Bottom line: Comcast Business Internet , servicing small to midsize startups for over a decade, is a solid alternative to the DSL internet connection that’s currently forcing your employees to squeeze 20 pounds of data through a five-pound tube.

It may cost a little more than similarly micro-focused providers, but its dependable, fast network—not to mention a coaxial cable infrastructure that spans most of the US—rates a look for your expanding shop.

Comcast Business internet provides businesses reliability and speed

Comcast is everywhere, like Starbucks and Pizza Hut, Comcast is everywhere—they don’t necessarily make everyone’s favorite latte or pepperoni slice, but they’re probably serving it somewhere near you.

Comcast Business’s far-reaching availability and reliably stable high-speed internet service are, however, counterbalanced by an 800-pound gorilla with a headset: a notoriously iffy customer service reputation. Still, with five service packages geared toward small businesses and, again, sheer ubiquity, Comcast Business internet is a definite startup contender—just be prepared to pay a little more for it.

In some parts of the country, Comcast Business utilizes fiber-optic connections, which transmit light through glass or plastic threads instead of electromagnetic cables. The biggest advantages of fiber are less signal loss and interference and evenly matched upload and download speeds (more on Comcast Business fiber availability later).

• Business Internet Essential is a bare-bones setup for a four-device operation. Its modest 50 Mbps can handle basic web browsing and email functions but little else. It’s not recommended for heavy file traffic.
• Business Internet Standard is for a seven device shop conducting serious online business. Its 100 Mbps speed can easily shoulder website hosting and cloud-based applications with room to grow.
• Business Internet Advanced  is a beefy choice for medium-to-large offices, with enough speed and bandwidth to handle all of the above, as well as video and audio streaming. Business.org recommends this Comcast Business plan as a price-to-power value.

What you should know about Comcast Business internet

You’ve heard it: Comcast has terrible customer service. It’s legend, but not entirely accurate—most of those complaints are aimed at the residential Xfinity side of the service. Comcast Business fares better in customer satisfaction. Most online customer reviews give positive feedback on the company’s internet speeds and support, while many negative comments regard pricing.

Comcast Business internet sells itself as being “built for business,” 1 specifically small business, promising quick resolutions to service interruptions—including billing credits for downtime and the previously mentioned money-back guarantee trial period. Industry reviews from J.D. Power and here at Business.org rank Comcast’s overall small-business internet service just below that of Verizon Fios (which is less widely available) and AT&T (which is more expensive). 2

Even though—or perhaps because—it falls somewhere between its competitors on several fronts, there’s plenty to like about Comcast Business internet. Mbps to Gbps, speed is speed, no matter which company is providing it.

The takeaway

Comcast Business internet is neither the fastest nor the cheapest, but Comcast Business internet is reliable, available, and loaded with extra features to sweeten the deal. Apart from the monthly pricing, it’s a small-business-friendly service that offers room to grow (to a point). And while there are some of the usual service and outage complaints, Comcast’s past negative customer service reputation doesn’t necessarily apply to its business internet division.

Comcast Business internet FAQs

Xfinity is the consumer, or residential, division of Comcast, providing household TV, internet, and phone services. Comcast split in 2010 to differentiate home services from business customers, as well as to “refresh” its cable-provider image from decades past. 3

The move to Xfinity TV and internet was also called out as a play to distance Comcast from its notoriously terrible customer service reputation and has generally just confused the public to this day. Also, besides being Xfinity’s parent company, Comcast also owns NBCUniversal and its stable of more than a dozen broadcast and cable TV networks plus TV and film production studios.

The real answer is “all of it”—who wants anything less than the fastest internet connection ? The question should be, How much do you want to pay?

Comcast’s Starter Internet at $69.95 a month would satisfy the basic online needs of a pair of employees with just 35 Mbps. The Business Internet 100 package ups the speed and user capacity for an additional $40.00 a month, all the way up to Business Internet 300, which can handle up to and beyond 10 employees—and large file transfers and heavy hosting traffic—for $164.90.

Fiber-optic internet, a growing component of Comcast Business’s internet service model, is a relatively new gigabit speeds technology. While the company’s fiber reach is as good as or better than most other internet providers, it’s still not everywhere; you may have to check into other ISPs . Unless your business resides in one of the following areas, you’d be offered Comcast Business cable internet (until the company’s fiber rollout expands into to your neighborhood).

The 250Mbps download speeds of Business Internet Performance work best for most small businesses. But you’ll need a faster speed if you have five or more employees working in an office, or if you offer public Wi-Fi to customers.

The speed needs of a business vary depending on the size of your office and the number of people using the Wi-Fi. The more employees you have using Wi-Fi–connected computers and phones, the faster your speeds need to be.

The most useful feature is a static IP address. An IP address is the code that internet providers, servers, and other websites use to identify your location for transferring data.

Most IP addresses are dynamic, meaning they change on a regular basis. But a static IP always stays the same, making it a lot more useful for businesses because it allows for hosting servers, having company email addresses, and running a VPN.

Choose Automatic 4G LTE backup for foolproof Wi-Fi connectivity

It’s no secret that many businesses today rely on the internet to survive. So if your internet fails, you may end up losing money if you aren’t able to process transactions, respond to emails, or conduct virtual meetings.

To keep this from happening, Comcast Business offers a 4G LTE backup connection that kicks in if your cable internet ever cuts out. 4G LTE internet isn’t as fast as cable, but it makes sure you and your employees can keep conducting business while your IT specialist gets your speedy cable internet back online.

Set up the Wi-Fi Pro portal to serve customers and build your brand

The Wi-Fi Portal Pro isn’t as integral to doing business as the other features mentioned above, but it’s still handy, especially if you’re a customer-facing business like a coffee shop or boutique. Wi-Fi Pro is an app-based platform that lets you set up different Wi-Fi networks for employees and guests. You can also build a custom website and monitor Wi-Fi traffic on your network.

