What is diwali.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant festivals in Indian culture. It’s a Hindu festival, but also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. Known as the “Festival of Lights,” it symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.”

Diwali is a five-day festival that usually takes place between mid-October and mid-November, depending on the lunar calendar. Each day of Diwali has its own associated traditions, but the festival is most famous for the millions of lights— in the form of oil lamps, candles, and fireworks— that are lit on the night of the new moon to create a spectacular display.

The specific narratives and traditions associated with Diwali can vary greatly depending on regional and cultural differences. Some celebrate it in honor of the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana from exile, as told in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Others associate it with the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi.

Traditions often include cleaning and decorating homes, lighting lamps and candles inside and outside of homes, exchanging gifts, feasting on sweets and snacks, and gathering with family and community members. It’s a time for renewal and rejoicing.

Where is it Celebrated?

India – As the country with the largest Hindu population, Diwali is widely celebrated across all regions of India, although customs and traditions can vary significantly between different areas.

Nepal – Known as Tihar or Swanti, it is a significant festival in Nepal and shares many similarities with Diwali celebrations in India.

Sri Lanka – This country has a significant Hindu Tamil population who celebrate Diwali.

Malaysia – Diwali is a public holiday in Malaysia and is celebrated by the country’s significant Indian population.

Singapore – Diwali is a public holiday in Singapore, which has a sizeable Indian-origin population.

Fiji – With a significant Indo-Fijian population, Diwali is an important festival and a public holiday in Fiji.

Mauritius – With a majority Hindu population, Diwali is a major festival in Mauritius.

Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname – These countries have significant populations of Indo-Caribbean people, and Diwali is a public holiday there.

Pakistan and Bangladesh – While these countries are predominantly Muslim, their Hindu and Sikh minorities do observe Diwali.

In recent years, Diwali has been celebrated in an increasing number of locations around the world, and it has gained a significant presence in multicultural celebrations in countries with large Indian diaspora populations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.

english diwali homework

What do you know about Diwali? It's one of the biggest events in the Indian calendar. And that means big celebrations in multicultural cities in Britain, too. Find out all about the festival and how it is celebrated in Britain.

Instructions

Do the preparation task first. Then read the article and do the exercises to check your understanding.

Preparation

An indian festival.

Did you know that Diwali is one of the biggest events in the Indian calendar? It is celebrated around the world by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. In London, Birmingham, Belfast, Edinburgh, Leicester and other multicultural cities in Britain, British Asians celebrate Diwali. Celebrations include firework displays, Diwali lanterns, music, dancing, plays, as well as delicious traditional Indian food and sweets.

What does Diwali mean?

Diwali (or Deepavali) is also known as the Festival of Light. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit language and means 'row of lamps'. In South Asia, homes, shops and streets are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas. During Diwali, patterns, called rangoli, are drawn on floors. The lotus flower is one of the most popular patterns to draw. Diwali is celebrated every year on the darkest night of the month in October or November. The exact date changes every year to coincide with the new moon. With the new moon Diwali marks a new beginning and for many people it symbolises joy, love, reflection, resolution, forgiveness, light and knowledge. Diwali is traditionally a time for cleaning your home, decorating your house with lights and candles, wearing new clothes, painting henna tattoos on hands, giving presents, and getting together with family and friends.

London and Leicester

If you have ever visited London, the capital of England, you will know that it is a truly multicultural city where people of different ethnic groups and religions live, work, study and go to school. Depending on the time of year you can join in with celebrations for Christmas, Eid or Diwali in London’s Trafalgar Square. Diwali is celebrated every year in this world-famous square with Bhangra dancing around the fountains, vegetarian food sold at stalls, and free performances of South Asian contemporary and classical music and dance.

Leicester, in the north of England, has one of the most important Diwali celebrations outside of India. The Festival of Light in Leicester starts with a display of thousands of lights along Belgrave Road, also known as ‘The Golden Mile’. There is Bollywood singing and dancing. You can go late-night shopping and restaurants stay open late too. All this is followed by spectacular fireworks. Tourists, visitors and local residents are all welcome to enjoy the fun! Leicester’s Asian community say that this is the best (as well as the biggest!) Diwali celebration outside of India.

#HappyDiwali

Is Diwali all about tradition? These days many people in the UK celebrate the Festival of Light with electric fairy lights instead of old-fashioned oil lamps. Instead of traditional gold and silver gifts, it is common to give money to put towards electronic gifts or iTunes credits. Shopping has changed too. Now many people buy their Diwali presents online rather than visiting a shop. Family and friends can communicate easily via social media and #HappyDiwali tweets spread the message of hope and light around the world.

Happy Diwali!

