There were a number of historic firsts as the  94th Academy Awards  returned to the Dolby Theater in Hollywood Sunday night — but they were overshadowed by a shocking moment when Will Smith walked up on stage and smacked Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Then, less than 30 minutes later, Smith gave an emotional speech after winning his first Oscar, for Best Actor. In a line that seemed to allude to his behavior, Smith said that Richard Williams, whom he portrayed in "King Richard," was a "fierce defender of his family," and he offered an apology to the Academy and his fellow nominees.

A big winner of the night was "CODA," a coming-of-age film starring three Deaf actors. It took home Best Picture, and Troy Kotsur became the first Deaf man to win an acting Oscar. Kotsur's win was greeted by the audience raising their hands in a gesture of silent applause..

"This is an amazing journey, I can't believe I'm here," Kotsur said. The film was also the first Best Picture Oscar for a streaming service, Apple+.

Other big wins included Ariana DeBose , the first openly queer woman of color to take home Best Supporting Actress. DeBose won for playing Anita in "West Side Story," the same role that Rita Moreno won for 60 years ago.

Though "The Power of the Dog" led the nominations with 12, its only major win went to director Jane Campion. Best Actress went to Jessica Chastain for her role in "In the Eyes of Tammy Faye."

"Dune" was also a big winner, taking home six awards, including Best Cinematography.

For the first time in several years, the Oscars show had a host — three, in fact, with Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes sharing hosting duties.

"This year, the Academy hired three women to host because it's cheaper than hiring one man," Schumer quipped.

Midway through Sunday night's broadcast, the show observed a moment of silence to honor the ongoing struggle in Ukraine. "We collectively as a global community can do more," said a statement displayed on screen. "We ask you to support Ukraine in any way you are able."

Academy reacts to Will Smith-Chris Rock incident

After the broadcast ended, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Scientists took to Twitter to weigh in on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock on stage .

The Academy said it doesn't "condone violence of any form," adding simply, "Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world."

"CODA" ends the night with Best Picture win

In what may be seen as an upset, the heartwarming film "CODA" took home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Lady Gaga and Liza Minelli announced the night's highest honor, and the award was accepted by the producers and cast of the film, with sign language interpreters front and center.

"CODA" (which stands for Child of Deaf Adults) tells the story of a Deaf family — Kotsur and Marlee Matlin play the parents — and how their hearing daughter comes of age and faces the difficulty of choosing between a more independent future and staying with her family.

The win is also a triumph for the streaming industry, with Apple TV+ becoming the first streaming service to take home the Oscar for Best Picture.

"Thank you to the Academy for letting 'CODA' make history tonight," producer Philippe Rousselet said.

So that happened… Will Smith and Chris Rock fight at the Oscars

In a moment that stunned the live television audience, the Oscars took a surprise turn when nominee Will Smith went up on stage and punched presenter Chris Rock during his monologue.

It happened after Rock made a joke about Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith's haircut, referring to her as G.I. Jane 2, which Smith did not appear to take lightly.

The audio on the ABC broadcast was cut a moment later, apparently to avoid profanity. Uncut footage from other countries, posted on social media, reveal Smith cursing after walking off stage, yelling at Rock, "Keep my wife's name out of your f—ing mouth!"

The stars were shining bright on Sunday! This year's  Academy Awards  brought out the biggest names in Hollywood for a night of fun and celebration.

Coming together at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, this year's Oscars was a musical performance-filled gala that also served as a celebration of cinema greatness and delivered some truly unexpected surprises and category upsets.

Hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel  -- serving as emcee for the fourth time -- the comedian brought his deft and innate comedic talent for a memorable night of recognition and entertainment.

From some long-awaited wins to some truly touching acceptance speeches, here are all the best, biggest and most memorable highlights from Sunday's 96th Oscars ceremony!

Jimmy Kimmel Shows Union Solidarity in Opening Monologue

In his fourth time as host, Kimmel felt confident and comfortable poking gentle fun at celebs without hurting feelings. However, he also made sure to infuse some genuine meaning into his monologue by celebrating the union teamsters and crew members who worked hard to support SAG and the WGA during their strikes.

Kimmel welcomed a big group of IATSE members onto the stage and and promised, "In your upcoming negotiation, we will stand with you, too. And also, I'm going to make sure the show goes really long tonight, so you get a ton of overtime."

Cord Jefferson Delivers Rousing Call for More Small-Budget Films

After winning the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for American Fiction ,  Cord Jefferson used his time on stage to deliver an impassioned plea for Hollywood execs to take more risks when it comes to funding small budget projects from unknown filmmakers.

"I understand that this is a risk-averse industry, I get it, but $200 million movies are also a risk, you know? And it doesn't always work out, but you take the risk anyway," Jefferson shared. "Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making 20 $10 million movies. Or 50 $4 million movies... I feel so much joy being here, I felt so much joy making this movie, and I want other people to experience that joy, and they are out there, I promise you."

Billie Eilish Shows Exactly What She Was Made For

The Oscars are known for their over-the-top performances of the nominees for Best Song. However, Billie Eilish managed to deliver one of the most powerful performances possible with nothing more than her brother Finneas O'Connell on piano and her crooning into a microphone (and a full orchestra just off stage). The singer belted out her Barbie track, "What Was I Made For?" and earned a tearful, breathless, roaring standing ovation from the star-studded audience -- including a stunned Ariana Grande, a crying Margot Robbie and a cheering Kate McKinnon.

John Cena Strips Down to Present Best Costume

Every time he appears in anything, it seems John Cena's comedic timing gets more and more perfected -- and that all culminated with his jaw-dropping Oscars presentation for Best Costume , when he took the stage fully nude, covering his privates with nothing but the winner's envelope.

Originally planned as a joke about the infamous Oscars streaker, Cena explained he no longer wanted to do the bit, because the Oscars were too elegant for such nonsense, but he wound up baring all anyway, and was saved by Kimmel fashioning a toga for him to maintain his dignity.

Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling Bicker Over 'Barbenheimer' Rivalry

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt's hilariously caustic banter was a better promo for their upcoming action rom-com The Fall Guy than any trailer could ever be. The pair took the stage for a special spotlight honoring stunt performers, but largely featured Blunt and Gosling playfully arguing about Oppenheimer and Barbie , and came to an end when Blunt accused Gosling of painting on his abs, before he angrily grabbed the mic away and demanded that they put an end to their feud. The pair had an effortless chemistry that made their presentation banter among the best we've seen at any awards show this year.

