Q 2: Précis

Dealing with children.

The author says that educationists wrongly prefer not to interfere with children whereas they should enjoy their company. If one likes children the way one likes one’s pets, they will be more responsive without complaining much. If one tries to create in them a social sense and has in mind some future expectations of them; they will not feel thankful. One’s interest in children should spring from an instinctive pleasure in the company of children without any ulterior motive.

Unfortunately, over-worked teachers can’t maintain a natural liking for children. Teachers’ contact with children should not exceed two hours a day. Dealing with children, without strict discipline, is tiresome. This causes obvious irritation despite the teachers’ theories. Mere self-control cannot produce the feelings of friendliness which is above rules. The impulse provides guidance. The rules cannot replace love and tact. (Words 137)

Q 3: Comprehension

1. What leads us to believe that this passage is from a science fiction story?

Ans: The situation described in this passage is not real. It is the product of pure imagination. The “thing” in it is not found in the real world. It is a strange creature with unusual and horrible features. All this shows that this passage is from a science fiction story.

2. How was the crowd behaving?

Ans: The crowd was intensely excited and curious to know what was there in the pit. The suspense was unbearable for the people around the pit. They were pushing each other to see into the pit.

3. Why did the mood of the crowd alter?

Ans: In the beginning, the people were excited and curious to see the “creature in the pit.’’ When they had the first glimpse of the “thing,” they were horrified because the thing was extremely repulsive, ugly and frightening. They feared that the thing might attack them. This changed their mood and they ran away from the pit.

4. What was the narrator’s initial reaction to the “Thing”?

Ans: The initial reaction of the narrator was that, seeing the pit and fearing the presence of some horrible creature in it, he was imagining strange things. Driven by curiosity, he pushed through the crowd to reach nearer the pit.

On seeing the ugly face of the “thing”, he too was horrified like the men who were running away from the pit. He, however, stood there alone.

5. Why did the writer feel disgusted?

Ans: The writer felt disgusted when he saw the creature’s face because its features were extremely bizarre, odd, strange, ugly and horrifying.

Q 4: Correction of Sentences

(I) He enjoyed during the holidays. Correct: He enjoyed himself during the holidays.

(ii) None of the boys had learnt their lesson. Correct: None of the boys had learnt his lesson.

(iii) He is abusing the money of his father. Correct: He is misusing the money of his father (or his father’s money).

(iv) I regret at the delay. Correct: I regret the delay.

(v) I could not help but laugh. Correct: I could not help laughing.

(vi) I always have and always shall be your friend. Correct: I always have been and always will be your friend.

(vii) I was out walking when I saw the new moon in the garden. Correct: I was out walking in the garden when I saw the new moon.

(viii) He cried as if he was mad. Correct: He cried as if he were mad.

Q 5: (a) Punctuation

A hungry lion slipped out of the forest into a barnyard one evening when he saw a plump donkey. His mouth began to water but just as he was ready to jump on the donkey, a rooster crowed. He was frightened and so turned away into the forest again. “Hey! Look at that cowardly lion,” the donkey brayed to the rooster, “I am going to chase him.” And the donkey ran after the lion. “Wait!” the rooster shouted, “You don’t know that.” But it was too late. The lion had turned and killed the donkey. “Ah, my poor stupid friend!” the rooster said as he watched the lion eating the donkey, “the lion wasn’t afraid of you but of my crowing.”

(b) Filling in the blanks

(I) What time do we arrive at our destination? (ii) We are flying against some rough weather; please fasten your seat belts. (iii) It is warming up; at noon we shall be able to go swimming. (iv) My parents are not responsible for my actions. (v) This pan is for cooking omelettes. (vi) For poor attendance, this course is being cancelled. (vii) The police took the men in for questioning. (viii) The women you gave the book to is my aunt.

Q 6: Idioms

(I) They can’t comprehend your views; why are you casting pearls before swine. (ii) After your father’s death, you will have to step into his shoes. (iii) I am fed up with all that stuff and nonsense in his letters to me. (iv) Trying to trace him in this wide world is a wild goose chase. (v) I have noticed that he is always ill at ease in my presence. (vi) You can’t sit on the fence forever; sooner or later you will have to commit yourself. (vii) Please wait here. I am coming in a jiffy. (viii) He is preening himself after his success in the elections.

