Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil film Junga, which released back in 2018 is dubbed and released in Telugu now. The dubbed version is titled Vikramarkudu and here is our review of the film.
Junga (Vijay Sethupathi) works as a ticket collector in a local bus service. After coming to know that his father and grandfather were gangsters, he sets out on a journey to become a gangster himself. The challenges he faces in the process and the backstory behind his transformation form the remaining plot.
Plus Points:
Vijay Sethupathi is one of the acclaimed actors in South Indian cinema and he excels as a witty bus conductor and also as an unconventional gangster. The comedy he generates with his comic timing is impeccable.
The second half is comparatively better than the opening half. The protagonist’s adventures in Paris underworld which take the centre stage in the latter half are partly engaging.
Minus Points:
The problem with the Vijay Sethupathi starrer is that it doesn’t appeal to the Telugu audiences. It has too much Tamil flavour which doesn’t suit the sensibilities of native viewers. The slapstick comedy turns monotonous beyond a point.
Scenes that should have been narrated on a serious note are presented in a comical manner and that takes a toll on the narrative. The conflict point is silly and so is the story surrounding it.
Telugu dubbing is okayish. But the dubbed songs and their lyrics are very poor. Moreover, the title has nothing to do with the theme of the film. Vikramarkudu has a powerful ring to it but this film is a comedy drama.
Technical Finesse:
The story penned by the director Gokul has a hint of freshness but his comical approach plays spoilsport. The core conflict is way too silly. The dubbing work for the songs is of very poor quality. Cinematography is neat.
Vikramarkudu is a silly comedy drama powered by a fine performance from Vijay Sethupathi. The comedy works in parts but the slapstick turns monotonous after a point. The film has its share of bright moments here and there but as a whole, it doesn’t make for a compelling watch. You might give it a try if you have way too much time to spare. 123telugu.com Rating : 2.75/5

the best part of the movie is undoubtedly the eve-teasing gang near the railway station when Ravi Teja aka Vikram Rathode's seriousness was brought out. He smiles in front of his daughter and changes his emotion suddenly after making her sit in the car. Keeravani was bang-on with the BGM. Of course SS Rajamouli was outstanding.

ravi teja was my favorite hero when i was a kid. he was just this big goofy uncle who could make you laugh with pretty much every line he said. i wanted to watch all of his movies, and vikramarkudu was at the top of my list.
unfortunately, my dad never let me watch it. it was too violent, he said.
having finally watched it, i think my dad undersold it. this is peak sleazy, perverted, low-brow masala filmmaking. rajamouli doesn't exactly nail the landing, but it's still a grand old time.
i guess i'm finally a big boy.

father's day
rajamouli and prasad will return to images and situations here over and over again, in more personal and refined terms.
but some pleasures can't be denied, or this film's structural beauty, or rajamouli's sly assertion that a louche failed conman can succeed where a masala hero cop cannot.

Nice Tollywood action you got going there, would be a shame if it turned into tasteless copaganda that drilled some tacky clapping game into your head as a running motif alongside excessive amounts of MIDI farting for the soundtrack, while once again spending way too much time on flashbacks to halt the half-way pacing. Oh wait...
Review by Akshay Kumar ★★★★
If I have ever had a chance to live a day as S.S Rajamouli's character that would be Vikram Rathod. Few dialogues but the impact is huge, Screen time is less but memory of the him is unforgettable. He is the most relatable character for me as a person in his filmography. Equally tough, resilient, and soft-hearted guy. He has won over his death with a smile what can be a higher achievement than that?
Some people are born for a reason so is S.S. Rajamouli.
Review by _Dextro_ ★★★½ 7
While watching Vikramarkudu it was apparent to me this is the work of a man who would later make RRR . The police officer with an unstoppable, seemingly infinite fighting spirit, a big intermission that sheds light on his true motivations and hords of people getting inspired to fight their opressors (in this case a local mob boss) on their own. When our protagonist, a small-time crook and thief trying to live an honest life, gets mixed up with this soldier of righteousness because they look exactly the same, things really get going.
The first forty minutes are a bit messy, there are three different plotlines that don't really seem to fit together and the romance comes out of nowhere. Out…
Review by Sanjeet Singh
Rewatched it after ages, but the protagonist fits in an ugly way in the Rajamouli oeuvre, probably the most reckless/immoral protagonist Rajamouli ever worked with.

