Once Upon a Time in a Western

6 guns (2010).

6 guns movie review

So while Stevens, mortally wounded, lies watching, Horn has both of his young sons shot. Then he and his men take turns raping his wife, Selina (Sage Mears).

When they’re finished, he orders one of his men to kill Selina. The man fires a shot into the air instead.

That means everyone knows who committed the killings, of course, and bounty hunter Frank Allison (Barry Van Dyke) decides to make the Horn gang his next prey.

Turns out he doesn’t have to go far.

Upon learning that Selina is still alive, Horn turns his gang around and heads back to Bisbee to finish the job.

In the meantime, Selina decides this mysterious stranger / bounty hunter should teach her to shoot so she can get her own revenge.

Sorta a low-budget Hannie Caulder meets Clint Eastwood that could have benefitted from better performances in the lead roles of Frank Allison and Selina Stevens.

The scene early in the film when the Horn gang visits the Stevens home will certainly grab your attention. Unfortunately, the film never again matches that level of intensity.

Still, it’s better than many 21st century low-budget Westerns. If you don’t stop to ask why the outlaws would turn around to kill the lone survivor of a massacre when everyone already knows they’re responsible for the crime.

Memorable lines:

Frank Allison, after gunning down an outlaw he’s caught bedding a saloon girl in a jail cell: “Now I don’t much like whores. So you’re going to be quiet. Understand? Else you’ll end up just like him.” Saloon girl Vilma, as Allison locks the jail cell: “What are you doing?” Frank: “I’ll be back in a while. Unless you make a racket. Then I’ll be back soon.”

Frank Allison, showing Selina how to shoot: “Arch your elbow, but don’t bend it too much either. It’ll kick back and hit you right in the face. Knew a fellow broke his nose once like that in a gunfight. Made a mess.”

In the American Wild West in the late 1800s, a notorious outlaw named Sam Starr is on the run from the law after a string of robberies and murders. However, his plans take an unexpected turn when he kidnaps a widow named Selina Stevens and her young daughter, Lily, as part of his getaway. As Selina and Lily adapt to life with their captors, they begin to realize that not everything is as it seems with Sam and his men.

Meanwhile, a determined sheriff named Fowler is hot on Sam's trail and will do whatever it takes to bring him to justice. With a posse of men at his side, Fowler is prepared to take down Sam and anyone who gets in his way. However, as the two groups approach each other, they begin to realize that there may be more at stake than just capturing an outlaw.

6 Guns is an action-packed western that combines the thrill of a classic shoot-em-up with a touching family drama. The film stars Barry Van Dyke as Sam Starr, an outlaw with a heart of gold who finds himself questioning his own actions when confronted with the innocence of Selina and Lily. Sage Mears delivers a powerful performance as Selina, a strong-willed woman who refuses to be broken by her captors. Greg Evigan plays Sheriff Fowler with a steely determination and single-minded focus, while Brian Wimmer adds a touch of humor as one of Sam's loyal henchmen.

One of the film's strengths is its attention to detail in recreating the look and feel of the Wild West. The beautiful landscapes and wide-open spaces of the American frontier are captured in stunning detail, transporting the viewer back in time to a world of stagecoaches, saloons, and shootouts. The costumes and props are also spot-on, evoking the rough-and-tumble lifestyle of the era.

However, what really sets 6 Guns apart is its underlying themes of family, redemption, and the struggle between good and evil. At its heart, the film is a story about a mother and daughter finding strength in the face of adversity and a man trying to find his way back to the right path. These emotional themes add depth and complexity to what could have been a straightforward action movie, elevating it to something more.

Overall, 6 Guns is a well-crafted western that offers a little something for everyone. Fans of shoot-em-ups will appreciate the thrilling gunfights and high-octane action sequences, while those looking for something more thought-provoking will appreciate the film's underlying messages. With a talented cast, beautiful visuals, and a gripping story, 6 Guns is a must-see for anyone who loves a good Western.

6 Guns is a 2010 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.1.

6 guns movie review

Now streaming on:

With "2 Guns," Universal Pictures has taken box office pleading to a new level: The desired opening weekend gross is written directly into the script. With a budget around $80 million, "2 Guns" etches into your subconscious mind a little more than half that amount, brainwashing you into telling your friends to donate their ticket money. This sounds far-fetched until you count the number of times someone says the perceived target number, $43.125 million. Say it with me: "Forty-three point one-two-five million dollars." Marvel at the memorable unwieldiness of the phrase. This amount drives the plot, is a concern for every character, and is uttered around 43.125 million times. Each main actor gets multiple chances to say it with his or her personal spin. Bill Paxton has the most fun with it; his slow, staccato mentions sound like a Hemingway sentence read aloud.

