Digital Scholarship staff have supported a variety of types of digital assignments that range both in digital method and skill level.

Podcasting — Students are assigned to create a short podcast episode (usually around 5 minutes in length), usually taking the place of a more standard essay assignment. DS staff led workshops to introduce audio editing software and discuss storyboarding and other project management strategies. Under normal circumstances, students were also able to check out DSC microphones and use DSC space for recording.

Video Editing —  Like podcasting, video assignments often substitute for an essay assignment or final project. In one support course, students worked in groups of four to research, author, peer review, and then record 3–5 minute videos composed of 5–6 slides that explained the significance of one object from the Pharaonic Period (3000–3332 BCE) for understanding gender in ancient Egypt. Videos included rich imagery of the object (and other images necessary to understand the object) with explanatory voiceover. These videos were similar to the idea behind the British Museum’s "History of the world in 100 objects" podcast .

Mapping — A number of instructors have assigned students to create an interactive, media-rich essay using the web-based tool StoryMaps. A more advanced course on the history of unfree migration required students to create multiple maps using the open source mapping software QGIS and the web-based ArcGIS Online. DS staff delivered workshops and developed custom tutorials for these courses.

Digital Exhibit Building —  Student-created digital exhibits are best supported as group assignments scaffolded throughout the quarter and integrating source selection, digital skills, and topic exploration. These often take the place of a mid-semester project or a final project.  Timeline exhibits have focused student attention on how temporality affects their subject.  Thinglink allows users to annotate images using text, other images, and online videos to call attention to specific aspects of that image and allow for close examination. For a more robust object-based virtual exhibit, we have hosted a quarter-long instance of Omeka , which allows the creation of object based virtual exhibits.

How to Do Assignments at VU

Manage your study time well by using a planner or diary to pace your activities appropriately. Start your course assignments early. Do not wait until the last moment. You will need time to gather relevant information, discuss and interact with your course mates and look for additional resources to complete the assignments.

Read through the assignment carefully and find out exactly what is required. Underline key words such as discuss, compare, consider, how would… Those words will tell you what to do for your assignment.

In particular, pay special attention to any format requirements mentioned in the assignment. Many times, the solution is required as a spreadsheet or a word-processed document and tutors may refuse to award marks if the formatting requirements are not followed.

The first thing before doing the assignment is to understand the assignment completely. If anything in the assignment is unclear, you may ask your peers and tutors.

Brainstorm and jot down your original ideas on paper or in your computer.

Look back at the question again to check that you are answering it correctly.

Be to the point. For example, in a descriptive question, there is no need for long introductions or a verbose answer. Don’t just write about the subject, relate your answers to the given points in the assignments and give your own insight/thoughts on it. Make simple sentences, this will reduce language and grammar mistakes.

Make sure that you address all requirements of the assignment. Overlooking small points can lead to loss of marks. Remember, while answering any assignment, you have to show your own understanding about the subject matter.

Think and answer logically. Organize your ideas. Your assignments should be clear, well sequenced and very well constructed.

To prepare your assignment you are encouraged to consult books, journals and the Internet but remember to provide proper references and citations so that you are not penalized.

It influences the grader how well things are organized at first view. Thus make paragraphs and use headings. This will also help you to check that you have answered all the questions.

Do not copy word for word from any source. You should use your own words as far as possible.

If you use an idea from a book or from the internet, written in your own words you should provide the name of the author and the year. At the end of your assignment you must give full details.

If you use the words out of a book, you need to give the author, year and page. The citation and referencing should be done properly so that you are not penalized.

Working with others and sharing ideas is always a valuable activity and is recommended for assignments. However, all material you submit MUST be your own unique and original work.

Copying from others or allowing them to copy from you are both classified as cheating and will be awarded zero marks. The University may award further penalties in certain cases.

Deadlines for submission must be strictly adhered to. Late assignments are not accepted since the University already makes an allowance for infrastructure problems such as power loss etc.

Assignments are typically designed to be completed outside of class time and may require independent research, critical thinking, and analysis. They are often graded and used as a significant component of a student’s overall course grade. The instructions for an assignment usually specify the goals, requirements, and deadlines for completion, and students are expected to meet these criteria to earn a good grade.

Applications of Assignment

Assignments have many applications across different fields and industries. Here are a few examples:

  • Non-profit organizations: Assignments can be used in non-profit organizations to develop fundraising strategies, to plan events, and to conduct research. Volunteers may be assigned to work on a specific project or to help with a particular task.

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of an assignment varies depending on the context in which it is given. However, some common purposes of assignments include:

  • Assessing learning: Assignments are often used to assess a student’s understanding of a particular topic or concept. This allows educators to determine if a student has mastered the material or if they need additional support.
  • Developing skills: Assignments can be used to develop a wide range of skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, research, and communication. Assignments that require students to analyze and synthesize information can help to build these skills.
  • Encouraging creativity: Assignments can be designed to encourage students to be creative and think outside the box. This can help to foster innovation and original thinking.
  • Providing feedback : Assignments provide an opportunity for teachers to provide feedback to students on their progress and performance. Feedback can help students to understand where they need to improve and to develop a growth mindset.
  • Meeting learning objectives : Assignments can be designed to help students meet specific learning objectives or outcomes. For example, a writing assignment may be designed to help students improve their writing skills, while a research assignment may be designed to help students develop their research skills.

When to write Assignment

Assignments are typically given by instructors or professors as part of a course or academic program. The timing of when to write an assignment will depend on the specific requirements of the course or program, but in general, assignments should be completed within the timeframe specified by the instructor or program guidelines.

It is important to begin working on assignments as soon as possible to ensure enough time for research, writing, and revisions. Waiting until the last minute can result in rushed work and lower quality output.

It is also important to prioritize assignments based on their due dates and the amount of work required. This will help to manage time effectively and ensure that all assignments are completed on time.

In addition to assignments given by instructors or professors, there may be other situations where writing an assignment is necessary. For example, in the workplace, assignments may be given to complete a specific project or task. In these situations, it is important to establish clear deadlines and expectations to ensure that the assignment is completed on time and to a high standard.

