With Interpol withdrawing the Red Corner Notice (RCN) against fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi, the spotlight is back on people who fled India to escape the law. One such fugitive is the controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik.

Naik recently made headlines after some reports, in November 2022, suggested that Qatar had extended an invitation to him to attend the FIFA World Cup. However, the country denied the claims and said no such invitation had been sent to Naik.

Who is Zakir Naik, why is he in Malaysia, and what charges does he face in India? We explain.

Who is Zakir Naik?

Zakir Abdul Karim Naik, 57, is a fundamentalist Islamic preacher who fled India in 2016 amid charges of spreading hatred and money laundering. When confronted with allegations of hate speech, Naik has consistently maintained that his statements are “twisted” and “misrepresented”. His speeches are broadcast on the channel Peace TV, which is banned in India, Canada, the UK, and Bangladesh. His trademark dress is the ‘modern’ western suit and a skullcap.

Naik was born in Mumbai and finished his education, including an MBBS degree, in the city. He got involved in socio-religious activities in his 20s and eventually founded the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), now banned in India.

Festive offer

He gained international attention when one of the accused in the 2016 Dhaka cafe attack, which killed 22 people, said he was inspired by Naik’s speeches.

The same year, India’s counterterrorism agency filed a complaint against Naik, accusing him of promoting religious hatred and other unlawful activities. On November 17, 2016, the IRF was declared an unlawful organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967) by the Centre.

When the ban was extended for another five years in November 2021, the Union Home ministry, in a notification, said the IRF has been indulging in activities prejudicial to the security of the country and had the potential of disturbing peace and communal harmony.

About Naik, the notification said he has been “encouraging and aiding followers to promote or attempt to promote, on grounds of religion, disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious communities and groups which are prejudicial to the integrity and security of the country.”

Flight to Malaysia

In 2017, Naik sought asylum in Malaysia, where he is now a permanent resident. While India has been trying to extradite him, not much progress has been made in this regard. Interpol has refused to issue a Red Notice for Naik.

In 2019, Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said his country had the right to not extradite Naik if he “would not be accorded justice” in India.

The same year, the preacher was banned from speaking in public in Malaysia, after he allegedly made racial remarks against the country’s ethnic Hindus and Chinese communities. Naik later apologised for these remarks. Mahathir then said Naik was trying to “stir up religious feelings”.

In 2020, Naik claimed the Indian government had offered him safe passage into the country if he spoke in favour of the abrogation of Article 370.

History and Background

Naik studied at St Peter's High School and Kishinchand Chellaram College. Later, he received a bachelor's degree in medicine at the Karnataka Lingayat Education Society's J. N. Medical College, Belgaum, Karnataka. He heads the Islamic Research Foundation, based in Mumbai. He is also the chairman of the IRF Educational Trust, and the president of Islamic Dimensions. Naik is the founder of the Islamic International School.

Naik claims to offer a rational understanding of Islam. Various aspects of Islamic law, Shari'ah , he says, may seem illogical to non-Muslims, or non-practicing Muslims; Naik claims these rules are sensible. Islam, in his view, is the best way of life because its teachings constitute practical solutions for the problems of mankind.

Idol Worship in Islam

Naik was once asked: "Muslims go on a pilgrimage to Mecca and worship the Kaba'h by circumabulating it and kissing the black stone. Is that not idol worship?" Naik replied:

Naik goes on to say:

Adoption in Islam

Naik believes that Muslims are allowed to adopt children but that such adoption cannot have a legal status under Islamic law. Giving the adopted child a legal name (of the parent) is something he considers forbidden. Also, once the child grows up, the female members of the family must treat him as a non-mahram (stranger) and observe hijab (be veiled) in his presence. [1]

Punishment for Apostasy

Naik believes that the Islamic injunction prescribing death for apostasy - those who leave the faith - is justified. He compares it to death penalties meted out to national traitors (army generals who defect being the example cited) and proclaims that apostates fall into the same category. [2]

Naik asserts that all instrumental music is haraam (forbidden), except a one-membraned drum. [3]

Riba or Interest

Naik believes that Muslims should not receive, give or witness interest-related financial transactions. He declares that it is haraam (forbidden) for Muslims to own and use credit cards. He also says that taking loans or getting insurance is prohibited. He takes this further and says that it is also forbidden for Muslims to work in banks. [4] His supporters claim that his comments are relevant only in the context of banks dealing with interest.

