The methodology should be clear and detailed enough to allow other researchers to replicate the study.

The results section presents the findings of the study in a clear and objective manner. It should provide a detailed description of the data and statistics used to answer the research question or test the hypothesis. Tables, graphs, and figures may be included to help visualize the data and illustrate the key findings.

The discussion section interprets the results of the study and explains their significance or relevance to the research question or problem. It should also compare the current findings with those of previous studies and identify the implications for future research or practice. The discussion should be based on the results presented in the previous section and should avoid speculation or unfounded conclusions.

The conclusion summarizes the key findings of the study and restates the main argument or thesis presented in the introduction. It should also provide a brief overview of the contributions of the study to the field of research and the implications for practice or policy.

The references section lists all the sources cited in the research report, following a specific citation style, such as APA or MLA.

The appendices section includes any additional material, such as data tables, figures, or instruments used in the study, that could not be included in the main text due to space limitations.

Field Report

Experimental Report

Case Study Report

Literature Review Report

For many students, crafting a strong research paper from scratch can feel like a daunting task – and rightly so! In this post, we’ll unpack what a research paper is, what it needs to do , and how to write one – in three easy steps. 🙂

Let’s start by asking the most important question, “ What is a research paper? ”.

Simply put, a research paper is a scholarly written work where the writer (that’s you!) answers a specific question (this is called a research question ) through evidence-based arguments . Evidence-based is the keyword here. In other words, a research paper is different from an essay or other writing assignments that draw from the writer’s personal opinions or experiences. With a research paper, it’s all about building your arguments based on evidence (we’ll talk more about that evidence a little later).

Now, it’s worth noting that there are many different types of research papers , including analytical papers (the type I just described), argumentative papers, and interpretative papers. Here, we’ll focus on analytical papers , as these are some of the most common – but if you’re keen to learn about other types of research papers, be sure to check out the rest of the blog .

With that basic foundation laid, let’s get down to business and look at how to write a research paper .

Overview: The 3-Stage Process

While there are, of course, many potential approaches you can take to write a research paper, there are typically three stages to the writing process. So, in this tutorial, we’ll present a straightforward three-step process that we use when working with students at Grad Coach.

These three steps are:

  • Finding a research topic and reviewing the existing literature
  • Developing a provisional structure and outline for your paper, and
  • Writing up your initial draft and then refining it iteratively

Let’s dig into each of these.

Step 1: Find a topic and review the literature

As we mentioned earlier, in a research paper, you, as the researcher, will try to answer a question . More specifically, that’s called a research question , and it sets the direction of your entire paper. What’s important to understand though is that you’ll need to answer that research question with the help of high-quality sources – for example, journal articles, government reports, case studies, and so on. We’ll circle back to this in a minute.

The first stage of the research process is deciding on what your research question will be and then reviewing the existing literature (in other words, past studies and papers) to see what they say about that specific research question. In some cases, your professor may provide you with a predetermined research question (or set of questions). However, in many cases, you’ll need to find your own research question within a certain topic area.

Finding a strong research question hinges on identifying a meaningful research gap – in other words, an area that’s lacking in existing research. There’s a lot to unpack here, so if you wanna learn more, check out the plain-language explainer video below.

Once you’ve figured out which question (or questions) you’ll attempt to answer in your research paper, you’ll need to do a deep dive into the existing literature – this is called a “ literature search ”. Again, there are many ways to go about this, but your most likely starting point will be Google Scholar .

If you’re new to Google Scholar, think of it as Google for the academic world. You can start by simply entering a few different keywords that are relevant to your research question and it will then present a host of articles for you to review. What you want to pay close attention to here is the number of citations for each paper – the more citations a paper has, the more credible it is (generally speaking – there are some exceptions, of course).

Ideally, what you’re looking for are well-cited papers that are highly relevant to your topic. That said, keep in mind that citations are a cumulative metric , so older papers will often have more citations than newer papers – just because they’ve been around for longer. So, don’t fixate on this metric in isolation – relevance and recency are also very important.

Beyond Google Scholar, you’ll also definitely want to check out academic databases and aggregators such as Science Direct, PubMed, JStor and so on. These will often overlap with the results that you find in Google Scholar, but they can also reveal some hidden gems – so, be sure to check them out.

Once you’ve worked your way through all the literature, you’ll want to catalogue all this information in some sort of spreadsheet so that you can easily recall who said what, when and within what context. If you’d like, we’ve got a free literature spreadsheet that helps you do exactly that.

Don’t fixate on an article’s citation count in isolation - relevance (to your research question) and recency are also very important.

Step 2: Develop a structure and outline

With your research question pinned down and your literature digested and catalogued, it’s time to move on to planning your actual research paper .

It might sound obvious, but it’s really important to have some sort of rough outline in place before you start writing your paper. So often, we see students eagerly rushing into the writing phase, only to land up with a disjointed research paper that rambles on in multiple

Now, the secret here is to not get caught up in the fine details . Realistically, all you need at this stage is a bullet-point list that describes (in broad strokes) what you’ll discuss and in what order. It’s also useful to remember that you’re not glued to this outline – in all likelihood, you’ll chop and change some sections once you start writing, and that’s perfectly okay. What’s important is that you have some sort of roadmap in place from the start.

You need to have a rough outline in place before you start writing your paper - or you’ll end up with a disjointed research paper that rambles on.

At this stage you might be wondering, “ But how should I structure my research paper? ”. Well, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution here, but in general, a research paper will consist of a few relatively standardised components:

  • Introduction
  • Literature review
  • Methodology

Let’s take a look at each of these.

First up is the introduction section . As the name suggests, the purpose of the introduction is to set the scene for your research paper. There are usually (at least) four ingredients that go into this section – these are the background to the topic, the research problem and resultant research question , and the justification or rationale. The next section of your research paper will typically be your literature review . Remember all that literature you worked through earlier? Well, this is where you’ll present your interpretation of all that content . You’ll do this by writing about recent trends, developments, and arguments within the literature – but more specifically, those that are relevant to your research question . The literature review can oftentimes seem a little daunting, even to seasoned researchers, so be sure to check out our extensive collection of literature review content here .

