Hello everyone! Application process is a stressful time, there’s so much to remember. Each application has different requirements, different deadlines, and exhaustive processes. I remember the time I was applying for my masters, and along with a full-time (very demanding job), the admission process was super tiring and me, emotionally and physically!

That’s why I have created a basic list of Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students, so you don’t miss out on anything.

There are no extra Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students, other than the standardized English language test, which is required of all international applicants. Submit the online application form with required fee. Other than that, submit your GRE/SAT/GMAT score, TOEFL score, college/school marksheets, recommendation letters and personal statement. Some Harvard schools also have additional requirements such as resume, portfolio or interview.

So let’s go over the list of Harvard University admission requirements one by one.

1. Digital Application

Most universities have now made digital applications mandatory. Harvard University has had digital applications for many years now. The digital application is the first thing you should submit , because once they formally receive your duly filled in application form, only then are your other application materials like transcripts and test scores accepted by the university’s admissions office.

Of course, be sure to check the deadline of the digital application . The sooner you submit it, the better it is, as admissions offices sometimes keep pre-shortlisting students based on these. So submitting your digital application before deadline/asap is one of the first Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students.   application requirements for Harvard College

2. Application Fee

The digital application has to be submitted with the application fee, which may be $90 or so depending on the College or graduate school you’re applying to. You can check the application fee in your school’s website. Some schools may even waive the application fee if requested by students who have financial difficulty paying it.

3. Standardized Test Scores

There are many different types of standardized admission tests. And schools almost always require you to digitally transmit the scores of the required test(s). Here are some examples of tests required by different schools:

1. Harvard College requires standardized test scores from either the SAT or ACT (with or without writing). They even recommend submitting two SAT subject tests, neither of which may be the SAT II English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT).

2. Harvard Law School (HLS) requires the score of LSAT to be submitted.

3. Harvard Business School (HBS) and Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) accept Graduate Record Exam ( GRE ) or Graduate Management Admissions Test ( GMAT ) test scores.

4. Many Harvard graduate schools such as Ed School and Design school accept GRE scores.

So check your school’s website to see which score they accept. Please note that the GRE/GMAT/LSAT/SAT scores need to be sent to the university directly from the testing service , otherwise they’re not reviewed. So be sure to take your school’s institution code with you before you appear for the test.

Additionally, make sure to take an early test date so as to ensure the testing service sends your scores to your school before the deadline . Schools only accept recent test scores, mostly a GRE/LSAT needs to have been taken within 5 years of the deadline . So check your school’s website to see if your old score is still vaild or not (they give exact dates).

If you’ve taken more than one GRE test, some schools check your scores from both tests to compare your performance over time. So keep that in mind before you make up your mind to take the test again.

4. English Language Test – TOEFL

All international students, including Indians are required to take the standardized English language tests, especially if their native language is English. In India, even if you’re raised as bilingual or went to English-medium school or college, you still need to submit your TOEFL score . Some Harvard schools also require a  minimum TOEFL score from all applicants. So make sure to check that while preparing to take the test.

5. Transcripts

Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students include transcripts, marksheets or grade reports. You’ll need to submit the official transcripts from any previous schools, colleges or universities you have received a degree or credit.

To apply to Harvard College, you need to submit Secondary School Report (including transcripts) and Mid-Year School Report for College. For applying to grad schools, submit a hard copy of your college degree transcripts /attested marksheets , reflecting all the subjects you took, and your marks/grades for each semester/exam. They need to be attested by your college registrar so as to appear official/ authentic.

If your college does not issue marksheets or transcripts, submit an official letter from them listing courses and examinations taken, grades, and degrees and dates of degrees received.

If you were homeschooled, you may be required to create your own marksheets. Or get a letter from your parents/tutors about the exams taken. Or your scores from any standardized tests/exams you’ve taken.

6. Letter of Intent/ Statement of Purpose

This is one of the most important parts of Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students. Or any student for that matter. Your LoI/SoP should be 1-2 pages long and originally describe your experience, ambition, and why you’re applying to the particular program. It should basically identify why you’re the perfect candidate to be admitted, and how it will help you with your long-term passion or goal.

There can be so many tips I can give with writing a winning essay, so I’ll save those tips for another article. But do more research on your Harvard school’s admission website to see what exactly they expect from this letter. Ultimately, this letter sets you apart from other applicants, and helps to seal the deal!

7. Letters of Recommendation

Every Harvard school requires applicants to submit 2-3 letters of recommendation , depending on the school you’re applying to. So check your school’s admission page to see how many are required. They may even specify who these letters should ideally be from. If you have work experience, it’s typically a good idea to submit at least one letter from your employer. If you’re fresh out of college or school, a letter or two from your college dean or senior professor is a good idea. For example, Harvard College application requires two teacher evaluations.

Get letters from professors or employer of authority, but those who really know about your work, so that they can give a glowing letter of recommendation. Some schools even call up and ask your recommender to verify the letter or ask further questions about you.

Not all Harvard grad schools require applicants to submit a resume. For example, Harvard Business School requires applicants to submit a business resume. Mostly, graduate schools that prefer work experience may require resumes. It may even be optional, so check on your school’s website admission requirements to cross-check.

9. Portfolio

Certain schools like Harvard Graduate School of Design require applicants of certain degree programs to submit a design portfolio. For these schools, portfolio is one of the most important Harvard University admission requirements. The portfolio requires you to visually represent your scholarly, academic and/or professional work . Here are the requirements specified on the GSD website for portfolio:

Pages: 30 max (Cover pages or table of contents don’t count) File Size: 40MB max Page Layout: 12” x 18” or A3, two-page spreads should be combined into one page (recommended). Color Format: RGB (recommended). Resolution: 150 dpi (recommended).

Be sure to check the updated requirements at the time of your application before you put together the portfolio. It needs to be submitted digitally, and may even be accompanied with a video portfolio.

10. Interview

Harvard College and some grad schools allow applicant interviews. Not all Harvard schools recommend interviews as a part of the admission process. So this is something that you want to check on the school’s admission page. Sometimes, the school you applied to may also inform applicants via telephone that an interview is necessary to finally judge their application. But that didn’t happen in my case.

For example, Harvard Business School (HBS) invites applicants for 30-minute interviews. If they are invited, they have to participate, either in person or on Skype.

So I hope I was able to clarify all Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students. The admission process for Harvard is pretty standard compared to other universities in the US. So if you’re applying to other unis, you won’t find Harvard application specifically a hassle.

PhD in Indian Philosophy

Program details, eligibility.