Islamic Dietary Laws

Observant Muslims do not eat pork. Naik argues that pork is forbidden because the swine is a dirty animal by nature, and that its flesh is the source of many diseases:

Naik also believes that diet has psychological/ethical consequences and one is what one eats :

He also says:

Naik supports the practice of hijab , or the covering of a woman's aura . He writes that in Islam, a woman is required to cover herself entirely except for her face and hands up to her wrists. He claims that Islam thus protects women from the lust of men. For men, he prescribes looking away from women if immodest thoughts enter their minds.

Naik argues that polygyny , or the Muslim practice of taking up to four wives is justified as it is in the best interest of both women and men. He claims it protects the modesty of women, while keeping men from going astray. He writes in his website that human males are polygamous by nature and that a man is less likely to cheat if he has more than one wife. He also believes that there are more marriageable women than men in the world and claims:

It should be noted that the numbers he cites seem outdated, stemming from the time many men had died recently in world war II. Today there are more males born than females, particularly in some countries like India and China for cultural reason, so from a purely arithmetic point of view, it would be no problem to match every woman with a male.

Naik points to Quran 4:3 to explain the Muslim position on polygyny. This verse explains that a man can take more than one wife only if he is able to treat them equally. If he cannot do this, he should have a relationship with only one wife and/or "what your right hands possess" (i.e. female slaves and concubines). [6]

A woman's Value as a Witness

Quran 2:282 says that two female witnesses are equal to one male witness . According to Naik's interpretation, this verse deals only with financial transactions and murder cases. Naik says:

Naik extends this thought to murder cases and says:

Islam prescribes Zakat , or obligatory charity towards other Muslims. [8] Ideally, every Muslim who has assets in gold, silver, livestock, savings and currencies that exceed the nisaab level should give 2.5% of those assets every lunar year to charity.

Naik believes that if Muslims followed Islamic law in this regard, poverty among Muslims could be eliminated. [9]

Prosecution of Criminals

Between Muslims, Shari'ah prescribes capital punishment for crimes such as murder and rape -- unless the victim's family either forgives the culprit or receives blood money, or both.

Naik believes that these penalties are necessary to prevent rape and murder, and that these penalties would ultimately make for a safer society. [10]

Permissible food in Islam

In a 2006 TV appearance, Naik declared that it was forbidden, for Muslims to eat prasad. Prasad is food offered to Hindu deities and then shared with friends and family; it is believed to convey blessings and good fortune. Naik said that too many Muslims say ' Bismillah ' over the food, and eat it to please their friends. Naik claims that the following verse from the Qur'an forbids the eating of prasad:

Wishing Christians a Merry Christmas

In a 2003 speech in Toronto, Naik asserts that it is forbidden for Muslims to wish their Christian friends a merry Christmas. Naik believes that this common greeting acknowledges Jesus as a son of God and is thus blasphemy for Muslims.

Implementing Shari'ah in India

Naik writes that while he appreciates that India presently allows Muslims to have their own personal law:

Some have criticized Naik for trying to subvert basic democtatic rights in India (for promoting Shari'ah) by exploiting the same freedoms given to him in Indian democracy. He is considered one of the leading "Parasitic Intellectual Jihadis" in the democratic world for this reason. A Parasitic Intellectual Jihadi is one who exploits the very freedom and equal rights given to him in a non-Muslim majority nation to subvert the same for non-Muslims.

Debates and Dialogues

Naik sometimes participates in debates as part of his public activities. His supporters find two events notable:

Debate in Chicago

One of the featured activities at the 2000 Chicago ICNA Conference (a gathering of American Muslims) was a debate titled " The Quran & the Bible in the Light of Modern Science ", between Naik and a Christian medical doctor named William F. Campbell. Campbell took three years out of his practice to write a book called The Qur'an and the Bible in the light of history and science , which he conceived as a rebuttal to Maurice Bucaille's The Bible, The Qur'an, and Science . Each of the debaters tried to discredit the other's scripture by parsing out verses from their counterpart's Holy Scripture and pointing out perceived errors. The debate can be downloaded here .

Inter-Religious Dialogue in Bangalore

An "Inter-Religious dialogue for Spiritual Enlightenment" was held on the 21st of January 2006 at Bangalore. Naik and the founder of the Art of Living, Sri Ravi Shankar, spoke on the topic 'The Concept of God in Hinduism and Islam , in the light of sacred scriptures.'

