EBSCO Open Dissertations

EBSCO Open Dissertations makes electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) more accessible to researchers worldwide. The free portal is designed to benefit universities and their students and make ETDs more discoverable. 

Increasing Discovery & Usage of ETD Research

EBSCO Open Dissertations is a collaboration between EBSCO and BiblioLabs to increase traffic and discoverability of ETD research. You can join the movement and add your theses and dissertations to the database, making them freely available to researchers everywhere while increasing traffic to your institutional repository. 

EBSCO Open Dissertations extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present.

How Does EBSCO Open Dissertations Work?

Your ETD metadata is harvested via OAI and integrated into EBSCO’s platform, where pointers send traffic to your IR.

EBSCO integrates this data into their current subscriber environments and makes the data available on the open web via opendissertations.org .

Why search this literature?

It is crucial for graduate students to search the thesis and dissertation literature to make sure that an idea or hypothesis has not already been tested, explored, and published.  An additional reason to search this literature is that it is rich with ideas and information not found elsewhere.  If graduate students do not continue on as academics or if students that came after them in their programs did not continue their research, this literature may be the end of the line for scholarship on a topic.

All graduate students should, at minimum, search the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global database (PQDT) to see if the research they are proposing to do has already been done by a student at another institution/university.  RIT dissertations and theses have been included in PQDT since approximately 2006.

Open Access Theses and Dissertations (OATD)

OATD.org provides open access graduate theses and dissertations published around the world. Metadata (information about the theses) comes from over 1100 colleges, universities, and research institutions. OATD currently indexes 6,654,285 theses and dissertations.

While Sandel argues that pursuing perfection through genetic engineering would decrease our sense of humility, he claims that the sense of solidarity we would lose is also important.

This thesis summarizes several points in Sandel’s argument, but it does not make a claim about how we should understand his argument. A reader who read Sandel’s argument would not also need to read an essay based on this descriptive thesis.  

Broad thesis (arguable, but difficult to support with evidence) 

Michael Sandel’s arguments about genetic engineering do not take into consideration all the relevant issues.

This is an arguable claim because it would be possible to argue against it by saying that Michael Sandel’s arguments do take all of the relevant issues into consideration. But the claim is too broad. Because the thesis does not specify which “issues” it is focused on—or why it matters if they are considered—readers won’t know what the rest of the essay will argue, and the writer won’t know what to focus on. If there is a particular issue that Sandel does not address, then a more specific version of the thesis would include that issue—hand an explanation of why it is important.  

Arguable thesis with analytical claim 

While Sandel argues persuasively that our instinct to “remake” (54) ourselves into something ever more perfect is a problem, his belief that we can always draw a line between what is medically necessary and what makes us simply “better than well” (51) is less convincing.

This is an arguable analytical claim. To argue for this claim, the essay writer will need to show how evidence from the article itself points to this interpretation. It’s also a reasonable scope for a thesis because it can be supported with evidence available in the text and is neither too broad nor too narrow.  

Arguable thesis with normative claim 

Given Sandel’s argument against genetic enhancement, we should not allow parents to decide on using Human Growth Hormone for their children.

This thesis tells us what we should do about a particular issue discussed in Sandel’s article, but it does not tell us how we should understand Sandel’s argument.  

Questions to ask about your thesis 

• Is the thesis truly arguable? Does it speak to a genuine dilemma in the source, or would most readers automatically agree with it?  
• Is the thesis too obvious? Again, would most or all readers agree with it without needing to see your argument?  
• Is the thesis complex enough to require a whole essay's worth of argument?  
• Is the thesis supportable with evidence from the text rather than with generalizations or outside research?  
• Would anyone want to read a paper in which this thesis was developed? That is, can you explain what this paper is adding to our understanding of a problem, question, or topic?

Harvard University Theses, Dissertations, and Prize Papers

The Harvard University Archives ’ collection of theses, dissertations, and prize papers document the wide range of academic research undertaken by Harvard students over the course of the University’s history.

Beyond their value as pieces of original research, these collections document the history of American higher education, chronicling both the growth of Harvard as a major research institution as well as the development of numerous academic fields. They are also an important source of biographical information, offering insight into the academic careers of the authors.

Spanning from the ‘theses and quaestiones’ of the 17th and 18th centuries to the current yearly output of student research, they include both the first Harvard Ph.D. dissertation (by William Byerly, Ph.D . 1873) and the dissertation of the first woman to earn a doctorate from Harvard ( Lorna Myrtle Hodgkinson , Ed.D. 1922).

The Austrian dissertation database contains the bibliographical data of dissertations approved in Austria from 1990 on, and in most cases the relevant abstracts. (This website is hosted by the National Library of Austria).

National Library of Australia’s Trove Service

Search for full text digital theses from Australian universities.  On the Advanced search screen under Format, select Thesis.

DART-Europe :  Access to full text theses and dissertations from many countries in Europe.

Europeana : Additional electronic dissertations from other European libraries.

Système universitaire de documentation  (Sudoc): Provides access to records and some electronic theses and dissertations published at French research institutions.

DissOnline provides information on the subject of electronic university publications. It can be used to find out directly all about online dissertations and post-doctoral theses. South America 

• Some electronic theses from Bolivia, Brasil, Chile and Peru can be found at  Cybertesis.NET , a portal created by the University of Chile (Information Services & Library System) that provides an easily accessible tool to full text electronic theses published in different universities of the world.