1. PhD students admitted to the Department of South Asian Studies and the Department of Philosophy are eligible to apply to the program in the spring of their G2 year .

2. Applications, which must be submitted to the Department of South Asian Studies or the Department of Philosophy, will be based on (i) coursework, which must include at least 3 upper level courses in Philosophy ,  with grades of A- or better, and evidence of proficiency in either Sanskrit or Tibetan, ordinarily 2 courses at the intermediate or advanced level; (ii) the support of at least one, and preferably two, faculty members in the Department of Philosophy and the Department of South Asian Studies; (iii) a writing sample—which may be developed into a “second year paper” in the Department of Philosophy; and (iv) a course of study and a rationale for it.  *See the “Application Checklist” below.

3. Language Requirements

Candidates who plan to write a dissertation in Indian Philosophy are expected to have learned at least one of the relevant classical languages (Sanskrit or Tibetan) before they are admitted to the program. Depending upon the level of fluency they have reached before entering the program, they may be asked to take additional language or reading courses. In addition, candidates will be expected to have satisfied their home Department’s language or language and tools requirement.

Thesis committee, which must be approved by both Departments,  must have at least 2 members approved by the Department of Philosophy (for students in South Asian Studies) or the  Department of South Asian Studies (for students in Philosophy). For further details, consult the relevant Department’s description of their graduate program.

Financial Aid

All admitted students are awarded a financial package which includes tuition, single-person health insurance, living stipend for the first two years, teaching and research assistant stipends and a completion fellowship in the final year of the program.

International Applications

Adequate command of spoken and written English is required for admission. Applicants whose native language is other than English and who do not hold a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an institution at which English is the language of instruction must submit  TOEFL  or IELTS scores.

TOEFL/IELTS scores are valid for two years. (scores must be from no earlier than January 5, 2022 for Fall 2024 admission). The committee prefers scores of at least 100 on the internet-based test.  Institution Codes for Toefl score reports PhD programs: 3451

Reapplicants

Applicants who applied last year are considered reapplicants. Those reapplying must submit a completely new application. The new application must include all required documents to be provided by the applicant - we will not re-use material previously submitted. These materials include an updated statement of purpose, transcripts, test score reports, updated letters of recommendation, the application fee, and any other supporting materials

Please note, Harvard University will accept no more than three applications from any one individual over the course of his/her lifetime.

Applying to more than one Program

Harvard has several PhD programs that may also be of interest to students considering applying to the PhD program in economics. These include Business Economics, Political Economy and Government, Public Policy, and Health Policy.  Many students in these programs have considerable overlap in their coursework with courses offered to PhD students in economics.   Many also have dissertation committees that include faculty members of the economics department. Please refer to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences for applicable program deadlines.  (Deadlines have already passed for some programs this year but not for others.) We encourage those with interest in any of those programs to also apply to those programs. The economics department will make admissions decisions independently, so application to or admission to other programs will not adversely affect admissions decisions within the Economics department. If you opt to apply, please note, the Graduate School will not accept more than three applications from any individual during the course of his or her academic career.

Many students interested in an economics PhD experience disparate degrees of support in the application process. The Application Assistance and Mentoring Program (AAMP) aims to mitigate these gaps by helping students from underrepresented groups connect with a graduate student mentor in MIT or Harvard’s PhD economics programs. • Advice on graduate school and fellowship applications, including questions about the application process and feedback on application materials.

• Information about economics research, life as a PhD student or in an academic career, for students who are deciding whether a PhD in economics is the right choice for them.

The AAMP aims to increase the pipeline of diverse talent in economics PhD programs and welcomes participation from all groups underrepresented in economics, including but not limited to: Black, Hispanic-Latinx, Native American, low-income, and LGBTQ+ students, women, students with disabilities, and students who are the first in their families to go to college. The AAMP welcomes participation among students at various stages of their economics studies, including undergraduates and college graduates. The AAMP is open to students who are curious about the academic economics experience and interested in figuring out if it’s right for them.

Computer Science is an area of study within the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Prospective students apply through Harvard Griffin GSAS; in the online application, select “Engineering and Applied Sciences” as your program choice and select "PhD Computer Science" in the Area of Study menu.

In the Computer Science program, you will learn both the fundamentals of computation and computation’s interaction with the world. Your work will involve a wide range of areas including theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, economics and computer science, privacy and security, data-management systems, intelligent interfaces, operating systems, computer graphics, computational linguistics, robotics, networks, architectures, program languages, and visualization.

You will be involved with researchers in several interdisciplinary initiatives across the University, such as the Center for Research on Computation and Society, the Institute for Applied Computational Science, the Data Science Initiative, and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society.

Examples of projects current and past students have worked on include leveraging machine learning to solve real-world sequential decision-making problems and using artificial intelligence to help conservation and anti-poaching efforts around the world.

Graduates of the program have gone on to a range of careers in industry in companies like Riot Games as game director and Lead Scientist at Raytheon. Others have positions in academia at University of Pittsburgh, Columbia, and Stony Brook.

All students begin graduate study in the fall term only. 

What does the application require?

• Completed  application form  submitted by the appropriate application deadline (Dec.1st for masters applicants;  December 15th for Ph.D. applicants)
• Statement of Purpose: describe your future research interests, how they relate to your classroom and/or research experience, and which labs at SEAS you're most excited about.  Your statement should be no longer than 1,000 words.
• Personal Statement:Please share how your experiences or activities will advance our mission and commitment to sustain a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment  (full text of prompt can be found in the application).  No longer than 500 words.
• Three letters of recommendation submitted electronically
• Transcripts; please upload copies of all transcripts to the Academic Background section of the online application; unofficial copies are acceptable. 
• C.V. or Resume
• SEAS does not accept General GRE scores nor Subject Test GRE scores for applicants to our Ph.D. programs.  Applicants to these programs should not submit official or unofficial GRE scores to us nor mention them anywhere in their application materials.  
• SEAS does not accept General GRE scores nor Subject Test GRE scores for applicants to our masters degree programs in Computational Science & Engineering and Data Science.   Applicants to these programs should not submit official or unofficial GRE scores to us nor mention them anywhere in their application materials.  
• Either the GRE or GMAT is required for applicants applying to the Master of Design Engineering or the MS/MBA: Engineering Sciences programs.   The applications for these programs are available via the Graduate School of Design or Harvard Business School, respectively. 
• If required, an official  TOEFL  or  IELTS  score report. The school code to use to submit your TOEFL score is 3451.  *TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for applicants whose native language is other than English and who do not hold a Bachelor degree or its equivalent from an institution at which English is the language of instruction.  The score must be valid at the time of entry into the program.   Note that a masters degree from an English-speaking institution does not meet this requirement.   
• The application fee of $105.00. Should you want to request a fee waiver from Harvard Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, you may do so in the fee section of the application.