'Godzilla Minus One' VFX Creators Celebrate Historic With With Mini-Godzillas

When Godzilla Minus One took home the Oscar, it made history as the first foreign language film and first Japanese production to ever win the honor. It's also the first Godzilla franchise film to ever win any Oscar of any kind. Additionally, director Takashi Yamazaki, who also served as the film's VFX director, became the first director to win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects since 1969, when Stanley Kubrick snagged it for 2001: A Space Odyssey.

To commemorate the monumental win, the film's VFX team took the stage to accept the award and brought along some mini Godzillas as well, to share the spotlight with the iconic monster for one of the most adorable and sweet moments of the night.

Ryan Gosling Delivers a High-Kenergy Musical Performance

Appearing on stage accompanied by more than a dozen backup singers and dancers, Ryan Gosling -- joined by Slash and several of the other Kens from Barbie including Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans and Simu Liu -- tapped into his inner Ken doll while wearing a pink sparkly suit and sunglasses to unleash the Kenergy on the audience members, starting out in the crowd before coming up to the front of the room.

The  La La Land  actor -- who started his career in Hollywood as a member of the Mickey Mouse Club -- gave a stunning (and comedic) rendition of the song, which peaked on the charts following the film's release. By giving it his all and then going into the audience to sing along with stars, Gosling provided one of the most memorable moments in Oscar history.

The  2024 Academy Awards , hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, airs live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 10, at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET on ABC. Follow along at  ETonline.com  for full Oscars coverage, including red carpet arrivals, the  complete winners list  and more.

Thomas said director Christopher Nolan -- her husband -- was the reason the film became what it was, calling him "singular" and "brilliant," before giving a shoutout to their four children.

"The other night, I was panicking -- as you can see, happens a lot -- that maybe something like this could happen," she continued. "And Yorgos said to me, please take yourself out of it. And he was right. Because it's not about me. It's about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts. And that is the best part about making movies, is all of us together. And I am so deeply honored to share this with every cast member, with every crew member, with every single person who poured their love and their care and their brilliance into the making of this film."

He also thanked all the cast members including Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy, as well as his wife, "the incredible Emma Thomas … producer of all our films, and all our children. I love you."

"Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old," he continued, adding, "We don't know where this incredible journey is going from here, but to know that you think that I'm a meaningful part of it, means the world to me. Thank you very much."

In addition to best director, Nolan was also nominated tonight for best adapted screenplay, which ultimately went to Cord Jefferson for "American Fiction."

This awards season, Nolan has won a Golden Globe for best director and BAFTAs for best director and best film.

Other nominees in the best director category at the 2024 Oscars included Justine Triet for "Anatomy of a Fall," Martin Scorsese for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Yorgos Lanthimos for "Poor Things" and Jonathan Glazer for "The Zone of Interest."

Cillian Murphy won the Oscar for best actor for his role in "Oppenheimer."

The actor, who portrayed physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in "Oppenheimer," said he was "overwhelmed" to have won the award.

"I'm a very proud Irishman standing here tonight," he said. "We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb and, for better or for worse, we're all living in Oppenheimer's world, so I would really like to dedicate this to peacemakers everywhere."

Murphy accepted the Oscar from a group of previous best actor winners, including Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser, Ben Kingsley and Forest Whitaker.

This awards season, Murphy has won a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA.

Other nominees in the category included Bradley Cooper for "Maestro," Colman Domingo for "Rustin," Paul Giamatti for "The Holdovers" and Jeffrey Wright for "American Fiction."

Everything we know about the 2023 Oscars — including celebrity presenters, performances, pre-shows, and more

Pedro Pascal, Harrison Ford, Halle Berry, and Elizabeth Olsen are just some of the stars who will present at Sunday's ceremony.

Emlyn Travis is a news writer at  Entertainment Weekly  with over five years of experience covering the latest in entertainment. A proud Kingston University alum, Emlyn has written about music, fandom, film, television, and awards for multiple outlets including MTV News,  Teen Vogue , Bustle, BuzzFeed,  Paper Magazine , Dazed, and NME. She joined EW in August 2022.

Hollywood's biggest night of the year is almost here.

The 2023 Oscars are just around the corner, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a few changes to the program following its controversial 2022 broadcast. This time, all 23 categories will be presented live at the event after last year's decision to pre-tape eight competitive categories sparked backlash from industry professionals. This is also the first Oscars since Will Smith infamously slapped presenter Chris Rock during last year's ceremony — a moment that has already been referenced in promotional videos for the event .

The Oscars are voted upon by the more than 10,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the course of a four-month-long period. Final voting for the 95th Academy Awards is held from March 2 to March 7 .

EW has you covered for everything you need to know ahead of the 2023 Oscars, including who's nominated, who's performing, and how you can tune in. Find out more below!

When and where are the 2023 Oscars?

This year's ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 12, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.

How can I watch the awards ceremony?

The 2023 Oscars will air live on ABC . The ceremony will also be available to watch through multiple streaming services (which often offer free trial subscriptions) including Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV. You can also visit ABC.com or use the ABC app to watch the ceremony by signing in with your cable provider. If you are viewing outside of the U.S., you can check out the international local listings on the Academy's website.

Is there a pre-show?

Yes! There will be both a pre-show and an official lead-in broadcast ahead of Sunday's awards ceremony.

First, ABC News will host On the Red Carpet Live: Countdown to Oscars 95 , a pre-show event that airs from 1-4 p.m. ET/10 a.m.-1 p.m. PT on ABC. It will also be available to stream on the ABC News Live website from 1:30 p.m. EDT/10:30 a.m. PDT until the official start of the Oscars.

Later, Ashley Graham , Vanessa Hudgens , and Lilly Singh will join together to host the Countdown to the Oscars lead-in show, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT on ABC. The 90-minute special will spotlight many of the evening's incredible nominees, performers, and presenters, as well as give fans a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood's biggest night.

Catch all of the stars — including Brendan Fraser, Questlove, and Harvey Guillén — as they arrive on the ceremony's champagne carpet .