With the introduction and lit review out of the way, the next section of your paper is the research methodology . In a nutshell, the methodology section should describe to your reader what you did (beyond just reviewing the existing literature) to answer your research question. For example, what data did you collect, how did you collect that data, how did you analyse that data and so on? For each choice, you’ll also need to justify why you chose to do it that way, and what the strengths and weaknesses of your approach were.

Now, it’s worth mentioning that for some research papers, this aspect of the project may be a lot simpler . For example, you may only need to draw on secondary sources (in other words, existing data sets). In some cases, you may just be asked to draw your conclusions from the literature search itself (in other words, there may be no data analysis at all). But, if you are required to collect and analyse data, you’ll need to pay a lot of attention to the methodology section. By this stage of your paper, you will have explained what your research question is, what the existing literature has to say about that question, and how you analysed additional data to try to answer your question. So, the natural next step is to present your analysis of that data . This section is usually called the “results” or “analysis” section and this is where you’ll showcase your findings.

Depending on your school’s requirements, you may need to present and interpret the data in one section – or you might split the presentation and the interpretation into two sections. In the latter case, your “results” section will just describe the data, and the “discussion” is where you’ll interpret that data and explicitly link your analysis back to your research question. If you’re not sure which approach to take, check in with your professor or take a look at past papers to see what the norms are for your programme.

Alright – once you’ve presented and discussed your results, it’s time to wrap it up . This usually takes the form of the “ conclusion ” section. In the conclusion, you’ll need to highlight the key takeaways from your study and close the loop by explicitly answering your research question. Again, the exact requirements here will vary depending on your programme (and you may not even need a conclusion section at all) – so be sure to check with your professor if you’re unsure.

Step 3: Write and refine

Finally, it’s time to get writing. All too often though, students hit a brick wall right about here… So, how do you avoid this happening to you?

Well, there’s a lot to be said when it comes to writing a research paper (or any sort of academic piece), but we’ll share three practical tips to help you get started.

First and foremost , it’s essential to approach your writing as an iterative process. In other words, you need to start with a really messy first draft and then polish it over multiple rounds of editing. Don’t waste your time trying to write a perfect research paper in one go. Instead, take the pressure off yourself by adopting an iterative approach.

Secondly , it’s important to always lean towards critical writing , rather than descriptive writing. What does this mean? Well, at the simplest level, descriptive writing focuses on the “ what ”, while critical writing digs into the “ so what ” – in other words, the implications . Last but not least, you’ll need to get your referencing right. Specifically, you’ll need to provide credible, correctly formatted citations for the statements you make. This review covers the basic elements of a research report. This is a general guide for what you will see in journal articles or dissertations. This format assumes a mixed methods study, but you can leave out either quantitative or qualitative sections if you only used a single methodology.

This review is divided into sections for easy reference. There are five MAJOR parts of a Research Report:

1.    Introduction 2.    Review of Literature 3.    Methods 4.    Results 5.    Discussion

As a general guide, the Introduction, Review of Literature, and Methods should be about 1/3 of your paper, Discussion 1/3, then Results 1/3.

Section 1 : Cover Sheet (APA format cover sheet) optional, if required.

Section 2: Abstract (a basic summary of the report, including sample, treatment, design, results, and implications) (≤ 150 words) optional, if required.

Section 3 : Introduction (1-3 paragraphs) •    Basic introduction •    Supportive statistics (can be from periodicals) •    Statement of Purpose •    Statement of Significance

Section 4 : Research question(s) or hypotheses •    An overall research question (optional) •    A quantitative-based (hypotheses) •    A qualitative-based (research questions) Note: You will generally have more than one, especially if using hypotheses.

Section 5: Review of Literature ▪    Should be organized by subheadings ▪    Should adequately support your study using supporting, related, and/or refuting evidence ▪    Is a synthesis, not a collection of individual summaries

Section 6: Methods ▪    Procedure: Describe data gathering or participant recruitment, including IRB approval ▪    Sample: Describe the sample or dataset, including basic demographics ▪    Setting: Describe the setting, if applicable (generally only in qualitative designs) ▪    Treatment: If applicable, describe, in detail, how you implemented the treatment ▪    Instrument: Describe, in detail, how you implemented the instrument; Describe the reliability and validity associated with the instrument ▪    Data Analysis: Describe type of procedure (t-test, interviews, etc.) and software (if used)

Section 7: Results ▪    Restate Research Question 1 (Quantitative) ▪    Describe results ▪    Restate Research Question 2 (Qualitative) ▪    Describe results

Section 8: Discussion ▪    Restate Overall Research Question ▪    Describe how the results, when taken together, answer the overall question ▪    ***Describe how the results confirm or contrast the literature you reviewed

Section 9: Recommendations (if applicable, generally related to practice)

Section 10: Limitations ▪    Discuss, in several sentences, the limitations of this study. ▪    Research Design (overall, then info about the limitations of each separately) ▪    Sample ▪    Instrument/s ▪    Other limitations

Section 11: Conclusion (A brief closing summary)

Section 12: References (APA format)

A research report is one big argument about how and why you came up with your conclusions. To make it a convincing argument, a typical guiding structure has developed. In the different chapters, there are distinct issues that need to be addressed to explain to the reader why your conclusions are valid. The governing principle for writing the report is full disclosure: to explain everything and ensure replicability by another researcher.

It is not fair to say that no one writes anymore. Just about everyone writes text messages, brief emails, or social media posts every single day. Yet, most people don't have a lot of practice with the formal, organized writing required for a good academic research paper. This guide contains links to a variety of resources that can help demystify the process. Some of these resources are intended for teachers; they contain exercises, activities, and teaching strategies. Other resources are intended for direct use by students who are struggling to write papers, or are looking for tips to make the process go more smoothly.

The resources in this section are designed to help students understand the different types of research papers, the general research process, and how to manage their time. Below, you'll find links from university writing centers, the trusted Purdue Online Writing Lab, and more.