Please list only SEAS ladder faculty on the application.  "Affiliate faculty" cannot admit PhD students.  There are many SEAS ladder faculty with formal joint appointments in other Harvard Griffin GSAS departments, like Physics and Earth and Planetary Sciences.  These faculty can serve as primary research advisors to SEAS students.   A complete list of the SEAS ladder faculty can be found  here - filter for "primary graduate advisors" once you're on this page. 

We do not require an interview as part of the application process and we cannot offer applicants the opportunity for an in-person interview with the admissions staff.  Attending a Ph.D. or Masters Programs admissions information session is the best way to have your questions answered.   More information about our information sessions that will be held in the Fall can be found  here.

We require electronic submission of the entire application, including letters of recommendation and transcripts.  Please do not send us any hard copy materials.

Admissions Timeline for Ph.D., M.E., S.M., and A.B./S.M. Programs  (Note: The  Master in Design Engineering  and the  MS/MBA: Engineering Sciences  have different deadlines and timetables.) Governing Law

Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms of Use and/ or other policies available on this App, including any question regarding its existence, validity or termination, shall be referred to and finally resolved by arbitration administered by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC") in accordance with the Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC Rules") for the time being in force, which rules are deemed to be incorporated by reference in this clause. The Tribunal shall consist of 3 arbitrators. The seat and venue of Arbitration shall be Singapore and the language of proceedings shall be English. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if a dispute arises with respect to the validity, scope, enforceability, inventorship, ownership, infringement, breach or unauthorised use of any patent, trademark, copyright or other intellectual property right or any non-proprietary data owned and/or controlled by TC Global, whether or not arising from the Terms of Use, such dispute (at the option of TC Global) shall not be submitted to arbitration and instead, TC Global shall be free to initiate litigation, including but not limited to a claim for interim injunctive relief, in a court of competent jurisdiction, in any country or other jurisdiction in which such rights apply.

Integration and Severability

Fully-Funded PhD Program at Harvard University: How I Got In

Harvard is one of those places that people often talk about with admiration but rarely as an aspiration. “Could I ever get into Harvard?” is usually a question asked with a great deal of doubt and trepidation. However, thousands have graduated from Harvard over its lengthy and illustrious history, and those people are real people. They simply had two traits that made them eligible candidates, and the rest was up to chance! Those traits were: (a) an impressive portfolio (including high grades and varied and committed experiences, including leadership roles , etc.) and (b) confidence that they could indeed be accepted. This latter element is perhaps the defining feature of students accepted to Harvard—the belief that they could ever get in!

Harvard (or other Ivy schools) aren’t for everyone all the time

Let’s be clear: we are not all, always, ready to go to Harvard, just because we believe in ourselves. I applied to Harvard in high school and was rejected—and the truth is, though I was a committed and intellectually curious student, and though I feel I would have thrived at Harvard, I know I didn’t have the portfolio they needed. My grades were good, but not stellar ; my extracurriculars and summer experiences existed, but were not extensive or impressive; and, my confidence led me to seek very little advice or writing consulting for my personal statement , so that I did not submit my best possible work.

Thinking you can’t get in at one point in your life might be true, but it does not mean you are not “Harvard/Ivy League material” ever . After completing college at a marvelous liberal arts university (an experience I would choose again any day!), I knew my portfolio had changed. I had very good grades and had fostered deep and lasting connections with professors; I had been a research assistant, a student newspaper writer and editor, and a writing tutor; I had learned a tremendous amount and felt confident that I could submit a writing sample I was proud of.

This time, in addition to the necessary confidence and portfolio, I sought a writing tutor to help make sure my statement of purpose could be the best one possible, and off my application went! Lo and behold, I got into my dream school for an MA: the University of Chicago, or the “Harvard of the Midwest.” Not only that, but I unexpectedly was awarded a fully-funded fellowship , including full tuition coverage AND a stipend! You never know what can happen!

The importance of strong essays

During the last year of my MA, I again felt ready to submit applications to competitive schools; I’d kept up my grades and activities, I’d worked hard on a polished writing sample, and I made sure to consult with others about the quality of my statement of purpose; my years as a college writing tutor had taught me that we all need editors, from the least to most experienced writers. All of that, plus a big dose of luck, won me a place in a fully-funded PhD program at Harvard, where I am currently working on my dissertation (when I’m not advising Accepted’s clients ). So remember: confidence, a great portfolio, and assistance with one’s writing—these are the three things in your power; the rest is up to the big H!

I want to add one last thought: When applying to MA and PhD programs (as opposed to undergraduate programs), there is an additional key to a positive portfolio: demonstrating interest in the work of particular scholars with whom you’d like to work. This means two things:

• Tailoring your statement of purpose to each school and its specific faculty members,
• Reaching out directly to these scholars in order to express interest in their work. Ask to schedule a phone call and/or an in-person meeting. There’s no better way to make yourself stand out than to make yourself known in person.

Remember: if you don’t do this, you are an anonymous paper application swimming in a sea of similarly anonymous applications. If you were on the admissions end, wouldn’t you feel much better accepting a student you’ve had extensive contact with, have possibly even met, who made a good impression?

Your Ivy League checklist for admissions success

So, to sum up, here is your checklist for preparing to apply to Ivy League school PhD programs, including Harvard:

• Honestly assess your own transcript: Are you seeing that the vast majority of your grades are A and A-? Is your GPA at the end of college a 3.7 or above? If you’ve answered YES to both of these questions, you might be a good candidate.
• Consider your overall profile: What does it look like? (I’ll address how one constructs a great CV in another post.) Have you been involved in a sustained way (i.e., for a year or more) in multiple activities? Have you assumed leadership roles in some of these? Have you demonstrated commitments to these pursuits? If so, you might be a good candidate!
• Think long and hard about your recommenders : Have you built sustained relationships with your previous teachers/professors? If you apply for a graduate degree, make sure your recommenders are known figures in your field, who know you well and can write from personal experience teaching or supervising you. Their credibility will build confidence in your application.
• Have confidence! If you don’t believe you can get accepted, you very well might not. Confidence (to be clear, I do not mean arrogance!) shines through a good application.