Who is hosting the 2023 Oscars?

Jimmy Kimmel will return as the host of this year's Oscars after previously anchoring the show in 2017 (which featured the Moonlight / La La Land debacle ) and again in 2018. "Being invited to host the Oscars for a third time is either a great honor or a trap," the Jimmy Kimmel Live host said in a press statement. "Either way, I am grateful to the Academy for asking me so quickly after everyone good said no."

In a promotional video ahead of the Academy Awards, Kimmel received his hosting orders from Top Gun: Maverick stars Jon Hamm and Charles Parnell. The pair noted that ABC was looking for someone who was both "unflappable and unslappable," a nod to Smith striking Rock last year.

Who is nominated at the 2023 Oscars?

A24's multiversal movie Everything Everywhere All at Once received the most nominations at the Academy Awards with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Actress ( Michelle Yeoh ), Best Supporting Actor ( Ke Huy Quan ), and Best Supporting Actress ( Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu ). It is followed closely behind by Martin McDonagh's drama The Banshees of Inisherin and the German war film All Quiet on the Western Front , which each scored nine nominations.

Other notable nods include Angela Bassett making history by becoming the first Marvel actor to earn a nomination for her performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , as well as everyone in the Best Actor category — which includes Brendan Fraser , Colin Farrell , Paul Mescal , Bill Nighy , and Austin Butler — being first-time nominees. See the full list of 2023 Oscar nominees here .

Who is presenting at the 2023 Oscars?

On Thursday, the Oscars announced that Halle Berry , Paul Dano , Cara Delevingne , Harrison Ford , Kate Hudson , Mindy Kaling , Eva Longoria , Julia Louis-Dreyfus , Andie MacDowell , Elizabeth Olsen , Pedro Pascal , and John Travolta will all present at the awards ceremony.

The event's final round of presenters join an all-star list that includes Halle Bailey , Antonio Banderas , Elizabeth Banks , Jessica Chastain , John Cho , Andrew Garfield , Hugh Grant , Danai Gurira , Salma Hayek Pinault , Nicole Kidman , Florence Pugh , Sigourney Weaver , Riz Ahmed , Emily Blunt , Jennifer Connelly , Ariana DeBose , Samuel L. Jackson , Dwayne Johnson , Michael B. Jordan , Troy Kotsur , Jonathan Majors , Melissa McCarthy , Janelle Monáe , Deepika Padukone, Questlove , Zoe Saldaña , and Donnie Yen .

Glenn Close was also originally set to present at the ceremony but had to bow out after contracting COVID-19 over the weekend.

Ahmed previously announced the Oscars' nominees with actress Allison Williams in January, while Dano, Weaver, and Connelly will perform double duty as presenters whose films are also nominated on the evening. Weaver made a splash in Avatar: The Way of Water — which is nominated for four awards including Best Picture, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects — while Connelly starred in Top Gun: Maverick , which is up for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), and Best Visual Effects. Dano is the only presenter that has two films — Steven Spielberg 's The Fabelmans and Matt Reeves ' The Batman — in awards contention this year.

Who will perform at the Oscars?

All of the Best Original Song nominees will perform at the Oscars.

Fresh off her recent Super Bowl performance , Rihanna will grace the Oscars stage to sing her single "Lift Me Up " from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Everything Everywhere All at Once 's "This Is a Life" will be performed by David Byrne , Son Lux, and actress Stephanie Hsu, who steps in for original performer Mitski . Actress Sofia Carson will be accompanied by Diane Warren for a poignant rendition of "Applause" from Tell It Like a Woman , and RRR 's "Naatu Naatu" will also be performed at the awards ceremony.

After previously announcing that Lady Gaga , a past Oscar winner in the Best Song category , would not perform her Top Gun: Maverick hit, "Hold My Hand," at the ceremony, ABC's On the Red Carpet pre-show revealed that she will actually sing the song after all.

Will there be an in memoriam segment?

Yes, the Oscars will pay their respects to the stars we've lost since last year's broadcast with an in memoriam segment during the show, which will feature a performance by rock legend Lenny Kravitz .

How can viewers vote for the 2023 Oscars?

Only Academy members are eligible to vote for the Oscars, but viewers can still get in on the fun by filling out EW's very own printable Oscars ballot and comparing how their picks match up with the actual winners on Sunday.

Who are the 2023 Oscars winners?

The 2023 Oscars will be handed out Sunday night in Hollywood.

The 95th annual Academy Awards returns to the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood after a one-year hiatus on Sunday, with Jimmy Kimmel as the night’s host , marking his third time leading the evening.

“It’s so important to have a host who knows how to handle live television and a live audience,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer recently said of Kimmel’s appeal. “He’s funny, he’s respectful, his edges aren’t too sharp.”

The hollywood reporter lands 44 socal journalism awards noms, including best print journalist and website, directors jack o'brien and george c. wolfe to receive lifetime achievement tony awards.

As for his approach to another possible slap, Kimmel told The Hollywood Reporter he’s ready: “If somebody comes up on the stage and slaps me? Well, I size them up, and, if I’m bigger than they are, I beat the shit out of them on television. And if it’s the Rock, I run.”

After last year’s controversial decision to pre-tape eight categories — documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short and sound — sparked backlash from the entertainment industry, all 23 categories will be presented live at the event this year.

Everything Everywhere All at Once,   All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár ,  Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness and Women Talking will compete for the top prize of the night at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday.

Here’s what to know about the 2023 Oscars.

How to Watch

The ceremony will be broadcast on ABC starting at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET and available to watch on ABC.com and the ABC app through viewers’ cable providers. The show will also be available to stream on Hulu Live TV, YouTubeTV, AT&T TV and FuboTV, many of which offer free trials.

For those who would like to watch the awards show but aren’t in the United States, the Oscars will be broadcast in more than 200 territories. THR has put together a handy guide , plus the Academy has an extensive list of local channels .

E! Live From The Red Carpet will air from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. PT/5 p.m.-7 p.m. ET, followed by a fashion recap from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m. PT and E! After Party from 8:30 p.m.-10 p.m. PT/11:30 p.m.-1 a.m. ET.

