Biotechnology is the use and exploitation of organisms and biological processes for the benefit of industry, society and the environment. The biotechnological potential of animals, plants and microorganisms is vast, particularly through the use of advancing genomic technologies.

There are many applications of biotechnology such as the development of novel medicines and healthcare products, through to the genetic manipulation of crops and algae for providing food security and bioenergy, and the use of plant and microbes for environmental engineering such as bioremediation.

Biotechnology is a core strength of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Manchester. Biotechnology research within the Department includes the genetic engineering of plants, bioremediation of terrestrial and aquatic environments, biofuels and bioproducts from plants, algae and microorganisms, environmental biotechnology, bioinformatics.

RMIT has a strong reputation for research and teaching in fundamental science and advanced molecular technologies.

Our innovative programs and projects address real-world issues essential to Australia’s innovation agenda.

Research within this discipline uses molecular approaches to diagnose and synthesise solutions for disease and environmental problems.

Under expert supervision, you will develop your skills and join researchers already active in:

  • aquatic and marine biology
  • ecotoxicology (biomarkers for environmental pollutants)
  • bioremediation of contaminated environments
  • environmental and molecular approaches to diagnose and develop solutions for disease, agricultural and environmental problems
  • genomics and sequencing techniques applied to various organisms
  • microbiology (food, medical, environmental and nano biotechnology, vaccine development, fundamentals of host/pathogen interactions)
  • plant biology (plant biotechnology and genomics, molecular plant breeding, ecotoxicogenomics, fire and environmental ecology).

RMIT has purpose-built biotechnology labs and advanced microscopy, spectroscopy, tissue culture, microbiology, nanobiotechnology and analytical biochemistry, and experimental animal house facilities located at our Bundoora and City campuses.

How you will learn

Research at rmit, time spent on research.

Full-time candidates are expected to commit at least four days per week (or at least two days per week for part-time candidates) to their research. The academic year is 48 weeks.

Regular contact with your supervisor

A schedule of meetings with your supervisor/s must be established to assess progress against milestones and timely completion.

Research methods for sciences

Research methods courses step you through the literature review and preparing your research proposal for confirmation of candidature. They are taught in large discipline groups.

You may need to complete an ethics module to ensure your research is ethical and responsible.

Research Techniques

You may elect to take (where relevant) electives in qualitative or quantitative research techniques once data collection has begun. You can use your own data to explore different research analysis techniques. Your supervisor will help you decide when you should take these electives.

Co-curricular activities

You are encouraged to participate in activities offered with the university, college and school according to your needs and interests.

This PhD may be undertaken in a project, thesis by publication or thesis mode. Prospective candidates should discuss these modes of submission with their potential supervisor/s.

You will be able to pursue an academic career in a university or be employed in senior leadership and management positions in government, scientific and industrial research laboratories.

Minimum requirements for admission

Prerequisites, selection tasks.

The minimum requirements for admission to a PhD program are:

  • a bachelor degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant discipline awarded with honours. The degree should include a research component comprised of a thesis, other research projects or research methodology courses that constitute at least 25% of a full-time academic year (or part-time equivalent). The applicant must have achieved at least a distinction average in the final year;  or
  • a master degree that includes a research component comprised of at least 25% of a full-time academic year (or part-time equivalent) with an overall distinction average or a master degree without a research component with at least a high distinction average;  or
  • evidence of appropriate academic qualifications and/or experience that satisfies the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research Training and Development or nominee that the applicant has developed knowledge of the field of study or cognate field and the potential for research sufficient to undertake the proposed program.

At RMIT a grade of distinction represents academic achievement of 70% or higher and a high distinction is 80% or higher.

If you are a current master by research candidate, you are able to apply for a transfer to a doctor of philosophy program through the process prescribed in the  RMIT Higher Degree by Research policy .

There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.

These entrance requirements are the minimum academic standard you must meet in order to be eligible to apply for the program. You will need to complete a selection task as part of your application.