Comcast Business Internet fees

Comcast Business charges the typical fees that you find on most internet plans. The modem and router costs just under $20 a month. You can skip that fee by buying your own equipment, but then you’ll miss out on the service’s security features. You also technically have to pay an installation fee, but the fee is waived when you order online.

The one standout here is the extra charge you have to pay if you opt for a contract-free plan. Comcast Business has fairly steep contract terms, lasting between one and three years depending on the plan you get. If you cancel your internet plan before the contract is up, you’re on the hook to pay $10 for every month you have left on your bill—a fee that could easily run up to hundreds of dollars.

You can waive the contract for an additional $10 or $20 extra per month, depending on the plan. But we’re not sure if there’s much benefit to this option, since you end up paying more than you should either way.

After you sign up for Comcast Business Internet, a rep at Comcast will contact you to arrange a time for a professional technician to come to your office and set up the internet. Professional installation usually costs a fee, but you can get it waived when you order online.

Your business service plan comes with a gateway (a combination modem and router), which you can rent for $19.95 per month. You can buy your own equipment to save money, but make sure the modem and router are compatible with Comcast’s network.

Comcast Business Internet contracts

Comcast Business has steep contract term agreements, ranging from one to three years depending on the plan you get. If you cancel your internet before the contract term is up, you have to pay $10 for every month still left on the bill.

Comcast Business got a below-average rating in J.D. Power’s most recent US Business Wireline Satisfaction Study, ranking behind Spectrum and Cox in overall satisfaction with a score of 842 out of 1,000. 1 However, Xfinity (Comcast’s residential internet brand) performed very well in our annual customer satisfaction survey . The provider got above-average rankings in our survey, ranking especially well for speed and reliability.

Xfinity delivers pretty much the same type of service as Comcast Business, with cable connections reaching up to 1.25 Gbps. So you can rest assured that you’ll have fast speeds and reliable service on a Comcast Business plan. However, Comcast Business has higher prices than Xfinity residential plans, with longer contract terms—and we suspect that may be the reason for Comcast’s lower scores in the JD Power study.

Comcast Business Internet vs. AT&T Internet for Business

AT&T beats out Comcast Business when it comes to business internet plans. The fiber provider has much faster speeds—including symmetrical upload speeds that you can’t get on a cable connection like Comcast’s. AT&T gets much better ratings in J.D. Power’s 2022 US Business Wireline Satisfaction Study, and its packages and add-ons cost less.

Comcast Business Internet vs. Spectrum Business

Like AT&T, Spectrum also has a leg up on Comcast Business. Although it has fewer plans to offer, Spectrum’s baseline plan gets you faster download speeds for the same price and also includes up to 25 email addresses and a custom domain. Spectrum also has fiber internet for enterprise customers in some areas. Other than that, both providers are similar, with 24/7 customer support and options to add on static IP addresses and 4G LTE backup.

Comcast works with potential customers over the phone to help determine the optimal products and services based on each company’s type of business, number of internet users, cloud-based software requirements and usage trends. Businesses can also bundle services like internet and phone for significant savings. For enterprise clients in certain areas, Comcast offers SLA-backed dedicated internet with static IP addresses and symmetric speeds of 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps, but pricing for this type of internet service is not publicly listed by Comcast or other dedicated internet providers. Still, with all of these features and services in mind, Comcast is the best business internet service provider for enterprise businesses.

When buying a business internet service, you’ll notice the same set of features for business customers as you’d expect for residential internet. While the most important internet feature is reliability, most ISPs like Comcast offer the same 99.9 percent advertised uptime with 24/7 customer support to resolve issues quickly. The Comcast Connection Pro add-on for $39.95 per month is an automatic wireless backup system to keep your internet connection up and running if you lose your normal power or service. Wherever your fiber internet connection or power is interrupted, the cellular route immediately switches to an available 4G LTE wireless connection to maintain basic internet service for up to 16 hours on computers or other devices, like point-of-sale registers, that keep your revenue flowing. Most Comcast business internet plans include SecurityEdge to protect your network and inform you of any attempted breaches. This intelligent cybersecurity tool updates and refreshes every five minutes, pulling the most up-to-date information possible from a global threat database. Static IP Addresses

Comcast offers static IP addresses for all business fiber and dedicated internet clients. For business internet, a static IP address starts at $24.95 per month with the option to buy one, three or 13 permanent addresses for an additional charge. With dedicated plans, Comcast assigns up to two permanent IP addresses per circuit to run multiple servers or applications like a virtual private network (VPN). You can also purchase additional IP addresses for dedicated plans.

Comcast divides the U.S. market between three regions — Northeast, Central and Western. The prices below reflect an address in the Western division. Our breakdown reflects discounts for autopay and paperless billing, and most plans include free professional installation. Unfortunately, some contracts require a multiyear commitment with escalating prices and early termination fees.

In addition to the above business internet plans, Comcast also offers ethernet-dedicated internet with symmetrical speeds from 1 Mbps up to 10Gbs, static IP addresses, primary and secondary DNS hosting, service level agreements, and 24/7 priority support. However, pricing for the dedicated internet plans is not publicly available and requires a discussion with a Comcast representative.

Comcast’s business internet installation is typically available within five to 10 days of placing your order, which is on par with the rest of the industry. Comcast recommends you provide at least two 110v AC outlets for service.

Customer Support

All Comcast business internet plans include 24/7 support, which is something you’ll find with most major ISPs. While the company’s residential Xfinity customers may wait as long as 24 hours for a response to an outage, Comcast business customers receive priority service with a four-hour response window. We spent time speaking directly with Comcast’s support team during our review process and found the staff knowledgeable, helpful and courteous in all of their responses to our questions about services and features.