ABC News will also host a preshow special called On the Red Carpet Live: Countdown to Oscars 95 , which airs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. PT/1-4 p.m. ET and will be available to stream on the ABC News Live website from 10:30 a.m. PT/1:30 p.m. ET until the official start of the show.

Who to Watch

In addition to Kimmel, several of Hollywood’s A-listers will present this year’s Oscars to the winners. Unlike past years, however, not every acting winner from the previous year will be onstage to hand out the best acting and supporting acting trophies. With Smith banned from the Oscars for 10 years after slapping Rock onstage last year and resigning from the Academy, the King Richard winner will not attend the 95th annual awards show. It has not been announced who will be presenting which awards to whom on Sunday.

This year’s presenters include Florence Pugh, Andrew Garfield, Halle Bailey, Antonio Banderas, Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Chastain, John Cho, Hugh Grant, Danai Gurira, Salma Hayek Pinault, Nicole Kidman, Sigourney Weaver, Riz Ahmed, Emily Blunt, Glenn Close, Jennifer Connelly, Ariana DeBose, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Troy Kotsur, Jonathan Majors, Melissa McCarthy, Janelle Monáe, Deepika Padukone, Questlove, Zoe Saldaña and Donnie Yen.

Most of the best original song nominations will be performed at the show this year. Rihanna will take the stage for a rendition of her first Oscar-nominated tune “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever . Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava will perform “Naatu Naatu” from RRR .

David Byrne, Stephanie Hsu and Son Lux will sing “This Is a Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once , and Sofia Carson will take the stage to perform Diane Warren’s “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman . Lenny Kravitz will perform the “In Memoriam” segment .

However, Lady Gaga will not perform her nominated song, “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick , at the show. “We invited all five,” Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss said of this year’s nominees for best song. “We have great relationship with Lady Gaga, but she is in the middle of shooting a movie [ Joker: Folie à Deux ] It didn’t feel like she could get a performance to the caliber that she is used to, so she isn’t going to perform at the show.”

Nominations

A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once leads all the nominees , with 11 nods, including best picture, best actress for Michelle Yeoh , best director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and supporting acting noms for Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu.

Some of the acting categories featured expected names like Elvis ‘ Austin Butler, The Whale ‘s Brendan Fraser and Tár ‘s Cate Blanchett, but a few nominees were a bit of a surprise. Blonde star Ana de Armas earned her first best actress Oscar nom (and the first for an actress of Cuban descent ) for her role in Netflix’s polarizing Marilyn Monroe biopic . To Leslie star Andrea Riseborough’s questionable campaign — fueled by A-listers in the weeks before voting closer — resulted in her first nomination.

Riseborough’s unconventional campaign led to an internal review from the Academy after a widespread debate about the grassroots effort, in which several celebrities hosted events for the actress and raved about her performance in the film on social media and to their friends in the actors branch of the Academy. “We did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern,” CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement. “These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly.”

The Oscar nominations this year saw a total of 16 people who were first-time nominees in the acting categories, including all five men up for best actor, four out of the five up for best supporting actor, three for best actress and four for best supporting actress.

Steven Spielberg, Martin McDonagh, Todd Field, Catherine Martin and directing duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert were among those nominated in multiple categories , as were Ruben Östlund, Tony Kushner and Andy Nelson.

While many deserving films and talent were recognized with nods this year, there will always be projects and people who are snubbed. Among some of the Oscars’ biggest snubs were The Woman King star Viola Davis and director Gina Prince-Bythewood , Taylor Swift for her song “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing and Till director Chinonye Chukwu and star Danielle Deadwyler.

Prince-Bythewood and Chukwu were two female directors who were overlooked for best director nods, along with Women Talking ‘s Sarah Polley, She Said ‘s Maria Schrader and Aftersun ‘s Charlotte Wells.

The 2023 Oscars proceeded with the usual opening pomp and grand celebrity fashion show, as expected from Hollywood’s biggest night. The red carpet was full of wild questions, Jimmy Kimmel opened the night with expected slap jokes , then Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis won the audience’s heart with their moving, emotional acceptance speeches for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. David Byrne donned a pair of hot-dog-finger gloves while performing an original song from Everything Everywhere All At Once , alongside Mitski. And Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava tore up the stage with their performance of “Naatu Naatu” from S. S. Rajamouli’s Oscar-nominated Indian action epic RRR .

If you didn’t catch the three-hour-plus broadcast — or just want to relive some of the night’s brightest and weirdest moments — we’ve rounded up the best, the funniest, the most touching, and most exhilarating moments from tonight’s Academy Awards ceremony.

Let’s get down to it!

Questlove shows off his diamond-encrusted Crocs

Close-up shot of Questlove’s diamond-encrusted Crocs

This year at the Oscars, plenty of attendees showed up in white or cream-accented outfits to complement the ceremony’s extravagant pale entranceway, nicknamed the “Champagne Carpet.” Not Questlove, though. The Oscar-winning director and iconic joint frontman of The Roots showed up in nothing short of diamond-encrusted Crocs, stating that he’s “just been choosing comfort for years now,” and he’s showing up to “shine his light.”

I just got one question, though: What are those ?

Hugh Grant is here, and man, he is so over it

Hugh Grant #Oscars pic.twitter.com/WOGQAdDqoj — bruce (@BruceJVail) March 12, 2023

Did you know that Hugh Grant was in Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion ? It’s true, he makes a brief (and I mean brief ) appearance at the beginning, as Phillip, partner to detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). He’s there for like, all of five seconds.

Anyway, Grant was asked what it was like to film the movie, and whether he had fun. His answer: Ehhh?

The Snyder bros are back, and they are being extremely normal

Plane flying over the #Oscars red carpet right now with a banner that reads: #OscarsCheerMoment Zack Snyder’s Justice League pic.twitter.com/PYJn9kTbEW — Jarett Wieselman (@JarettSays) March 12, 2023

Remember when Zack Snyder’s Justice League (not to be confused with 2017’s Justice League ) won the coveted #OscarsCheersMoment prize at last year’s Academy Awards ceremony ? No? Well, the Snyder bros of the world sure do, and they’re clutching that “W” hard, like the prickly armored vice-grip of Steppenwolf. Somebody even went so far as to fly a plane trailing a banner over the Oscars red carpet, just to remind folks that it happened.

