What actions will be taken in the event of a security breach or equipment failure?

We might not be able to prevent risk, but we can manage it. Managing business risk requires identifying and understanding risks while seeking ways to reduce risk in a way that also supports other business goals.

Companies heavily invest every year in ways to mitigate and respond to risk. But how do they make sure everyone is on board? 

There might be a variety of ways to communicate a risk management plan to all the relevant players, but a visual presentation can be effective in not only presenting the risk management plan, but also ensuring that it is engaging and actionable across your organization.

A written risk management plan for business should not only include a listing of possible risks, but it also should feature plans to manage risk and respond to incidents.

Boeing at risk of prosecution for breaking deal over crashes

Alaska Airlines N704AL, a Boeing 737 Max 9 that had a door plug blow out from its fuselage midair, at a maintenance hanger at Portland International Airport in Portland, Ore. Problems have plagued the manufacturer even after two fatal crashes, and many current and former employees blame the company's focus on making planes more quickly.

Boeing faces possible criminal prosecution after the US Justice Department found the company violated a deferred-prosecution agreement tied to two fatal crashes half a decade ago, intensifying the crisis engulfing the embattled US plane maker.

The company breached the $2.5 billion settlement “by failing to design, implement, and enforce a compliance and ethics program to prevent and detect violations of the US fraud laws throughout its operations,” according to the filing late on Tuesday.

Boeing now has four weeks to respond with its analysis and comments, which will be taken into consideration with regard to any next steps. The Justice Department said it’s still determining how to proceed, including whether and how to punish the company.

The decision escalates the legal risks facing the plane maker in the wake of a near-catastrophe in early January, when a fuselage panel blew off an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 mid-flight after workers failed to install critical bolts. The accident took place two days before the expiration of the deferred-prosecution agreement, in which Boeing agreed to comply with the settlement and cooperate with the government for a period of three years, after which the charge would be dismissed.

“We believe that we have honored the terms of that agreement, and look forward to the opportunity to respond to the Department on this issue,” Boeing said in a statement after the Justice Department filing.

Under the terms of the accord, the company adopted a compliance program designed to prevent it from deceiving regulators, including the Federal Aviation Administration. The deferred-prosecution agreement, reached in the waning days of the Trump administration, appeared to give Boeing the equivalent of a “get out of jail free” card despite the two crashes that took the lives of 346 people.

Boeing also faces another ultimatum, that one from the FAA, to devise a plan to fix what the regulator called “systemic” quality-control issues. Those 90 days, issued in late February, are set to run out at the end of this month.

US prosecutors in Seattle have already sent subpoenas seeking documents and communications from Boeing and supplier Spirit AeroSystems, which made the door plug that blew out. The US Securities and Exchange Commission is also scrutinizing Boeing’s comments about its safety practices after the Alaska Air accident.

The 2021 agreement not to prosecute Boeing over the two 737 Max jetliner crashes sparked intense criticism, including from victims’ families. Members of the victims families were outraged that prosecutors had not reached out to them before cutting the deal with Boeing, which agreed to pay a criminal fine of $243 million, but was allowed to dodge a fraud charge for withholding important information about the 737 Max from the FAA.

In 2022, the families were able to convince the presiding judge in the case that the Justice Department had improperly excluded them, in violation of the Crime Victims’ Rights Act. Even so, the judge declined to alter the terms of the Boeing agreement.

Scrutiny of Boeing has ramped up in the months since the Alaska Airlines accident, the February FAA report, and amid a wave of new whistle-blower allegations pertaining to the plane maker’s manufacturing processes. Congressional panels, including the Senate Commerce Committee, have already held hearings on some of these issues with plans to have both the FAA and Boeing executives testify in the near future.

Lawyers for families of crash victims hailed the Justice Department’s findings.

“This is a positive first step, and for the families, a long time coming,” said Paul Cassell, a lawyer representing the crash victims’ families. “But we need to see further action from DOJ to hold Boeing accountable, and plan to use our meeting on May 31 to explain in more details what we believe would be a satisfactory remedy to Boeing’s ongoing criminal conduct.”

Erin Applebaum, a partner at Kreindler & Kreindler who also represents families, said her clients “hope that DOJ will continue to pursue justice for Boeing’s victims and move forward with a prosecution against Boeing for its egregious criminal acts that resulted in the deaths of 346 innocent people.”

The Justice Department said it plans to confer with the families and their lawyers on May 31 and inform the court of its decision for any punishment against Boeing no later than July 7.

Boeing took steps to improve safety following the two 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, including creating a chief aerospace safety officer and changing the management structure so its engineers reported to chief engineer Howard McKenzie rather than business leaders. But the measures didn’t go nearly far enough, according to scathing report issued by the Federal Aviation Administration in February.

The yearlong study found that many Boeing employees didn’t know how to flag potential safety issues and didn’t trust the “Speak Up” program the company put in place to flag wrongdoing. The plane maker was also faulted for ineffective procedures and training.

A study of 24,109 men from around the world found that low testosterone was linked to a higher risk of dying early, according to a report published May 13 in the Annals of Internal Medicine .

Researchers from the University of Western Australia worked with a global team of scientists to compare baseline testosterone levels with health outcomes using data from previous studies on older men, ranging in age from late 40s to mid-70s on average.

They found a higher risk of dying early, from any cause, among men with a low baseline testosterone level — defined as below 213 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL). A urologist previously told Business Insider that healthy testosterone levels could range from 260 to 900 ng/dL, depending on age.

The analysis also found that men with very low testosterone levels (below 153 ng/dL) had a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

The findings are observational, which means the researchers found a pattern but didn't directly show that low testosterone caused a higher mortality rate.