Comcast also has an online self-service portal where you can check the status of a connection, troubleshoot your internet, configure your services, and reach a support specialist via chat. The Comcast website features additional resources and informative articles to improve the user experience. We appreciate that the vendor also offers the Comcast Business App through which you can manage your business internet without being onsite.

Limitations

The pricing for most Comcast business internet plans requires some attention to the fine print. The advertised price is usually what you’ll pay only for the first year of service, with a significant price increase for each subsequent year. For example, a plan that starts at $139.99 per month will jump to $154.99 in year two and $194.99 for the final year of your contract. Keep that in mind when budgeting this expense.

You should also remember that Comcast’s fiber plans are limited to a maximum upload speed of 35 Mbps, the same limit you’ll find with Spectrum. If you’re searching for a service provider with better fiber upload speeds, both AT&T and Verizon offer fiber plans with upload speeds that exceed 800 Mbps. We particularly liked that business owners can also manage separate Wi-Fi connections for guests and employees. This ensures that guests’ Wi-Fi usage doesn’t impact the bandwidth employees need while also creating an added layer of security.

Comcast Business SecurityEdge

One of the major concerns when starting a business is preventing network security threats . Comcast Business Security Edge is an add-on that can help protect against threats like malware, ransomware, phishing and botnet attacks, an additional layer of security unique to Comcast in our review of business internet service providers (ISPs). The result is a more secure network less vulnerable to data breaches that can cost your business money and impact its brand reputation negatively. We liked the focus on security as small business cyberattacks can be so costly that they lead to business closures.

Dynamic and Static IP Addresses

Every Comcast Business plan comes with dynamic IP addresses. For businesses that need to stay connected, Comcast Business can change IP addresses whenever necessary. However, we liked that business customers can also add static IP addressing. For businesses that need a central hosting spot for websites or for those who need to provide remote network services for their employees, Static IP addresses offer a benefit over dynamic IP addresses, so we liked that Comcast offered these to business customers.

Comcast Business Mobile plans offer voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP) services in addition to a customer’s business internet plans. Mobile plans can be used to support voice calling in the workplace or on the go, through a wide range of hardware. Additional features include readable voicemails and unlimited local calling. We found Comcast’s mobile plans particularly useful for startups with team members that are regularly traveling to make sales pitches or appeal to investors.

For a more dedicated VoIP experience, Comcast Business VoiceEdge delivers a cloud-hosted solution that can scale with a company. Along with basic line features and mobility, VoiceEdge allows small businesses to connect through audio conferencing, which we found ideal for businesses using a hybrid-work model.

Ethernet Dedicated Internet

Comcast Business Internet already offers plans with download speeds up to 1.25 Gbps. However, startups in need of their own connection can take advantage of Comcast’s Dedicated Internet using Ethernet. Symmetrical upload and download speeds mean that large web conferences, data transfers and any cloud-based service can be handled with ease. We especially liked this feature for tech startups or fully remote teams that are reliant on strong, fast internet connections to remain operational.

4G LTE Wireless Backup

Outages can occur at any point during the development of a new venture, which means it’s important to have backup options. Comcast’s Internet Connection Pro Automatic Backup provides business customers with 4G LTE connections to keep businesses up and running should a connectivity outage occur. A team of experts behind the scenes can assist with the needs of the customer until the primary connection is back online.

Comcast Business Internet Cost

Comcast Business Internet costs range from $69.99 per month for the Essential plan to $349.99 per month for the Gigabit plan. The full list is as follows:

These prices reflect the monthly payment for the first 12 months of the agreement (excluding the first month), after which the price increases for the remainder of the contract. There’s also a discount for customers that enroll in AutoPay and paperless billing, and each plan comes with Comcast’s Business SecurityEdge internet connection. Note that these prices exclude installation fees and Comcast business equipment fees.

Comcast Business Internet Setup

Depending on location, Comcast’s internet setup can take anywhere from three to five days once a plan has been purchased. Customers can either set up an appointment with the service specialist or request to be put on a waitlist for an earlier installation date. If customers choose to include Business Wi-Fi in their business internet package, they will have the option to set up and install the Comcast Business Wireless Gateway themselves.

Customers are required to lease a router specifically for Comcast Business Internet for internet-related services, such as SecurityEdge and Business Voice, unless their current modem is deemed compatible with the service. While installation is included in the internet plan, there is a separate monthly fee of $19.95 per month should they need it. Similar to Business Wi-Fi, there is a self-installation guide on the Comcast Business Website as well should you decide to install the equipment yourself.

Comcast Business Internet Customer Service

Comcast Business Internet has 24/7 customer service for its customers, either by phone at (855) 319-0103 or by email via their website form. We found the 24/7 access to support to be a great benefit as it isn’t a given with some of the other business ISPs that we reviewed. Customers can also use online chat and connect with a representative for all general business internet inquiries.

Comcast Business Internet Drawbacks

While Comcast’s fiber-optic network spans across the nation, it’s still relatively limited in availability compared to cable or satellite internet. Customers in rural areas or places that Comcast doesn’t cover should consider our Viasat review for an ISP that is more widely available.

We also found Comcast’s gigabit internet plans to be costly when compared to other internet providers offering plans for roughly the same speeds. Fiber-optic internet in general does cost more than cable or satellite internet, but Comcast’s prices still seemed very steep for its gigabit speeds. If your business requires heavy data transfers or other services that rely heavily on symmetric download speeds, you will need to consider the plan cost in addition to other fees, including equipment and add-ons.

Methodology

When considering business internet providers for review, we kept in mind some of the features that business owners would need to get their business going from start to finish. Part of that process included extensive research, participating in provider calls and finally deciding on a best pick case for each of the vendors. Factors such as installation times, internet speeds, business phone services and internet availability were considered when doing so. Choosing an internet provider for your business – whether it’s a large corporation or a small startup – requires careful consideration. Availability, speed, security, reliability, contract length, and budget are all priorities you need to examine when looking at potential business internet providers.