A selection process will be conducted in conjunction with the School and supervisors you nominate.

English language requirements

Research proposal and supervisor.

You must attach a substantive research proposal that is 2 to 5 pages in length which articulates the intent, significance and originality of the proposed topic using the following headings:

a) title / topic b) research questions to be investigated in the context of existing research/literature in the area c) significance and impact of the research d) methodology / research tasks required to undertake the research e) particular needs (e.g. resources, facilities, fieldwork or equipment that are necessary for your proposed research program, if applicable).

Your application will not be considered if you have not discussed your research topic with a proposed senior and associate supervisor or joint senior supervisors. You must provide the names of the academic staff in the school you have applied to and with whom you have discussed your proposed research.

To study this course you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:

  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)
  • TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 79 (with minimum of 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 58 (with no communication band less than 50)
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): minimum of 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

You can gain entry to this program from a range of RMIT four year  Bachelor and Honours degrees  or  Postgraduate  or Masters by Research programs.

If you are an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand citizen you may be eligible for a Research Training Scheme (RTS) place where your tuition costs are funded by the Commonwealth Government under the RTS and you have full exemption from tuition fees.

Acceptance in an RTS place is very competitive and places are granted on the condition that you meet annual progress requirements and complete within the allotted time for your program and your status as a part-time or full-time candidate.

This means a maximum of 2 years for a full-time Masters by Research or 4 years for a PhD (or the equivalent part-time).

The  student services and amenities fee (SSAF)  is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

In addition to the SSAF there may be  other expenses  associated with your program.

Creating Synthetic Organelles Through Engineering Biology for Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing

About this project

Organelles are subcellular compartments with specialised function, like mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell or chloroplasts enable photosynthesis. Organelles allow biological processes that other components like enzymes alone do not. Despite our wealth of knowledge on organelles in their native organisms, we do not know enough to make bespoke organelles for targeted purposes. In a create-to-understand approach, the Rinaldi lab at University of Hull is exploring engineering biology approaches to create synthetic organelles for multiple applications in biotechnology. After the revolution of DNA sequencing and manipulation, synthetic organelles might be the next frontier in synthetic biology.

This PhD in Biochemistry project focusses on creating synthetic organelles that compartmentalise oily chemicals in microbes using components from plants and other organisms. These organelles will target a key challenge in biomanufacturing , the practice of using biobased processes like microbial fermentation to make chemicals. These chemicals are life-saving medicines, agrichemicals, and flavours and fragrances in our toothpaste and cleaning products that we interact with every day. Chemical production cannot be decarbonised and biomass is the only material abundant enough to displace petrochemicals. However, some high-value chemicals are toxic to the production chassis and ultimately, microbes can only make as much chemical as they can tolerate. Synthetic organelles are a radical new approach to provide tolerance and increase levels of high-value chemicals. This technology will be key in the transition from petrochemicals to renewable feedstocks in chemical production to meet sustainability and renewable carbon goals. This project will thus be researching how to engineer microbes to make high-value chemicals through fermentation from waste wood from the forestry industry towards a circular bioeconomy, whereby maximum value is extracted from resources and minimum waste generated.

Our multidisciplinary supervisory team brings together Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering and circular economy to create industrial symbiosis towards a circular bioeconomy. We will perform Techno-Economic Assessment and Life Cycle Analysis to evaluate the commercial viability and sustainability claims of our technology and develop to Technology Readiness Level 4 to pursue commercialisation. We will also assess the implications of the process in terms of environmental, economic and social effects. This will involve consideration of sources of cellulose as well as potential end-users for the chemicals and the requirements they may have. Social considerations include the potential for creation/loss of jobs and likely geographic distribution of these changes. The evolving regulatory framework also needs to be considered.

The PhD student will join a vibrant and diverse research community that will support and empower them and includes other PhD students in Biology and related disciplines, and technical support and knowledgeable experts. They will attend and present at weekly lab meetings and departmental seminars and be assigned a mentor to develop their career and scientific skills.

