Like an all-powerful Caesar, Gold Standard 100% Whey bestrides the supplement market like a Colossus.

It is the king of whey protein, towering over swarms of competing brands which lurk jealously in the shadows like Cassius or Brutus.

It is, if Optimum Nutrition’s marketing material is to be believed, the world’s bestselling protein, with literally millions of satisfied customers worldwide.

But does it deserve this status?

Gold Standard Whey has been on the market for a LONG time.

Throughout its reign it has gone through several label iterations, most recently changing from “100% Whey” to “Gold Standard 100% Whey”.

During this time, the product and Optimum Nutrition have remained one of the industry’s most respected brands, amassing a loyal legion of customers.

Looking at the nutritional profile of this product, you can begin to see why.

Gold Standard 100% Whey comprises three different forms of whey protein: whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, and whey peptides.

It also contains amino acids (enzymes to help break down the protein), including three of the most valuable BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine), in addition to other muscle-building goodies such as glutamine.  

Per scoop we’re looking at 24g of protein, 1g of fat, 3g carbs, and 120 calories.

This nutritional make-up makes it ideal for a protein injection between meals, before bed or as a post-workout fix.

Remember, Gold Standard 100% Whey is not a mass gainer or a a meal replacement; it should be used to complement your meals and help you reach your required daily level of protein.

Taste and texture

Gold Standard 100% Whey comes in 16 different flavours.

Most of these are nothing to write home about.

Coffee and Chocolate Malt are pretty decent – but avoid Vanilla at all costs.

It’s atrocious and enough to put you off trying anything vanilla-flavoured ever again.

The powder dissolves quickly with little shaking, which means mixing your shake won’t leave your wrist feeling like a 13 year old kid who’s just discovered Red Tube.

I experienced no clumps, although there was a little bit of froth.

It also digested like a dream, meaning I was able to catch the Tube to work each day without having to constantly clench my arse cheeks for fear of dropping some kind of methane Nagasaki on my fellow commuters.

Effectiveness

I opted to use Gold Standard 100% Whey after coming off a bulking cycle in order to tone up while maintaining muscle mass.

I actually am a really big fan of ON Whey, I like the taste and texture and it has the best value for money in terms of scoops for weight.

What I wanted to say is: I really never understood why most companies don’t offer a version without artificial flavoring with their big sellers.

I might want to be able to spice that stuff up with whatever flavor I have in mind and especially be able to choose the amount of flavoring.

Maybe even without artificial sweeteners and all that other crap they cram in there just so that it doesn’t taste like painter’s putty.

Hey Henry, it’s a pretty good and useful article.

I’m going to start Insanity (Beachbody co) workout, which is very intense.

I was thinking of buying ON and your article made it easy for me to take a decision.

A trainer at a gym told me that even though ON advertises as one scoop has 24g of protein, but it only has 10-12g.

Is that really true?

My earnings are not that great to maintain a great nutrition diet for the insanity workout.

I was just thinking of takin these:

1st meal) 1scoop of ON.

2nd meal) 1 slice of wheat bread with peanut better or yogurt

3rd meal) oatmeal with banana.

4th meal) 1 slice of wheat bread with peanut butter and banana.

5th meal) oatmeal with banana.

Regarding your first question, certainly not.

While some (very dodgy) brands have been guilty of supplement spiking and other fraudulent practices in the past, Optimum Nutrition are one of the most respected – and best – brands on the market.

Regarding your diet, I would add in some more wholesome, protein-rich foods.

Milk, eggs, nuts, tuna, etc are all very cheap and excellent sources of protein.

If you are supplementing your existing diet with this shake – and not replacing meals – as well as lifting weights then you should certainly be building muscle and not losing weight.

Diet-wise, focus on eating healthy, high-protein meals with lots of veggies and drinking lots of water.

Don’t overdo it on the carbs, focus on high-protein, high-fat, as advised by the caveman diet etc.

In the gym, work out with full body routines (such as 5×5) three times per week, leaving lots of time for adequate rest and recovery.

If your goal is to get ripped, then you’ll also need to include some high-intensity cardio (boxing is great) a few times per week to expedite fat loss.

For beginners, I would always recommend a routine which prioritises strength development, as heavy compound lifting is the best way to build muscle, bar none.

5×5 is a great place to start – do some further reading on all of the variations out there (Reg Park, Stronglifts, Madcow).

I’d also recommend finding a copy of “Staring Strength” by Mark Rippetoe, which you should be able to pick up from Amazon fairly easily.

I’ve already told you my favorite—Double Rich Chocolate—but I also really like the Strawberries & Cream (tastes like strawberry milk) and Mocha Cappuccino. 

In addition to a great taste, ON protein also has great mixability. This is probably partially due to the inclusion of soy lecithin, a common (and, yes, safe) food additive used as an emulsifier. Emulsifiers in food help keep textures smooth and rich. 

But the protein powder is also instantized, which means the powder mixes quickly and easily with a basic shaker bottle, or even in a cup with a spoon. (I don’t recommend the latter, though, just to be sure you don’t get any chunks or floaties).

This is a proprietary information. However, please keep in mind the ingredients are listed in order of predominance. For example, Gold Standard 100% Whey has Whey Protein Isolate listed as the first protein on the ingredient list which means it is the primary source of protein in the blend.  