For example, your company may have certain expectations for the bandwidth and contract length. The majority of internet service provider (ISP) contracts are two years, although some don’t require a contract at all. You may have to adjust these expectations if you’re located in a rural area, although there are some plans specifically designed for businesses that are far from city centers.

Also, pay attention to speed and connection type. Download and upload speeds are most commonly displayed in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps) – you can learn more about this in our guide, What Is a Good Internet Speed? Connection type can range anywhere from cable to fiber to satellite. Fiber connections tend to have the fastest potential speeds, but satellite and cable are more widely available.

Plus, ISPs sometimes offer additional features for companies, typically at an extra cost. One example is a static IP address so a business can host its own website and run a server.

Customers report loving AT&T’s business internet. In fact, J.D. Power’s 2022 Business Wireline Satisfaction Study left AT&T in first place with large enterprise companies, with a score of 872 out of 1,000.

AT&T Business Fiber has six plans, ranging from Business Fiber 50 ($60 per month for 50 Mbps) to Business Fiber 5 GIG ($250 per month for 5 Gbps). If your company needs incredibly fast internet speeds, the 5 Gbps plan might be your only good option, as it’s five times faster than almost all of AT&T’s competitors’ plans. So, if you’re constantly uploading large files, holding video conferences, and performing other bandwidth-heavy tasks, you might be willing to pay $250 per month for this plan. Note: This price for the speed is an incredibly good deal compared to other offerings in our list.

As a $20-per-month add-on, businesses can also sign up for AT&T’s Managed Internet Backup service, allowing them to stay online even during outages. This feature provides unlimited data via the provider’s 4G LTE wireless network for up to 24 hours.

For large companies with hundreds of employees, there’s technically an even faster option than the 5 Gbps plan, and it’s via AT&T Dedicated Internet. Dedicated internet is not a shared connection like almost all other types, so businesses don’t have to worry about loss of bandwidth during high-traffic times. However, it requires special installation. AT&T’s dedicated speeds start at 20 Mbps but go all the way up to a staggering 1 terabit per second (Tbps).

A key component of AT&T is its generally contract-free plans as well as its many bundling options. If you’re in need of a business phone plan, you can bundle business internet with an AT&T phone plan for an extra $15 per month.

Overall, Verizon has been the highest ranked for customer satisfaction for small and medium businesses for six years straight by J.D. Power. The company offers many plans and bundles for small businesses and major companies.

Businesses have three fiber plan options when it comes to Verizon Fios Business Internet. On the lower end is Fios 200/200, which is $69 per month and has 200 Mbps download and upload speeds (the fact that the download speeds and upload speeds are symmetrical are key if your company often uploads larger files to remote servers). Or step up to Fios 500/500 for $129 per month with a download/upload speed of 500 Mbps. The fastest plan, Fios Gigabit Connection, costs $249 per month and offers up to 940 Mbps.

With Verizon Fios business bundling you can pair any internet service with a Business Digital Voice Line for an extra $20 per month. Plus, Verizon offers Fios TV business plans for private viewing, public viewing, and bar and restaurant viewing, which is very convenient if you want to keep your business services together under one provider.

Verizon Business does require a contract of one to three years that renews automatically, as well as a price guarantee – the length of the guarantee varies by plan tier. There’s also an early cancellation fee of 50% of the base monthly charges for the remainder of the contract. If you don’t like contracts or want more flexibility with your plan, you may want to choose a different provider that doesn’t lock you into a strict contract like Verizon does.

Verizon is still lacking in some locations, which is a major reason why it isn’t yet as common as it could be for businesses. While Verizon overall is known for having great coverage nationwide and internationally, Verizon Fios Business is only available in select major cities on the East Coast. If Verizon Fios isn’t in your area, try calling customer service to request it.

If fiber isn’t available in your area, you may be able to get Verizon 5G Business Internet. The three 5G plans include up to 100 Mbps for $69 per month, up to 200 Mbps for $99 per month, or up to 400 Mbps for $199 per month.

Lastly, Verizon’s LTE Business Internet is a decent option if neither fiber nor 5G is available at your company’s address. You can get either 10 Mbps for $69 per month, 25 Mbps for $99 per month, or 50 Mbps for $199 per month. All three LTE plans have no contracts and come with varying data allowances.

Comcast Business offers a nice blend of decent pricing, a stable connection, and fast speeds. Depending on your address, its plans run from 50 Mbps starting at $49.99 per month to 1.25 Gbps at up to $349.99 per month (including discounts for autopay and paperless billing). Comcast Business doesn’t charge for installation, and companies have a 30-day trial before being locked into a contract of two or three years. In some locations, it offers the 100 Mbps plan for as low as $39 per month for 12 months with no contract.

If you’re frustrated by outages, Comcast can switch to a cellular 4G LTE backup connection for up to 16 hours if there’s a power outage or other unexpected event, so your business can continue moving smoothly despite any environmental factors at play. Keep in mind, however, that this backup service costs an extra $39.95 per month.

One bonus of Comcast is that it offers a contract-free plan in some areas. This flexibility is especially important for small business owners who aren’t sure if they want to commit to Comcast for the long term.

Another bonus is the option for businesses to request a dedicated account representative. This person can help businesses with whatever issues they may have, and they can recommend services they believe will help optimize operations for your company. This is in addition to Comcast Business’ 24/7 tech support.

Frontier Business  »

Fast speeds up to 2 Gbps

Like Verizon, Frontier offers fiber plans, but unlike Verizon, Frontier’s plans are relatively affordable for their high speeds. Plus, Frontier doesn’t charge for installation. Frontier is about half the price of its competitors for what it offers. The least expensive Frontier option is Business Fiber 500, which starts at $64.99 per month with autopay. Next comes Business Fiber 1 Gig starting at $89.99 per month, and the fastest is Business Fiber 2 Gig starting at $129.99 per month.

