Why this resume works

  • As a scrum master, you know the importance of setting concrete goals and measuring against those goals. Demonstrate goal-setting when talking about your previous projects to quickly highlight that skill set.
  • If you’re applying for a senior role, you want to  show ownership  over projects on which you’ve worked. You can do this by using action verbs like “led,” “improved,” and “organized” throughout your senior scrum master resume.

Entry-Level Scrum Master Resume

Entry-level scrum master resume example with 5 years of experience

  • For entry-level Scrum Masters, talk about your  internship experience  if you have any, even if they’re not exactly for the role to which you’re applying. If this is the case, try to make the work experience seem relevant to the position you’re applying to based on the job description.
  • Whether they’re school projects, volunteer projects where you did product development, a project you undertook to scratch your itch, or even  resume-relevant hobbies and interests , including these on your entry-level Scrum Master resume will make it clear that you’re comfortable taking the initiative and working in uncertainty.

Junior Scrum Master Resume

Agile Scrum Master Resume

These filters only screen for technical skills (not soft skills), which should be the emphasis in your “skills” section.

CSM Scrum Master Resume

Job seeker stands with hands in air, questioning how to fill out job materials

What is a scrum master? The scrum master is a professional leader who aids the team’s effectiveness and helps them reach defined goals. A good scrum master knows how to communicate with people, works well under pressure, and has excellent problem-solving skills. They also coach and share their knowledge so that the team works better.

Suppose you want to be successful in this industry;  your resume matters!  It should demonstrate excellent communication skills, adaptability, and knowledge of Agile methodologies.

Here are some pro tips for your resume:

Skills and the ATS:

When companies hire, they use the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). It’s designed to review your resume and score it accordingly. Because it identifies skills and keywords, it’s important to include relevant, job-description-focused abilities in your scrum master resume.

Formatting :

Make your resume easy to read . The ATS scans and filters anything too disjointed to digest. Also, if you want your piece to be read by a human before the ATS,  ensure your resume looks professional .

Quantifying your impact:

Include data or examples of your work. This helps you get noticed by both the ATS and the hiring manager.

Customizing your resume  to each scrum master job to which you apply:

  • Customize your resume to each position for which you apply. Include the company’s name at the top and share what makes you a great fit for this particular job.

Steps a recruiter will potentially take to weed through scrum master resumes

  • Recruiters may never see resumes lacking job-specific keywords, especially when the business uses an ATS. If you’re applying as a scrum master, use words like “Agile” and “scrum.”
  • Hiring managers might dismiss resumes that don’t address the  scrum master job description . Try googling keywords to discover any additional related terms you can include so your resume isn’t discarded.
  • A wordy resume is unappealing. Busy hiring directors will dump the burden of a heavy read.
  • Avoid presenting a resume with flashy fonts and excessive color. Employers may “file” it if it doesn’t appear professional. Take advantage of our  free resume templates  to look ultra-polished!

Getting your scrum master skills section right

The skills section is important when applying for a position in your field. It’s the spot where you can highlight your uniqueness. Avoid simply writing a list of skills. Instead, explain  how  you’ve used those abilities. Our  free resume skills guide  can make this process easier! Don’t forget to include any relevant awards or memberships.

Here are skills specific to scrum masters:

  • Communicating clearly and effectively with teams is signature scrum master
  • Scrum masters relate tactfully and can manage stressful situations and deadlines
  • Scrum masters are excellent coaches who enjoy teaching others
  • Scrum masters have expert knowledge of Agile and flexible processes
  • Expertise in applications or services using scrum methodologies (Agile, scrum) is standard
  • Proficiency using Jira and Atlassian tools (JIRA Software, Confluence, HipChat) is also requisite for scrum masters

Ensure your scrum master resume format is on point

A computer will grade your piece for keywords and  resume format . Ensure the formatting matches the recruiter’s requirements, or you won’t get past their applicant tracking system (ATS). If this process sounds challenging, our  free resume checker tool  can help!

Your scrum master resume should, therefore:

  • Be one page:
  • When it comes to your scrum master resume, bullet points are the way to go. Recruiters like to scan and digest pertinent information quickly and concisely. Bullet points enable quick reading.
  • Icons and images have no place on a professional resume. A picture of you smiling in a suit won’t get you the job.
  • Include the position title (Scrum Master) and ensure it’s bolded for easy visibility.
  • Ensure your scrum master resume is error-free . Recruiters can smell an error a mile away, so typos could nix you from the shortlist.
  • Many professionals opt to have an “objective” or “summary.” The problem with these is that they can be too generic and therefore disregarded by employers.

Scrum master resume objectives and summaries

What is the difference between a summary and an objective?

A summary tells what your resume is and does. It describes your accomplishments to showcase 10+ years working in a specific field.

Objectives add value to a resume by emphasizing the important information needed for an employer to glimpse who you are and what you do. It should give them clear direction as to what they can expect when interviewing and hiring you. Consider adding an objective by leveraging ChatGPT for resume writing if you’re entry-level or have little experience.

Example of a job-specific, customized objective:

Experienced scrum master with a keen ability to understand and build complex systems. I focus relentlessly on removing impediments from teams and delivering customer-centric products and features. Eager to lead and collaborate with a new team at AT&T.

Example of an effective summary:

CSC certified scrum master with experience coaching teams in person and remotely. I have a track record of improving employee retention and satisfaction while delivering product features that customers love on time and under budget. Eager to join forces with a Google team.

Quantify your scrum master experience

It can be challenging to quantify what you’ve done as a scrum master. However, it’s critical for a hiring manager to understand your experience and its relation to the job description.

Metrics are easy to understand. For example: “Scrum master for 3 teams totaling 12 people with an average velocity of 20 points per sprint over six months” shares concrete successes. It’s also important to include all of your past scrum master experience, even if it only involved small teams or short-term projects. Don’t forget to list volunteer work! Hands-on experience via local meetups or organizations is a great way to develop your scrum master expertise.

Ways to quantify your impact as a scrum master:

  • If you were a lead scrum master, you can provide numbers to show improvement in time-to-hire.
  • Strengthen your resume by including detailed metrics.
  • Quantify the number of scrum teams with which you’ve worked or are currently working.
  • Include statistics related to project success rate and time spent between sprints.
  • Describe projects you’ve worked on as a scrum master and the teams you’ve worked with, even if they were for a short duration.
  • Use statistics or numbers to demonstrate ways you increased employee retention.

When writing bullet points, list statistics related to project success rate and time spent between sprints, when possible. Examples of strong scrum master bullet points with percentages, numbers, and profits are listed:

  • Increased employee retention by 15% over the past year
  • Reduced project time-to-completion from 12 weeks to less than 8, with a 0% decrease in quality standards by working with developers and QA teams of 50+
  • Increased product value and revenue through improved cohesion between product managers, developers, QA teams, and the marketing division by 20%

Fine-tune your scrum master resume each time you submit a new job application

For every scrum master job to which you apply, you’ll need to  craft your resume  accordingly. Suppose you’re applying for a position requiring more than one year of experience, but your last three years were spent working as an operations manager at the local grocery store. In that case, you need to rethink how to present yourself. Customize your scrum master resume in the following ways:

The objective/summary:

  • The objective/summary section is the first thing hiring managers see on your resume. Use either to explain why you’re applying for a particular position and highlight your suitability. Perhaps you’re changing careers.
  • This is where to touch upon those details and provide employers with a quick, informative snapshot. Mention the company by name to let the hiring director know you’re not cranking out mass cookie-cutter resumes but have thoughtfully applied to their business.
  • Showcase your project management, leadership, time management, and technical experience in this section. If you’re light on experience or changing careers, highlight any related work and your best soft skills.
  • List relevant proficiencies specific to working as a scrum master, especially hard skills such as knowledge of Agile, Scrum, JIRA, and User stories.

Scrum master skills

Experience:

  • Include the names of companies you’ve worked for, any notable projects you were involved in, and your role in each (e.g., project manager).

Job description bullet points:

  • Include a bulleted list of the requirements you met. Your aim is to make it as easy as possible for recruiters and hiring managers to find your resume in their databases. Try to include some of the  employer’s desired skills on your resume .
  • Remember to look for keywords in job ads and insert them when applicable.