What is an Academic Research Paper?

"Genre and the Research Paper" (Purdue OWL)

There are different types of research papers. Different types of scholarly questions will lend themselves to one format or another. This is a brief introduction to the two main genres of research paper: analytic and argumentative. 

"7 Most Popular Types of Research Papers" (Personal-writer.com)

This resource discusses formats that high school students commonly encounter, such as the compare and contrast essay and the definitional essay. Please note that the inclusion of this link is not an endorsement of this company's paid service.

How to Prepare and Plan Out Writing a Research Paper

Teachers can give their students a step-by-step guide like these to help them understand the different steps of the research paper process. These guides can be combined with the time management tools in the next subsection to help students come up with customized calendars for completing their papers.

"Ten Steps for Writing Research Papers" (American University)  

This resource from American University is a comprehensive guide to the research paper writing process, and includes examples of proper research questions and thesis topics.

"Steps in Writing a Research Paper" (SUNY Empire State College)

This guide breaks the research paper process into 11 steps. Each "step" links to a separate page, which describes the work entailed in completing it.

How to Manage Time Effectively

The links below will help students determine how much time is necessary to complete a paper. If your sources are not available online or at your local library, you'll need to leave extra time for the Interlibrary Loan process. Remember that, even if you do not need to consult secondary sources, you'll still need to leave yourself ample time to organize your thoughts.

"Research Paper Planner: Timeline" (Baylor University)

This interactive resource from Baylor University creates a suggested writing schedule based on how much time a student has to work on the assignment.

"Research Paper Planner" (UCLA)

UCLA's library offers this step-by-step guide to the research paper writing process, which also includes a suggested planning calendar.

There's a reason teachers spend a long time talking about choosing a good topic. Without a good topic and a well-formulated research question, it is almost impossible to write a clear and organized paper. The resources below will help you generate ideas and formulate precise questions.

"How to Select a Research Topic" (Univ. of Michigan-Flint)

This resource is designed for college students who are struggling to come up with an appropriate topic. A student who uses this resource and still feels unsure about his or her topic should consult the course instructor for further personalized assistance.

"25 Interesting Research Paper Topics to Get You Started" (Kibin)

This resource, which is probably most appropriate for high school students, provides a list of specific topics to help get students started. It is broken into subsections, such as "paper topics on local issues."

"Writing a Good Research Question" (Grand Canyon University)

This introduction to research questions includes some embedded videos, as well as links to scholarly articles on research questions. This resource would be most appropriate for teachers who are planning lessons on research paper fundamentals.

"How to Write a Research Question the Right Way" (Kibin)

This student-focused resource provides more detail on writing research questions. The language is accessible, and there are embedded videos and examples of good and bad questions.

It is important to have a rough hypothesis or thesis in mind at the beginning of the research process. People who have a sense of what they want to say will have an easier time sorting through scholarly sources and other information. The key, of course, is not to become too wedded to the draft hypothesis or thesis. Just about every working thesis gets changed during the research process.

CrashCourse Video: "Sociology Research Methods" (YouTube)

Although this video is tailored to sociology students, it is applicable to students in a variety of social science disciplines. This video does a good job demonstrating the connection between the brainstorming that goes into selecting a research question and the formulation of a working hypothesis.

"How to Write a Thesis Statement for an Analytical Essay" (YouTube)

Students writing analytical essays will not develop the same type of working hypothesis as students who are writing research papers in other disciplines. For these students, developing the working thesis may happen as a part of the rough draft (see the relevant section below). 

"Research Hypothesis" (Oakland Univ.)

This resource provides some examples of hypotheses in social science disciplines like Political Science and Criminal Justice. These sample hypotheses may also be useful for students in other soft social sciences and humanities disciplines like History.

When grading a research paper, instructors look for a consistent methodology. This section will help you understand different methodological approaches used in research papers. Students will get the most out of these resources if they use them to help prepare for conversations with teachers or discussions in class.

"Types of Research Designs" (USC)

A "research design," used for complex papers, is related to the paper's method. This resource contains introductions to a variety of popular research designs in the social sciences. Although it is not the most intuitive site to read, the information here is very valuable. 

"Major Research Methods" (YouTube)

Although this video is a bit on the dry side, it provides a comprehensive overview of the major research methodologies in a format that might be more accessible to students who have struggled with textbooks or other written resources.

"Humanities Research Strategies" (USC)

This is a portal where students can learn about four methodological approaches for humanities papers: Historical Methodologies, Textual Criticism, Conceptual Analysis, and the Synoptic method.

"Selected Major Social Science Research Methods: Overview" (National Academies Press)

This appendix from the book  Using Science as Evidence in Public Policy , printed by National Academies Press, introduces some methods used in social science papers.

"Organizing Your Social Sciences Research Paper: 6. The Methodology" (USC)

This resource from the University of Southern California's library contains tips for writing a methodology section in a research paper.

How to Determine the Best Methodology for You

Anyone who is new to writing research papers should be sure to select a method in consultation with their instructor. These resources can be used to help prepare for that discussion. They may also be used on their own by more advanced students.

"Choosing Appropriate Research Methodologies" (Palgrave Study Skills)

This friendly and approachable resource from Palgrave Macmillan can be used by students who are just starting to think about appropriate methodologies.

"How to Choose Your Research Methods" (NFER (UK))

This is another approachable resource students can use to help narrow down the most appropriate methods for their research projects.

The resources in this section introduce the process of gathering scholarly sources and collecting evidence. You'll find a range of material here, from introductory guides to advanced explications best suited to college students. Please consult the LitCharts  How to Do Academic Research guide for a more comprehensive list of resources devoted to finding scholarly literature.

Students who have access to library websites with detailed research guides should start there, but people who do not have access to those resources can begin their search for secondary literature here.

"Gathering Appropriate Information" (Texas Gateway)

This resource from the Texas Gateway for online resources introduces students to the research process, and contains interactive exercises. The level of complexity is suitable for middle school, high school, and introductory college classrooms.