Customer service, however, is not Frontier’s best asset. According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), the customer satisfaction score for Frontier has remained pretty steady at 74 out of 100. The Better Business Bureau has rated Frontier Communications Corporation with an F for poor service and missed appointments.

If you do decide on Frontier, you can add on other technologies for your small business, including RingCentral (all-in-one secure video, message, and phone app), SmartVoice (cloud-based access to calls and messages), and a static IP (offers safe sharing of larger files over a secure network and remote access).

Frontier, while growing, is not available across the entire country. At press time, it was available in: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Overall, Frontier is a great option if you’re looking for inexpensive yet quick internet and don’t think you’ll need much help in the customer service department. You also should expect to have some outages due to weather.

If your company is located in a rural area that’s not typically served by one of the larger business internet companies, then you may want to look into Viasat. It offers satellite internet for small businesses and has professional installation.

Viasat does offer relatively fast satellite internet, with speeds up to 100 Mbps and rural data caps of up to 200 GB. However, for the speeds offered, plans are much more expensive than other options. Plans generally start at $175 per month for speeds of just 35 Mbps and 75 GB of high-speed data. For download speeds of 100 Mbps, you’ll be charged $500 per month.

In some areas, you may only be able to get up to 12 Mbps download speeds with varying levels of high-speed data – 10 GB for $100 per month, 50 GB for $175 per month, or 75 GB for $250 per month. Latency also tends to be an issue with satellite internet by virtue of the connection type.

All plans have a minimum 24-month contract and a $300 one-time installation fee. With most of these plans, Viasat does include unlimited regular data and video streaming at no extra cost.

Also, Viasat has some of the best national coverage; it’s available everywhere in the United States, plus some areas of Hawaii and Alaska. Your business simply needs to have a clear view of the sky facing south, as the satellite dish points in that direction.

Marketed toward businesses in remote locations, Starlink Business offers fast satellite internet without using fiber optic or cable wiring. As a result of its rural availability, fast speeds, and high data caps, Starlink is relatively expensive. The initial cost of hardware is $2,500, plus a monthly payment starting at $250. Speeds top out at 220 Mbps, and any rain or snow may wipe out the connection temporarily, leaving your business without internet.

One major bonus of Starlink is that your business may set up a receiver anywhere to connect to the internet via the company’s low Earth orbit satellites, which provide lower latency than traditional satellite connections.

Starlink has options for fixed, mobile, and maritime businesses, so depending on the plan you choose, you can move the satellite receiver to another location easily. It doesn’t need to be connected to anything other than a power source. However, you do need a clear view of the sky to achieve a connection. You or your business team will also need to set up the equipment personally or hire a local contractor to set up the system; there is no professional installation option.

Starlink is not as universally available in the U.S. as competitors Viasat and HughesNet, with large coverage gaps mainly in the Midwest and the South. The company’s eventual goal is to provide full global coverage, but it may be quite some time until that vision is realized.

If you’re looking for fiber optic internet without a contract, Google Fiber may have what you need, as it offers minimal terms with no contracts. However, Google Fiber is still expanding, meaning its coverage may not be as widely available as that of other big-name providers.

Users have ranked Google Fiber highly for its transparent prices and easy-to-understand features for each plan. Google Fiber is also easy to reach for customer support via its chat box and their 24/7 phone support, which is very responsive.

Google Fiber offers two business internet plans: Business 1 Gig ($100 per month) and Business 2 Gig ($250 per month). These come with download speeds of 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps, respectively, though both plans have upload speeds of up to 1 Gbps. The major perk is that both internet plans are stated to have 99.9% reliability, with the 2 Gig plan adding a Service Level Guarantee that refunds 25% of your monthly bill if your average uptime sinks below 99.9%. Both plans include a Wi-Fi 6 router, and Business 2 Gig adds two mesh Wi-Fi extenders, a single static IP assignment, and guest Wi-Fi network capability.

Google Fiber Business can be a good option for metropolitan companies that need fast speeds, customer support, and reliability – if the service is available in the area at all.

While not as popular for business internet as it is for home internet, EarthLink shouldn’t be discounted. Its high-speed fiber plans have been slow to roll out across the country, although today it’s offered in nearly every state in a limited number of cities. Its fiber plans are also very fast, depending on the plan you choose: They range from 50 Mbps to 5 Gbps.

Each plan includes no data caps or data throttling and ranges in price from $69.95 per month for 50 Mbps to $169.95 for 1-5 Gbps. This is on the lower end of prices for these speeds. However, you will have to sign a contract with a term that varies based on the underlying provider (EarthLink uses larger companies’ networks to provide service). At minimum, the contract period will be one year, according to an EarthLink representative.

EarthLink as a company overall has received high marks for customer service ratings in the past years. It is important to note, however, that there is not as much available about EarthLink’s business internet in terms of polling or customer reviews, so there is room for speculation on the company’s service and actual connections for businesses.

In addition to purchasing internet, businesses can also add on marketing, branding, and website development and security features to their EarthLink Business plans.

Cox generally offers internet through copper coaxial cables, which is inexpensive and can be fast. It offers a handful of business plans, starting with its Business Internet 100, which has up to 100 Mbps download speeds. Its highest standard business-grade plan offers up to 300 Mbps. For each standard plan, keep in mind that the upload speeds are approximately 10 times slower than the respective download speeds, which should still be plenty for small businesses.

If you have an enterprise-level business that requires more, you can request a free consultation for higher service plans. On the smaller end, you can get up to 940 Mbps, while the biggest corporations can get symmetrical upload and download speeds of up to a staggering 100 Gbps via a dedicated fiber connection.