Frequently asked questions about applying

Have my application materials been received (including common application forms, or supplemental materials).

Upon receipt of your application, we will send you a confirmation email with instructions on how to access the  Applicant Portal . This portal allows you to view your record in our applicant database, to see which pieces of your application we've received and processed, and to make other changes to your application.

The data is updated nightly from the main admissions database and has the most up-to-date information available from our office. If you have sent us required materials that are shown in your status as not received, it is possible that those documents are being processed (along with thousands of others) in our office and simply have not yet made it to your file. Though we can not track each individual's materials upon request, we will conduct a thorough scrutiny of all files prior to committee evaluations. You will be contacted if you are missing required documents, and you will be given the opportunity to re-submit them without penalty.

How can I add new accomplishments/awards/accolades to my submitted application?

We understand that you might receive new recognitions or awards after you’ve submitted your application. We welcome the submission of this additional notable information. You may upload information about notable accomplishments and awards using the Applicant Portal .

When do I need to submit test scores if I want them considered in my application?

If you are applying Restrictive Early Action, we would like your testing results by the end of October; however, you may submit the November series if needed.

For Regular Decision, although it is possible to submit scores from tests taken as late as the February, we recommend that you submit testing as early as possible.

Do I need to complete an alumni interview for my first-year application?

Applicants are assigned interviews at the discretion of the Admissions Committee, based, in part, on availability of alumni in your local area. Nearly 10,000 alumni/ae volunteers help us recruit students from all 50 states and around the world, but most areas do not have the capacity to interview all applicants. Your application is considered complete without an interview and will receive a full and thorough evaluation. In most cases, the Admissions Committee has sufficient information in the student’s application materials to reach an admissions decision. If the Committee would like more information about a student or has questions about any application materials, someone may reach out to schedule an interview.

Starting an Application

For all first-year and transfer applicants, your first step will be to fill out and submit an application. You can do so through the Common Application or the Coalition Application - Powered by Scoir. For first-year applicants, the Common Application opens on August 1 and the Coalition Application opens on August 15. For transfer applicants, both applications open on September 1. 

We have no preference and each application is treated equally by the Admissions Committee.

Harvard University Fees for Indian Students

The Scholarship Scheme of Harvard University offers a variety of opportunities for Indian students to study their favourite distinction. The university has created a separate committee of general scholarships that handles the distribution of financial aid to foreign students. With schemes like Harvard University Scholarships (Undergraduate) program, Indian students who belong to a poor family or whose family income is less than $65000 (₹48.25 Lakhs) are able to receive a fully-funded scholarship. This means they need not pay any fees for anything at Harvard University. In this way, many foreign students end up paying significantly less or receiving a full-paid scholarship for Harvard University. 

The following tuition and fee charges below have been in effect for the 2022-23 academic year and are subject to change slightly for future years. 

The university offers a plethora of courses for Harvard undergraduate international students , including approximately 89 undergraduate courses, of undergraduate courses out of which few popular programs at the institute primarily include Business Administration and Management , Psychology , Biological Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Architecture . Postgraduate education at Harvard costs slightly less than undergraduate classes, with the price standing at $49k per year. As a student, you must first apply and be accepted by a US university/college that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). After granting admission, you will receive a Form I-20 from the institution’s international student office, which is a paper record of your information in the database called the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Visa applicants, including students, are required to pay a non-refundable, non-transferable visa application fee, sometimes referred to as the MRV fee, before applying for a non-immigrant visa. Applicants participating in a US government-sponsored program (programs whose code begins with G-1, G-2, G-3, G-7) are not required to pay the SEVIS fee.

This variation of the net cost of attending Harvard University for an Indian student is even less when you consider scholarships and/or merits, and whether or not the student earns through part-time employment during their academic year. All these factors make it quite difficult to put a concrete number on your budget for attending Harvard. However, we can take some examples and of how much average cost a student spends at Harvard.

Accommodation may cost depending on where you live, and whether you’re on sharing basis or not. Here are some quick figures:

• $820-1100 (₹60k – ₹83k) per month per room for Harvard dormitories (based on the GSAS residence halls )
• $1700 to $2,600 (₹1.26 Lakh – ₹1.93 Lakh) per month for studio or IBHK in Harvard Housing
• $1150- 2000 (₹85k – ₹1.48 Lakh) per month for a studio apartment or a 1BHK somewhere within the campus, which is not owned by Harvard (sharing basis).
• $500-850 (₹37k – ₹63k) per person in a 3BHK or 4 BHK outside the campus on sharing basis.

Renting a Car in the USA

• Renting a car in the USA is the best option for long weekend plans.
• Many car rentals are more than happy to rent their cars to international students.
• The average cost of renting a car is $80 (₹6k) considering cheap car rentals.
• The cost might vary with the types of car rented.
• Make sure to have a valid driver’s license before renting a car to avoid any legal trouble.
• Taxis cannot be considered as an ideal choice since it is very expensive.
• It should be used only to travel long distances where there are no other modes of transport available.

Just like the rest of the living expenses, the average cost of utilities may go up to $13,940 (₹10.34 Lakhs) for a single academic year, depending on your lifestyle and choice of accommodation.  Following are the lists of utilities and daily/monthly essentials that are required:

• Books and stationery
• Transportation, etc.

Here are a few key highlights of why accepting financial aid is worth it for Harvard University:

• Attending Harvard costs upwards of $51,000 (₹37.86 Lakhs) in tuition fees for the 2022-2023 academic year.
• The school provides lucrative financial aid packages to many of its students through its large endowment funds.

• Students with a family income of more than $1.50 Lakhs (₹48.25 Lakhs) a year are expected to pay more than 10% but the exact amount differs from student to student based on their family income.  The financial aid provided by Harvard University helps hundreds of students to fulfill their desire of studying in the US.
• The scholarship amount is based on the family income of the students evidently the students with a family income of $65,000 (₹48.25 Lakhs) or less per year receive a fully-funded scholarship for undergraduate international students. It covers tuition, fees, room, and board. The students have to pay only for attendance.

Well, the simple answer is – because it’s Harvard!

There are many posts around this topic from a general perspective. Here we have tried to answer this question from an Indian applicant’s perspective.

With a thin acceptance rate of around 5%, not every student gets a chance to be at Harvard. Thousands of high school students apply to Harvard every year. Out of which those who are capable, qualified, and stand out are selected by the admission committee. The application process is influenced by your previous record, leadership potential, future goals, and what you have to offer to the Harvard community.

