Students have full access to resources in the Department of Biomedical Engineering by virtue of their status as students in the department. Additionally, they have access to, under the direct supervision of participating Radiation Oncology faculty, all clinical Radiation Oncology facilities located at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Miami. These include:
Linear accelerators (Varian) outfitted for image guided radiotherapy and a planned MR simulator, multiple treatment planning systems for external beam therapy and brachytherapy deployed on several workstations (Oncentra, Nucletron; Pinnacle, Philips; Eclipse, Varian), a high dose rate brachytherapy afterloader (Nucletron), a real time prostate seed implantation system (seedSelectron, Nucletron), cesium sources and related equipment for low dose brachytherapy, an array of calibration and quality assurance devices, and a department wide integrated radiotherapy electronic medical record and record and verify system (Aria, Varian). These facilities are staffed by 12 American Board of Radiology certified University of Miami faculty therapeutic radiological physicists with degrees in physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, and biomedical engineering (10 with PhD degree, 2 with MS degree).

Biomedical Physics PhD Admissions 2024
March 15, 2024
The Biomedical Physics (BMP) PhD program just completed its third admissions cycle. An admissions committee of faculty and students reviewed 98 applications from students around the world, of whom 24 were selected to participate in virtual interviews on February 13-15. We then identified six students to whom admission was offered, and all have accepted! Our BMP 2024 class, joining us this September, will be:

This accreditation signifies the commitment to excellence and quality in education that our program provides.
After undergoing a rigorous evaluation process, our program has met the ambitious standards set forth by accrediting bodies, ensuring that our students receive a top-notch education in medical physics. This accreditation aids to further validate the quality of our curriculum and enhances the value of the degrees earned by our graduates while opening new opportunities for our students, as it provides them with the assurance that they are receiving a quality education that meets professional standards.

LSU Chemistry Stockroom Coordinator Receives 2024 Technician of the Year Award

Nicole Reid, Organic Chemistry Stockroom Coordinator, LSU Department of Chemistry
BATON ROUGE - The American Chemical Society, or ACS, Baton Rouge Local Section, has honored Nicole Reid, the Organic Chemistry Stockroom Coordinator at the LSU Department of Chemistry, with the 2024 Technician of the Year Award. The accolade recognizes Reid’s service to the department and her efforts in supporting the organic chemistry teaching laboratories, all while fostering a safe and conducive learning environment.
Reid, who joined LSU Chemistry in Spring 2022, holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with minors in Mathematics and Biology from Louisiana Christian University and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in STEM Education from LSU Shreveport. Her professional background includes several years of teaching math and sciences, including AP Chemistry, in the K-12 setting.
Reflecting on her transition from teaching to her current role, Nicole stated, “I thought I would miss the classroom and teaching, but now I get the best of both worlds: I work with students, prepare the teaching labs, and make solutions. I don’t have to grade papers, but I still get to be part of the teaching and learning process.”
Reid’s passion for organization and chemistry shines through her work. She ensures that 15 sections of organic chemistry teaching labs, each with about 32 students, are well-equipped and prepared each semester. She also manages the ordering, maintaining, and distributing of chemical supplies, laboratory materials, and scientific equipment, which directly contributes to the quality of education students receive.
Drawing on her years as a certified educator, Reid can often be seen walking through the labs, ensuring everything flows smoothly, supporting the needs of the students, teaching assistants, and instructors. Reid also assists Assistant Professor Sviatoslav Baranets with hosting the regional U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Exam at LSU.
“I am deeply thankful for receiving this award. It makes me feel truly appreciated for my hard work and reinforces my daily efforts in creating a productive learning environment,” Reid stated. “And yes, my 'teacher voice' is still very much here, reminding everyone to stay focused and keep learning!”
Reid’s commitment to maintaining a well-organized stockroom and providing essential support has been integral to the success of the department’s teaching labs. The LSU Department of Chemistry is proud to have Mrs. Nicole Reid as a vital team member, and faculty and students highly value her contributions.

The medical physics and health physics groups research the applications of radiation technology to the health-care, national defense, and nuclear energy industries. All graduate students in the Medical Physics and Health Physics Program are required to complete a research thesis (MS) or dissertation (PhD) in their field of study.

PhD students in the program will take two qualify exams. The first one is the general qualify exam required by the Department of Biomedical Engineering, usually after two-semester study and before the third semester starts. The second qualify exam is required by the Medical Physics Graduate Program, usually after all coursework has been completed.
3. Apply. The goal of the Medical Physics Graduate Program at the University of Miami is to train students to develop the necessary academic framework as well as a thorough practical understanding in medical physics, including areas of diagnostic radiologic physics, health physics, nuclear medicine, and a designated focus on radiation therapy.

Application Instructions (MS and PhD Degrees) Applications are due by January 1, for consideration for admission in Fall. All application materials, including recommendation letters and transcripts, must arrive by this deadline. Applications are typically only considered for Fall semester admissions; admission in a Spring semester is rare.