The main advantage of Gold Standard Isolate is that it is 100% isolate compared to Gold Standard Whey which is a blend of whey protein isolate (WPI), whey protein concentrate (WPC), and Hydrolysed Whey. Therefore GS Isolate has a higher percentage of protein and a lower level of carbohydrate, lactose and fat per serving. Gold Standard Isolate has 25g of protein per serving whereas GS Whey has 24g per serving, so depending on how much protein you need daily or whether or not you mind little more of carbohydrates, fats and calories in your diet, you may prefer to choose one over the other. However, both protein powders support muscle recovery and rebuilding, when taken over time with regular resistance training.

Optimum Nutrition 100% Isolate comes in a limited amount of flavours. This is common for full whey isolate products as they tend to not be as popular compared with a lower cost whey protein supplement. The flavours include strawberry, vanilla and chocolate.

Our favourite is the chocolate flavour which tastes great and leaves a pleasant taste in the mouth. As you would expect, this supplement mixes perfectly find in a shaker and is easy to consume. As both of these come in a tub, instead of a pouch, they are easy to get out with the included scoop and closing the lid keeps them fresh. 

The full Optimum Nutrition brand of products is a premium range that can often be higher than some supplement manufacturers. The high-quality and great nutritional profile is the reason many of us are prepared to spend more to get Optimum Nutrition products. Optimum Nutrition is a brand that’s so well-known it almost needs no introduction. They produce the most popular protein powder on the market, Gold Standard Whey, which can be found in practically every supplement store in the United States.

Ultimate Nutrition has a slightly smaller reach, but they have a pretty dedicated following among bodybuilders, in part because they sponsor Mr. Olympia Phil Heath.

Both brands offer a variety of different protein powders (check out our reviews of Ultimate Nutrition’s Gold Whey and Iso-Cool), but we wanted to compare Gold Standard Whey with Prostar 100% Whey Protein, which seems like it was made to compete with Gold Standard. The two brands have nearly identical calories, macros, cost, and ingredients — but across these domains, we’ve stacked them up to see which is tops.

Ultimate Nutrition Prostar Whey

A blend of three kinds of whey that's extraordinarily creamy and surprisingly inexpensive.

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey

The market's most popular whey lives up to its reputation as a solid all-rounder with a huge variety of flavors to choose from. It includes 24 grams of protein in each round scoop and mixes well with milk or water.

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard

Both products have 120 calories per scoop, and ON has a pretty competitive macro split: 24 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbs (1 gram of sugar), and 1 gram of fat.

It’s also got 10 percent of your recommended daily intake of cholesterol (30mg), 5 percent of your daily sodium (130mg) and 8 percent of your daily calcium.

Ultimate Nutrition Prostar

While it has the same amount of calories and fat as Gold Standard, it has just a little bit more protein (25 grams) and fewer carbs (2 grams, 1 gram of sugar). This means the Ultimate Nutrition has more protein per calorie, but just barely.

The real difference is in the micronutrients: Prostar has about 30 percent less cholesterol (20mg versus 30mg), it has over two times more calcium (20 percent of the RDI versus 8 percent) and it has  far  less sodium (30mg versus Gold Standard’s 130mg).

On a macronutrient and micronutrient basis, Prostar comes out ahead.

Winner: Ultimate Nutrition Prostar

Ingredients

There are three kinds of whey in the following order: isolate, concentrate, and hydrolysed. Then there’s cocoa (we sampled the Double Rich Chocolate flavor), soy lecithin (for mixability), natural and artificial flavors, the artificial sweetener acesulfame potassium, and the digestive enzymes Aminogen and Lactase.

The ingredients are nearly identical. The same whey proteins in the same order, they both have soy lecithin, natural and artificial flavors, and acesulfame potassium.

There are two main differences: Prostar has a second artificial sweetener, sucralose (also called Splenda®) and it doesn’t contain digestive enzymes.

For these reasons, I think Gold Standard has better ingredients. Both sucralose and acesulfame potassium are controversial in some circles so it’s smart to only include one of them, but the main selling point was the digestive enzymes. These may help the user to absorb more of the protein and may minimize digestive issues among folks with lactose sensitivities — and  both  products contain lactose.

Winner: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard

If you buy a standard two-pound tub, it’s $30 for 29 servings. That’s $1.03 per serving, or 4.31 cents per gram of protein.

A two-pound tub goes for around $29, which provides 30 servings. That comes to 96 cents a scoop or 3.9 cents per gram of protein.

The difference is small, but clear: Prostar delivers more protein for your dollar.

I tried the Double Rich Chocolate flavor, which despite the name is relatively mild. It’s closer to a dark, cocoa-y chocolate than a milk chocolate so while it’s great with milk, it’s pretty bland with water.

I picked up the Chocolate Crème flavor, and boy is it  creamy . For a product with 1 gram of fat, I was bowled over by how creamy it tasted. With milk, it made for a decadent shake that was almost like melted ice cream. But here’s the kicker: it tasted great with water.

Gold Standard, while an excellent all-rounder, doesn’t taste as great with water. Prostar, therefore, is more versatile — and it’s more useful for folks trying to lose weight because you can ditch the milk and save on calories.

Winner? A Close Call

These are both great products, and the fact that Prostar comes out ahead by a nose in some categories doesn’t mean that Gold Standard isn’t worth your money; it’s a very good product, and it has many flavor options to fit your individual tastes. They’re both fantastic, cost-effective proteins, and Gold Standard is most likely a better pick for folks with sensitivities to lactose. However, on the basis of taste and protein-per-calorie, I tend to prefer Ultimate Nutrition Prostar.
