U of T ranked first in Canada, among world’s top 20 universities by Times Higher Education

  • X (Formerly Twitter)

The University of Toronto has jumped three spots in the prestigious Times Higher Education ranking of the world’s universities, placing it firmly among the world’s top 20 institutions.

U of T was ranked 18 th  globally in the 2020 World University Rankings – up from 21 st  place last year – further cementing its status as Canada’s top university. Among public institutions, U of T’s performance was even more impressive, ranking eighth in the world and third in North America.

The new ranking, released Wednesday, evaluates nearly 1,400 institutions around the world each year based on research volume, reputation, citations, teaching, international outlook and other factors.

“It’s not easy to go up three spots in one year,” said U of T President  Meric Gertler , noting that U of T also rose three spots in a   Times Higher Education ranking earlier this year that focused exclusively on universities’ reputations.

President Gertler added that U of T has invested carefully in an international strategy to engage its network of 591,000-plus alumni across the globe.

“We recognize there’s a virtuous circle: The better your reputation becomes, the easier it is to continue to attract great faculty, staff and students from across the country and around the world.”

London-based Times Higher Education, which published its first rankings in 2004, considers a wide range of criteria in its highly anticipated annual list. Research, citations and teaching are the largest components, weighted at around 30 percent each. Research income from industry and a university’s “international outlook,” which includes the ratio of scholarly papers with one or more international co-authors, make up the remainder.

The release of this year’s rankings coincided with Times Higher Education’s World Academic Summit, which is taking place this week in Zurich. President Gertler is attending the international conference on behalf of U of T and will participate in a session Thursday that explores the connection between location and building top talent.

U of T has been selected to host next year’s summit, which is expected to draw to Toronto hundreds of senior academic leaders from around the world.

Four other Canadian universities join U of T in the 2020 World University Rankings’ top 100. They are: the University of British Columbia (34), McGill University (42), McMaster University (72) and the Université de Montréal (85).

The top three places in this year’s ranking, meanwhile, were occupied by Oxford University, the California Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge.

With the latest news, U of T remains the highest-ranked Canadian university, and one of the world’s top-ranked public universities, across the five main international rankings: Times Higher Education, QS World Rankings, Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, U.S. News Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University.

The University of Toronto is one of only seven universities in the world to rank in the top 30 in all 11 subjects considered by the latest Times Higher Education subject rankings.

U of T also ranked first in Canada in 10 of the 11 subjects tracked by the World University Rankings by Subject for the second year in a row.

In the field “clinical and health,” which includes medicine, dentistry and other health subjects such as nursing, pharmacy and public, environmental and occupational health, U of T moved up one spot to fifth globally and remained first in North America among public universities.

“The University of Toronto’s strong showing across such a wide range of disciplines is a testament to the exceptional talent and accomplishments of our faculty, librarians, staff and students across our three campuses,” said U of T President Meric Gertler . “It’s gratifying to see their excellence in research and teaching reflected in these global rankings, year after year.”

Times Higher Education  uses 13 criteria grouped into five pillars to compare universities, with different weightings for each subject. Overall, teaching, research and citations are the most important pillars, each representing 30 per cent of a university’s score. The rest of a university’s rank is determined by metrics such as “international outlook” and industry income related to innovation.

U of T improved its global rank in five subjects in the 2022 edition of the Times Higher Education subject rankings: clinical health (to 5 th from 6 th ), psychology (to 19 th from 21 st ), engineering (to 26 th  from 28 th ), social sciences (to 26 th  from 27 th ), and physical sciences (to 27 th  from 33 rd ). The university held its position in two subjects and declined in four.

In addition to its fifth-place spot in clinical and health, U of T ranked in the top 20 in the world in four other subjects: arts and humanities (15 th ), law (16 th ), education: (17 th ) and psychology (19 th ).

The six other universities that ranked in the top 30 of all 11 subjects alongside U of T this year were the University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, Harvard University, University of Michigan, Stanford University and University of California, Los Angeles.

The results follow the release, earlier this year, of the  Times Higher Education  World University Rankings, in which U of T placed first in Canada and tied for 18 th globally , and the QS World University Rankings by Subject, in which U of T placed in the top 50 globally in 46 subjects – a result unmatched by any other university.

U of T was also recently ranked 16 th globally in the 2022 edition of the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings.

Overall, U of T continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the world’s top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings:  U.S. News & World Report ’s Best Global Universities,  Times Higher Education ’s World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

Ateneo remains top PH school in latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings

MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila University continues to lead Philippine schools as the top university based on the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings , released on Wednesday, September 27.

Ateneo placed in the 1,000-1,200 bracket. Other Philippine universities that also placed in the world university rankings are the University of the Philippines (1201-1500), De La Salle University (1501+), and the University of Santo Tomas (1501+).

The 2024 iteration of the rankings also marks the first time UST placed in the rankings after getting a reporter status – indicating a university “provided data but did not meet our eligibility criteria to receive a rank” – in the 2023 list.

It’s also noted that Ateneo and UP saw a significant drop in their rankings compared to their 2023 placement at the 351-400 and 801-1,000 brackets , respectively, after THE adopted a new methodology for the 2024 edition.

Universities are still assessed based on five areas: teaching (29.5%), research environment (29%), research quality (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry (4%).

However, the 2024 list expands the number of performance indicators from 13 to 18. The new indicators include the tweaking of the citations criteria to research quality to include research strength, excellence, and influence; and the number of patents.

Mapua University, which ranked 1,501+ in the 2023 list, was relegated to reporter status.

Other Philippine universities which received reporter status are Cebu Technological University, Central Luzon State University, University of Eastern Philippines, Mariano Marcos State University, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Visayas State University.

“This year’s ranking analyzed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally. Overall, we collected 411,789 data points from more than 2,673 institutions that submitted data,” according to THE.

It adds that most of the universities joining the world university rankings for the first time for the 2024 edition come from Asia.

Meanwhile, the University of Oxford topped the THE ranking for the eighth year in a row. Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and the University of Cambridge complete the top five universities.

Reaction from PH universities

Ateneo de Manila University president Fr. Roberto “Bobby” Yap said in a statement that the school’s placement as the top Philippine university in the latest THE rankings is “proof that our work in teaching, research, and social engagement is recognized here at home and abroad.”

“These rankings are only guideposts in our journey as a university. So today we celebrate, and let us make this piece of good news an additional source of inspiration as we continue to work to be a force for good in the world,” he added.

Meanwhile, UST Office of the QS/THE Rankings deputy director Nestor Ong told The Varsitarian that the university’s ranking in the 2024 list was a “three-month initiative our office initiated with Elsevier and other research partners to count…research publications from the UST Hospital.”

He adds that UST should continue to strengthen its research capabilities to retain and improve its performance in world university rankings. – Rappler.com