Jimmy Kimmel mocks the Nicole Kidman AMC ad

Nicole Kidman seated in her viral 2020 AMC ad

We come to the 95th Academy Awards ceremony for magic. We come to laugh, to cry, to care. That indescribable feeling we get when Jimmy Kimmel parachutes from the ceiling onto the stage and proceeds to riff on Nicole Kidman’s viral AMC ad, expressing gratitude that she’s free from that “abandoned theater she’s been trapped in for two years,” and snickering about how the ad urges people who are already in the theater to go to the theater. Because we need that — all of us.

Naatu Naatu dancers pulled Kimmel off stage

Getting played off by the Jaws theme song? Pssh, been there, done that. This year, Kimmel claimed, any Oscar winner who went overboard on their acceptance speech would get Naatu Naatu’d off the stage, which he promptly demonstrated.

Ke Huy Quan wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor

Ke Huy Quan accepted the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance as Waymond Wang in the Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan delivered a moving acceptance speech dedicated to his mother and his wife Echo, to roaring applause, recalling the story of his time in a refugee camp in Hong Kong as a child, and his arrival in America.

Jamie Lee Curtis dedicating her win to her parents — because Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh never won an Oscar

Jamie Lee Curtis accepted the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Deirdre Beaubeirdre in the Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once — the first nomination and first win in her 46-year career. She dedicated her award to her father Tony Curtis and her mother Janet Leigh, who never won Oscars, but were nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, for their performances in 1958’s The Defiant Ones and 1960’s Psycho.

The live-action-short winner sings “Happy birthday”

Tom Berkley and Ross White’s An Irish Goodbye won the award for Best Live Action Short at the 95th Academy Awards. Berkley took the opportunity to celebrate the birthday of the film’s co-star James Martin, by dedicating half his winner’s speech slot to a sing-along rendition of “Happy Birthday to You.”

David Byrne in hot-dog fingers

Stephanie Hsu and David Byrne took to the stage for a performance of “This Is A Life” from the Everything Everywhere All At Once soundtrack, with the latter donning a hot-dog-finger gloves to celebrate the occasion. That’s not all: Raccacoonie even made a surreal, glow-eyed appearance! Wow, all the stars really are out here tonight!

The donkey from Banshees of Inisherin hits the stage

Following a commercial break, Jimmy Kimmel brought out Jenny, the donkey that starred alongside Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin , describing Jenny as a “certified emotional support donkey” while encouraging her to thank Gleeson for letting her eat his finger. Awww!

[ Ed. note: The donkey seen on stage is confirmed to not be Jenny the Donkey, but in fact an imposter! Booooo!]

It's official: I've had it confirmed that the donkey on stage with Jimmy Kimmel was NOT Jenny the donkey. Sorry to disappoint my fellow Jenny fans. My source informs me that "Jenny is still relaxing in Ireland" #Oscars https://t.co/ax0cbR1Xcy — Alex Ritman (@alexritman) March 13, 2023

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava perform “Naatu Naatu,” confirmed as a “total banger”

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava — the playback singers who performed “Naatu Naatu” in S.S. Rajamouli ’s Indian action drama RRR in place of the film’s stars, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan — took to the stage for a performance of the song, complete with all the exhausting-looking dance choreography from the movie itself. Naturally, this one later won the Best Song Oscar.

Cocaine Bear showed up

Elizabeth Banks and Cocaine Bear on the 2023 Oscars stage

There he is. Cocaine Bear.

Lady Gaga’s emotional performance of her Top Gun: Maverick song

Lady Gaga changed out of her champagne-carpet duds and into a plain black T-shirt and torn jeans for a passionate, intimate performance of her original song “Hold My Hand” from the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack. Gaga’s performance was particularly striking for its otherwise sparse presentation and dynamic cinematography. The performance ended with a touching dedication to Top Gun director Tony Scott, who died in 2012.

Hugh Grant calls his face “basically a scrotum”

This is the Hugh Grant we came to see. He points at Andi Macdowell and says. "Still stunning," and then to himself and says, "a scrotum." #Oscars pic.twitter.com/5E1GazCA8a — Lance Ulanoff (@LanceUlanoff) March 13, 2023

Hugh Grant certainly seem to lighten up as the night went along, joking with his speech partner Andie Macdowell about the importance of regularly applying moisturizer while presenting the award for Best Production Design. Grant went so far as to compare Macdowell as “still stunning” thanks to her regular skin routine, meanwhile comparing himself to “a scrotum.” Hey, if you can’t laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?

Malala declines to weigh in on Spitgate 2021

Midway through the show, Kimmel took to the aisles to ask “viewer-submitted questions” of some of the audience’s most distinguished guests, starting with Malala Yousafzai. The Pakistani education activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate was asked for her take on whether Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine while promoting Olivia Wilde’s 2022 psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling . Obviously taken aback by the brazen silliness of the question, Yousafzai curtly yet politely replied, “I only talk about peace.” Now that is what we should expect from a Nobel Peace Prize recipient.

The Daniels deliver a frantic top-speed double speech

Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (aka the Daniels) accepted the award for Best Original Screenplay for Everything Everywhere All At Once by trading turns at the mic and trying to cram in as much speech as possible. Scheinert pretended he was about to call out all the mean teachers who gave him detention, then thanked the ones who changed his life instead. Kwan professed his love of storytelling amid a touching admission of imposter syndrome. The speech read as if they were afraid — like so many nominees before them — that they might be overlooked in the other categories, and wouldn’t get a chance back onstage, so they had to make the most of their moment. Little did they know.

Sarah Polley wins, Frances McDormand looms

Sarah Polley’s making this moving speech and you’ve just stoic Frances McDormand staring down on her the whole time #Oscars pic.twitter.com/KgzJ0X2nd9 — Will Mavity (@mavericksmovies) March 13, 2023

A spectre is haunting Sarah Polley — the spectre of Francis McDormand. The director took to the stage to accept the award for Best Adapted Screenplay on behalf of her 2022 film Women Talking .

