Narrow your focus

You don't want to try to be everything to everyone, otherwise you'll just end up spreading yourself too thin. Try to focus on a few areas that you're passionate about, such as microservices or API testing , and look for companies that align with your interests.

Source some references

Ensure you have a list of references handy, as many employers will request this during the hiring process. Choose references who can speak to your work ethic and skill set and use this information to make your QA engineer cover letter more appealing.

Create a strong cover letter

To tailor your cover letter, use the exact keywords that are used in the job posting and be sure to highlight your relevant skills and experience, as well as your passion for the role.

When writing your QA tester cover letter, be sure to:

  • Highlight your previous experience in quality assurance and testing roles.
  • Mention any relevant technical skills or software knowledge.
  • Describe your attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Emphasize your ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.

If you have a strong cover letter, it will give you a better chance of being called in for an interview.

Your cover letter needs to highlight your relevant skills and experience depending on the role you’re seeking. If it’s a QA lead position, the hiring managers will be looking for strong team leadership skills, while QA managers will be expected to show advanced stakeholder requirement management skills, among others.

In your cover letter, be sure to mention any previous experience in testing software applications and any other specifics mentioned in the job specifications.

The must-have sections and format of your qa automation cover letter

When writing your qa automation cover letter, keep in mind that it'll only be read by the recruiters and not the Applicant Tracker System (or software used to assess your profile). That's why you should structure your content with a/an:

  • Header (apart from your contact information, include your name, the role you're applying for, and the date);
  • Personalized salutation;
  • Opening paragraph to win the recruiters over;
  • Middle paragraph with key details;
  • Closing that starts from clichés;
  • Sign off (that's not mandatory).

Industry standards dictate your paragraphs to be single-spaced and to wrap your content in a one-inch margin. Designing your qa automation cover letter, refer to one of our templates , which automatically takes care of the spacing and margins.

Choose the same font for your qa automation cover letter as you did for your resume : the likes of Lato and Bitter would help you to stand out in a sea of cover letters in Arial or Times New Roman.

Export your whole qa automation cover letter from our builder in PDF to keep the same formatting and image quality.

The top sections on a qa automation cover letter

  • Header: Include your contact information, date, and the employer's contact details to immediately convey professionalism, making it easy for the recruiter to reach out to you.
  • Greeting: Address the hiring manager or recruiter by name if possible, showing that you've done your research and adding a personal touch to the cover letter.
  • Introduction: Briefly state your interest in the QA automation role and provide an overview of your most relevant experience, grabbing the recruiter's attention from the start.
  • Body: Highlight your technical skills, particularly in automated testing tools and programming languages, and give specific examples of past successes in improving software quality and efficiency.
  • Closing: Conclude by reiterating your enthusiasm for the position, inviting further discussion, and expressing gratitude for the recruiter’s consideration, leaving a positive and proactive final impression.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proficiency in programming languages for automation: Recruiters look for experience in languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript, which are commonly used for writing automation scripts.
  • Familiarity with automation frameworks and tools: Demonstrating expertise in Selenium, Appium, TestNG, Cucumber, or similar tools shows that you can effectively create and maintain test automation environments.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines: Understanding tools like Jenkins, Travis CI, or GitLab CI indicates you can integrate automated tests into the development cycle, which is vital for agile methodologies.
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and QA methodologies: Showing a grasp of various testing methodologies, such as Agile or Waterfall, and best practices in designing and executing test cases aligns with the need for QA automation within different project frameworks.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills: Recruiters value candidates who can critically analyze software behavior and devise test scenarios to effectively catch bugs before the product goes live.
  • Attention to detail and precision in test execution and reporting: Highlighting a track record of thoroughness in executing tests and providing detailed documentation conveys your commitment to quality assurance and the ability to communicate findings to the development team.

How to greet recruiters in your qa automation cover letter salutation

As the saying goes, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."

Write your qa automation cover letter salutation to be more personalized to the actual hiring manager, who is set to assess your profile by:

  • greeting them on a first-name basis, if you have previously communicated with them (e.g. "Dear Sam,");
  • using their last name, if you have more formal communication or haven't spoken to them (e.g. "Dear Mr. Harrows" or "Dear Ms. Marshall");
  • writing "Dear HR Team" or "Dear Hiring Manager", if you have no clue about who's recruiting for the role.

Search on LinkedIn, Google, or the company website to find information as to the recruiter's name.

In any case, avoid the impersonal "Dear Sir or Madam".

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Leader,
  • Esteemed Colleagues,
  • Respected Recruiter,
  • Attention: [Specific Role Title] Search Committee,

Introducing your profile to catch recruiters' attention in no more than two sentences

The introduction of your qa automation cover letter is a whole Catch 22 .

You have an allocated space of no more than just a paragraph (of up to two sentences). With your introduction, you have to stand out and show why you're the best candidate out there.

Set out on a journey with your qa automation cover letter by focusing on why you're passionate about the job. Match your personal skills and interests to the role.

Another option for your qa automation cover letter introduction is to show you're the ideal candidate. Write about how your achievements and skills are precisely what the company is looking for.

However you decide to start your qa automation cover letter, always remember to write about the value you'd bring about. Making it both tangible (with your metrics of success) and highly sought out.

The middle or body of your qa automation cover letter body: a great instrument to tell a story

Now that you've set the right tone with the greeting and introduction of your qa automation cover letter, it's time to get down to business .

Hear us out, the body of your qa automation cover letter is the best storytelling instrument you have, in your job-hunting arsenal.

Writing the next three to six paragraphs, take the time to reassess the advert to discover job-crucial requirements.

Next, choose one accomplishment that covers those key skills and talents.