Scrum master resume

How to customize your scrum master resume:

  • Add the schools and degrees you’ve earned toward the top of your resume.
  • List your experience in bullet points, using metrics to quantify your achievements.
  • Include an objective if you’re entry-level or light on experience.
  • Include the length of time you’ve been a scrum master and relevant skills acquired.
  • Highlight team sizes you’ve worked with and how many sprints you’ve completed.

Senior scrum master resume

How to customize your senior scrum master resume:

  • The experience section of your senior scrum master resume should list bullet points of any relevant jobs, including internships or volunteer positions.
  • Include experience that mirrors tasks that recruiters want and would expect from a senior scrum master candidate.
  • Highlight any areas of in-depth or expert knowledge.
  • For example, if you used scrum, Agile, or other project management tools, highlight these in bullet points to show hiring managers you’re qualified for the role.
  • List the schools and degrees you’ve earned. Include your bachelor’s or any other undergraduate degrees as well as your graduate(s).
  • Include any relevant courses you’ve enrolled in to show hiring managers that your skills are cutting-edge.

Agile scrum master resume

How to customize your Agile scrum master resume:

  • List your proficiencies from your current position, as well as previous one.
  • Review the job description, identify, and list your relevant skills accordingly.
  • Include hard and soft skills.
  • Be concise in listing your skills, yet specific enough for a recruiter to quickly discover what you bring to the table.
  • Include experience specific to your field such as Agile, scrum master (or other Agile certification), XP, DevOps tools like Chef or Puppet. Give the hiring manager a clear view of who you are and what value you can add to their team.
  • Include education from universities and any additional relevant coursework. However, the greater your experience and years as an Agile scrum master, the less prominent position your education will assume on your resume.

Entry-level scrum master resume

How to customize your entry-level scrum master resume:

  • As an entry-level scrum master applicant, you may not have any work experience, so your education can take a prominent position near the top of your resume.
  • Consider incorporating an objective to let hiring managers know your goal and the value you can offer their business.
  • Adding an objective also helps fill space on an otherwise light-on-experience resume.
  • Showcase any applicable skills you’ve gained, whether in school, projects, or volunteer work, such as Agile development or other relevant experience.

Experience/Employment Descriptions

  • Include your job title, company name, and location for each position held. List the dates you were employed. However, it’s unnecessary to include exact months of employment. If you recently worked for a firm that used scrum, have this information in your employment history.
  • If you’ve been involved in scrum master work as a freelancer or in some other capacity, highlight that experience on your resume.

CSM scrum master resume

How to customize your CSM scrum master resume:

  • CSM scrum master resumes should include any education related to software development or project management. If you’ve completed a certification, list it on your resume as well.
  • Your CSM scrum master resume needs more than just technical skills; Include relevant work experience directly related to the position for which you’re applying.

Certifications

  • CSM scrum master resumes should list any project management certifications you’ve earned, such as the PMP or CAPM.
  • Include any other certifications or awards relevant to your field.
  • As a CSM, you’re certifiably high-end!
  • Your CSM scrum master resume should display the edge you now have through certification. Highlight your advanced leadership, professionalism, and knowledge of scrum values like team performance and accountability.

Scrum Master resume example

What’s the first thing recruiters look for in a Scrum Master resume?

And here’s why you can tell a great scrum master from someone who read the agile manifesto five minutes ago on a paper. The difference shows in action.

Even a slight nuance gives hiring managers an easy way to toss your resume out.

Mixing up PM and SM duties? Out. Taking credit for team efforts? Out. Too many buzzwords, e.g. “servant leadership”? Out.

Feels like a minefield, right? We asked professional scrum recruiters to help us navigate it.

Here’s what you’ll learn from this scrum master resume guide:

  • What scrum master hiring managers are looking for in your resume;
  • How to write an impressive and conversion-focused Agile Scrum resume summary);
  • How to write a crisp but elaborate description of your work and achievements;
  • How to spotlight your skills as a Scrum Master;
  • How to take from the best resume examples to land your dream job.

How to Write a Job-Winning Scrum Master Resume

Let's go over a few tips that will help you write a winning resume for your next job application.

1. Look out for nuances. You are not a project manager

There’s a chance another scrum master will be reading your resume, and any inconsistencies will work against you. There are entire books about the difference between scrum masters and project managers.

  • Bad example: 3 years of experience in Project Management as a Scrum Master
  • Good example: Implemented new Agile processes across three regions and guided cross-functional teams through them.

2. Don’t focus on tools, best practices, and buzzwords. Focus on your contribution to the scrum team’s efficiency

A new scrum master will try to hide their inexperience behind a wall of buzzwords or tools, as there is no lack of these. A perfect candidate will shift the focus on their impact.

  • Bad example: Facilitated daily standups, prepped product backlogs, and forced backlog refinement using Jira and Rally
  • Good example: Facilitated self-managed continuous improvement for three scrum development teams through targeted retrospectives in a low-trust company environment

3. Win recruiters over with a smart resume format

Use bold text to emphasize the most convincing results. Use custom sections and headings to enhance the scannability of your resume. Play around with the resume layout to keep your resume compact and guide recruiters’ attention where you want it to be.

Ensure that your resume can be printed and exported in PDF format , so recruiters can view it even during their lunch break.

Use a resume header that combines the best resume formatting practices to get more Scrum Master interviews.

4. Use the right scrum master resume length

You added everything—your years of experience, technical skills , and leadership capacity —to your resume.

All you want to do is impress the hiring manager.

But here’s the thing: who is actually impressed by a 10-page resume?

The old adage that says that the number of resume pages should be proportional to how many years of experience you have is a myth and fails any real test.

The ideal length of a resume is one page . You can have a two-page resume when you have more than a decade of experience but don't go over that amount of pages.

Anything more than that will negatively impact your application. Not only does the impact of your resume get diluted—you’re also making the hiring manager’s job way more difficult than it needs to be, which almost always leads to your resume being immediately discarded.

Take a look at our one-page resume templates if you're having a hard time fitting your career on a single page.

5. Two scrum master resume layouts to consider

  • Reverse chronological resume layout
  • Hybrid resume layout

Both are equally good, however designing a hybrid resume layout takes a bit more creativity to get right. But, when you compare it with the reverse-chronological layout, it reflects your personality better.

Here are more resume tips regarding your layout and style :

  • Clear and legible 12p resume font size .
  • Use 10’ resume margins - that’s default for a great resume design.
  • Use a one-page template resume length if you’ve got less than 10 yrs of experience. Otherwise, opt for a two-page resume.
  • Pay attention to your resume spelling – don’t lose your interview chances on a technicality.
  • Save your resume as PDF before sending it to the recruiter.

What should a good Scrum Master resume summary contain?

Scrum Masters are known for being precise, well-organized, and exceptionally skilled professionals.

Here are two resume summary examples that draw the line between hirable and rejectable candidates, effectively showing what you should and shouldn’t do.

Notice how the second example makes a much stronger impact. Here's why it's a good resume summary :

  • The applicant specified their years of experience working as a Scrum Master;
  • You know what their focus is (Industry, software, processes);
  • Their technical skills are visible from the get-go.

You don't get any of that information from the wrong example, and yet, it's still being widely met in scrum master resumes.

How to Write a Scrum Master Resume Experience Section

Even if you’re good, applying with a “managed a team of engineers” type of resume experience leads to a predictable outcome: failure.

All the hiring manager wants to see is a resume that shows a professional who, with the right skills and mindset, cared for the role as much as their last Scrum Master did.

More precisely, they want to see if:

  • You were a scrum owner or not;
  • Whether you’ve worked with geo-distributed teams;
  • Your experience working with cross-functional teams (engineering, business, design, etc.);
  • Whether you have program management experience.

That’s why you should magnify your technical skills in the bullet points . It should show the scale of your work, and the impact you made.

Check out the four resume experience examples below and try noticing the difference.