Q 7: Translation

Pakistan is determined to secure peace in Afghanistan because peace in Afghanistan is extremely important for Pakistan. If looked at from historical perspective, Pakistan and Afghanistan are bound up with historical, cultural and linguistic relations. There relations are inalienable. Both countries depend on each other and neither can live without the other. From day one, Pakistan’s stance has been that a political solution to the Afghan problem be found. Even China supports this view. China has said in this context that Afghan problem can only be solved through negotiations involving the Afghan government.

CSS ENGLISH (PRECIS & COMPOSITION) PAST PAPERS 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020  | 2021

SYLLABUS: ENGLISH – PRECIS & COMPOSITION (COMPULSORY) Total Marks: 100 Time Allowed: 3 hours

The examination in this subject will be based upon a paper carrying 100 marks to test the candidate’s abilities to handle Precis Writing, Reading Comprehension, Sentence Structuring, Translation, Grammar and Vocabulary.

I. Precis Writing (20 marks) A careful selected passage with an orientation of generic understanding and enough flexibility for compression shall be given for précising and suggesting an appropriate title. Out of the total 20 marks allocated to this question, 15 shall go to précising the text and 5 to suggesting the title.

II. Reading Comprehension (20 marks) A carefully selected passage that is rich in substance but not very technical or discipline specific shall be given, followed by five questions, each carrying 4 marks.

III. Grammar and Vocabulary (20 marks) Correct usage of Tense, Articles, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Punctuation, Phrasal Verbs, Synonyms and Antonyms etc.

IV. Sentence Correction (10 marks) The sentences shall be given each having a clear structural flaw in terms of grammar or punctuation. The candidates shall be asked to rewrite them with really needed correction only, without making unnecessary alterations. No two or more sentences should have exactly the same problem, and 2-3 sentences shall be based on correction of punctuation marks.

V. Grouping of Words (10 marks) A random list of twenty words of moderate standard (neither very easy nor utterly unfamiliar) shall be given, to be grouped by the candidates in pairs of those having similar or opposite meaning, as may be clearly directed in the question.

VI. Pairs of Words (10 marks) Ten pairs shall be given of seemingly similar words with different meanings, generally confused in communication, for bringing out the difference in meaning of any five of them by first explaining them in parenthesis and then using them in sentences.

VII. Translation (10 marks) Ten short Urdu sentences involving structural composition, significant terms and figurative/idiomatic expressions shall be given, to be accurately translated into English.

(a) deficiency of vitamins causes different human diseases some of which are given in the table below. choose.

Question Breakdown:

In this question, the examiner has simply asked you to put the correct form of vitamins in the already given table and write them down in front of the diseases which these vitamins cause if there is a deficiency of these vitamins in the human body. Simply draw a table in your answer sheet and put them accordingly. Remember, some questions are so simple that no creativity also becomes creativity. Thus, do not try to write too much when the question being asked is very simple.

(B)  People suffering from cardiovascular diseases have a high level of cholesterol in their blood. This often leads to a build-up of fats on the internal arterial walls. Suggest how this might be harmful to the heart.

In this question, the examiner has asked you the consequences of cardiovascular disease. First, describe the cholesterol in your own words briefly. When done, hit the topic straight without going into the detail of the diseases with symptoms and causes etc. Although you do not need to draw any diagram in this question, making a relevant diagram can help you get maximum marks.

Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a fat-like substance belonging to the class of organic compounds named lipid. Inside the body, it is produced by the liver, and its external intake sources include egg, milk, and meat due to its importance in maintaining the structure and function of the human cells-the basic unit of life.

High Level of Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Diseases: However, if the cholesterol level in the body is raised from normal, it can be a severe risk factor for multiple heart diseases that include: 1. Atherosclerosis: The building of plaque in the vessels is called atherosclerosis. The arteries supplying blood from the heart to the body become narrowed and blood flow to the heart muscle is slowed down or blocked.

2. Ischemic Heart Disease: When arteries are narrowed due to atherosclerosis, less blood and oxygen reach the heart muscle. This is also called coronary artery disease and coronary heart disease. This can ultimately lead to a heart attack.