Characteristics of Assignment

Here are some common characteristics of assignments:

  • Purpose : Assignments have a specific purpose, such as assessing knowledge or developing skills. They are designed to help students learn and achieve specific learning objectives.
  • Requirements: Assignments have specific requirements that must be met, such as a word count, format, or specific content. These requirements are usually provided by the instructor or professor.
  • Deadline: Assignments have a specific deadline for completion, which is usually set by the instructor or professor. It is important to meet the deadline to avoid penalties or lower grades.
  • Individual or group work: Assignments can be completed individually or as part of a group. Group assignments may require collaboration and communication with other group members.
  • Feedback : Assignments provide an opportunity for feedback from the instructor or professor. This feedback can help students to identify areas of improvement and to develop their skills.
  • Academic integrity: Assignments require academic integrity, which means that students must submit original work and avoid plagiarism. This includes citing sources properly and following ethical guidelines.
  • Learning outcomes : Assignments are designed to help students achieve specific learning outcomes. These outcomes are usually related to the course objectives and may include developing critical thinking skills, writing abilities, or subject-specific knowledge.

Advantages of Assignment

There are several advantages of assignment, including:

  • Helps in learning: Assignments help students to reinforce their learning and understanding of a particular topic. By completing assignments, students get to apply the concepts learned in class, which helps them to better understand and retain the information.
  • Develops critical thinking skills: Assignments often require students to think critically and analyze information in order to come up with a solution or answer. This helps to develop their critical thinking skills, which are important for success in many areas of life.
  • Encourages creativity: Assignments that require students to create something, such as a piece of writing or a project, can encourage creativity and innovation. This can help students to develop new ideas and perspectives, which can be beneficial in many areas of life.
  • Builds time-management skills: Assignments often come with deadlines, which can help students to develop time-management skills. Learning how to manage time effectively is an important skill that can help students to succeed in many areas of life.
  • Provides feedback: Assignments provide an opportunity for students to receive feedback on their work. This feedback can help students to identify areas where they need to improve and can help them to grow and develop.

Limitations of Assignment

There are also some limitations of assignments that should be considered, including:

  • Limited scope: Assignments are often limited in scope, and may not provide a comprehensive understanding of a particular topic. They may only cover a specific aspect of a topic, and may not provide a full picture of the subject matter.
  • Lack of engagement: Some assignments may not engage students in the learning process, particularly if they are repetitive or not challenging enough. This can lead to a lack of motivation and interest in the subject matter.
  • Time-consuming: Assignments can be time-consuming, particularly if they require a lot of research or writing. This can be a disadvantage for students who have other commitments, such as work or extracurricular activities.
  • Unreliable assessment: The assessment of assignments can be subjective and may not always accurately reflect a student’s understanding or abilities. The grading may be influenced by factors such as the instructor’s personal biases or the student’s writing style.
  • Lack of feedback : Although assignments can provide feedback, this feedback may not always be detailed or useful. Instructors may not have the time or resources to provide detailed feedback on every assignment, which can limit the value of the feedback that students receive.

The quantity pH , or "power of hydrogen," is a numerical representation of the acidity or basicity of a solution. It can be used to calculate the concentration of hydrogen ions [H + ] or hydronium ions [H 3 O + ] in an aqueous solution. Solutions with low pH are the most acidic, and solutions with high pH are most basic.

Definitions

Although pH is formally defined in terms of activities , it is often estimated using free proton or hydronium concentration:

\[ pH \approx -\log[H_3O^+] \label{eq1}\]

\[ pH \approx -\log[H^+] \label{eq2}\]

\(K_a\), the acid ionization constant , is the equilibrium constant for chemical reactions involving weak acids in aqueous solution. The numerical value of \(K_a\) is used to predict the extent of acid dissociation. A large \(K_a\) value indicates a stronger acid (more of the acid dissociates) and small \(K_a\) value indicates a weaker acid (less of the acid dissociates).

For a chemical equation of the form

\[ HA + H_2O \leftrightharpoons H_3O^+ + A^- \]

\(K_a\) is express as

\[ K_a = \dfrac{[H_3O^+][A^-]}{[HA]} \label{eq3} \]

  • \(HA\) is the undissociated acid and
  • \(A^-\) is the conjugate base of the acid.

Since \(H_2O\) is a pure liquid, it has an activity equal to one and is ignored in the equilibrium constant expression in (Equation \ref{eq3}) like in other equilibrium constants.

Howto: Solving for \(K_a\)

When given the pH value of a solution, solving for \(K_a\) requires the following steps:

  • Set up an ICE table for the chemical reaction.
  • Solve for the concentration of \(\ce{H3O^{+}}\) using the equation for pH: \[ [H_3O^+] = 10^{-pH} \]
  • Use the concentration of \(\ce{H3O^{+}}\) to solve for the concentrations of the other products and reactants.
  • Plug all concentrations into the equation for \(K_a\) and solve.

Example \(\PageIndex{1}\)

Calculate the \(K_a\) value of a 0.2 M aqueous solution of propionic acid (\(\ce{CH3CH2CO2H}\)) with a pH of 4.88.

\[ \ce{CH_3CH_2CO_2H + H_2O \leftrightharpoons H_3O^+ + CH_3CH_2CO_2^- } \nonumber\]

According to the definition of pH (Equation \ref{eq1})

\[\begin{align*} -pH = \log[H_3O^+] &= -4.88 \\[4pt] [H_3O^+] &= 10^{-4.88} \\[4pt] &= 1.32 \times 10^{-5} \\[4pt] &= x \end{align*}\]

According to the definition of \(K_a\) (Equation \ref{eq3}

\[\begin{align*} K_a &= \dfrac{[H_3O^+][CH_3CH_2CO_2^-]}{[CH_3CH_2CO_2H]} \\[4pt] &= \dfrac{x^2}{0.2 - x} \\[4pt] &= \dfrac{(1.32 \times 10^{-5})^2}{0.2 - 1.32 \times 10^{-5}} \\[4pt] &= 8.69 \times 10^{-10} \end{align*}\]

IGNOU Assignment Front Page – The Complete Guide

The front page of an IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) assignment is your first opportunity to make a lasting impression on your evaluator. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about conveying essential information in a clear and standardized format. In this guide, we’ll break down the elements of the IGNOU assignment front page to help you create a polished and professional introduction to your work.

