Preparing students to be advanced practice nurses providing care to acute and chronically ill adults.

Adult Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (AGACNS) graduates are eligible for the adult-gerontology acute care CNS certification exam administered by AACN or ANCC. CNSs, often called "the nurse's nurse," are in-demand specialists who offer clinicians on the unit, in the clinic, and at the hospital evidence-based guidance and mentoring along with top-notch clinical care.

Preparing students to be nurse practitioners who provide care to acute and chronically ill adults.

Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner graduates are eligible for the adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner certification exam administered by AACN or ANCC.

A two-year master’s program for those outside the field who want to become nurse leaders on a fast track.

Over two years, CNL graduates earn a fast-track-to-nursing master's in nursing degree, and are eligible for the NCLEX and clinical nurse leader (CNL) certification exams. Though they begin work as novice nurses at the bedside, CNL graduates tend to rise quickly, given their real-world experience, ability to do evidence-based unit improvement projects, and leadership learning.

A fast-track master’s degree program for RNs interested in healthcare administration, nursing leadership and policy–and all the benefits an advance.

Graduates are eligible for the CNL certification exam.

Preparing students to be advanced practice nurses providing compassionate, holistic care to patients, families and communities.

Graduates are eligible for the family NP certification exam administered by AANPBC or ANCC.

NNPs provide care to vulnerable infants and children across a variety of settings, both inpatient and outpatient.

Graduates are eligible for the NNP certification exam administered by the National Certification Corporation (NCC).

Preparing students to be advanced practice nurses providing front-line care to children as clinicians, educators and researchers.

Graduates are eligible for the PNP-AC certification exam administered by PNCB.

Preparing students to be advanced practice nurses providing exceptional front-line care to children as clinicians, educators and researchers.

Graduates are eligible for the pediatric primary care NP certification exam administered by PNCB.

Preparing nurses in advanced practice roles to promote and maintain health and to prevent, detect and treat acute and chronic mental illness.

Graduates are eligible for the PMHNP certification exam administered by ANCC.

Students in the dual Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist + Nurse Practitioner track complete all requirements of the AGACNP and AGCNS tracks. Students seeking to pursue a dual AGAC CNS + NP are required to talk with the director of advanced practice about suitability and alignment with their personal goals. The dual track plan of study is a demanding curriculum with implications for licensure, certification and credentialing in one’s career as an advanced practice nurse. Successful dual track students typically do not work concurrently.

Graduates are eligible for the adult-gerontology acute care CNS certification exam administered by AACN or ANCC and the adult-gerontology acute care NP certification exam administered by AACN or ANCC.

The School of Nursing is a community of scholars having as its central purpose the enrichment of the human mind. Within this community, the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Program seeks to prepare scholars who will advance nursing knowledge. Scholarly achievement in nursing is accomplished in a spirit of free inquiry directed toward a better understanding of human existence, especially in relation to health and illness. Nurse scholars must participate in the study of particular phenomena and in the identification of central domains related to these phenomena. This requires that students be well informed about advanced practice in professional nursing.

Nursing knowledge is advanced through association with other disciplines and is often enhanced by the work of other university scholars. Central to the education of nurse scholars is the opportunity to interact with other scholars throughout the university community. Through dialogue and study with these professionals, nurse scholars expand their understanding of health and illness and the biological, environmental, sociocultural, ethical, legal, philosophic, and historic factors influencing nursing care.

Scholars must be inquisitive, informed, and committed. This requires expertise in the principles and methods of inquiry and an informed imagination for exploring substantive areas in nursing. The ultimate goal of this inquiry is to enhance nursing’s contribution to the health of all persons.

Purpose and Program Aims

The major purpose of the doctoral program in nursing is to prepare scholars with expertise in selected substantive areas who will contribute to nursing theory and practice through systematic inquiry. Aims of the doctoral program in nursing are to prepare scholars who will:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of nursing, related sciences and humanities, and methods of inquiry.
  • Expand the research base of nursing theory and practice.
  • Serve the Commonwealth, the nation, and the world by addressing major nursing and health care issues in a scholarly manner.

Program Components

The PhD program consists of courses, research and teaching activities, and required experiential elements (comprehensive exam, grant submission, dissertation proposal defense, dissertation and its defense). We support our PhD students in obtaining the skills needed for teaching in a future faculty role. Many students gain teaching experience within a funded Graduate Teaching Assistantship. Students are encouraged to work with their advisors to identify other teaching resources within the University as well.

Nursing Field

The evolution and current state of nursing knowledge are examined from both historical and philosophical perspectives and serve as the basis for the establishment of critical inquiry and study in addressing the increasingly complex health care needs of vulnerable populations.

The research component of the program includes courses in research design and methodology, statistics, individually designed research practicums, and the dissertation. The dissertation is a culminating experience which requires the student to plan and implement a research study of significance to nursing.

Students planning to use qualitative research methods should take a second advanced qualitative methods course, and students planning to use quantitative research methods should take an additional advanced quantitative methods course that is specific to the method they plan to use for their dissertation research.