  • • Managed an agile team of four big data developers.
  • • Managed four projects using Agile Scrum methodologies.
  • • Reduced project lead cycles and improved efficiency.
  • • Led three Product teams’ transition to Agile development in 2 months.
  • • SM for five geographically distributed teams and managed planning, backlog grooming, and TDD implementation.
  • • Customized Scrum and crafted an in-house version specifically for Nike teams.
  • • Responsible for release train management: dependencies, challenges and risks.
  • • Product ownership: created comprehensive functional requirements and prioritized them for all sprint meetings.
  • • Primary point of contact; accountable for the delivery of projects.
  • • Led Scrum implementation across Avalanche.
  • • Reporting and health check of projects.
  • • Helped launch the nike.com portal. Maintained three-year-long delivery and release for Nike.
  • • Managed QA and Engineering team of 28-30 resources (managers, developers, and analysts).
  • • Conducted coaching for four different managers to help them transition into SM and take lead as Scrum Master to their Agile teams.
  • • Moved 15 APIs at Nike to Scrum and web services automation resources.

Check out our How to Cover Work Experience On Your Resume guide for more tips on building a job-winning experience section.

Now that you know the perfect ingredients for making your Scrum Master resume pop, let’s move on to the next most important part of your resume: your skills.

How to add your skills to your Scrum Master resume:

We talked to a few hiring managers about Agile on a resume, asking them what they looked for when they go through your resume. This is what they had to say:

  • A good resume design or layout creates the perfect impact.
  • A good resume summary indicates relevance and passion.
  • Resume experience reflects what an applicant actually did in his current and past roles.

After that, hiring managers look up the applicant’s skills.

Essentially, it boils down to the following question: are you the skilled Scrum Master that they’ve been looking for all this time? If you focus on the above, the answer can only be yes.

Top 25 scrum master resume skills:

  • Idea systems
  • Backlog management
  • PM tools: JIRA cloud site, nTask, Vivifyscrum
  • User stories
  • Sprint planning
  • Coaching agile practices
  • Removing impediments
  • Retrospective meetings
  • Team building
  • Measuring team velocity
  • Release planning
  • Team Management
  • Agile coaching
  • Continuous improvement
  • Waterfall migration
  • Burndown charts
  • Quality control
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Decision-making
  • Documentation
  • Requirement gathering

But keep the following in mind: you should really focus on selecting a handful of those that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Are you still not sure what skills will win recruiters over? Check out our guide on How to Create A Resume Skills Section To Impress Recruiters (+10 Examples You Need to See) .

Certifications for your Scrum Master resume:

If you have any Scrum Master certifications, you know their value already.

Certifications deserve a special place on your resume. Make sure to create a new section and add your certifications there.

6 common resume certifications for a Scrum Master:

  • Certified PMP
  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt Professional

Should you add your education to your Scrum Master resume?

For hiring managers, especially if they are HR recruiters, your educational qualifications matter a lot.

Someone from a tech background can easily digest your experiences, skills, and certifications and see if you’re up to the job or not.

HR recruiters find it helpful if they see that a candidate has been through a formal IT education.

Browse more essential tips on how to feature education on your resume, in our guide Perfecting the Education Section on Your Resume .

Other Sections to Include on Your Resume

Depending on the company, job seniority level and your location, you may want to include more sections to your Scrum Methodology resume:

  • Language skills
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Volunteer work
  • LinkedIn on Resume
  • Contact Info on Resume
  • Resume Awards
  • Publications

Cover letter for a scrum master job

In case the job description says you need to provide a cover letter, do include yours. Otherwise, you can always leave it out.

Nowadays, job application forms include questions like “why do you want to work here”, or “explain why you’re the best fit for us”, which makes you wonder are cover letters really necessary ?

Still, they help you tell your story in a way that, if written right, it’s captivating and engaging.

In any case, you should pay close attention to the following tips when a cover letter is a must:

  • Make sure you go over a cover letter checklist , not to forget what your cover letter should say ;
  • Match the cover letter design with your resume’s;
  • Address your cover letter properly;
  • Keep an eye on your cover letter length ;
  • Use a proper cover letter ending ;

If you need more inspiration, check out this example Agile/Scrum cover letter .

  • Make sure your resume summary is impactful and contains your experience, numbers and figures.
  • Show the impact of your work, and establish yourself as Scrum Leader in the experience section.
  • Add skills and certifications to your resume.
  • Don’t forget about your education section—but keep it tidy and relevant.

  • Skills & Competencies

Let's start with resume headlines.

Why Resume Headlines & Titles are Important for Scrum Masters:

Scrum master resume headline examples:, strong headlines.

Experienced Scrum Master with 4+ Years of Professional Experience

Certified Scrum Master & Product Owner with Proven Leadership Skills

What makes the good headlines good is that they are clear, concise and provide specific evidence of the jobseeker’s qualifications and experience. They give a potential employer an idea of what that person is capable of right away.

Weak Headlines

Skilled Scrum Master Seeking New Challenges

Talented and Passionate SCRUM Master

The bad headlines, on the other hand, are too vague and do not give any information as to what the jobseeker’s experience and qualifications are. They also do not mention the amount of experience the jobseeker has or his certification, which for a Scrum Master is a vital detail.

Writing an Exceptional Scrum Master Resume Summary:

Resume summaries are important for Scrum Masters to include on their resumes because they provide a brief overview of the candidate’s skill set, experience, and qualifications in relation to the job they are applying for. This allows employers to quickly identify the most relevant and desirable qualities of the applicant and get a better understanding of how they can benefit their organization.

For Scrum Masters in particular, a resume summary is an important tool to demonstrate their understanding of the principles and practices of the Agile methodology. This can help them stand out from other candidates and make a strong case for why they are the best fit for the job.

To leverage resume summaries most effectively, Scrum Masters should:

  • Customize the summary to specific role - only include the skills and achievements that are meaningful
  • Lead with concrete, measurable achievements to substantiate your value
  • Incorporate keywords and use language that is highly relevant to the Scrum Master job description, and the Scrum industry to tailor your resume for both people and applicant tracking systems
  • Keep your summary concise, typically 3 sentences as a best practice

Scrum Master Resume Summary Examples:

Strong summaries.

  • Results-oriented Scrum Master with 4 years of experience in leading Agile teams in developing and deploying software projects. Proven success in using Agile process frameworks to drive successful project completion and customer satisfaction.
  • Dedicated Scrum Master with 4 years of experience in coaching and mentoring Agile teams to deliver high-quality software projects. Skilled in using Agile process frameworks to guide teams and ensure successful product delivery.

Why these are strong:

  • These summaries demonstrate the Scrum Master's experience in leading Agile teams, and using Agile process frameworks to drive successful project completion and customer satisfaction.
  • They also demonstrate the Scrum Master's dedication to coaching and mentoring Agile teams to deliver high-quality software projects.

Weak Summaries

  • Experienced Scrum Master with 4 years of experience in leading Agile teams. Experience in using Agile process frameworks.
  • Skilled in leading Agile teams and using Agile process frameworks.

Why these are weak:

  • These summaries are too generic and lack specifics. They do not demonstrate the Scrum Master's ability to lead Agile teams and use Agile process frameworks to drive successful project completion and customer satisfaction. They also do not demonstrate the Scrum Master's dedication to coaching and mentoring Agile teams to deliver high-quality software projects.

Resume Objective Examples for Scrum Masters:

Strong objectives.

Experienced Scrum Master looking to use my extensive knowledge and certifications in Agile Methodology to help drive the success of the organization.

Eager Scrum Master looking to implement 1+ years of experience in Agile Methodology to lead, motivate and diagnose issues with the development team.

  • The great objectives both demonstrate the candidate's experience with Agile Methodology and address the needs of a Scrum Master - to help drive the success of the organization, lead and motivate the development team, and diagnose issues with the development team.

Weak Objectives

Recent graduate in need of a job - looking to gain experience in Scrum Methodology.

Experienced Scrum Master looking for a career change to help increase my pay grade.

  • The poor objectives neither demonstrate the candidate's experience with Agile Methodology nor do they address the needs of a Scrum Master. The first example simply states the candidate is looking for a job, while the second does not provide any insight into how the candidate's experience can help the organization.

A cover letter is a valuable tool for any job seeker, and this is especially true for Scrum Masters. Scrum Masters are in high demand, and a cover letter can help you stand out from other applicants. It can showcase your communication skills, highlight your relevant experience, and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the position.

While a resume provides a summary of your skills and experience, a cover letter allows you to personalize your application and connect with the hiring manager on a deeper level. It's an opportunity to tell your story, explain why you're passionate about Scrum, and show how you can add value to the organization.