The PhD student is expected to be trained in a unique and highly valued skillset that combines molecular biology with fermentation science to fill skill gaps in the growing UK bioeconomy, which is supported by government funding and research strategy from UKRI BBSRC and EPSRC (Synthetic Biology, Engineering Biology). They will also produce world-class, high-impact publications and patents to pursue commercialisation. They will be exposed to a breadth of disciplines and stakeholders, and through the supervisor networks, they will explore post-PhD career paths in academia, industry, biotech entrepreneurship, consultancy, science communication, patent law, policy, government and more.

The successful applicant will receive a fee waiver and a maintenance grant/stipend for three years (full-time) or six years (part-time), which covers the research period of the PhD. The fee waiver for 24/25 is £4786 (Home fee) and the maintenance grant is £19,237 per annum. This rises each year in line with the UKRI’s recommended stipend allowance.

If you need to move into a fourth year (full-time) or seventh year (part-time) to complete your thesis, please note that you will not receive a tuition fee waiver or maintenance grant during this period and you will be required to pay a continuation fee.

MIT scholars will take commercial break with entrepreneurial scholarship

Two MIT scholars, each with a strong entrepreneurial drive, have received 2024 Kavanaugh Fellowship awards, advancing their quest to turn pioneering research into profitable commercial enterprises.

The Kavanaugh Translational Fellows Program gives scholars training to lead organizations that will bring their research to market. PhD candidates Grant Knappe and Arjav Shah are this year’s recipients. Knappe is developing a drug delivery platform for an emerging class of medicines called nucleic acid therapeutics. Shah is using hydrogel microparticles to clean up water polluted by heavy metals and other contaminants. Knappe and Shah will begin their fellowship with years of entrepreneurial expertise under their belts. They’ve developed and refined their business plans through MIT’s innovation ecosystem, including the Sandbox, the Legatum Center, the Venture Mentoring Service, the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps Program, and Blueprint by The Engine. Now, the yearlong Kavanaugh Fellowship will give the scholars time to focus exclusively on testing their business plans and exercising decision-making skills — critical to startup success — with the guidance of MIT mentors.

“It’s a testament to the support and direction they’ve received from the MIT community that their entrepreneurial aspirations have evolved and matured over time,” says Michael J. Cima, program director for the Kavanaugh program and the David H. Koch Professor of Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Founded in 2016, the Kavanaugh program was instrumental in helping past fellows launch several robust startups, including low-carbon cement manufacturer Sublime Systems and SiTration, which is using a new type of filtration membrane to extract critical materials such as lithium.

A safer way to deliver breakthrough medicines

Nucleic acid therapeutics, including mRNA and CRISPR, are disrupting today’s clinical landscape thanks to their promise of targeting disease treatment according to genetic blueprints. But the first methods of delivering these molecules to the body used viruses as their transport, raising patient safety concerns .

“Humans have figured out how to engineer certain viruses found in nature to deliver specific cargoes [for disease treatment],” says Knappe. “But because they look like viruses, the human immune system sees them as a danger signal and creates an immune reaction that can be harmful to patients.”

Given the safety profile issues of viral delivery, researchers turned to non-viral technologies that use lipid nanoparticle technology, a mixture of different lipid-like materials, assembled into particles to protect the mRNA therapeutic from getting degraded before it reaches a cell of interest. “Because they don’t look like viruses there, the immune system generally tolerates them,” adds Knappe.

Recent data show lipid nanoparticles can now target the lung, opening the potential for novel treatments of deadly cancers and other diseases.

Knappe’s work in MIT’s Bathe BioNanoLab focused on building such a non-viral delivery platform based on a different technology: nucleic acid nanoparticles, which combine the attractive components of both viral and non-viral systems. Knappe will spend his Kavanaugh Fellowship year developing proof-of-concept data for his drug delivery method and building the team and funding needed to commercialize the technology.