Pricing is not transparent on Cox’s website, so you’ll need to request a consultation to get a quote for all service levels. There are also plenty of bundling options if you require more than just internet for your business.

Like Verizon, Cox has automatically renewing contracts – a convenient feature if you’re happy with the service, but a downside for companies that are not satisfied and may forget to cancel. You need to provide written notice of cancellation at least 30 days before the contract ends. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck with it for another year unless you want to pay the full remaining contract balance plus an early termination fee.

Cox offers 24/7 customer service, which is helpful if you have any technical issues. The provider also offers the Cox Business Security Suite, which is a data protection program that is free with every internet plan purchase. It comes with up to 25 Security Suite licenses, and you have the ability to purchase more if you have more than 25 people or devices.

Cox is available in 19 states, so if you’re not covered by Cox, you may want to look at CenturyLink, which provides similar services but has a larger coverage area.

The Bottom Line

There isn’t one ISP that’s good for every company. Consider what your business really needs in terms of its usage, its budget and its location. Then, you can prioritize and figure out which of the companies will work best for you. Still can’t decide? You may want to try a provider that doesn’t require a contract so that if it doesn’t work out, you can easily switch. Based on our research AT&T Business is a good place to start.

And the amount of time your connection is active is referred to as its uptime. “Inquire about the history of downtime experienced by the supplier as well as how they handle maintenance,” Kaushik says. “To reduce the likelihood of disruptions, you should inquire about redundancy measures they have in place.”

Company Size

If you have a small business of one to five employees that tend to use the internet to browse the web, check emails, and write basic documents, then you should look for 50-100 Mbps. For midsize companies with 10-20 employees who need video conferencing and remote collaboration tools, you’ll need 100-500 Mbps. For larger organizations with 30-50 employees using the internet for data transfers, data backup and e-commerce, aim for 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps. If you have 50 or more employees who use the internet for web hosting or large-scale e-commerce, you will need at least 1 Gbps. In short, the more devices connected and the heavier-duty the activities, the more speed you’ll need.

Cost by Speed

The best way to do this is by determining the cost per Mbps. Divide the monthly fee by the maximum speeds. For example, AT&T’s lowest plan costs $60 for 50 Mbps, which equates to $1.20 per megabit. AT&T’s highest plan costs $250 for 5 Gbps, or 5,000 Mbps, which comes out to 5 cents per megabit. Be aware, however, that you should factor in customer service, availability, other plan features, and whether you need a lot of speed or not. If you’re trying to decide between a few plans, the cost per Mbps is another factor to help narrow your selection.

Dedicated vs. Shared Bandwidth

Some business internet providers offer dedicated bandwidth, ensuring that your connection is not shared with other users, while others provide traditional shared bandwidth that can lead to fluctuations in speed during peak usage times, Trevor Eason, CEO and tech writer at SamsungTechwin.com, says, “Depending on your business's sensitivity to internet performance, you may want to opt for dedicated bandwidth.”

This totally depends on the provider you select. Most, however, require a modem, a router, switches, and the proper cables. If you opt for fiber internet – a common choice for businesses due to its reliability and high speeds – you’ll need a special fiber connection installed to transmit the data; a clamshell (an exterior protective case for the connection); an optical network terminal (ONT) instead of a modem; a fiber router; and possibly a Wi-Fi extender or two. For satellite internet, you’ll need a satellite internet dish, a satellite modem/router, and a compatible internet device.

In any case, the ISP you select will provide all the necessary equipment and likely offer (or require) professional installation.

First, you should separate your business network from your guest network by using separate virtual LANs (VLANs), or physical networks. Routers, firewalls, and access points offering advanced security features and regular firmware updates will also be key pieces of network equipment. For Wi-Fi access points providing encryption for your network, you’ll need WPA3 encryption. Set up the guest network with internet access only, and use a captive portal with a password for the guests.

If there’s an internet outage or disruption, contact your ISP’s customer service department. Many companies have round-the-clock availability via phone or chat, which comes in handy in situations like this. Some companies in this list also offer backup data for a set amount of time to get your business through potential outages, though this feature comes at an extra cost.

Typically, an ISP will have a devoted spot on its website to report and to track service problems. You should be able to enter your information and receive an estimated time that your service will resume.

This depends on whether you already have a contract with a provider. If you do, you will most likely have to pay the remainder of the contract agreement and/or an early termination fee. Then, you are free to switch to a different provider. The new ISP will likely need to install its own equipment, especially if you’re upgrading to a new connection type like fiber, but the process should generally not take longer than a few business days. Most companies require advance notice if you’re requesting enterprise-level service installation, so the further you plan ahead and coordinate with the new ISP, the less downtime your company will experience.

There's a marked difference between residential and business internet. With residential internet, you only need to cater to you and your family's needs. With business internet, you'll consider the business' and its employees' needs.

Here’s what to look for when picking an internet service for your business.

Price is always crucial, but it's even more important to a business. The right price balances on the edge of a knife. Spend too much, and you'll cut into your profits. Spend too little, and you may not get the speedy and reliable connection you need to make your business successful.

You also probably want faster speeds for business internet than at home. You know that gig internet service we always say you don't need in your house? Well, you may want it for your business, primarily if you work in a media-rich field. Remember that your service's actual speeds may not align with its promised speeds, so it's good to buy on the high end of your acceptable speed range.

When choosing a connection speed, you want to account for every work device on the premises, but you may also need to consider Wi-Fi needs for employees’ and visitors’ personal devices. In some cases, you may want to set up a separate, slower guest Wi-Fi for personal use.

You also want an internet connection you can rely on during business hours. In most cases, a fiber or cable internet connection is the most reliable option.