If you remember nothing else about 2 Guns, you'll remember the exact amount that gets most of its cast killed. The money appears onscreen as an enormous, gasp-inducing pile of cash. Director Baltasar Kormákur and cinematographer Oliver Wood always shoot it from above, usually with someone in frame as a visual counterpoint. It would take 43.125 million rap videos set in strip clubs to match the fetishistic glee with which this money is presented, especially in the film's climax.

Money corrupts, and everyone in "2 Guns" is afflicted: The drug cartel leader, the cops, the DEA, the CIA, and the Navy all get dumped into the same bottomless pit of deceit. Double-crosses abound, starting with those of our protagonists Bobby ( Denzel Washington ) and Stig ( Mark Wahlberg ). They plan to rob a bank across the street from a diner with "the best donuts in 3 counties." Neither is aware that the other is on the right side of the law—Bobby's DEA and Stig is with the Navy. The duo, who have been operating together over two years, plan to frame each other as a means to the same end: the capture of drug lord Papi Greco ( Edward James Olmos ). The targeted bank supposedly contains Greco's drug money in safe deposit boxes.

I was surprised how long the film keeps us in the dark on the intentions of Bobby and Stig. The commercials and the trailer reveal their identities immediately. After the robbery, and the discovery of far more money than anticipated, Stig shoots Bobby when the latter reveals his true identity. Stig is repaid for his Naval loyalty by the murderous intent of his superior officers Quince ( James Marsden ) and Jessup ( Robert John Burke ). These and other familiar plot devices lead to the reteaming of Bobby and Stig. Mucho macho mayhem ensues.

The trailer also reveals that the oft-mentioned $43.125 million doesn't belong to Papi Greco. The true owners of the money are represented by Earl (Bill Paxton), a Southern-fried cross between Anton Chigurh and Chang from " Only God Forgives ." Earl asks everyone he encounters for that money, starting with the poor manager of the knocked off bank. When Earl doesn't get answers, he tortures and brutalizes his victims. Paxton clearly enjoys his sadism, bringing to it a committed, pitch-black comic vibe. This makes his every appearance an uneasy one.

Along for the ride is Deb ( Paula Patton ), Bobby's on-again, off-again DEA agent love interest. As expected, she provides the brief nudity the MPAA description warned you about. With the easy chemistry she has with her "John Q" co-star, she also provides some emotional heft for Bobby. While she's eventually a major cog in this machine of a plot, this is still a boys' club of a movie. Bobby and Stig go after all those who wronged them, forming the predictable bromance along the way. It's a cinematically natural path for these characters, even if this love affair is consummated by bullets piercing each other's flesh.

You've seen all this before, and many times. "2 Guns" works because it's essentially several riffs on familiar material. Cliché is not a bad thing if it's done right. Like a good jazz improvisation, "2 Guns" leads to the same place but not the way you may expect. The tone, pacing and staging of the action sequences are pleasantly surprising. This is a slower, more meditative film than advertised, finding time for quirkiness and humorous banter alongside the explosions.

The acting is better than the standard action film requires. Patton manages to wring conflicting emotions from her character and from us. As Stig, Wahlberg plays an even more over-the-top version of his cop character from "The Other Guys." He's funny, a tad sadistic, and manages a sincerity toward Washington that feels genuine. As Bobby, Denzel is Denzel, charming, a bit goofy, and incredibly unflappable. When Earl literally threatens Bobby's manhood, Paxton and Denzel play the scene as the coolest satire on masculinity I've seen in ages. Edward James Olmos has more character, world-weariness and intimidation in one line of his famously textured face than the screenplay offers Papi Greco, which makes him a less of a caricature.

The real star here is that money. The sheer physical size of it makes it damn near impossible to transport. "2 Guns" gets plenty of mileage from this; when Stig tells Bobby to take it all, I thought about how long it must have taken him to load it into their car. Later, in the film's best sequence, said money not only upstages Bobby and Stig but elevates them to their highest level of badass. Flying through the air after a car explosion that should have incinerated it completely, that $43.125 million cascades over our heroes who, with their backs to one another, open fire on their opponents. You can see that on the commercials. It looks a lot better when you're sitting in the theater.