"An Overview of Quantitative and Qualitative Data Collection Methods" (NSF)

This PDF from the National Science Foundation goes into detail about best practices and pitfalls in data collection across multiple types of methodologies.

"Social Science Methods for Data Collection and Analysis" (Swiss FIT)

This resource is appropriate for advanced undergraduates or teachers looking to create lessons on research design and data collection. It covers techniques for gathering data via interviews, observations, and other methods.

"Collecting Data by In-depth Interviewing" (Leeds Univ.)

This resource contains enough information about conducting interviews to make it useful for teachers who want to create a lesson plan, but is also accessible enough for college juniors or seniors to make use of it on their own.

There is no "one size fits all" outlining technique. Some students might devote all their energy and attention to the outline in order to avoid the paper. Other students may benefit from being made to sit down and organize their thoughts into a lengthy sentence outline. The resources in this section include strategies and templates for multiple types of outlines. 

"Topic vs. Sentence Outlines" (UC Berkeley)

This resource introduces two basic approaches to outlining: the shorter topic-based approach, and the longer, more detailed sentence-based approach. This resource also contains videos on how to develop paper paragraphs from the sentence-based outline.

"Types of Outlines and Samples" (Purdue OWL)

The Purdue Online Writing Lab's guide is a slightly less detailed discussion of different types of outlines. It contains several sample outlines.

"Writing An Outline" (Austin C.C.)

This resource from a community college contains sample outlines from an American history class that students can use as models.

"How to Structure an Outline for a College Paper" (YouTube)

This brief (sub-2 minute) video from the ExpertVillage YouTube channel provides a model of outline writing for students who are struggling with the idea.

"Outlining" (Harvard)

This is a good resource to consult after completing a draft outline. It offers suggestions for making sure your outline avoids things like unnecessary repetition.

As with outlines, rough drafts can take on many different forms. These resources introduce teachers and students to the various approaches to writing a rough draft. This section also includes resources that will help you cite your sources appropriately according to the MLA, Chicago, and APA style manuals.

"Creating a Rough Draft for a Research Paper" (Univ. of Minnesota)

This resource is useful for teachers in particular, as it provides some suggested exercises to help students with writing a basic rough draft. 

Rough Draft Assignment (Duke of Definition)

This sample assignment, with a brief list of tips, was developed by a high school teacher who runs a very successful and well-reviewed page of educational resources.

"Creating the First Draft of Your Research Paper" (Concordia Univ.)

This resource will be helpful for perfectionists or procrastinators, as it opens by discussing the problem of avoiding writing. It also provides a short list of suggestions meant to get students writing.

Using Proper Citations

There is no such thing as a rough draft of a scholarly citation. These links to the three major citation guides will ensure that your citations follow the correct format. Please consult the LitCharts How to Cite Your Sources guide for more resources.

Chicago Manual of Style Citation Guide

Some call  The Chicago Manual of Style , which was first published in 1906, "the editors' Bible." The manual is now in its 17th edition, and is popular in the social sciences, historical journals, and some other fields in the humanities.

APA Citation Guide

According to the American Psychological Association, this guide was developed to aid reading comprehension, clarity of communication, and to reduce bias in language in the social and behavioral sciences. Its first full edition was published in 1952, and it is now in its sixth edition.

MLA Citation Guide

The Modern Language Association style is used most commonly within the liberal arts and humanities. The  MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing  was first published in 1985 and (as of 2008) is in its third edition.

Any professional scholar will tell you that the best research papers are made in the revision stage. No matter how strong your research question or working thesis, it is not possible to write a truly outstanding paper without devoting energy to revision. These resources provide examples of revision exercises for the classroom, as well as tips for students working independently.

"The Art of Revision" (Univ. of Arizona)

This resource provides a wealth of information and suggestions for both students and teachers. There is a list of suggested exercises that teachers might use in class, along with a revision checklist that is useful for teachers and students alike.

"Script for Workshop on Revision" (Vanderbilt University)

Vanderbilt's guide for leading a 50-minute revision workshop can serve as a model for teachers who wish to guide students through the revision process during classtime. 

"Revising Your Paper" (Univ. of Washington)

This detailed handout was designed for students who are beginning the revision process. It discusses different approaches and methods for revision, and also includes a detailed list of things students should look for while they revise.

"Revising Drafts" (UNC Writing Center)

This resource is designed for students and suggests things to look for during the revision process. It provides steps for the process and has a FAQ for students who have questions about why it is important to revise.

Conferencing with Writing Tutors and Instructors

No writer is so good that he or she can't benefit from meeting with instructors or peer tutors. These resources from university writing, learning, and communication centers provide suggestions for how to get the most out of these one-on-one meetings.

"Getting Feedback" (UNC Writing Center)

This very helpful resource talks about how to ask for feedback during the entire writing process. It contains possible questions that students might ask when developing an outline, during the revision process, and after the final draft has been graded.

"Prepare for Your Tutoring Session" (Otis College of Art and Design)

This guide from a university's student learning center contains a lot of helpful tips for getting the most out of working with a writing tutor.

"The Importance of Asking Your Professor" (Univ. of Waterloo)

This article from the university's Writing and Communication Centre's blog contains some suggestions for how and when to get help from professors and Teaching Assistants.

Once you've revised your first draft, you're well on your way to handing in a polished paper. These resources—each of them produced by writing professionals at colleges and universities—outline the steps required in order to produce a final draft. You'll find proofreading tips and checklists in text and video form.

"Developing a Final Draft of a Research Paper" (Univ. of Minnesota)

While this resource contains suggestions for revision, it also features a couple of helpful checklists for the last stages of completing a final draft.

Basic Final Draft Tips and Checklist (Univ. of Maryland-University College)

This short and accessible resource, part of UMUC's very thorough online guide to writing and research, contains a very basic checklist for students who are getting ready to turn in their final drafts.

Final Draft Checklist (Everett C.C.)

This is another accessible final draft checklist, appropriate for both high school and college students. It suggests reading your essay aloud at least once.