Related Article:

Why Does the Front Page Matter?

The front page of your IGNOU assignment serves several crucial functions:

  • Identification: It helps in identifying your assignment uniquely among many others.
  • Information: It conveys essential details about you, your program, and the assignment.
  • First Impression: It creates a professional and organized first impression on the evaluator.

In the world of academia, first impressions matter. When your evaluator receives a stack of assignments, a well-structured front page can make your work stand out. It demonstrates your attention to detail, adherence to guidelines, and a commitment to presenting your work professionally.

What to Include in IGNOU Assignment Front page

The IGNOU assignment front page must include the following mandatory elements:

Each of these elements serves a specific purpose:

  • Enrollment Number: It’s your unique identifier in the IGNOU system, ensuring that your work is matched to your student record.
  • Your Full Name: Adding your name can make your assignment more personal.
  • Contact Information: Your email or contact number for communication.
  • Email id: Please mention your working email id so that if required, the university can contact you through it.
  • Address: Mention you physical address of communication.
  • Assignment Code: The code assigned to the specific assignment you’re submitting. Need to mention the unique number mentioned on assignment question paper. If you don’t understand what is this. Read our article: What is IGNOU Assignment Number.

Why adding your Your Full Name in assignment front page is important?

It is very much important to add your full name on the front page, it can be a valuable addition in certain situations. Here are some scenarios where including your name is beneficial:

  • Multiple Submissions: If you’re submitting multiple assignments together or separately, adding your name helps distinguish your work.
  • Name Discrepancy: If there’s a discrepancy between your enrollment records and the name you want to be associated with your assignment, adding your name avoids confusion.
  • Personalization: Including your name can personalize your assignment, making it clear that you are the author.

When adding your full name, consider placing it in a designated space on the front page. Ensure that it doesn’t clutter the page or disrupt the overall balance of information.

Including Your Contact Information

Adding your contact information to the front page of your IGNOU assignment can be helpful in certain situations:

  • Clarification: If your evaluator has questions or needs clarification on your assignment, having your email or contact number readily available can facilitate communication.
  • Updates: In case there are updates or changes to the assignment submission process, having your contact information ensures that you can be reached quickly.
  • Personalization: Including your contact information can make your assignment feel more personal and approachable.

However, it’s essential to exercise caution when sharing contact information. Be sure that the contact information you provide is accurate and regularly monitored. Additionally, if you prefer not to share your personal contact details, you can create a dedicated email address for academic correspondence.

How to Format the Front Page of IGNOU Assignment

Follow these formatting guidelines to ensure your IGNOU assignment front page meets the required standards:

  • Font and Size: Use a standard and legible font (e.g., Times New Roman) with a font size of 12. Consistency in font and size throughout your assignment maintains a professional appearance.
  • Alignment: Center-align the text both horizontally and vertically. This centralizes all the information and creates a visually balanced front page.
  • Spacing: Maintain uniform spacing throughout the page. Adequate spacing makes the content more readable and organized.
  • Borders and Decoration: Avoid unnecessary borders or decorations; keep it simple and professional. Extraneous design elements can distract from the essential information.

This example adheres to the formatting guidelines, ensuring clarity and readability. The use of a clear title and central alignment enhances the overall appearance of the front page.

Why Clarity and Professionalism Matter

In academic settings, clarity and professionalism are highly valued. A well-structured and neatly formatted front page is an indication that you take your academic work seriously. When evaluators see a front page that follows guidelines and presents information clearly, they are more likely to approach your assignment with a positive attitude.

Moreover, adherence to formatting standards eliminates any confusion about where to find essential information. This is especially important in large institutions like IGNOU, where numerous assignments are evaluated regularly. A standardized format ensures that no crucial details are missed, and your work can be processed efficiently.

Keep the IGNOU Assignment Cover page Simple

The design of your IGNOU assignment front page should prioritize simplicity and minimalism. Here’s why this approach is effective:

  • Clarity: A clean and uncluttered design ensures that essential information is easy to find and understand.
  • Professionalism: Minimalistic designs project professionalism and seriousness about your academic work.
  • Ease of Reading: Extraneous design elements, such as excessive colors or graphics, can distract from the content. A minimalist approach keeps the focus on the information itself

Conclusion – Making Your IGNOU Assignment Front Page Shine

In conclusion, the front page of your IGNOU assignment is more than just a formal requirement; it’s a reflection of your commitment to professionalism and adherence to IGNOU’s guidelines. By including the mandatory elements, formatting it correctly, and optionally adding relevant information, you can create a front page that not only meets IGNOU’s standards but also leaves a positive impression on your evaluator.

A well-crafted front page sets the tone for the rest of your assignment. It shows that you value precision, organization, and clarity—qualities that are highly regarded in academic circles. Whether you choose to include optional elements like your full name or contact information, remember that the primary goal is to present your work clearly and professionally.

As you progress in your academic journey with IGNOU, continue to apply these principles not only to your front page but to the entire assignment. Consistency in formatting, clarity in writing, and a commitment to excellence will serve you well throughout your studies.

With this comprehensive guide, you now have the knowledge and tools to create an IGNOU assignment front page that not only meets the requirements but also makes a statement about your dedication to academic excellence. Take pride in your work, pay attention to the details, and let your front page shine as the introduction to your scholarly endeavors.

The Authors

The workbooks were written by Jackie Pierce and Adrienne Webb, both of whom are highly experienced LCA Maths teachers at St Michael’s Holy Faith school in Finglas, Dublin. Jackie is also an LCA Coordinator.