Here are some of the key reasons for pairing your Scrum Master resume with a cover letter:

  • It demonstrates your communication skills: As a Scrum Master, communication is key. Your cover letter provides an opportunity to showcase your ability to write clearly and concisely, and to convey your ideas effectively.
  • It shows your enthusiasm for the position: A well-written cover letter can demonstrate your passion for the role and the organization. This can make a big difference in the hiring manager's decision-making process.
  • It highlights your relevant experience: Your cover letter allows you to explain how your skills and experience align with the requirements of the job. This can help the hiring manager understand why you're a good fit for the role.
  • It sets you apart from other applicants: A well-crafted cover letter can help you stand out from other applicants who may have similar experience and qualifications.

We understand that writing a cover letter may seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Remember that the cover letter is an extension of your resume, so you can use the same format and content as your resume. It's also a chance to address any gaps or questions that the hiring manager may have after reading your resume.

Tips for aligning your cover letter with your resume:

  • Use the same header as your resume: This will help the hiring manager identify your application as a complete package.
  • Align the content of your cover letter with the requirements of the job: Use the job description as a guide to highlight your relevant skills and experience.
  • Use keywords from the job posting: Incorporate relevant keywords from the job posting to help your application get past applicant tracking systems (ATS).
  • Keep your cover letter concise and focused: Aim for one page and avoid repeating information from your resume.
  • Highlight your Scrum-specific skills: Use your cover letter to explain how your Scrum-specific skills and experience make you a great fit for the role.
  • Proofread carefully: Errors in your cover letter can undermine your credibility, so make sure to proofread carefully before submitting your application.

What is a Scrum Master Resume and Why Do You Need it?

Not only is a customized agile resume required to dazzle your recruiters but it is also the only thing that will get you past the gatekeepers of the modern recruitment world, the ATS.

The ATS or the Applicant Tracking System is being regularly used by recruiters throughout all industries to help them filter under-qualified applicants and shortlist resumes quickly and effortlessly.

If you get your resume to rank highly on an ATS, then you are as good as shortlisted. You can work in this direction by sprinkling scrum master resume keywords that the recruiters have used to describe the job in the job posting.

However, be wary of stuffing your resume with too many keywords. Make sure that you only use those scrum master resume keywords that are relevant to you and are justified by your work experience.

Another factor to consider is using the correct scrum master resume format to compose your resume. We advise using the reverse chronological resume format as it is the most recruiter-friendly and has high compatibility with the ATS.

Also read: What should you keep in mind to create an ATS-compliant resume?

Scrum Master Resume Keywords

Every organization you apply to will have different needs and job requirements so your resume also needs to reflect that you are capable of shouldering those particular responsibilities. It won’t be possible if you use the same resume to apply to every job.

Don’t worry! You do not have to compose a new resume every time you apply for a different job. All you need to do is incorporate certified scrum master resume keywords according to the JD into your resume.

Just go through the job description of the profile you are applying for. Here you will find different criteria like education, work experience, desired skills, etc.

Once you have identified the appropriate keywords, incorporate them organically into your resume. This is to say that do not include keywords that do not apply to you just to get into the shortlist.

Including keywords makes your resume ATS-compatible and helps you pass the first stage of vetting as most companies today rely on ATS for the same.

Scrum Master Resume Sections

Now you might know everything that you want to communicate with your recruiter. But you can’t go about presenting it hither and thither.

Following are all the standard sections that must go on your resume whether you are constructing an experienced or an entry level scrum master resume:

Resume Sections

Other than these, there are a few optional sections that you can add if space allows and if you feel these sections are imperative to your application:

  • Certifications (if any)
  • Awards & Recognition (if any)
  • Additional Information (if any)

Also, entry level scrum master resumes can use these sections to present themselves as a more desirable candidate and cover for all that they might be lacking in the professional experience department.

Find out more : What extra sections can you include in your resume?

Scrum Master Resume: Header

A unique scrum master resume headline will help distinguish your resume and will make it easier for the recruiter to keep track of. Instead of writing Resume, it is better to add your full name.

Follow the below-mentioned points to frame the perfect scrum master resume header :

  • Display it on the topmost section of your resume.
  • Make it appear in the largest font size in the range of 16-20 .
  • Leave a single space between your first and last name.
  • Initialize any middle name you might have.

For example, if your name is Dakota Karen Johnson, write it as Dakota K. Johnson

We have also attached a sample scrum master resume to help you understand what an ideal scrum master resume headline looks like:

Scrum Master Resume: Personal Information

The personal information phrase shouldn’t be interpreted freely when you are composing your resume. Refrain from providing any details other than your contact information, unless specified.

All you need to provide is your contact number, email address, and the current location of your residence.

Contact Number

The recruiter will need your contact number to inform you about your resume being shortlisted. They will need to get in touch with you to schedule an interview or even have a telephonic interview.

Make sure that you are only giving out an active phone number so if a recruiter calls, you do not miss it.

Email Address

Most of the communication you will have with your recruiter or potential employer is via email. This is why you must provide a correct and professional email address in your resume so the recruiters can easily reach you.

An email address with your name will be considered professional and you will have more chances of being taken seriously.

On the other hand, if you are still using the same email address from your high school days, it’s bound to contain some childish phrase that you do not want your recruiter to see.

Current Location

The location refers to your current location of residence. You do not need to provide unnecessary details like your full address.

All you need to give out is the name of your state and city if you are looking for a job in your country of residence. However, if you are searching for jobs internationally then you should provide the name of your city and country of residence.

It is also a good idea to make yourself aware of any hiring guidelines that the organization might have.

LinkedIn/GitHub

Add links to your LinkedIn or GitHub profiles, given that you have a professional account.

You can also add links to your personal websites or portfolio, it allows you the chance to display your experience and expertise that you couldn't add to the resume.

Refer to the sample scrum master resume with Jira below for understanding on how a finished personal information section should look like:

Scrum Master Resume: Profile Title

An accurate profile title helps the recruiter understand whether or not you are qualified enough to tackle the job they are offering. It will show your level of seniority while also communicating the current designation you hold in your industry.

If you are tempted to overstate your profile title in hopes of promoting yourself or receiving better pay, we would advise against it. Liars are most likely to be caught and the ramifications are not worth dealing with.

Here is one such example of a proper profile title:

Scrum-Master-Resume-Profile-Title

Scrum Master Resume & Agile Resume: Professional Experience

It is arguably the most important section of your agile scrum resume. Being so important it needs extra attention and a lot of work.

Use the techniques mentioned below to compose your professional experience section and make it shine:

Framing Points

Here are two scrum master resume examples that will help get your point across on why framing points is the superior way of making resumes:

Spearheaded 4 Product Development teams while training them on the agile mindset, processes, and frameworks

Collaborated with 3 Product Managers to deliver 5 new features to customers

Developed and analyzed team metrics to make recommendations to improve the productivity of the team by 12%

Supported a team of 15 members to help them fully optimize the use of Jira

Organized process flows, maintenance, and Kanban boards in Jira & Confluence systems

One-liners are more comprehensible, easy to navigate, and can help a recruiter understand what you are trying to convey. Just the presence of paragraphs on a resume may deter the interest of a recruiter so avoid them at all costs.

STAR Format

The STAR format is a great way of showing the recruiters exactly what you did in an organization and how it helped the organization grow. It makes your one-liner points sound more authoritative.

STAR stands for :

  • S: The situation that demanded your contribution.
  • T: The task you undertook to handle the situation.
  • A: The action you performed to complete the task.
  • R: The result or outcome of your actions, preferably in the form of an achievement figure.

Displaying achievement figures in your resume is a great way of showing the recruiter how effective your presence can be for an organization.

Grouping and Highlighting

Here are two more certified scrum master resume examples that will show you how you can further organize your resume:

Spearheaded Product Development team of 4 while training them on the agile mindset, processes, and frameworks

Product Development Team Management

Spearheaded Product Development team of 4 while training them on the agile mindset, processes , and frameworks

Developed and analyzed team metrics to make recommendations to improve the productivity of team by 12%

Process Management

Organized process flows , maintenance , and Kanban boards in Jira & Confluence systems

Compare both the scrum master resume examples and you will find out that they contain the same information but example 2 will attract more attention because of the headings and the highlights.

Scrum Master Resume: Education

As a scrum master, your recruiters will be expecting to see proper education in computer engineering on the resume of their ideal applicant. You can use this section to inform them about all the degrees and formal education you possess.