3. Arrhythmia: Arrhythmia or irregular heart rate is another heart anomaly that is caused by the blockage of heart vessels, that is, in return, due to raised cholesterol levels.

4. Heart-Attack: Having too much cholesterol in your blood can cause fatty deposits to build up in your arteries. This can make the arteries narrow and stiff, making it harder for blood to flow, causing heart-attack.

5. Heart Failure: Heart failure means the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly. It usually happens because the heart has become too weak or stiff due to the raised level of cholesterol.

(C) Why the excessive use of chemical fertilizers should be avoided?

In this question, the examiner has simply asked you to write down the reasons why one shouldn’t use chemical fertilizers excessively. First, write down what the chemical fertilizers actually are in your own words. When done, write down all the possible reasons behind avoiding their excessive use. Lastly, you do not need to draw any diagram for this question.

Chemical Fertilizers: Chemical fertilizers are substances containing chemical elements that increase the fertility of the soil and improve the growth and productivity of crops.

The Need for Chemical Fertilizer: Plants require a number of nutrients like sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorus for their growth. However, soil nutrient levels can decrease over time when crop plants are harvested. Hence, these essential nutrients need to be compensated either through the natural process of decomposition, when plants die and decay, and the nutrients extracted from the soil return to the soil or by the easy means of adding fertilizers.

Hazards associated with excessive use of fertilizers: Although chemical fertilizers are no less than a blessing for human beings, their excessive uses are associated with numerous hazards.

• Chemical fertilizers affect microorganisms living in the soil by disturbing its pH more acidic.
• Such kinds of fertilizers are highly soluble in water; thus, they leach away from the soil without benefiting the plants to their maximum.
• Excessive nitrogen used in the chemical fertilizer can emit greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, contributing to environmental pollution.
• Since the fertilizers are chemical based, their inappropriate can cause eutrophication- the phenomenon of accumulation of nutrients building a layer of green algae over water resources that endangers the existence of aquatic life.
• The excessive use of chemical fertilizers depletes the soil of natural essential nutrients. Consequently, the produced foods have less nutritious value.

(D) Why are scientists worried about the increase of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere?

The examiner has simply asked you to explain, in detail, the causes and reasons why the scientists are worried about the increase of co2 in the atmosphere. Start your answer with a description of the reasons briefly. When done, mention the functions that Co2 performs in the atmosphere. Moreover, write down the causes for its increase in the atmosphere followed by the consequences that it can have on our planet. Lastly, draw a diagram showing its cycle of being absorbed and re-release in the atmosphere i.e., the Carbon Cycle.

Carbon dioxide is responsible for the enhancement in the ability of the atmosphere to heat. Moreover, the presence of carbon dioxide in the earth’s tropospheric zone raises the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. Consequently, it can have devastating outcomes for the inhabitants of the planet earth i.e., global warming and climate change. Thus, scientists are worried about the increase of CO2 in the atmosphere. To understand the concept, it is very important to first understand the function of CO2 in the atmosphere as well as the causes that are responsible for its increase.

What is the main function of CO2 in the atmosphere? CO2, being the most important greenhouse gas (GHG), helps in trapping the heat in the atmosphere. One can say that without CO2 our planet would have been inhospitably cold. Without it, Earth’s natural greenhouse effect would be so feeble that it would be impossible to maintain its average surface temperature above freezing as it absorbs and holds the energy and heat it receives from the Sun in order to stop it from escaping back into space and re-release it in all possible directions. Without it, Earth’s ocean would be frozen solid.

What are the causes that are responsible for the increase of CO2? Because of the role of CO2 in climate, feedbacks in the carbon cycle act to maintain global temperatures within certain bounds so that the climate never gets too hot or too cold to support life on Earth when this cycle gets disturbed due to some anthropogenic activities. These activities include:

• Burning of fossil fuels
• Use of other non-renewable energy resources
• Deforestation
• Industrialization

What are the possible consequences that are making it a huge concern for scientists? Extreme Weather Conditions: Rising temperature has drastic impacts as it can cause: a. Melting glaciers b. Working of Optical Fiber: In a fibre-optic system, a machine called a transmitter turns information into the light. Then the transmitter sends the light through optical fibres. If the fibre has a bend in it, the light can bounce off the cladding and turn the corner to follow the bend. At the end of the fibres, a machine called a receiver accepts the light. The receiver turns the light back into sound, pictures, or computer codes.