A word from the authors about LCA Maths and the workbooks

Everyone can do maths and everyone can enjoy maths. The LCA syllabus is designed to be hands-on, student centred, practical maths. Students learn by doing, making mistakes (that’s ok) but above all by engaging in their own learning. LCA Maths is really maths for living and more. It developes numeracy skills needed for everyday life. The ‘Project Maths’  aims to make maths more relevent to life and focuses on understanding rather than learning off by heart…….looks like LCA Maths when initiated many years ago was ahead of it’s time!

The workbooks –  the contents page of each workbook can be used to tick off work done,  so progress can be seen. Each worksheet is a stand alone piece so work is divided into bite-size achievable units. The student is guided through the processes required by a ‘step by step’ or ‘working frames’ approach. On conclusion of each worksheet the student is asked – “what have you done?” On answering this, the student gains a sense of achievement, progress and ownership.

The use of IT has been integrated into the workbooks where computers are used as a learning/research tool. Cross-curricular links are made with other subjects – Science, Catering, VPG, Leisure, etc. These links blend into certain topics of the maths syllabus naturally. There is a final reflection at the end of each module. Here the student assesses their own learning. There is a facility to establish a ‘Word Wall’ or a ‘Bank’ of new maths words, aiming to improve maths literacy.

The design is student friendly and visually appealing. It is in tune with the students’ interests. The workbooks are totally reflective of the syllabus. They will prepare students for adult and working life. The final exam preparation has not been forgotten and is integrated into the content of the workbooks but it was not the main driving force.

When using these workbooks it is hoped that:

  • Teaching and learning is made interactive, enjoyable and natural
  • The students become engaged with their own learning
  • Assessment for learning is taking place in the maths class
  • Independent thinking of the student is encouraged
  • A desire to research and learn more is developed.

Step by Step Instructions to Prepare IGNOU Assignment

Candidates are requested to read each point carefully to prevent from making mistakes while writing the assignment of IGNOU. We have created the instructions point wise so that you can read and understand them easily.

Point-1: Use only foolscap size paper or A4 size paper to write your assignments. Do not use thin paper.

Point-2: Leave at least one or a few lines after completing your one answer so that the evaluator writes a useful comment on blank areas.

Point-3: We recommend using ruled paper instead of blank paper to write your assignment because it is also advised by the IGNOU Officials .

Point-4: Candidates can use a Black or Blue pen to write their assignments for any TEE session.

Point-5: Candidates are not allowed to use the Red pen or other colour pen.

Point-6: Better handwriting also benefits for best marking in your assignment work.

Point-7: Candidates have to write their assignments with their hand which means only handwritten assignments are accepted by IGNOU.

Point-8: Do not print or type your assignments with the help of a computer which is not allowed.

Point-9: They cannot copy their answer from any units/blocks given by the university. If you copied any answer then you will get zero marks for that copied question.

Point-10: Candidates have to write an assignment solution with their own help, if you copied any assignments from other students then your assignment will be rejected by the centre.

Point-11: Prepare or write each course assignment separately. Do not write all assignments in one set.

Point-12: Write each question before writing an answer so you don’t need to attach a question paper while submitting the assignment.

Point-13: After finishing the work of assignment writing, use a paper file and arrange all your assignments in a proper manner. ( Note: Plastic files will not be accepted by the university in any circumstances).

Point-14: Candidate must be sent their complete assignments to the coordinator of the allotted study centre. You cannot send it to any other IGNOU centre like Regional Centre, Evaluation Division, and Registration for evaluation.

Also Read: How To Submit IGNOU Assignment Online?

Point-15: It is noted that the candidates have to submit their assignment personally so you can’t send it through email, post or courier.

  • IGNOU Regional Centre List
  • IGNOU Study Centre List

Point-16: Don’t forget to receive the receipt for the submission of the assignment.

Point-17: After submitting your assignments to the coordinator, they send an acknowledgement to the study centre.

Point-18: If you have applied to change your study centre then you have to send your assignments to the original centre until you did not get any confirmation from the University of the study centre change. If you got a notice from the university for a successful change of centre then you can submit it to the new centre.

That’s It.

We hope that the above points will be helpful for those students who are confused or have no idea that what to write on the 1st page and what instructions needed to follow to successfully submit the assignments to IGNOU. We are sure that you got your solution from here after reading this article.

Chem – College: Ka, Kb Ice Tables

How do you use Ka or Kb in ICE or RICE tables?

ICE tables for Ka and Kb work the same as they do for any other equilibrium. They can , howeve r, be confusing when you have more than one ionization with a polyprotonic acid. I will show one example a of a base with a single ionization and then one example of an acid with multiple ionizations. Use assumption where you can .

VIDEO Solving Ka, Kb ICE Tables Demonstrated Example 1 : If the initial concentration of the base NH 3 was 0.7M, and the Kb is 4.3 * 10 -5 . What would be the concentration of OH – be at equilibrium?

First step form the chemical equation.

NH 3 (aq) <—> NH 4 + (aq) + OH – (aq)

Then set up the ICE table and fill in the information from the problem.

Next make an X value representing the change in concentration when it shifts to the equilibrium.

Then add the initial and change together to get the equilibrium concentration.

Now construct the equilibrium equation from the equilibrium values you have.

We can make an assumption to get rid of the -x in [ 0.7M – x ]. So it becomes [ 0.7 ]. I have also removed the units to make visualization easier.

Multiply the top left together

Multiply both sides by 0.7

Cross out the 0.7 on the left side.

Multiply the right side.

Take the square (2) root of both sides.

COMPLETE ANSWER: [ OH – ] = 5.49 * 10 -3 M

VIDEO Solving Ka, Kb ICE Tables Demonstrated Example 2 (with pH) : If the initial concentration of the base NH 3 was 1.5M, and the Kb is 4.3 * 10 -5 . What would be the pOH be at equilibrium? Use the pH formulas when you need them.

From the chemical equation for the ionization of NH 3

NH 3(aq) + H 2 O (l) <—> NH 4 + (aq) + OH – (aq)

Then set up the ICE table and fill in the information from the problem (I only included aqueous because liquids don’t count for equilibrium).