Polley delivered a moving speech about the film’s message about people’s power to disagree while still coming together to build a better future. But she wasn’t the only center of attention. A gigantic screenshot of Frances McDormand, who starred in the film, loomed over Polley’s shoulder with an expression that bore a striking resemblance to Death from Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal by way of the Engineer from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus . Beautiful speech, but seriously, WTF was that about?

RRR composer gives his winner’s speech in song

RRR composer M. M. Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose took to the stage to accept the award for Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu.” Keeravaani, who professed his love for The Carpenters, sung his acceptance speech to the tune of their 1972 song “Top of the World.”

The Daniels return and win Best Director

The Daniels took to the Oscars stage to receive yet another award, this time for Best Director. Scheinert took the opportunity to thank his parents for encouraging his creativity, while Kwan delivered a passionate speech on the collaborative nature of genius and the inherent greatness within every person.

Brendan Fraser mixes whale metaphors in his Best Actor speech

Brendan Fraser accepted the award for Best Actor for his starring role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale . Through tears, Fraser thanked Aronofsky for “throwing him a creative lifeline” and praised the cast and crew of The Whale alongside the other nominees, all via a series of extended whale metaphors. Fraser’s victory was the brightest spot in a controversial film , marking the end of a very long and difficult comeback for the actor.

Michelle Yeoh wins Best Actress

Everything Everywhere All At Once continued its sweep, with Michelle Yeoh winning the award for Best Actress . (Which puts Everything Everywhere All At Once at three out of four of the acting awards — something that’s only happened two other times in Oscar history.)

Yeoh is the first Asian actor to win the Best Actress Oscar. She began her speech saying, “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams come true. And ladies… never let anybody tell you that you are past your prime.”

Everything Everywhere All At Once wins Best Picture

After sweeping the major categories all night, it wasn’t so much a surprise that the A24 multiverse dramedy picked up the top prize of the night . Victories are rarely this sweet.

“This is for my dad,” said producer Jonathan Wang, “who like so many immigrant parents, died young. He is so proud of me… not because of this, but because we made this movie with what he taught me to do: That no person is no important than profits, and no one is more important than anyone else.”

Harrison Ford gives Ke Huy Quan a big Temple of Doom hug

The producers of the 2023 Oscars knew what they were doing when they asked Ford to present the Best Picture Oscar — Everything Everywhere All at Once was the clear favorite for the win, and putting the legend on stage meant the potential for an adorable reunion with his former Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom co-star Ke Huy Quan. And that’s exactly what happened, minutes after the EEAAO cast took the stage for the Best Picture win. I mean, c’mon, this echo of their long-ago movie is a great moment in award-show history.

She spoke proudly of being an 'openly queer woman of colour' and told the audience 'there is indeed a place for us'.

Referring to her early days as a performer, she said: 'Imagine this little girl in the back seat of a white Ford Focus, look into her eyes.

'You see an openly queer woman of colour, an Afro-Latina, who found her strength in life through art. And that is, I think, what we’re here to celebrate.'

Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste - Best Original Score, 2021

Zendaya presented the trio with the Oscar for Best Original Score for their animated film Soul at the 93rd Oscars.

'You know what’s deep is God gave us 12 notes, it’s the same 12 notes that Duke Ellington had, that Bach had, Nina Simone,' Ross began.

'I want to point out that every gift is special. Every contribution with music that comes from the divine into the instruments into the film, into the minds, hearts and souls of every person who hears it, the stories that happen when you listen to it and watch it and the stories you share, the moments you make, the memories you create, man, it’s just so incredibly special. It’s just so incredibly special… we’re incredibly humbled and thankful. I’m thankful to God for those 12 notes.'

Lupita Nyong'o - Best Supporting Actress Oscars Speech, 2014

Nyong'o glided up to accept her award for her role in the harrowing Steve McQueen movie 12 Years A Slave, looking radiant wearing a Prada dress and headband which only added to the angelic nature of the speech. John Legend and Common - Best Original Song Oscars Speech, 2015

After a searing performance of their song 'Glory', which accompanied Ava DuVernay's Martin Luther King Jr. drama Selma , John Legend and Common took to the stage to accept their Oscar. The duo spoke about the parallels between the march for equal rights and justice acknowledged in the film and song and the people who continue fighting for their rights today. Legend used his platform to highlight the injustices in the American judicial system and urge for criminal justice reform.

Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney - Best Adapted Screenplay, 2017

The Moonlight director and writer gave an impassioned acceptance speech, encouraging young Black and LGBTQ+ people watching to have the confidence to tell their stories.

'This goes out to all those Black and brown boys and girls and non-gender conforming who don't see themselves, we're trying to show you, you and us. So thank you, this is for you,' said McCraney.

While Jenkins reminded viewers that the Academy and ACLU - America's biggest civil rights organisation - were there for them saying, 'All those people out there who feel like there's no mirror for you and your life is not reflected... we have your back and for the next four years we will not leave you alone and will not forget you.' Later on in the night, the two returned to the stage to accept the award for Best Picture, though were ultimately and understandably caught off guard after La La Land was announced as the wrong winner.

Frances McDormand - Best Actress Oscar Speech, 2018

'I'm hyperventilating a little bit, if I fall over pick me up because I've got some things to say,' began McDormand before paying tribute to her Three Billboards colleagues, her husband Joel Cohen and son Pedro McDormand Cohen before asking all the female nominees from every category in the room to stand with her. 'Meryl if you do it, everyone else will,' she said to Streep in the front row.

She then proceeded to educate ask the men in the room to meet with all the women they see standing to listen to their career ambitions and projects before mentioning two words, and subsequently enticing the audience at home to Google rapidly, 'inclusion rider' - a clause in an actor/filmmaker's contract that ensures a certain level of diversity in the cast and crew on a production.

The Most Entertaining Oscars Speeches

Ben affleck and matt damon - best original screenplay oscars speech, 1997.

Aged just 25 and 27, childhood friends Affleck and Damon won an Oscar for writing their film, Good Will Hunting. The pair shouted their speech, as they reeled off people to thank from Minnie Driver to Robin Williams to their mothers, escalated in volume as they became more excitable and aware of the time limit.

Julia Roberts - Best Actress Oscars Speech, 2001

The actress won the Best Actress Academy Award for portraying environmental lawyer Erin Brockovich in 2001 and accepted it with a hilarious speech which alternated between thanking everyone Roberts has ever met (she literally thanks 'anyone I've ever met in my whole life') at one point and battling with the behind the scenes Oscars crew keeping time on her speech: 'Man with the stick I see you!'