Ideally, the following details of your scrum master qualifications should be mentioned in your resume:

  • Name of the school/university you have attended.
  • Name of the courses you have pursued.
  • The location of your school/university.
  • Graduation dates in the month & year format.

Scrum Master Resume: Certifications

Wondering how to add CSM certification in senior scrum master resume?

There are thousands of applicants lining up for a single job opening and the recruiters have their pick from the bunch. It is up to you to showcase yourself as a better candidate by adding information like certifications to your resume.

If you have relevant certifications to your job profile, they will make you stand out from the crowd. So, make sure you provide all the following necessary details:

{Name of certification} | {Certifying institution} | {Date in mm/yy}

According to CIO , the top Scrum Master Certifications are:

  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)
  • Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM)
  • Certified Scrum Professional ScrumMaster (CSP-SM)
  • Professional Scrum Master (PSM) I
  • Professional Scrum Master (PSM) II
  • Professional Scrum Master (PSM) III
  • Project Management Institute – Agile Certified Professional (PMI-ACP)
  • SAFe 4 Scrum Master
  • SAFe 4 Advanced Scrum Master

Scrum Master Resume: Key Skills

You should always consider the possibility that the recruiters might not have the time to read everything you put on your resume. Hence, making distinct sections for the most important information is a good idea.

One such section is the key skills section where you highlight your core and technical scrum master skills.

Not only can this put your skills in the limelight for the recruiters to notice but if planned strategically, this section can also get you approved by the ATS.

All you need to do is introduce the project manager scrum master resume keywords that the recruiter has used in the job description. However, only use the scrum master resume keywords that are justified by your work experience.

Other than these keywords, go through the professional experience section of your resume and identify the skills that you possess. Pick them out and list them here.

Scrum Master Resume Summary

Another great section is to provide the recruiters with a digestible peek into your resume. Here you can summarize your entire resume in a few lines so the recruiters will know if you are qualified enough to be looked into.

Here are some scrum master resume points you should heed while drafting your resume scrum master resume summary:

  • Hold off writing the resume summary until the very end as it becomes easier to round up all the information.
  • Only highlight the most significant details of your career in the summary section.
  • Try to also naturally incorporate the keywords present in the JD.
  • Wrap it under 3-5 lines as any more than that will likely lose the interest of any recruiter.

Another important factor to know is that only professionals with 3 or more years of work experience require a resume summary.

Scrum Master Resume Objective

A scrum master resume objective much like a resume summary is an overview of your resume. It should be written by professionals with less than 3 years of work experience drafting their entry level scrum master resume.

In the objective statement, you will be showing the recruiter what you can offer to their organization rather than making demands.

resume sample for scrum master

As organizations continue to embrace Agile methodologies to streamline their operations, the demand for Scrum Masters has increased. The Scrum Master plays a vital role in implementing Agile practices and ensuring teams function effectively.

In this article, we will provide an overview of the Scrum Master role, the importance of a well-crafted resume, and present 10 Scrum Master resume samples that will impress prospective employers.

Definition of Scrum Master

A Scrum Master is an Agile project manager responsible for supporting and guiding the development team in adhering to Agile practices. They facilitate communication between team members, remove obstacles, and act as a buffer between the team and external distractions.

Importance of a well-crafted resume for Scrum Masters

A well-crafted resume is crucial for anyone seeking employment, and this is particularly true for Scrum Masters. As the first point of contact with prospective employers, your resume must sell your skills, experience, and achievements. A poorly written resume might result in not getting an interview, even if you have the necessary qualifications.

Format and Structure of a Scrum Master Resume

When applying for a Scrum Master position, it’s important to create a clear and concise resume that highlights your skills and experience. Here are some tips to help you craft an effective Scrum Master resume:

Basic outline of a resume

A typical resume includes the following sections:

  • Contact information: Full name, email address, phone number, and LinkedIn profile (if available).
  • Professional summary: A brief summary of your experience and qualifications.
  • Skills: A list of your key technical and soft skills relevant to the Scrum Master role.
  • Work experience: A detailed list of your previous work experience, including job titles, company names, employment dates, and bullet points highlighting your achievements and responsibilities.
  • Education: A list of your degrees and certifications.
  • Additional sections: Optional sections that can help you stand out, such as volunteer work, awards, or publications.

Choosing the appropriate resume format for Scrum Master

There are three common resume formats to choose from: chronological, functional, and combination. For Scrum Master positions, the chronological and combination formats tend to work best.

  • Chronological: This format highlights your work history by listing your jobs in reverse-chronological order, starting with the most recent. It’s ideal if you have a solid work history with no significant gaps.
  • Combination: This format combines the chronological and functional formats, emphasizing both your work history and relevant skills. It’s helpful if you have diverse work experience or are transitioning to a new career.

Best practices for crafting a Scrum Master resume

  • Customize your resume to the job description: Tailor your resume to each specific Scrum Master job you apply for. Use the job description to identify the key skills and experiences the employer is looking for, and highlight how your background matches those requirements.
  • Use specific and quantifiable achievements: Use numbers, percentages, and other metrics to quantify your achievements and show how you added value in past roles. For example, “Implemented a new Agile methodology that resulted in a 20% increase in productivity.”
  • Highlight your soft skills: Scrum Masters need excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Use your work experience bullets to highlight these soft skills whenever possible.
  • Keep it concise: Your resume should be no longer than two pages, so be selective about what information you include. Focus on the most relevant and impressive achievements and experiences.
  • Proofread carefully: Spelling and grammar errors can make a negative impression on hiring managers. Triple-check your resume for accuracy and have a friend or colleague review it for you.

By following these tips, you can create a clear, concise, and effective Scrum Master resume that will impress potential employers.

When it comes to creating a resume for a Scrum Master role, it’s important to showcase the essential skills that make you the right fit for the job. Beyond technical expertise, the role demands a wide range of soft skills that are crucial to effective leadership and collaboration.

Essential skills to showcase in a Scrum Master Resume

While the specific requirements of a Scrum Master role may vary depending on the organization and project, there are some key skills that are universally important to showcase in your resume. These include:

  • Scrum methodology knowledge : A deep understanding of scrum frameworks and methodology is essential for the role of a Scrum Master.
  • Project management skills : With responsibility for managing the entire scrum process, it’s important to possess strong project management skills.
  • Facilitation abilities : Facilitation skills are required to guide and facilitate scrum events effectively.
  • Interpersonal communication expertise : Communication is a vital element of the Scrum Master role. Strong communication skills are necessary to communicate with team members and stakeholders effectively.
  • Conflict resolution skills : Conflict is bound to occur in any team environment, and an agile Scrum Master must have the ability to handle such conflicts proactively and find a resolution quickly.
  • Agile coaching skills : As an agile coach, a Scrum Master must have the knowledge and expertise to support a team in their Agile implementation.

Importance of soft skills for the Scrum Master role

Soft skills are equally as important as technical skills, especially for a Scrum Master role. A Scrum Master must have the ability to work with stakeholders, team members, and other departments effectively. Strong soft skills, such as empathetic listening, collaboration, flexibility, and leadership, can make all the difference in managing a successful Agile project.

How to demonstrate critical competencies in a resume

To demonstrate your critical competencies effectively in your Scrum Master resume, consider the following tips:

  • Use proper keywords to highlight your skills and expertise. Use phrases such as “Agile methodology”, “Scrum framework”, and “Product backlog” in your resume to convey your knowledge.
  • Provide concrete examples of projects you have led or assisted with, highlighting how you contributed to the team’s success.
  • Demonstrate your communication and conflict resolution skills, highlighting how they were put into practice to achieve positive results.
  • Describe how you facilitated communication and collaboration between team members, resulting in a more effective workflow.

A well-crafted Scrum Master resume should showcase your technical expertise and soft skills as well. Highlighting your relevant experience and using strong action verbs can help you stand out from the competition and land your dream job as a Scrum Master.

Use quantifiable metrics.  The candidate does include some metrics in their resume, but they could consider incorporating even more to help quantify their impact. For example, instead of just saying they led a team to deliver a project on time, they could include specific information about the project’s scope, budget, and timeline.

Tailor the resume to the job posting.  While the candidate’s overall experience is impressive, they could consider tailoring their resume to the specific job posting they are applying for. This could involve highlighting experience with certain tools or methodologies that are a key requirement for the job, or emphasizing certain accomplishments that align with the employer’s goals.