Now construct the equilibrium equation from the equilibrium values you have. From the question above your Kb is 4.3 * 10 -5 .

We can make an assumption to get rid of the -x in [ 1.5M – x ]. So it becomes [ 1.5 ]. I have also removed the units to make visualization easier.

Multiply both sides by 1.5

Cross out the 1.5 on the left side.

Now we know our [OH-] = 8.03 * 10-3. If we use our pH formulas then we can convert that to a pOH .

COMPLETE ANSWER: pOH = 2.09

VIDEO Solving Ka, Kb ICE Tables Demonstrated Example 3 (polyprotonic acid) : If the initial concentration of H 2 S was 1.3M, and the Ka 1 is 3.5 * 10 -4 and the Ka 2 is 7.9 * 10 -9 . What would be the concentration of H + be at equilibrium?

From the chemical equation for the first ionization of H 2 S.

H 2 S (aq) <—> HS – (aq) + H + (aq)

Now construct the equilibrium equation from the equilibrium values you have. From the question above your Ka 1 is 3.5 * 10 -4

We can make an assumption to get rid of the -x in [ 1.3M – x ]. So it becomes [ 1.3 ]. I have also removed the units to make visualization easier.

Multiply both sides by 1.3

Cross out the 1.3 on the left side.

The [ H + ] from the first ionization is 2.13 * 10 -2 M. Because the [ HS – ] is also 2.13 * 10 -2 M, you can then go on to use this as the new initial concentration for your next equilibrium equation . I will show you the continuation of this problem below. However, as you will notice when I finish, most of the time only the first ionization of an acid contributes significantly to the [ H + ]. That is to say, the first ionization contributes about 99% or more of the value for your overall or final [ H + ]. So whenever I have to do equilibrium problems with polyprotonic acids in them I ONLY DO THE FIRST IONIZATION AND THEN GIVE THAT AS MY ANSWER. So the answer I would give for this problem is 2.13 * 10 -2 M .

Form the second chemical equation for the ionization of HS – .

HS – (aq) <—> S 2- (aq) + H + (aq)

Now construct the equilibrium equation from the equilibrium values you have. From the question above your Ka 2 is 7.9 * 10 -9

We can make an assumption to get rid of the -x in [ 2.13 * 10 -2 – x ]. So it becomes [ 2.13 * 10 -2 ]. I have also removed the units to make visualization easier.

Multiply both sides by 2.13 * 10 -2

Cross out the 2.13 * 10 -2 on the left side.

Bring together the concentrations from the first ionization and the second ionization.

COMPLETE ANSWER: 2.13 * 10 -2 M + 1.30 * 10 -5 M = 2.13 * 10 -2 M

The second ionization adds less than 1% difference so if I have 3 sig figs it does not even count.

PRACTICE PROBLEMS : Solve the Ka or Kb equilibrium ICE table problems below. Use your pH formulas if you need them.

If the initial concentration of the base F – was 12M, and the Kb is 9.4 * 10 -6 . What would be the concentration of OH – be at equilibrium?

Answer: [OH – ] = 1.06 * 10 -2 M

If the initial concentration of the acid NH 4 + was 4.2M, and the Kb is 1.6 * 10 -11 . What would be the concentration of H + be at equilibrium?

Answer: [H + ] = 5.12 * 10 -2 M….use the Kb to get the Ka then solve for [H + ]

If the initial concentration of the BrO 2 – was 0.8M in water, and the Kb is 2.3 * 10 -5 . What would be the pH be at equilibrium?

Answer: pH = 11.6 ….solve for [OH-] and then use the pH formulas for the pH

Carbonic acid is created with an initial concentration of 3M. If the carbonic acid has a Ka 1 of 9.8 * 10 -5 and a Ka 2 of 6.1 * 10 -12 . What would be the pOH be at equilibrium?

Answer: pOH = 12.2 ….solve for [H + ] and then use the pH formulas for the pOH

H 3 PO 4 was put into water at a concentration of 0.098M. The Ka 1 is 1.3 * 10 -3 , the Ka 2 is 7.2 * 10 -6 and the Ka 3 is 5.6 * 10 -9 . What would be the concentration of OH- be at equilibrium?

Answer: [OH – ] = 8.85 * 10 -13 ….….solve for [H + ] and then use the pH formulas for the [OH – ]

Patient acuity tool on a medical-surgical unit

Use a tool for consistent, objective, and quantifiable patient assignments..

  • Patient assignments can lead to dissatisfaction among nursing staff, especially when they’re not consistent, objective, and quantifiable.
  • Dissatisfaction can create barriers to the adaptability and teamwork that are critical to good patient care.
  • The patient acuity tool addresses the important issue of unbalanced nurse-patient assignments and helps nurses influence decision-making in their organizations.

Patient assignments can lead to dissatisfaction among nursing staff, especially when they’re not consistent, objective, and quantifiable. This dissatisfaction can create barriers to the adaptability and teamwork that are so critical to good patient care.

In 2016, three RNs on a complex 23-bed medical-surgical unit at Durham VA Health Care System identified a recurring complaint by nursing staff that patient assignments were inconsistent and unequal. An average of five RNs and one charge nurse were assigned five patients per nurse per shift. The nursing assignment system included placing patients in one of two categories: “standard patient” or “involved care” patient. The problem was the subjectivity of these terms; they had no supporting evidence. The result was frustrated nurses, which prompted the unit to develop a process improvement project.

Hours per patient day: Understanding this key measure of productivity

Purpose and goals

We used evidence-based information to create an objective acuity tool to establish patient assignments. The tool uses both clinical patient characteristics and workload indicators to score patients from 1 to 4 based on acuity level. This approach gives nurses the power to score their patient, then report to the charge nurse so that RN assignments for the oncoming shift are quantifiable and equitable. It also gives them the opportunity to assess the level of patient safety risk.

The goals of the tool are to:

  • increase nurse satisfaction with their patient assignment
  • increase nurse perception of patient safety by assigning patients with high acuity scores equitably.