A PhD candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering (ChemE), Knappe was initially attracted to MIT because of its intellectual openness. “You can work with any faculty member in other departments. I wasn't restricted to the chemical engineering faculty,” says Knappe, whose supervisor, Professor Mark Bathe, is in the Department of Biological Engineering.

Knappe, who is from New Jersey, welcomes the challenges that will come in his Kavanaugh year, including the need to pinpoint the right story that will convince venture capitalists and other funders to bet on his technology. Attracting talent is also top of mind. “How do you convince really talented people that have a lot of opportunities to work on what you work on? Building the first team is going to be critical,” he says. The network Knappe has been building in his years at MIT is paying dividends now.

Targeting “forever chemicals” in water

That network includes Shah. The two fellows met when they worked on the MIT Science Policy Review , a student-run journal concerned with the intersection of science, technology, and policy. Knappe and Shah did not compete directly academically but used their biweekly coffee walks as a welcome sounding board. Naturally, they were pleased when they found out they had both been chosen for the Kavanaugh Fellowship. So far, they have been too busy to celebrate over a beer.

“We are good collaborators with research, as well,” says Shah. “Now we’re going on this entrepreneurial journey together. It’s been exciting.”

Shah is a PhD candidate in ChemE’s Chemical Engineering Practice program. He got interested in the global imperative for cleaner water at a young age. His hometown of Surat is the heart of India’s textile industry. “Growing up, it wasn’t hard to see the dye-colored water flowing into your rivers and streams,” Shah says. “Playing a role in fostering positive change in water treatment fills me with a profound sense of purpose.”

Shah’s work, broadly, is to clean toxic chemicals called micropollutants from water in an efficient and sustainable manner. “It’s humanly impossible to turn a blind eye to our water problems,” he says, which can be categorized as accessibility, availability, and quality. Water problems are global and complex, not just because of the technological challenges but also sociopolitical ones, he adds.

Manufactured chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or “forever chemicals,” are in the news these days. PFAS, which go into making nonstick cookware and waterproof clothing, are just one of more than 10,000 such emerging contaminants that have leached into water streams. “These are extremely difficult to remove using existing systems because of their chemical diversity and low concentrations,” Shah says. “The concentrations are akin to dropping an aspirin tablet in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.” But no less toxic for that.

In the lab at MIT, Shah is working with Devashish Gokhale, a fellow PhD student, and Patrick S. Doyle, the Robert T. Haslam (1911) Professor of Chemical Engineering, to commercialize an innovative microparticle technology , hydroGel, to remove these micropollutants in an effective, facile, and sustainable manner. Hydrogels are a broad class of polymer materials that can hold large quantities of water.

“Our materials are like Boba beads. We are trying to save the world with our Boba beads,” says Shah with a laugh. “And we have functionalized these particles with tunable chemistries to target different micropollutants in a single unit operation.”

Due to its outsized environmental impact, industrial water is the first application Shah is targeting. Today, wastewater treatment emits more than 3 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions , which is more than the shipping industry’s emissions, for example. The current state of the art for removing micropollutants in the industry is to use activated carbon filters. “[This technology] comes from coal, so it’s unsustainable,” Shah says. And the activated carbon filters are hard to reuse. “Our particles are reusable, theoretically infinitely.”

“I’m very excited to be able to take advantage of the mentorship we have from the Kavanaugh team to take this technology to its next inflection point, so that we are ready to go out in the market and start making a huge impact,” he says.

A dream community

Shah and Knappe have become adept at navigating the array of support and mentorship opportunities MIT has to offer. Shah worked with a small team of seasoned professionals in the water space from the MIT Venture Mentoring Service. “They’ve helped us every step of the way as we think about commercializing the technology,” he says.

Shah worked with MIT Sandbox, which provides a seed grant to help find the right product-market fit. He is also a fellow with the Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship , which focuses on entrepreneurship in global growth markets.