There is no accurate roadmap that guarantees your entry into Harvard but having a better perspective and knowledge can help you step up your chances of selection.

In this post, we will give you a perspective of both the application process (along with application requirements) and an overall view of how to get into Harvard.

Before moving on to the how-to part, let’s tackle some of the pre-application questions about Harvard College (University).

How to apply to Harvard University from India after 12th?

Here are Harvard University Admission Requirements for Indian Students.

Online Application:

The digital or online application is the first thing to submit. Once they formally receive your duly filled-in online application form, only then the admission committee will review other application materials like transcripts, test scores, essays, etc. Harvard accepts the  Common Application (Common App) , the  Universal College Application , and the  Coalition Application . You can apply to Harvard using any of those application portals. Read more about Harvard’s application requirements .

Application Fees: The online application has to be submitted with the application fee, which is $75. You can check the application fee on your school’s (department’s) website.

School Reports and Teacher Recommendations:

Midyear school report (grades from class 9 – 11).

When you apply, your school counselor will often send your transcript with few or no senior year course grades included. That is why the midyear school report is required – to allow the admission committee to review your performance in the first half of your Grade 11 coursework .  The midyear school report must be completed by your school counselor or other school officials.

Teacher Evaluations

Usually, you need to submit  2 letters of recommendation . If you wish to submit additional letters of recommendation, you can do so after you submit your application. In your application confirmation email, there will be a personalized link to send to your recommenders.

Final School Report and Transcripts

• All admitted students who choose to enroll are required to send a Final School Report and transcript as soon as their final grades (Class 12 results) become available – no later than July 1.
• The Final School Report and transcript should be completed and sent by a school counselor or other school official through Parchment/Docufide or Scrip-Safe International if your school has access to these submission options.
• IB students should send their final results as soon as they are released in mid-July. We will expect to see final A levels results by mid-August.

Standardized Test Scores:

• Harvard College requires standardized test scores from either the SAT or ACT (with or without writing). They even recommend submitting two SAT subject tests, neither of which may be the SAT II English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT).
• All international students, including Indians, are required to take the standardized English language tests, especially if their native language is English. In India, even if you’re raised as bilingual or went to an English-medium school,  you still need to submit your TOEFL score . Some Harvard schools also require a  minimum TOEFL score  from all applicants. So make sure to check that while preparing to take the test.

Supplemental Materials:

Personal statement / essays –.

This is one of the most important components of Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students. Or any student for that matter. Your essay should describe your experience, ambition, and why you’re applying to the particular program. It should basically identify why you’re the perfect candidate to be admitted, and how it will help you with your long-term passion or goal.

Resume –

Not all Harvard grad schools require applicants to submit a resume. For example, Harvard Business School requires applicants to submit a business resume. Mostly, graduate schools that prefer work experience may require resumes. It may even be optional, so check on your school’s website admission requirements to cross-check.

Portfolio –

Certain schools like Harvard Graduate School of Design require applicants of certain degree programs to submit a design portfolio. For these schools, the portfolio is one of the most important Harvard University admission requirements. The portfolio requires you to visually represent  your scholarly, academic and/or professional work .

Additional/Supporting Materials –

At the discretion of the Admissions Committee, supplementary materials—such as music recordings, artwork, or selected samples of academic work—may be evaluated by faculty. These materials are entirely optional.

• Not all Harvard schools recommend interviews as a part of the admission process. So this is something that you want to check on the school’s admission page. Sometimes, the school you applied to may also inform applicants via telephone/Skype/Zoom that an interview is necessary to finally judge their application.

How to Get into Harvard Medical School after 12th

Harvard does not have quotas or limits based on either citizenship or the location of high school. Additionally, Harvard follows a need-blind admission policy . It means admissions decisions are made without regard to whether an applicant has applied for financial aid, even if the applicant is a foreign citizen.

How to Get into Harvard from India (for Undergrad)

Maintain a high gpa (grades).

US universities follow the approach of holistic profile evaluation. Though near-perfect grades won’t guarantee you a Harvard admit, having excellent grades will keep you in the running for admissions to the college.

Most Harvard applicants fall within the top 10-15% of their class, so you should aim to be within this range to be seriously considered. If your GPA is well below this range, the other parts of your application will have to be incredibly impressive to make up for it.

• Try to take honors/AP courses; if they are being provided by your school
• Opt for the most challenging course load you can handle as the rigor of course matters a lot
• You should demonstrate excellence in  all  of your academic subjects. Though you can be stronger in some subjects and weaker than others, you should be an exceptional student in almost every class.
• Don’t be discouraged if your GPA isn’t  quite  as high as you wanted it to be. If your grades have improved from your freshman year until the time you apply, officers will be impressed, and if there was a dip in your grades because of a personal situation, you can explain it in your essay.

Get High Scores in SAT/ACT, SAT Subject Tests, and AP Exams

Doing extremely well on your  SAT or ACT and AP exams will show admissions officers that you are a hard worker with stellar academic achievements. Just like having a perfect GPA won’t make you a shoo-in, a high SAT score and strong AP test results won’t guarantee you a spot in Harvard, but it will keep admissions officers interested in your application.

• Don’t be worried if your school doesn’t offer a ton of AP tests. Not every school offers 20 different AP tests, and the admissions officers will know if your high school does not. Just try to do well on the tests that your school does offer. Another option could be to take AP courses online.
• Make sure to take your tests at the right time. If you want to impress Harvard with your SAT score, you’ll have to take it well before the application is due. Take the test during your junior year to give yourself enough time to retake it if it’s necessary.
• Check Harvard’s requirements for the last possible test date for the ACT or SAT. It’s always just a week or a few weeks after the application due date, but you should already have an excellent score when you apply.
• Harvard also requires you to take two SAT II tests.
• Don’t forget to have your score reports sent directly to the Harvard admissions office.

Demonstrate a Positive Attitude towards Learning through Coursework

Depending on your intended area of major, try out the following:

• If you are interested in STEM, participate in relevant research projects, clubs, and summer school programs .
• India is a STEM-crazy nation. So, I am sure, a lot of folks would be interested to know how to get admission to Harvard University from India after 12th for engineering. If you want to be an engineer, better to have rigorous coursework in Math, Physics, etc., and you better be holding good grades in high school or improving them over time.
• Get an internship at a place that relates to your interests.
• If you like biological science, try to get work in a lab.
• Get a job and work hard. Admissions are often impressed at students who take the initiative to pay their own way into college rather than relying on their parents to cover the exorbitant costs.