The patient acuity tool

Each patient is scored on a 1-to-4 scale (1, stable patient; 2, moderate-risk patient; 3, complex patient; 4, high-risk patient) based on the clinical patient characteristics and the care involved (workload.) Each nurse scores his or her patients, based on acuity, for the upcoming shift and relays this information to the charge nurse, who then assigns patients before the shift change. The handoff report between RNs allows each to validate patients’ current acuity and care needs. (See Patient acuity tool .)

Methodology

Anecdotal reports by the RN staff and our observations prompted the collection of data from staff. Some of the staff comments about the current system included:

  • “Why are my patient assignments so unfair?”
  • “How will I care for all of my patients effectively?”
  • “Involved care is a subjective term.”

We conducted a literature review and eventually combined two existing tools and restructured them to create our acuity tool. Before implementing the process improvement project, we used the newly created tool to assess the current average distribution of total acuity among nurse assignments, and we asked RNs to complete a 10-question survey to measure their satisfaction with patient assignments and perceptions of patient safety. We then taught the RNs how to use the tool and placed color-coded, laminated copies at every nursing computer.

The tool was pilot tested for 28 days. After the first 14 days, we conducted an audit to assess compliance, which revealed that average compliance among all four shifts was 35%. We then collected data on the average distribution of total acuity among nurse assignments. Progress e-mails were sent to staff, and individual follow-ups were held to promote compliance. At the end of the 28 days, we conducted another compliance audit, which revealed an average compliance among all four shifts of 77%, an increase of 220%.

At the end of the pilot study, we reviewed patient assignments before and after implementing the acuity tool to assess their equality, and we surveyed RNs about the two goals we set for the project: improve nurse satisfaction and increase nurse perception of patient safety.

Equality of patient assignments

To determine the equality of nurses’ assignments within a shift, the difference in total acuity between the highest and lowest scoring assignments was obtained. (See RN assignments using acuity tool .)

patient acuity tool medical surgical unit sidebar rn assignments

Before implementing the acuity tool, the average distribution of total acuity between highest and lowest nurse assignments for each shift was 4.83 (using a scale of 1 = lowest acuity and 4 = highest acuity). After implementation, the average distribution of total acuity between highest and lowest nurse assignments was 3.06, a 36.6% improvement in equality and accuracy.

Goal 1: Improve nurse satisfaction

Three of the 10 questions in the nurse survey were aimed at nurse satisfaction, including RN perception of patient assignment equality, having input into making assignments, and frequency of feeling overwhelmed with patient assignments. The most significant change occurred with the question “Please rate how frequently you feel overwhelmed with your patient assignment.” Response options were never (1), rarely (2), sometimes (3), frequently (4), and every shift (5). According to the survey, the weighted average of nurse satisfaction was 3.19 before implementing the acuity tool and 2.84 (11% improvement) after.

Goal 2: Increase nurse perception of patient safety

When asked to respond to the statement “I feel like patient safety is a concern when I accept my patient assignment,” RN staff chose from the following options: never (1), rarely (2), sometimes (3), frequently (4), and every shift (5). The weighted average was 3.38 pre-implementation and 3.21 post-implementation, a 5% improvement in RNs’ perception of patient safety. After reviewing the annual performance improvement data, we found no direct correlation between using the acuity tool and patient safety measurements (rate of falls, medication errors, and restraint use). However, by distributing high-acuity patients among nurses, this tool, used in conjunction with other current actions, can reduce the need for patient safety measures such as using sitters and frequent rounding.

We attributed many of the challenges faced during the implementation of this project to staff assignment changes during some 24-hour periods. Sometimes patient assignments changed every 4 hours because of differences in nurse shift length, which left the staff with no consistent communication between shifts. The charge nurse would also occasionally take a patient assignment when patient acuity was high and RN census was low, resulting in outliers in data.

Another challenge included RN staff changes during the pilot study, leading to gaps in education about proper use of the tool, decreased feedback, and less data in post-implementation than pre-implementation. As part of our sustainment plan, we’ll incorporate education on the tool in new staff orientation, adapt it to other medical-surgical units in the hospital, and continue quarterly audits to assess compliance.

Given the original concern by staff that assignments were unequal, one of the strengths of this acuity tool is that it allows nurses to become stakeholders in making patient assignments. In addition, it also gives the charge nurse an objective way to justify assignment rationale. The tool costs no money to implement and requires no special technology. In addition, it’s noninvasive to the unit’s workflow, easy to implement, and easily adapted to different units and their specific needs. We’ve also found that the tool enhances the shift-to-shift handoff report and that it can be used to assign patients based on nurse competence (novice nurses, expert nurses, etc.).

Striking a balance

The patient acuity tool addresses the important issue of unbalanced nurse-patient assignments and helps nurses influence decision-making in their organizations. Our research found that an objective patient acuity tool on a medical-surgical floor could increase assignment equality, improve nurse satisfaction, and improve nurse perception of patient safety. The tool is now being piloted on other units at this facility, and we’ve received consults from other facilities in the Veterans Affairs Health Care System.

Hello, I am working on my DNP project and wondering if I could utilize the PAT here during my study citing it appropriately?

Thank you Nikki

would like to know more about this classification tool, is it still in use or has it been revised? can it be used without copywrite restrictions? is it electronically available

Yes, you can use it but must source the tool appropriately.

I am interested to know how to utilize this acuity tool. I have several nurses complain about assignments, this might be something that our unit could utilize to better assignments.

My name is Tijuana L Parker and we want to use your tool on our unit to see if we can balance the assignments better and improve nurse satisfaction.

Hi Mrs. Andrea Ingram, and Jennifer Powell,

I would like to ask if there is any educational material on how di you roll out your acuity tool.

Dear Mrs. Andrea Ingram, and Jennifer Powell

My name is Myriam Valdema, a DNP student. Thank you for such a fantastic study. I am writing my final project on a patient-acuity tool’s effect on job satisfaction in a medical-surgical Unit. We are currently using the block method to make assignments, and it is not working well for the nurses. With your permission, I would like to use the tool to provide better patient assignments while improving patients’ safety.