"How to Proofread Your Final Draft" (YouTube)

This video (approximately 5 minutes), produced by Eastern Washington University, gives students tips on proofreading final drafts.

"Proofreading Tips" (Georgia Southern-Armstrong)

This guide will help students learn how to spot common errors in their papers. It suggests focusing on content and editing for grammar and mechanics.

This final set of resources is intended specifically for high school and college instructors. It provides links to unit plans and classroom exercises that can help improve students' research and writing skills. You'll find resources that give an overview of the process, along with activities that focus on how to begin and how to carry out research. 

"Research Paper Complete Resources Pack" (Teachers Pay Teachers)

This packet of assignments, rubrics, and other resources is designed for high school students. The resources in this packet are aligned to Common Core standards.

"Research Paper—Complete Unit" (Teachers Pay Teachers)

This packet of assignments, notes, PowerPoints, and other resources has a 4/4 rating with over 700 ratings. It is designed for high school teachers, but might also be useful to college instructors who work with freshmen.

"Teaching Students to Write Good Papers" (Yale)

This resource from Yale's Center for Teaching and Learning is designed for college instructors, and it includes links to appropriate activities and exercises.

"Research Paper Writing: An Overview" (CUNY Brooklyn)

CUNY Brooklyn offers this complete lesson plan for introducing students to research papers. It includes an accompanying set of PowerPoint slides.

"Lesson Plan: How to Begin Writing a Research Paper" (San Jose State Univ.)

This lesson plan is designed for students in the health sciences, so teachers will have to modify it for their own needs. It includes a breakdown of the brainstorming, topic selection, and research question process. 

"Quantitative Techniques for Social Science Research" (Univ. of Pittsburgh)

This is a set of PowerPoint slides that can be used to introduce students to a variety of quantitative methods used in the social sciences.

Research reports

This resource will help you identify the common elements and basic format of a research report.

Research reports generally follow a similar structure and have common elements, each with a particular purpose. Learn more about each of these elements below.

Common elements of reports

Your title should be brief, topic-specific, and informative, clearly indicating the purpose and scope of your study. Include key words in your title so that search engines can easily access your work. For example:  Measurement of water around Station Pier.

An abstract is a concise summary that helps readers to quickly assess the content and direction of your paper. It should be brief, written in a single paragraph and cover: the scope and purpose of your report; an overview of methodology; a summary of the main findings or results; principal conclusions or significance of the findings; and recommendations made.

The information in the abstract must be presented in the same order as it is in your report. The abstract is usually written last when you have developed your arguments and synthesised the results.

The introduction creates the context for your research. It should provide sufficient background to allow the reader to understand and evaluate your study without needing to refer to previous publications. After reading the introduction your reader should understand exactly what your research is about, what you plan to do, why you are undertaking this research and which methods you have used. Introductions generally include:

  • The rationale for the present study. Why are you interested in this topic? Why is this topic worth investigating?
  • Key terms and definitions.
  • An outline of the research questions and hypotheses; the assumptions or propositions that your research will test.

Not all research reports have a separate literature review section. In shorter research reports, the review is usually part of the Introduction.

A literature review is a critical survey of recent relevant research in a particular field. The review should be a selection of carefully organised, focused and relevant literature that develops a narrative ‘story’ about your topic. Your review should answer key questions about the literature:

  • What is the current state of knowledge on the topic?
  • What differences in approaches / methodologies are there?
  • Where are the strengths and weaknesses of the research?
  • What further research is needed? The review may identify a gap in the literature which provides a rationale for your study and supports your research questions and methodology.

The review is not just a summary of all you have read. Rather, it must develop an argument or a point of view that supports your chosen methodology and research questions.

The purpose of this section is to detail how you conducted your research so that others can understand and replicate your approach.

You need to briefly describe the subjects (if appropriate), any equipment or materials used and the approach taken. If the research method or method of data analysis is commonly used within your field of study, then simply reference the procedure. If, however, your methods are new or controversial then you need to describe them in more detail and provide a rationale for your approach. The methodology is written in the past tense and should be as concise as possible.

This section is a concise, factual summary of your findings, listed under headings appropriate to your research questions. It’s common to use tables and graphics. Raw data or details about the method of statistical analysis used should be included in the Appendices.

Present your results in a consistent manner. For example, if you present the first group of results as percentages, it will be confusing for the reader and difficult to make comparisons of data if later results are presented as fractions or as decimal values.

In general, you won’t discuss your results here. Any analysis of your results usually occurs in the Discussion section.

Notes on visual data representation:

  • Graphs and tables may be used to reveal trends in your data, but they must be explained and referred to in adjacent accompanying text.
  • Figures and tables do not simply repeat information given in the text: they summarise, amplify or complement it.
  • Graphs are always referred to as ‘Figures’, and both axes must be clearly labelled.
  • Tables must be numbered, and they must be able to stand-alone or make sense without your reader needing to read all of the accompanying text.

The Discussion responds to the hypothesis or research question. This section is where you interpret your results, account for your findings and explain their significance within the context of other research. Consider the adequacy of your sampling techniques, the scope and long-term implications of your study, any problems with data collection or analysis and any assumptions on which your study was based. This is also the place to discuss any disappointing results and address limitations.

Checklist for the discussion

  • To what extent was each hypothesis supported?
  • To what extent are your findings validated or supported by other research?
  • Were there unexpected variables that affected your results?
  • On reflection, was your research method appropriate?
  • Can you account for any differences between your results and other studies?

Conclusions in research reports are generally fairly short and should follow on naturally from points raised in the Discussion. In this section you should discuss the significance of your findings. To what extent and in what ways are your findings useful or conclusive? Is further research required? If so, based on your research experience, what suggestions could you make about improvements to the scope or methodology of future studies?

Appendices (singular ‘Appendix’) provide supporting material to your project. Examples of such materials include:

Different types of data are presented in separate appendices. Each appendix must be titled, labelled with a number or letter, and referred to in the body of the report.