I was skeptical of Indian Bollywood, and I still am, to an extent. Interesting problem. Do I need to watch only that which I approach in "good faith," authentically? My primary means of engagement here was irony ... sign of the times. I think that in some ways this style of film is like modernist painting - it draws attention to the medium, the artifice. The dances were the clear winner in this movie. I liked them a lot. Watching this with friends made it an interesting social experience, which I rarely have with film. Very unique experience, and definitely a novel one.
Review by 🪨 ★★★½
rajamouli loves likening men 2 volcanoes, having fun with upside down shots; enjoyed whatever it is ravi teja is doing here
Review by Nick Hoffman ★★★½
I love it when a wacky weirdo has to fill in for a badass he looks exactly like to save the day.
This is very charming and fun with a few cringey bits. I feel the DNA for what RRR will become here more than in his other films, even a few shots taken directly.
P.S. Don’t read the Letterboxd plot summary, it takes a deliciously long time to unfold into what that’s says and it will only be confusing. Just buckle up and have a good time!

Vikramarkudu Telugu Movie
Watching Vikramarkudu is like eating a plate of Mirchi Bhajji from the roadside pushcart. It's hot and tangy (courtesy: Anushka) as well as has mass appeal like the roadside bhajji. The signature beat ''Jhintaka Jhintaka'' in Vikramarkudu is as catchy as the dialogues and their delivery are stirring. True, many scenes in the movie defy logic, but who cares. The masses need entertainment and there is plenty of it as Raviteja even goes to the extent of fighting with aunties, pulling their hair and hurling abuses at them.
If Raviteja is hilarious as Athili Sattibabu (a thief), his honesty and boldness personified in his other role Vikram Singh Rathod, a police officer. If the blow of a police whistles causes fear in Athili Sattibabu, the only fear Vikram Singh Rathod has is the fear of failure in carrying out his duties as a responsible police officer.
Here is the plot...
Athili Sattibabu is a consummate thief and conman. He along with his uncle Brahmanandam makes a good living out of cheating people. Two people (one adult and one child) change the happy-go-lucky life of Athili Sattibabu who has no qualms about fighting with aunties of his area. The first one is a grown up and gorgeous babe (Anushka) whom he starts romancing. The second one is a girl of 5-6 years who thinks him to be her father.
The girl is the daughter of Sattibabu's look alike, assistant superintendent of police, Vikram Singh Rathod. Vikram Singh Rathod is posted in Deogarh and wants to correct the vaastu of the town by punishing two big time rogues of the area (enacted by Ajay and Vineeth Kumar), for their list of misdemeanors. He succeeds partially but dies in the process. Enters Sattibabu, a la Don (old Hindi movie) style, to become the father of the orphan daughter of Vikram Singh Rathod and avenge the death of an intrepid police officer.
S S Rajamouli typically leaves his touch by making the villains as repulsive as possible. Music of Keeravani can be best described as pedestrian. The high points of the movie are the flawless acting of Raviteja and the lusciousness of Anushka. Raviteja has got all the ingredients that an actor should have and Anushka has all the assets to that a woman ought to have. Vikramarkudu does a favor to both the stars: one establishes herself and the other reestablishes himself.
The movie too could have been a blockbuster like the past four Rajamouli movies, had the ending been a little more dramatic. Vikramarkudu begins with a lot of comedy, slowly adds meat to the storyline and builds up interest. But when the crescendo builds up and an explosive climax is expected the viewer is treated to an unconvincing finale. Watch the movie and you will definitely agree that the ending of Vineeth Kumar is done lamely. A guy who could terrorize people and sleep with whoever he wanted from Deogarh area should have been a bit formidable instead of bowing down to the hero.
Ajay, who has been acting till now as a sidekick or a hero's friend till now gets a meatier role as a Daaku in Chambal valley. The illogical costume, stained teeth and a dubbed over voice gives him a filthy and repugnant image that heightens his role as a villain. Vineeth Kumar is simply loathsome by virtue of his acting. Brahmanandam is as usual at his best and Raviteja matches him word for word in comedy. The tint given to photography brings out the best of Chambal valley. On the whole, good work by Rajamouli, the cast and the crew.
If you are 18 and above (there is a lot of violence) you will definitely enjoy the movie.