Your chosen internet service also needs to be available where you live. Not every service provider is present in every area—especially fiber providers . If you live in a densely populated area with many homes and businesses, like New York, you're more likely to have access to fiber internet. If you live in a rural area, you're unlikely to have access to fiber and may need to see if you can find some satellite or fixed wireless options for business.

Finally, think about scalability, otherwise known as “Can this internet connection grow with my company as it expands?” If the answer is no, you’ll be fine if you’re okay with switching providers in the future. But if you want a longstanding partnership, you need a service that can handle your business’s projected growth.

The difference between business and residential internet is in the plans. Residential internet is usually slower than business internet because fewer people and devices typically connect to it.

You can get business internet at home, which is great if you run an at-home business, but it's unlikely that you can get residential internet at an office. And why would you want to? Fast business internet, especially fast fiber business internet, may be the key to success.

Either way, if you’re self-employed or work from home, you may be able to claim your internet as a business expense.

AT&T Business Internet: Best overall

An AT&T Business Internet fiber plan is an all-around excellent option for your growing business. AT&T’s fiber internet is superfast (going up to 5Gbps) and even has symmetrical speeds and unlimited data with some plans. It also ranks first in the American Consumer Satisfaction Index for 2022 .

AT&T Business Internet runs more expensive than its competitors (at least initially). The cheapest plan starts at $75 for 300Mbps. But with the most expensive plan, you get roughly 16 times the speed at three times the price—an increased value for sure.

AT&T’s business plans use a reliable fiber connection, and the speed goes up to 5,000Mbps. That’s unheard of in a home internet connection and eye-popping even in the business sector. And what’s more, you’ll get unlimited data and symmetrical speed with those five gigs, meaning the upload speed will equal the download speed. You’ll both send and receive high-res media files with ease.

As the ACSI score suggests, AT&T fiber internet gets excellent customer satisfaction, so you'll likely be delighted with your service.

Spectrum Business Internet: Best extras

Spectrum is a solid internet provider we often recommend, and Spectrum Business Internet ups the ante by providing a free domain name, customer email addresses, and internet modem with your plan. That's practically everything you need to start a business! Plus, you can find Spectrum internet in 42 states, so you likely live in a service area.

We do want to point out that Spectrum's plans are substantially more expensive from the get-go than other providers' (and they only go up after 12 months). Instead of thinking of the domain name, emails, and modem as free, it may help to think of the extra cost as paying for those features.

But if that’s still too pricey for you, you may be able to get discounts by bundling the business internet with another Spectrum service—business phone lines, perhaps?

All of Spectrum's plans are high speed , reaching the princely pace of a whole gig. However, Spectrum projects that you can connect fewer employee devices than AT&T. These estimates seem low even with Spectrum's cable connection versus AT&T's fiber. The 300 and 600Mbps plans may go much further than Spectrum says. But if you want to avoid that gamble, select Spectrum internet service only if you have a small business.

Spectrum’s customer service needs a little work, according to the ACSI. The service scored just 64 out of 100. That's low, even for internet providers, which traditionally score beneath other industries.

Comcast Business Internet: Most options

Whether you have a small business or a medium-sized one, Comcast Business Internet has an option for you. Depending on your needs, you can get as few as 50Mbps or as many as 1.25Gbps.

Comcast’s biggest strength is its variety. The wide range of plan speeds gives you great scalability for your business to grow. It’s also available almost everywhere in the United States, making it a viable option for nearly everyone.

Unfortunately, Comcast changes its prices depending on its service area, so we can't guarantee exact costs. But for reference, we've included one of the service's price ranges. You can see that these prices get quite expensive (over $300!), so in some areas, Comcast definitely won't be the best value.

Also, Comcast Business Internet is a cable service, so you may not see as reliable of service as you would get with fiber plans. Still, your connection should be stable.

Surprisingly, Comcast, which is legendary for its terrible customer service, doesn’t rank that low with the ACSI. Its score of 68 ranks it above some of the other brands we recommend.

Frontier: Best high-speed internet

Ka-chow! No, it’s not Lightning McQueen that’s going so fast—it’s Frontier Business Internet. After AT&T, our overall pick, Frontier is your best bet for speedy connections.

Frontier's speeds start at 500Mbps, the fastest starting point of our recommended services, and go up to 2,000Mbps. The starting price is a little high ($65), but the value of the plans gets progressively better, especially considering that you get a fiber connection. Also, a router comes with each plan, so factor that into the cost.

Frontier doesn't predict how many devices can connect to each plan without overloading the Wi-Fi, but our speed guide will help you figure it out.

Sadly, Frontier is only available in some states, so your opportunities to sign up for the service are limited. This won't be a problem for, as an example, New Yorkers or Utahns—but Montanans will miss out.

The ACSI gives Frontier fiber a 74, which puts it on the higher end for internet customer service but the lower end for fiber satisfaction. So, though you'll get fast service through Frontier, your interactions with the company may need improvement.

CenturyLink Business Internet: Lowest cost

You'll spend less money with CenturyLink as your business internet service provider. CenturyLink offers 940Mbps and symmetrical speeds for $75 a month, which is quite a steal compared to other Wi-Fi providers. And with no contact, you can save money if needed by canceling (for free!) anytime.

Of course, you want more than just cheap internet; you also want reliable internet. For its cheaper plan, CenturyLink uses DSL, a less reliable option. But the provider also has a business fiber plan, which we recommend in most cases, depending on your business needs.

Also, good news: CenturyLink is fairly ubiquitous, so chances are it’s available in your area as a business internet provider.

Like Frontier, CenturyLink doesn’t offer guesstimates of how many devices can use each plan, but the Business Fiber plan should offer exponentially more connections than the other.

CenturyLink gets a 78 in customer satisfaction for its fiber service (coming second after AT&T), while its DSL gets 62 (between Frontier and Spectrum). Looks like you'll be pleased with Business Fiber, but maybe not so much with Simply Unlimited Business Internet.