Engage stakeholders

Stakeholders are people who are invested in the program or potentially affected by the evaluation. Stakeholders can play a key role by offering input throughout the evaluation process to ensure effective and useful reporting of evaluation results.

You can engage stakeholders:

  • During the planning phase. Stakeholders can help determine the intended use of the evaluation findings, identify potential primary users of findings, and help develop a reporting and dissemination plan.
  • Once data have been collected. Stakeholders can review interim findings, interpret data, help prepare findings, and to help develop potential recommendations.
  • When developing the evaluation report. Stakeholders can help define the audience, identify any potential uses of the information, and ensure report findings meet the evaluation purpose.

Revisit the purpose of your evaluation

The purpose determines how the evaluation report and findings are used, who the users are, and the most appropriate type of reporting. There may be multiple purposes for conducting an evaluation.

Two common reasons for evaluating CDC-funded programs are to guide program improvement and to ensure program effectiveness.

Consider and define the target audience of your evaluation report and findings.

  • Who are the intended primary users or the specific stakeholders who will most likely use the findings?
  • Is the target audience the funding agency of the program, people who are served by the program, or key legislators or decision makers in your local government?

Evaluation findings can be presented differently depending on the target audience and primary evaluation users. Some things to keep in mind about your audience are:

  • Effective communication channels. Identify the appropriate, preferred, and commonly used channels of communicating with your audience.
  • Desired action. Consider what action you want the audience to take and what is within their sphere of influence. Explore how the target audience makes decisions or decides to take action on the basis of new information.
  • Technical expertise or comprehension. Reflect on the level of familiarity the audience has with the subject matter and tailor the level of language to meet their comfort level. Use plain language over more technical language.
  • Cultural appropriateness. Ensure that reports are culturally appropriate for the audience.
  • Perceptions and expectations. Identify the audience's interest in or expectations of the project. Evaluation results may not always be expected or favorable. Regardless of how the findings are perceived, the opportunity for use remains. Also consider how the audience perceives the evaluator and the evaluation process.
  • Presentation of information. Present findings according to the audience's preference. For example, choose between written documentation and oral communication and between presenting anecdotal stories and presenting data.
  • Experience and context. Consider how your audience may interpret the findings, based on their understanding and experiences. Provide context where necessary, and keep the methodology description simple.

Making evaluation reports work for you

The format you use to deliver your evaluation findings will affect how and whether the findings are used. Use these tips to help ensure your evaluation findings are used by your stakeholders.

  • Use action-oriented reporting . Action-oriented reporting prompts your audience to action. This type of report is focused, simple, and geared toward a particular audience.
  • Offer creative options for format of delivery , such as newsletter articles, a website, one-page fact sheets, executive summaries, and PowerPoint presentations or webinars.
  • Communicate your findings in a way that the audience can easily understand . Write content to describe graphs, tables, and charts. Do not assume that your readers will look at both the displays and the narrative. Ensure that all of your graphs, tables, and charts can stand alone.
  • Interpret the findings . Interpretation means looking beyond the data and asking what the results mean in relation to your evaluation questions. It is always a good idea to review the results with selected stakeholders before completing an evaluation report. This review can be accomplished by circulating an interim or draft report and meeting to discuss it together.
  • Include recommendations and lessons learned . The recommendations should address specific findings and be feasible, realistic, actionable, and tailored to intended users. A report that details lessons learned is particularly useful in contributing to public health practices and reporting for accountability purposes.

Keeping it off the bookshelf—the importance of dissemination

Effective dissemination requires a plan to get the right knowledge to the right people at the right time and to help them apply it in ways that may improve a program’s performance.

Step 1: Create a dissemination plan

Your dissemination plan should answer these questions:

  • Who is the target audience?
  • What medium will you use to disseminate findings—hardcopy print, electronic, presentations, briefings?
  • How, where, and when will findings be used?
  • Who is responsible for dissemination?
  • What resources are available to accomplish the work?
  • What are the follow-up activities after release?
  • How will follow-up activities be monitored?

Step 2: Identify a person to oversee the dissemination plan

Identify a person to lead the dissemination effort. This person makes sure that the dissemination plan is carried out. They person should have experience making information accessible and understandable to different audiences.

Step 3: Know the current landscape

Recognize that most reports have a shelf life and most findings have a “relevancy date.” Be knowledgeable about your context, and select optimal release times. For example, if there is a great deal of media coverage about a topic related to your work, such as helping families stay healthy, you may wish to be con­nected to an existing press release or press conference. If your topic has received negative publicity, on the other hand, you may wish to “plan around” this coverage.

Step 4: Consider the timing and frequency

Dissemination works best when multiple products (e.g., a full report, a summary report, an evaluation brief) and channels (i.e., print, verbal, and Web) are used.

Step 5: Stay involved

Convene follow-up discussions and facilitation as needed to ensure continued use of the report. You can take advantage of events that may help keep continued focus on your findings, such as social media, brown-bag lunches, meetings, conferences, or workshops.

Stanford University Public Art Committee announces two major art installations to be unveiled on campus in the next academic year. Sculptor and filmmaker Alia Farid has been chosen to create a temporary work as part of the Stanford Plinth Project, and interactive installation artist and Stanford faculty member Camille Utterback has been commissioned to develop a permanent work for Stanford’s new Data Science and Computation Complex (DSCC). Farid’s work is expected to be installed on Meyer Green’s plinth in the fall of 2024 and will remain on view for three years. Utterback’s work is scheduled to be installed in the winter of 2025. Both works will be viewable by the public.

“Public art is so meaningful for how it brings creative vitality to the Stanford campus in a way that is tangible and open to everyone,” said Deborah Cullinan, vice president for the arts and co-chair of the Public Art Committee with David Lenox, university architect and executive director of campus planning. “It’s thrilling to welcome Alia and her thoughtful work to the university environment and to celebrate Camille as an extraordinary artist already in our midst.”

These publicly accessible projects promise rich engagement opportunities with students and the Stanford community.