Olivia Colman - Best Actress Oscars Speech, 2019

When Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell announced the former Peep Show star as the winner and she was stunned into the backs of her seat, while being embraced and kissed by her husband, Ed on one side and a weeping Emma Stone on the other, we knew this was going to be a great speech.

Colman did not disappoint, starting her speech with, 'It's genuinely quite stressful, this is hilarious, I've got an Oscar', before poking her tongue out at the teleprompter when she was told to wrap up and simply pointing and saying 'Lady Gaga' at the star and her fellow nominee in the front row.

Daniel Kaluuya - Best Supporting Actor Speech, 2021

During the ceremony, the British actor won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah. In his speech he paid tribute to Chairman Fred Hampton, who he portrayed in the film, and his work in civil rights.

But he then thanked his parents in what could quite possibly be the funniest shoutout in Oscars' history.

‘I’d like to thank my mum,’ he said. ‘You gave me everything. You gave me your factory settings. So I could stand at my fullest height. Thank you so much for showing me myself, and there’s so much work to do. That’s on everyone in this room. This ain’t no single man job. I look at every single one of you. We’ve got work to do.'

At the end of his speech, the star thanked his parents for bringing him into the world, much to his family's shock, who were watching the ceremony live in London.

‘My mum and my dad...they had sex. It's amazing! I'm here!’ he said, before the crowd went wild with applause.

The Most Emotional Oscars Speeches

Troy kotsur - best supporting actor, 2022.

best oscars speeches

The actor collected his award for Coda , and made history as the first male deaf actor to win an Academy Award.

'It’s a tough journey as a Deaf actor,' he said during his speech. 'There’s so few opportunities out there, and [Marlee Matlin, his Coda co-star] kept on going. She was persistent. And then so was I with my own career as a stage actor. So here I am today.”

The actor continued, paying tribute to his father: 'My dad, he was the best signer in our family. But he was in a car accident, and he became paralysed from the neck down. And he no longer was able to sign. Dad, I learned so much from you. I’ll always love you. You are my hero.'

Gwyneth Paltrow - Best Actress Oscars Speech, 1999

Paltrow was famously tearful when she won an Oscar for her role in Shakespeare In Love in 1999. The star became the most emotional when paying tribute to her father Bruce Paltrow, who was in the audience with her mother Blythe Danner, and who was diagnosed with oral cancer in 1999. Paltrow passed away from cancer complications in 2002 aged 58.

Halle Berry - Best Actress Oscars Speech, 2002

Berry had tears running down her face when she reached the stage to accept her Academy Award for Monster's Ball , becoming the first Black woman to win the Best Actress award in the process. 'This moment is so much bigger than me,' Berry said as she struggled to speak through tears while recounting her acting heroes. 'It's for every faceless, nameless, woman of colour who now has the chance because this door tonight has been opened.'

Jamie Foxx - Best Actor Oscar Speech, 2005

Starting with some Ray Charles vocals in homage to the singer he portrayed in the Oscar-winning film, Foxx then thanked his daughter (who he brought to the Oscars that night) for telling him just before the award, 'If you don't win Dad, you're still good', before a heartfelt tribute to his grandmother, Marie, where Foxx struggled to hold back tears.

Heath Ledger - Best Supporting Actors Oscars Speech, 2009

In 2009, Ledger was posthumously awarded an Oscar for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight , a year after his death. The award was received on his behalf by his family, who said they had been 'truly overwhelmed' by the honour and respect attributed to Ledger and accepted it on behalf of his daughter with Michelle Williams, Matilda.

Viola Davis - Best Supporting Actress Oscar Speech, 2017

Davis was overcome with emotion as she delivered her Oscars speech for her role in Fences in 2017, especially when talking about the impact of her parents on her life and career. Emma Stone looked particularly teary-eyed at the end when Davis paid tribute to her husband Julius Tennon and their children. 'I'm so glad you are the foundation of my life,' Davis said as she wrapped up her speech.

The Most Political Oscars Speeches

Marlon brando - best actor oscars speech, 1973.

The actor won his award for The Godfather in 1973 however declined his award and gave the opportunity for a speech to actress Sacheen Littlefeather, who used the platform to criticise the depiction of Native Americans in Hollywood. She passed on the message that Brando couldn't accept the award because of the 'treatment of American Indians today by the film industry and on television and movie reruns'.

Michael Moore - Best Documentary Oscars Speech, 2003

Accepting his award for gun-control documentary Bowling for Columbine, director Michael Moore used his time on stage to criticise the George Bush presidency and Iraq War.

An impassioned Moore raised his voice as he said, 'Shame on you Mr Bush' while the audience roundly booed (though some applause was had) and high-profile celebrities like Adrien Brody looked on awkwardly.

Writing about his Oscars speech for The Hollywood Reporter, in 2017, Moore said: ' Later, my wife and I walked over to the Governors Ball. When I walked in, it was like the Red Sea parting. No one there wanted to be anywhere near the guy who got booed off the stage. One board member told me, "Wow, you really know how to ruin a standing ovation."'

However, he caveated that over the years he has a lot more of a positive reception to his speech than on the night in 2003.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Best Actor Oscar Speech, 2016

In 2016, the world waited with baited breath to see if The Revenant star would finally win an Oscar many thought he should have received years before. He did and nailed his speech in the process, using the platform to eloquently pay tribute to and urge protection of indigenous people while also asking for action on Climate Change, which he called 'the most urgent threat facing our entire species'.

Oh, we can't wait for the Oscars this weekend.

The Sweetest Oscars Speech

Brendan fraser - best actor oscar speech, 2023.

brendan fraser best actor oscar speech 2023

Brendan Fraser won the Oscar for Best Actor for his leading role in The Whale at the 95th Academy Awards. The actor came to the podium with tears in his eyes, and relayed a moving, whale and water themed speech that had everyone in the audience moved, telling his co-workers for the film: 'you laid your whale-sized hearts bare so we could see into your souls like no one else.'