Recap: Best internet providers for business

• AT&T Business Internet: When it comes to overall value, AT&T Business Internet is our pick. The speediness, symmetrical speeds, data cap elimination, and customer service reputation make it our top choice—and costly.

Its fastest internet plans yet, dubbed “Ultimate Speed for Business,” feature up to triple current speeds. Comcast also announced the rollout of next-gen, multi-gigabit, symmetrical business internet speeds that are powered by full duplex technology, in select markets.

Effective immediately, new and existing Comcast Business customers can take advantage of the following speed plan increases:

• Essential: 50 Mbps to 150 Mbps.
• Standard: 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps.
• Performance: 250 Mbps to 500 Mbps.
• Advanced: 500 Mbps to 800 Mbps.

Upstream speeds have also been increased for the above, as well as for Comcast Business’s Gigabit Extra and 2 Gigabit plans.

Comcast Business delivers high-speed internet for small businesses, backed with 24×7 support. It also offers this service with unlimited data and the option to lease an all-in-one gateway, enabling private business Wi-Fi that is capable of delivering Gig speeds, a dynamic IP address and Xfinity hotspot service. ACP Funds Will Expire By the End of May. These Low-Income Options Can Help

Affordable Connectivity Program recipients only received a partial credit this month. Here are several options to help make up some of the difference.

Thanks to the ACP, more than 23 million households have been collectively saving almost $700 million per month.

While Congress has been making last-ditch efforts this month to extend the Affordable Connectivity Program , most recipients of the federal broadband benefit have already seen their discounts dwindle from $30 to $14 in May. Even if an extension is passed, there will likely be a gap period during which the ACP's 23 million low-income subscribers won't get any help on their internet bills at all.

Nearly half of ACP subscribers have been military families , according to a White House fact sheet . Older Americans, African Americans and Latinos have also relied on the ACP at higher rates. 

"It's been the difference between choosing to have a roof over my head, whether to eat or whether to pay for the internet, which has things like virtual appointments with my psychiatrist," Kenneth Sigler, a small-business owner from Hernando, Mississippi, who uses the ACP, told CNET. "It basically helps me to keep from having to choose what bills I'm going to pay."

Locating local internet providers

There is some hope that the program will be extended eventually -- President Joe Biden called on lawmakers to extend it in April, and several senators have continued to advocate for an extension -- but for now, ACP subscribers will have to prepare for a world without the subsidy. 

There’s no one resource that can replace the $14.2 billion ACP, but there are a variety of local and state subsidies, nonprofits and discounted plans from providers that can help ease the transition. 

Lifeline is a federal subsidy that provides $9.25 per month to low-income households for home internet or cellphone plans. Its eligibility requirements are a little stricter than those of the ACP. Your income must be 135% or less than the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or $40,500 for a family of four.

You can also get Lifeline if you (or someone who lives with you) participates in any of the following programs: 

• Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as Food Stamps)
• Supplemental Security Income, or SSI
• Federal Public Housing Assistance, or FPHA
• Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit

If you live in California , Oregon or Texas , you must check with your internet provider or visit your state's website to apply for the program.

State and local resources

Some states and cities across the country offer their own local versions of the ACP to help low-income households pay for internet. California , for example, has a website that allows you to search affordable options in your ZIP code based on various eligibility criteria, and Oregon provides an enhanced Lifeline benefit of $19.25 monthly.

Cities like Chicago offer free internet to families in Chicago public schools and eligible city colleges through its Chicago Connected program . The best way for you to find these resources is by going to Google and searching for "[location] internet resources." 

You can also check to see how your state is using the $2.75 billion allocated in the Digital Equity Act to help close the digital divide.

Low-income programs from internet providers

Many internet providers have their own discounted plans available for low-income households, including AT&T , Spectrum and Xfinity . Requirements vary, but they're usually similar to the ACP: one must meet certain income requirements or participate in a federal program like SNAP or the National School Lunch Program.

Nonprofit organizations

There are a number of nonprofits around the country with the goal of closing the digital divide. Some help with monthly internet costs, while others provide devices that connect you to the internet. • Connect All : Part of the InterConnection nonprofit, Connect All provides refurbished computers to low-income users. Eligibility requirements are similar to those of the ACP: Participation in federal programs like SNAP or SSI will automatically qualify you for devices. 
• EveryoneOn : EveryoneOn is one of the most wide-ranging internet nonprofits out there. You can use its locator tool to find low-cost plans and computers in your area, enroll in digital skills courses and find local events that distribute devices.
• Human-I-T : This nonprofit accepts donations from corporations, refurbishes the devices and sells them at a discount to veterans, low-income households, seniors and other groups that qualify. It also offers low-cost internet through its mobile hotspot devices for less than $30 per month. 
• Internet for All Now : This is an initiative of the nonprofit California Emerging Technology Fund that helps Californians find low-cost plans in their area. People in California can call and speak with a trained expert, but the website has resources that anyone in the country can use.
• National Digital Inclusion Alliance : The NDIA is a well-known hub for research and policy aiming to close the digital divide, and while it doesn't offer low-cost internet itself, it's a helpful resource for navigating what's out there. You can also use this map of NDIA affiliates providing broadband adoption services to see what's available in your area.

Explore other internet plans in your area

If your bill's going up dramatically with the end of the ACP, another option is to search for other internet providers in your area. Most ISPs offer plans under $50 monthly, and you can often find additional discounts for things like bundling with a cellphone plan or signing an annual contract.  

Purchasing your own equipment can also save you some extra money each month. It usually costs around $15 to rent a modem and router from your internet provider, while you can buy your own for as little as $100, especially if you go with refurbished equipment. That said, you'll need to ensure your modem is compatible with your provider before you purchase.