Cognate Minor (9-12 credits)

The cognate requirement includes course work in a single cognate field or combination of fields outside the School of Nursing. The cognate field is intended to complement the student’s major scholarly focus. Cognates must be at the 5000 level or higher and be offered from departments outside of the School of Nursing (not GNUR classes).

Electives (3-6 credits)

Electives are selected by the student on the basis of individual interest. These should complement the total program of study and may be taken both within and outside the School of Nursing. Electives must be at the 5000 level or higher and may include GNUR classes.

NOTE: Students must have a total of 15 credit hours of cognates plus electives. If 12 credit hours of cognates, 3 credit hours of electives are required. If 9 credit hours of cognates, 6 credit hours of electives are required. All cognate and elective credits must be graded on an A through F scale.

Comprehensive Exam

All students are required to write a comprehensive exam. The comprehensive examination may occur within the last semester of course work, but must be held no later than: (1) if coursework is completed in the spring or summer, comprehensive exams must be completed by the end of the following fall semester; (2) if coursework is completed in the fall semester, comprehensive exam must be completed before the start of the following fall semester.  Students may apply to the Director of the PhD Program for an extension of one semester maximum. Failure to complete the examination within the allotted timeframe constitutes a failure to make satisfactory progression and can be grounds for involuntary withdrawal from the program. Students can apply to take comprehensive exams after completion of course work requirements as represented in the Plan of Study, and comprehensive exams must be completed prior to the defense of the dissertation proposal. The purpose of the examination is to demonstrate the student’s ability to synthesize knowledge in the student’s area of expertise, to visualize the long-term development of a program of research in that area, and to place the planned dissertation research in the context of that program of research and the area of knowledge (more details in the School of Nursing PhD Handbook).

Once the Comprehensive exam is completed, students must enroll in GNUR 9890, Dissertation Seminar, every semester until graduation unless exempted by dissertation advisor.

Dissertation (12 credits of GNUR 9999)

The dissertation is a culminating experience which requires the student to plan and implement a research study of significance to nursing.

Application for Degrees

PhD degrees are granted in December, May, and August. The student must be registered for the fall semester to receive the degree in December, for the spring semester to receive the degree in May, and for summer session to receive the degree in August. The student must apply to graduate via the Student Information System (SIS).

Voluntary Withdrawal

A graduate student may not voluntarily withdraw from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences later than one week immediately preceding the beginning of course examinations. An official application to withdraw must be obtained from the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and must be approved in writing by the dean, with a statement of the reason for the withdrawal. The student must report to the Office of the Dean of Students for an exit interview. All student identification cards are to be deposited with the Office of the Dean of Students at the time of withdrawal. The official withdrawal form is forwarded to the University Registrar, who notifies all other administrative offices of the withdrawal action.

A student who withdraws from the University for reasons of ill health must notify the Department of Student Health, and subsequent medical clearance from Student Health is among the requirements for readmission. Failure to comply with the above regulations subjects the student to suspension from the University by the vice president for student affairs.

Readmission After Voluntary Withdrawal

Readmission to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is not automatic; after an absence of a semester or longer, a former student must apply for readmission to the Graduate School. To apply for readmission to the University, the student must submit an application per the requirements of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Enforced Withdrawal

The student may be required to withdraw from the University if the advisor, the dissertation chair, the responsible department members, and the dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences determine that the student is making unsatisfactory progress toward a degree.

A New Dean for the School of Nursing

A headshot of Marianne Baernholdt.

Marianne Baernholdt, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, will return to UVA this summer as the dean of the School of Nursing.

Please join me in welcoming Marianne Baernholdt, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, as the new dean of the School of Nursing beginning this summer.

Dr. Baernholdt is an international scholar and nursing leader who has devoted herself to mentoring students and junior faculty in safety, quality, innovation and leadership. She comes to us from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Nursing, where she's the associate dean of global initiatives, the interim dean of research and a founding director of its Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization-Collaborating Center in Quality and Safety Education in Nursing and Midwifery.

She is also a former faculty member at both our School of Nursing and School of Medicine. During her previous stint here, her leadership roles included serving as director of global initiatives for the School of Nursing and director of its Rural & Global Health Care Center.

“Dr. Baernholdt will provide the School of Nursing a holistic, global perspective on the most important issues in nursing,” said K. Craig Kent, MD, Chief Executive Officer of UVA Health and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs at UVA. “She is a scholar, a thought leader, an exceptional educator and an innovator in patient care and safety. She is everything we could ask for in a dean.”

Dr. Baernholdt’s research focuses on how to define quality of care, as well as the factors that affect care quality in rural areas around the world. She is an expert in using large databases to track organizational, patient and clinician outcomes.

She's also an outstanding, award-winning educator. UVA Executive Vice President and Provost Ian Baucom, PhD, the University’s chief academic officer, noted that Baernholdt has mentored countless students and junior faculty. “Dr. Baernholdt’s excellence in teaching and research has been well-recognized,” he said. “She is a best-in-class educator and mentor, and we are delighted she is bringing her wisdom and experience back to UVA.”