Sincerely, Myriam Valdema BSN, RN

Thank you for the great article Andrea Ingram and Jennifer Powell. I am writing to seek permission to reuse the tool for our tertiary hospital. Let me know the psychometric properties of the tool or Has it been tested for validity and reliability. Sincerely Dr.Asha Raj Sudha

Dear Mrs. Andrea Ingram, and Jennifer Powell, Thank you for a very intersting study. We are interested in implementing it in our hospital. May we ask : 1) Is it applicable to all types of patient population or restricted to medical surgical as the the title of the article suggests? 2) Has it been tested for validity and reliability and can be safely used to assess the patients acuity. 3) Has it been successfuly in other hospitals? 4) Is there a copyright if want to use?

We started a project on my unit about four years ago using EPIC to created a tool for our surgical trauma progressive care. Working with our EMR nurse team, we were able to customize the tool to fit our patient population. If you would like more information, please let me know.

Patrice, I would love to know how you utilized EPIC to create an acuity tool. I am currently working on finding or creating one for my department. I would love if you could reach out to me. My personal email is wiels1987 at gmail. Thank you.

Interesting article, thank you for acknowledging and taking action to help improve a system. It would be ideal to have a universal acutiy tool that all units can adapt to their speciality. I was wondering how you than use this tool to decide how many staff you require on the ward? If you have so many orange and red level patients, are you able to aquire more staff? Or are you only using this tool to allocate patients equitably between the 5 staff you have?

I was wondering if we would be able to reference the acuity tool in an EVB project we are doing?

This is an interesting article, but I think the use of quantitative measures such as means on ordinal scales is incorrect. First, the score (1, stable patient; 2, moderate-risk patient; 3, complex patient; 4, high-risk patient) is made to be ordinal, therefore, the interpretation “the average distribution of total acuity between highest and lowest nurse assignments for each shift was 4.83” is not appropriate and should not be used. The difference between “stable patient”, “moderate-risk patient” and “complex patient” are not equal. In other words, one cannot assume that the difference between responses is equidistant even though the numbers assigned to those responses are. The same interpretive problem is present for the question “Please rate how frequently you feel overwhelmed with your patient assignment”. The response options were never (1), rarely (2), sometimes (3), frequently (4), and every shift (5). The comment : “the weighted average of nurse satisfaction was 3.19 before implementing the acuity tool and 2.84 (11% improvement) after.”, is also incorrect. I would suggest reporting the percentage of each classes and the median (1). This would be transparent and avoid false interpretations if the answers were clustered at the high and low extremes.

Secondly, I understand the need to have an objective tool and I also chase this goal, but when I read the table “RN assignments using acuity tool”, I come to the conclusion that it is not at all objective and that the nurse’s classification is completely subjective. Either the tool needs to be less interpretation-free and have more quantitative criterias or the nurses need to have the same interpretation of each criteria before using the tool.

I want to thank you for your work as it is a great start and hope you continue to enhance this potentially powerful tool.

I am interested in using a Patient Acuity tool for my DNP project. Can I use this tool? Thank you. Catherine Bell MSN RNC

Dear Mrs. Andrea Ingram, and Jennifer Powell, I am interested in using a Patient Acuity tool for my project. Can I use this tool? Thank you.

Thank you Great article. I was wanting to contact author about the possibility of using this tool.

I am writting in regards to “patient acuity tool on a medical surgical unit” I am currently connected with a regional hospital (government owned) here in the philippines with a bed capacity of 800 but in reality it is way more than that since we are not allowed to refuse a patient since we are the end refferal hospital in our region.. my hospital have not adapted any tool on patient assignment that most often led to nurse job unsatisfaction and burnt out. And i think your study will be of great help. But before my hospital can adapt this, it has to be grounded with a study and so I will be making a study on this and would like to use also your survey with some revisions that is applicable to us if you could allow me. Thank you in advance.

Thank you all for the responses to the article! I am sorry it has taken me this long to respond, but I would love to provide the survey used. Unfortunately, I’m only able to find 6 of the 10 questions (my account used for the online survey was deleted) but I hope these questions help you.

Re: Liz Doll, I’m so glad you would find this tool helpful. You are more than welcome to adapt our tool to fit your patient population. I hope it works out well for your staff!

1. How long have you been a nurse? 2. How long have you been a nurse on 6A? (the name of our unit) 3. In my opinion, I feel that patient assignments are equal between nursing staff. (Strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree.) 4. In my opinion, I feel like I have input into making the nursing assignments. (Strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree.) 5. Please rate how frequently you feel overwhelmed with your patient assignment. (Frequently, sometimes, rarely, never.) 6. I feel like patient safety is a concern when I accept my patient assignment. (Every shift, frequently, sometimes, rarely, never.)

Loved this study and was wondering if there’d be a way to get a copy of the survey used? Thank you!

Is there a way to get a copy of the survey questions used? This is a great article!

Thank you for this insightful article. Our hospital is expanding beds and we have been using this tool to ensure our new units are properly staffed. With your permission, our team would like to make slight modifications to this tool to better fit our unique patient population. Please let me know your thoughts!

I am writing in regards to “Patient acuity tool on a medical-surgical unit” (Morrow and Powell, 2018). I believe patient acuity is a critical aspect to take into consideration when looking at staffing and nursing assignments. I agree with method the article used, creating a tool to score patient acuity. It is important to have an objective way to determine the acuity and fairly assign patients to a nurse. Having a balanced assignment benefits not only nurses by decreasing their workload, but also extends to the patients by giving them better outcomes. As a bedside nurse I have experienced overwhelming, unbalanced patient assignments. Being stretched thin forces me to be more task-oriented rather than patient centered, as I would prefer. Several months ago the unit I work for started utilizing a tool similar to the one mentioned in the article. By giving us an objective way to rate the acuity of a patient it lead to more balanced the assignments. It gave us more of a say in the assignments, the charge nurses ask us our opinions on our patient group and if they need to be separated for the next shift. This makes us feel as though we have a voice and give the charge nurse an objective way to fairly make assignments (Morrow, 2018). Overall, RNs who rated their assignments as appropriate were more likely to be satisfied with their jobs, intend to stay on their current units, and deliver quality care to patients than those who rated their assignments as inappropriate. Registered nurses who said that their assignments were appropriate are more likely have higher job satisfaction and deliver higher quality care to patients as opposed to nurses who said their patient assignments were inappropriate and unbalanced (Choi, 2018). I find that in my own practice, a balanced mix of acuity within an assignment group I am able to spend more face-to-face time with each patient as opposed to having a group of patients who are all considered high acuity. Utilizing a patient classification system is a low cost tool that nurse leaders can ensure that nurses are receiving equal assignments.