'Yevadu' Review: Serious Mass Masala
Film: Yevadu Rating: 3/5 Cast: Ram Charan, Sruti Hasan, Allu Arjun, Kajal, Jayasudha, Kota, Saikumar, Brahmanandam, Rahuldev, Subbaraju, Supreet, LB Sri Ram etc Music: Devi Sri Prasad Cinematogrpahy: Shyam K Naidu Story: Vakkantam Vamsi Produced By: Dil Raju Directed By: Vamsi Paidipalli Release On: 12th January 2014
Ram Charan, after his biggest flop 'Toofan' combined with Vamsi Paidipalli whose latest film was 'Brindavanam'. In the production of Dil Raju the film took quite a long time to reach the screens today. Let us see how it performed.
Story: Satya (Allu Arjun) and Deepti (Kajal) were chased by goons and sets the bus they were travelling in to fire. Deepti gets killed but Satya survives with major part of his face burnt out of recognition.
Plastic Surgeon (Jayasudha) treats him and gives him a new face (Ram Charan). How Satya, with his new face, takes revenge on those who killed his lover Deepthi? That is quite predictable and occupies complete first half.
Then the twist comes with the appearance of Charan (Ram Charan) as a character. Why Satya gets Charan's face? Is that a serendipity? Or coincidence? Or something else? What happens further? That should be watched on screen.
Performances: Ram Charan has little scope to show variations as entire story runs in serious tone. But he marveled in dances. He proved how he can grip the attention of audiences with right choreographers around.
Allu Arjun and Kajal, though played cameos, they could make their presence felt in big way.
Sruthi Hasan is ok but Amy Jackson is a big waste. She neither served the purpose of narration, nor worked for audience as recreation.
Jayasudha scored the best. Dialogues are written very well for her.
Sai Kumar did his best and this kind of character is a not a big deal for him. Kota sparked laughs here and there with his trade mark style. Vennela Kishore was wasted and Brahmi did just ok.
Technically there are no complaints and director's caliber in planting emotions is laudable.
Highlights:
- Background score
- No humor quotient
Analysis: Vamsi Paidipalli cooked a dish comprising the best ingredients taken from previous super hit films of other directors. He took an element from 'Journey', a line from 'Vikramarkudu', an emotion from 'Chatrapathi' and an idea from Hollywood flick 'Face Off'. He should be appreciated for making the dish palatable at least for a set of audience. Yes, the film goes well with the masala fiction lovers.
Protagonist killing the antagonists one after the other putting a cross mark on the photographs was seen in countless number of films earlier. But still first half runs with enough pace and what is boring is Amy Jackson's part. Director used her just to fill the gap but that filling didn't help much to the film. The 10 minutes before interval sounds predictable but still the interest levels of the audience wouldn't leave the tenterhooks.
Second half appears to be slow as audience have watched such stuff in Vikramarkudu earlier. It can be understood that the director has taken the decision to make it slow in order to inject mood and build emotion. But still, it can be handled in better pace.
Songs sounded well as they have been lingering in the heads of people from many months. Choreography is very impressive and especially 'Freedom..' song deserves a mention. 'Ayyo Papa...' song rocks the masses while 'Nee Jatagaa..' song lures the melody lovers. Music and Background score are passed with first class marks. Cinematography gets the distinction.
All said and done, it should be underlined that there are no right elements to pull the attention of family audience. 95% of the talkie part in 2nd half runs in serious tone and the remaining carries some lighter moments through Kota.
The festival season should help the film but definitely it is not something on par with Ram Charan's last Sankranthi film 'Nayak'. But certainly far better than his latest dud 'Toofan'. And releasing after '1-Nenokkadine' is another advantage that it can lift.
Bottomline: Revenge Drama(s)

The tint given to photography brings out the best of Chambal valley. On the whole, good work by Rajamouli, the cast and the crew. If you are 18 and above (there is a lot of violence) you will definitely enjoy the movie. Watching Vikramarkudu is like eating a plate of Mirchi Bhajji from the roadside pushcart.

In Balakrishna's roaring voice, some sounded powerful. C Ram Prasad's camera work is top-notch. Thaman's songs are not worth talking about, but the background score is a major strength. His high-decibel score has elevated many episodes in the second half. He has designed a special theme for the 'Akhanda' character.