This was by far the biggest dialogue in which Naik participated and can be viewed here .

During the event, Naik said, "religious tolerance is important in Islam but tolerance does not mean acceptance." He claimed that people of other religions were misguided and said, "Muslims would have a problem with the Hindu imagery of the god Vishnu." Naik also claimed that the Vedas prophesize the coming of the prophet Muhammad for which Ravi shankar replied, "Muslims should now respect the Vedas and not call it scriptures of the unbelievers."

Challenge to Pope Benedict XVI

On September 29, 2006, Naik invited Pope Benedict XVI for open interfaith dialogue. [12]

Challenge to Dr. Zakir Naik from Indian Christians

Sakshi: an apologetics network in India has now challenged Dr. Zakir Naik to a debate.

Ali Sina's Challenge

Internet debater Ali Sina's offer to Naik for a written debate has remained unanswered for over 3 years. [13]

After numerous attempts to reach out to Naik, Sina has been instructed by Naik's assistants that Naik does not participate in written debate. Sina has instead been posed a counter challenge by Naik's supporters to arrange for a live audience of at least 10,000 people. Sina, in counter claim, says this demand is not justified and cites the threat to his life from Islamic terrorists as well as the lack of time in a televised debate. He has instead offered to publish the written debate on his website. [14]

Refusal to Debate Sam Shamoun

Naik's supporters.

Naik supporters claim that Naik can quote, from memory, Islamic scriptures like the Quran and the hadith, and also books from other religions like the Old Testament , the New Testament , the Vedas, and the Manu Smriti.

Naik's Critics

Muslim critics.

Naik's views on prasad (eating ritually dedicated vegetarian food to a Hindu god) and Christmas wishes have been discussed on Indian television channels. Naik believes that taking part in such activities is haram for believing Muslims. During NDTV's televised debate "The Big Fight" (March 11 2006) and prominent Indian Muslims such as Salman Khurshid and Javed Akhtar confronted Naik over what they felt were Naik's mischievous attempts to radicalize the Indian Muslim community and promote communal strife.

Other Muslims like Sheikh Taj-Al Halily and the members of the Muslim Canadian Congress have also rejected this viewpoint on Christmas wishes. [15]

In response to questions about Naik, Darul Ifta, an Islamic organization in India which issues advice and fatwas has said that "one should not rely upon his speeches" [16] , "his knowledge is not deep" [17] and that"he is deviated from the path of well-versed Ulama" [18] . They also say that Naik is "spreading mischievous things and misguiding simple Muslims to wrong path" [19] and that "he is religiously deviated, some of his talks are unauthentic." [20] They advise other Muslims that "one is most probably feared to fall in fitnah by listening his speeches." [21]

Complete quotes from Darul Ifta are given below:

"The statements made by Dr Zakir Naik indicate that he is a preacher of Ghair Muqallidin, he is of free mind and does not wear Islamic dress. One should not rely upon his speeches. " [16]

"He seems Ghair Muqallid and his knowledge is not deep. Therefore, he is not reliable and Muslims should avoid listening to him." [17]

"Religion should always be learnt through authorized Ulama and authentic books. According to the beliefs and thought that we know about him, he is deviated from the path of well-versed Ulama in many of the thoughts. His approach seems contradicted to authentic Ulama of salaf. Therefore, one should avoid attending his programmes. However, if you happen to listen his talk you should not rely him until you confirm it by any Aalim." [18]

"We do not have details about Dr. Zakir Naik, only we know that he is an agent of Ghair Muqallideen, away from knowledge and wisdom, spreading mischievous things and misguiding simple Muslims to wrong path." [19]

"According to the sayings of Zakir Naik quoted in people's questions, he is religiously deviated, some of his talks are unauthentic. A common man may not be able to differentiate between right and wrong; therefore people should avoid listening his speeches, they are feared to fall in deviation." [20]

In November 2008, a fatwa was issued against Zakir Naik by Islamic scholars in Lucknow India for supporting Osama Bin Laden and glorifying Yazeed, the 'killer' of Imam Hussain , a prominent figure in Shia Islam. [22] Lucknow's shahar qazi Mufti Abul Irfan Mian Firangi Mahali described Naik as a kafir (non-Muslim) in his fatwa, which states he should be ex-communicated from Islam.