Sincerely, Carrie Young, RN

Use our assignment agreement to transfer contractual obligations.

Assignment Agreement Template

Updated February 1, 2024 Reviewed by Brooke Davis

An assignment agreement is a legal document that transfers rights, responsibilities, and benefits from one party (the “assignor”) to another (the “assignee”). You can use it to reassign debt, real estate, intellectual property, leases, insurance policies, and government contracts.

What Is an Assignment Agreement?

What to include in an assignment agreement, how to assign a contract, how to write an assignment agreement, assignment agreement sample.

trademark assignment agreement template

Partnership Interest

An assignment agreement effectively transfers the rights and obligations of a person or entity under an initial contract to another. The original party is the assignor, and the assignee takes on the contract’s duties and benefits.

It’s often a requirement to let the other party in the original deal know the contract is being transferred. It’s essential to create this form thoughtfully, as a poorly written assignment agreement may leave the assignor obligated to certain aspects of the deal.

The most common use of an assignment agreement occurs when the assignor no longer can or wants to continue with a contract. Instead of leaving the initial party or breaking the agreement, the assignor can transfer the contract to another individual or entity.

For example, imagine a small residential trash collection service plans to close its operations. Before it closes, the business brokers a deal to send its accounts to a curbside pickup company providing similar services. After notifying account holders, the latter company continues the service while receiving payment.

Create a thorough assignment agreement by including the following information:

  • Effective Date:  The document must indicate when the transfer of rights and obligations occurs.
  • Parties:  Include the full name and address of the assignor, assignee, and obligor (if required).
  • Assignment:  Provide details that identify the original contract being assigned.
  • Third-Party Approval: If the initial contract requires the approval of the obligor, note the date the approval was received.
  • Signatures:  Both parties must sign and date the printed assignment contract template once completed. If a notary is required, wait until you are in the presence of the official and present identification before signing. Failure to do so may result in having to redo the assignment contract.

Review the Contract Terms

Carefully review the terms of the existing contract. Some contracts may have specific provisions regarding assignment. Check for any restrictions or requirements related to assigning the contract.

Check for Anti-Assignment Clauses

Some contracts include anti-assignment clauses that prohibit or restrict the ability to assign the contract without the consent of the other party. If there’s such a clause, you may need the consent of the original parties to proceed.

Determine Assignability

Ensure that the contract is assignable. Some contracts, especially those involving personal services or unique skills, may not be assignable without the other party’s agreement.

Get Consent from the Other Party (if Required)

If the contract includes an anti-assignment clause or requires consent for assignment, seek written consent from the other party. This can often be done through a formal amendment to the contract.

Prepare an Assignment Agreement

Draft an assignment agreement that clearly outlines the transfer of rights and obligations from the assignor (the party assigning the contract) to the assignee (the party receiving the assignment). Include details such as the names of the parties, the effective date of the assignment, and the specific rights and obligations being transferred.

Include Original Contract Information

Attach a copy of the original contract or reference its key terms in the assignment agreement. This helps in clearly identifying the contract being assigned.

Execution of the Assignment Agreement

Both the assignor and assignee should sign the assignment agreement. Signatures should be notarized if required by the contract or local laws.

Notice to the Other Party

Provide notice of the assignment to the non-assigning party. This can be done formally through a letter or as specified in the contract.

File the Assignment

File the assignment agreement with the appropriate parties or entities as required. This may include filing with the original contracting party or relevant government authorities.

Communicate with Third Parties

Inform any relevant third parties, such as suppliers, customers, or service providers, about the assignment to ensure a smooth transition.

Keep Copies for Records

Keep copies of the assignment agreement, original contract, and any related communications for your records.

Here’s a list of steps on how to write an assignment agreement:

Step 1 – List the Assignor’s and Assignee’s Details

List all of the pertinent information regarding the parties involved in the transfer. This information includes their full names, addresses, phone numbers, and other relevant contact information.

This step clarifies who’s transferring the initial contract and who will take on its responsibilities.

Step 2 – Provide Original Contract Information

Describing and identifying the contract that is effectively being reassigned is essential. This step avoids any confusion after the transfer has been completed.

Step 3 – State the Consideration

Provide accurate information regarding the amount the assignee pays to assume the contract. This figure should include taxes and any relevant peripheral expenses. If the assignee will pay the consideration over a period, indicate the method and installments.

Step 4 – Provide Any Terms and Conditions

The terms and conditions of any agreement are crucial to a smooth transaction. You must cover issues such as dispute resolution, governing law, obligor approval, and any relevant clauses.

Step 5 – Obtain Signatures

Both parties must sign the agreement to ensure it is legally binding and that they have read and understood the contract. If a notary is required, wait to sign off in their presence.

What is Assignment Number ?

The assignment number and assignment code both are the same things on the IGNOU assignment cover page. This helps the teacher to identify which session the student belongs to and for which session exams the student submitted the assignment. For example, if your course code is BCOS-183 and you are having your exams in June/Dec 2024, then your assignment number/assignment code will be like this BCOS-183/TMA/23-24 , where TMA Stands for Tutor Marked Assignments. You will find the assignment number on your IGNOU assignment question paper , as seen in the image below.

These all describe the same thing: that is the student session he belongs to, so if you have asked session on the front page, fill in your current session, you will get your session in your IGNOU Registration Portal .