By making these adjustments, the candidate can further showcase their experience and expertise as a Scrum Master and increase their chances of impressing potential employers.

Tips for Writing a Compelling Scrum Master Resume

A Scrum Master resume is no different from any other resume – it needs to stand out from the rest. When it comes to writing a compelling Scrum Master resume, there are a few essential tips to keep in mind.

Recommendations for writing a successful Scrum Master Resume:

Highlight your agile experience: Your Scrum Master resume must demonstrate your experience working in agile environments. Showcase your proficiency in leading agile processes and how you’ve helped teams to improve their practices.

Showcase your soft skills: As a Scrum Master, it’s important to have a mix of technical and soft skills. Highlight your communication, leadership, coaching, and team-building skills that have enabled you to be effective in leading successful agile teams.

Quantify your achievements: Use data to demonstrate your successes. For instance, mention how many sprints you’ve facilitated or how much you’ve reduced the time to market for a product.

Customize your resume: Your resume should be tailored to the job that you are applying for. Make sure that you thoroughly read the job description and tweak your resume to fit the job requirements.

Suggestions for optimizing content for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS):

An ATS is used by most companies during their recruitment process, and if you don’t optimize your resume for an ATS, it might never be seen by a person. Here are some tips to optimize your content for an ATS:

Use simple formatting: Avoid using graphics or complicated fonts as an ATS may struggle to read it. Use a simple format such as bullet points and plain text.

Target keywords: Incorporate relevant keywords throughout your resume to help the ATS identify that you have the skills and experience needed for the job.

Include information in the right sections: The ATS sorts information into different sections such as work experience, education, and skills. When filling out these sections, make sure you put the information in the right categories.

Examples of action verbs and phrases to include in a Scrum Master Resume:

Including action verbs and phrases in your resume will help in emphasizing your achievements and the impact you’ve had on organization. Here are some examples of phrases and action verbs that you can use:

  • Facilitated cross-functional team meetings.
  • Trained team members in Agile methodologies.
  • Spearheaded the implementation of agile processes within the organization.
  • Reduced the time-to-market by implementing agile practices.
  • Conducted effective team retrospectives to drive continuous improvement.

A successful Scrum Master resume requires you to showcase your experiences, soft skills, and achievements effectively. Additionally, in today’s digital era, it’s imperative to optimize your resume for ATS to increase your chances of being shortlisted. Finally, including powerful action verbs and phrases will help your resume stand out from the rest.

Strong experience is often what sets one applicant apart from others.

This Scrum Master resume template focuses on this aspect by highlighting previous roles and accomplishments in a detailed summary.

The skills, education, and other sections of your resume provide more detail about you as a candidate for the Scrum Master position.

What’s the Best Scrum Master Resume Format?

There are numerous resume formats, but not all will work for your professional Scrum Master resume.

While figuring out which font to use and how to fit it all on one page, remember that the essential thing is to highlight your strengths so that hiring managers will want to call you in for an interview.

Also, you’ll want your individuality to shine through, but you should remember to stick to industry-standard resume styles to ensure that your material is organized in an eye-friendly and easy-to-read manner.

To do that, you could choose one of three resume formats: chronological , reverse-chronological or functional .

The chronological resume format lists work experience from oldest to newest.

The reverse chronological format flips the script by prioritizing your most recent and relevant work experiences and listing them first.

Recent college graduates with no work experience often use functional resumes. This type of resume focuses on the applicant’s skills instead of past jobs.

Whatever style you choose, your Scrum Master resume should cleanly, simply, and creatively display your professional and interpersonal skills.

A Scrum Master job requires focus and organization, so your resume should reflect attention to detail.

When writing a resume for a Scrum Master role, focus on those aspects of your work history that most closely align with the job description.

It is essential to include these elements in a resume, regardless of the format:

  • Summary or objective
  • Work Experience
  • Courses (optional)
  • Volunteer work (optional)
  • Additional sections (optional)

When it comes to saving a digital copy of your Scrum Master resume, PDF files are the way to go; their format won’t be disturbed as you send your resume around and they are easily accessible.

It’s ideal to let your work experience do most of the talking on your resume.

Determine how much space you want each section of your resume to take up on your page – this may vary significantly depending on the circumstances.

For example, recent graduates may find that discussing their education and skills at length is more effective than attempting to fill half a page with work experiences.

How to Write a Scrum Master Resume Summary or Resume Objective

Any practical approach, including your resume, begins with purposeful action.

You only have a few seconds to catch your reader’s attention. To ensure that you do, it’s a good idea to craft a practical Scrum Master resume summary or objective.

You can write either a resume objective or summary to introduce yourself and explain why you’re the best person for the Scrum Master role and what you want.

No matter which one you write, your resume summary or objective should act as a quick summary of your career journey. Begin with an attention-grabbing statement and end on a strong, personal note that sums up who you are professionally.

A summary highlights your most significant accomplishments and explains how they relate to the job for which you are applying.

A Scrum Master resume summary is appropriate for more experienced Scrum Masters who have worked with various businesses and projects.

They will have an advantage if their experience matches what the organization is looking for and if the summary expresses this clearly and compellingly using Scrum Master resume buzzwords .

On the other hand, a resume objective is better suited to entry-level roles of individuals with less experience.

Here, the emphasis should be on your abilities, internships, volunteer activities, etc., and enthusiasm for your chosen professional path. It should also show your desire to learn and progress once you’re a part of the organization.

It should give them a clear idea of what to expect when interviewing and hiring you. If you’re new or have limited experience, consider including an objective.

Scrum Master Resume Summary Example

A strong resume objective should include your relevant skills, abilities and experience . These elements should clearly show how you’re qualified for the job you are applying to.

When you lack experience, it’s possible to distinguish yourself as a viable candidate simply by drawing connections between what you offer and an employer’s needs.

The following resume is an example of how to highlight your qualifications and draw attention to the skills necessary for a strong summary:

Passionate Scrum Master with 5 years of experience. I was responsible for all Scrum Master tasks at Sundae Inc. including leading scrum teams, gathering requirements and delivering products.

While the first resume example fails to illustrate any passion, this second one presents a picture of someone who possesses the skills needed for a job and is ready to apply them.

How to Write an Entry-Level Scrum Master Resume Objective

A resume objective best suits entry-level roles or Scrum Master hopefuls with less experience.

The emphasis should be on your abilities, internships and volunteer activities, demonstrating enthusiasm for your chosen professional path.

Objectives provide value to a resume by stressing essential information that gives an employer a sense of who you are and what you do.

If written well, employers will clearly understand your skills and work ethic from reading.

Entry-Level Scrum Master Resume Objectives

If you want to catch the attention of hiring managers, your resume should include a career objective that makes an immediate impact on the reader.

The following resume shows how you can use your qualifications and skills to craft a meaningful objective:

Entry-level Scrum Master. I have worked on three scrum teams and worked in an agile environment

Enthusiastic entry-level Scrum Master, skilled in designing, developing and implementing innovative business process modeling and system solutions using a variety of software development methodologies.  Looking to join The Jackson Agency as an entry-level Scrum Master.

The first example is what not to do in your Scrum Master resume objective. It doesn’t clearly state the applicant’s skills and work ethic, which may be relevant for a recruiter reading it. In contrast, the second example exudes confidence: It uses action verbs and concrete descriptions.

How to Describe Your Scrum Master Experience

Quantifying your experience as a Scrum Master can be challenging, but it’s critical for employers to understand the relationship between those experiences and job descriptions.

Scrum Masters are often expected to have a certain amount of experience in the field, but there’s no set standard that employers expect candidates to meet.

Instead, recruiters are looking for candidates who can demonstrate their ability to perform their job duties effectively by providing examples of relevant work experience or past projects.

The point of the job description is to provide a clear picture of what the employer expects from the candidate, so that both parties can make informed decisions about whether or not they’re a good fit for one another.

This section of your resume is a good place to list metrics you’ve helped improve, even if the projects were small or short-term.

Also include any volunteer work that has had an impact on succeeding with larger teams in other companies. Attending local meetups and other organizations is a great way to develop your Scrum Master expertise.

