The Department offers a Ph.D. program in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology. The award of the Ph.D. degree is in recognition of high achievements, independent research and application of scientific knowledge to the solution of technical and scientific problems. Creative and productive inquiry is the basic concept underlying the research work.

In order to overcome any deficiency in the breadth of fundamental training or proper foundation for advanced work, special make up or pre-doctoral courses are given by the Department. Normally candidates having a B.Tech./M.Sc. are required to complete a minimum of 20 credits with a minimum required GPA of 7.5. M.Tech. or equivalent degree holders are required to complete a minimum of 6* credits with a minimum required GPA of 7.5.

M.Tech or equivalent, M.Sc. or equivalent, B.Tech or equivalent degree holders of a particular discipline with a valid GATE score or qualification in national level examinations like CSIR/UGC-NET, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, INSPIRE, etc are eligible for admission.

Minimum period of registration required for students with M.Tech. or equivalent qualifications is 2 years whereas those with B.Tech./M.Sc or equivalent qualifications is 3 years. All candidates are allowed a maximum of 14 registered semester for submission of their thesis.

Admission to the Ph.D. programmes is normally made on the basis of an written test to screen the candidates and interview of shortlisted candidates. The selection process is conducted by the Department through its Department Research Committee (DRC).

A scheme for the award of Teaching/Research Assistantship for providing financial assistance to the students exists. In terms of this scheme, those non-sponsored students who are admitted on full-time basis to Ph.D. programs are considered for the award of Teaching/Research Assistantship, under which they will be paid Rs.25,000/- per month for first two years (as JRF) and Rs. 28,000/- per month for next three years (as SRF). These students would be required to provide assistance of 8 hours/week to the Department.

Research at CCMB can be grouped under the following broad themes:

Developmental Biology

We try to understand how cells come together to form a complex multicellular organism - what signals cells sense to know their fates, where these cues come from, and how they are encoded, stored and interpreted.

Structural Biology

Cells work because of multiple classes of molecular machines working in them. We try to understand how the structures of these machines contribute to cellular processes and functions.

Genomics and Epigenetic Regulation

The genetic code holds information on the organisation and function of all living systems. We study the functional relevance of coding and non-coding regions of genomes in organismal development, health, and disease using various model systems.

Cell and Stem Cell Biology

We explore the mechanisms by which cells divide, differentiate, interact with their environment, and self-renew. These studies would lead to the development of novel approaches to address problems in human health.

Microbes and Biology of Infection

Pathogens cause disease by subverting cellular processes of their hosts. We are elucidating the mechanisms by which various classes of microbes establish infection and ensure their survival.

Wildlife Conservation and Ecology

Our conservation biotechnology program aims to provide insights on the protection and propagation of endangered wildlife, reveal aspects of animal behaviour, trace the evolutionary history of species, solve forensic cases, and help in early detection of wildlife diseases.

Crop Improvement

We use our understanding of plant genetics and physiology to develop crop varieties with enhanced traits such as higher yields and disease resistance.

Innovation and Technology Development

The leads emerging from our fundamental research are being channelled into developing technologies for societal benefit.

A. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR APPLYING

• Candidates with a Master’s degree in any branch of science or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Pharmacy/ Medicine are eligible to apply.
• Candidates in the final year of qualifying degree program are also eligible to apply. However, if selected, their selection will be conditional to completing the qualifying degree with the defined marks criteria.

B. SELECTION PROCESS

• Online applications will be screened and the eligible candidates will be called for a computer-based written test at one of their preferred centers among the 19 test centres across the country.
• Candidates qualifying in the written test and having a valid fellowship* for pursuing PhD will be shortlisted to appear for interview at CCMB. * The eligible fellowships include national level fellowships (JRF/ SRF of CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR), DST-INSPIRE or any other equivalent fellowship for pursuing PhD. The fellowship must be valid till the time of joining.
• Candidates with a BE/ BTech degree in Biotechnology or in any engineering discipline must have a GATE score of at least 85.0 percentile.
• BPharm degree candidates must have a GPAT score of at least 85.0 percentile.
• Candidates qualifying in both the preliminary and final interviews will be admitted into the PhD program
• After completing the admission process, students are registered in the academic program linked to the Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research (AcSIR).
• Candidates with lectureship only in CSIR-UGC (NET) examination or MSc/ MTech/ MPharm candidates with GATE/ GPAT will not be shortlisted for interview.