Pursue Impressive Extracurricular Activities

Demonstrate excellence through your participation in a club, activity or sports that you are interested in.  

• Though your grades and scores will prove that you are capable of academic excellence, your extracurricular activities will make you stand out as a unique individual who is invested in pursuing his interests.
• You don’t need to participate in 10-15 different activities and sports. Finding two or three clubs you’re interested in and making an effort to excel in those areas and even reaching a leadership role will show that you are a dedicated, well-rounded individual.
• Harvard will not care how many things you participate in. Rather they want to see excellence and deep dedication in one or two fields you are passionate about. It’s all about quality over quantity.
• Some people who excel at a certain subject, also compete in various competitions. Interested in science? Try out for competitions like Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl, or others available in your school. Harvard wants students that stand out, so having a few competitions under your belt, even with participation, is a good boost for anyone.

Focus on Leadership

Become a leader. Harvard is always looking for future leaders and brand ambassadors for their college. Here are a few tips to demonstrate your leadership skills:

• It’s okay if you are not the President or Secretary. In most clubs, you’ll have to work your way up from a smaller leadership role to the head role.
• The admission committee doesn’t expect you to solve the Middle-East crisis or global pandemic issue. Even you can demonstrate a passion for solving key problems in your local neighborhood or community, that’s good enough.
• If you like politics or debating, join the Model United Nations team or debate team. If you love languages, join the French or Spanish club.
• Start your commitment as early as Grade 8 or 9. You should join clubs and other activities early on so you can show a record of dedication and commitment.

Demonstrate Spike in Sports or Band

Similarly, try to be be good (or great) at one or two sports or stand out by joining a band.

• You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, national/state-level player, or a world-class musician to get into Harvard. Participating in a sport or joining the school band will make you stand out.
• Though clubs can be time-consuming, taking a sport or playing an instrument requires you to practice or compete almost every day after school so it shows a deep level of dedication.
• If you join a sport, try to work up to a leadership position. Remember that you don’t often have to be the best athlete to be the team captain. You have to be the most dedicated or most well-liked.
• Remember that while many sports require ten or more hours of commitment a week, you can also do a sport for just one or two of the three sports seasons. For example, you can run cross country in the fall, but take the winter off to focus on your studies and clubs, and then run spring track the next season.
• If you play an instrument, you should also strive to gain a leadership position in your team’s band. Quite a few colleges look at musical excellence.

Involve in Community Work and Make Social Impact

Volunteering in your community is a great way to show your generosity, empathy, and your kindness. It is also a great way to impress admissions officers. There are countless ways to volunteer in your community, whether you’re doing it through your school’s Key Club, or finding opportunities through your local youth center or nearby charities. Here are some great things to do:

• Volunteer to help children learn to read in your local library.
• Work with an NGO to solve social issues.
• Teach underprivileged children in your local community
• Spend time in old age or veteran’s home in your area.
• Volunteer in a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen.
• Take the initiative to clean up your local park.

Provide Personalized Recommendations

After your coursework, letters of recommendation (LORs) play a very important component in your application. But note that generic LORs do not help as every application with a LOR has it. Get the LOR from teachers or others who know you well and can speak more closely about your values, performance, and who you are as a person.

Harvard requires you to submit two teacher evaluations to give more insight into your performance in the classroom. Pick two teachers who know you well and have a unique perspective on your strengths in your classroom and your character.

• A teacher can describe your excellence in his or her classroom, as well as your contributions to the class discussion.
• Choose a teacher who has really seen you at your academic best. If your teacher is also your athletic coach or club leader, s/he can add even more dimension to the recommendation.
• Pick two teachers from two different subjects. Otherwise, it may look like you only excel in one subject.
• Approach someone who you know will write a knockout recommendation. Ask older students if they recommend a certain teacher, or if there’s a teacher who has a reputation of being late with the recommendations or not writing anything too specific.
• You should not only pick a teacher or person who has a close connection to you but someone who you know will write something detailed and positive.

Tell a Compelling Story through the Essays

Most of the colleges want to know more about the student before admitting them. They use LORs to get to know you from others, but  college essays  are a great way for them to know more about “You”, your aspirations, your dreams, your values, and what has shaped you to become what or who you are today.

Your essay should do two main things: it should show the admissions officers what an original, interesting, and driven person you are, and that you have top-notch writing skills.

You should take the time to write an essay that is meaningful to you and leave enough time for yourself to proofread it when you’re finished. You can find the guidelines for the essay on the last page of the application. It should be 250-500 words long. Here are a few tips:

• Be original. Write something that only you could write. Show what makes you special.
• Show your strong character. Tell a story that demonstrates your persistence, work ethic, creativity, or even your ability to learn from your mistakes.
• Be compelling. Hook the admissions officers from your opening line, and keep their interests with your lively language, varied sentences, and engaging topic.
• Be concise. Don’t go over the word limit. Admissions officers will be reading thousands of essays, and they won’t appreciate it if you can’t follow directions.
• Some popular admissions essay topics include writing about your achievements in a club or a sport, describing your family and background, or writing about a life-changing experience.
• Get feedback. Run your essay by a trusted friend or family member and your English teacher, if you can. They can help you catch grammar mistakes, and they can also tell whether your essay had its intended effect.
• Always proofread your work. When you’re done, check your essay for grammar and punctuation mistakes. Remember that admissions officers aren’t just interested in the content of your essay, but also in how well you can write.

S hruthi Kumar, an Indian-American student at Harvard , criticised her alma mater for its response to pro-Palestine protests during her commencement ceremony speech on the university campus. Kumar, one of the three students who won the honour to speak at the graduation, veered off from her prepared speech titled “The Power of Not Knowing”.

Kumar pulled out a piece of paper from her gown and addressed the intolerance of freedom of speech and civil disobedience on campus. She highlighted the plight of 13 undergraduates from the class of 2024 who were not allowed to graduate due to their involvement in the Gaza protests.

“The students had spoken. The faculty had spoken. Harvard, do you hear us?” she said.

After her speech, students staged a walkout in support of the 13 students barred from graduating for their protests against the war in Gaza.

“As I stand before you today, I must take a moment to recognise my peers, the 13 undergraduates… in the class of 2024 who will not graduate today. I am deeply disappointed by the intolerance of freedom of speech and the right to civil disobedience on campus. What is happening on campus is about liberty,” said Kumar.

“The students had spoken. The faculty had spoken. Harvard, do you hear us?” she stressed.

