal followed by one cup of salt - table salt will do, but if you have rock salt that's even better!

Turn the sink tap on so that cold water is flowing, and flip on the disposal until the ice is gone. The ice helps loosen and break down food remnants, while also sharpening the blades. Salt, meanwhile, is a natural deodorizer.

Tip: if you want to get extra fancy, you can make ice cubes using vinegar and citrus peels (oranges, lemons, and limes), which won't only sterilize a garbage disposal, but leave it smelling super fresh. In this instance, the vinegar replaces the salt.

How to Clean a Garbage Disposal With Baking Soda and Vinegar

Alternatively, you can also clean a garbage disposal with baking soda and vinegar. Start by distributing a half-cup of baking soda into the chute, and then steadily pour one cup of vinegar. Take a 10-minute dance break while the solution gets to work dissolving built-up grime. While running the garbage disposal, flush out the solution with hot water.

If you go this route, tossing an arrangement of citrus peels can be added to help with eliminating lingering odors.

The Best Garbage Disposal Cleaners

If you don't feel like cleaning by hand, however, we recommend two inexpensive yet durable garbage disposal cleaners that will also get the job done.