“We’re exploring the potential for this technology and its application in a lot of different markets, including India. Because that’s close to my heart,” Shah says. “The Legatum community has been unique, where you can have those extremely hard conversations, confront yourself with those fears, and then talk it out with the group of fellows.”

The Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab, or J-WAFS, has been an integral part of Shah’s journey with research and commercialization support through its Solutions Grant and a travel award to the Stockholm World Water Week in August 2023.

Knappe has also taken advantage of many innovation programs, including MIT’s Blueprint by the Engine, which helps researchers explore commercial opportunities of their work, plus programs outside of MIT but with strong on-campus ties such as Nucleate Activator and Frequency Bio.

It was during one of these programs that he was inspired by two postdocs working in Bathe’s lab and spinning out biotech startups from their research, Floris Engelhardt and James Banal. Engelhardt helped spearhead Kano Therapeutics , and Banal launched Cache DNA .

“I was passively absorbing and watching everything that they were going through and what they were excited about and challenged with. I still talk to them pretty regularly to this day,” Knappe says. “It’s been really great to have them as continual mentors, throughout my PhD and as I transition out of the lab.”

Shah says he is grateful not only for being selected for the Kavanaugh Fellowship but to MIT as a community. “MIT has been more than a dream come true,” he says. He will have the opportunity to explore a different side of the institution as he enters the MBA program at MIT Sloan School of Management this fall. Shah expects this program, along with his Kavanaugh training, will supply the skills he needs to scale the business so it can make a difference in the world.

“I always keep coming back to the question ‘How does what I do matter to the person on the street?’ This guides me to look at the bigger picture, to contextualize my research to solving important problems,” Shah says. “So many great technologies are being worked on each day, but only a minuscule fraction make it to the market.”

Knappe is equally dedicated to serving a larger purpose. “With the right infrastructure, between basic fundamental science, conducted in academia, funded by government, and then translated by companies, we can make products that could improve everyone’s life across the world,” he says.

Past Kavanaugh Fellows are credited with spearheading commercial outfits that have indeed made a difference. This year’s fellows are poised to follow their lead. But first they will have that beer together to celebrate.

QIAcuity Four - digital PCR

The QIACuity Four digital PCR system allows for absolute quantitation of genetic material without the reliance on standard curves. It is ideal for gene expression analysis, microbial enumeration, detection, and multiplexed assays. Multiplexed reactions with up to 5 targets/fluorophores can be run with little to no optimization required.  Users who have tried multiplexing with real-time PCR will appreciate the ease at which you can readily set up and run 5 color experiments. Minimal adjustments to existing PCR reactions are needed, requiring only specialized PCR plates and master mix. Competitive price per reaction makes it a cost-effective alternative to real-time PCR. 

Real-time PCR 

The Biotech Innovation Core is home to both a BioRad CFX-96 and CFX-384, for 96- or 384-well plate real-time PCR reactions.  This real-time PCR detection system offers sensitive and reliable detection for single or multiplex reactions. You can easily set up runs and monitor amplification traces in real time on the integrated touch screen, or use the CFX software for experiment design and results analysis. 

Covaris M220 - focused ultrasonicator

Quickly and efficiently shear large genomic DNA into user-defined fragment lengths for downstream sequencing library preparation.  Can also be used for standard sonication methods such as cell lysis.

Qubit 4 

The Invitrogen Qubit 4 Fluorometer accurately and quickly measures the concentration of DNA, RNA, or protein in a single sample. It can also be used to assess RNA integrity and quality. The easy-to-use touchscreen menus make it easy to select and run the assays you need, with results displayed in just a few seconds.

Automated Nucleic Acid extraction

The Core is equipped with a QIAcube Connect which automates Qiagen spin column based kits to extract RNA or DNA.  This unit can process 12 samples at a time.  For higher throughput experiments, we have a Kingfisher Apex, which is able to process 96 samples per run using its magnetic bead based technology.   