Film School Drop Out Challenge - Week 38 - Genre - Western - Post-50s Revisionist Western

A gang hellbent on revenge heads to the house of a retired sheriff and kills him, his two kids, and leaves his wife for dead. But she survives and seeks help from a bounty hunter.

Certainly not a unique plot but in and of itself that's okay. The real problem is it's pretty low budget, especially from the actors. I had never heard of any of them before and many have apparently only been in this and maybe a couple other Asylum films, so that's never a good sign. The lead female (Sage Mears) is not great in her role. She has never learned…

Erwin Vanhomwegen

Review by Erwin Vanhomwegen ★★½

We used to have in our Western club "The Smokewagon" two acts called : Angeleyes and Revenge. The movie 6 guns is a mixture of both acts. Angeleyes is a story about a killer / gunfighter - Angeleyes is a woman... Revenge is a story about a person who is left for dead, after he recovered he's comming back ... for revenge.

The clothing, weapons and gunbelts where all right. I meant - no hollywood holsters, but the "high riders". I'm glad I saw this western, but I won't see it again soon. Maybe in a few months...

Wide variety of shooting venues with friendly people. Sunday skeet shoots are a great way to get know the members and staff

Photo of Nick N.

Rebel against the Tourist magnet go cart tracks, mini golf, bungee jumping carnival like fun house rides and go shooting. Tennessee is the patron state of shootin' stuff. Mark Wahberg even said so in the movie "Shooter". Escape from the valley of tourist hell and head up the hill to Gatlinburg, make a left and BOOYAH, you're there. Bring your shotgun or rent one for 5 bucks. Try your hand at skeet or trap shooting. I shoot pretty regular and was looking for some practice time. Mike greeted me at the range and was super nice, not because he was sipping out of a moonshine jug and said I had a purty mouth (Mike was dressed in a uniform and super professional). No pressure...no stupid house rules...take your time, get out on the range and have a good time. These folks run a clean friendly range and are nicer than Mother Theresa. I brought a buddy who had never shot a gun before and they made him feel like a regular. When his rookie ass dropped a shell somewhere and ended up 1 short at the end of the round, Mike handed him a spare shell and said his box probably came short 1 round. I want to play poker with this guy! Value! $6 for a round of skeet is butt ass cheap. $5 for gun rental....really? That's a steal. Friendly conversation and a swell time in the hills of Tennessee ...away from the wife, kids and tourist hell called Pigeon Forge. Priceless. FYI, call ahead since this is a private club and you need a code to get through the gate. I don't have the number...google it yourself. Bottom Line: If you aspire to something more than doing laps in a NASCAR replica 1.5 HP go cart or playing Putt Putt with Sponge Bob, go on over to Gatlinburg Sportsmans Club and shoot some trap or skeet. Wipe the funnel cake sugar from your face and go shoot some real guns. Mabe you'll score some man points with the fellas around the water cooler when you say you went shooting on your miserable vacation.

Stardew Valley Player's Wholesome Act Of Kindness For Linus Deserves A Canon Place In-Game

Leaked epic games free game for may 30 comes with one major caveat, stylish new steam game is perfect for people waiting for hollow knight: silksong, quick links, a perfect entry to 2d fighters, world tour is single player heaven, battle hub is the future of online multiplayer modes, final thoughts & our review score.

Capcom's Street Fighter 6 feels like the culmination of 35 years' worth of lessons. A pristine experience that's jam-packed with exciting modes, revolutionary online play, and new controls that will help rookie players enjoy the series stands as perhaps the best Street Fighter game yet.

While the series' last few main entries launched lacking a full roster of characters and missing modes that were both later added in, Street Fighter 6 makes up for those bare-bones releases. Besides being a fantastic entry point into the series, and 2D fighters in general, SF6 's World Tour story mode, Battle Hub, and Fighting Grounds provide more content than any games in the series to date.

Related: Street Fighter 6 Roster: All Confirmed Characters

The Street Fighter series is filled with iconic special attacks that have required some complex button combinations to pull off. While the Classic control style is still available, two new control styles are game changers for those intimidated by the series' complicated movesets: Modern and Dynamic. Modern controls provide buttons for Light, Medium, and Heavy attacks, but now special attacks like the Hadoken can be executed with a single button press. Dynamic controls allow players to move around, but AI determines which attacks to perform depending on the situation. Dynamic controls feel perfect for players who want to button mash but still want to pull off flashy combos.