The school of biotechnology (sbt) was founded in 1985 as the first human resource centre of biotechnology by the department of biotechnology, ministry of science and technology, government of india. the school offers masters and phd programs in biotechnology rooted in imparting multidisciplinary skills which allow the students to have their career in biotechnology and develop their innovative ideas that can translate into bio-entrepreneurship. various elective courses floated by experienced faculty of the school enables the students to choose and get specialized in the area of their research interest. the school is equipped with faculty members having graduated from reputed academic institutions and universities of our country and abroad with diverse and inter-disciplinary backgrounds aligning with national strategic development polices and their demands. the school’s academic and research programs provide basic to advanced infrastructure for the students to enhance their technical and innovation skills. faculty members receive research support from different funding agencies, including dbt, dst, icmr, csir, and drdo etc. and some of them have been able to spin-off bio-business incubated at jnu. the school has been awarded ugc-sap, dst-fist, and dbt-builder programs in participation with other schools of the university. our alumni are placed in academic/scientific positions in many reputed national and international universities/institutes worldwide. some of them work in prominent biotechnology companies and some have started their own companies. sbt's mission is to expand its reach and to nurture innovative minds through education, professional development, and advancements in biotechnology knowledge., pan-india project for swayam prabha.

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.

Admission 2022-23

The   admission portal   for PhD admissions in University of Delhi is closed. The last date of registration is 20-June-2022. The entrance test for admission to Ph.D.programs for academic year 2022-23 will he held by NTA in coming months. The dates will be announced on University website. The syllabus for Ph.D. entrance test 2022 will be same as the syllabus of MSc Microbiology program in University of Delhi, which can be downloaded   here .

The bulletin of information for admission to Ph.D. courses of University of Delhi may be   downloaded here . The tentative number of seats expected to be available for admission to PhD program in Department of Microbiology for academic year 2022-23 are five (3 UR, 1 OBC, 1 SC).

The PhD program at University of Delhi is governed by rules framed under Ordinance VI, which can be downloaded   here .

Submission of research proposal in the application form is not mandatory.

Eligibility :

The candidate should have a minimum 55% marks (or equivalent CGPA score) in Master’s Degree/ M.Phil./ M. Tech./ M.D./ M.S. in any branch of life Sciences/ Medical Sciences/ any branch of Biology from a recognized University/ Institute.

Those students who qualify UGC-NET (including JRF), UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF), ICAR-NET, GATE (in 'Life Science' or 'Biotechnology' subject with minimum percentile as described ahead), are eligible to appear directly for interview for Ph.D. admission. However, every applicant must apply and register at admission portal before last date of registration (20-June-2022).

GATE eligibility

Please note that candidate who have qualified GATE either in 'Life Science' or in 'Biotechnology' subject with minimum percentile score as listed below, will be eligible for directly appearing in interview of Ph.D. admission.

General category: Percentile of 90 and above

OBC: Percentile of 85 and above

SC, ST, PwD: Percentile of 80 and above

Entrance Test:

The date for the conduct of the Entrance Examination for admission to Ph.D. Microbiology will be announced by NTA. The entrance test will be of 2 hour duration and will consist of 50 multiple choice questions.  The syllabus for entrance test would be the syllabus for M.Sc. Microbiology course of University of Delhi which can be downloaded   here .