Use precisely that achievement to tell an exciting story of how you match the ideal candidate profile.

In the undertones of your story or qa automation cover letter body, hint at the difference you'd make and sell your application as the perfect one for the job.

Thinking about the closing paragraph of your qa automation cover letter

Before your signature, you have extra space to close off your qa automation cover letter .

Use it to either make a promise or look to the future.

Remind recruiters how invaluable of a candidate you are by showing what you plan to achieve in the role.

Also, note your availability for a potential next meeting (in person or over the telephone).

By showing recruiters that you're thinking about the future, you'd come off as both interested in the opportunity and responsible.

The zero experience qa automation cover letter: shifting the focus to your unique value

Don't worry if you have no conventional professional experience . Within your whole experience, there's plenty more you can write about in your qa automation cover letter.

Take, for example, your biggest achievement or award - dedicate your cover letter body to describe it and the job-relevant skills you've learned.

Your professional ambitions could also take center stage. Describe what you plan on achieving in the next five to ten years and the efforts you're making towards your dreams.

Key takeaways

Creating your qa automation cover letter should be a personalized experience for the role and the recruiter, where you:

  • Format your cover letter using the same ATS-friendly font (e.g. Railway) as you did for your resume;
  • Greet recruiters, using their name, and follow up with two sentences to introduce yourself, your interest in the role, and to stand out;
  • Map out one key success from your career (or life) that has taught you job-crucial skills;
  • Substitute your lack of experience with an achievement from your internships, degrees, or volunteering gigs;
  • End with a promise for your potential or your availability for an interview.

Test Automation Engineer Cover Letter Writing Tips

1. highlight your skills.

When writing a cover letter for a test automation engineer position, it’s important to highlight your skills and experience. Some of the most important skills to focus on include:

  • Testing experience with different types of software (e.g., manual, automated, performance)
  • Familiarity with different types of testing tools (e.g., Selenium, JMeter, WebDriver)
  • Knowledge of different programming languages (e.g., Java, JavaScript, C#)
  • Experience with creating and executing test scripts

2. Customize your cover letter

Just as you would for any other job application, it’s important to tailor your cover letter to the specific company and position you’re applying for. This means highlighting how your skills and experience make you the perfect candidate for the job.

For example, if the company is looking for someone with experience in Selenium, be sure to mention how you’ve used Selenium in the past and how you’ve been successful in using it. If you have any projects that you’ve worked on that are relevant to the position, be sure to include them in your cover letter.

3. Showcase your passion for testing

Employers want to hire people who are passionate about their work, and the best way to show this is by highlighting your passion for testing in your cover letter. Some ways of doing this include:

  • Telling a story about how you became interested in testing and how you’ve been passionate about it ever since.
  • Sharing how you’ve helped the company you previously worked for save time and money by automating tests.
  • Discussing how you’re always looking for new ways to improve the testing process.

4. Proofread your cover letter

The best way to start an Automation Tester cover letter is by clearly stating your interest in the role and your relevant experience. For example, "I am writing to express my interest in the Automation Tester position at [Company Name]. With my X years of experience in software testing and automation, I am confident in my ability to contribute effectively to your team." This introduction is direct, highlights your relevant skills, and shows your enthusiasm for the role. It's also important to personalize the cover letter by mentioning the company's name, showing that you've done your research and are genuinely interested in working for them.

Automation Testers should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the role and their qualifications. They should reiterate how their skills and experience in automation testing make them a strong fit for the position. It's also important to express enthusiasm for the opportunity to contribute to the company. For example: "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my expertise in automation testing to your team and contribute to enhancing the quality of your software products. I am confident that my skills and passion make me a strong candidate for this position. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing this opportunity further." Finally, they should end with a professional closing, such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by their name.

An Automation Tester's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is sufficient to succinctly present your skills, experience, and interest in the job without overwhelming the hiring manager with too much information. It's important to remember that a cover letter is not a detailed career history, but a chance to highlight your most relevant qualifications and achievements for the specific role. As an Automation Tester, you should focus on your technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with different testing tools and methodologies. Keep it concise, engaging, and tailored to the job description.

Writing a cover letter with no experience as an Automation Tester can seem challenging, but it's all about showcasing your potential, transferable skills, and eagerness to learn. Here's how you can structure your cover letter: 1. **Introduction:** Start by addressing the hiring manager directly if you know their name. If not, a simple "Dear Hiring Manager" will suffice. Briefly introduce yourself and mention the position you're applying for. 2. **Express Your Interest:** Explain why you're interested in the role and the company. Show that you've done your research and understand what the company does. This will demonstrate your enthusiasm and initiative. 3. **Highlight Relevant Skills:** Even if you don't have direct experience in automation testing, you can still highlight relevant skills that you've gained from your education or previous jobs. For example, if you've done any programming, problem-solving, or analytical work, these are all relevant to automation testing. 4. **Showcase Your Learning Ability:** As a beginner, your willingness and ability to learn quickly are your greatest assets. Highlight any instances where you've had to learn new skills or adapt to new situations quickly. If you've taken any courses or certifications related to automation testing, be sure to mention them. 5. **Discuss Problem-Solving Skills:** Automation testing often involves identifying and solving problems. If you have examples of situations where you've successfully solved problems, especially in a tech or IT context, mention them here. 6. **Conclude Strongly:** Reiterate your interest in the role and your eagerness to contribute to the company. Thank the hiring manager for considering your application and express your hope to discuss further in an interview. Remember, the goal of the cover letter is to get the hiring manager interested enough to look at your resume and call you for an interview. Keep it concise, professional, and focused on what you can offer the company.