The Indian-origin student went on to say, “Now, we are in a moment of intense division and disagreement in our community over the events in Gaza. I see pain, uncertainty, and unrest across campus. It’s now, in a moment like this, that the power of ‘not knowing’ becomes critical.”

“Maybe we don’t know what it’s like to be ethnically targeted. Maybe we don’t know what it’s like to come face to face with violence and death. But we don’t have to know,” she added.

She further expressed, “Solidarity is not dependent on what we know because ‘not knowing’ is an ethical stance. It creates space for empathy, solidarity, and a willingness to listen.”

“I don’t know - so I ask. I listen. I believe an important type of learning takes place, especially in moments of uncertainty, when we lean into conversation without assuming we have all the answers. Can we see humanity in people we don’t know? Can we feel the pain of people with whom we disagree?” Kumar concluded.

Harvard Corporation Rejects FAS Effort to Let 13 Pro-Palestine Student Protesters Graduate

The Harvard Corporation rejected an effort by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to confer degrees on 13 seniors facing disciplinary charges for participating in the pro-Palestine encampment, an unprecedented veto that opens a new front in the internal battles that have convulsed Harvard for the past year.

The Corporation, the University’s highest governing body, deliberated late into the night on Tuesday as it stared down an impossible decision : render Harvard College’s disciplinary processes toothless by approving the FAS-amended list or undercut the authority of the University’s largest faculty by declining to uphold their amendment.

“Today, we have voted to confer 1,539 degrees to Harvard College students in good standing,” the Corporation wrote in a joint statement on Wednesday. “Because the students included as the result of Monday’s amendment are not in good standing, we cannot responsibly vote to award them degrees at this time.”

Faculty members, at the annual FAS degree meeting, plunged Harvard into something of a constitutional crisis as they voted to amend the list of degrees for conferral at Commencement during what is normally a sparsely attended pro forma session.

Instead, 115 faculty members showed up to a meeting in which a decisive majority voted to confer degrees on the 13 seniors. The students were notified of disciplinary charges from the Harvard College Administrative Board just three days earlier.

During the meeting, faculty members claimed that it had the authority to add the students back onto the list because the disciplinary actions from the Ad Board were subject to approval by the FAS — the “ultimate disciplinary body” for the College, according to the University’s governing statutes.

Whether it intended to or not, the Corporation’s statement signaled that it does not believe the FAS has the authority that some of its faculty members think it does.

This now pits many faculty members against the Corporation at a time when many stakeholders across the University have raised serious questions about the Corporation’s stewardship, accusing the board of repeated leadership failures over the past eight months.

Government professor Steven Levitsky warned in an interview on Tuesday that the Corporation could spark a faculty uprising if it does not sign off on the FAS-approved list of degrees for conferral.

“I would expect a faculty rebellion, possibly a faculty rebellion against the entire governance structure, because there’s already a fair amount of mistrust toward the Corporation to begin with,” Levitsky said.

The Corporation cited rules outlined in the Student Handbook which state that students must be in good standing in order to graduate and noted that the FAS vote on Monday only added students to the list of degrees for conferral — and did not actually overturn the disciplinary charges.

“We respect each faculty’s responsibility to determine appropriate discipline for its students,” the Corporation wrote. “Monday’s faculty vote did not, however, revisit these disciplinary rulings, did not purport to engage in the individualized assessment of each case that would ordinarily be required to do so, and, most importantly, did not claim to restore the students to good standing.”

The Corporation also wrote that siding with the FAS motion could create a double standard and disadvantage students who were not in good academic standing for issues unrelated to pro-Palestine protests on campus.

“We also considered the inequity of exempting a particular group of students who are not in good standing from established rules, while other seniors with similar status for matters unrelated to Monday’s faculty amendment would be unable to graduate,” the Corporation wrote.

The current controversy stems from the Harvard College Administrative Board’s decision on Friday to suspend five students and place more than 2o others on probation for their participation in the encampment that ended earlier this month.

The disciplinary charges were met with almost immediate condemnation from a range of students and faculty members across the University, who described the charges as an arbitrary and uncharacteristically harsh crackdown on student activism.

Many critics alleged that the disciplinary charges violated an agreement to end the encampment between interim Harvard President Alan M. Garber ’76 and the pro-Palestine student protesters.

Garber wrote in an email to encampment protesters that he would ask schools to reinstate students from involuntary leave and “encourage the administrative boards or other disciplinary bodies within the schools to address cases expeditiously under existing precedent and practice (including taking into account where relevant the voluntary decision to leave the encampment), for all students, including those students eligible thereafter to graduate so that they may do so.”

While the faculty attempted to take matters into their own hands by reinstating students, the Corporation insisted on Wednesday that the Ad Board’s appeal processes must first run their course.

“We fully support the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ stated intention to provide expedited review, at this time, of eligible requests for reconsideration or appeal,” the Corporation wrote. “We will consider conferral of degrees promptly if, following the completion of all FAS processes, a student becomes eligible to receive a degree.”

Harvard Corporation Rules Thirteen Students Cannot Graduate

Faculty of arts and sciences may 20 vote on protestors’ status does not confer “good standing.”.

On Monday, during the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ meeting on students’ eligibility to receive their degrees, members voted that 13 students found by the College’s Administrative Board to have violated University policies during their pro-Palestinian encampment in Harvard Yard should be included on the list of those eligible [ Corrected 4:58 p.m. : a previous version of this story incorrectly said the faculty voted that those students were in “good standing”]. That meant that the faculty voted the students should receive their degrees at the 373 rd Commencement tomorrow—an action, overruling the Administrative Board, that transferred the final decision to the Harvard Corporation. The President and Fellows (the Corporation) are ultimately responsible for conferring degrees.

The Administrative Board ruling spurred new protests by the students’ supporters, including a weekend march to interim president Alan M. Garber’s home, and furious, dueling editorials and op-eds in the Crimson . Advocates of the students cite prior protest encampments, in which the University did not impose similar discipline; their critics cite the violation of Harvard rules on protests, and reports of harassing or intimidating behavior toward others during the encampment.

In a statement released this afternoon, the Corporation said that since the students are not in good standing, they therefore will not receive their degrees at Commencement. That may further fuel possible attempts during the morning exercises to protest both the Israel-Gaza war itself and the University’s response to the encampment and other campus actions. The Corporation’s statement follows:

In accordance with the University statutes, the President and Fellows of Harvard College are responsible for conferring degrees on students who have fulfilled degree requirements and are in good standing.