For more university/national library catalogues, search for the word University/Universidad and the country (Argentina, Peru, etc.) in Google. Find the link to the library ( biblioteca ) and search the catalogue for theses ( tesis ). You may need to click on the advanced search function ( búsqueda guíada  or  búsqueda avanzada ) and select tesis as a format or type. ​

Master of Science

Doctor of Philosophy

Mechanical engineering, explore an m.s. or ph.d. in aerospace and mechanical engineering, thesis program (standard).

The traditional research-oriented M.S. program with thesis emphasizes an advanced study and research experience that is particularly suited to prepare students for research and development careers in the industry or the government and for further graduate studies. To be eligible for the research option, a student must have identified an appropriate research area and be accepted as an M.S. thesis student by a member of the AME graduate faculty.

Requirements for M.S. with Thesis

Non-Thesis Program

The coursework-emphasis plan is designed to meet the professional needs of part-time students and other students whose background and educational goals may be best served by additional instructed study in lieu of the research investigation involved in an M.S. thesis. To pursue this plan-of-study, students must indicate interest in the coursework-emphasis program on the application for admission. After admission, these students are encouraged to identify faculty members who will serve as their academic M.S. program advisers or they may complete the program under the overall guidance of the Graduate Liaison. The non-thesis M.S. program culminates in a comprehensive examination.

Only students pursuing the thesis option are eligible to be appointed for a graduate assistantship.

Students wishing to change from the thesis to non-thesis option must petition the AME graduate liaison,  Dr. Liu . If the petition is approved, no more than 24 hours of credit will be transferred towards the fulfillment of the course requirements in the non-thesis option. Such a transfer cannot take place during a semester.

Requirements for M.S. Non-Thesis

The degree of Philosophical Doctor (Ph.D.) in aerospace or mechanical engineering requires the completion of an original research dissertation in addition to coursework beyond the bachelor's/master's degree.

Our Ph.D. program emphasizes an advanced study and research experience that is particularly suited to prepare students for research careers in industry or government and for positions in academia. To be eligible for the program, a student must have been admitted into the Ph.D. program. The student must then identify an appropriate research area and must be accepted as a Ph.D. student by a member of the AME graduate faculty. A general exam and a dissertation defense at the end of the research program assures that the student meets the high standards of this terminal degree.

Dissertation Defense: “Essays in and for Applied Microeconomics“, Allegra Cockburn

Allegra Cockburn, University of California, Santa Barbara

Allegra is a PhD Candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara, interested in Education, Development and Labor Economics. Her work has focused on quantifying the causal impact of groups that student's identify with, exploiting a novel natural experiment in South Africa. She also works on developing an estimator to estimate enumerator amplifying effects in Randomized Controlled Trial settings. More broadly, her work has focused on barriers to implementation, take-up and scale up of programs and interventions. Currently, she is particularly interested in using empirical techniques to examine ways to facilitate better education and employment outcomes with identity priming.

Allegra has experience teaching Econometrics at the graduate and undergraduate level, and experience designing surveys, managing field teams and fieldwork, liaising with partners and conducting analysis for large Randomized Controlled Trials. Allegra's work has been supported by the Fulbright Program and the National Research Foundation in South Africa.

This dissertation consists of two essays which use econometric methods to investigate topics in education, health and development economics, as well as a third essay which seeks uses econometric theory to improve treatment effect estimation for Randomized Controlled Trials. In the first chapter, I leverage a novel natural experiment in which incoming high school students are randomly assigned to be members of one of four groups, all of which share a common environment and common resources, to test whether manufactured identity can affect high-stakes student outcomes. This setting overcomes challenges to identification in applied work in identity economics: individual identities are often fixed over long periods of time or chosen endogenously. Using a dataset, I collect from the yearbooks of a South African school and student's; LinkedIn and Instagram profiles, I find robust causal evidence that social identity plays an important role in determining student outcomes, including grades on high-stakes senior year exams, sports participation, tertiary education, labor market and social outcomes. I use text analysis to investigate the traits and behaviors groups emphasize to shed light on which group prescriptions drive outcomes in certain directions.

In the second chapter, I exploit state-level variation in the adoption of Automatic Express Lane Eligibility (ELE) for Medicaid for children and CHIP in order to test whether the absence of administrative burden has an effect on self- perceived enrollment. Administrative costs associated with applications are thought to deter eligible recipients of public programs and, unsurprisingly, Automatic ELE led to an increase in program enrollment. However, advocates for administrative burden claim that it filters out recipients who would not make use of the associated service. I therefore test whether ELE has an effect on self-reported enrollment, using data from the American Community Survey (ACS). I find, in conflict with its effect on actual enrollment, ELE has a negative effect on self-reported enrollment, suggesting that, in the absence of application costs, recipients are not as aware of their own enrollment and providing evidence of the value that administrative burden can provide.

In the third chapter, based on joint work with Antoine Deeb, we leverage random assignment of enumerators to respondents to develop an estimator for enumerator amplifying effects in Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) with binary treatment. Although enumerators are widely used in RCTs to implement and track interventions, meaningful interactions with enumerators and their potential effect on outcomes are ignored when interpreting results and generalizing conclusions outside of experimental settings. Our proposed method provides researchers with a simple way to quantify and test for the presence of enumerator amplifying effects.