Important information for OBC applicants:

The OBC applicants who belong to the ‘Non-Creamy Layer’ and whose caste appears in the Central List of the OBCs only, shall be eligible to be considered for admission under the OBC category (Validity period of OBC certificate in respect of ‘creamy layer’ status of the applicants as per DOPT Office Memorandum No. 36036/2/2013-Estt.(Res-I) dated 31 March 2016).   The validity of the non-creamy layer certificate shall be for the financial year 2021-2022, issued after 31st March, 2022.   If the applicants do not have the OBC non-creamy layer certificate of the financial year 2021-22 at the time of upload, the applicant may upload old OBC non-creamy layer certificate/acknowledgement slip of OBC non-creamy layer certificate application. However, at the time of admission, the applicant will have to produce the OBC non-creamy layer certificate of the financial year 2021-22.

Eligibility criterion and research areas for the two groups are mentioned below. Under the item No. 10(b) of Application Form, the candidate should enter the groups (BS, BME) they wish to join in the order of priority.

Ph.D Biotechnology at AIIMS Delhi Offline Course

Quick facts, course details.

Ph.D Biotechnology duration of the course shall be the time period from registration to submission of thesis. The minimum period of registration in respect of all the candidates who are registered for Ph.D. shall be three years. The maximum period of registration shall not exceed five years. Extension beyond the period of 5 years can be given for a maximum period of 6 months on the recommendation of Dean Committee and final approval by Dean/Director.

Eligibility Criteria

A: Fellowship seats available in the project (FA) Candidates with or without Own Fellowship can apply:

• Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology, Genetics, Life Sciences and Zoology.

B: Own Government Fellowship seats (OF) only those candidates who have their Own Fellowship or In-service candidates (as indicated) from a Government Organization can apply:

• Master's in Biotechnology/ Biochemistry/ Microbiology/ Life Sciences/ Genetics

Admission Details

Selection for Ph.D. registration will be through a three-stage performance evaluation as under:

(I) Medical / Dental/Nursing candidates:

Stage I: 30 Marks (30 MCQs of 1 Mark each) Aptitude related MCQs covering English (Written and verbal skills), Biostatistics, Research Methodology, Cell Biology, Lab Technology etc.

Stage II: 40 Marks (40 MCQs of 1 Mark each) Subject related theory based comprising Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) of MD/MS/MDS/M.Sc. Entrance level. Total Marks (Stage I + II): 70 (30+40) Total Duration (Stage I + II): 90 Minutes

Candidates must score at least 35 marks in stages I and II (combined) to be eligible for stage III. Candidates who do not fulfill the criteria to qualify for stage III will not be eligible for selection. B: The Special Weightage of 10 marks will be added to the total score of Stages I and II for candidates who fulfill both the following criteria: (1) they are eligible for stage III; and (2) they also hold a Medical Degree (MBBS/ BDS/ MDS/ DNB/ MD/ MS/ DM/ M.Ch.) or M.Sc. (Nursing) or equivalent.

Stage III: From the list detailed in section B above, 3 times as many candidates as the number of seats advertised will be called for departmental clinical/practical/lab based assessment (carrying 20 marks). These marks will be added to the marks of stages I + II + special weightage to determine the final merit.

(II) Non-Medical candidates:

Stage I: 30 Marks (30 MCQs of 1 Mark each) Aptitude related MCQs covering English (Written and verbal skills), Biostatistics, Research Methodology, Cell Biology, Lab technology etc.

Stage III: From the list detailed in section B above, 3 times as many candidates as the number of seats advertised will be called for departmental clinical/practical/lab based assessment (carrying 20 marks). These marks will be added to the marks of stages I + II + special weightage to determine the final merit.

Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) is an academic institution established by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India with regional and global partnerships synergizing with the programmes of UNESCO as a Category II Centre. The primary focus of RCB is to provide world class education, training and conduct innovative research at the interface of multiple disciplines to create high quality human resource in disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas of biotechnology in a globally competitive research milieu. In 2016, RCB was recognised as an Institution of National Importance by the Parliament of India.