Fraser found success in the late 1990s and 2000s, but after 20 years Fraser has experienced something of a comeback, telling the audience at the Oscars: ' Things they didn’t come easily to me...I just want to say thank you for this acknowledgement.'

Emerald Fennell - Best Original Screenplay Oscar Speech, 2021

Emerald Fennell won the Oscar for the Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman at the 93 rd Oscars, and adorably began her acceptance speech by revealing that she hadn’t actually written anything to say.

‘They said write a speech and I didn’t, because I just didn’t think this would happen, and I’m going to be in trouble with [producer] Stephen Soderbergh,’ she admitted.

‘He’s so heavy and he’s so cold!’ she joked about her Oscar on picking it up, adding: ‘So, the only speech I ever wrote was when I was 10, soI had a look to see if there was anything useful from it, but it mostly thanked Zack Morris from Saved By The Bell , my very supportive husband. ‘Unfortunately, he hasn’t been as much a part of my life as I’d hoped, and so that speech is not that useful.’

ABC, which has aired the Oscars since 1976, is televising the show live starting at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT — an hour earlier that usual . The network, which has begun to use the Oscars as a lead-out to showcase its top programming, will follow its coverage of the live ceremony with an original episode of  Abbott Elementary .

ABC’s time tweak also means that its annual pre-show will now run for 30 minutes — instead of the usual 90 — beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. As per usual, the main Oscar telecast will be rebroadcast in the Pacific Time zone in primetime after the live presentation.

Raj Kapoor will serve as showrunner and executive producer of the 96th Oscars, with Molly McNearney and Katy Mullan executive producers. Hamish Hamilton is directing.

Al Pacino reveals the reason he announced Oscars best picture the way he did

Al Pacino took the stage at the 96th Oscars to deliver the award for best picture, which went to "Oppenheimer," but Pacino's delivery of the winner arguably stole the show.

Whereas the acting nominees had long presentations during the March 10 ceremony, Pacino didn't read out the nominees for best picture before revealing who won. Over on social media, some saw the moment as "confusing" while others called it "Oscar-worthy" in its own right, but Pacino is now speaking out about the real reason he skipped over the other contenders for the prestigious award.

“There seems to be some controversy about my not mentioning every film by name last night before announcing the best picture award,” Pacino said in a statement through his reps obtained by Deadline . “I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony.

"I was honored to be a part of the evening and chose to follow the way they wished for this award to be presented," he continued.

On the night of the Academy Awards, the best picture presentation from Pacino appeared rushed. Instead of mentioning each movie by name, Pacino only said, "Ten wonderful films were nominated, but only one will take the award for best picture."

Then he gestured to his envelope. "I have to go to the envelope for that. Here it comes," he said, opening it up.

Looking at the paper, he started talking. "And my eyes see 'Oppenheimer,'" he said.

Some clapping emerged, but it seemed like Pacino was still speaking. "Yes. Yes," Pacino continued, reading the names of the produces. More clapping emerged before finally, "Oppenheimer" became, clearly, the winner.

The somewhat anticlimactic moment led to a spirited conversation online.

"Al Pacino announcing Oppenheimer’s best picture win with the casualness of announcing what he wants to eat for dinner at Chili’s is why I watch The Oscars," one X user wrote .

Another compared his tone to a bear stumbling out of a cave.

Viewers noticed how he skipped reading the nominations and cut straight what his "eyes" saw: "Oppenheimer."

"Al Pacino not even presenting the rest of the nominations and going straight to the winner is such a hilarious yet Oscar worthy performance in its own right," someone wrote .

Others weren't as taken with the moment, calling it "all kinds of awkward ."

Writer Spencer Althouse concluded it "couldn't have been more chaotic or confusing," but said he was still "obsessed."

Advocating for an Oscar Category for Stunts: The Efforts of The Fall Guy

T he star-studded presentation at the recent Academy Awards saw Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt advocating for an underrepresented group in the film industry—the stunt community. Although their speech hinted at their upcoming film The Fall Guy , their foremost goal was to petition the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences to recognize the pivotal role of stunt performers in cinema. This push for Oscar recognition for stunts was further emphasized in a compelling video package directed by David Leitch and Kelly McCormick, illustrating the importance of stunts in award-winning movies.

Following the Oscars, the premiere of The Fall Guy at SXSW saw Leitch, a former stuntman himself, share an optimistic view on the campaign’s progress. The film essentially serves as a homage to the stunt community, boasting extraordinary stunts within a narrative that acknowledges its on-set heroes. Both Gosling and Blunt utilized every public opportunity to call attention to the stunt community’s lack of Oscar recognition, shining a light on the immense risks these performers undertake for their craft.

The campaign for an Oscar category for stunts is not new; it has been an ongoing struggle dating back to 1991. Support from influential figures like John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski and Mission Impossible ‘s Christopher McQuarrie, along with initiatives like Vulture ’s Stunt Awards series, have rekindled interest in this cause. As Hollywood voices rally behind the stunt community, the potential for the creation of a new Oscar category looks more promising than ever.

Why is there no Oscar for stunts?

Despite decades of campaigning, no Oscar category currently exists for stunts due to various reasons, including the lengthy process for introducing a new category and navigating the Academy’s committee and board decision-making structures.

What would an Oscar for stunts entail?

An Oscar for stunts would involve recognition for the stunt director or coordinator, the performers, or the entire stunt team. Specific criteria and eligibility would need to be defined for the award to be instituted.

Who is leading the campaign for a stunts Oscar?

The campaign has involved various stakeholders, including director David Leitch, actors Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, and many other supporters from within the film industry.

What has the reaction been to the campaign?

There has been a lot of public support for the stunt community’s Oscar recognition, especially following the pointed advocacy seen in major film events and through media engagements.

How can an Oscar category for stunts be added?

A new Oscar category for stunts would require a formal proposal that outlines the qualifications and rules. After a rigorous vetting process by Academy committees, a final decision would be made by the Academy’s Board of Governors.

Conclusion:

The march towards an Oscar for stunts has been long and challenging, but the concerted and visible efforts led by the film The Fall Guy and its advocates have brought new vigor and attention to this campaign. With continued advocacy and support, the stunt community may soon receive the recognition it rightfully deserves from the Academy, honoring the daring and skillful contributions of these cinematic artists.