Importance of Optical Fibers in present-day telecommunication: In present-day telecommunication, fibre optics is used widespread due to a number of reasons. 1. Much lower levels of signal attenuation 2. Fibre optics provides a much higher bandwidth allowing more data to be delivered. 3. They are much lighter than the coaxial cables that might otherwise be used. 4. Fibre optics does not suffer from stray interference pickup that occurs with coaxial cabling.

• Reducing the use of Pesticides: They contribute immensely to the ozone depletion process so there is a dire need to reduce their usage. It can be controlled by adopting natural methods to get rid of pests and weeds.
• By minimising the use of Vehicles: Switching or encouraging the public to switch from private transport to public can play role in reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, which is also a stimulant to ozone depletion.

(D) Each packet of washing powder carries a token and 4 tokens can be exchanged for free packet. How many free packets will I receive if I buy 64 packets?

The number of free packets= no of packet bought/ no of free tokens exchanged 64 packets = 64 tokens Now, 64/4 = 16 Free Packets Similarly, 16/4 = 4 More Free Packets

Also, 4/4 = 1 More Free Packet

Now, by adding all the free packets, we get 16 + 4 + 1 = 21 Free Packets

Hence, 21 free packets will be received if one buy 64 packets.

Question no 2:

Write a precis of the following passage and also suggest a suitable title:

I think modern educational theorists are inclined to attach too much importance to the negative virtue of not interfering with children, and too little to the positive merit of enjoying their company. If you have the sort of liking for children that many people have for horses or dogs, they will be apt to respond to your suggestions, and to accept prohibitions, perhaps with some good-humoured grumbling, but without resentment. It is no use to have the sort of liking that consists in regarding them as a field for valuable social endeavour, or what amounts to the same thing as an outlet for power-impulses. No child will be grateful for an interest in him that spring from the thought that he will have a vote to be secured for your party or a body to be sacrificed to king and country. The desirable sort of interest is that which consists in spontaneous pleasure in the presence of children, without any ulterior purpose. Teachers who have this quality will seldom need to interface with children's freedom, but will be able to do so, when necessary, without causing psychological damage.

Unfortunately, it is utterly impossible for over worked teachers to preserve an instinctive liking  for children; they are bound to come to feel towards them as the proverbial confectioner's apprentice does towards macaroons. I do not think that education ought to be anyone's whole profession: it should be undertaken for at most two hours a day by people whose remaining hours are spend away from children. The society of the young is fatiguing, especially when strict discipline is avoided. Fatigue, in the end, produces irritation, which is likely to express itself somehow, whatever theories the harassed teacher may have taught himself or herself to believe. The necessary friendliness cannot be preserved by self-control alone. But where it exists, it should be unnecessary to have rules in advance as to how "naughty" children are to be treated, since impulse is likely to lead to the right decision, and almost any decision will be right if the child feels that you like him. No rules, however wise, are a substitute for affection and tact.

Title : It's time for educators to revisit an ethic of excellence

The author says that modern educationists wrongly prefer not to interface with children whereas they should enjoy their company. If one likes children they way one likes one's pets, they will be more responsive without complaining much. If one tries to create in them a social sense and has in mind some future expectations of them; they will not feel thankful. One's interest in children should spring from an instinctive pleasure in the company of children without any ulterior motive.

Unfortunately, teachers are over-burdened. They can't maintain a natural liking for children. Teachers contact with children  should not exceed two hours a day. Dealing with children, without strict discipline, is tiresome. This causes obvious irritation despite the teachers'  theories. Mere self-control cannot produce the feelings of friendliness which is above rules. the impulse provides guidance. The giving of love is an education in itself.

(a) a hungry lion slipped out of the forest into a barnyard one evening when he saw a plump donkey his mouth began to water but just as he was ready to jump on the donkey a rooster crowd he was frightened  and so turned away into the forest again hey look at that cowardly lion the donkey brayed to the rooster i am going to chase him and the donkey ran after the lion wait the rooster shouted you dont know that but it was too late the lion had turned and killed the donkey ah my poor stupid friend the rooster said as he watched the lion eating the donkey the lion wasnt afraid of you but of my crowing.