Presently, the Department is headed by Dr. Anushree Gupta. The Department is known for its commitment to biomedical research and continuous efforts of the Faculty has established a name for the Department in the areas of Leprosy, TB, Malaria and Cancer. New fields of research initiated in the Department include Cardiogenomics, Bioinformatics, Osteoimmunology, Molecular Biology, Virology and Autoimmunity. The Departmental Faculty have published more than 500 research articles/chapters in journals/books of national and international repute and hold more than a dozen patents. For their research contributions, they have been recognized by various International and National Awards, Prizes and Fellowships from several Science and Medical Academies. The research projects in the Department are funded by various agencies of the Govt. of India, such as DBT, ICMR, DST, CSIR, UGC, intramural support as well as International funding agencies like CNRS, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,etc. with several Ph.D. students/Project fellows working on research topics in the afore mentioned areas. PhD is considered as the highest qualification a candidate can accomplish. It is for those students or professionals who are very much interested in research work and wish to obtain a doctorate degree in their interest area. PhD programme can help the candidates in having a better career prospects and making them an expert in their research area. 

PhD programme can be pursued either full time or part time. Students or professionals who have an orientation for doing research work along with their ongoing assignments or jobs can opt for part time PhD Programme. There are some institutes that offer part-time PhD in Delhi-NCR , such as Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT).

Candidates interested in pursuing PhD programme have to apply for admission in JIIT. Interested students have to meet the minimum qualification criteria and follow the admission procedure. To attain this degree, students have to fulfil the criteria specified by JIIT. MSc or Integrated PhD in Biotechnology

Biotechnology is a branch of science that applies Biology for the purpose of research and development. Biotechnology involves a wide range of subjects such as Engineering, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Chemistry. Along with Biotechnology Zoology, Life Sciences, Biological Sciences, Botany and Chemistry are the core subjects for completing M. Sc.. Specific courses such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Neuroscience etc. have also gained attention in past years.

M.Sc. is a 2-year course divided into 4 semesters. The minimum eligibility criteria needed to be fulfilled for pursuing the course is graduation in any science discipline, mainly, Biology, Math, and Chemistry. Most of the college for biotechnology are scholarship based funded or assisted by DBT.

Admission in MSc in Biotechnology

Admission to the course is based on the candidate’s performance in a relevant entrance exams such as JAM, GATE, JNU-CEEB, or TIFR. Biotechnology is a research-oriented subject which combines the disciplines of Technology and Biology. M.Sc. Biotechnology syllabus is designed in such a way that it enhances candidate’s knowledge about Biotechnology and its related disciplines such as Genetics, Animal Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, or Food Technology. Syllabus and eligibility criteria differs slightly from institute to institute.

Admission in Integrated PhD in Biotechnology

Integrated PhD courses are offered by many universities in India. An integrated PhD course curriculum comprises of content jointly designed by two or more higher education disciplines and regulated by a specific set of guidelines. Students who opt for integrated PhD have advantage that they don't have to take entrance exam for PhD second time and it takes less time as compared to individual courses. As well as fellowship is awarded during MS degree also.

Delhi University PhD Admission 2024 Guidelines 

16 may 2024, the delhi university has decided to use the university grants commission national eligibility test (ugc net) scores for admission to phd programmes for the academic session  2024-25, check guidelines for admission to phd programmes, based on their net scores, candidates will be eligible in three categories.

Category-1: Award of JRF and appointment as Assistant Professor - NET-qualified candidates are eligible for all three categories: JRF, Assistant Professor, and PhD Admission

Category-2: appointment as assistant professor and admission to phd - net-qualified candidates are eligible for assistant professor and phd admission but not jrf, category-3: admission to phd only - net-qualified candidates are eligible for phd admission, not jrf or assistant professor, admission under the jrf category will follow the ugc notification dated november 7, 2022, published in the gazette of india: extraordinary no. 544, for phd admission, weightage will be 70% for net marks and 30% for interview marks, the net marks of candidates in categories 2 and 3 will be valid for one year for admission to phd programmes, the university may conduct entrance examinations for phd programs where ugc does not conduct net examinations, such as in portuguese, italian, engineering, etc.