Non-Muslim Critics

Non-Muslim critics have claimed that Naik's views on "Idol worship in Islam" are hypocritical. They pointed out that he deliberately talking only of "standing on idols" and nothing else which could be deemed disrespectful (like spitting or kicking). [23]

He has also claimed that eating pork can lead a human to acting like a pig, an assertion which has produced much criticism. [24]

Critics also point to Naik's strident debating style to claim that he wants to raise communal feelings. [25] During the Bangalore debate, Naik criticised other religions including Hinduism. His co-speaker Sri Sri Ravi Shankar simply replied, "to each their belief, and it is not our position to question them." [26]

Various published sources, such as the CIA Factbook, contradict Naik's claims that there are more women than men in groups of marriageable age than men, a key point in his defense of Islamic polygyny. [27] Critics say this undercuts his rationale for polygamy.

Ali Sina, a prominent internet critic of Islam, has claimed that Naik is a showman who twists the truth and fools his audience. He has reviewed the debate between Campbell and Naik and claims that Naik misrepresented Islam with his statements. [28]

Also in June of 2010, UK Home Secretary, Theresa May, banned Zakir Naik from entering the country due to past statements of his apparently supporting terrorism and Islamic terrorists such as Osama bin Laden. He had been due to give a series of lectures at arenas in Wembley Arena and Sheffield.

Zakir Naik

A medical doctor by professional training, Dr Zakir Naik is renowned as a dynamic international orator on Islam and Comparative Religion. He is the president of Islamic Research Foundation, Mumbai. Dr Zakir clarifies Islamic viewpoints and clears misconceptions about Islam, using the Quran, authentic Hadith and other religious Scriptures as a basis, in conjunction with reason, logic and scientific facts.

He is popular for his critical analysis and convincing answers to challenging questions posed by audiences after his public talks. Naik says that his goal is to “concentrate on the educated Muslim youth who have become apologetic about their own religion and have started to feel the religion is outdated”.[54] He considers it a duty of every Muslim to remove perceived misconceptions about Islam and to counter what he views as the Western media’s anti-Islamic bias in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.[82] Naik has said that “despite the strident anti-Islam campaign, 34,000 Americans have embraced Islam from September 2001 to July 2002”. According to Naik, Islam is a religion of reason and logic, and the Quran contains 1000 verses relating to science, which he says explains the number of Western converts.[83] Some of his articles are published in magazines such as Islamic Voice

Zakir Naik Biography and Early Life

Zakir Naik was born on 18 October 1965 in Mumbai, India. He belongs to a Konkani Muslim family of the Dawoodi Bohra sect. His father, Abdul Karim Naik, was a physician and a former president of the Indian Medical Association. His mother, Roshan Naik, was a homemaker. He has a brother, Mohammad Naik, and a sister, Nailah Naushad Noorani.

Naik attended St. Peter’s High School in Mumbai, where he was a brilliant student and a topper in his class. He was also interested in science and religion, and would often read books on both subjects. He was influenced by the works of Ahmed Deedat, a South African Islamic preacher who was known for his debates with Christian evangelists. Naik met Deedat in 1987, when he visited India, and was inspired by his style and approach. Deedat later gave Naik the title of “Deedat plus”, indicating that he was better than him.

Naik pursued his higher education at Kishinchand Chellaram College in Mumbai, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree. He then enrolled at Topiwala National Medical College and BYL Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai, where he completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree. He graduated in 1991 and became a licensed physician. However, he did not practice medicine, as he was more passionate about preaching Islam.

In 1991, Naik founded the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), a non-profit organization that aims to promote Islamic awareness and education. He also started delivering lectures and speeches on Islam and comparative religion, and engaging in public debates with scholars and leaders of other faiths. He gained popularity for his fluent command of English, Arabic, Urdu and Hindi, his extensive knowledge of scriptures and his ability to quote verses and references from memory. He also used scientific facts and logic to support his arguments and challenge his opponents. He claimed that his mission was to clear the misconceptions and misunderstandings about Islam, and to invite people to the true path of God.