Still, an independent researcher wrote in an editorial published alongside the study that it helped to shed light on mixed research around longevity and the hormone, particularly when it came to boosting low testosterone with hormone therapy.

Testosterone is a big deal in the longevity and biohacking field

The new study focused on endogenous testosterone, the kind naturally occurring in the body, not hormone therapy. But understanding how testosterone may help or hurt longevity could make big waves in the booming hormone-therapy market of products and services advertised to help men reclaim their youth with pills, patches, injections, or gels.

Many of the entrepreneurs touting testosterone as an antiaging panacea are also involved in biohacking , using science to try to optimize health and extend lifespan.

But it's not clear yet whether supplementing testosterone will boost longevity , and there's some evidence to the contrary. The US Food and Drug Administration previously issued a warning that testosterone-boosting treatments may raise the risk of heart attack or stroke, although subsequent research has since found no significant increase in heart problems.

Signs of low testosterone and what to do about it

Testosterone levels tend to drop with age and can also dip in response to health conditions and medications.

Low testosterone can cause symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and disruptions in mood and libido.

Lifestyle factors such as eating a nutritious diet, getting enough exercise, and managing stress are linked to healthy testosterone levels and can also play a role in preventing heart disease and other chronic conditions.

Treatments such as hormone-replacement therapy via pill, injection, gel, or patch can help raise testosterone to normal levels. But doctors previously told BI that medical supervision was key to avoiding any unexpected side effects of changing hormone levels.

One Tech Tip: Protecting your car from the growing risk of keyless vehicle thefts

LONDON (AP) — They appear like ghosts in the night, standing outside your house, one holding up an antenna while the other crouches next to the car parked on the driveway. Within seconds, your car is gone, yet another victim amid a surge in auto theft enabled by the technology designed to make it easier to unlock and start vehicles.

Auto technology has evolved and many newer cars use wireless key fobs and push-button starters instead of traditional metal keys. The fob sends a short-range signal, so when the driver approaches the car, it automatically unlocks the door. This saves you the hassle of digging out your keys when you’ve got your hands full with groceries.

But that technology also makes things easier for thieves. The wireless fob will continue to emit a signal even if you’re not using it. Thieves prowl neighborhoods at night looking for cars parked outside so they can carry out so-called relay attacks. Using portable equipment that can pick up the faint signal from a fob inside the house or parking lot, they relay it back to a transmitter that can clone the signal.

Officials have urged carmakers to reduce the security vulnerabilities and warn owners about the risks.

So what can you do to reduce the odds that your car will be gone in 60 seconds? “It’s relatively easy for drivers to protect themselves,” said Steve Launchbury, principal engineer of automotive security at Thatcham Research, a U.K.-based automotive risk intelligence company. Here are some tips:

USE A SIGNAL BLOCKER

A simple but effective way to stop auto bandits from purloining your key fob signal is to use a Faraday bag or pouch. They’re lined with a conductive metal mesh that blocks the transmission of electromagnetic signals.

The pouches aren’t expensive, and you can also get boxes that do the same thing. But experts advise testing to make sure they work. Just put the key fob inside and approach your car. If the doors don’t automatically unlock, then the signal is being blocked.

It’s also important to remember to use it whenever you leave your vehicle, and don’t forget to put all of your key fobs inside, including any spares.

But ignore some advice making the rounds on the internet telling you to put your fob in the microwave or freezer. It doesn’t have the same effect as a Faraday bag, and you risk damaging your key.

GET AN OLD-FASHIONED LOCK

Try an old-school solution by using a physical lock. Some police forces advise car owners to use them to make your vehicle look less tempting to steal. The reasoning is that a would-be thief might be deterred by the effort needed to cut through the lock and instead turn their attention to an easier target.

Locks, in the shape of a disk or a long bar, clamp onto the steering wheel and make it difficult to steer. There are also versions that prevent the car from being put in gear. The downside is you’ll need extra time to attach or remove it whenever you aren’t driving.

CHANGE UP YOUR SETTINGS

For many cars, it’s possible to deactivate the wireless setting so that you can’t open the door remotely. For Fords, Hondas and Audis, use the touchscreen menus. If you own a Toyota , you can temporarily disable the signal by holding down the fob’s lock button and at the same time pressing the unlock button twice. If you’ve done it correctly, the fob’s indicator light should blink four times. Be aware that the next time you press any button, remote unlocking will be reactivated.

The method will vary depending on make and model so consult your owner’s manual for the exact process. If it sounds complicated, there are YouTube videos that walk you through it. Don’t forget that in most cases you’ll now have to manually press the fob’s unlock button.

Automakers have started adding motion sensors to key fobs. If the sensor doesn’t detect recent movement because it’s been, say, left on the kitchen counter after you come home, the fob goes into sleep mode and stops transmitting. If it lacks this capability, check with your dealer whether it’s possible to upgrade it.

If you buy a used car, some experts also advise getting the keys reprogrammed, just in case the previous owner kept one of the fobs.

WATCH OUT FOR NEW METHODS

Researchers have uncovered a new auto theft technique that doesn’t target radio signals. The controller area network, or CAN, is “a feature of modern cars which allows different components and systems to communicate, (and) has recently been targeted and exploited by thieves,” said Thatcham’s Launchbury.

The network allows sensors and control modules to talk to each other directly, instead of going through a central node. Thieves take advantage by accessing the network from the car’s exterior, usually by removing a headlight and connecting a device that can “inject” a signal, tricking the car into unlocking and starting.

While automakers work on improving CAN security, “there are steps drivers can take today to add layers of security and deter criminals,” such as using a physical lock, Launchbury said.

Aftermarket electronic immobilizer systems “should render a criminal’s theft tool useless,” and might even get you a discount on auto insurance , he said. Thatcham and other companies offer them but the downside is they can be quite pricey.