General Equipment

We are also equipped with general items such as a nanodrop, thermocyclers, heat blocks, thermal mixers, centrifuges, cold storage, electrophoresis equipment, a gel imager, multichannel pipettes and much more.

Introduction

A need was felt to establish a nationally cohesive, interdisciplinary Ph.D. programme in biosciences to expand the scale of generating highly skilled, globally competitive human resource. It was envisioned that the trained human resource produced through this programme would be better equipped to provide bioscience-based pioneering solutions to contemporary problems relevant nationally and globally. The main objective of the proposed programme would be to foster greater academic and research interaction among the institutions of the DBT BRIC (iBRICs), RCB and ICGEB, and to increase the professional networking opportunities for the Ph.D. scholars.

About The i3c BRIC-RCB Ph.D. Programme

Key Highlights

  • The collaborative initiative between the Institutions of BRIC (iBRIC), RCB and ICGEB aims to promote excellence in biotechnology research and education in India.
  • The programme provides extensive learning opportunities in the fields of life sciences and biotechnology through classroom and online teaching, workshops and hands-on training in high- end technology platforms.
  • It offers an interdisciplinary Ph.D. programme in Biosciences to students with a Master’s degree in Life Sciences as well as Medicine graduates & BTech/BE in non-biological sciences.
  • It includes a three-month immersion programme, supported by a generous additional grant, to expose students to real-world challenges and aims to foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship among young scientists.

Eligibility & Selection

The new i3C BRIC-RCB Ph.D. programme is expected to include highly talented students from backgrounds in the broad fields encompassing biotechnology, medicine and engineering. There will be two proposed tracks of entry into the programme.

Number of seats: Up to 70

Fellowship emoluments:  As per extant fellowship norms of the respective funding agency

Educational qualification :   Indian/ international (e.g. TWAS) students with an MSc/ MTech in any of Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, MPharm, MVSc, MBBS or an equivalent degree would be eligible to apply. An aggregate score of 55% or an equivalent grade in the preceding qualifying degree examination would be a necessary qualification (with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC- NCL/differently-abled allowed as per extant statutory norms). Four-year undergraduates from all of the above disciplines are also eligible as per UGC guidelines.

Selection Criteria:

Admission to the i3C BRIC-RCB Ph.D. programme in biosciences would require qualification in a national level fellowship examination such as the DBT-BET, CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, ICMR-JRF, or similar, which provides a five-year valid fellowship for pursuing a Ph.D. tenable at any of the iBRICs, RCB or ICGEB. Eligible applicants will be screened and shortlisted for interviews to be conducted around June-July each year.

Up to ten additional fellowships are likely to be instituted to encourage engineering (BTech/BE) and medicine graduates (MBBS) to apply to the programme. Undergraduates in any branch of engineering (BTech/ BE) or medicine (MBBS) with 55 % aggregate marks in the preceding qualifying degree examination would be a necessary qualification (with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/differently-abled allowed as per extant statutory norms). The selection process will involve a separate written examination and/or an interview.

Allotment of institution and Ph.D. supervisor

The selected students will be assigned iBRIC institutions and Ph.D. supervisors along with their admission offer. The assignment of supervisors and iBRIC institutions will be made based on the interview merit scores and the students’ preferred research areas and supervisors, which would be submitted by the student prior to the interviews. It is expected that about five students from the programme will join each iBRIC/RCB/ICGEB in the first year, totaling about 75 students. All students inducted into this programme will receive their Ph.D. degree from RCB.

Registration and enrolment

The selected students will take admission at the assigned institutions and report to RCB Faridabad for registration and the first semester of coursework. A one-page description of the Ph.D. project, prepared in consultation with the assigned supervisor in a prescribed format, would need to be submitted along with the registration. Selected students will be housed at RCB- administered accommodation for the first semester, during which all campus facilities available to RCB students will be made available to the selected students. These include twin shared, off- campus leased accommodation, transport to and from the campus, meal facilities in the mess and cafeterias, access to campus medical facilities, and access to library, IT, and sports facilities.