In your experience section, be sure to incorporate Scrum Master resume keywords from the job description. Not only will it pique the recruiter’s interest, but some recruiters employ software that analyzes your suitability and searches for the terms and phrases listed in a description.

Here are some examples of ways to measure your impact as a Scrum Master:

  • If you were a lead Scrum Master, you could provide data showing that the time it takes to hire new employees has decreased.
  • Describe the number of scrum teams with which you have worked or are currently working.
  • Use figures to illustrate how you improved employee retention levels.
  • Include statistics that indicate how often projects succeed, and the amount of time between each sprint.
  • Summarize the projects you’ve worked on as a Scrum Master and what kinds of teams were involved.
  • A detailed metrics section can give employers a better idea of what you’ve accomplished in your career.

Scrum Master Resume Examples: Experience

Let’s examine a few examples of a Scrum Master resume experience section to get a sense of what to do and what to avoid.

When you take a look at the first example, it’s easy to notice how uninteresting all of its statements are. They don’t offer much detail about what makes this workspace special.

The second example is more thorough and insightful than its predecessor by providing a more complete picture of your work history.

Drake Media | Austin, TX

2019 – 2022

  • Organized weekly status meetings
  • Handled a variety of tasks over a two-year period.
  • Worked as a Product Manager at Drake Media
  • Developed generic action plans
  • Distributed responsibilities
  • Managed the dependencies, challenges, and risks of releasing a new product.
  • Facilitated connections between the product, business, marketing and engineering teams to plan and see through key projects.

Does Your Education Section Fit the Bill? It Might Not

The majority of Scrum Masters have professional training or work experience in marketing, communication, sales, or a similar industry.

Your Scrum Master resume, as a result, should include a mention of your education.

Just mention your degree and title, the year you began and ended it , and any other details that distinguish you from other applicants.

If you have a degree in marketing, communication, or sales, you can mention that on your resume. You can also include any relevant work experience related to these fields.

For example, if you were a marketing assistant at an advertising agency for two years before becoming a Scrum Master, include this information on your resume as well.

If you don’t have a degree, though, that doesn’t mean you should leave it off your resume. Instead of listing your alma mater and major, focus on the courses that have prepared you for the role.

It might be fine to mention in this section, for instance, that you participated in a debate club and won awards at competitions.

You should also emphasize your strong GPA and, if relevant, your recent graduation from college or university.

Use your education section to emphasize your volunteer and extracurricular activities that are pertinent to the Scrum Master position; a large part of education’s worth comes from the things we do outside of the classroom.

Scrum Master Resume Education Section Example

If you want to stand out from the crowd and get noticed by hiring managers, create a resume that stands out in other ways.

2007 – 2011

  • Joined various extracurricular activities
  • Won a debate competition
  • Led group projects in classroom
  • Took marketing related coursework
  • National University Debate Champion, 2010
  • Relevant Courses: Computer Science, Marketing Basics, Modern Media and Society, Project Management

The second example is more concise and therefore easier to read.

It also provides a quick, clear idea of what the candidate has done in school and how that may be relevant to a potential employer.

The first example contains unnecessary details that do not help paint a picture of the candidate’s skills or abilities.

The Best Scrum Master Skills for a Resume

Make sure you highlight your Scrum Master skills so that the hiring manager can see how valuable an asset you would be in their company.

If you have limited experience working as a Scrum Master, include skills relevant to the job and your previous work experiences.

Don’t crowd the space with a long list of skills.

The goal is to get the hiring manager interested in your candidacy, so keep it brief and on point.

Remember that you’ll only have about one page to show your stuff, so choose about 5-6 relevant skills and showcase them well.

You’ll advance more quickly if you have a skill set that combines both hard skills—those that are directly connected to your profession and learned through experience or education—and soft skills—like communication and problem-solving capabilities.

Here are some examples:

Soft Skills

  • Documentation
  • Servant Leadership
  • Team Management
  • Decision-making
  • Time Management
  • Communication
  • Team building
  • Collaboration

Hard Skills

  • User stories
  • Backlog management
  • JIRA cloud site
  • Vivifyscrum
  • Measuring team velocity

How to Add Other Sections for an Effective Resume

Why go through all this trouble to create a scrum manager resume that doesn’t wow the recruiter?

By adding additional sections, you will have more opportunities to showcase your experience and personality.

While brainstorming, make sure that your lists of skills and experiences are relevant to the job description of a Scrum Master.

They should be useful for both you and the company’s goals

Your research skills will be useful in your “other” section(s). Spend some time learning about the organization and its ideals before applying. By highlighting time you’ve spent volunteering, you can demonstrate your dedication to fostering community.

People that add extra sections to their Scrum Master resume, like a section showing technical talents or a section with connections to personal websites, usually stand out from competitors whose resumes are less carefully tailored.

Scrum Master Resume Sample “Other” Sections

Here is an example of how you can make your resume more interesting by adding some special details.

Additional information

  • Debate
  • Participated in local acting group

Certifications

The whole point of any “other” section is to showcase notable accomplishments that make you stand out from the crowd.

If it will boost your chances of getting a job, include it.

Depending on the company, job seniority level and your location, you may want to add sections such as:

  • Volunteer Work
  • Language skills

This resume template does a great job by showcasing your education and spotlighting your relevant internship and project experience in school to stand out from the crowd.

An entry level scrum master resume that highlights education, internship experience, volunteer and project management experience, activities, and technical skills.

Order of sections in resume by importance

Start your entry level resume off strong with your education, because it's the most recent and thus most relevant to a hiring manager. If you had a high GPA, earned honor roll or the Dean’s list, or took relevant coursework, make sure to add it. If you have a lower GPA like 2.5, you might want to leave it out. Next, share specific projects from your internships. Examples like “managing international stakeholders” and “developing Excel macros” sound impressive!

Mention of international experience in education and internship

The world is becoming increasingly globalized, which means that we are doing more and more international business. Establishing and maintaining such relationships will be incredibly important as the 21st century continues, and is already highly desirable in 2023. It shows that you work well with people from different cultures and diverse backgrounds, demonstrating flexibility and an openness to new things.

We spoke with hiring managers from top companies like Accenture, IBM, and Deloitte to understand what they look for in entry-level Scrum Master resumes. The following tips will help you create a strong resume that stands out to recruiters and lands you interviews.

Highlight your Scrum certification and training

Recruiters want to see that you have invested in your Scrum education, especially for entry-level roles. Be sure to prominently feature any Scrum certifications or training you have completed.

Here are examples of how to list your Scrum certifications:

  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Scrum Alliance, 2023
  • Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I), Scrum.org, 2022
  • Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), Project Management Institute, 2023

Avoid simply listing the certification names without context, like this:

Bullet Point Samples for Entry Level Scrum Master

   Quantify your Scrum project experience

Hiring managers want to understand the scope and impact of the Scrum projects you worked on. Use specific numbers and metrics to quantify your experience.

Strong examples of quantified Scrum experience:

  • Facilitated daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives for an Agile team of 12 developers and QA analysts
  • Managed product backlog of 50+ user stories and worked with product owner to prioritize features for 2-week sprints
  • Implemented Scrum best practices which reduced average sprint velocity by 25% and increased team productivity

Avoid vague statements that lack specific details:

  • Participated in daily Scrum meetings
  • Managed product backlog
  • Improved team productivity

Showcase your knowledge of Agile and Scrum tools

Scrum Masters rely on various tools to manage projects, track issues, and collaborate with their teams. Highlight your proficiency with popular Agile and Scrum tools.

Some tools to mention on your resume:

  • Azure DevOps

Provide specific examples of how you used these tools, such as:

  • Configured and maintained Jira for a team of 15 to create user stories, manage sprints, and track defects
  • Used Trello to visualize Kanban workflow and monitor progress of user stories across To Do, In Progress, and Done columns

Demonstrate your leadership and communication skills

Scrum Masters are facilitators and leaders who must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Highlight experiences that showcase your ability to lead and collaborate with teams.

Effective examples of leadership and communication skills:

  • Facilitated weekly retrospective meetings with cross-functional team of 10 to identify process improvements and resolve impediments
  • Collaborated with product owner to create and refine user stories based on stakeholder feedback and business requirements
  • Mentored and coached 5 junior developers on Agile best practices and Scrum ceremonies

Avoid generic soft skills without supporting examples:

  • Strong communication skills
  • Team player
  • Leadership abilities

Include relevant project or internship experience

As an entry-level Scrum Master, you may not have extensive professional experience. Include any relevant projects, internships, or volunteer work where you applied Scrum methodologies.