Plinth Project: Amulets

“Amulets brings into view an inconspicuous yet significant object of Mesopotamian material culture,” writes Farid about the proposal of two large-scale amulets held up by one another, made of polyester resin, a modern material, and blue faience, the earliest form of ceramic glaze, invented more than 6000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia, in what is today Iraq.

Working with a group of alum curators to collect and review artist nominations, the Public Art Committee selected Farid’s proposal for the Plinth Project based on its formal beauty, the resonance of significantly important themes to Stanford and the Bay Area, such as the social and environmental impact of extractive industries, and its direct engagement with the collections of Stanford’s Cantor Arts Center and Hoover Institution. Her work will replace the inaugural Plinth Project commission  Hello by the Shanghai-based conceptual artist Xu Zhen.

Blue faience is used on tiles, vessels, amulets, beads, and other small objects – examples of which are in the Stanford Family Collections in the Cantor Arts Center – and is often associated with water and used to symbolize this natural element and its faculties: fertility, growth, abundance, and renewal.

In connection with work Farid has been developing on the social and environmental impact of extractive industries in southern Iraq and Kuwait, Amulets also comments obliquely on the environmental degradation and cultural erasure resulting from coalition wars in Iraq. Recent and upcoming solo exhibitions include Chisenhale Gallery, London; Henie Onstad Kunstsenter outside Oslo, Norway; and Contemporary Art Museum Houston in partnership with Rivers Institute and Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan. In 2023, Farid received The Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award, one of the world’s largest art prizes, and she was shortlisted for the most recent Artes Mundi, the U.K.’s leading biennial exhibition and international contemporary art prize. In 2023-2024, she was the David and Roberta Logie Fellow at Harvard Radcliffe Institute.

“Writing my own software and designing my own interfaces, I develop physical-digital systems that engage people’s bodies instead of just their fingers and eyes,” writes Utterback, associate professor in the Department of Art and Art History in the School of Humanities and Sciences and, by courtesy, in the Department of Computer Science in the School of Engineering .

For the DSCC commission, an ad-hoc committee of Stanford faculty and senior staff sought dynamic artwork that employed the kinds of data-based and computational techniques that will be researched and taught in the building. The committee determined that Utterback’s interactive installation, which links computational systems to human movement and gesture, was an ideal fit for the new complex – and are excited to increase faculty representation in Stanford’s ambitious public art commissions.

Utterback’s permanent installation of hand-painted glass panels layered with live, responsive, computer-generated projections will span a four-story stairwell connecting two buildings in the Data Science and Computation Complex. Imagery will reference themes in the human history of encoding and storytelling linked to these processes, such as ancient record keeping, topographical maps, early bar graphs, and dark matter simulation. Responding to the presence and movement of people in the building, the installation raises questions regarding the connections between physical bodies, data, and how humans seek to understand and depict themselves in the world. Representing many cultural and technical histories, the work will provide an evolving platform to share the story of Stanford’s research and community at the intersection of data science, computer science, and symbolic systems.

Utterback has been a faculty member at Stanford since 2013. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Media Arts Grant from the Creative Work Fund (2015) and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2009). She has created site-specific installations for exhibitions and venues, including the American Museum of Natural History, New York, New York; National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, Pennsylvania; Sacramento International Airport, California; San Jose International Airport, California; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, New York.

The gold-silver project "remains accommodating for a modest production profile at present with opportunity for growth," noted a Haywood Securities report.

Dolly Varden Silver Corp. (DV:TSX.V; DOLLF:OTCQX) offers upside in exploration potential on its sizable land package and in its current, likely expandable mineral resource, purported Haywood Securities analyst Marcus Giannini in a May 9 research note. Giannini recently took over covering this mining company.

"While we believe the opportunity for discovery within the greater land package remains a significant catalyst for future value creation, we also view the current endowment of defined gold and silver resources as a starting point for a modest underground and conventional mining and processing scenario," Giannini wrote.

142% Gain, Catalysts

Haywood has a Buy rating and a CA$2.40 per share target price on the Canadian explorer-developer, trading at about CA$0.99 per share at the time of the report, noted Giannini. As such, the implied return for investors is 142%.

"We recommend investors accumulate shares of Dolly at current prices," Giannini wrote. "We believe the primary value driver for Dolly over the short and long term should occur by way of the drill bit as the firm's 2024 program nears commencement."

The start of this summer exploration campaign is an upcoming catalyst for Dolly Varden Silver, as is an update to the mineral resource estimate for its Kitsault Valley project in British Columbia's Golden Triangle.

Giannini presented the highlights of the Dolly Varden Silver story.

One is the company's existing high-grade gold and silver resource for its Kitsault Valley project, comprised of gold-rich Homestake Ridge to the north and various silver-dominant deposits to the south (Dolly Varden, Torbrit, North Star, and Wolf). The current Indicated plus Inferred resource at Kitsault Valley totals 64,000,000 ounces of silver and 982,712 ounces of gold.

"Grade, jurisdiction, and upside to resource growth sets these ounces apart from other peers in the space," Giannini wrote.

Based on the current resource, Haywood outlined a production scenario for Dolly Varden Silver, which has two underground mines feeding ore to a centralized processing plant. Production would be about 84,000 of gold equivalent (Au eq) per annum for about 13.5 years. Estimated costs would be US$150 million (US$150M) as initial capex, US$851 per ounce of Au eq as the all-in sustaining cost, and US$78M as life-of-mine sustaining capital.

"Our assumed production scenario may be conservative," Giannini commented.

Potential for New Discoveries

Given Dolly Varden Silver's 163 square kilometer land package in the prolific Golden Triangle, Giannini asserted, numerous opportunities exist for the Vancouver-based mining company to discover additional mineralization at Kitsault Valley and grow its existing resource.

"Driven by the underlying geology and metallogenic setting, we continue to see promising drill results within the current resources, as well as when stepping out into more untested zones," added the analyst.

Various deposits remain open at depth and along strike. Untested targets exist along the Kitsault Valley Trend that lies between the contiguous Dolly Varden and Homestake Ridge properties. Beyond the known deposits, the greater Kitsault Valley land package offers prospective targets, too.