In 2006, Naik launched Peace TV, a satellite television channel that broadcasts his programs and other Islamic content. Peace TV claims to have a global reach of over 200 million viewers, and is available in English, Urdu, Bangla and Chinese languages. Naik also established the Islamic International School in Mumbai and the United Islamic Aid, which provides scholarships to poor and destitute Muslim youth. He also authored several books and booklets on Islam and comparative religion, such as The Quran and Modern Science, Answers to Non-Muslims’ Common Questions about Islam, and Similarities between Hinduism and Islam.

Naik has received several awards and honors for his contributions to Islam and humanity, such as the Sharjah Award for Voluntary Work in 2013, the Dubai International Holy Quran Award in 2013, and the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam in 2015. He has also been ranked among the most influential Muslims in the world by various publications and organizations. ¹²

However, Naik has also faced criticism and controversy for some of his views and statements, which have been deemed as offensive, intolerant and extremist by many. He has been accused of misinterpreting and misquoting scriptures, promoting hatred and violence against non-Muslims, supporting terrorism and radicalizing youths. Some of his controversial remarks include:

  • Endorsing the death penalty for apostates and homosexuals.
  • Justifying the killing of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Praising Osama bin Laden as a “soldier of Islam”.
  • Calling the 9/11 attacks an “inside job” by the US government.
  • Claiming that the Taliban are not terrorists, but freedom fighters.
  • Saying that every Muslim should be a terrorist for anti-social elements.
  • Advising Muslims not to wish Merry Christmas to Christians, as it is equivalent to shirk (associating partners with God).
  • Asserting that polygamy is better than monogamy, and that women should wear hijab to prevent rape.
  • Rejecting the theory of evolution and the big bang theory as unscientific and against the Quran.

Naik’s speeches and activities have been banned or restricted in several countries, such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. He has also been denied entry or visa to some countries, such as the United States, Australia and France. He has been condemned and denounced by many religious and political leaders, as well as by some Muslim scholars and organizations, who have accused him of spreading false and divisive teachings.

In 2016, Naik came under the scanner of the Indian authorities, after it was reported that some of the terrorists involved in the Dhaka cafe attack in Bangladesh were influenced by his speeches. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered a case against him and his organization, IRF, for allegedly inciting communal hatred, promoting enmity between groups, and funding terrorist activities. The NIA also accused him of laundering money through his various trusts and entities, and violating the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). The NIA raided his offices and residences, and seized his assets and properties. The NIA also issued a notice to Naik, asking him to appear before them for interrogation.

However, Naik did not return to India, and instead fled to Malaysia, where he obtained a permanent residency. He claimed that he was innocent and that he was being targeted and persecuted for his religious views. He also challenged the NIA’s charges and the ban on his organization and channel in the Indian courts. He appealed to the Indian government and the international community to intervene and protect his rights and freedom. He also continued to deliver his speeches and lectures online and through social media platforms.

In 2017, the Indian government revoked Naik’s passport, and requested the Interpol to issue a red notice for his arrest. However, the Interpol rejected the request, citing lack of evidence and legal basis. The Malaysian government also refused to extradite Naik to India, and granted him security and protection. Naik thanked the Malaysian government and the people for their support and hospitality, and said that he would continue to live and preach in Malaysia, unless he was forced to leave. He also expressed his willingness to cooperate with the Indian authorities, if they assured him of a fair trial and no harassment.

Personal Life

Naik is married to Farhat Naik, who is the president of the women’s wing of IRF. They have two children, a son, Fariq Naik, and a daughter, Rushdaa Naik. Fariq is also an Islamic preacher and a student of Islamic studies. Rushdaa is a student of medicine. Naik’s family lives in Mumbai, India, while he lives in Malaysia.

Naik follows a simple and modest lifestyle, and avoids luxury and extravagance. He is a vegetarian, and does not smoke or drink alcohol. He is fond of reading, writing and listening to Islamic spiritual music. He is also fluent in several languages, such as English, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. He is a follower of the Quran and the Sunnah, and does not adhere to any particular school of thought or sect in Islam. He considers himself as a student of Islam, and a servant of God and humanity. ¹²

Naik’s net worth is estimated to be around $25 million, according to various sources. He earns his income from his speeches, books, donations and investments. He claims that he does not charge any fees for his lectures, and that he spends his money for charitable and educational purposes. He also denies any involvement in money laundering or illegal transactions, and says that he has nothing to hide or fear. He says that he is ready to face any scrutiny or audit of his accounts and assets, and that he has full faith in God and justice.