Examples of valuable project experience:

  • Implemented Scrum framework for a team of 6 in a senior capstone project, resulting in 20% faster project completion
  • Interned as a Scrum Master for a software development company, facilitating daily stand-ups and sprint planning for 2 Agile teams
  • Volunteered as a Scrum Master for a non-profit organization's website redesign project, managing a backlog of 40+ user stories

Don't omit non-professional experiences that demonstrate your Scrum skills and knowledge.

Tailor your resume to the job description

Customize your resume for each Scrum Master position you apply to. Mirror the language and keywords from the job description to show the hiring manager you're a strong fit.

For example, if the job description states:

"The Scrum Master will be responsible for facilitating Agile ceremonies, managing the product backlog, and removing impediments for the development team."

Include these specific responsibilities in your resume bullet points:

  • Facilitated Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives for a development team of 8
  • Managed and groomed product backlog of 100+ user stories in Jira, closely collaborating with the product owner on prioritization
  • Proactively identified and removed impediments, reducing average story cycle time by 15%

Avoid using a generic, one-size-fits-all resume that doesn't address the specific requirements of the role.

Writing Your Entry Level Scrum Master Resume: Section By Section

  summary.

A resume summary is an optional section that highlights your most relevant skills and experience at the top of your resume. While not required, it can be a useful addition if you're looking to provide additional context or detail not already covered in your resume, especially if you're a career changer or an experienced professional. Remember, your resume is already a summary of your qualifications, so keep this section concise and avoid repeating information.

When writing your summary, focus on showcasing your relevant skills and achievements that align with the job description. Avoid using generic buzzwords or soft skills, and instead, provide specific examples that demonstrate your qualifications. Keep it brief, ideally no more than a paragraph, and tailor it to the position you're applying for.

How to write a resume summary if you are applying for an Entry Level Scrum Master resume

To learn how to write an effective resume summary for your Entry Level Scrum Master resume, or figure out if you need one, please read Entry Level Scrum Master Resume Summary Examples , or Entry Level Scrum Master Resume Objective Examples .

1. Showcase your Scrum expertise

When crafting your summary for an entry-level Scrum Master position, it's essential to showcase your understanding of Scrum principles and methodologies. Highlight any relevant certifications, such as Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM), and mention any practical experience you have with Scrum, even if it's from personal projects or educational settings.

Compare the following examples:

  • Recent graduate with strong communication skills and a passion for project management.

While this summary mentions relevant skills, it lacks specificity and fails to demonstrate the candidate's Scrum knowledge. Instead, consider:

  • Certified Scrum Master (CSM) with hands-on experience implementing Scrum methodologies in academic projects. Skilled in facilitating team collaboration and driving continuous improvement.

This summary directly addresses the candidate's Scrum expertise and provides a specific example of their experience, making it more impactful and tailored to the position.

2. Tailor your summary to the job description

To make your summary stand out, tailor it to the specific entry-level Scrum Master position you're applying for. Review the job description carefully and identify the key skills and qualifications the employer is seeking. Then, incorporate those elements into your summary, demonstrating how your experience aligns with their requirements.

For example, if the job description emphasizes the importance of strong communication and problem-solving skills, you might write:

Certified Scrum Master with excellent communication and problem-solving abilities. Experienced in facilitating team discussions, resolving conflicts, and ensuring successful project delivery. Committed to continuous improvement and fostering a collaborative work environment.

By directly addressing the employer's needs, you show that you're a strong fit for the position and increase your chances of capturing their attention.

  Experience

The work experience section is the most important part of your entry level scrum master resume. It's where you'll highlight your relevant experience and accomplishments to show hiring managers you have the skills to succeed in the role.

In this section, we'll break down step-by-step how to write an effective work experience section for an entry level scrum master position, with examples of what to do and what to avoid.

1. Highlight agile and scrum experience

As an entry level scrum master, you may not have direct experience in the role. However, you should highlight any exposure to agile methodology and scrum processes from past roles or projects:

  • Participated in daily scrum meetings and sprint planning as a software developer
  • Collaborated with cross-functional teams using agile framework for marketing campaigns
  • Helped implement kanban system to visualize workflow and improve efficiency

Avoid simply listing generic responsibilities that could apply to any role:

  • Attended meetings
  • Worked with other teams
  • Organized projects

2. Quantify your impact with metrics

Numbers jump off the page and help hiring managers quickly grasp your contributions. Back up your bullet points with metrics on the results you achieved:

  • Helped reduce average sprint cycle time by 25% by identifying and removing blockers
  • Facilitated 50+ standups, sprint planning, and retrospective meetings
  • Coordinated 6 concurrent projects with 20+ total team members

If you don't have exact metrics, use numbers to provide context on the scope of your work:

Planned and executed 3 product launches per quarter by coordinating efforts across engineering, product, marketing, and sales teams

3. Showcase relevant tools and certifications

Hiring managers often look for experience with specific tools, so weave them into your work experience bullet points:

  • Utilized Jira to create, assign and track user stories, epics and bugs
  • Managed product backlog and sprint tasks in Trello
  • Created burndown charts and sprint reports in Excel to share with stakeholders

Additionally, highlight any relevant certifications you've earned:

Earned Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) designation from Scrum Alliance, validating knowledge of scrum framework and agile principles

  Education

Your education section should show you have the right knowledge for an entry level scrum master job. It also needs to prove you finished what you list. Keep this section short and to the point.

How To Write An Education Section - Entry Level Scrum Master Roles

1. Put your education section near the top

New grads and entry level scrum master candidates should put education before work experience. Your degree is your biggest selling point early in your career.

Show the basics first:

  • College name
  • Graduation year

Then add key details that relate to scrum master jobs:

  • Relevant coursework

2. Add scrum master certifications

Got a CSM or other agile certification? Include it in your education section. This shows you have specialized scrum knowledge, a big plus for entry level roles.

List the certification like this:

Avoid listing minor online courses or non-official certifications:

  • Intro to Scrum Methodology, Online Course, Udemy, 2023

3. Keep it brief if you're experienced

Mid-career and senior scrum masters can downplay education. Employers care more about your work accomplishments than an old degree. Just include the essentials:

Stanford University Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

Feel free to leave off the graduation year if it was a while ago. This avoids any unfair age bias.

Don't do this:

Stanford University, Stanford, CA Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, June 2003 Cumulative GPA: 3.7 Relevant Coursework: Data Structures, Algorithms, Software Engineering

  Skills

The skills section of your resume is a critical component that showcases your abilities to potential employers. As an entry level scrum master, it's important to highlight the right mix of technical skills, project management methodologies, and tools that demonstrate your readiness for the role.

In this section, we'll break down key steps to follow when crafting an effective skills section for your entry level scrum master resume.

1. Understand how applicant tracking systems work

Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes based on keywords relevant to the job description. To ensure your resume makes it past these automated systems:

  • Carefully review the job description and identify key skills the employer is looking for
  • Incorporate those exact skill keywords naturally into your skills section
  • Avoid using vague or outdated terms that may get flagged by the ATS

For instance, instead of simply listing 'Agile methodologies', specify the exact frameworks you're proficient in:

Agile frameworks: Scrum, Kanban, Lean Jira, Trello, Asana User story mapping

2. Categorize your skills into relevant buckets

Grouping your skills into categories makes it easier for hiring managers to quickly assess your strengths. Some key buckets to consider for an entry level scrum master:

  • Agile frameworks : Scrum, Kanban, XP
  • Project management tools : Jira, Trello, Asana, MS Project
  • Collaboration : Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom
  • Technical : SQL, Python, HTML/CSS (if relevant to the role)

Avoid creating a laundry list of unrelated or generic skills:

Microsoft Office Communication Teamwork Scrum

3. Specify your level of proficiency

Provide context on how proficient you are in each skill, especially for tools and technical skills. This gives employers a better sense of your expertise. You can use beginner, intermediate, advanced, or expert to indicate your level.

Here's an example of what to avoid:

Microsoft Excel Agile Scrum Master Certification

Instead, quantify your proficiency:

Microsoft Excel (Advanced) Agile frameworks: Scrum (Expert), Kanban (Intermediate) Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)