When she starts Aug. 1, Dr. Baernholdt will succeed Pam Cipriano, PhD, RN, FAAN, as dean. During her more than 40-year career, Dean Cipriano has been a tireless advocate for quality, for increasing nursing’s influence on healthcare policy and for advancing the role and visibility of nurses.

“I’m deeply grateful for Dean Cipriano’s years of outstanding service to the School of Nursing, and thrilled to welcome Dr. Baernholdt back to UVA,” University President Jim Ryan said. “She is truly at the forefront of her field, and brings a tremendous scope of knowledge and experience. It’s a wonderful homecoming.”

UVA Alzheimer’s Expert to Head Translational Research Center

John Lukens in lab

John Lukens, PhD, is leading important research that could transform how we approach Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases.

An innovative Alzheimer’s researcher whose work is opening new frontiers in the fight against neurological diseases will serve as the inaugural Director of the University of Virginia’s Harrison Family Translational Research Center in Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases.

John Lukens, PhD, has been part of the UVA School of Medicine’s Department of Neuroscience since 2014. In that time, he has conducted groundbreaking research charting the crucial role of the immune system in brain injury and neurodegenerative disorders. In 2023, for example, he and his team discovered a molecule in the brain responsible for orchestrating the immune system’s responses to  Alzheimer’s  and  multiple sclerosis , a finding which could allow doctors to supercharge the body’s ability to fight those and other neurological diseases.

As Director of the Harrison Family Translational Research Center in Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases, Lukens will oversee the launch of a cutting-edge translational research program to develop the next generation of treatments for Alzheimer’s and related neurodegenerative disorders. Housed in UVA’s upcoming Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology, the center has been made possible by a generous $30 million gift by the family of the late David and Mary Harrison, two of UVA’s most generous benefactors.

“John Lukens is an extraordinary researcher, educator and mentor whose work is redefining how we think about Alzheimer’s,” said Melina Kibbe, MD, the dean of UVA’s School of Medicine and chief health affairs officer for UVA Health. “As director of the Harrison Family Translational Research Center in Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases, he will marshal UVA’s vast expertise to make bold strides against Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases, to the benefit of patients everywhere.”

The new research center will position UVA and UVA Health as world leaders in research into Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative conditions. The center will serve as a nexus linking the UVA Brain Institute, which encompasses all of UVA’s neurological research, and the Departments of Neurology, Neuroscience and Neurosurgery, among others, with the Manning Institute. Together they will translate fundamental basic science discoveries into treatments for some of the most complex and challenging illnesses, including those without good treatment options.

“The launch of the Harrison Family Translational Research Center in Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases is another critical piece of the Manning Institute of Biotechnology coming together,” said K. Craig Kent, MD, chief executive officer of UVA Health and UVA’s executive vice president for health affairs. “We are building tremendous momentum in our mission to transform health and inspire hope for people across Virginia and beyond. It’s an incredibly exciting time at UVA.”

The Manning Institute was made possible, in large part, by a generous $100 million donation from philanthropists Paul and Diane Manning. It also represents a major investment by UVA and state leaders, who recognize the institute’s potential to tackle some of the greatest challenges in medicine while driving economic growth for the entire commonwealth. Officials expect the institute will generate hundreds of jobs directly, and potentially thousands indirectly, by drawing biotech and pharmaceutical companies to a new “ecosystem of innovation” in Central Virginia.

Now under construction at Fontaine Research Park, the Manning Institute is expected to be completed and initially occupied by late 2026. The Harrison family’s $30 million gift – from the Harrison Foundation and the Mary Anderson Harrison Foundation – includes $20 million for a dedicated, state-of-the-art space for the Alzheimer’s research center within the 350,000-square-foot Manning Institute building.

UVA Executive Vice President and Provost Ian Baucom, the University’s chief academic officer, noted that the new Harrison Family Translational Research Center in Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases will play a vital role in training the next generation of Alzheimer’s researchers. “This will be a hub for some of the most dynamic and important Alzheimer’s research anywhere,” he said. “It will help us attract top scientists and enhance the experience we can provide our students and trainees, all while advancing the core missions of the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology.”

Lukens obtained his PhD at UVA and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital before returning to UVA. He has published more than 70 papers and book chapters and has received numerous awards, including being named a Hartwell Foundation Investigator in 2016.

Lukens’ innovative research as part of UVA’s Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG Center) has received millions in financial support from the National Institutes of Health, the Owens Family Foundation, the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Department of Defense, among others.

A dedicated educator and generous mentor, Lukens has launched the careers of many promising young scientists who are advancing the field of Alzheimer’s research and expanding our understanding of the role of the immune system in neurological diseases.

“I am honored to lead this new center which will bring together a collaborative and interdisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians to develop innovative strategies to treat Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases,” Lukens said. “This is a particularly exciting time to be involved in translational neurodegenerative disease research, as there is tremendous untapped potential in harnessing the immune system, microbiota and cellular-based therapies to limit the neuronal loss that underlies all neurogenerative disorders.”