The selected students will be provided counselling at RCB and assigned iBRIC institutions and Ph.D. supervisors along with their admission offer. The assignment of supervisors and iBRIC institutions will be made based on the interview merit scores and the students’ preferred research areas and supervisors, which would be submitted by the student prior to the interviews. In order to streamline the process, each iBRIC would be requested to provide the available list of supervisors before each admission cycle. It is expected that about five students from the programme will join each iBRIC/RCB/ICGEB in the first year, totaling about 75 students. Since all students inducted into this programme will receive their Ph.D. degrees from RCB, BRIC/ each iBRIC would be required to maintain an academic affiliation with RCB. Similarly, each iBRIC supervisor is also required to be an adjunct (affiliated) faculty of RCB.

The selected students will register with RCB immediately after admission and be required to activate their Ph.D. fellowships. A one-page broad description of the Ph.D. project, prepared in consultation with the assigned supervisor in a prescribed format, would need to be submitted along with the registration. The selected students will also be required to activate their respective Ph.D. fellowships directly through their respective parent iBRICs. During the scholars’ stay at RCB in the first semester, RCB will provide the monthly attendance record to the respective institutions to facilitate fellowship disbursement from the funding agencies. Selected students will be housed at RCB-administered accommodation for the first semester, during which all campus facilities available to RCB students will be made available to the selected students. These include twin shared, off-campus leased accommodation, transport to and from the campus, meal facilities in the mess and cafeterias, access to campus medical and counselling facilities, and access to library, IT, and sports facilities.

Programme Structure

The courses offered in the first semester at RCB (~August to December) will be taught by RCB and iBRIC faculty members and external experts. In line with current UGC guidelines, students will be expected to complete 12 (twelve) mandatory credits during the coursework. The overall structure of the course is outlined below:

Compulsory courses – 9 credits

  • Research methodology (4 credits) – theory
  • Science communication and ethics (2 credits) – theory
  • Biostatistics with computation (3 credits) – theory
  • High-end instrumentation

Optional (elective) courses: one mandatory

  • Biochemistry (3 credits)
  • Molecular biology (3 credits)
  • Cell and developmental biology (3 credits)
  • Microbiology (3 credits)
  • Basic neuroscience (3 credits)
  • Basic immunology (3 credits)
  • Basic plant biology (3 credits)
  • A selection of online courses

The three-month mandatory immersive field internships will follow the first semester of coursework. Students will be required to submit a report to RCB and the concerned iBRIC at the end of the internship.

High-end platform technology courses in modern biotechnology

Training modules will be provided on high-end instrumentation facilities at the Advanced Technology Platform Centre (ATPC) of RCB and iBRIC facilities. The purpose of this module is to acclimatise scholars to the latest technology platforms being used in modern biosciences, such as protein purification, optical imaging, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, data analysis, next-generation genomics.

These modules will be taught by dedicated, qualified technical personnel who will be recruited for this purpose. These training modules represent a novel component of the doctoral coursework pioneered through this programme.

Monitoring Ph.D. research progress

The supervision of the thesis will be conducted by the designated Ph.D. supervisor at one of the iBRICs/ RCB/ ICGEB. A thesis committee (student advisory committee, or SAC), constituted for each student as per RCB norms, will regularly monitor the research progress.

An annual conclave will be held for scholars and supervisors at iBRICs/ RCB/ ICGEB in rotation. Each registered scholar will be required to participate in two such conclaves during the third and fifth years of their Ph.D. tenure. Third year students will present posters of their research. Fifth year students will make oral presentations of their research work. Poster and oral presentation prizes will be presented to recognize meritorious work. Participating students may meet the expenses related to attending the conclave from their respective fellowship contingency funds.
