writing the city

wtc_logo_12102020(white).png

Writing The City was founded in 2011 with the support of the British Council and the National Arts Council Singapore. Today, we are   a literary arts platform in Singapore which supports a community of new, emerging and established prose writers to develop their writing craft.

O ur purpose is to illuminate all the different, beautiful ways that writing can come to be.  We do that through three programmes:

Writer 's Cove:

This is a space for writers in Singapore to share their work, and to give and receive feedback.  Just submit your work and then we review it together.

Write In Session s:

Here, we come together to create. We'll spend the first hour working on our writing. Or, you can share your project so the rest can share their ideas. In the second hour, we'll have a light discussion on  the things we've been working on.

Writing Workshop:

In each workshop, we explore a specific thread of the writing craft, from writing about love, to the intricacies of worldbuilding. We’ve enlisted help from a diversity of local authors, from speculative fictionist Ng Yi-sheng, to Akshita Nanda, Singapore Literature Prize Winner and Straits Times columnist.

Most of the programmes are run by Benedict Lim, a Malaysian artist living in Singapore. In May 2023, we were able to gain support from Sing Lit Station  as they become our Programme Partner.

Benedict Lim

Benedict is a sceptical idealist, forever dancing between two profundities. They were born and raised in Kota Kinabalu, th e capital of Sabah, Malaysia. Based in Singapore since 2013, they are keen to explore storytelling in all its forms.

In 2021, they worked on thenational.api —a commission for the inaugural Southeast Asian Queer Cultural Festival by ASEAN SOGIE Caucus . The same year, their short story, Your Life in Singapore, was published in Call and Response 2: A Singapore Migrant Anthology.

Besides writing, Ben edict is also pursuing the performing arts, appearing in 'The Swimming Pool Library Exhibition' and 'Metazomia, both by Brian Gothong Tan.

Enrich and Enjoy

creative writing singapore rates

By putting young children’s language learning pathways at its heart, Writers Studio focuses on language learning as a continuous process ranging from the use of basic to increasingly complex language. We diagnose your child’s language proficiency and recommend the most suitable language learning pathway to develop literacy healthily.

A Lighthouse for : Beginners

Just like a beacon, we guide weaker learners on their language learning journey at a slower pace. Conditioning is done to rectify language comprehension and behavioural issues. We ensure your child starts language learning in the most conducive learning environment. Your child will improve and gain confidence in English.

Steer towards Excellence : The Intermediate

When we try hard to perform but we can’t. You find yourself missing targets. You feel that your hard work does not pay off. There were hit and misses. Our teachers find out why and guide you on the right path to better results. Some methods must be eradicated, and new techniques need to be in place. Or adjustments that must be made to the way you prepare for the exams.

Reach for the Stars: Advanced Learners

Language Learning Pathway 3 sees our most talented learners heading towards excellence. We turn you into critical thinkers and persuasive writers. Wear your thinking caps as you debate, inquire and convince. You find yourself delving into deeper recesses of the mind as you write prolifically and expand your knowledge.

Achieve Success through Literacy

Learning Pathway 1

To The Lighthouse

This training pace is suitable for children with weaker foundations but has good potential in attaining language goals over a longer time frame.

Learning Pathway 2

Navigate & Improve

Students with mid-abilities overcome roadblocks to success, improving by unlearning and reconditioning. New techniques are learnt. Meticulous attitudes are cultivated. Learn to take ownership of learning.

Learning Pathway 3

To The Pinnacle

Students with high-abilities are exposed to deeper concepts and exposed to complex exercises. Skills are stretched to the limit as they acquire eloquence in speaking, reading and writing.

5 Best English Writing Classes For Kids in Singapore: 2023 Guide

1. The Write Connection

Nurturing English writing skills in children is like laying a strong foundation for their future. It empowers them to express ideas, convey thoughts, and unlock their creativity.

How can writing help with a kid’s development?

According to experts, writing helps improve skills like problem-solving and critical thinking .  This is because when you write, you have to put words in a specific order and arrangement. This means kids have to think and organize information to create sentences and paragraphs.

What are the most popular types of writing for kids to learn in Singapore?

In Singapore, there are two common types of writing for kids: composition and creative writing.

Composition focuses on structured writing, helping kids master the art of crafting clear, organized, and compelling pieces. They provide essential skills for academic success and effective communication.

On the other hand, creative writing ignites imagination and allows kids to explore the boundless realms of storytelling. Through vivid characters, exciting plots, and imaginative settings, children learn to captivate readers with their unique narratives.

Composition emphasizes formal structure, grammar, and logical progression, while creative writing encourages free expression, imaginative flair, and storytelling prowess.

Creative Writing Classes For Kids In Singapore

Creative writing will get your children’s imagination going. It will encourage your little ones to express themselves, create exciting characters, and develop a narrative and plot full of twists, turns, and imagination. As the name suggests, creative writing explores different genres and styles, such as poetry, script, storytelling, prose, and journalism. Whether your little one strives to be the next J. K. Rowling or the much-loved David Walliams, there is something for every genre, including action and adventure, science fiction and fantasy, comedy, and drama.

Creative writing is favorable for many different reasons. Just like painting and composing music, creative writing is an artistic skill. The artistic process encourages imagination and ideas. The creative process improves oral and written skills instilling a sense of artistic expression in young children, which can also help them express their thoughts and feelings.

There are numerous creative writing courses, programs, and workshops throughout Singapore.