What do you know about Diwali? Read this article to find out what people do at this special time of year.

Do the preparation exercise first. Then read the article and do the other exercises.

Preparation

Diwali is one of the most popular festivals in India. It is celebrated by millions of people not just in India but in many other countries across the world.

When is Diwali?

The date of Diwali changes every year, because the Hindu calendar depends on the position of the moon. In the Western calendar, it's usually sometime in October or November. Diwali lasts for five days, but the main celebration is on the third day. This is the darkest night of the month in the Indian calendar.

The meaning of Diwali

Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights. In the very old Indian language, Sanskrit, Diwali (or Deepavali ) means 'row of lamps'. People light lamps at Diwali to show that light is more powerful than darkness, and good is more powerful than evil. Diwali also celebrates new beginnings.

Preparing for Diwali

To prepare for this very special festival, people often clean and decorate their homes. They go shopping for food and new clothes for Diwali. It's also an important time of year for buying gold and silver.

Rangoli are colourful patterns that people make on the floor out of coloured powder, rice and flowers. Some of the most popular patterns to make are flowers. People make rangoli to welcome the gods into their homes and to bring good luck.

Diyas and fireworks

People often decorate their homes with small lamps called diyas . They light lamps and leave the windows open so that the Indian goddess, Lakshmi, will enter their home and bring good luck. They often watch big, colourful firework displays and also enjoy shows of music and dancing.

A time for families

At Diwali, people spend time with their family and friends. They pray to the goddess Lakshmi to bring peace and good fortune to their homes.  They wear their best clothes, give and receive presents, and eat delicious food and sweets together.

Diwali has a different meaning for different religions, and their Diwali stories are different. But for everyone, Diwali is a time for good and happy things, and it's a beautiful, colourful festival of lights. Happy Diwali!

Are there Diwali celebrations where you live? Do you watch fireworks at a different time of year? Tell us about it!

What is Diwali?

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most important festivals in India. It's the Festival of Lights, and people celebrate it with immense joy and enthusiasm. Imagine the night sky illuminated by thousands of twinkling candles and colorful lights - that's Diwali for you!

When is Diwali 2023?

Diwali doesn't have a fixed date; it's like the cool kid who changes schools every year. But don't worry! In 2023, Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12th - Tuesday 14th November. It usually falls between October and November, so keep an eye on your calendar.

The Story Behind Diwali

Now, let's dial back to the origin of the story. Diwali has a fascinating tale that makes it even more exciting! It's the celebration of the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his loyal brother Lakshmana from their 14-year exile. People lit oil lamps, or diyas, to guide them home. Isn't that sweet?

Picture this: a kingdom shrouded in darkness, ruled by a fierce demon king named Ravana. But there's a glimmer of hope - Lord Rama, a prince who's not just a skilled archer but also a symbol of truth and virtue. Lord Rama was exiled for 14 long years, along with his devoted wife Sita and his loyal brother Lakshmana.

Their journey through the forests was filled with adventures and challenges. They encountered mystical creatures, and brave allies, and faced countless trials. But through it all, Lord Rama remained steadfast in his righteousness, upholding the values of honor and duty.

The turning point in this epic tale came when Sita was kidnapped by the demon king, Ravana, who lured her away from the protective circle drawn by Lakshmana. A mighty battle ensued, and Lord Rama, with the help of an army of monkeys and an epic bridge (yes, you heard that right, a bridge built by monkeys!), defeated Ravana and rescued Sita.

Now, here's where the magic of Diwali comes in. After their long and challenging exile, Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana finally returned to their kingdom, Ayodhya. The people of Ayodhya were overjoyed at the news of their return and wanted to celebrate this triumphant homecoming grandly.

To honor the return of their beloved prince and to light up his path, the people of Ayodhya lit oil lamps, or diyas, all around the kingdom. These lamps not only illuminated the city but also symbolised the victory of light over darkness, truth over falsehood, and

good over evil. The entire kingdom glowed with a warm, welcoming light.

How to Celebrate Diwali?

The Light Show: Diwali is all about spreading light and happiness. Families decorate their homes with oil lamps, candles, and colorful lights. It's like a giant, sparkly Christmas tree, but with a lot more colors.

Sweets Galore: Diwali is a sweet tooth's dream come true. Families exchange sweets and goodies, and there's even a friendly competition to see who can make the tastiest treats. Yum!

Firecrackers: While it's fun to watch fireworks light up the sky, it's important to remember that not everyone enjoys them. Some people, animals, and our environment can get a bit spooked. So, let's be mindful and enjoy the dazzling lights without the loud noises.

Diwali Puja: Families gather to perform special prayers and ceremonies during Diwali. It's a time for reflection and gratitude.