"Dolly Varden's planned 2024 exploration program could be transformational as high-priority areas remain open for expansion while untested regional targets could lead to additional deposit discoveries," Giannini wrote.

The company has sufficient cash for this planned work.

Attractive Takeout Target

Giannini wrote that Haywood expects additional merger and acquisition activity to occur, particularly in tier-one jurisdictions such as the Golden Triangle, and Dolly Varden Silver's Kitsault Valley could get taken out for various reasons.

The project has high-quality ounces. Its "mineralogy and depositional context" are similar to those seen at another Golden Triangle project, Brucejack, acquired for US$2.8 billion in 2022 by Newcrest Mining. Already, North American producers have expressed an interest in Dolly Varden Silver, such as Hecla Mining, now with about a 15% stake in it.

"Kitsault Valley remains a good fit for established producers," wrote Giannini.

The UK could make more than half a trillion pounds in the next decade by embracing AI and cloud technology, according to a new report commissioned by Microsoft.

AI represents a £550 billion opportunity for the UK over the next 10 years, as revealed in a new report commissioned by Microsoft.

Independent consultancy Public First used comprehensive data-modelling techniques and extensive surveys of more than 1,000 senior business decision makers to create the report, Unlocking the UK’s AI Potential .

The findings predict multiple ways that AI could boost the UK economy, if the country steps up its AI journey. The report also estimates that prompt investment in digital technologies and skills could have an average societal Return on Investment (ROI) of more than 5:1 in the next decade – meaning that for every extra £1 spent by companies, the economy could grow by £5.

With the most advanced tech sector in Europe – second globally only to the US – the UK is well set up for AI leadership. In 2021, the UK Government launched the National AI Strategy , a 10-year action plan to make the UK an ‘AI superpower’. Digital technology is already one of the biggest drivers of UK growth and the country has attracted more than £20 billion in private investment in AI since 2016.

AI economy boost

But the report suggests that delaying AI roll-out over the next half decade could cost the UK £150 billion by 2035.

Hugh Milward, Vice President for Corporate, External and Legal Affairs at Microsoft, says: “The UK risks foregoing significant economic gain if we let progress slip over the next five years.

“Planning, power, and permitting are critical to unlocking the sector’s ability to invest quicker and make the most of the opportunity for the UK.”

To maintain momentum on AI adoption, the UK will need to take action on key bottlenecks.

Bottleneck 1: Infrastructure

The UK’s digital technology infrastructure is less advanced than many other countries. As of 2022, the UK had just 1.3% of global computing capacity. Staying at the forefront of the fast-changing AI market will require substantial resources and capabilities, including adequate datacentre infrastructure and a dependable supply of powerful GPU computer chips.

The report finds that almost a third (31%) of SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) are yet to adopt the cloud and almost half (47%) do not currently use AI tools, applications, AI robotics or machinery. To harness AI’s potential, businesses will need to become more familiar with digital technology.

Bottleneck 3: Skills shortage

Two-fifths of businesses struggle to find staff with good digital skills, according to the research, with shortages in traditional digital roles such as data analytics or IT.

In addition, the need for workers with new AI-specific skills, such as prompt engineering, is likely to rise. It will be essential to offer retraining and upskilling opportunities in AI-related fields over the next decade, the report finds.

How can we ensure these bottlenecks are addressed to harness the full potential of AI?

Securing the UK’s AI future

Microsoft announced a £2.5 billion ($3.2bn) investment in AI skills, security and datacentre infrastructure in 2023, aiming to procure more than 20,000 of the most advanced GPUs [Graphics Processing Units] by 2026. By more than doubling its datacentre infrastructure across the UK, with the biggest investment in its 40-year history in the country, Microsoft will help to support UK momentum in the AI era.

The Government simultaneously invested £1.5bn in computing capacity and committed to building three new supercomputers by 2025.

Setting new standards for the public sector

While the discourse around AI often hinges on private business, economic gains and digital innovation will have genuine, positive effects on real lives, the report says. This will perhaps be most significant in the public sector, which currently faces huge pressures on resources.

Medic using AI

The report reveals that strategic use of AI could save the UK’s public sector £17 billion by 2035 – enough to pay the salaries of more than 330,000 nurses.  What’s more, the projected enhancement benefits of AI on public sector occupations are only around 15% less than for roles in the private sector.

AI is already helping to support earlier cancer and disease detection in the NHS. Not only could this save the NHS an additional £500 million by 2030, but it would transform outcomes for patients and families.

Levelling up the workforce with AI skills

While headlines are sometimes dominated by fears that AI will steal or negatively alter jobs, the report argues that AI is unlikely to create unemployment in the short-to-medium term. Instead, AI could not only help make individual workers more productive, but also offer many people an upskilling or new employment opportunity.

It is likely there will be job opportunities around new AI products and services, as well as in burgeoning AI-related fields, such as data and prompt engineering. Even between 2020 and 2023, demand for AI roles grew by twice as much as the average labour demand.

Contrary to common concerns that AI will have a disproportionately negative impact on lower-income workers, the report suggests that actually AI could help employees at the bottom or middle end of the wage distribution table to catch up with higher earners.

AI skills

To help enhance the workforce, Microsoft UK has made a multi-million-pound investment to train one million people with the skills they need to work with AI.

There are key employment areas where the UK is especially well-suited to using AI, notably in financial services, professional services, health, biotech and science.

Supporting AI advances in such fields could not only lift the UK economy but also benefit society. In one recent example, Microsoft and research laboratory PNNL used a combination of AI and high-powered computing to discover a new type of battery material in just weeks, rather than the predicted years.

Empowering the UK to fulfil its AI potential

The impact of generative AI has been compared to the Industrial Revolution, but at a much faster pace and at much greater scale. The UK must act assertively or risk being left behind, the report concludes.

Microsoft is committed to helping the country realise its ambitions and become an AI superpower, potentially unlocking transformative benefits for the economy, public services and society at large.