Several gameplay adjustments have been made for Street Fighter 6 , including the return of Drive Impacts. First introduced in SF4 , these absorb certain attacks and deliver a powerful heavy attack that can quickly turn the tide of any battle. However, a Drive Parry has also been added that has a player assume a stance surrounded by a blue aura that, with the right timing, can deflect damage and open up opponents for impressive counters. Both Drive abilities drain a stamina meter that fills up over time or with well-timed parries.

With three different control formats and the ability to completely remap controls how players see fit, SF6 feels incredibly easy to pick up and play for players of all skill levels. Besides control options, the game features several tutorial and training modes that effectively teach step-by-step the mechanics of each character and tools to improve the players' skills. Street Fighter 6 shows players the ins and outs of the 2D fighting genre, with skills that should easily transfer to any other fighting game.

Players who find playing online against others to be an intimidating experience can breathe easy, because Street Fighter 6 provides many activities that will further improve their skills. World Tour creates a character from scratch, with a detailed Character Creator that is capable of accurately recreating favorite characters from fiction to horrible abominations. These custom characters star in their own story mode where they will explore Metro City (of Final Fight fame), visit other areas around the world, and challenge NPCs to fight in a mode that provides one of the most in-depth fighting game story modes in recent memory.

Metro City is the largest and most prominent location in the mode that's filled with shops, currency-earning minigames, and lots of battles. Although Mayor Mike Hagger famously cleaned up the crime-infested city streets in the game Final Fight , strange gangs and many hungry for a good battle continue to occupy Metro City, especially at nighttime. Players can approach most NPCs and challenge them to a match, or get attacked by enemies overly anxious to fight. Both types of fights earn experience and special items that can boost stats, provide health, or customize apparel. Completing specific actions during fights unlocks these items and helps add variation to every battle.

Popular characters from Capcom's Final Fight and Street Fighter 6 's cast of fighters can be found and fought throughout the World Tour mode. However, their fighting styles and special attacks can be learned and mixed with others to create a unique customized fighter. The custom characters are currently not playable in the game's versus mode. Still, the amount of customization options and variety of playstyles available that can be changed throughout the well-constructed single-player story is a staggering contrast to what SF5 released with.

Beside's the expansive World Tour mode, SF6 's Fighting Grounds has even more single and multiplayer content to enjoy. The classic Arcade mode returns, allowing players to take control of one of the game's 18 playable fighters and battle their way up the ranks, unlocking artwork and tidbits of lore for each character. Six brand-new fighters join the series with a launch roster that feels plentiful in playstyles, and more are on the way. Four characters are set to release as DLC (Rashid, A.K.I., Ed, and Akuma) within Street Fighter 6 's first year, and more are likely to follow.

For players wanting to play with friends or rank up in the game's multiplayer, Street Fighter 6 's Battle Hub pushes what an online multiplayer mode should be. Instead of staring at a menu while Matchmaking looks for matches, custom characters are free to wander the sizeable online hub. Digital arcade cabinets populate the space and players can interact with them to battle, practice, and even play classic Capcom games like Final Fight or previous Street Fighter games with other players. Matches of other players can also be watched, making the Battle Hub a prime layout for tournaments. At its best, the mode helps capture an esports event's excitement, especially with SF6 's optional Real-Time Commentary.

Special Matches is another Street Fighter 6 multiplayer mode available in the online Battle Hub and the Fighting Grounds. The mode includes unique challenges and obstacles that add fun variations to the classic 2D fighter formula. One example challenges fighters to race against one another to complete a list of actions in a battle against another player who has different actions to complete. Another has players fight while an angry bull charges across the screen every few seconds, while another transforms both players' HP bars into one teeter-totter as players battle to get more health. These challenges and more can also be mixed and matched to create exciting challenges between friends.

With everything that Street Fighter 6 includes, it's set the bar incredibly high for future fighting games. Online matches played flawlessly during the review period. The Battle Hub is an example of how online multiplayer game lobbies should be with a space where players can interact and even play other games together. A well-balanced roster of characters and new control options helps Street Fighter 6 stand tall as an excellent entry point for fighting games, while also containing the depth and precise gameplay that pros expect.