Degree candidates are recommended to the President and Fellows, collectively known as the Harvard Corporation, by the faculties at Harvard’s schools. On Monday, faculty members who attended a Faculty of Arts and Sciences meeting amended the list of candidates provided by the FAS Registrar, who certifies that students have met the requirements and are in good standing. The faculty amendment added to the list of recommended Harvard College degree recipients thirteen students who are not in good standing.

Each of these students has been found by the College’s Administrative Board — the body established by the FAS faculty to investigate and adjudicate disciplinary matters—to have violated the University’s policies by their conduct during their participation in the recent encampment in Harvard Yard. We respect each faculty’s responsibility to determine appropriate discipline for its students. Monday’s faculty vote did not, however, revisit these disciplinary rulings, did not purport to engage in the individualized assessment of each case that would ordinarily be required to do so, and, most importantly, did not claim to restore the students to good standing.

Today, we have voted to confer 7,782 degrees to students in good standing. Because the students included as the result of Monday’s amendment are not in good standing, we cannot responsibly vote to award them degrees at this time. In coming to this determination, we note that the express provisions of the Harvard College Student Handbook state that students who are not in good standing are not eligible for degrees. We also considered the inequity of exempting a particular group of students who are not in good standing from established rules, while other seniors with similar status for matters unrelated to Monday’s faculty amendment would be unable to graduate.

We understand that the inability to graduate is consequential for students and their families. We fully support the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ stated intention to provide expedited review, at this time, of eligible requests for reconsideration or appeal. We will consider conferral of degrees promptly if, following the completion of all FAS processes, a student becomes eligible to receive a degree.

We care deeply about every member of our community—students, faculty, staff, researchers, and alumni—and we have chosen a path forward that accords with our responsibilities and reaffirms a process for our students to receive prompt and fair review.

A Harvard University student speaker put the institution on blast Thursday morning when she dramatically went off script during her commencement address to slam the school for punishing more than a dozen of her peers for their activism.

Shruthi Kumar, the Harvard senior chosen to deliver the English address, sharply reprimanded the university leaders during her time at the podium. During her speech—which was titled “The Power of Not Knowing”—Kumar drew out a piece of paper containing off-script remarks hidden up the sleeve of her crimson gown.

“As I stand here today, I must take a moment to recognize my peers—the 13 undergraduates in the class of 2024 that will not graduate today,” Kumar told the crowd. She was referring to the 13 students who had been denied the opportunity to walk at commencement over the sanctions they’d received for participating in campus pro-Palestinian protests .

“I am deeply disappointed by the intolerance for freedom of speech and their right to civil disobedience on campus,” she continued. “The students have spoken. The faculty have spoken. Harvard, do you hear us?”

“Harvard, do you hear us?” she repeated.

In response, Kumar received a standing ovation from the crowd, including some of the faculty. The rest of her remarks covered the war in Gaza , the experience of being doxxed for her views, and what she characterized as attacks on free speech and free expression.

Kumar’s fiery indictment of her school was the latest in a wave of protests at Harvard’s commencement ceremonies, sparked by its highest governing body’s decision to deny a faculty-led action that would allow 13 students who participated in pro-Palestinian protests to walk at their commencement ceremony.

On Thursday morning, several protesters silently held up a banner calling attention to the suffering in Gaza and rallied in support of their peers who had been prevented from receiving their degrees. Meanwhile, pro-Israel counterprotesters flew planes high in the sky, trailing U.S. and Israeli flags and a slogan that read, “Jewish Lives Matter.US.”

Kumar was one of three students who won the honor to speak at graduation through an annual contest hosted by the university. In a Harvard Gazette feature on her and the other winners, Kumar previewed a very different message that was more anchored in the personal than the political: She spoke of embracing change in the context of her own decision to switch from a pre-med career track to a path in public health.

“At the end of the day, I think we owe it to ourselves to listen to that voice inside that tells us, ‘Oh, this is what I’m passionate about,’” Kumar said then.

But Kumar is also an accomplished yogi who focuses on mental health practice and mindfulness. Ahead of her speech, with its message to embrace the chaos, she told the Harvard Gazette that her remarks would be about the “conscious shift you must make” to adapt in times of uncertainty.

“We are all people walking through the world, not really knowing what’s going to happen,” she said. “But the power of not knowing is about how you can turn that space of fear and anxiety into something that is empowering, uplifting, and exciting.”

In off-roading at commencement, Kumar apparently excelled at taking her own advice.

Harvard University’s governing board pulls degrees for 13 pro-Palestinian student protestors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Thirteen students who participated in the three-week-long pro-Palestine encampment in Harvard Yard will not receive their diplomas alongside their classmates after Harvard University’s governing body rejected a motion that would allow them to graduate.

The Harvard Corporation, the university’s governing body, said Wednesday the 13 students will be able to participate in the ceremony but will not receive their degrees, citing the Harvard College handbook.

“Today, we have voted to confer 1,539 degrees to Harvard College students in good standing. Because the students included as the result of Monday’s amendment are not in good standing, we cannot responsibly vote to award them degrees at this time,” the Harvard Corporation stated on the school’s website.

The announcement came two days after Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences voted to allow the 13 students currently suspended or on probation their degrees.

According to the Boston Globe, 115 faculty members gathered for the vote to approve the list of graduating seniors, adding an amendment for the 13 students not in good standing.

“Each of these students has been found by the College’s Administrative Board—the body established by the FAS faculty to investigate and adjudicate disciplinary matters—to have violated the University’s policies by their conduct during their participation in the recent encampment in Harvard Yard,” the statement from the Presidents and Fellows of Harvard reads. “We respect each faculty’s responsibility to determine appropriate discipline for its students. Monday’s faculty vote did not, however, revisit these disciplinary rulings, did not purport to engage in the individualized assessment of each case that would ordinarily be required to do so, and, most importantly, did not claim to restore the students to good standing.”

On Sunday, anti-Israel protesters marched from Harvard to the home of interim president Alan Garber for the second time. They are upset that students who participated in the three-week-long encampment are being disciplined.

Harvard’s Administrative Board had previously suspended 5 students, placed 20 on probation and blocked 14 seniors from receiving degrees

“We understand that the inability to graduate is consequential for students and their families,” the governing board said. “We fully support the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ stated intention to provide expedited review, at this time, of eligible requests for reconsideration or appeal. We will consider conferral of degrees promptly if, following the completion of all FAS processes, a student becomes eligible to receive a degree.”

Harvard’s graduation will take place Thursday morning.
